2014 Titan Baseball

Future Titans, Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and the Titan Baseball program. I hope you find this guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the men who are enjoying their Titan Baseball experience.

We start the season with one goal in mind, to bring an NCAA World Series Championship to Westminster. This starts first and foremost with a PAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. We as coaches are also concerned with our players excelling in the classroom as well as on the field. What’s most important to us as coaches is preparing our players for success long after their baseball careers have ended. We are looking for skilled players to continue the success of our baseball team. I know that making your college choice is one of the most important decisions of your life. I would like to discuss with you the challenges and rewards of being a Titan baseball player.

Tim Mulligan Head Coach

Coaching Staff

Tim Mulligan enters his second year as the Westminster head baseball coach in 2014 after spending the previous two seasons as the associate head coach and pitching coach. Under the tutelage of Mulligan, the Titan baseball staff has had its two best seasons as a collective staff. Two seasons ago, the team ranked 27th in Division III in team ERA. In his time as the associate coach, the Titans have compiled a 53-33 record; including a school record 28 wins in 2012, a PAC Championship, and Westminster’s first ever appearance in an NCAA Tournament. Under Mulligan , there have been extraordinary gains in the performance of the Titan pitching staff.

Being around baseball his whole life has given Mulligan knowledge of the game that is matched by few other coaches. This shows his ability to develop players in the 15 years he spent as a pro skills coach prior to coming to Westminster. In his coaching career, he has sent three players to Europe to play professionally, had two players playing in the independent leagues, as well as sending over 50 players in the past five years to a college program to continue their baseball careers. In addition he spent six years as a scout with Paramount Scouting as well as six years as assistant GM of the Roth Brothers Youngstown Class B team. As an independent league head coach for various teams, Mulligan boasts a 135-70 career record. Mulligan, a U.S. Navy veteran, currently lives in Brookfield, OH with his wife Nancy and has two sons, Patrick and Matthew. In addition to coaching the Titans baseball team, Mulligan also runs Back To Basics Baseball, a program designed to teach younger players basic fundamentals of the game and achieve their dream of playing at the next level. Some player comments on Coach Mulligan: “His knowledge of the game and passion for coaching makes his players rise to a new level” - Catcher Jake Haubrich, ‘15 “He’s easily the best coach I’ve ever played for. He knows the game and how to teach it with the best of them, and on top of that you can joke around with the guy. You’re not likely to find too many coaches you’re comfortable just hanging out with; guys are going to love playing for him.” -Pitcher Nick Grow, ‘13

Tommy Otto

Assistant Coach

Tommy Otto enters his second season with Westminster and 21st season as a baseball coach in 2014. He serves the team as assistant head coach, the hitting coach, and the recruiting coordinator. Otto has led nine regional teams and 11 state qualifying teams in amateur baseball throughout his career. Otto has spent 15 years as the head coach of a Youngstown Class B team and 11 seasons as a coach for Youngstown Chaney High School. Otto has been instrumental in player development throughout his career as he has sent 135 players on to play college baseball in 15 seasons as an amateur head coach. He has also coached three players that have been drafted to play professional baseball and 39 division one players.

2014TITANBASEBALL

Jack Hay

Dave Smercansky Assistant Coach

Dave Smerkcansky enters his first year as an assistant coach in 2014. Smerkcansky, who is currently the Athletic Director at Boardman High School, was also the head baseball coach at Boardman for 12 years that included one State final, three Regional championships, and six District championships. Smerkcansky previously taught 19 years at Boardman.

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Baseball Field L ocated adjacent to Memorial Field House and Burry Stadium, the Westminster baseball diamond has been the home of the Titans throughout the program’s history. The field’s unusual dimensions are 370 feet down the right field line, 360 feet to center field, and 340 feet down the left field line. The field’s signature feature is in left field, as home runs routinely find their way into Brittain Lake. The field underwent extensive renovations in 2004, including the addition of new dugouts, bullpen areas, a new backstop and completion of the right field fence.

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
