Dingle Repair Cafe + Upcycling

Authorised Distributor

Meitheal Deisiúcháin + Uaschúrsála Corca Dhuibhne Do you have broken items lying around your house, crying out for some TLC? Or things which are no longer functional but have useful parts which might become something else? Or even things which you imagined would make a sculpture but don't have the time or the skills to create something beautiful with it? Then the Dingle Repair Cafe is for you... In the last number of years Repair Cafes have been popping up around the world to encourage people to fix things rather than dumping useful things in landfills. In these days of cheap consumer goods we have become a throwaway society where its easier to buy a new item rather than fix what we have. This is just not sustainable. Repair Cafes provide a supportive environment in which people are involved in fixing things for themselves and possibly learning new skills in the process. You can come along with your broken stuff and get help fixing it, borrow a tool to fix it or get advice on how to fix if it cannot be fixed on the day. There will be a number of people there who can offer help/advice on items such as household appliances, textiles, small furniture repair, electronic hardware, tool sharpening and also some creative minds who will be upcycling items and artists who will be creating works of art with unused items. So what are you waiting for? ... dust off all that old stuff and bring it to Kennedy's Bar, Goat Street on Friday the 1st of May between 10.30am and 2pm! Artwork created will be on display over the whole Féile Na Bealtaine weekend. It is hoped that the repair cafe will become a regular event so if you have a useful skill and would like to become involved or like to know more, contact Breda on (087)2438697 or Darach on (087)2153758.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday April 21st will be “Still Alice”. Based

on Lisa Genova’s 2007 bestselling novel of the same name “Still Alice” is the story of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Happily married with three grown children Howell finds her familial bonds severely tested in a heartfelt, inspiring and beautifully made film. Julianne Moore received the best actress award at the Oscars for her careerdefining performance as Alice and the subtlety of her performance ensures the film never dips into overt sentimentalism. The following week on Tuesday 28th the feature will be “A Most Violent Year”. Set in New York City in 1981 this crime drama centtres on an ambitious immigrant as he fights to protect his business and family during the most dangerous year in the city’s history. A slow burning tension elevates this dramatic thriller above the melodramatic as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the times drag the characters in and threaten to consume them. Thought provoking and gritty “A Most Violent Year” is a morality tale of an individual trying to remain clean in a dirty world. 4 West Kerry Live

Spondylolysis

Spondylolysis is a specific defect in the connection between vertebrae(bones) that make up the spinal column. This defect is as a result of small stress fractures (breaks) in the vertebrae of the spine more specifically the pars interarticularis. This is the thin piece of bone that connects the upper and lower segments of the facet joints, vertebra that form a working unit, permitting movement of the spine. Spondylolysis , initially thought to be hereditary, is now believed to be an acquired overuse injury. It most commonly occurs in young sportspeople with sports that involve episodes of hyperextension, especially if combined with rotation, sports such as rowing, gymnastics etc. In certain circumstances there can be enough weakening that the one of the bones slips out of place, a condition called spondylolisthesis. Although stress fractures of the pars interarticularis are occasionally asymptomatic, patients usually complain of: Unilateral low back ache, occasionally with associated somatic buttock pain; pain that is aggravated by movements involving lumbar extension(bending backwards). An athlete also may describe a single episode of hyperextension that precipitated the pain. On examination pain is reproduced on extension with rotation and in extension when standing only on the the leg affected side(Stork Test). There is often an excessive lordotic posture(backward curve in lower back) with associated spasm of the hamstring muscles. Palpation reveals unilateral tenderness over the site of fracture. A health care provider may suspect spondylolysis after taking a complete medical history along with physical examination. An X-ray of the lower back can show any fractured vertebra and confirm the diagnosis. A computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan might be needed to detect very small fractures Initial treatment for spondylolysis is usually conservative, and is aimed at reducing pain, permitting the fracture to heal, and returning the person to normal function. The affected person should take a break from sports and other activities until the pain subsides. In more severe cases of spondylolysis, a brace or back support might be used to help stabilize the lower back as the fracture heals. Eddie O Grady is a degree qualified physical therapist specialising in the treatment of back pain, neck pain and sports injuries. He is covered by all major health insurers and holds clinics in Tralee, Dingle and Killarney.

Slinnte Pheig Slinnte Pheig is a new collaborative mixed media artwork by West Kerry based visual artist Ken Bolger and poet Dairena Ní Chinnéide, using materials from Peig Sayers home to celebrate the life of one of Chorca Dhuibhne’s best known residents. The pieces are made from the original slate roof tiles retrieved from the Blasket home of the West Kerry story teller and author. The hand carved pieces are engraved with specially commissioned poems about Peig by Dairena, a Corca Dhuibhne native. There are three different poems, written in both Irish and English. These works are a collaboration between writer and visual artist, urban and rural art, Irish speaker and non, male and female and bringing the old to new. Slinnte Pheig will be launched in Ionad an Bhlascaoid, Dún Chaoin, Thursday 30th April 6.30 p.m. Opening by Dr. Pádraig Ó hÉalaí, former senior lecturer in the Department of Irish at the National University of Ireland, Galway and music by Rónán Ó Snodaigh (Kíla)

The Dingle Library

ence and subsequent Civil War. The family had great love of the irish language and culture and were active members of Conradh na Gaeilge. Peg subsequently married Tom Devane, of Greys' in 1945. Tom was a Dingle fisherman. Their marriage was blessed with four daughters Mary, Nuala, Joan and Elizabeth.

Dan Graham

Peg took great personal interest and pride in the appearance of the building, both internally and externally. There were three sections in the early library - adult, adult fiction and children's books. Sometimes the fire was lit and it made the room very bright, cosy and cheerful. It became a great meeting place for the townsfolk. Confidences were sometimes shared and advice offered. Old friends and relations home on holidays would drop in to say "hello". The library prospered and expanded under Peg's leadership and that of her successor. Peg sadly passed away in January 1990, having served her beloved library for 43 years (1934 - 1977): her successor was the late Mrs Kathleen Murphy (1977 - 2006) The current librarian is Bernard Mac Brádaigh.

The Dingle Carnegie Library, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year, stands at the junction of Green Street and Greys' Lane in the Townland of Farranakilla, on a site donated by Lord Ventry. Though a small edifice ( the original structure being 127m²), it is described by Grimes as being "classical in its design and construction". A single storey building, it is set back slightly from the main line of the street. It displays sand cement quoins, a grand central entrance door flanked by Doric columns, with medallions on the soffit and appropriate proportioned windows. Its architect was Mr Richard Caulifield Orpen, brother of Mr William Orpen, Irish portrait painter, of Dublin. Internally the building is comprised of two rooms, one larger than the other (these were separated by a glass and timber partition). The former was intended as the general reading room, with the latter probably designated as a reference room or a ladies reading room. The larger room housed an ornate fireplace, a glass roof-light and a small balcony accessible by an internal stairway, which may have been installed to facilitate musicians etc. for social and community gatherings.

Personal collections of national importance have over time been deposited in the library, an Seabhac's " Cnósach Duibhneach" of which 976 volumes are currently held, the Pádraig Ó Siochrú archive, and the Tom Crean collection of memorabilia. Dingle Library also currently holds 5,017 volumes from An Canónach Pádraig Ó Fiannachta's library. Today it is the repository for 24,413 books in total, however, the number of books in the collections varies upwards as they are being added to as books are published. The Tomás Ághas museum items, formerly housed in Dingle library but removed for conservation will shortly be returned to the branch where they will remain on permanent display. The library was renovated in 1985 and extended in 1996. It continues the motto of Mr Andrew Carnegie - "Let there be light" for one and all who enter its iconic doorway in search of knowledge. Under the tutelage of Peg, and later Kathleen and now Bernard, the Dingle Carnegie free library is testament today to service and devotion to duty.

