St. Patrick’s Day In Dingle Dingle’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations kick-start at the crack of dawn at 6am when Dingle’s Fife and Drum Band take to the streets in keeping with a long tradition which is usually supported by hundreds of enthusiastic followers. The band march from the Old Hospital, around the town, waking up young and old but also bringing a magical start to the day. The band stop at St. Mary’s Church at 6.30am approx where Mass is offered by the local parish priest for the band who provide various tunes during the ceremony. The morning session finishes around 7:30am at Ashmount Terrace with Amhrán na bhFiann. The Main St. Patrick's Day parade is scheduled to start at 1pm from Ashmount Terrace and follow the traditional route through the streets of the town. It is hoped that with such a huge local connection stretching back over many centuries both at sea and on shore that there will be more new floats this year. Parades over the past 4/5 years have been well supported but more involvement from individuals, clubs and business outlets is urgently needed to continue to grow our Parade for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. Many builders, farmers and business outlets have vehicles/trailers available which could easily be decorated and turned into suitable displays for the big day. Lets make St Patricks Day in Dingle a really special day this year. Bigi linn. To cover the expenses associated with the Parade (Insurance etc) Danno has very kindly offered to host a Barbeque on Saturday March 7th next and we would appreciate support for same. Dingle Tidy Towns: Dog Litter Appeal We the members of the Tidy Town Group have taken on the job of ridding the town of dog litter. Our streets have become at times so bad that a person needs to look constantly downwards to avoid the mess on our footpaths. After a month of trials and a good deal of success in a few areas we ask each dweller to spray a mixture of bleach, vinegar and pepper, morning and evening in front of their house or business to discourage dogs from using our town as a toilet. We ask this to continue for about four months to get rid of this filthy scourge. We the members of Tidy Towns cannot do this on our own. We will succeed if we all pull together. We thank the majority of dog owners who clean up after their dogs. We appeal to those who don’t to start now.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday March 10th is “Patrick’s Day”. The film follows the story of Patrick, a 26-year old schizophrenic youth, who goes missing in the middle of in St Patrick’s Day festivities in Dublin to the alarm of his obsessive mother. As it happens, Patrick is being chatted up by the world-weary and cynical air hostesss, Karen with whom he falls in love. Patrick’s Day is a provocative love story about the right to intimacy for everyone and suggests that when it comes to love, we’re all a little crazy. The following week on Tuesday March 17th the feature will be “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. This sequel sees managers of the hotel (Dev Patel and Maggie Smith) expand their business and offers us a chance to renew acquaintance with the eclectic set of characters from the first film . What ensues is an irresistible swirl of heart-warming life lessons, funny valentines and intoxicating local Indian colour in what proves to be a more than worthy companion piece to the 2011 crowd-pleaser. 4 West Kerry Live

The Marine and Coastal Protection Areas of Ireland Initiative. Peter Green We are constantly bombarded by alarming statistics of species in terminal decline and on the brink of extinction. But there is some good news out there thankfully ... We are the guardians of our environment. The most important legacy we leave is the state of that environment for future generations. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires EU member states to take the necessary measures to achieve and maintain Good Environmental Status in the marine environment by 2020. Meaning that our oceans and seas should be clean, healthy and productive and the use of the marine environment is at a level that is sustainable. Within the EEZ ( Exclusive Economic Zone), 200 nautical miles West and North and obviously less to the East and South, Ireland enjoys sovereign rights over the exploitation, conservation and management of living and non-living natural resources, and exercises jurisdiction over marine scientific research and for the protection of the marine environment in the EEZ. Coastal waters, including the seabed and subsoil, also fall within the scope of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Huge opportunity is matched by huge responsibility. The MSFD is part of a cyclical process repeated every six years (it started in 2012). As more information is gathered and with better scientific understanding, EU member states update their assessments and move towards achieving and maintaining Good Environmental Status (GES). Good Environmental Status requires that biological diversity is maintained, and that human activity does not adversely alter the ecosystem. Also that fish and shellfish stocks are within safe biological limits. Water pollution, marine litter, effects on sea floor integrity and underwater noise are all important factors to be considered and minimised. Responsibility for the implementation of the MSFD falls on the Department of the Environment in collaboration with other state agencies and the Marine Institute. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has responsibility for SAC’s, SPA’s and National Parks in Ireland. Currently there is minimal protection for the marine and coastal environment. There is a need to identify and establish a network of Marine Protection Areas (MPA’s). Ireland has made a commitment under the OSPAR convention to protect the marine environment and the biodiversity of the N.E. Atlantic. Ireland’s marine environment contains some of Europe’s most diverse ecosystems, from coastal and near-shore shallow waters to the deep water expanses of the N.E. Atlantic. Ireland’s marine waters are blessed with the richest diversity of life, from fish and shellfish, to seabirds, cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises), to crustaceans (e.g. crabs, lobsters), reptiles (turtles) , seals and other marine mammals, plus seaweeds and sea grasses and a multitude of other species. There is a consensus among marine scientists that the health of Irish seas has suffered in recent decades and that threats from human activities must be better managed. Marine Protection Areas (MPA’S) will help to meet the commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity. MPA’s are needed to protect and help sea life recover from decades of abuse. The designation of a network of Marine Protection Areas will also help to provide protection in critical habitats for nationally important mobile species such as dolphins, whales and basking sharks. There will be a need to get co-operation and agreement locally, regionally and internationally to ensure good implementation and management practices. MPA’s would give a range of benefits, including mitigation against extreme weather impacts, and will give a boost to inshore and offshore fisheries. There will be many economic and social benefits in creating a network of MPA’s. There will be huge value in the overspill effects of MPA’s in Irish waters. MPA’s are acknowledged in their role of seeding the biological diversity and increasing fish, shellfish and crustacean stocks in neighbouring waters. For these benefits to flow, the MPA’s must be well managed and must properly protect ecosystems. There must be a good mix of top-down and bottom-up management practices involving local community groups and stakeholders. MPA’s can be matched to the requirements of local areas. Some of the more sensitive areas being “no-take” zones until stocks recover. Others can be “marine conservation zones” that could be connected to existing SAC’s and SPA’s that might require less stringent management in agreement with local fishing communities. Done correctly Marine Protection Areas will be a “win-win” with benefits for current and future generations. If you are interested in joining and developing the Marine and Coastal Protection Areas of Ireland initiative, see further details on: www.celtichorizons.ie Volunteers and sponsors are most welcome. that has been killed for the winter to feed the poor miserable Greeks who have been landed unceremoniously near them. And that’s only the beginning. The whole story is told by Breandán Ó Cíobháin, Bernie Goggin and others, in the film above, in the Phoenix Cinema at 1.00pm on Saturday 14th. There will be a glass of wine, and the showing will be followed by a Q&A with Ventry born (and resident) producer/director Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin. All are welcome. A Vintage Year For Kerry Football Tadhg Evans This time last year, Kerry football was supposedly facing into an immediate and irrevocable decline. After a heavy defeat at the hands of Mayo, which left them without a win from their opening three games of the 2014 league campaign, Joe Brolly proclaimed that the production line in the Kingdom had ground to a halt. As it happened, Kerry would maintain their Division One status relatively comfortably thanks to three successive wins, but a tame defeat to Cork in the final game of their campaign was enough to keep the critics interested. Brolly was not without company. After a stuttering victory over an improved Clare outfit in Munster, Colm Parkinson declared that the current Kerry crop were ‘nowhere near the level needed to challenge for All-Irelands’. The popular view within GAA circles was that Kerry football was facing into a very bleak period. While emotion probably formed the basis for these predictions more so than reason, morale within the county itself was at an uncharacteristically low ebb. It was hardly the backdrop you would expect to a season that was remarkably satisfying even by Kerry’s very high standards. The revival, if there ever really was a lull, started last April with Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne’s deserved win in the Hogan Cup final over Derry side St. Patrick’s Maghera, a victory claimed under the tutelage of Kerry senior manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice. While the result would obviously have no influence on the performance of our senior charges, I came away from Croke Park that day feeling considerably better about the state of football within our county. The game itself was no classic, but the manner in which the victory had been ground out was very satisfying. The Pobalscoil were wholly dominant in the opening half, but a palpable nervousness when presented with excellent chances looked to have undermined their hopes. Maghera were unspectacular, but efficient, and their potent counter-attack established a 1-4 to 0-2 lead at half-time. The match was following a template that would have been all too familiar within Kerry footballing circles over the preceding years, and another frustrating defeat to Ulster opposition appeared to be in the offing. What happened in the second half typified the year that was in store for Kerry football. Maghera’s five point lead was cancelled out within a few plays. Roibeárd Ó Sé’s goal after just two minutes of the second half would provide the impetus for a scarcely believable win. Having been frustrating at times in the opening half, the Pobalscoil showed remarkable maturity once momentum had swung their way. Marc Ó’Conchúir’s performance at midfield was one to behold, while Fitzmaurice’s decision to move Tom Ó’Súilleabháin from corner back to corner forward underlined his tactical astuteness. Ó’Súillebháin would kick two pointed frees in the second half, and was instrumental in the Pobalscoil’s successful attacking movements. Such an inspired and audacious tactical decision left me in no doubt that the Kerry senior footballers had the right man at the helm. Predictions that Dublin would claim a monopoly of football’s most coveted prizes in 2014 were rife, but Kerry football quietly set about its work. Their senior team belied their status as underdogs in the Munster final, as they humiliated Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. After a routine victory over a naïve Galway team, Kerry would have to consider themselves very lucky to bring an impressive Mayo to a replay in their All-Ireland semi-final. The second match was a classic. Mayo were arguably the better team again, and Cormac Reilly’s lamentable refereeing performance certainly put the Connacht champions at a considerable disadvantage, but Kerry’s performance was of a very high standard, and that should not be dismissed. What was most heartening about the victory was the depth of talent that was clearly at Kerry’s disposal. While the more established names of O’Donoghue, David Moran and Kieran Donaghy were excellent, the introductions of Jonathan Lyne and Pa Kilkenny were of crucial importance. Paul Geaney had a disappointing game in normal time, but showed tremendous character in kicking an excellent point upon his redeployment. It typified Kerry’s performance. In the final, the likes of the inexperienced Paul Murphy and Peter Crowley did plenty more to justify the All-Star awards that they would eventually receive. In a dull but fascinating game of football, it was Kerry who refused to buckle. The performance did nothing to promote the game, but the style of football they played was entirely necessary. 10 West Kerry Live

