Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday March 24th is “Wild” . Based on

Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail the film stars Reese Witherspoon Strayed and is a chronicle of her1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe. The journey is meant to be an escape from her personal problems and possibly rehabilitating herself from a troubling past but also deals with the potential danger in the hike. A film about self dicovery “Wild” is happy to leave as many questions as answers with the viewer. The following week on Tuesday 31st the critically acclaimed drama “Whiplash” will be shown at the Dykegate Lane venue. Featuring on many critics “Best Of --” lists of 2014 “Whiplash” tells the story of Andrew Neyman, an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite east coast music conservatory. Part psychological thriller - partmusical drama, Neyman’s dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential with the increasingly toxic chemistry between the two ratcheting up the pressure. 4 West Kerry Live

An Pobalscoil - A Beacon Of Sporting Excellence Tadhg Evans Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne opened its doors in the autumn of 2007. An amalgamation of Dingle’s Meánscoil na mBráithre and Meánscoil na Toirbhirte, it would have been fair to expect that the school would experience its fair share of sporting glory. Both of the town’s secondary schools carried with them a proud sporting pedigree that would surely translate into further success upon their amalgamation. However, nobody could have predicted the sheer intensity of their achievements in such a short space of time. When discussing the country’s most successful sporting schools, no conversation could hold any merit without mention of the Pobalscoil. To think it has forged such a reputation in just eight years is staggering. The school is quite simply a towering example of sporting excellence, and one that the peninsula and the county should be very proud of.

over the last few years. The under-14 boys successfully defended their Munster title this year, and will be competing in the All-Ireland championship at the end of the month. It’s worth remembering that the school only has an average of about four hundred pupils passing through its doors each year. To put that into context, the number of students attending St. Patricks College, Maghera, who were defeated by the Pobalscoil in last year’s Hogan Cup showpiece, is about three times higher than that. If the triumphs they have achieved in basketball came along on their own, it would have been considered a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, a storied period of success to commemorate for years to come. The same could have been said for the school’s football achievements, but to be so incredibly strong in both games within the school’s first decade is scarcely believable. The school, the peninsula and the county should be immensely proud. The performances in this year’s Corn Uí Mhuirí finals, particularly in the drawn game, were far from perfect, and you would think that considerable improvements will need to be made if they are to regain the Hogan Cup. But for a school so accustomed to success, who is to say that the necessary improvements will not be achieved?

Both basketball and gaelic football would easily rank as two of the most competitive sports on the post-primary scene. In less than a decade of existence, the Pobalscoil has reached the summit of both games. Its successes have been plentiful at county, provincial and national level, to the extent that its list of honours would leave the uninitiated bewildered. It’s very easy to forget some of these titles, even at national level, and that is illustrative of just how successful the West Kerry school has been. Many schools that have been in existence for decades would gladly swap their trophy cabinets with the West Kerry outfit. In its first year, the school tasted national success when its under-16 girls claimed the All-Ireland Schools Cup ‘B’ Championship with a four point win over St. Patricks Academy, Dungannon. It would be the first chapter in an extraordinary period of success for the school’s basketballers. The title would be regained two years later along with a ‘B’ league success at the same age level, while the senior girls capped a remarkable year for the school’s basketball teams by repeating that double at under-19 level. It seemed that such an astonishing achievement could not be bettered, but upon making the step up to competition at A-level for 2010/11, the school would only continue to flourish. Given little chance of success in the higher grade, the Pobalscoil would go on to claim one of the blue riband events of the post-primary sporting landscape, an All-Ireland league title. It was the crowning glory of a period of remarkable achievement. The school’s footballing accomplishments over the last few years have been equally astonishing. In 2012, the girl’s under-16 team were crowned Munster champions, while the school’s boy’s teams claimed a superb clean sweep of county and provincial post-primary titles. Only the national championship, the Hogan Cup, eluded them that year, but that gap in the trophy cabinet has since been rectified. Last weekend, the Pobalscoil won their fourth consecutive Munster ‘A’ Football Championship. It was the first time in over 80 years that a school had accumulated four ‘Corn Uí Mhuirí’ titles on the spin. Seamus Ó Muircheartaigh, Tomás Ó Súilleabháin and Cathal Ó Bambaire have been part of all four teams. This spring, the school will be hoping to retain the blue riband event of post-primary football, the Hogan Cup, a title that they won so impressively last year. Seven of their players formed the backbone of the county’s first Minor championship in 20 years last September. Many of those stars will harbour serious ambitions of joining Mikey and Paul Geaney as former pupils of the Pobalscoil to win All-Ireland titles in the senior equivalent for the county. As if those achievements weren’t enough to whet the school’s insatiable sporting appetite, their boys and girls have achieved considerable success at county and provincial level in the game of badminton 10 West Kerry Live

Strength Training for Women; Why It’s So Important! WK Fitness Let’s face it ladies, we are fed so much information through what health and fitness is meant to be. Everybody knows what they are meant to be or should be doing. Yet nobody is doing it. According to most women’s fitness magazines and some coaches, women are best suited to cardio machines and stretching. The image of women’s fitness is remaining weak & frail. Look into any Women’s Fitness or Health magazine and you will find the latest celeb workout and a picture of a model posing for the picture. This isn’t realistic or its not 100% real world is it? No. The National Centre for Health Statistics have shown us that just completing 2 weights session per week can decrease body fat levels by up to 3% in just 10 weeks! Strength Training doesn’t have to be scary! We have some girls at WK Fitness who can now lift more weights than guys, and that are now much stronger than some guys! And they are proud of it! The result? They look the best they ever have in their whole life. The types of workouts you are doing are not the type of workout that you need. They won’t help you get toned, lose body fat or lose that extra bit of weight. In order for women to achieve maximum health and their desired body composition they need to strength train. The first thing a woman says when strength training is recommended “I don’t want to get big & bulky like a man”. You can’t. Firstly women have a totally different hormonal profile to men and women don’t produce testosterone. Secondly, strength training will help you build lean muscle and drop body fat. We have seen it time and time again. Yet there is no ideal or best training programme out there for anyone. There are some factors that come into play for example, age, weight, current training experience, range of movement & mobility. Every programme can be individualised for any particular person. If you can’t do an exercise, switch and do an alternative don’t just give up! We recommend that women complete 1 or 2 strength session per week. And when we say strength sessions we mean completing exercises such as squats, deadlifts, overhead press etc. There is the exception for someone return from an injury, they must start with light weights and slowly build back up!