The early history of the library was fraught with controversy and political unrest, amidst a people and country emerging as a new nation. The charismatic and fiery West Kerry MP (1871 - 1943) Mr Thomas Ó Donnell of Liscarney, Castlegregory, a member of The Irish Parliamentary Party, succeeded while on a visit to the USA in 1909, in obtaining a promise from the Scottish American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to grant £1,500 for the building of a free library in Dingle. When Carnegie died in 1919 this sum was increased by £600 by the UK Carnegie Trust. A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built worldwide, 66 of those in Ireland, of which seven were built in County Kerry. The procurement of a suitable town site delayed the project, with building plans being finally submitted on January 1st, 1916. A contract was awarded to John Flahive of Dingle and signed on April 17th, 1917. The building was completed by 1918 for a sum of £1,970. Alas an on-going lease dispute with Lord Ventry resulted in the building remaining empty and forlorn. A temporary reading room In the Dingle Temperance Hall was used in the Interim. Dingle library was finally opened to the public on June 12, 1934. Ms Margaret (Peg) Cleary (of Baile an Mhuileann, near Dingle), was appointed as caretaker/secretary/ librarian on a salary of £70 per annum. Dingle library has always provided a haven of study, recreation and research to the many scholars and readers who have crossed its doorstep. These facilities have traditionally been graciously provided by its enthusiastic staff, none more so than by its first librarian " Peg the library", as she was known to one and all. She was the youngest of a family of 17 children, born to Thomas and Johanna Cleary. The Clearys were a staunch republican family who participated in the War of Independ-

tonic revitalising and cleansing the system after the winter months.

Healing with Herbs

Nettle’s antihistamine properties make this herb valuable for treating hay fever and other allergies. Skin conditions will also benefit from this herb and nettle is a specific for childhood eczema and can be helpful for adult eczema as one component of a treatment plan.

Stinging Nettle: Urtica Dioica Family: Urticaceae Parts Used : Aerial parts, root, seed

Medicinally nettle seed and root can be considered separately from the leaf with the root used mostly for urinary tract conditions and the seed as a general restorative for convalescence and as an immune stimulant. Both the leaf and roots can be used topically for thinning hair and the leaf can be used either singly or with other herbs such as calendula in an ointment for skin conditions. The stinging nettle is one of the most useful plants available to us today and apart from its medicinal uses nettle can be used as a food and to make a dye, paper, cloth and green manure. Nettle fibre is similar to flax and the plant was used to make every sort of cloth and even fishing nets as the fibre of the nettle is stronger than that of flax. Paper, cloth and dyes are still made today from parts of the nettle plant. A decoction of nettle leaves gives a permanent green dye and the roots boiled give a yellow colour. The plant can be plentiful where moist nitrogen rich soil is present and given these conditions it will grow in abundance and can be found in the wild patch at the end of the garden, on waste ground and along hedgerows and field edges. Nettle like cleaver (see previous edition) is a valuable spring tonic and the young nettle tops can be used to make soup and even a pesto providing a powerhouse of minerals, such as boron, calcium, silica and iron along with the vitamins C and K. I carefully pick the plant wherever it grows in the garden and gather what is available for juicing, particularly now when the plants are young and sweet. Though tastiest in the spring, if nettles are repeatedly cut back they will send up fresh shoots, which can be harvested throughout the summer and into the autumn. Medicinally the sting from a nettle has proven beneficial effects and the topical use of herb was popular as an old arthritis remedy. This remedy required actively stinging the affected joint to relieve the pain of arthritic conditions for up to a week! Fortunately the internal use of the herb is also effective and though not as immediate as its external use as our ancestors would attest too, the internal use of the herb will give relief for chronic inflammatory conditions. Today nettle is prized particularly as a blood tonic restoring blood deficiency and iron deficient anaemia. Fatigue like symptoms will improve and energy return as natural resistance is strengthened and the whole body is supported. Nettle has a gentle stimulating effect on the lymphatic system and as discussed in my previous article the combination of the cleaver and nettle together make a wonderful spring 14 West Kerry Live

Nettles are one of the best plants we have readily available to us both as a food and a medicine, providing us with vitamins and minerals for free. They are the ultimate food medicine strengthening and supporting the whole system epitomising, I believe, the ownership we can all have over our general health. Preparation and dosage: 10g to 20g of the leaf can be taken as a tea, infused for 15 to 20 minutes in boiling water. Tincture 4 to 6 ml three times a day Juice 10mls twice a day Safety considerations: Fresh nettle causes urticaria if applied topically! Internal use may theoretically decrease the efficiency of anticoagulant drugs. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Mike O'Shea To Tackle 575Km Ice Crossing Of Greenland Dingle adventurer Mike O'Shea and Cork's Clare O'Leary are again foregoing the mild climes of Ireland for much colder weather. The duo have announced their upcoming expedition to Greenland where they plan to cross the Greenland lcecap from West to East over 25 gruelling days . Greenland is the second largest ice mass outside of Antartica, and their journey is just under 600km and gaining a maximum altitude of 2500m. This expedition is the 6th expedition in an ongoing series of ice related adventures that the pair have dubbed The Ice Project, with the team having previously crossed the North Patagonian Icecap and Lake Baikal and made two attempts to walk to the North Pole. The expedition will begin on the 30th April when O'Shea and O'Leary will fly to Kangerlussuaq in Western Greenland where they will meet the 4 other international members of the team. The other members of the team hail from the UK, USA and Norway and the team will meet up to finalise preparing their equipment and food. As the ice Cap is extremely difficult to access, the team will initially focus on accessing the Ice Cap, which is getting more difficult due to the extreme melting that is taking place each year, this can take between 3 and 7 days on foot before the team will take to Ski’s to continue with the rest of the crossing. This expedition also give the Irish pair a unique chance to work with a dog team on their adventures. The team will use dogs while on the ice cap to pull sleds which will carry some of the teams communal equipment. Greenland is notorious for its strong winds and devastating storms and temperatures will reach a low as -30c on the expedition. The team have a wealth of experience to deal with all that Greenland can throw it and hope to return to Ireland in early June. The team will stay in contact with their base back in Ireland on a daily basis throughout the expedition , with daily blogs and updates on their website theiceproject.org

Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015 - An Ghaeltacht 2-10 to Lispole 2-7 The Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015 between An Ghaeltacht and Lispole took place last Saturday the 4th of April in Páirc an Ághasaigh, Dingle. In a rematch of the 2013 Final it was An Ghaeltacht who claimed the title in 2015 by beating Lispole by three points in an entertaining game of football played in excellent conditions, An Ghaeltacht 2-10 to Lispole 2-7. Goals win games and it was An Ghaeltacht with an early goal at the start of both halves that meant that Lispole were always playing catch up in this game. An Ghaeltachts Micheál Breathnach started proceed16 West Kerry Live

