Greetings, Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan soccer teams. I hope that you will find the 2013 Titan Soccer Guide beneficial as you learn about our team. Westminster soccer players benefit from the opportunity to compete at a regional level. Our teams have won eight conference championships (5 women’s, 3 men’s) since 2002 and made eight trips to the NCAA Division III tournament during that span. Sixteen players (9 women, 7 men) have earned 22 all-region selections since 1998. Our regional success is a testament to our challenging nonconference schedules that often include multiple teams ranked in the Top 10 in our region. We don’t just recruit players locally. Many student-athletes realize the value of a high-level soccer program and a Westminster education and travel great distances to contribute to our success. The type of student-athlete we recruit excels on the field and in the classroom with many players earning recognition on the Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams.

Our school and its administration have recognized the importance of our soccer programs. Since adding our women’s team in 1998, they have made positive strides in improving both our men’s and women’s soccer facilities including new locker rooms, a new international size grass field, and a field with artificial turf and lights for night games. We are proud of our soccer programs here at Westminster and we challenge more quality studentathletes to help continue our success.

Having coached the Westminster College men’s and women’s soccer teams concurrently since 2002 and the men’s team since 1998, Girish Thakar has won a combined 301 wins and eight conference championships, while making 12 postseason appearances. Since Thakar took over both teams ten years ago, Westminster has qualified for the NCAA Championships eight times, including three for the men (2002, 2004, 2008) and five for the women (2002-05, 2007). In addition, the eight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) titles the Titans have collected includes three for the men (2002, 2006, 2008) and five for the women (2002-04, 2006-07). Thakar was named PAC Coach of the Year four times, three for women’s soccer (2002, 2005, 2006) and one for men’s (2008). Both teams won the PAC title in the same year in 2002 and 2006, with the latter considered Thakar’s finest year of coaching as both teams won the league crowns as underdogs and qualified for the postseason in the ECAC Division III South Championships. Thakar enters his 16th season with the men and 12th with the women in 2013 for a combined record of 301-198-41 (.595). Thakar’s 15-year record as Westminster’s men’s coach is 157-124-18 (.555), including a team-record 17-6 mark in 2008 after the Titans won the PAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Thakar took the reins of the Westminster women’s program on an interim basis in 2002, then was named permanent head coach prior to the 2003 season. During the past 11 seasons, the Titan women are a combined 144-74-23 (.645) with five PAC championships and four-straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2002-05. Prior to coaching at Westminster, Thakar was the head men’s coach at his alma mater, Slippery Rock University, from 1993-96, after graduating from SRU in 1991 and later earning a master’s degree from the school. As a player at Slippery Rock, Thakar was a four-year starter who earned all-PSAC honors.

Men’s Assistant Coach

Joseph Karmazin is entering his first season as the Assistant Coach for the Westminster Men’s Soccer Team in 2013. Karmazin is a 2013 graduate from Gannon University. He earned a degree in Mathematics and certification for Secondary Education. As an athlete, Karmazin was a runner on the Gannon Men’s Cross County Team all four years and was a PSAC Scholar Athlete. Karmazin is originally from Salem, OH, where he played soccer from the age of 6 to his senior season at United Local. Joe will be working towards a masters degree in the field of education.

Women’s Assistant Coach

Gabriel Kleinert is entering his first season as the assistant coach for the Westminster women’s soccer team in 2013. Kleinert has been a volunteer coach for the past two seasons with both the Titan men’s and women’s soccer teams. Kleinert has been coaching at PA Crew Soccer Academy for the past three years and currently coaches the U16 and U17 girls teams. His teams have won Jefferson Cup, Baltimore Mania, Ohio Nike Challenge Cup, Columbia Invitational, US Club Regionals, and have finished as State Cup Finalists. Kleinert possesses a NSCAA National Diploma and a Coerver Youth Diploma. As a player, Kleinert was a four-year starter at Geneva College, where the Golden Tornadoes recorded the third-most wins in school history (53). He graduated from Geneva in 2011 with degree’s in Business and Sports Management. Kleinert is originally from Lansdale, Pa.