10:00 am spin cycle

stretch & mobility

Strength Training helps to preserve precious lean muscle! As muscle mass diminishes with age that effect can be counteracted with strength training! Now were not asking you to turn into a gym bunny altogether. Just 1, 2 or even better 3 strength sessions per week can help with this problem. As you grow older your muscle mass drops and your body fat levels rise and strength training can stop this process regardless of your age! Regular strength training can also help you drop body fat and burn calories more efficiently resulting in healthy weight loss. Reduced risk of Osteoporosis. As women grow older their bone density drops naturally, putting them at risk of developing osteoporosis later on in life. Regularly lifting weights can stop this degenerating process and can help the bones remain strong and healthy. So as we can see ladies your focus needs to shift from constant slogging on the cardio machines day in and day out and just adopt a more effective training technique! Slowly add some strength training to your week and see your body transform! You won’t get big and bulky, but you will put on nice lean & toned muscle, look really good and feel confident in yourself! If you need any help, ideas or have any questions on how to look your best and to fill yourself with confidence please don’t hesitate to contact us on 066-9150606 or on Facebook!

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Monday, March 18.

Public holiday today and another wet and miserable one. Celcus Sheehy has been installing a back boiler in the sitting room. Today he arrived with a copper canopy for the fireplace which he made from an old immersion tank, very generous of him.

By Ted Creedon

Tuesday, March 19.

Monday, March 11, 1985. Light frost this morning but cloudless skies all day. Soviet Premier Chernenko has passed away and was replaced within three hours by Mikhail Gorbachev, 54. Perhaps we’ll see the dawning of a new era in relationships between the Soviets and the West. Went to the Presbytery at 9pm for a youth club meeting with Fr Godley, Brendan Greaney and Carmel Costello who is a development officer with the Diocesan Youth Service.

A new fire station is being built behind the houses on Ashemount Terrace and Michael Devane of Annascaul is the contractor. The Council is also doing some work on the courthouse; new roof, new floors and ceilings and it should be finished by the year’s end.

Wednesday, March 20.

Heard a strange noise while were were having our evening meal. It turned out to be a fire in the chimney. All hands to the pumps! Grabbed a ladder and a jug of water and clambered onto the roof and up to the chimney. There was a deep red glow inside the chimney so poured the water down slowly until the glow disappeared. There was smoke everywhere in the house and a fine crack running up the face of the chimney breast.

What a day! Winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightening from 9.30am to 11.30am. Went to meet Prof. Peter Woodman of UCC at Dún an Óir hotel but met him at the junction of the Baile Aglaishe road and the Farren road. We had to leave our cars there because there was a great flood of water from the bridge to the Ballincolla road. We met with Pádraig Feiritéar whose brother, Muiris, is building a new house overlooking Ferriter’s Cove. He will rent the house to the UCC excavation team for a month in the summer. We went to the excavation site at the cove and met a group of geological students from UCC who were searching for fossils. Pádraig then brought us to his house for coffee, cake and buiscuits.

Wednesday, March 13.

Friday, March 22.

Tuesday, March 12.

Watched some of the Chernenko funeral on TV. Most images were of stern faced geriatrics in furry hats. Few images of the visiting dignitaries except for Maggie Thatcher and Yasser Arafat. Fr. Jackie called to the house looking for info on the Holy Stone. He’s bringing out a new version of his book on Dingle with updated information.

Thursday, March 14. Got a copy of the Archaeological Survey report on the Holy Stone from the survey. Director Judy Cuppage and dropped it in to Fr. Jackie.

Friday, March 15. The mountains are white today and the weather is very cold with showers of hail. There has been an outbreak of attacks on elderly people these past few months, especially in western counties - Galway and Mayo. The people are robbed by gangs, beaten up and even had their homes set on fire. There’s a great public outcry over this and the gardaí are under pressure to protect people. Another anti-social development, the product of the current depression, is car theft and the ramming of police cars on a nightly basis in Dublin now. Some 500 people have been arrested over car thefts since Christmas and the Government has decided to re-open the old prison on Spike Island, in Cork harbour, for the ‘safe keeping’ of these offenders.

Went to Seán Moran’s social in the Hillgrove Hotel tonight. The hotel had put a limit of 240 people on the event and some 228 tickets had been sold. Seán met us at the door and bought us a drink. In fact, there was a free bar until £300 worth of booze had been consumed and that didn’t take long!

Sunday, March 24.

Went back to Dingle pier after lunch. Pádraig Quinn was there already with the Doonsheane canoe. The other half of the crew failed to turn up so we carried the canoe down the slipway and set her down on the oars before letting her into the water. I took my usual number 2 seat and Pádraig took number 3. We pulled over to the Burnham shore and had a short rest. Then west to Clooshmore and back to the pier. It took us 45 minutes - not bad for two.

Gilmore’s Groin Eddie O’ Grady Gilmores groin is common in sports such as soccer, hurling, football, rugby etc. games which place considerable strain on the groin due to the running, turning, twisting and kicking involved. It is a condition that was not fully understood until relatively recently, many cases being misdiagnosed as a groin strain or inguinal hernia. This injury occurs at the junction between the leg and the torso. It involves the area (called an aponeurosis) where the abdominal muscles (Internal obliques, External obliques and Transversus abdominus) converge to form the inguinal ligament. The external oblique muscle has an archway through which several nerves and vessels pass. In Gilmores groin, a tear in the external oblique muscle causes this archway to open up much wider. Further tears in the obliques cause them to lift up and away from the inguinal ligament, leaving the transversus abdominus muscle unsupported. Patients with Gilmore’s groin have one-sided, persistent groin pain that is increased by running, sprinting, twisting and turning. Coughing and sneezing may also cause an increase in the groin pain. Male athletes are more commonly affected by the condition than females. Typically, patients experience pain and stiffness in the evening after a sporting event and during the following morning. In two thirds of cases, the pain of Gilmore’s groin develops gradually , while a third of patients notice it beginning suddenly after a specific event i.e. ball kick out, twisting while running etc. Gilmore’s groin can often be diagnosed during a physical examination by a trained professional, but Mri etc. would be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Usually, a structure known as the superficial inguinal ring is dilated. The superficial inguinal ring is an opening in the external oblique muscle in the lower abdomen, and the doctor is able to feel this opening through the skin. It enlarges when tears develop in both the external oblique muscle and the tissue band to which it joins, known as the conjoint tendon. Surgery is really the only long term effective treatment. Following surgery a 4 to 6 week intensive rehabilitation period is usually required before returning to play. The rehabilitation program will be aimed at gradually improving the strength and flexibility of the pelvic muscles in order to allow full recovery and return to play.