ings and had the ball in the Lispole net with less than a minute gone in the first half. Pól Breathnach added another point for An Ghaeltacht shortly after before Lispole had a couple of efforts foiled by some great fielding by An Ghaeltachts Rob Ó Sé. Lispoles first score came after 8 minutes from a pointed free from Garreth Noonan but An Gaeltacht quickly responded. A point from Dara Ó Sé from a free kick, a fine left legged effort from Pádraig Ó Sé after a good run and another from Pól Breathnach who showed his usual sharpness by adding his second point made it An Ghaeltacht 1-4 to Lispole 0-1 after 15 minutes of the first half. Lispole rallied and with Mike Fitzgerald, Donnacha Ó hUiginn, Colm Ó Gealbhain and Ciarán Ó Súilleabháin getting to grips with An Ghaeltacht around the middle of the field Tomás Ó Caomhánach gave An Ghaeltachts Tomás Mac an tSaoir no chance with a bullet of a shot to score Lispoles first goal. Lispoles Adrian Ó Raóil won the resulting kick out and when he passed it to Garreth Noonan, Noonan had only one thing on his mind after a great run. Noonans shot was brilliantly saved by An Ghaeltachts Tomás Mac an tSaoir but the rebound fell to Brian Ó Raóil who expertly volleyed the ball home to An Ghaeltachts net. An Ghaeltacht were denied a goal when James Ó Diomasaigh made a great save from a fine effort by Dara Ó Sé, and the same player had a goal disallowed after a free kick was taken too quickly. Dara Ó Sé kicked a fine point from play for An Ghaeltacht shortly after this and the last score of the half came from the boot of Ciarán Ó Súilleabháin who kicked a pointed free for Lispole to level the game. Half time score in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015 An Ghaeltacht 1-5 to Lispole 2-2 With less than 30 seconds gone in the second half of the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015 An Ghaeltacht had their second goal in the back of the Lispole net after a brilliant solo effort from Dara Ó Sé gave James Ó Diomasaigh no chance and restored An Ghaeltachts lead. Lispole responded with a pointed free from Cathal Ó Súilleabháin, and could have levelled it after 5 minutes but for a few wayward shots. An Ghaeltacht Captain Seán M. Ó Conchúir kicked a fine point after he received an excellent long range pass from Dara Ó Sé. Tomás Mac an tSaoir kicked a long range free from the ground for An Ghaeltacht to get his name on the score sheet. The game was fairly even at this and Cathal Ó Súilleabháin added a point for Lispole from a free and Dara Ó Sé responded with a pointed free for An Ghaeltacht to leave the score after 15 minutes gone in the second half, An Ghaeltacht 2-8 to Lispole 2-4. Cathal Ó Súilleabháin with another pointed free for Lispole made it a three point game but An Ghaeltachts Dara Ó Sé kicked another point from a free to make it a four point game once more. Lispole’s Cathal Ó Súilleabháin added to his tally with another pointed free and Declan Ó Súilleabháin kicked his first score from a free after An Ghaeltachts Cathal Ó Lúing fouled Brian Ó Raóil before he could take a shot at goal. These two young players had a great battle over the hour. Eoin Ó Grifín for Lispole made some telling interceptions and showed some great heart at this stage but An Ghaeltachts Dara Ó Sé kicked another point from a free to make it a three point game once more. Donnacha Ó hUiginn kicked a long ball into An Ghaeltachts square in search of a goal to level the game but when Caoimhín Ó

Muircheartaigh for An Ghaeltacht caught it, Referee Jonathan Griffin blew the final whistle in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015. Full time score An Ghaeltacht 2-10 to Lispole 2-7. An Ghaeltacht Captain Seán M. Ó Conchúir was presented with the Lee Strand West Kerry League Cup for 2015 from West Kerry Board Chairman Muiris Ó Fiannachta. In his victory speech Seán Micheál praised Lispole footballers for the sporting manner in which they played the final and thanked his teammates for their commitment and hard work and paid special tribute to his Manager Pól Ó Cuinn. The Lee Strand West Kerry League Man of the Match was awarded to An Ghaeltachts Dara Ó Sé. Referee Jonathan Griffin Glenbeigh/Glencar put in a great display and used his cards wisely thus ensuring that the game was played in a very sporting manner. Technology Matters - Who Scratched My Car?

packaged as an EU directive, which will apply to all countries in the EU, with large organizations expected to include a Data protection Officer on their staff as part of EU law from 2015/2016.

Joan Maguire The Internet of things, as it is called describes a world where smart devices such as phones and increasingly televisions and cars are connected to the Internet and transmit data over the Internet. In this Internet of things every device that is connected to the Internet will have an address, called an IP Address, this is the devices address on the Internet, where information can be sent and from which information can be sent. As an example of how the Internet of things can work, A German manufacturer is working on sets of smart car sensors that can notify you when you car has been scratched, dented, punctured, or worse. The sensor kit, called the Intelligent Damage Detection System, is adhered to the backside of body. The company says that algorithm can determine exactly "where the scratch is and how intensive it is," and if it came from something like hail or a falling tree. If the IDDS is wired into the car's GPS, it can record the details of when the damage happened, and if plugged into a car's numerous cameras it might be able to snap a picture of the offender. You – and the offender and your insurance company – would then have real-time information on what, where, when, and how the damage occurred This on coming reality has raised a lot issues to do with personal information and privacy. The EU is to the forefront in protection the rights of individuals. But they will attempt to strike a balance between the economic benefit accrued by the generation of new technologies and business models and the rights of the individual. The right to be forgotten law, is one step the EU have taken towards the protection of an individuals in this new reality. This ruling allows people request the removal of information that is outdated and irrelevant, from Internet search engines. The debate that has sprung up around this demonstrates how complex these laws will need to be. Under the right to be forgotten law Google has received more than 174,000 requests since the ruling in May 2014. As a society and as individuals we are progressing more and more into the Internet of Things. Our devices such as phones and computers have become more essential for staying in touch with friends, family and events. Phone companies, financial institutions and companies who provide services on computers all hold an increasing amount of information on each one of us. We know as a nation from hard experience that we cannot rely on companies to regulate themselves. So the question should arise as for each of us and our community, what do people know about us where do they store this information and who has access to it?. We need to know who is looking after our information and who is controlling what can be done with it. The protection of information about us, at this point in time about us, stems from the Data Protection Act 1988. Data protection is about our fundamental right to privacy. It is important to be crystal clear about the fact that any information about you, belongs to you. Also any person or company who holds information about you has responsibilities regarding how they gather this information, store it and to whom they disclose it. The present day rules of Data protection are as follows: 1. An organisation or person must obtain information fairly. 2. They must keep it for one or more specified purposes only. 3. Use it only in ways compatible with the purposes for which it was initially given 4. The information about you or yours must be kept safe and secure from unauthorised access, alteration or destruction 5. The information must be kept accurate and up to date 6. The information must be adequate, relevant and not excessive 7. It must retained for no longer than is necessary for the specified purpose(s) 8. Extension Of Closing Dates For Receipt Of Applications Under The BPS And Glas - Just in case anyone missed the news last week, Minister Simon Coveney, TD, confirmed his intention to extend the closing dates for receipt of applications in respect of various Direct Payment Schemes, in particular, the Basic Payment Schemes and the GLAS Scheme. This is being done with the permission and approval from the EU agricultural commission. Considerable thanks must be given to our local politicians, in particular, his own colleagues who “had his ear” and lobbyists who beseeched the Minister to seek this extension, due to the time pressure placed on farmers and advisors by the very tight deadline. The closing date for the BPS was extended by two weeks to 29 May and GLAS by three weeks to 22 May. This will assist farmers and their advisors to prepare and submit BPS applications this year and to comply with additional requirements arising from implementation of the Greening Scheme and the introduction of the GLAS Scheme.

• Intending GLAS applicants must therefore take an active role in the preparation of at least one CMP;

Payment Of Annual Forestry Premium Announced - The annual tax-free forestry premium payments for 2015 will be issued by his Department this week, with forest owners receiving them by the end of this week. The level of payments each year illustrate the interest and take-up of the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme over the years, with farmers representing the bulk of the forest owners. Forest premiums are payable annually under the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme, which also provide for planting and establishment grants for new afforestation projects that are compliant with national and EU legislation and operational and environmental guidelines. The number of forest owners applying through the Department’s Online Services for their forestry premiums is increasing. Up to end March this year, almost 9,000 online forestry premium applications, valued at €35.5 million, have been processed and paid before the forthcoming bulk premium payment run, compared to 8,710 such on-line applications amounting to €34.9 million in 2014.

• Penalties apply individually for individual non-compliance, and collectively for collective non-compliance – see penalty schedule within the GLAS Terms & Conditions.