It proved that Fitzmaurice had learned from the mistakes made by Kerry managers during the noughties. These mistakes derived from the erroneous belief that the Kerry public would not tolerate the kind of dour, formulaic play that supposedly goes against ‘the Kerry way’. The victory was sweet, and the difference in style from their performances against Cork and Mayo showed just how adaptable our senior team had become. Earlier that day, an excellent Kerry minor team had ended a twenty year wait for the under-18 title with a very professional display. The Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne team that had claimed Hogan Cup success provided the backbone of the side, perhaps fitting seeing as it was them who had kick started Kerry’s vintage year. In recent weeks, the strength in depth of our club scene has been showcased with All-Ireland victories for Ardfert at intermediate level and Brosna in the junior equivalent. While Slaughtneil were deserving winners of a brilliant senior club semi-final, Austin Stacks acquitted themselves admirably and could well have been in Croke Park on Saint Patrick’s Day pursuing a unique club treble for the county. Club matters are rarely illustrative of future inter-county success, but it’s enough to show just how strong Kerry football is across the board. The doubters haven’t gone away. Many still feel that the Kerry senior team is one of the weakest we have had for many years. How people from outside the county feel they can judge young players, who are still very inexperienced in comparison to others playing for top counties, is beyond me. What’s more, they are failing to acknowledge the potential that is there. Many of these players do not even have ten championship games worth of experience to their name, but have already taken the game’s most coveted title. Fitzmaurice’s main challenge will be in keeping these players motivated, as it is often very difficult to maintain the levels required for sustained success. You only have to look at Clare’s timid performance in last year’s hurling championship to see that potential coupled with immediate success is no guarantee of immediate dominance. But if people persist in doubting Kerry’s senior outfit, the task of motivating his charges will be made considerably easier for Fitzmaurice. On the evidence of their deserved win over Dublin in a hotly contested league game last weekend, it will take a very good team to dethrone Kerry in 2015.

contest. Thankfully, both ideas were dropped.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Wednesday, March 6.

By Ted Creedon Monday, February 25, 1985. The first of the new season’s crop of tomatoes were picked in the CFCD glasshouses today - probably the earliest tomatoes ever picked there. Noel Kavanagh and Carty Herbst called to the house to talk about the future of the Kerry Currach Assoc.

Wednesday, February 27. The big news today is that Des O’Malley T.D. has been expelled by Fianna Fáil for failing to vote with F.F. in the recent Amendment to the Family Planning Act. The other main story today is that the American dollar is getting too strong for European currencies. Invited by Brendan Greaney to a meeting of the youth club in the presbytery tonight. Enjoyed it and hope to be of some help.

Thursday, February 28. Nine RUC officers were killed in Newry last night in a mortar bomb attack. CFCD boss Garóid Ó Brosnacháin presented a box of new tomatoes to the Minister for the Gaeltacht in front of the Dáil this afternoon. Thinking about last night’s youth meeting. Maybe we could publish a local magazine or community paper which could generate income for the club.

Letter from Sean McGrail at the Maritime Museum in London asking for the negatives relating to the currach built by Eddie Hutch for the Gdansk Museum. Went to the presbytery at 8.30 pm and met the newly formed youth club ‘magazine committee’. They are: Jennifer and Karen O’Leary, (Sgt O’Leary’s daughters) Irene Flannery, Maria Granville, Christine Sweeney and Gráinne Sheehy. We discussed possible content and a name. This wasn’t resolved but ‘The Dingle Review’ was a strong candidate.

Friday, March 8. Went to a meeting of the Tomás Ashe committee in the Lispole Hall at 8.30 pm. We discussed the proposed commemorative plaque for the patriot’s birthplace in Kinard. Also, to get Brian de Staic to produce 3 medals. One gold for President Hillery, who will be invited to a day of commemoration in July, and a silver and bronze medal for the winners of an essay competition. Went to the Hillgrove at 10.30 pm for the Kerry Kidney Unit dance. The place was deserted until after the pubs closed. The band was called Jumbalya and £750 collected at the door.

Sunday, March 10. Went out rowing with the Doonshean canoe and crew after lunch. There wasn’t enough water at the pier to launch her so we went out from the beach at the Skellig Hotel. The harbour was very shallow and we had to pull carefully until we got to the outer channel. The wind kept us busy. One of the oars was borrowed and should have been thrown overboard. We pulled back to Clooshmore and back to the Skellig by 4pm.

Friday, March 1. Phone call from Prof. Peter Woodman at UCC. He has secured a grant of £5,000 from the R.I.A to excavate at Ferriters Cove. He’ll be coming with a team of 6 or 8 people for the last two weeks of August and the first two weeks of Sept. He’s looking for accommodation. Letter from James Gallagher of the North American Currach Assoc. asking for dates of regattas here in Ireland. Spoke to Fr. Godley about a youth magazine. He’s full of support for the idea and gave me a few samples of Club Bhréanainn magazines from the past couple of years.

Sunday, March 3. Went to see the youth club activities in the CBS hall tonight. About 30 young people turned up and were playing soccer and basketball in the main hall. There was a pool table and tennis table on the stage. Some guys were messing with the main light switch. Gene Courtney, the baker, who is a supervisor at the club had to step in.