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Lee Strand West Kerry Senior League Semi Finals The Lee Strand West Kerry League Semi-finals were played on Sunday March 15th and it was An Ghaeltacht and Lispole that emerged triumphant, with wins over Castlegregory and Dingle respectively to secure their places in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015. •Castlegregory 0-15 to An Ghaeltacht 3-8, Sunday 15th March in Castlegregory @ 11.30am •Dingle 2-12 to 4-8 Lispole, Sunday 15th March in Páirc an Ághasaigh @ 1.45pm Dingle 2-12 to 4-8 Lispole This Lee Strand West Kerry League Semi-final was played in excellent conditions in Páirc an Ághasaigh, and it was the home side Dingle that got off to the better start. Dingle led by four points after 5 minutes, with Daniel Ryan with three and Joe Sheehy with one. With the Lispole half backs and in particular centre back Donnacha Higgins starting to get to grips with the game it wasn’t long before Lispole got off the mark when Tom Kavanagh kicked a fine point after good work by Declan O’Sullivan, and Declan added a point from play himself shortly after. Two well taken free kicks from the boot of Garrett Noonan made it all square after 15 minutes of play, Dingle 0-4 to Lispole 0-4. Daniel Ryan put Dingle a point up, and the same player was awarded a penalty shortly after. Joe Sheehy gave Lispole keeper Conor Hannifin no chance with the resulting spot kick and Dingle’s lead was extended to four points. This was to be short lived as Lispole were awarded a penalty when Tom Kavanagh was fouled and Declan O’Sullivan made no mistake when he calmly slotted home past Dingle keep David O’Connor. Paul Devane replied with a point from play for Dingle but the last action of the first half was reserved for Lispole’s Declan O’Sullivan who scored a fine goal after great work. Half time score, Dingle 1-6 to Lispole 2-5. Joe Sheehy for Dingle made it a one point game shortly after the restart and Ciaran O’Sullivan restored Lispole’s lead with a

well kicked free from the ground. Dingle responded with a pointed free from Daniel Ryan before Lispole’s Declan O’Sullivan was awarded another penalty which he duly converted himself. Garrett Noonan extended Lispole’s lead with a pointed free and Daniel Ryan responded for Dingle with a pointed free. With 15 minutes gone in the second half the score was Dingle 1-9 to Lispole 3-7. A long ball from Garrett Noonan to Brian Rayle who beat his man and slotted home Lispole’s fourth goal looked to have sealed the matter for Lispole but Dingle rallied for the last 10 minutes of the game. Dan Ryan with a point from play and Paidi Murphy who scored a good goal for Dingle narrowed the gap to a goal. Lispole weathered the storm and after good defensive work Garrett Noonan kicked a pointed free to put them four up again. Joe Sheehy and John O’Connor with two pointed frees for Dingle meant that Lispole had to defend for the closing minutes of the game and this they did very well to secure their place in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2015. When referee Brendan Twiss blew the final whistle the scoreboard read Dingle 2-12 to Lispole 4-8. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making our trip to Kenya possible. In the two weeks we spent in the rescue centre we managed to paint the mural on the wall in the picture shown above, shelves were put up in the centres’ office and dormitory, electrical work was completed, a library was built for a local Massai school, we cemented the paths around the centre to make it less dangerous for the children, the kitchen was upgraded and a huge amount of work went into creating a garden for the kids to play in. We helped some of the local families with their living conditions, a borehole was dug and water was found which was a huge development for the centre. A few of us went to a school nearby and taught an Arts & Crafts lesson and activities were done with the kids in the centre every evening. - Niamh Ní Laoithe, Tara Nic Gearailt, Bobbi Nic Eoin, Faolan Dáibhis, Kate Ní Laoithe & Lúcás Mac Giolla Earnáin. 18 West Kerry Live

GLAS APPLICATION UPDATE: GLAS applications are being made despite what appears to be, every effort to make applications difficult. What should be a simple process is being made more difficult, by DAFF staff not being prepared for questions posed or posted to them regarding same. All applications must be done on-line, but the on-line system is not yet fit for purpose or fully up-:and-running. Mapping of plots chosen for particular measures or options can not always be done, because the mapping system will crash when clicked in many cases. Advisors bear the brunt of this debacle, as it is they who must deal with their clients, ensuring that all will get in, and also deal with the DAFM staff, who appear to be unsure as to exactly what is going on. This is not a fair situation to put farmers, advisors or improperly briefed front-line DAFM staff in. Farmers should not fear, as it is the Department’s obligation to provide “fit-for-purpose” services and scheme to the public. Now is the time for them and the farm lobby to stand up and demand an extension to the deadline for GLAS and all other schemes. Farmers and advisors have been waiting for this scheme for months. Some farmers have been out of REPS 3 since 2013, and are two years without a payment. It is now time for Minister Coveney to sort out this mess. He spoke about new schemes and innovations many times, including in Dingle, at a Food Festival discussion. He is now overseeing a scheme that just simply doesn’t work properly. He must act, or be willing to take the heat, next time he faces the electorate. People can’t be made wait for years, for a pig-in-a-poke. This scheme simply must be fixed. This can be a good scheme, and will be made so, by the commitment of all to carry out what is asked of you, and through the perseverance of your advisor. They are the ones pulled every which way but loose. Can you imagine if a section of the HSE, or The County Council or Revenue, or whoever were issued with a new computer system, without an introductory period or any formal training. In fact without any training at all. This is what has happened, and that advisors, as a profession are trying to deal with. Time to get off the pot, Minister, and man-up. For years you have told us how much you are one of the people. Show us, now! GLAS OPTIONS: Many farmers joining GLAS feel that they will earn “handy money” from GLAS. This is not the case; there is no longer anything such as a free-lunch. To achieve proper payments in GLAS, you must earn it. Those with commonage will receive a payment of €120 per annum for every hectare submitted while those owning natura SAC or SPA land will receive a lower rate of €79. But this is earned, as there is little else they can do with this land, being restricted by national and EU law from cultivating or managing these lands in what would be known as a commercial fashion. These will be Tier 1 Applicants , given priority access, and all but guaranteed entry into the scheme. Those without any of these lands are in a more precarious position. They will most likely be in a Tier 3 situation who cant be guaranteed entry, and need to do something to improve their chances of gaining access to the scheme. To achieve this they will need to opt for something such as Wild Bird Cover, which will put them into Tier 2, elevating their chances. To do so, they must choose a 1 ha site to grow a mixture of oats and linseed, mustard or rapeseed, to create a bird’s habitat. Payment of €900 per ha will be made on this plot, and the maximum area that may be selected is 3 ha. Picking this option would ensure that you get closer to the €5,000 maximum payment. You need only pick options to get you the other €4,100. To achieve this, you are going to have to seriously consider Low Input Permanent Pasture. This has a payment rate of €314 per ha. Ten ha will get you to €3,140, which along with your wild bird cover will have you at €4,040. Pick a selection of bird box, bat box, bee habitat and orchard options and you will be at €4,650. Plant some hedge, (70m) at €5 per meter and you have the maximum payment. But, you must be serious, and consider Wild Bird Cover, or some other Priority Option, or you may be in danger of not getting in. Many will object to the WBC option, but they will be hard-pressed to make a similar return from any farm enterprise, except dairying. The Choice is yours, but let your advisor guide you and explain all options to you. If you have stone wall, on your farm, maintenance of this will pay up to €2,800 for up to 4,000m, or 70c per m. But to choose this option, you must commit to all of keep this wall in a good stock-proof intact condition for the next five years. Your advisor will be able to discuss all these options with you. But remember; don’t just pick the easy one. Or don’t pick ones, just because your neighbour picks them, pick options that will suit you. Choosing your advisor is not always easy. There are the old reliable, the 20 West Kerry Live