Glas & Commonages – The Issues: - Principles of the GLAS approach to Commonages greater than 10ha

Appeals and the Commonage Implementation Committee

The key components of the GLAS approach to Commonages greater than 10 hectares are: • Submission of a single Commonage Management Plan (CMP), by a single qualified GLAS Advisor, acting for all participating shareholders while achieving the maximum participation possible from all active shareholders; • Developing a grazing and management plan which combines individual and/or group-based actions ; • Implementing a grazing regime to which everyone contributes, with an individual and group stocking requirements expressed in Ewe Equivalents (EEs); • Flexibility and time to meet the targets set, including some sharing of the burden of grazing at Group level. • Commitment, where appropriate to additional environmental action, over and above the grazing-regime; • A significantly increased rate of aid (€120/ha in GLAS v €75/ha in AEOS). Eligible Applicants • Must be an active farmer and must have submitted an SPS claim for his or her commonage share in 2014 and continue to do so for each year of the GLAS contract. Rented land is eligible if it was declared in the applicant’s name in 2014; • With the exception of new entrants to farming, the acquisition or declaration of a share in subsequent years will not confer Tier 1 access, and it not eligible for payment under GLAS; • Must have submitted a GLAS application on their green-land by the Scheme closing date. Eligible Area - The eligible area is that defined by the Department as the GLAS Commonage area. This includes non-UAA as well as UAA (Utilisable Agricultural Area), with certain exclusions (roads, buildings, afforested areas, lakes etc). The GLAS participant must be eligible for a BPS payment on the Commonage in order to qualify for a GLAS payment. The area of UAA declared at the start of the GLAS contract cannot decrease and must be maintained for at least the duration of the GLAS contract. Payment rate -The payment rate for Commonages is €120/ha for every hectare of GLAS Commonage Area, subject to the usual per-holding ceilings of €5,000. Application Process and Multiple Commonages • All applications will now be made as part of the general GLAS application process and on an individual basis, but involve a commitment to join 20 West Kerry Live

• While they do not have to lead on any other commonage, they must join any and all CMPs established on commonages where they have shares. Advisors now have until 3rd July, 2015 to submit finalised CMPs. The Commonage Management Plan • Must meet individual stocking requirement by end of first calendar year and Group target by end of third calendar year (end 2018) • Must maintain minimum area of Utilisable Area (reference area) which was present at time of approval. • Plan is expected to include both individual and, where appropriate, group actions, and to make a genuine effort to respond to the situation on the ground, recovering grazing area where possible and protecting sensitive habitats, particularly blanket bog.

The 50% Rule • The 50% rule for both shareholders and area is reconfigured as a target – these target figures are shown on the Commonage Container database. • There is nothing to stop shareholders/GLAS Advisors starting a plan with less than 50%, but the GLAS Advisor has to confirm that he has at least contacted all shareholders identified in the Commonage Container. Late-Comers to the Commonage Plan - Shareholders who join a pre-existing plan (up to end of the third full year), subject to the closing date of the scheme, will still get five year’s payment but will have to continue their own individual grazing commitments after expiry of the main plan, in addition to continuing with any other GLAS Greenland actions they may have. The role of the Commonage Implementation Committee will be to adjudicate where the Department is unable to resolve an issue e.g. where any intractable issue in relation to preparing a Commonage Plan arises, or where there is disagreement over the appointment of an Advisor. This includes formal appeals. Commonages and GLAS+ - GLAS + will be available to Commonage farmers who have one other Priority Environmental Asset, and where the value of those assets reach €7,000. No one asset can exceed €5,000 except for Farmland Birds. This means that a farmer may get €5,000 for Commonage and a further €2,000 for fencing of High Status Water Course on his other land, for instance. The other Priority Environmental Assets are: • Farmland Habitat (Private Natura) • Farmland Birds (Breeding Waders, Chough, Corncrake, Geese/Swans, Grey Partridge, Hen Harrier, Twite) • High Status Water Area • Rare Breeds. Farm Family Event & Information Evening - North& East Kerry Development (NEKD) have arranged an information evening for farmers of all ages and walks of life, to join them with talks and discussion of topical events relating to recent developments in Agriculture. Among the topics to be discussed will be: • GLAS and the benefits both financial and environmental • Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the transition from the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) • Disadvantages Area Scheme (DAS) and it replacement Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC’s) • Young Farmer Scheme and the recent National Reserve. • Commercial Forestry Schemes • Q & A Session and any Additional Information This will be an excellent opportunity to meet with representatives of the advisory sector and mingle among yourselves to discuss what effects you, and how you can benefit from these new schemes. Ideal for anyone who is unsure about whether to join GLAS, or possibly look at forestry as an option. The Venue will be: Benner’s Hotel, Dingle Tues 21st April at 7.30 p. All welcome. No Charge. Combheinsiún Sea, bhí Coinbhensiún ag Fianna Fáil i gCiarraí le déanaí. Tá's agam go bhfuil teist na ndearmad ar an dream atá i gcumhacht fé láthair ach an socrú a bhí déanta ag Fianna Fáil iad[na hiomathóirí] go léir a chaitheamh i ngabhal a chéile an lá cheanna, ní dhéanfadh páiste é. Ba cheart go roghnódh siad duine Thuaidh agus duine Theas. Is contae mór Ciarraí agus níl aon chiall é go léir a fhágaint fé dhuine amháin máb fhéidir in aon chor é. Bhí ceathrar ar an liosta, triúr ó thuaisceart an Chontae agus duine a bhí ar an dtaobh seo don dteora. Bhíos ag caint le daoine ná raibh ábalta vóta a chaitheamh cé go rabhadar cláruithe. Seans gur iad féin fé ndear é. Tá sé ráite chomh maith gur cuireadh scraith iarrataisí ar ais agus ar ceal. N'fheadar an bhfuil fhios ag na daoine fé seo, an ag teacht nó ag imeacht atá siad. Nílim cinnte dhé ach bhí caismirt cainte sa Dáil le déanaí, ag tacú le moladh bheith mar chuid do fhórsa míleata Éarpach[ NATO an ea?]. Tá's agam go raibh páirtithe an rialtais ar a shon, má tá, dáiríre. Is deacair liom a thuiscint go mbeadh an lucht Oibre ar a shon óir bhíodar coitianta in aghaidh a leithéid mura bhfuil dearmad mór orm. Ach an raibh Fianna Fáil ar a shon, agus má bhí canathaobh? Nár mheasas go mba náisiún neodrach sinn agus é sin daingnithe arís agus arís eile. An é go bhfuil mearbhall gan leigheas orainn? Beidh na conbhinsiúin eile againn sara fada. Gráin Bhí sé do mhí-ádh orm gur sháigh duine cóip don Sunday Telegraph fém shróin le déanaí. A leithéid do nuachtán. Bhí ionsaí mar a bheadh i dtigh tábhairne déanta ar an hAlbanaigh- mar go raibh sé do mhisneach acu beith ag beartú Alba neamhspleách a bheith acu. Cinnte ba naimhde dearga mí-bhuíoch iad. Ní foláir go mba dhaoine sibhialta a dhein é sin! Ach iad siúd a dhein iarracht ar iad iad féin a chosaint ba ‘sceimhleitheoiri’ iad. Mo ghraidh do cheann tá cuid acu siúd