Monday, March 4. Metting of Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne tonight and only three others present; Micheál MacGiobúin, Doncha Ó Conchúir and Gearóid Ó Brosnacháin.. The main discussion related to an offer by Paudie Fitzgerald to OCD to restore the old watermill at the timber mill. It seems that the mill race, which ran for about a mile before reaching the mill, has been removed or filled in and permission to re-open it would have to be sought from the landowners before any work could begin .It would be nice to see it all restored but it could be very costly.

Tuesday, March 5. Letter from the RNLI thanking the Brendan Festival committee for the recent donation of £25. Meeting of the festival committee in Benners Hotel tonight which started at 9pm and ended at midnight. Far too long. A lot of time was wasted on discussions about a beer-drinking contest and a wet t-shirt 12 West Kerry Live

Now spring has arrived I can wander out of my den. I have spent the last two winters in almost total hibernation writing a book on herbs. Finally it has gone to the publishers and hopefully it should hit the bookshelves later this year. Excitingly it will contain a collection of inspiring images from the gifted nature photographer Rob Beighton! In recent days I have swapped keyboard for potting bench and once again feel liberated in my polytunnel: I have star-trekked back to my planet and plant production has begun. The first seeds I have sown are lettuce mix, rocket and the hardier oriental greens such as mizuna and pak choi. Each year I try to limit my growing to approximately 50 varieties. I could easily get sidetracked into growing obscure, non-saleable oddities: and I hate waste. Keeping stock over winter here is not very successful as high rainfall can cause many plants in smaller pots to rot. Temperatures have recently plummeted back down so I will delay further sowings until the thermometer creeps back up to at least 10ºC. New introductions this year will include red veined wild rocket and chicory! I also have a few surprises for the flower and bee garden! There is a misconception that the herb kingdom is a small, select group of plants-however it is in fact quite the opposite. It is a vast dynasty encompassing all kinds of individuals. The herb growing community is no less diverse. One of my first student friends in the Botanic Gardens, Dublin was a girl called Ziggy. She was an extremely colourful character in both manner and looks. Her passion for herbs was infectious and she was forever leading me into the herb garden. My knowledge back then on herbs was sparse; I had just begun my journey as a horticulturist. I remember her vividly, swinging basket in hand obsessing about herbs. Today I understand that obsession for it has infiltrated my gardening world. Being very much a plant person my own interpretation of a herb extends beyond the dictionary’s definition which says that any plant ‘used in the making of medicines or in cooking’ is a herb. After three decades of growing, studying and exploring I have come to the conclusion that any plant containing hidden properties which may be utilised can be called a herb! Such examples include Chrysanthemum cinerarifolium which forms the basis of the organic pesticide pyrethrum and Anthemis tinctoria aka Dyer’s Chamomile which does as its name suggests. We cultivate herbs unknowingly in our gardens. Many are extremely decorative, often producing aromatic foliage or fragrant flowers, sometimes a combination of both occurs as in the case of French lavender! We plant lupins and aquilegias in our borders, violas and nasturiums in our hanging baskets, and we deck our walls with roses and honeysuckle. Apart from the cultivated species, we are surrounded by the wild ones, the super-seeding dandelions in our lawn, the abandoned briars in the hedge and the banished nettles in the ditch. Finally we remember the old friends of the forest: the oak, holly and birch. All of these plants I have mentioned are herbs, and, if you look more closely you will see their secrets have been unveiled and their hidden properties revealed and fervently used down through the centuries! Greta’s Herbs will be on sale shortly at the following outlets: Foxy Johns Dingle, Keanes Garage Lispole, O Donnells Shop Annascaul, Miltown Organic Store and Mace Camp. Greta McCarthy-O'Brien qualified in Amenity Horticulture at Botanic Gardens Dublin in 1983 and has been growing herbs in Annascaul for over 10 years. www.gretasherbs.com email:gretasherbs@yahoo.com 086-3169716

A group of work experience students from Castlegregory and Milltown Secondary Schools recently spent a week with us learning about all facets of film-making from script to screen. Sinead, Jamie and Adina became camera operators, sound technicians, scriptwriters, directors and actors, producing “Deception”, a comedy/mystery with a twist. In this short film, workers at a TV station are caught up in one person’s murderous rampage. The unlucky station is not Scrogall TV, despite the resemblance! The film is awaiting its final edit and will be available soon. Another week saw another group of young people coming in to Scrogall for our film making workshop for teenagers. Conor, Liam and Patrick spent their mid-term break transforming an initial idea into their own action film, picking up all the necessary technical skills, from storyboarding to editing, along the way. “Oblivious” is a short film full of special effects and exciting fight scenes, following the adventures of a mysterious teleporting hero. Statins Eddie O’ Grady Elevated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) has long been established as a major cause of coronary heart disease(CHD). The group of cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins are widely used in the management of atherosclerotic disease processes that include CHD, myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease(Pastemak et al. 2002). Although these drugs have been very successful in managing the cardiovascular health of many patients, they also can have some potential adverse side effects . These include muscle pain, inflammation, cramps and/ or weakness in areas such as the shoulder, neck, back, abdomen, hip, lower limbs, biceps brachii and masseter muscles etc. (Bennet et al. 2003). If left unchecked these symptoms may progress on to more serious conditions (Thompson et al. 2003). When detected early however, statin-related symptoms are reversible after withdrawal of the statin(Sinzinger et al. 2002). It is thus important for both physical therapists and physiotherapists to be aware of these associated symptoms linked to statin usage, because they frequently screen patients with musculoskeletal complaints. It becomes even more relevant when a patient presents with muscle pain, tenderness, weakness or inflammation that cannot be explained (for example, pain that is not due to physical work or injury). Your doctor can carry out a blood test to measure a substance in your blood called creatine kinase (CK), which is released into the blood when your muscles are inflamed or damaged. If the level of CK in your blood is more than five times the normal level, your doctor may advise you to stop taking the statin. Regular exercise can also sometimes lead to a rise in CK, so tell your doctor if you have been exercising a lot. Once your CK levels have returned to normal, your doctor may suggest you start taking the statin again, but at a lower dose. It is important to note that a healthy diet and exercise can often reduce your LDL cholesterol to within the normal range without the need for medication. This is best done with the aid of a qualified dietician, backed up by follow up blood testing and advice from your doctor. References Bennett W.E., Drake A.J., Shakir K.M. GLAS SCHEME OPENED. The new €1.4bn agri-environment scheme GLAS open. A total of €1.4bn has been allocated to GLAS over the lifetime of the programme, allowing a standard ‘package’ of up to € 5,000 for eligible farmers per annum. The most important thing about the new GLAS scheme is to decide who is going to complete your application. It must be carried out by an accredited advisor, and anyone not of the official Department list may not have this accreditation, and therefore may submit an invalid application, on your behalf. Once you decide who is going to do the application, you must have your advisor register you with the Department, as all GLAS applications MUST be done, on-line. This simply requires your name, address, telephone number and herd number, as they appear on your SPS form. There is also an option to have this completed by text, but if you choose this method, you must reply to the text message from DAFM or your application will not be processed. With only 70 days between now and the closing date, you will have to decide fast who to pick, and the decision may not be totally yours, as there are limits to how many applications an advisor can process in this time limit. Those 73 days includes weekends, bank holidays, holidays and the St Patrick’s Day an Easter weekend. This is only 60 working days. Many will find it hard to change advisor, if you are already associated with one, as others may not have time to deal with you, as a new client. He advice would be to stick to who you know, and if he is not available, look for someone close to your area. The last thing you want is someone that will visit the area, charge you then be gone until 2016, when scheme records and another fee needs completion. As regard fees, these will vary but are generally around the €500 mark for a GLAS application and €850 for a GLAS application with Commonage Management Plan. It is up to you to shop around, but with only 60 working days till 15th May, people should move fast. Rumours are abound that all applications submitted will have to be admitted to the scheme. This is not confirmed, but if this is true, the amount available per applicant will have to be reduced, as there is only so much money in the pot, and it has to be stretched over five years. Don’t be surprised if you are told at some point in the future that the maximum amount payable will be lass that that claimed, at present. The application process for Commonage farmers has been simplified. The requirement for 50% participation has been reconfigured as a target, rather than an eligibility criterion, and all shareholders can now submit individual applications to join GLAS in their own right. Commonage advisers will also be given more time to complete the necessary plans. Individual applications to join GLAS by commonage shareholders would not be delayed while these plans were being prepared. The full plan would still have to be submitted before any applications could be approved, but adopting this approach would provide more time to advisers need to prepare these plans. THE SCOTTISH DEROGATION For a variety of reasons, a number of active farmers did not establish entitlements under the Single Payment Scheme and consequently do not hold an Allocation Right for the purposes of establishing entitlements under the new Scheme. To exclude such farmers from the Basic Payment Scheme would place these farmers at a significant disadvantage. It has therefore been decided to implement the Scottish Derogation Provision of the Basic Payment Regulation. In line with the support granted under all previous Pillar I schemes, this provision is only available to persons who undertook their agricultural activity within the beef, dairy, sheep or arable sectors. Farmers applying under this measure will be required to provide verifiable evidence of such production during the 2013 scheme year. The application process for the Scottish Derogation will be made available in April of this year and will be by way of an online facility. Further details will be announced in due course. GUIDE TO BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME PAYMENT ENTITLEMENTS Farmers who have not already received it in the post, will soon receive a Guide to Basic Payment Scheme entitlements which will give an indication of the number and value of entitlements they may be allocated under the new Scheme. The Basic Payment Scheme and Greening Payment replace the Single Payment Scheme in 2015 and a new set of payment entitlements will be allocated to those eligible to take part in the scheme. To be eligible to take part in the scheme an applicant must be an active farmer who holds an allocation right and must submit a Basic Payment Scheme application in 2015. Direct Payments to eligible farmers will be based on the value of their Basic payment scheme entitlements together with a Greening payment and payment on any other associated scheme that the farmer participates in. The number of entitlements that will be allocated will be determined by the number of eligible hectares declared by the farmer in 2013 or 2015, whichever is the lesser. The value of entitlements that will be allocated will be based on a fixed percentage of the value of Single Payment Scheme entitlements owned by the farmer in 2014 and any payment received under the 2014 Grassland Sheep Scheme. A definitive calculation of the number and value of entitlements cannot be issued until all land is declared and accepted as eligible in 2015. However, this Guide will provide an estimate of the number of entitlements that may be allocated and their value, based on the information already held in the Department regarding 2013 land references and 2014 entitlement values. It will also indicate the convergence path that the values will take over the course of the scheme between 2015 and 2019 and the portion of the overall payment that will be comprised of Greening payment. All data used for calculating this guide to Basic Payment Scheme entitlements is based on estimated values as the National Average cannot be calculated until all eligible land is declared for the 2015 scheme year. Following that, a definitive statement will issue to all farmers before April 2016. Allocation Right: Farmers who received a direct payment in 2013 under the Single Payment Scheme, the Burren Life Scheme, the Grassland Sheep Scheme or the Beef Data Programme have an automatic right to receive an allocation of Basic Payment Scheme entitlements.