ones we thing are a safe bet and the ones with the glossy advertisements. Choose wisely. And choose someone who will be around next week and next month and next year, when you need them. There was a term used recently, on radio, “yellow-pack” advisors”. Well the 14th March has just passed, but “Beware the Ides of March”, there are a number of suitably qualified professionals on the peninsula, who can deal with the rush, so look to them, first. By all means, look where you wish, but when choosing who will be responsible for your GLAS payment for the next five or six years, just ask your self, “where will they be, I’ll be here, and it’s here that I need my advisor”. County Allocations for LEADER Element of Rural Development Programme The County allocations for the LEADER elements of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) have been announced. Co Kerry is to receive approximately €10.2 in funding out of as total budget of €250 million. LEADER projects provide vital funds to rural communities throughout the country and have helped create and sustain jobs in areas that have potential local projects that need support to get up and running. There are many success stories attributed to LEADER projects and I am delighted this funding will allow for further projects to benefit. Following on from the recent opening of the new €1.4bn Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS), the County allocations for LEADER funding mark another important milestone in the implementation of the new Rural Development Programme (RDP), 2014-2020. The schemes and supports in the new RDP will be a vital support in enhancing the economic sustainability of rural Ireland and the Agri-Food sector. As announced in Budget 2015, an overall €250 million will be allocated towards the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme. Today’s announcement will allocate €220 million overall to individual sub-regional (county) areas for the purposes of the implementation of the LEADER elements of the Rural Development Programme by Local Action Groups within those areas. An additional €15million will be allocated to two AgriFood measures and a further €10 million will be used to support cooperation projects over the lifetime of the programme with a particular emphasis on cross-border initiative. Capital Gains Tax Relief for Farm Restructuring The Depasrtmsant of Finance has published updated guidelines for Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Relief for ‘Farm Restructuring’. Farms in Ireland tend to be fragmented with the average holding made up of 3.8 separate parcels. CGT Relief for Farm Restructuring was introduced in Budget 2013 to facilitate sales, purchases and swaps of land parcels to ensure more efficient farm structures. However, whole-farm replacement was at that time precluded from this relief. The Agri-Taxation Review, published as part of Budget 2015, recommended that CGT Relief for Farm Restructuring be extended to include whole-farm replacement. Minister Noonan announced this measure in Budget 2015, as part of a comprehensive package of measures and these updated Guidelines now give effect to this decision. This measure is important for farmers with fragmented farm holdings who are seeking to improve efficiency and viability. The introduction of such new measures will help address existing structural challenges and enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of our farms. As well as the addition of whole-farm replacement as eligible for CGT Relief, the measure is also being extended by a year to 31st December 2016. The Relief is only available to claimants who, on meeting certain conditions, are issued with a ‘Farm Restructuring Certificate’ by Teagasc. Detailed guidelines on the operation of this relief are available at – Capital Gains Tax relief guidelines relating to applications for farm restructuring certificates. Information Meetings for Farmers on the Implementation of CAP Reform Further details have emerged in relation to the series of 14 regional Information Meetings on CAP reform implementation that the Department are holding during March. This is an important opportunity for farmers to inform themselves on how the key elements of the new CAP reform arrangements will operate. Farmers will have an opportunity to obtain information and advice in relation to the new Basic Payment Scheme, National Reserve, Greening and the new GLAS agri-environmental scheme. Again, we must ask, why these meetings are not taking place earlier. The purpose of these meetings is to provide information to farmers on future requirements in relation to the Basic Payment Scheme under Pillar I and the GLAS scheme under Pillar II of the CAP. Details in relation to the first five meetings were announced last week. The three most relevant meetings will take place as follows: 20/03/2015 - Limerick, South Court Hotel, Raheen Roundabout, Raheen, 23/03/2015

Flowers are #ff0000 and #00ff00 leaves are #00ff00 * Joan Maguire In a computer system colours are represented by a hexadecimal code that ranges from #000000 to #ffffff, which is equivalent to a decimal code that ranges from 00,00,00 to 255,255,255, The colours as interpreted by a computer are displayed on a screen as a combination of the three colours Red Green and Blue. Where #ff0000 is red,#00ff00 is green and #0000ff is blue. The system is known as RGB The digital computer, a binary machine cannot see or understand colours. Scanning equipment and digital cameras include computer programmes which do the conversion. A scanner or digital camera takes the colours in a photograph or other image and converts each pixel in the photograph to a hexadecimal value. The values range from #0000000 to #ffffff. The colours of the rainbow may be represented as follows:

During the St. Patricks day celebrations the #0000ff code was used widely around the world as buildings were lit with digitally coded green lights. All digital controlled lights use the RGB coding system to represent colours. Different shades are achieved by the traditional method of mixing a bit of the other colours to achieve a different tone

This forty shades of green goes from an equal distribution of the three colours, on the left to green only on the far right. There was a song by Henry Chapin which described how a young man resisted the attempt to limit his vision to the required standard, which could be written like this. There are over 16 million combinations of colour available in the RGB system, a small subset of what is available in nature but enough to represent things in a way that we would hardly recognise the difference. * With Apologies To Harry Chapin Joan Maguire runs Compucara on Dykegate Lane, Dingle , where she provides courses on computers for individuals and groups as well as a service answering questions about technology. 066 91 52222 / joan@compucara.ie

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Cleaver; Galium aparine Parts Used; aerial parts Family; Rubicaceae

Deirdre Daly

We can at last begin to look forward to foraging as the first of the spring plants start to appear. The cleaver has been quietly growing for some time now and if you look closely you can see the herb beginning to form dense mats of rosette type leaves approximately 2 to 3 inches high. Cleaver grows abundantly in our hedgerows and as the season progresses the plant climbs to meet the light by sticking to any adjacent shrubs or objects with its tiny hooked bristles. Now is the time to pick

Dingle Folk Club The next gathering of the Dingle Folk Club will be on Thursday 26th March. This month sees a return to Dingle with the gathering taking place in McCarthy's Bar, Goat Street at 9.00pm. As always all singers, songwriters, musicians and listeners are welcome.