Nuala Moore and Uisce Fuar It is still hard to believe that I competed at a World Championships. Some of us in the Ice swimming are so focused on the outcome of the event, the safety of the event, the positive perception of the event that it is easy to forget that I actually stood, represented Ireland, and won a Silver at 1000m at 0°C. The swimming world is and was watching, not necessarily to applaud to see how the Ice would challenge 47 swimmers to swim 1000m at 0°C. On paper it’s insane but the work and the learning from the last two years had brought us here. Would the swimmers accept responsibility for the challenge? Would the safety cover at the event suffice for so much extreme immersion? Would we all come out alive and mostly if we, as an Ice swimming community could manage to present an event which could carry enough integrity as to be accepted on a world stage. There was so much riding on this event that it was difficult to just be an athlete representing our country. Training for zero degrees has its challenges mainly as Ireland does not have zero degrees. I trained for the challenge and not the distance. The days before the swim are as important, travel, tiredness, caffeine, bad food and alcohol are all negatives and absolutely impact your body, being able to focus and being able to block out all the clutter is a huge challenge. Weakness can creep in and self

doubt, feelings like - what if I have to stop? What if the pain is too much? What if I can’t breathe? You focus on the thoughts like -what if I’m phenomenal? What if this is my moment? You have to believe in greatness and personal journeys. I go quiet which is hard to believe. I go deep. I go there and visualise every length for the hour before. I swim that swim before I get in the water. We have a team member at each end of the 25m and one the world’s best ice swimmers Henri Kaarma came to me before the start and said the touch board (board inserted into the Ice) was high which meant I had to lift my legs high on the turn or I would miss the wall. That was huge info for me as my turns are weak. We mind each other. Once you get into the Ice every moment freezes. I stick my face in the ice straight away as we are given about 10 seconds. I breathe out hard to get the hot air out of my lungs so when I take my first breath I don’t get a shock. Everything physical that is going to happen will occur in the first 4/6 lengths so the next 34 lengths are only about keeping the show together. Frances Lynch from Tralee has been with me for 15 years, travelling to Lake Zurich, my Ice mile and all my training,-she knows me. I don’t want worry. At length 18 of 40 she played a request and started dancing to “La Bamba”.. I laughed as I ploughed on, all I could repeat was “La Bamba”. I swam only the water in front of me-I don’t swim fears. After 22 mins at 0 degrees, climbing the ladder is not easy, with hands, feet frozen. Your team picks you up. We walked the route

before the race, so this was sequence. Straight to the Sauna/recovery where a team work on your body wrapping us in hot towels. The towels poultice out the cold and are replaced every few minutes. Swimmers need to stay focused and fight hard here. Our swim is over when the recovery is complete. It takes about 30 minutes to regain control, there are challenging moments but the pain when the blood enters the hands and feet has to be experienced to believe. But it is what it is. You take the glory you take the journey. I had a Personal Best-very few can say that-I swam a minute faster than my previous 1000m in 2013. One of a small group in the world who have 2 x 1000m completed at 0 deg. For me it’s all personal but I am very very proud of my Silver medal and mostly my ability to do what I can do. Privileged to be who I am and very grateful to those who have helped me to be this strong.

Facing the Fats - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

even before it hits the frying pan! Rapeseed oil has come to the fore as being a heart-friendly oil and publicized by famous chefs in the media. While rapeseed oil is not quite as loathsome as sunflower seed, corn or vegetable oils as a cooking oil – the processes it undergoes to become heat resistant, clear and flavour free obliterates any of its benefit and all such oils are better used for running machinery rather than a human body!

For over forty years, dietary fat had been considered the main culprit for obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol levels. More recently, there has been a significant shift in thinking as researchers question the evidence which originally linked high fat intake to raised cholesterol and consequently, cardiovascular disease. At the start, the food industry were quick to come up with alternatives but unfortunately it is now evident that while our low/no-fat options have exploded, so have obesity rates. There is overwhelming evidence nowadays that the original data linking dietary fat to heart disease was flawed. More disturbing, is the persistence of blatant misleading information regarding dietary fat and heart disease within both the health and food industry being touted to the general public resulting in catastrophic food choices being made which ultimately only benefit those industries involved.

It is undoubtedly a complicated subject but further twisted by the villains behind the scenes. I will leave the trans fats, margarines and cholesterol-lowering spreads for another day but have hopefully left you, dear readers, with some food for thought!

Dietary fat is an essential food group required by the body for countless functions from building cell membranes, making hormones, protecting vital organs to performing key functions in the brain, eyes, reproduction organs and lungs. Crucial to the immune system, fat is the key to switch on or off inflammatory responses and is also necessary to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. It is the source, type and quality of the fats you eat that determine whether they are healthy are unhealthy for your body. When choosing fats, one rule of thumb, never changes – keep it real!

Saturated Fat Found in animal meat, dairy, eggs, coconut and palm oil. Saturated fat is mainly used as an energy source so if the intake exceeds the energy required it will be stored as body fat until needed. Saturated fat is solid at room temperature due to single bonds linking the fatty acid molecules. These single bonds make saturated fat more stable to heat, light and oxygen. Oils or fats that degenerate easily are a major source of free radical damage to all cells in the body. When cooking, coconut oil is the best choice for its resistance to damage and rancidity because of its high saturated fat content. Coconut oil also contains lauric acid which can improve cholesterol and kill bacteria and other pathogens. Grass-fed butter is a close second, but can burn easily due to naturally occurring proteins and sugars. To avoid this, best use clarified butter or ghee which removes these leaving you with pure butterfat. Raw, organic sources of saturated fats with the least amount of processing will result in superior health benefits. Monounsaturated Fats Found in olives, avocados, cashews, brazil nuts and almonds. Monounsaturated fat is also fairly resistant to oxidation and rancidity. Containing just one double bond in its fatty acid molecules it is naturally a thick liquid, often becoming cloudy at lower temperatures. This fat is considered healthy because the body has more use for it than just energy. It is the heart-friendly benefits of monounsaturated fats that are key to the Mediterranean diet proven to support cardiovascular health. In cooking the cold-pressed oils of olives and avocados are most stable and suitable for higher temperatures but can also be used for dressings and condiments. Polyunsaturated Fats Found in seeds such as flaxseed, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, peanuts, some grains and vegetables such as corn and soy. These fats are liquid at room temperature because they contain two or more double bonds in their fatty acid molecules. It is these double bonds that are chemically reactive and sensitive to heat, light and oxygen. The presence of two or more (poly) double bonds make these oils unsuitable for cooking with heat. If untreated, the extracted oils of foods rich in polyunsaturated fats will burn or “smoke” much sooner than saturated or monounsaturated fats – a sure sign of oxidation and damage. However, the food industry has increased the “smoke” point of most vegetable and seed oils through harsh processing, which is also harmful to these delicate oils, resulting in an oil that is already damaged 26 West Kerry Live

Love Drives Out Fear -Pastor Shaun Abrahams MA.Th

Sunday Service at 10:30 am - Wednesday Bible Study 7:30pm Chapel on the Hill, Market Street, Killorglin Tel: 085 1541673/085 1101113 E: info@killorglinbaptistchurch.com