Total = € 4,995 This is a realisable targetable scheme allocation, without too much effort. It would require putting aside 10.05 ha for GLAS purpose leaving the rest of the farm to be managed on a traditional commercial basis. and it would generate €5,000 annually towards your farm income. So, while it is not a great scheme, it is not a bad one, and many should consider it. What you have to ask is, can I make this amount of money on my cattle or sheep enterprise, on less than 30 acres. The answer is there. Over the next few issues, different options will be discussed and those options best suited or not suitable for this region, or traditional farming methods in West Kerry will be discussed. Don’t go for the big money options, as they will require some tillage equipment, and if you don’t have this machinery yourself, you will be at the mercy of others to ensure your compliance in the scheme. BUDGET AND PAYMENT STRUCTURE A total of €1.45bn has been allocated to GLAS over the lifetime of the Pro-

20 West Kerry Live

gramme (period to 2020). GLAS is structured as a ‘package’ and offers a maximum payment of €5,000 per applicant per full calendar year, except where GLAS+ applies. In this case, some farmers undertaking particularly challenging actions may qualify for GLAS+ and for a top-up payment of up to €2,000 per year. Typically GLAS+ will apply where more than one Priority Environmental Asset exists on the farm and the combined cost of addressing these exceeds €5,000. However, in the case if the various bird-species identified as at risk (including the hen harrier) it will be possible to drawdown payment of up to €7,000 a year on these alone. It is anticipated that some 50,000 farmers will ultimately join GLAS.

Reference Value: The value of entitlements to be allocated to a farmer will be based on a fixed percentage of the value held by a farmer in 2014. A farmer’s 2014 value consists of the total value of entitlements, either owned or leased, and of the payment received under the Grassland Sheep Scheme, if any. Convergence: All entitlements held under the Basic Payment Scheme are subject to convergence. Entitlements with an initial unit value that is above the Basic Payment Scheme national average will decrease in value over the five years of the scheme. Entitlements that have an initial unit value that is below 90% of the Basic Payment Scheme national average will gradually increase in value over the five years of the scheme. All entitlements must reach a minimum value of 60% of the Basic Payment Scheme national average by 2019. By 2019, no farmer will receive a payment per hectare of more than €700. Nuts about Nuts! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It’s little wonder that the first three letters in “nutrition” is n-u-t as these little gems are nature’s perfect, bite-sized, convenient, power snack! Most so-called nuts are actually seeds, legumes or dried fruits of various plants but unless you are a botanist there’s no need to get bogged down with nit-picking to discover the great health benefits of what we call Nuts! The squirrels are no fools when they stock up with nuts in Autumn to see them through the Winter and into the Spring as they provide slow-release energy that can sustain them when there is little else in the larder! For us humans, the energy provided by nuts is slowreleasing too, making them ideal for those of us concerned with maintaining blood sugar levels and avoiding cravings for sugary snacks. Nuts are good sources of protein, fibre, vitamin E, folic acid, copper, magnesium and the amino acid arginine, necessary to prevent heart disease. Nuts are the best dietary source of manganese and contain plant sterols, the compounds now added to some margarines to reduce cholesterol absorption from food, and are a good source of boron, necessary for healthy bones. Most of all, nuts are an excellent source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, the healthy fats necessary for a healthy heart and mind. To know which nut is best for you can be tricky but in a nutshell - indulge in a wide variety of nuts to make sure you get the full benefits of these beauties. As well as containing the nutrients mentioned above some nuts deserve a special mention: Walnuts: if there was a nut hierarchy, walnuts would be king! They are an excellent source of the healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids, which have been found to protect the heart, promote better cognitive function, and provide anti-inflammatory benefits for asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema and psoriasis. Almonds: the only alkalizing nut, almonds also particularly high in magnesium and calcium, great nut to include for healthy bones as well as colon health. Cashews: lower in fat than most nuts, and 65 percent of this fat is unsaturated fatty acids. Of this, 90 percent is oleic acid, the heart-healthy fat found in olive oil. Pecans are an excellent source of over 19 vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and A, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, several B vitamins and zinc. Also, noted for lowering cholesterol and clearing arteries. Brazil nuts : these nuts are extremely nutrient-rich and contain copper, niacin, magnesium, vitamin E and in particular, selenium. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that works to neutralize dangerous free radicals and also needed for thyroid function. Be aware that you only need 3 or 4 of these to meet your selenium requirements. Coconut: The biggest of the bunch - this hairy boyo has much to offer! The delicious fat, extracted from the flesh of the coconut is mainly saturated fat - a fat much despised in health circles. However, the fatty acids that make up coconut saturated fat is

