2013-14 Titans

Prospective Student-Athletes, We are excited about your interest in Westminster College Track & Field and Cross Country. This guide will provide you with much information about who our teams are and what we are about. We are in the process of building a winning tradition in our Track & Field/Cross Country programs and we would love for you to be a part of it. Our goals each and every year are to win the Presidents’ Athletic Championship (PAC), to qualify individuals/teams/relays to the NCAA National Championships, and to come together as a family. In the last six years, our women have won four PAC Championships and the men have won three championships. In six years we have had five All-Americans. We’ve definitely succeeded in becoming a family. We believe in the family-style atmosphere that builds teamwork and friendships that will last a lifetime. We build our training program on a logical progression to peak at our conference championships. All of this creates a fun environment for our student-athletes.

Tim McNeil enters his seventh year as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs at Westminster College for the 2013-14 season. McNeil immediately put his thumbprint on the programs as the Titan women’s track and field team won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship in each of his first three years after winning its first-ever PAC title in McNeil’s first year in 2008. The men’s track and field team, which finished last in the PAC in McNeil’s first year, won its first-ever PAC title in 2011. In 2012, for the first time in school history, the Titan men’s and women’s track and field teams won the PAC championship in the same year. McNeil was named PAC Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010 and PAC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012. Other unprecedented success achieved by the Titans under McNeil included the women’s track and field team sending athletes to the NCAA Division III Championship meet in 2008 for the first time, the men’s and women’s track and field team producing NCAA All-Americans for the first time in 2012, 2011 and 2008, respectively, and the women’s cross country team placing second in the PAC and 17th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, each marking the team’s highest-ever finish. Overall during McNeil’s tenure, Westminster track and field athletes have claimed 44 PAC event titles (32 women’s, 12 men’s). McNeil became the school’s first full-time employee exclusively dedicated to coaching both the Titan track and field and cross country programs when he was hired in July 2007. A native of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, McNeil is a 1996 graduate of Westminster having excelled for the Titans in track and field and football. In track, McNeil was a three-time qualifier for the NAIA national championships in the 400-meter hurdles from 1994-96. His school record of 53.8 in the 400 hurdles still stands. On the grid-iron, McNeil was the most valuable player in the 1994 NAIA national championship game. McNeil ranks second on the school’s career receptions list (129) and fifth in the receiving yards (1,849) in four seasons from 1992-95. McNeil previously coached track and field at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio, from 2000-06 where he was the school’s assistant principal from 2004-06. A 2005 inductee to the Westminster Titan Sports Hall of Fame, McNeil completed his master’s degree in education from his alma mater in 2004. McNeil and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Niles, Ohio, with their three children; Zoe, Micah and Piper. Scott Coy begins his eighth season as assistant track and field coach for the Titans in 2013. His coaching concentration will focus on sprinters, relays, long jumpers and strength and conditioning. Coy, a full-time member of the Westminster Department of Athletics, is also an assistant football coach. A native of West Salem, Ohio, and a 1998 graduate of Norwayne High School, Coy earned a master’s degree from Northern Illinois (2006) and a bachelor’s degree from Mount Union (2002). He was an assistant football coach at each of his alma maters, while as a player at Mount Union he was a starting offensive lineman on the Purple Raiders’ 2001 national championship team.

Bradi Rhoades enters his seventh year on the Titan track and field staff in 2013 as jumps coordinator and pole vault coach. The Titans have won the men’s pole vault title in each of the last four seasons and the women’s title in the last three seasons. Last season, Rhoades coached the first female twotime All-American in Titan Track & Field history. A Slippery Rock University graduate, Rhoades was a six-time allconference pole vaulter from 2002-04. He most recently served as an assistant track and field coach at Wilmington High School.

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.

W

estminster student-athletes enjoy access to outstanding athletics facilities on campus. With the exception of the golf teams, all of the Titans compete and practice on campus in one centralized location. Each team has access to its own locker room in the Memorial Field House, which is also a short walking distance to all venues.

Athletics Facilties

The Westminster men’s and women’s track & field programs compete at the newly-renovated Harold Burry Stadium. The stadium has new lighting, pedestrian walkway and entrance plaza, and FieldTurf surface new for 2008-09. The eight-lane, all-weather track surface was installed during the 2002 season thanks to a $500,000 gift from the Hoyt Foundation in New Castle, Pa. The track complex also includes a steeplechase pit, jumping pits, high jump and pole vault areas, and throwing areas for field events. The cross country course loops around the scenic Westminster campus that includes Brittain Lake.

The PAC

F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