1 John 4:18 ‘There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.’ We simply cannot escape the reality of fear. Perhaps you are anxious about your financial status, your children, health or your own sense of happiness. Some fear is good. For one, we know that the scriptures teach that a healthy fear of God is essential for true wisdom and knowledge. We know that a right reverence of God will protect the Christian from a multitude of evils. (Proverbs 1:7). Secondly fear is also the alarm bell that God has given us to recognise danger so we can protect ourselves in a wicked and sinful world. King David often fled for his life when danger was imminent. Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt to protect the Lord Jesus. Thirdly, fear can cause a response that renders us defenceless and feeling hopeless. Often I talk to Christians who have serious panic attacks and fears or phobias of some sort or the other. Some struggle with a fear of failure, others with inadequacy or insecurity. As a husband and father with a spouse who has gone through cancer on three separate occasions, I have learnt as a Christian to respond to fear with trust and faith in a loving God. I have also learnt that reacting with sacrificial love by outwardly focussing on caring for the needs of others is the ‘way out’ of my hopeless response to fear. The apostle John makes a profound statement when he writes ‘love drives out fear’. The love John means here is sacrificial, selfless and focused on the needs of others. This kind of love is the distinctive feature of biblical Christianity. God is love and the ultimate demonstration of His love is demonstrated in the sacrificial death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Christians are simply those who personally trust in that sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ. The love of Christ becomes both the example and the motivation of the type of love Christians are to demonstrate in fearful situations. Learning to love others ‘drives out’ the fear of whatever personal loss and danger we are anticipating. Fear that renders us permanently inoperative as Christians and stifles our ability to worship God is not a healthy fear. When fear threatens to shut us down we naturally go into a self- preservation mode. It is then that we must respond and consider the question ‘Am I trusting God’. The prophet Isaiah writes ‘Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of The Lord and rely on his God’. Resting in the love of Christ will set the Christian free from a crippling fear. Trusting in an Almighty God in the midst of a fearful situation is the ‘doorway’ to experiencing grace and strength from a Loving Father. Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Camp Juniors FC Padraic O Connell Now in their 20th year the JUNIORS have five teams playing in semi-finals over the next two weekends,… new adventures for the club and a real credit to all involved, players, coaches, committee and parents. Lots of long wet winter days and nights, miles and miles travelled around the county, goals scored, games won and lost and now we have our big days out. Difficult games ahead, no doubt, against the cream of the county, but there is great pride in the club seeing these young people from every corner of the peninsula playing and enjoying soccer so much! U12 SHIELD – Semi-Final – Sat. 18th. (KO – Camp Sportsfield – 10.30am) A fantastic ¼ final win last weekend against Mastergeeha with goals from strikers Jade Harkin (Blennerville) and Michael Casey (Annascaul) has earned the JUNIORS 12B a semi-final spot on Saturday. A difficult draw against Div.2 winners Park B this will be a big ask. Still, if the senior players like Alain Beaujouan, (Castlegregory), Colman O Meara, Cian Griffin and Donal Crean (all Camp) play to their full potential the Tralee lads might come unstuck. A big crowd expected for this double header with the U14s in action straight after. U12 CUP – Semi-Final – Mon. 20th. (KO – Celtic Park, Killarney - 6.45pm) The JUNIORS 12A have a tough encounter ahead as they travel to Killarney Celtic on Monday. Although beaten recently by Celtic in the league there is a new confidence in the team on the back of two recent wins, a 3-0 victory against Tralee Dynamoes and a 1-0 ¼ final win against Mastergeeha. Still, they will have to be on top form in defence and will be counting on strikers Maurice O Connell (Castle) and Conor O Leary (Maharees) to hit the net and secure a final spot.

CAMP JUNIORS FC U14s - CUP 1/4 Final winners v Tralee Dynamoes B Ashe (both Dingle) will have to be in top form. SUMMER SOCCER CAMP The JUNIORS are delighted once again to be hosting the FAI Summer Soccer School at their grounds this summer. With FAI trained coaches and for boys and girls ages 6~14yrs the camp will run on August 17th – 21st. As an added feature we will also be running a Goalkeeper Camp on the same dates. U14 CUP – Semi-Final – Sat.18th. (KO – Camp Sportsfield - 11.45pm) A fantastic 7-1 win in the quarter finals last weekend anda Division 1 title already secured this has been the top team from the club this season. County U14 player Christopher Kane (Dingle) has been in dynamic form with the Annascaul pair of Killian Falvey and Colm Moriarty leading in the centre of the field. But it is the all round balanced nature of the squad which has given it it’s strength. Up against Premiership side Tralee Dynamoes this promises to be a fantastic game on Saturday, not to be missed if you are in the locality,…kickoff at 11.45am. U16 CUP – Semi-Final – Sat.18th. (KO – Tralee Dynamoes - 11.45pm) But for a slip up in Fenit CAMP U16s would already be crowned Div.1 champions but after a hard earned victory down in Kenmare they will now have a head to head match against Ballyhar Dynamoes to decide the title. No date fixed for that yet. However, another big test on Saturday as they travel to Tralee to take on Premier Division leaders. and cup favourites, Tralee Dynamoes. With their full squad available for selection the JUNIORS have to think they have a chance. How sweet would that be. Striker Jimmy O Grady (Cloghane) and midfielders Ruadhan McCarthy and Mark

Dingle Bay Rovers Juniors 12/04/'15-U13 League game away to St.Bernard's, Abbeydorney. Our U13 team had a very early start on Sunday morning when our game with St.Bernard's kicked off at 10am in the KDL in Tralee. A lot of rain in the early morning had left parts of the pitch with a lot of surface water. Only for the fact that this was a very important game for us it probably could have been called off. We are now glad it wasn't as we ran out 5-1 winners which leaves us joint top with Ballyheigue with one game to go. Our lads really put the pressure on in the first half and were well in control by half time leading 2-0. The second half was much the same with Dingle Bay Rovers doing all the pressing and eventually it paid off scoring our third goal after five minutes of the second half. St.Bernard's did get a penalty in the second half to make it 3-1 but our lads didn't panic and again pushed on getting two more goals leaving the full time score 5-1. Scorers on the day were a goal and a penalty by Dylan Geaney, a goal by Aodhán ó Dubháin and two by Dara ó Beaglaoich. The team was as follows: Eoghan de hÓra, Seamus ó Loingsigh, Seán Leahy, Tadhg ó Murchú, Tomás ó Sé, Patrick Kearney, Dara ó Beaglaoich, Naoise MacGearailt, Dylan Geaney and Cathal ó Beaglaoich. Subs were: Ben O'Brien, Patrick Saunders, Fergal Mac Eoin, Colm ó hEartáin, Josh ó Cinnéide, JD Foley, Dean McAulliffe. Best wishes to our goalie Cathal ó Muircheartaigh who is on the injured list.

We also take this opportunity to invite those to come along who are interested in coming on board with us next season as we hope to get a few more underage teams up and running including a girls team. We want to build this club and need everyones help!

A blitz will be coming up for the u12's in the next few weeks. Training continues for both u12 and 13s every Thursday at 6-7:30 and on Saturday mornings at 10:30-12.

Kerry County Clean Up

As well as making a huge difference to the beauty and scenery of Kerry, its also a great way to get local communities and groups together for a good cause. It’s easy to get involved by logging onto www.countycleanup.com where you can register your group and order a free “Clean Up Day Pack” which includes reflective vests, refuse sacks, event posters and information on how to organise your group. You can also follow progress or get information on the “Kerry County Clean Up” Facebook page.

Saturday April 18th

KCC are also placing digital signs all over the county and on approaching roads advising the date of the clean-up and warning people to slow down for the people picking on the roads. So sign up on www. countycleanup.com, it doesn’t matter if its one person or a group of people, if its for ½ an hour or 5 hours ,every paper picked up makes a difference .

The 4th annual “Kerry County Clean Up” day which is facilitated by KWD Recycling with the support of the Kerry County Council, Kerry County Board, An Taisce and the Department of Environment will take place on Saturday 18th April. This very worthy one day event has grown from strength to strength in the last 3 years and organisers are hoping that this year will be as successful as the last number of years. The aim is to pick up the litter from all our main roads around Kerry, in an attempt to sustain tourism by making a good impression to all who visit the county, as well as for everyone living locally. Last year more than 2,500 volunteers collected over 7,400 bags off Kerry roads. The benefits of this were noticeable immediately. The event comes hot on the heels of the recent Dingle Peninsula “Spring Clean” which took place on Good Friday and showed what a difference a dedicated group can make.

Táimid ag súil le cúrsaí iomadúla a bheith á reachtáil ag an gCoiste Gairmoideachais sa Díseart go luath agus ceangal againn le DIT Thrá Lí. Is trua liom go bhfuil SHU chomh neamhGhaelach sin agus nach iad na cúrsaí a leagadh síos dóibh fadó atá á múineadh acu anseo ach na cúrsaí sa chuid is mó a bhíonn ar siúl acu sa bhaile agus iad á múineadh ag a léachtóirí féin. Táthar ag súil leis go mbeidh Féile na Bealtaine á oscailt sa Ghairdín Chrann Clainne meán lae 30 Aibreán. News from the Díseart

There are still some eighty copies of Danny Sheehy’s magnum opus yet unsold. It is probably available at An Díseart, An Caifé Liteartha and The Dingle Bookshop. Jesus in Dingle is available now in hard back and soft back. The epic Fianna Éireann based on the Fenian lays and stories with its 30 wonderful cartoons by Dónal Ó Bric is being grabbed up. Peadar Ó Riada is setting this to music and is hoping for an open air launch perhaps in Phoenix Park. Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill is reading her poetry in the Díseart Chapel. Bríd Ní Mhóráin was to be bean a’ tí on the occasion to Nuala and the school of poets of the Díseart workshop who are invited with their books. Father Pádraig was to be a reading poet but he has now to be fear a’ tí. We hope he does not deafen us with his own effusions. Have you seen our gardens recently? The Family Tree Garden is just about to burst into leaf. Let us pray that we can enjoy the opening of the Féile up near the band stand and dancing circle on 30th of April. In addition to the parish choir both Gabor’s classical choir and Linda Madeira’s gospel choir brought the thrice fifty years Jubilee of St. Mary’s Dingle Chuch to a fitting joyful conclusion on Easter Sunday night 5th April 1864. Moladh le Dia.