primarily medium-chain triglycerine (MCTs) as opposed to the long-chain triglycerine (LCTs) in saturated fats found in animal produce meat, dairy and eggs. Confused? Don’t worry, all you need to know is that these MCTs are easy to metabolize in the body, the smaller molecules are easily burned up and utilized in many areas of health. Unlike the LCTs found in animal sources of saturated fat which are larger molecules and are more difficult to breakdown, resulting in fat storage, weight gain and associated health problems. The positive effect of coconut oil (fat) benefits a wide range of organs but in particular - the heart, bowel and skin - the same cannot be said for animal-based saturated fat! The fat found in coconut has been used in many cultures for thousands of years in traditional medicine and now, science has also validated its many uses in modern medicine. A jar of raw coconut fat is wonderful addition to your ingredients store offering flavour, smoothness and health benefits to everyday cooking. It remains stable with high heat making it ideal for frying – most other oils are damaged at high temperatures. Coconut milk is the liquid that comes from grated coconut flesh and is also highly nutritious - a delicious alternative to dairy milk in cereals, porridge, soups and ethnic dishes. Lastly, coconut water (the clear liquid inside young coconuts) is also gaining reputation amongst the sporty crowd. Coconut water is available in ready-to-drink cartons - it is low in carbohydrates and fat but high in potassium and other replenishing electrolytes often lost during high intensity training or competition. There’s much to be said for the coconut as well as our other nutty foods but remember - variety and moderation is the key to unlock all the health benefits of these marvellous morsels. A handful a day is a good portion guide for most people - anymore is just...nuts!

Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School This is a perfect salad to serve as a lunch or as a side to any meal. Sometimes when we use the word salad we think it should only be served during the summer and we think it has to have lettuce and tomatoes. A salad can be put together with any combination of food and then lightly dressed. The roasted cauliflower is a really nice additin to this dish, by roasting it brings out such a nutty flavour. I have used feta for this salad but feel free to change it with a goats cheese if you prefer. Ingredients 1 Cauliflower cut into small dice

Method Put some rapeseed oil in a pan over medium heat, add the cauliflower and cook for about five minutes at this heat whilst continually tossing it in the pan, making sure you brown it all over. Take it off the heat and and keep it aside. Meanwhile heat some rapeseed oil in a deep, heavy-based frying pan or saute pan. Gently fry the onion until softened and garlic. Add the barley and stir for about a minute until the barley are coated with the oil and butter. Pour in the wine and stir continuously until it has cooked into the barley. Add a good ladle of hot stock and season well with salt and pepper. Turn the heat down so the stock is simmering gently. Keep adding ladles of stock as it cooks into the barley, stirring and moving the rice around in the pan. After about 15 minutes the barley should be soft but still should have a bit of bite left in it. The texture of this dish should be thick and creamy, but not too loose. Add extra stock if necessary. At this stage add the roasted cauliflower and stir it in, next add in the spinach and allow it to cook for two minutes or so until it has willted. Add the hazelnuts and season well with lemon. To serve scatter some of the feta over it. Enjoy!!

Dingle Bay Rovers Juniors Our newly formulated under 12's team and their first outing on the 31st of January drawing 1-1 to Camp. Well done to all. Our under 12s came out on top in a 5-0 win over Killorglin C in the preliminary round of the Kerry Cup. The panel was as follows: In goal Patrick Saunders(vicecaptain), Fergal MacEoin, Eli Buchanan, Odhran Slattery, Ben o'Brien(captain), Tomás ó Sé, Cormac ó Cinnéide, Tadhg Kennedy, Rónán ó Beaglaoich, Rian o'Sullivan, Kieran Bambury, Elijah Greenan, Liam ó hOgáin, Elliot Murphy, Alex Buchanan. Scorers today were Fergal MacEoin, Tadhg Kennedy, Rónán ó Beaglaioch and Cormac ó Cinnéide. All players played well. Well done to our under 13s who overcame Park C on Saturday 14/02/'15 on a scoreline of 12-0 in the first round of the Kerry Cup played in Park,Tralee. Early start for the DBR u13's on Saturday last travelling to Camp for our derby league game. Both sets of players deserve huge credit for serving up a wonderful game in very windy conditions . Our lads started the better with the wind at their backs and took the lead with a good goal by Aodhán Devine. Camp were finding it hard at this stage to even get the ball out of their own half. DBR kept pressing to increase our lead but it was Camp who were to get the next goal against the run of ...play. Half-time 1-1. Kenny and Tommy left the lads in no doubt what was needed in the 2nd half if we were to come out of this important game with anything. We succeeded in getting two more goals in the second half including a penalty scored by Dylan Geaney and came out as the

winners with a final score of 3-2. We thank Camp for the great game and always their kind welcoming. The panel on Saturday: Cathal ó Muircheartaigh, Seamus ó Loingsigh, Seán Leahy, Tadhg ó Murchú, Tomás ó Sé, Dara ó Beaglaoí, Cathal ó Beaglaoí, Naoise MacGearailt, Aodhán ó Dubháin, Pádraig ó Cearna, Dylan Geaney, Patrick Saunders, Eoghan de hÓra, Colm ó hEartáin, Ben ó'Brien, Fergal MacEoin, Josh ó Cinnéide, Dean McAuliffe, Niall Browne. Man of the match going to Aodhán who did a superb job right through. Everyone gave it their all and did very well. We also thank our supporters the parents who travelled and brought the players to the game. Also well done to Cormac ó Cinnéide, Naoise Mac Gearailt and Aodhán ó Dubháin who have made it onto the Team of the Week over the past two weeks. Our u12s are out next Saturday (7th March) playing at home to Killorglin B in the first round of the Cup. Training continues every Thursday night back at the DBR pitch in Gallarus for both under 12 and 13 at 6-7:30 and on Saturday mornings if there is no game then training will go ahead and if there is only one team out then training will continue for the rest at 10:30-12. New players always welcome!!! Contact Damien on 086-3816277. We are bringing our under 13s on an outing to Cork City F.C on Friday 13th of March to watch a Cork City game. This will be good for them and they will learn different skills and hopefully take good points from the game. We are hoping to have a Clothes Recycle on Thursday the 12th of March back at the Clubhouse and asking everybody to fill as many bags as they can and drop them back between 5 and 6 to the pitch at Gallarus on Thursday evening which will then be collected on Friday morning. Please pass this message around.

Nature’s Knowledge

throat and wheezing occur. The herb is very beneficial when used for lung conditions, which involve heat, phlegm and dryness and a strong decoction of the leaf has proved beneficial for tuberculosis.

Healing with Herbs Coltsfoot Tussilago farfara Parts Used; leaves and flower Family; Asteraceae

Deirdre Daly Coltsfoot is one of the first flowers to appear in spring with bright yellow flowers appearing singly at the top of a stem 15 to 20 centimetres in height. The flowers similar to dandelions can appear as early as February and are succeeded first by dandelion-like clocks, then the leaves, which appear in June. Small leaves however often begin to make their appearance before the flowering season is over making identification easier. The plant however can be very dissimilar in appearance during its different growth patterns with the flowers curiously appearing before the leaves. Because of this unusual characteristic, an old name for coltsfoot was ‘filius ante patrem’, which means the son before the father. The name coltsfoot on the other hand was attributed to the herb’s likeness, some would have it, to horse’s hooves. The leaves of coltsfoot closely resemble butterbur Petasites vulgaris, which is abundant in Corca Dhuibhne growing in large patches locally along the roadside and along shaded river banks. Though this plant has similar medicinal uses to coltsfoot it is the root of the butterbur that is used. The leaves of the butterbur, which are larger and more rounded, must not be confused with coltsfoot so be sure you have the right plant. Medicinally the leaves of coltsfoot being more plentiful are more commonly used though the flowers are equally beneficial. The leaves are roughly heart shaped, glossy green on the upper surface and coated with soft down on the underside of the leaf. Coltsfoot can be found on disturbed ground, preferring poor clay type soil and can be invasive so care needs to be taken if you want to introduce it into your garden. Coltsfoot is mostly used for the respiratory system and the herb has long been used for coughs and respiratory tract conditions, providing relief for chronic and acute bronchitis, irritating coughs, whooping cough and asthma. Wheezing and emphysema will also benefit from the use of this herb. Coltsfoot is a good herb to have in your first-aid cupboard as it provides symptom focused relief when coughs, sore