the young leaves for salads before the plant becomes tough, while teas and juices can be made up until the plant flowers in the summer foraging the herb as needed. Cleaver is best picked and used fresh as the plant can lose some of its effectiveness when dried. The plant enjoys a number of names such as robin-run- the- hedge and goosegrass to name but a few. The former name must refer to the straggling nature of the herb as it clings and spreads where it grows along the hedges. The name goosegrass refers to the fact that geese are fond of the herb and the plant was used to fatten poultry at one time. Other animals, such as, horses, cows and sheep will also eat cleaver and no doubt the herbs capacity to act as a spring cleanse works equally well for them as it does for us. Medicinally cleaver is an excellent tonic particularly after a long winter helping to clear the system, which may have become stagnant and inefficient after a long winter. Juicing this herb along with, for example, young nettles is a superb way of clearing and revitalising the system in preparation for the longer brighter days when we are all more active and hopefully at this time of the year full of the joys of spring! Cleaver is a cooling herb and can be effective in reducing heat and irritation in the urinary system, alleviating conditions such as cystitis and irritable bladder. Skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis will all benefit from this herb as will swollen glands, adenoid trouble and lymph disorders in general

as the herb supports the body to rid itself of toxins. In terms of the concept of the ‘doctrine of signatures’ where certain characteristics of a plant point to their beneficial qualities, in this case the plant’s tenacious sticky nature, cleaver is sometimes compared to the workings of a pipe cleaner or bristle brush clearing and cleansing the system. This is just what we need as the days get longer and the summer approaches. Cleavers cooling and healing properties make this herb useful externally to soothe hot inflamed conditions, such as burns, nettle rash, blisters, skin inflammations and wounds. Simply pick a handful of the leaves, crush in a mortar and pestle and apply to the affected area. Preparation and dosage: Cleaver can be juiced, taken as a tea infusion and in tincture form. Two teaspoons of the fresh juice is adequate daily, and 4 to 8 mls of the tincture can be taken three times a day. Safety considerations; No known safety considerations Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Now is the time to Spring into action for Hayfever! Irene Ní Fhlannúra The Spring or Vernal equinox marks the true beginning of Spring. This is the time of year when both night and day are of equal lengths. Long before religious and meteorological calendars, people relied on the movement of the Sun around the Earth to mark the Seasons. It is at this time of year that Spring truly gets underway signaled with the onset of new birth and growth in Nature. For those that suffer with Hayfever, it can also mark the beginning of a long, stressful period of discomfort and irritation from now and into the Summer. Hayfever affects thousands of people every year with most sufferers (95%) reacting to grass pollens from mid-May to July. However, there are a few that also react to the tree pollens which are at their highest during Spring. Hay fever (also known as allergic rhinitis) is caused by the pollen of specific seasonal plants, airborne chemicals and dust particles. Symptoms include sneezing, red, watery and itchy eyes, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat and wheezing. The current mainstream approach attempts to control the symptoms with antihistamines, steroids, immune-suppressants and decongestants. While these may offer temporary relief for the sufferer, they also have side effects and never address the root cause. These drugs are effective because they dampen down the immune response by suppressing the body’s natural defence mechanisms which include histamine release, mucous production and inflammation. However, this is the same defence mechanism the body uses to protect us from harmful bacteria, viruses and pathogens. The long term use of these type of drugs undermines our immune system and may lead to lowered protection from harmful threats, increased risk of autoimmune disease and an increased vulnerability to developing other allergies. There are multiple factors involved in the manifestation of allergies and associated respiratory and immune disorders. Nutrition, environment and genetics all play a role. While the experts figure things out, sufferers can be proactive this year and lessen their symptoms while supporting the immune system through diet and nutrition. More than two-thirds of the active immune cells in our body are situated in the intestines so it is wise to look after your gut and your gut will look after you! This involves clearing out the junk from your diet and adopting a healthier, cleaner diet of real, whole food. It calls for firm decisions being made in the kitchen and at meal times to remove foods that are useless, harmful or irritating to our health. A menu of mostly plants, preferably fresh, in season and chemical free is the single most important dietary step you can make to reduce allergy symptoms. As we enter Spring and move towards Summer, 26 West Kerry Live

our diet needs to shift away from the hearty Winter fare of starches and grains and reflect the new and upward growth of plants such as Spring greens, leaves and stalks. Increase pungent foods like green onions, garlic, ginger, watercress, mustard greens, turmeric, basil, cardamom, marjoram, cumin and fennel in your diet. These herbs and spices are particularly helpful to ease the transition into Spring and have potent immune boosting qualities. Shorten cooking times of meats and fish and take note that young Spring greens require very simple preparation and minimal cooking to get the most from their nutrition and flavour.

The fat in your diet has an enormous influence on the immune response and inflammatory conditions. Dietary fats are used as an energy source but also in cell membranes, to make hormones and prostaglandins and are fundamental to the way cells communicate with each other in all aspects of our functioning. Many processed foods use fats that have been heated or treated in a way that, when digested, become a cause or contributing factor to inflammation. For hayfever, and other inflammatory disorders, use only coconut oil, avocado oil or olive oil in cooking. Increase omega-3 oils in the diet through oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds. Omega 3 is not heat-stable so oily fish is best eaten raw, marinated or lightly steam-baked in foil or parchment paper. Seed oils such as sunflower and rapeseed (omega 6) are not suitable for cooking either, despite what the man on the telly tells you! The consumption of trans-fats, hydrogenated fats or heated/ treated polyunsaturated fats outweigh the healthier monounsaturated fats and omega 3 in the modern diet, always tipping the balance towards inflammation. Supplementing your diet with probiotics is the most effective way of getting beneficial bacteria into the heart of your immune system – the gut. Not only do these little critters guard our intestines and build our defences but now studies have shown that our gut flora have a direct influence on the integrity of the cells lining the respiratory tract. For hayfever, choose

National Pilgrim Paths Day A guided walk of Cosán na Naomh / The Saints’ Path in West Kerry will take place on Saturday 4th April, starting at Ventry Beach car park at 10.30am. This walk is part of the second annual National Pilgrim Paths Day, a day which celebrates a network of over a dozen recognised pilgrim paths throughout Ireland at Easter time. Over 1,800 people throughout the country participated in organised pilgrim walks during the inaugural National Pilgrim Paths Day in 2014 with over 150 participating in West Kerry. This year, Coiste Chosán na Naomh Chairman TP Ó Conchúir is expecting an even larger group: “Cosán na Naomh is roughly 17km in distance and winds through ancient fields and fuchsia rich lanes from the pilgrims landing place at Ventry Beach to Mount Brandon – it is definitely one of the hidden treasures of West Kerry”, says TP.

Open 5Pm To 10Pm !

Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Isabel Bennett, archaeologist with Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne will give an account of some of the more important Christian sites along the holy path including Teampall na Cluanach, Gallarus Oratory, and Kilmalkedar. A detailed map of Cosán na Naomh is available from Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne while a bilingual app with video presentations from local historian Tomás Ó Lúing and TG4 presenter Sláine Ní Chathalláin is available at www.everytrail.com/guide/cosanna-naomh. This app was developed by the local television production and training group, ScrogallTV. The Path is at a relatively low level but there are some challenging underfoot conditions and steep ascents and descents, so walkers need to be well equipped and shod. Walkers can chose to walk the full Path or may wish to walk a section. Reasonably fit and well equipped walkers will have an unmatched opportunity to complete the full pilgrim journey to Mount Brandon on Easter Sunday. There is no charge for the guided walk; however, walkers must make their own transport arrangements.

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Tá caidreamh dlúth idir an Díseart agus Ollscoil na hÉireann Má Nuad. Sampla maith ar an dtoradh atá ar sin is ea Léachtaí Cholm Cille a bhfoilsítear imleabhar díobh gach bliain, agus i mbliana imleabhar XLV. Bíonn téama ar leith gach bliain. Sna blianta tosaigh ba ar Aointe an charghais a bhíodh na léachtaí ach tuigeadh dúinn gurbh fhearr iad go léir a thabhairt ar dheireadh seachtaine mar go raibh an lucht éiste ag teacht chugainn ó cheithre arda Éireann. Bhí Léachtaí 2014 sa Díseart go heisceachtúil. Bhain na Léachtaí sin le saothar fairsing ilghnéitheach an Athar Peadar Ó Laoire. Bhí cúis ar leith leis sin mar go bhfuair Ollscoil na hÉireann Má Nuad go gairid roimhe sin cartlann lámhscríbhinní an Athar Peadar ar iasacht ó dheoise Bhaile Átha Cliath. I measc na scríbhinní tá leagan an Athar Peadar féin dá aistriúchán den Bhíobla ina pheannaireacht féin, ach a Nua-Thiomna in easnamh. Bhí prúfaí dá Nua-Thiomna ceangailte go slachtmhar mar leabhar sa leabharlann nuair a bhíos féin im’ mhac léinn sa Choláiste. Níl anois. Seachas sin tá a lámhscríbhinní de na

leaganacha a dhein sé de chuid dár seanlitríocht e.g. Bricriu, an Craos Deamhain, agus de leabhair cháiliúla arb é Don Chíochóite an ceann is suimiúla agus Aithris ar Chríost an leabhar is cruinne a lean an buntéacs, Imitatio Christi. Tuigeadh don Athair Peadar gur cheart do scríbhneoirí caint na ndaoine a bheith mar threoir acu agus nach é sampla an Chéitinnigh agus teanga chlasaiceach na mbard a bheadh mar mheán acu. Glacann gach éinne anois le tuairimí an Athar Peadar. Na léachtaí ar an ábhar seo go léir atá i Léachtaí Cholm Cille XLV agus a raibh sé d’onóir agam a sheoladh i seomra foirne Ollscoil na hÉireann Má Nuad Déardaoin seo caite 13 Márta 8.30 p.m.Tá 168 lch ann agus é ar fáil ar €10 sna siopaí maithe leabhar agus ar an mórgóir ó FÁS agus go díreach ó An Díseart, An Daingean. D’fhreastalaíos ar fhormhór Léachtaí CC XLVI ‘An Scríbhneoir Gaeilge agus Saol a Linne.’ Bhí scoláirí agus scríbhneoirí na linne ag cur ardú croí agus barr misnigh orm lena soilbhire agus a n-eolas agus a dtuairimíocht. Beidh na léachtaí seo á bhfoilsiú an bhliain seo chugainn. Bead i láthair agus mé ag siúl sine baculo, gan bata, le cúnamh Dé de bharr bheannú an Phápa mar a thaispeántar in uimhir chlabhsúir An Sagart.

The Prayer Garden The design for the Prayer Garden by Mary Reynolds we hope to realise this year if funds are available. Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and received from individuals and companies. Seats could be sponsored as the garden with its maze and prayerful atmostphere will need space and time for meditation. Festival occasions, weddings, baptisms, confirmations could have their photo shoots in any of our three gardens. The weather this year should ensure the band stand and and dancing space are put to appropriate use. Local people and visitors are just beginning to avail of the dancing and picnic spacing and furniture. An tAthair Pádraig is thrilled to hear of the €1,800,000 which his alma mater, Maynooth University Celtic Studies Faculty received as a research grant from the EU. He would have much appreciated it if this had happpened in his time there. He realises of course that he helped to lay the foundations for such a handsome boost. He hopes that An Díseart will benefit by its growing practical Maynooth contacts.

Killorglin Tidy Towns Orna Eccles Killorglin Tidy Towns this past Saturday March 14th did a great litter pick and blitzed the town in preparation for this years St. Patrick's Day parade. We weeded and removed the Cyclamen and planted a variety of spring bedding with many different bursting colours at the roundabout outside O' Grady's and also Library Place. On Saturday March 7th our crew were out in great numbers to mark a very poignant occasion where we planted an Oak Tree in memory of our Dear Friend James "jimmy" Galvin of Keelcoulaught. James was deeply involved in his community and an active member of killorglin tidy towns for the past 7 years and is truly missed. His love and passion for planting trees, shrubs and daffodils has left a legacy for future generations to come. The Tralee Rd is where he planted all the trees from the entrance to cloon pitch all the way to the turn at Bansha. John Healy worked very closely with Jimmy on this project and in his own words said he was the apprentice and Jimmy was the master. All of us that worked along side him felt we learned so much from him. He was truly a gifted man and enjoyed nature to its fullest. We were delighted to have his wife Nora, daughters Marion and Stacey and son John present for our Tree Planting Ceremony. Ar dheis De` go raibh a anam.

Condensation Problems? Tom Kennedy Condensation can be a significant problem for homeowners during the colder, winter months. With improved building features in our homes such as cavity wall insulation, double glazing and draught proofing, “natural ventilation is reduced. Stale air is trapped causing condensation, streaming windows and high moisture, which ultimately leads to musty smells, dampness and mould growth. Suitable for existing and new homes, Positive Input Ventilation systems are sophisticated whole home ventilation units which help to eliminate condensation, whilst providing clean, fresh, filtered air. Poor ventilation is the largest cause of streaming windows, musty odours, dampness, condensation, mould growth and excessive carbon dioxide in the home. A Positive Input Ventilation system eradicates these problems by introducing a subtle air supply throughout the home from a central position and transforms a stagnant, stale atmosphere into a fresh, healthy, condensation free environment. Positive Input Ventilation systems improve indoor air quality, whilst providing a significant improvement in the health of asthma 34 West Kerry Live

and allergy sufferers. Moisture laden air is diluted, displaced and replaced with clean, tempered and filtered air. This promotes free air circulation and eliminates or reduces surface condensation, which causes mould growth – improving indoor air quality, and therefore, creates a healthier living environment. During the heating season energy loss occurs by opening windows to reduce humidity

and condensation. By installing a Positive Input Ventilation system and providing fresh filtered air to the home, humid air is displaced without opening windows and thus making significant savings to the occupier. Nepal Comes to Brandon On Sunday the 23rd of March, 2014 Helena Clark of Brandon boarded a train in Tralee on a 5,000 mile journey that would take her to Kathmandu in Nepal. The backpack she had on was nearly as big as she was. Her husband, John, took a photo, smiled and kissed her goodbye with a wish for a safe journey. “You look like a little girl going off to camp”, he kidded her. For the two of them it would be a shared journey, at least in spirit. They had been down this road before in her homeland of Czechoslovakia and again in California. It was always about the children.