Imeacht de chuid Fhéile na Bealtaine 2015 *** Cuimhní Fhéile na Cásca Tá smaointe álainn agam i dtaobh na Féile breá seo a bhíonn ar an Máimín i mBaile ‘n Fheirtéaraigh, gach Domhnach Cásca. Nuair a iarradh orm dathú aghaidheanna a dhéanamh ar na leanaí i 1992 bhí sceitimíní orm. Bhíos díreach tar éis cúrsa smidiú don dteilifís a chríochnú ins an College of a 1000 Faces i nDomhnach Broc i mBAC 4. agus dheineamar dathú aghaidheanna mar chuid don gcúrsa. Thiomáin mo dheirfiúr Fiona siar mé an chéad Domhnach san atá os cionn fiche bliain ó shoin anois [bhí sí fós ar scoil] agus bhíos ag obair liom ag déanamh mac tírigh, banríona, gadhair agus cait do leanaí beaga an lá go léir. Bhí mo láimh dheas ar silleadh liom! Ach ní cúis ghearáin dom é…bhí scuaine fada breá do leanaí gealgháireacha agam agus fuaireas díolta go maith as! Leanas orm don dathú ar feadh na mblianta agus nuair a tháinig sé sin chun deiridh, cúpla bliain ó shoin, lean mé féin agus Fiona don dturas siar gach Domhnach Cásca. Tá sé cosúil le hoilithreacht anois. Is breá liom an t-atmaisféar atá le braistint san áit, agus is breá liom an scil a úsáideann Sandra Landers na pictiúirí agus píosaí ealaíona a chrochadh. Buailim leis na daoine ceanann céanna gach bliain – Gearóid, Pádraig, Jill, Bernie, Máire, Sandra agus an fhoireann. Níl aon athrú ró-mhór tagtha ar na téamaí dar liom ach tá caighdeán na péintéara árdaithe go mór. Níl praghasanna áiféiseacha ar na píosaí ealaíona ach an oiread. Ligim mo scíth. Féachaim ar na píosaí ealaíona. Ní bhíonn aon bhrú ama orm. Níl éinne am bhrú amach an doras. Is breá lem chroí ealaíontóirí áitiúla a fheiscint ag déanamh go maith agus ag teacht chun cinn. Agus is breá lem chroí ealaíon na leanaí a fheiscint chomh maith agus cé chomh cruthaitheach is atáid. 34 West Kerry Live

************** Tagann uaigneas orainn i gcónaí nuair a thosnaítear ar thaispeántas Fhéile na Cásca a thógaint anuas. Bhí ana-fhéile ann arís i mbliana. Bhí slua breá ann ar feadh na seachtaine. Deineadh iontais don gcaighdeán ealaíne a bhí ar taispeáint chomh maith le héagsúlacht na hoibre. Bhí saothair na ndaltaí scoile éirithe go dtí daoine. Tógadh ana-cheann don ndifríocht sa chur chuige ó scoil go scoil. B’é an rud ba mhó a bhí soiléir ná gur bhain na daltaí ana-thaitneamh as an ullmhúchán d’Fhéile na Cásca. Bhí roinnt grinn ins na taispeántaisí. Bhfuil gá le Féile na Cásca? Deirtear linn go bhfaigheann ealaíontóirí árdán ná beadh acu murach í. Bíonn daoine nua ag teacht chun cinn i gcónaí agus gá acu lena leithéid d’fhóram. Táthar faoi chomaoin ag an spreagadh a thugann na healaíontóirí buansheasmhacha dúinn agus go mbíonn a gcuid saothair ar taispeáint gach aon bhliain. Táthar fíorbhuíoch do gach éinne a tháinig go dtí an Máimín – chun bheith ag féachaint agus a cheannaigh. Nár laga Dia sibh! Sara bhfágfár slán ag Féile na Cásca 2015 – ár mbuíochas arís le múinteoirí agus daltaí bunscoile an cheantair & leis an gcúigear fhísealaíontóirí a dhein camchuairteanna chuig na scoileanna – Lone Uí Raghallaigh, Dómhnal Ó Bric, Susan Ní Chearna, Andrew Duggan agus Áine Uí Dhúbhshláine – a d’oscail an fhéile chomh maith. Is le deontas ón Roinn Ealaíon Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta a riaradh an scéim i mbliana. Le cabhair choiste an Chomharchumainn a eagraítear an ócáid agus ár mbuíochas leis le Sandra Landers a chuireann comhairle orainn. Chuir Club Ceoil an Bhuailtín, faoi stiúir Bhríd Donnelly, go mór leis an ócáid oscailte.

ENQUIRIES: info@ontargetwebdesign.net

This is a big ask due to it being a very competitive market dominated by large directory style websites and there are no shortcuts. However if you are in for the long game and are willing to regularly update your site with new original content and use some of these golden rules there is no reason why you cant drag your site up the search engine rankings.

WEB: www.ontargetwebdesign.net

People often say "I want to get first page on Google."

Update your site regularly. Why? Search Engines crawl sites that are updated regularly more frequently and therefore you will get better results. Use Keyword rich titles for new articles that you post on your site. Why? The title tag is one of the first areas a search engine will use to rank content. It is also a good idea to ensure your page titles are using H1 (Heading 1 Format) for page titles. Use a Sub heading written in Heading 2 (H2) format. Why? Again this will help a search engine rank your content effectively. Write interesting and relatively keyword rich content - but don't sacrifice readability and overuse keywords. Why? Search engines are not stupid, nor is your audience. Pages that go overboard on keywords or repeat them over an over tend to get marked down. Ensure your writing is spell checked and grammatically correct. Why? Again the sophistication of Search Engine Robots that do the task of ranking will consider your grammar and spelling and penalise or promote accordingly. Also if you are targeting Ireland or UK make sure you don't Americanize your English - so for example notice I spelled penalise with an 's' not a 'z'! Link keywords in your article to other relevant pages in your site - Why? Search Engines love links especially if the link is related to relevant content. This is equivalent of giving those keywords a boost. E.g Linking the work "Castlegregory accommodation" is better than linking the word "click here". HOME OF Use Meta Descriptions and keep them under 70 words or 350 characters. Why? Like the title tag FRESH.IRISH.LAGER the meta description is very important and helps the Search Engine rank your page, also your meta description should contain text from your article. Take a tour of the Brewery, meet Use Alt Image tags (Alternative Text) on your images. the brewers and see how it began Why? A search engine doesn't actually see you life as The Dingle Creamery. image only the code for the image. The Alt tag therefore has a very important purpose of describing an Enjoy a pint of Crean’s image. It is also very important for visually impaired with every visit! users of your site who may be using a screen reader. [over 18’s only] Get inbound links. In other words ask other businesses / friends etc to link to your site from their website. Spa Road, Dingle, Co. Kerry Why? This will increase your page rank and shows Call 066 9150743 search Engines that your site is very popular. This www.dinglebrewingcompany.com is why Wikipedia gets such good ranking as many people are linking to it.