Traditionally coltsfoot leaves were used as a smoking tobacco to alleviate coughs and today it is one of the ingredients in herbal tobacco. Coltsfoot has a sweet aniseed taste and can be combined with mullein Verbascum thaspus to soothe dry coughs and fennel foeniculum vulgare both for taste and as a soothing expectorant. A poultice of coltsfoot can be applied externally for boils, infected wounds and ulcers. To make a poultice mix the chopped or bruised leaves with honey to make a paste and apply to boils sores and wounds as needed. Change the poultice daily until healed. The herb contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids so caution is advised when taking the herb internally as these alkaloids can be toxic to the liver. The concentration, however, of alkaloids is very low in tea infusions but it is important that the herb is not taken for prolonged periods and not taken in therapeutic quantities for longer than six weeks at a time, waiting some months before taking the herb therapeutically again. Coltsfoot can be taken as a tea and combined if liked with fennel as a soothing expectorant. The leaves or/and the flowers can be infused and left to brew for ten minutes. One to two teaspoons of dried herb or 3 teaspoons of fresh flowers or/and leaves per cup can be taken three times a day therapeutically. Tincture dosage is 2 to 4 ml three times a day. Coltsfoot can also be made into a syrup combined with other herbs such as thyme and sage for dry coughs wheezing or breathlessness. Safety considerations; Do not take the herb in therapeutic doses for longer than six weeks leaving a gap of some months before taking again. Do not take if pregnant or nursing Some people may be sensitive to plants from the Asteraceae family Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Camp Juniors FC Not a bad start to 2015 with seven of the CAMP JUNIORS squads having entered the Kerry Cup competitions and all but one have now progressed to quarter final stages. Our U11s, U14s and U16s are edging towards Division titles with other teams hoping to finish well and this season sees a record no. of our young players involved with the Kerry Emerging Talent Programmes and playing in county colours. The action from last weekend…. U13 DIVISION 2: Neighbours Dingle Bay Rovers were over for a crunch top of the table match played in very windy conditions on Saturday last. The strength of the Dingle lads was to determine this game and despite a 1-1 half time score Dingle edged ahead through an own goal followed shortly afterwards by a penalty. With the JUNIORS down to 10 men, there was a rally and a great strike from Cian Cronin (Castle) gave us a very exciting final 10 minutes. However there was to be no happy ending, a deserved win for the neighbours and best wishes to them in their search for the title. FINAL SCORE: CAMP JUNIORS B 2 – 3 DINGLE BAY ROVERS

Asdee FC v CAMP JUNIORS B (KO – 10.30am – Asdee) TRAINING - for all squads takes place during the week at the Camp Astro-Pitch with the times as follows, Monday - U13 (6.00 ~ 7.00pm), Tuesday - U10/U11 (6.00 ~ 7.00pm), Wednesday - U12 & U14 (5.00 ~ 8.00pm), Thursday - U15 & U16 (6.30 ~ 8.00pm), Saturday - U7, U8, U9 (10~12noon) New players are always welcome and can join at any of the training nights. U11 CUP - Round 2: Second outing in the Cup for the U11s and a strong win against St. Brendan's Park means they will now be in the hat for the 3rd Round draw. Goals from Castelgregory lads CJ Daniels and Tadgh Scanlon, Cloghane pair Paudie Fitz and Daragh Quirke with another from Ryan Scanlon-Newstead (Annascaul) brought victory and another exciting cup date for later this month. FINAL SCORE: PARK C 1 – 7 CAMP JUNIORS U12 CUP - Round 1 On a windy and wet afternoon it was a trip out to Mastergeeha for an exciting Round 1 cup match for the 12B squad. From the outset the JUNIORS took control of the game and the defence trio of Donal Crean (Camp), Alain Beaujouain and Eimer O Donoghue (both Castle) were very commanding, leaving keeper Ciara Butler with little to do. Jade Harkin (Blennervville) was flying on the right wing and reward came after 10 minutes when she played to Cian Griffin (Camp) who fired in a great shot and the opening goal. However there were to be no more goals for CAMP with the Mastergeeha keeper putting in a Man-Of-TheMatch performance and against the run of play they drew level with a fine individual piece of skill. Extra time it was. See-saw action had everyone on and off the pitch in a frenzy and it looked like the JUNIORS would get the rub when awarded a penalty in the dying minutes but were denied againby the keeper....Final whistle and on to a penalty shoot-out....High Drama!!!…However missing three of the penalties meant the JUNIORS had to bow out of Cup action. FINAL SCORE: MASTERGEEHA B 1 – 1 CAMP JUNIORS B (3-2 AET) U16 CUP - Round 1 CAMP were made to work all the way for their first round cup win by a plucky Listowel B side. The high winds made good football almost impossible and it was the JUNIORS who took an interval lead with a goal from man of the match Joe Kennedy from outside the box. Playing with the breeze in the second half Listowel equalized 15 minutes in and thing got a bit anxious. But with Kieran O'Connor (Inch) superb in goal, the ship was steadied and striker Jimmy O'Grady (Cloghane) tapped in at the other end to put CAMP back in front. A Gearoid Lyne shot from outside the box was to seal the victory with 5 minutes to go and CAMP were through to the quarter finals. FINAL SCORE: CAMP JUNIORS 3 – 1 LISTOWEL CELTIC FIXTURES - 07.03.15 With a lot of Cup games to be decided the club have only 1 game schedules for next weekend U12 – Division 2

á fhorbairt anois. Bhí Bearna mhor sa bhfalla ar dheis. Tá sin atógtha go slachtmhar cheana féin; chosain sé €6,400. Tá an falla trasna thuaidh i mbaol tite. Cosnóidh sé na céadta é seo a dhaingniú agus a theanntú. Ansin tá crainn le cur agus lúbra (maze) agus cros faoi leith le cur i bhfearas. Tá slándáil thine le cinntiú agus deisiúcháin le déanamh. Beidh costais go leor orainn. Táimid buíoch do chuid de na gnólachtaí logánta atá chomh fial sin linn. Tá cúrsa iontach ríomhaireachta ar siúl ag 25 iarrthóirí anseo faoi láthair ar an dara urlár a chabhraíonn go mór linn, faoi mar a dhéanann SHU i gcónaí. Bímid tuisceanach leis an dá chór a bhíonn ag cleachtadh dhá oíche sa tseachtain sa Díseart. Beidh coirm cheoil carthanachta ar mhaith leis an Díseart acu níos déanaí