nutrition, a decent education and normal healthcare. Piers didn’t care that much about money, probably because he kept giving it away, the very little he had. It mostly went to pay children’s medical bills, to purchase food and clothing. Lida put it this way: “Poverty and social injustice bothered him greatly and although he wasn’t wealthy, sharing what he had came easily to him. More than anything he felt close to children, especially the underprivileged and needy ones.”

In the capital of Nepal she would meet her friend, Lida Penkova, who was flying in from San Francisco. Lida is an artist from the university town of Arcata in Northern California, was also born and raised in Czechoslovakia and is a frequent visitor to Brandon.

Piers was waiting for Helena and Lida when they arrived and from that first encounter a friendship blossomed. It was the children that drew them together. They visited a particular home for these vastly underprivileged children and discovered it “had only the basic of necessities: a roof, although leaky in spots, over their heads and some food. They lacked in virtually everything else. Some had no feet or legs. None had ever seen a medical specialist.”

Together they would travel by a rickety old jeep on narrow and twisty dirt roads up to the Himalayan foothills to a small village. And there she would see for herself the desperate plight of disabled and malnourished schoolage children. There would be work to be done.

It was from this encounter that Helena brought back to her home in Brandon a project. Once again in her life it would be about the children. She and her husband took on the sponsorship of an albino girl. Lida took on another child. At least it was a beginning.

It would not be unlike the work Helena, as a school teacher, did with Roma (Gypsy) children in her homeland; with Native American children in California; with Traveller families in County Kerry. It was always about trying to keep children in school, to better prepare them for life. To give them a fair shot despite their ethnic background or the colour of their skin.

Then tragedy struck. Word was received from overseas that Piers Helsen had fallen to his death from the edge of a high waterfall.

This continuing story began in India where Lida, on a previous visit, met an extraordinarily compassionate man by the name of Piers Helsen, a British expat who was living there. Tragically, and before Lida’s visit, Piers’ best friend, a Nepalese man, had died. But before he passed away he asked Piers to look after his Nepalese wife in their home country. And Piers did just that. He immediately moved to her village to help her and her four children. But for Piers that was not enough. It was the plight of so many other children, some homeless, some seriously disabled, some whose parents didn’t have the means to see they received proper

Helena and Lida were more determined than ever to try and find ways to continue his work. Contact had been made with Tim Gocher, Chairman of the Dolma Development Fund, a properly registered UK charity, who was already working in Nepal to assist other disadvantaged Nepalese children. He agreed to start a drive to raise funds for the construction of a new home and name it after Piers. Helena and Lida are acting as volunteers. On 11th April from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Halla Le Cheile in Brandon there will be a “Coffee Morning” to raise funds toward the construction of “The Piers Helsen Children Home” in Dhunche, Nepal. Tim Gocher, Chairman of the Dolma Development Fund will be in attendance to tell the story of the children and their needs.

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt. Caid Tá caid éirithe chughainn le déanaí buíochas le Dia. Ciarraí. Bhuaidh ár gcomharsain ortha go faoíbín le aon phointe déag, ach nár bhuaidh Corcaigh anuiridh ortha le 10 pointe sa tsraith chomórtas agus léasadar iad ina dhiaidh sin. Chuir chluiche an Domhnaigh beagnách do dhroin ortha, ach dheineadar an bheart. Ní foláir nó scaoil Maigh Eó le Bleá Cliath- bhíodar ar cheann Roinn 1. Thug Tiobrad Árann léasadh maith do Chill Cho’Dying Finnigh. Bhí cúpla imreoir in easnamh ar na ‘Cait’. Is léir ón lá eile go bhfuil an Clár ag dúiseacht agus an dála céanna fíor fé Phort Láirge. Ach nuair a thiocfaidh an comórtas mór an mbeidh siad fós beagán chun deirigh? Gach cuma go mbeidh. Corcaigh, Tiobrad Árainn, agus Cill Choinnigh fós i gceannas. An bhfuil Uí Fháilí ag eascairt arís tréis codladh gaiscígh? Conas mar atá ag Loch Garman? Níl sé soiléir fós cén cómhdhéanamh a bheidh ar na foirne seo. ’Ge baile bhuaidh sinsir na Gaeltachta ar an gCaisleán le dhá phointe agus tá siad i gcraobh chluiche Chiarraí Thiar le Lios Póil a bhuaidh ar an nDaingean Bhuaidh na mionúir ar Ghníomh go Leith, mar sin tá siad ar cheann Roinn a dó. Leabhar Bhí na céadta i láthhair i dTrá Lí an tseachtain seo caite nuair a seoladh leabhar do chuid an dochtúra Tim Horgan. ‘Dying for the cause- Kerry’s Republican dead’. Tá cúntas sa leabhar ar an hÓglaigh go léir ón gContae a maraíodh le linn ‘Cogadh an gCarad agus breis.’ Tá Tim ar choiste Náisiúnta Uaigeanna Éireann maraan le coiste Uaigeanna Chiarraí. Dúirt urlabhraí ó choiste Chiarraí Seán Ó hUallacháin gur eagraíocht deónach nea-phoitiúíl iad agus gur fútha siúd atá sé féachaint i ndiaidh uaigheanna poblachtánacha. ‘Tá fáilte roimh gach aon duine omós a thabhairt dóibh siúd a maraíodh ach is fúinne atá sé féachaint i ndiaidh na n-uaigeanna. Déanfar cúram don láthair mar a maraíodh Bob Mac Cárthaigh’, ar sé ‘agus tá airgead againn leis le feabhas a chur ar an an dtuama i gCill Drom- [rud dála an scéil atá ar siúl nó déanta acu.]. Is diail an dream iad agus is gach duine atá bainteach leo. Duirt An Dochtúir Ó Horgáin aon airgead a déanfaí ar an leabhar go gcuirfí é i dtreo choiste Uaigeanna Náisiúnta an chontae é. Mar a dúirt ar an raidio chuir Tomás ó Conchúir, trócaire air, ó Bhaile Reo, ‘geasa’ orm féachaint chuige go gcuirfí cros mar a maraíodh Tomás ó Suilleabháin. Is deas a fheiscint go bhfuil scata daoine ag déanamh gaiscí, anois go bhfuil 2016 chugainn. Is maith san. Scannán Bhíos ag féachaint ar an scannán Subs’ a dhein Brenda ní Shúillebháin agus a cáirde ar an scata Gréagach a chuireadh i dtír ar an gCuáisin, Bhaile Móir le linn an dara Cogadh Domhanda tréis do Úbhád Gearmánach a long a scrios. Caithfead a rá go raibh sé go diail ar fad. Thug Brenda moladh do Bhreandán Ó Cíobháin as a a cuid eolais agus taighde ar an abhar. Labhair Eibhlín Uí Chléirigh RIP, Mike Griffin agus Paddy Ó Fiannachta le clos go fuaimintúil. Ag deire chuir Seán mac ‘n tSíthigh, is maith é, agallamh ar Bhrenda fén abhar. Léirigh go raibh fios a cúraim go slachtmhar aici. Bhí an Phoenix plódaithe. Gach duine níos a shásta ná a chéile. Is fiú dhuit é a fheiscint. Páirtí Nua Conas mar a bheidh ag Renua- is dócha gur Ré ann féin é. Tá moladh tuillte ag aon dream a chuireann iad féin ós chomhair an phobail. Beidh dream áirithe a déarfaidh gur gal suip é. Ná bímís ró- dhian fós ar na daoine seo mar tá siad ag caint fé lán dhaonlathacht agus ag éileamh macántacht imeasc a mbaill. Beidh seacht mháchaillí an tSlé á chasadh leo má meastar go mbeidh aon dul chun cinn á dhéanamh acu, ach deirim-se seo libh níor chaill fear/bean an Mhisnigh riamh é agus tá misneach gan teora acu. Cuirfidh a leithéid náire ar shúile gac páirtí poilitíochta a chnosnaíonn mórán airgid agus a thuarann agus a gheallann fiche rud ná bactar leo tréis an toghcháin. Sea, cuirfidh siad béasa i lucht an ghustail [ cuid maith acu ina bpáirtí ] agus na ngeallúintí follsa, nó? Lá L’Pádraig Sea, tá Lá L’Pádraig tharainn agus is iontach mar a fhás an ‘Lá’ ar fuaid an domhain. Is deas go bhfuil an coiste Paráide anso ar an mBuailtín 40 West Kerry Live

a eagraigh Daryl Broe agus Paráid don gcéad uair i mBaile na nGallan fíor gur í an pharáid is giorra in Éirinn í seo? Ní lochtódh san í. Is cuma, mar beidh Pádraig sásta. Ní labhras fén gCarghas i mbliana agus go mbíonn briseadh beag ag aon duine a bhíonn an déanamh an Charghaís Lá L’Pádraig. Na daoine a bhuail liom is atá páirteach i siúlóidí, a sláinte a bhíonn ag déanamh mearbhaill dóibh. Is le ómos do Naomh Pádraig na páráidí. Bíonn siúlóidí mar Charghas ag daoine áirithe, cuid eile ag séanadh thobac, deoch meisciúil, agus mílseáin ag dream eile. An raibh sé i gceist ag aon duine gan aon mhallacht, ná mionna mór a spalpadh i rith an charghais. An raibh sé i gceist ag aon duine maithiúnachas a thabhairt do dhaoine a dhein treasnaíol ortha? Cad fútha siúd a bhíonn coitianta ag scaoithireacht, ag maíomh, nó ag lochtú le teann formaid. Go macánta is beag dos na daoine seo ann agus n’fheadar cén méid acu a dheineann an Carghas. Chuala sagart ag ceistiú, an mó duine a dheireann a bpaidreacha ar maidin agus tráthnóna. ‘An mó duine’, ar sé, ‘a chuimhníonn ar an mairbh nó a chuireann síntiúis i dteo eagraíochtaí fóirthinte le bia, éadach, leigheas agus oideachas a chur ar dhaoine in aiteanna go bhfuil galar agus gorta gan trácht ar chogaí, á bhfágaint tréith lag’. Má bhí sé i gceist agat an Carghas a dhéanamh agus gur dhearmadais é- ní cás tosnú anois. Dá mbeadh daoine níos ionraice is mó dea-chorr sa chruinne a bheadh ag bláthú. Mo ghraidhn do cheann. Sin seanmóin na seachtaine seo.

Question I am a medical card holder. I have just realised that I am paying more than the monthly cap of €25 for our family’s prescriptions. Why did this happen and can I get a refund? Answer If you have a medical card, you are charged €2.50 for each prescription item you receive. Usually your pharmacy keeps records of how much you have paid and makes sure that you do not pay more than €25 each month on prescription charges. However, you may use different pharmacies in the same month or your family members may not have the same medical card number (for example, if a different doctor is used) and you may end up paying more than the cap of €25 per family per month. If a person or family pays more than €25 in a month, the Health Service Executive (HSE) will issue a refund at the end of the quarter, without you needing to apply. This is done on the basis of the information received from your pharmacy. However, if you think that you have not received the refund due you can also claim directly from the HSE using HYPERLINK “https://www.sspcrs.ie/portal/medapp/refund_form.pdf” claim form PC1 (which you can download from medicalcard.ie, collect at your Local Health Office or get by phon-

Dying for the Cause Kerry’s Republican Dead le

Tim Horgan foilsithe ag

Dingle

Mercier Press ‘As Kerry IRA Volunteer Con Looney’s life faded from him on 27 September 1922, his final words were recorded by his comrades: ‘Give my rifle to my brother, my love to my mother and tell them I am dying for the cause.’ The cause Looney died for was that of an Irish Republic of thirty-two counties. Yet his sacrifice, and that of many of his Kerry comrades, has been forgotten over the years. In Dying for the Cause Tim Horgan tells the story of the lives and deaths of the 161 Kerrymen who are known to have died fighting for an Irish Republic from the time of the Easter Rising right up to the 1980s. Many of these men were killed in action, but others were executed or died in captivity as a result of brutality or neglect. Some had their physical or mental health broken, ending their young lives prematurely, but theirs was no less a sacrifice than had they fallen in the heat of battle. However, one thing is clear from all of their stories - these men, no matter where or how they died, all deserve to be remembered with pride by the people not just of Kerry, but of Ireland.’ Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis

Tigh Glas Programme Scoil Iognáid Rís, Dingle We have been working on the Green home Programme for the past two years. Susan from An Taisce come to explain to us what Green Home is. She showed us a slideshow on the themes of Waste, Water , Transport and energy. It made us all think about how we treat the environment and how wasteful we can be. We learned how to conserve energy and water and to manage waste. Green home showed us how walking more and driving less has benefits for all. Also buying local produce reduces air miles and packaging. Shop Local!!!!!! I think Green home has taught us a valuable lesson and we are now more aware of our responsibility to the environment,