Men’s Season Outlook

The Westminster College men’s soccer team looks to continue to make a powerful impact in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) in 2013. The Titans, who were ranked fourth in the nation for most improved in 2012, finished fourth in the PAC with a record of 11-6-2 and a conference record of 5-2-1. Westminster has 11 returning lettermen, including nine starters. All-PAC honorees senior forward David Osae, sophomore midfielder Ethan McCarthy, and sophomore midfielder Stephen McDaniel return for the Titans this year. Osae’s team-leading three gamewinning goals tied for third best in the PAC, while his 10 points stood third on the team. McCarthy tied for first on the team and was ninth in the PAC with 17 points, while McDaniel ranked fourth on the team with 12 points. The other returning lettermen for Westminster include senior Shane Noteboom, juniors Ryan Francis and Dan Bishop, and sophomores Austin Ewers, Marcus Gurgiolo, Matthew Kiernan, Eric Michalski, and Cody Postupac.

Since the end of last season, the Titans have lost three starting seniors that made an impact on the program. Goalie Adam Kephart recorded 77 saves, Josh Cantella was the leading scorer with seven goals, and Zach Meluch had nine career goals in his time playing for Westminster. Almost three quarters of the team are underclassmen and Thaker expects the underclassmen to step up and make an immediate impact. “Obviously, the status of being ranked the fourth most improved team in the nation is great for our team. However, at the end of the day, we are looking at what is on the field and on paper - the mark of improvement in players, their attitude and work ethic, and a team that plays hard the whole game,” said Thaker. “What we need to do is make sure that we play strong all through the season because anyone can beat anyone on any given day. If we can step up and play at a high level consistently, we will be in good shape this season.” “Our goals are always for us to make the playoffs, win the conference title, and compete in the NCAA tournament. The players we have right now have those dreams and aspirations and we want to push towards those goals during every minute of play this season.”

Women’s Season Outlook

The Titan women’s soccer team finished the 2012 season 7-8-5 overall and 2-4-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). It was only the third time in 15 years of existence that the Titans had a losing record, finishing seventh in the final PAC standings. The Titans won three out of their last four games of the season and look to carry over that momentum to the 2013 season. “This team must be more consistent this year,” said Girish Thaker who is starting his 12th year as the Titan women’s head coach. “We have to be optimistic this year because we have players returning that have improved. We also have freshmen that are coming in to challenge them.” Westminster’s 2012 All-PAC honorees were senior midfielder Jordan Steele and sophomore midfielder Krista Edwards. There are a total of 15 returning letterwinners for the 2013 squad. The returning letter winners along with Edwards and Steele are seniors Haley Casuccio, Maggie Nikituk, Amanda Turi, and Kristina Tissue, junior Kerri

Inzinga, and sophomores Selena Dasari, Allee Oskin, Kelsey Rogers, Gretchen Schwarz, Rebecca Bradnam, Mere Mishler, Raechel Pusateri, and Rachel Simko. Turi led the Titans in goals (6) and assists (5) for a team-high 17 points a season ago. “We have some good players already in this program that will see the field, but these younger players are going to come in and they are going to work hard and challenge the girls that are already here,” added Thaker. “Any of the PAC teams can make a push to postseason play,” said Thaker. “I think it is going to be interesting.”

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

here are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that compete in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last nine years, 11 Westminster teams have either qualified for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Championship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.

estminster student-athletes enjoy access to outstanding athletics facilities on campus. With the exception of the golf teams, all of the Titans compete and practice on campus in one centralized location. Each team has access to its own locker room in the Memorial Field House, which is also a short walking distance to all venues.

Soccer Fields

Westminster soccer plays its home games at two on-campus facilities. The natural grass soccer field (below) opened for the 2000 season. It is located east of Brittain Lake. A new scoreboard (right) was installed prior to the 2004 season. The soccer teams also play home games â&#x20AC;&#x201C; mostly night games â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at Harold Burry Stadium (above) beginning for the 2008 season when new artificial FieldTurf and lighting was installed.

The PAC F ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