News from the Diseart

Our publishing venture is our most pofitable enterprise while being a major cultural contribution. I have edited and and published about two hundred issues of our little pastoral quarterly An Sagart in the past 55 years. The number of subscribers has fallen to about 400 so we have to cease publication. The next issue will be the last. A young energetic priest, a native speaker of Irish and curate in Gweedore, Fr. Brian Ó Fearaí, will avail of the social media to fill the vacancy. We wish him every success, bail ó Dhia air. On 13th. March our next book will be launched in Maynooth—the vol. 45 of the Colm Cille Lectures. It will be followed by 5 more vols. this year. One is a huge book of about 800 pages with c. 4 photos to every page. It is by a Dunquin author, and titled Crainn agus Tuir. Please pray for its success. We hope to launch it in the late Autumn near the author’s birthplace. Another is by a past student of mine and deals with the life and poetry of Piaras Mac Gearailt, the author of Is é mo Laoch... Reassessing your system Tom Kennedy I called to some potential solar clients who are very interested in having solar panels fitted, during the course of the conversation, and as part of checking the suitability of the house, I asked to see the hot water cylinder and the press where it was to see if I could fit a solar panel system to it. I said that as part of the system I would change the existing copper cylinder and fit a 300 litre stainless steel solar cylinder instead, to which the home owner said “will that stop my wife and daughter's hair from going green every time they shower”. the answer is not so simple, because the problem lies within the water, due to the fact that what is happening is a metalorgic reaction between the copper and the water, which is probably due to the ph of the water being slightly acidic, which makes the water more aggressive and especially when heated it attacks the copper thus the staining of the hair, tile grout, basins, etc,. Long term, the effect on copper pipes, fittings, is ultimately leaks. The cure - test the water and treat accordingly, then we can fit the new solar panels and not worry about hair colour. I also managed to call to some customers of mine who had just changed in the past couple of weeks their old gas boiler to a high efficiency condensing model. Not only that but as part of the upgrade, some new controls were fitted in order to avail of the grant from the Seai, their heating system was power flushed, treated with inhibitor and a magnetic filter fitted to the system to protect the new boiler. The end result to use the clients own words, " We are delighted with how quickly and efficiently the new boiler was fitted, we are very happy with the performance of the new boiler in that we now have heat in a room that never got hot before, and judging by the amount of gas being used now by the new boiler, we recon, that gas use is down by nearly 50% and now when we want heat we can afford to have it on, thanks very much." The other customer I called to this week had a similar experience, they too have recently upgraded to a new gas condensing boiler, but, the difference is that their old boiler was a standard efficiency oil boiler and they also have a pellet boiler on their system, the customer commented

34 West Kerry Live

that they noticed an improvement in the level of heat even from the pellet system straight after we had power flushed and treated the heating system, like the previous customer, they also availed of the grant from the Seai, but not only that, because they chose to change to gas, the got 1200 litres of free gas from Flogas, and get even more money back from Electric Ireland under their Carbon Credits Scheme. If anything can be learned from these two examples is that outside of any upgrade of a heating system, that certainly any system more than several years old can be greatly be improved by fitting A MAGNETIC FILTER, POWER-FLUSHING and treating the heating system with INHIBITOR, and I have the satisfied customers to prove it, why even one my employees has fitted a magnetic filter to his own heating system, after seeing the before and after effect on The heating system first hand.

Milltown Pyjama Party A pyjama party superbly organised by Bernie Griffin of the Plough Bar, Milltown in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin on the 7th February raised €260. The money will go towards the refurbishment of the outpatients department along with a painting valued at €300 which will be displayed there. The prize for the best dressed went to Mr. Kenneth O’ Neil of Milltown. Bernie would like to thank Ms. Debbie O’ Brien who judged the competition and to Gillian who provided music on the evening. The undoubted highlight of the evening was when Gearóid Dowd was called from the crowd and donned a set of pyjamas. The Plough bar would like to thank all who supported the evet in any way

Mid Kerry League Keel had a good win over Laune Rangers on a cold and windy Sunday morning in Keel. Thankfully it stayed dry for the hour however both teams were missing a few players. Keel started well with 3 points from David Flaherty, Terry O'Sullivan and James Long. Rangers came back with a goal and were unlucky not to score another straight after with the shot just going wide, Keel responded with 2 points from Aaron Murphy and one apiece from Colm O'Neill and David Flaherty. Rangers kicked a free before half time to leave it Keel 0-7 LR 1-1. Laune Rangers scored the opening point of the second half from a free before Terry O'Sullivan put Keel 4 points clear with 2 points from play. Rangers started to come into the game and 2 points from frees were followed by a fortuitous penalty when the foul occurred well outside the square. Rangers now led by a point however a driving run by Colm O'Neill was ended illegally in the square and James Long coolly dispatched the penalty to give Keel a 2 point lead. Both sides finished with 3 more points each, Keel's by Terry O'Sullivan, James Long and David Flaherty. Final Score Keel 1-12 Laune Rangers 2-7. Keel: Luke Flynn, Gavin Evans, Emmet Ashe, Shane Prendiville, Barth Murphy, Donal O'Neill, Eoin O'Neill, Thomas Ladden, Franky Ahern, Colm O'Neill(0-1), Liam O'Shea, David Flaherty(0-3), Terry O'Sullivan(0-4 1f), James Long(1-2 1p 1f) Aaron Murphy(0-2 1f). Christoph Jensen Nine of us packed into our mini-bus to spend a week on the Iveragh Peninsula. The occasion: to practise music with fellow special-needs persons in and around Cahersiveen that culminated in a concert Friday in Waterville. We practised every day for two hours under the guidance of John Billing, who is an accomplished musician from Kilkeel. He arranged a number of golden oldies for an orchestra that included many pretuned harp-like instruments called poly-chords. The practising bore fruit and resulted in a full evening programme performed in the theatre of Tech Amergin, the Community Arts & Education Centre in Waterville, to a full audience. We thank our hosts, Irena and the kind people in and around Cahersiveen for their warm welcome and companionship. Whilst touring the peninsula, including Valentia Island, we received a new perspective of our beautiful Dingle Pensinsula. At home Uta, together with Stephen and Lisa, began producing candles again to replenish our stocks. And the diggers have appeared on the scene once more – this time to connect the new house to the reedbed sewage system. The house is making good progress with the roof almost completed. … and in the Cois Chnoic estate notices have gone up in front of three of the properties requesting change of use from holiday accomodation to permanent dwelling. These dwellings are ear-marked for Camphill’s supported living programme. Watch this space ...

Killorglin Tidy Towns. Killorglin Tidy Towns committee would like to take this moment to welcome our new Chairman Brendan Foley and outgoing Chairman Donie Rue O' Sullivan for their incredible dedication and leadership. We are all about working together as a community keeping our town beautiful and inviting, for the many tourists and visitor who visit throughout the year. Despite the heavy nonstop rain last Saturday morning seven very dedicated tidy towns crew members tackled the work on Scotts Bohereen opposite Dromavalla Cemetery, pruned all of the trees along the walk and picked up all rubbish, to be fair they said the litter wasn't bad there. Anyone interested in joining our crew come along Saturday morning to the monument in the Fair field at 10am, bring gloves, brushes, shovels, pickers, brooms or anything you may have at home that could be useful on the day. Maybe you like planting and would like to help out in that area, please come along and make yourself known to any committee member. The Submissions team are working hard behind the scenes making sure that heavy paperwork gets done so continue the great work guys. We again are asking all the businesses and residents in the town to please keep your front of house weed and litter free. Check out our web page on www.killorglintidytowns.com for the latest and upcoming work being done in your area and follow us on facebook. Like and share to spread the good news. Launch Of Sailing Memoir Dingle man John O’ Connor will launch his sailing memoir “More Than A Voyage” on Saturday 21st March in The Dingle Bay Hotel at 9pm. Drawing on over 30 years of sailing around the Irish, Cornish and Breton coasts the book recounts the voyages undertaken and those people he sailed with and met along the way. Working from logbooks, John spent the best part of two years going down a maritime memory – Feb. 2015 lane which covered over 2,000 hours at sea, more Publishing than 10,000 nautical miles and four different sailing boats to complete the work. The book includes a circumnavigation of Ireland, complete with twenty landfalls, taking in a visit to Dun Aengus in Inis Mór, a stop-over at a golden beach in Portsalon, Co. Donegal, and an inaugural entry to the newly-built marina in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim. There is an account of an audacious entry (for its time) to Kilkeel Harbour in Co. Down at the height of the marching season, with their tricolour flying proudly amid a sea of Union Jack’s. The book also recounts an encounter with a solitary friendly bottlenosed dolphin who fell in love with the boat on a visit to Brittany in 1982 and who began to follow them as they departed again for the south west coast of Ireland. At about this time a certain other solitary friendly bottlenosed dolphin was noticed regularily in and around Dingle Harbour and remains to this day. Could it be ...? With illustrations by Barry Curtin and chart drawings by John himself, “More Than A Voyage” has been a labour of love for the author, who as a qualified boatbuilder raised quite literally within a stones throw of Dingle harbour has spent his life enthralled by all things maritime. Signed copies of “More Than A Voyage” will be available at a discounted rate on the night. All Welcome

In a relatively short space of time an industrious group of people have put in place a PAD network for the town of Killorglin. "These units located in prominent locations throughout the town of Killorglin will, if needed make the ultimate difference to some person and their family" said Derek O Leary Chairperson of the Killorglin Heartsaver Defib Group. "Statistics now show that the first 10 minutes of a cardiac incident are the most important and the attachment and use of an automated external defibrillator along with good quality CPR is the persons best chance of surviving such an incident." "We have been working hard over the last 9 months and through the support of local businesses and the people of Killorglin we are delighted to have erected 3 AED's in their prominent yellow cabinets around the town of Killorglin and these 3 units join the existing unit at the CYMS which will soon be housed in one of the yellow cabinets also. It is hoped to grow the network over the next 12 months to cover a wider area of the town and its surrounding area". "Unfortunately the statistics also indicate that you are most likely to use and AED on someone you know rather than a stranger so these units are relevant to everyone. The AED's themselves are simple to use and issue verbal commands to any person that turns one on".