There are other things you can do on a site wide basis such as having a site map and ensuring your robots.txt file is configured correctly, ensuring you website is up to date and free of malware, that you site has good page load speed. These are more technical aspects and are related to how the website was built and designed.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling of about -25 Celsius this hot gasILCU comes back into thethe unit, Brianpoint Ormond Quizmaster andsoMartin Sisk President with Winwhere the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then ning National Champions in the Under 11s category Scoil Mhuire, transKilferred to create thisEoin unit is dependant on electricity lorglin. Gluten Free Quiche, Butternut Squash, Mushroom and Spinach Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School This recipe will suit everyone whether you cannot include gluten in your diet or even if you just want to reduce the your gluten intake. Ingredients and products marketed and targeted especially for those on a gluten-free diet often can be expensive, tasteless and can restrict your perception of gluten free cooking. My advice for anyone who finds that they have been diagnosed with an intolerance to gluten or who have coeliac disease; is to continue to cook. Instead of feeling compromised of what to cook, continue to explore dishes like salads, meat, fish and vegetables. One simple way I always approach cooking is, I never put it in to a category such as vegetarian or gluten-free. I always start with something that catches my eye whether it is a vegetable, fish, or a piece of meat, I then ask myself what would go with it, what flavours am I looking for and how will I cook it. Try this the next time your wondering what to have for dinner. If you feel you want to learn more ideas and recipes for glutenfree cooking, this Saturday 19th at 10am Dingle Cookery School we have a hands on Gluten Free cooking class. For bookings please contact info@dinglecookeryschool.com or phone 0868723521 Recipe 1 quantity of Gluten-free short-crust pastry (recipe follows) 1 Butternut squash peeled and diced Handful of mushrooms sliced 100g Spinach Selection of picked and chopped thyme leaves, sage and tarragon 4 Eggs 1 egg yolk for egg wash 250ml Cream

Cumann Rothaíochta Corca Dhuibhne The Dingle Peninsula Cycling Challenge

Salt and Pepper 20g butter Rapeseed Oil Short-crust Pastry Ingredients 100g Rice Flour, 100g Potato Flour, 100g corn flour. 180g butter, chilled, finely chopped 1 egg, Pinch Salt (Optional Add 50g Caster/ Icing Sugar for Sweet Pastry for use for sweet tarts etc.) Method for Pastry Sieve the flours together and add the butter and a pinch of salt in a mixer until mixture resembles breadcrumbs or sandy texture. Whisk the egg and 1 tbs chilled water in a bowl and combine to the flour mixture. Allow the mix to come together. Turn pastry out on to a work surface and knead gently to bring together. Form into a disc for a round tart or into a log shape for a rectangular tart. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least 2 hours. Method for Quiche Roll out the pastry and line the tart tin. Place some parchment paper on the pastry and fill with baking beans. Bake this for about 1015 minutes or until it has a golden colour. Remove the paper and return the pastry to the oven for another 5 minutes. Brush with some egg yolk and return to the oven. This process helps to seal the base so the mix will not leak. Once done remove and place on a wire rack. Meanwhile prepare the filling by putting a pan on medium heat, add some oil once the pan is hot, and add the squash and thyme leaves. Allow this to cook for about 5 minutes getting the squash slightly brown all over. Remove from the pan and add the butter once it is back on the heat, as soon as it melts add the sliced mushrooms and sauté them well in the pan add the spinach and season well. Mix this all together in a bowl, add the herbs and season well. Meanwhile in another bowl, mix the eggs and cream with a hand blender. Put the squash mix into the centre of the pastry. Add the cream and egg mixture. Place in a preheated oven at 150ºc. and cook for about 40 minutes or until the mix sets in the centre. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before removing form the tin. This is best made the day before to allow the filling to set. When ready to serve simply heat it in the oven until it is warm in the centre. Enjoy!

Dingle Tidy Towns News Richard Williams The Tuesday Work Evenings have recommenced after the Winter break, meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. Hopefully we will have a better response as our town needs all hands on deck to keep up with the great effort in most other tourist resorts around the country. We had a marvellous response to the Good Friday Clean-up effort with approximately 50 people of all ages collecting over 100 bags of litter from the approach roads in the area. The KWD County Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday next April 18th and we request volunteers to meet at the Bottle Bank at 10a.m. for a further effort of up to 2 hours duration. We also appeal to all Business Proprietors and local residents to continue with their regular efforts outside and adjacent to their own premises. Residents Associations are starting to get moving in some areas and we appeal to others to get going as the growth season has really taken off in the past few days. Comhgairdeas do Peileadoiri Pobal Scoil Corca Dhuibhne as an bua iontach i bPairc an Crocaigh and we invite the team members to be our team leaders in this years Tidy Towns effort!!!.

Dingle sailing club started it's 2015 sailing year hand in hand with PCD's capture the flag week. We ran two "taste of sailing" mornings. On the first morning we were given a dry day with a strong steady wind but it was cold, cold as fungie's freezer. The second morning gave a much warmer welcome to the second group. They received a beautiful bright day with just enough of a breeze. Out on the water it was clear we had some fine sailors and they were a great help in introducing the growing sport of sailing to their school mates.

Tá tús maith cuirtehe le biaste na seoltóireachta sa Daingean. D'eagraigh club seoltóireachta an Daingean agus P.C.D dhá mhaidin seoltóireacht do dhaltaí na scoile le déanaí. Bhí an céad maidin geal tirim ach bhí fiacal an tseaca sa ghaoth anoir agus bhímar ag creatha leis an bhfuacht. Bhí an t-arna mhaidin níos boige agus leoithne deas ag séada aneas. Amuighar an bhfarraige ba léir go raibh cumas ag an drean óg. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a gabhál le gach duine a ghlac pháirt agus go h-áirithe le Mary Jo as an ócáid a eagrú agus a cuid misneach.

I would like to thank the students who took part. We hope to see you all out on the water again soon. And a big thanks to Mary Jo for organising the event and for being a great sport.

Voting In The Referendums Question I want to vote in the referendums in May but I may be abroad at that time. Will I be able to vote? Answer

In order to vote in the referendums on 22 May 2015 you must be an Irish citizen and registered to vote. Every local authority is responsible for compiling and publishing a list of voters in its area. This is called the Register of Electors or the electoral register.

21/08/2014

16:57

Page 1

You are normally required to vote in person at an official voting centre but you may be eligible for a postal vote. Local authorities prepare a postal voters list as part of the Register of Electors. You can only apply for registration as a postal voter if you are not able to vote at a polling station because of your occupation, illness or disability, being in prison, or if you are studying full-time in Ireland but

away from the address where you are registered to vote. You can apply to be added to the supplement to the postal voters list up to 25 April 2015. The application form for inclusion in the supplement to the postal voters list is available from your local authority. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre

If you are an Irish citizen living abroad you cannot be entered on the Register of Electors. This means that you cannot vote in the referendums. The only exception to this is in the case of Irish officials on duty abroad (and their spouses) who may register on the postal voters list. The Register of Electors is published every year on 1 February. You can check if you are on the register at checktheregister.ie or at your local authority, Garda station, post office or public library. If you are not listed on the register, you can apply to be added to the supplement to the Register up to the closing date of 5 May 2015. You apply to be added to the supplement using a form called RFA2 which is available online at checktheregister.ie or from your local authority, post office or public library.

Cré na Cille, The Dirty Dust le

Máirtín Ó Cadhain aistrithe go Béarla ag

Alan Titley foilsithe ag Yale University Press

‘Cré na Cille is a work of daring imagination, filled with sly comedy. Using the voices of the dead, it dramatises the battle between life and death, time and infinity, the individual and the community. It is filled with gossip and banter, all the more lively because the voices live underground. It is the greatest novel to be written in the Irish language, and is among the best books to come out of Ireland in the twentieth century.’ Colm Tóibín - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis • Internal Dry Lining Insulation(Existing and New Build) • Air Tightness (New Build) • Building Energy Rating (BER) (Existing and New)