The group will be supporting the erection of these units with low cost community training and have scheduled two dates, namely 9th of April and the 9th of May for the 3.5 hour training course which teach CPR and AED use. Anyone interested in attending these courses can contact the group on 087717 8333 or at killorglindefinheartsaver@gmail.com Comhgháirdeas mor groi le foireann Scoil Naomh Eirc a thug an bua leo sa chomórtas féna 13 agus leis an bhfoireann óg a ghlac páirt féna 11. Soccer Senior result: St Brendans Park B 5-2 Castlegregory Celtic FC. A tough day at the office last Sunday saw a very clinical Park side capitalise on their chances while we were left to rue chances gone a begging. Castle both began and ended this game well and on another day could have scored more but a very well organised Park side scored with virtually every chance created and took all three points. To compound our day, top scorer Ian Flynn was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a badly dislocated shoulder, and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery - his goals will surely be missed in the run in to the season. Scorers were Shane Kenny (pen) and a Park OG. With 4 games to go there is still a long way to go and we are still in the hunt for a place in the league final. Team: Declan Owens; Damien McMahon; Shane Kenny; Conor Boden; Dominic Spillane; Maurice Slattery; Alan McNamara; Damien Finn; Enda Whelan; Brandon Hoare; Ian Flynn. Tás ag an saol go gcuireann imreoirí na linne seo na slaoda allais agus uaireanta fada, dhóibh agus ní éiríonn leo bheith ar an bhfoireann. Ach is dócha go bhfuil, Mac Muiris tréis dian smaoineamh a dhéanamh agus é ag fí foireannn le chéile i dtreó, tá súíl againn, go mbeidh sé deacair an bhearna a bhaint dóibh. Féach ar cé a bhuaidh ar cé hé agus is deacair a thómhas i ndáirire conas mar a bheidh sa tsraithchomórtas. Buadh ar Mhuineacháin go bog ach bhí beirt don bhfoireann curtha don ngort. Is deacair an ceann san a réiteach mar nuair a bhíonn duine déarfa go mbeidh an bhua ag Corcaígh teipeann ortha agus uaireanta eile cuireann siad iontas fiú ortha féin. An mbuafaidh Ciarraí an tSraith Chomórtas? Déarfainn go ndéanfaidh. Is mó duine a dhein pinginí an lá cheanna nuair a bhíodar 4 in agaidh 1. Fágaimís mar sin é mar scéal. Exciting Gigs in Goat Street McCarthy’s of Dingle will play host to some great gigs in the coming weeks. On Friday March 6th Ed Romanoff and Clive Barnes will play solo and accompany each other in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of music with two of the scenes finest roots and blues practitioners. The duo will be joined on stage by virtuoso Texan cellist Seth Parker Woods. The following Friday (13th) electro - rock trio Toy Soldier make a return to the Goat Street venue to showcase their dance-floor grooves and hard rocking riffs. The legendary Scullion will play a pair of eagerly awaited gigs on the 18th and 19th March. More than three decades on from their formative gigs together the band’s signature sound is as strong as ever with the harmonious voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson. Over the years Scullion have remained loyal to the band’s original vision and it’s recasting of folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues color.

Rent A Room Relief

cannot be more than the relevant limit for the 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 year in question. This includes sums that the tenant pays to you for food, utilities, laundry or similar goods and services. When you are working out whether the gross income is more than the limit, you cannot deduct any costs you incurred in earning that income. If your income from rent and other services is over the limit, the profits from the entire income (not just the amount over the limit) are taxable. If you qualify for rent-a-room relief, the income

Question - I heard that I can get a tax exemption if I rent out a room in my home. How does this work? Answer - If you rent out a room or rooms in your home as residential accommodation, the income you earn is exempt from tax, provided the total paid by the tenant(s) is not more than €12,000 in a tax year (this was €10,000 from 2008 to 2014) and you satisfy the qualifying conditions for the relief (for example, the relief does not apply to rent payable by your child). This is called renta-room relief. It applies to a room or rooms in your home – which can include a self-contained unit such as a basement flat or a converted garage. The relief does not apply to rooms that are not attached to your home.

is not liable to PRSI, the Universal Social Charge or income tax. Claiming rent-a-room relief does not affect your mortgage interest relief or your exemption from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) if you sell your home. You do not have to claim rent-aroom relief as it applies automatically. However, if you are submitting an annual tax return you must record the amount of the exempt income on the return. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below and from revenue.ie.

You must live in your home as your sole or main residence during the tax year for which you are claiming the relief. You do not have to own the property – you could be a tenant and be sub-letting to someone else. (In such cases, you would have to check with your own landlord that sub-letting is allowed.) Your tenant(s) must be using the room as residential accommodation. For example, you can claim relief if you are renting a room to a student for the academic year, but not if you are taking in shortterm guests. Renting a room in your home is not covered by landlord and tenant legislation so you do not have to register as a landlord with the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB), provide a rent book to the tenant or ensure that the accommodation meets any minimum physical standards. The gross income you receive

Scéal Foilsitheora le

Jane Casey

Cian Ó hÉigeartaigh agus Aoileann Nic Gearailt foilsithe ag

Cló Iar-Chonnacht ‘Céard a tharla nuair a tugadh leabhar le hEarnán de Blaghd mar bhronntanas do Mháirtín Ó Cadhain? Nuair a chuaigh Breandán Ó Beacháin go hÁrainn chun a chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú? Nuair a tairgeadh beathaisnéis Sheáin Sabhat do roghnóirí an Chlub Leabhar? Nuair a bhunaigh Seán agus Brighid Ó hÉigeartaigh a gcomhlacht foilsithe, Sáirséal agus Dill, bhí fúthu ardchaighdeán a bhaint amach idir ábhar agus dearadh na leabhar, iad a dhíol go héifeachtach, agus gan aon chinsireacht a chleachtadh. Laistigh de bheagán blianta bhí liosta údar acu ba dheacair a shárú: Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Máirtín Ó Direáin, Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Liam Ó Flaithearta agus mórán eile. Ní gan dua agus costas a cuireadh sin i gcrích. Ba ghearr gur ídíodh bunchaipitil an chomhlachta, agus ba mhinic i mbaol a theipthe é - go háirithe nuair a cailleadh Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh go tobann, in aois a chaoga bliain, agus é ag obair ar phrofaí go déanach san oíche. Caitheann an leabhar seo géarsholas ar scríbhneoirí agus ar litríocht na Gaeilge, ar chúrsaí tráchtála agus tionsclaíochta, ar ghnéithe den státseirbhís, ar pholaitíocht na Gaeilge, agus ar pholaitíocht na hÉireann. Bronnadh an chéad duais ar an saothar seo sa chomórtas do shaothar próis i gComórtais Liteartha an Oireachtais 2014.’ Cló Iar-Chonnacht - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis
