Weston-super-Mare FESTIVAL of FOOD If you love food, you’ll love the Weston Super Food Festival!

We can promise a tasty celebration of all that’s good about real food. And that means food that’s produced by small producers with love and care using quality ingredients to deliver great taste and real flavour. The festival will focus on local and regional produce showcasing all the wonderful food and drink that’s made the West Country famous. We are ardent supporters of local shopping but you’ll also find specialist food that you might not be able to source locally from some of the best award winning organic and artisan producers from around the UK. As you browse, taste and buy your way around the festival you’ll be able explore our vibrant indoor and outdoor food markets and grab a tasty snack from the many exciting street food stalls. And by street food we mean delicious and innovative ‘food to go’ - not the usual fast food horrors!

You’ll be able to pick up some great culinary tips too from professional chefs in our demonstration kitchen and discover the real stories behind the food you buy at our ‘meet the producer’ sessions.

The Festival is also a great chance to visit Westonsuper-Mare’s many great cafés and restaurants who will be offering special festival menus and ‘meal deals’ not just during the festival weekend but also during ‘Weston Super Food Festival’ fortnight which runs from September 14th – 29th. During Festival Fortnight, just to show that we foodies are a very creative bunch both inside and outside the kitchen, you can enjoy our very own food inspired festival fringe with comedy at the Winter Gardens, poetry and visual art at Weston Arts gallery, film and music at Loves, and local food history at the Museum. What’s not to like?!

Find out more at www.westonsuperfoodfestival.co.uk Weston Super Food Festival – September 21st/22nd Weston-super-Mare town centre 10am – 5.30pm Winter Gardens & Town Square. Admission Free

Dental Disease in Cats & Dogs 80% of cats and dogs over 3 years old will be affected with dental disease. It is important to have your pets teeth checked regularly, because the early stages of dental disease are reversible. If the early stages of dental disease are left untreated this will progress into irreversible periodontal disease. Once pets develop periodontal disease it is a progressive disease even with management. The best way to prevent dental disease is with home dental care

We recommend your pet has a check on their teeth at least every 6 months.

PLAQUE – Is a biofilm composed of aggregates of bacteria and their bi-products. Plaque is NOT visible to the naked eye. Over time plaque will become mineralised to form dental calculus which is visible to the naked eye. Undisturbed plaque accumulation results in GINGIVITIS.

You can keep up to date with all our latest news by visiting our Facebook page.

Dental checks with a nurse are FREE OF CHARGE. Green pastures nurses are happy to demonstrate how to brush your pets teeth and talk through alternative approaches if you struggle with tooth brushing.

GINGIVITIS – Is a reversible plaque induce inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis can vary in severity with swelling, reddening and bleeding of the gums. This is often accompanied by halitosis (bad breath). The gum attachments will loosen from the tooth and plaque will accumulate in a developing pocket between the gum and the tooth. The aim of dental intervention at this point is to clean out the gum pockets and teeth and to try to get the gum to re-attach to the tooth.

TIPS FOR TOOTHBRUSHING • Start tooth brushing at an early age – even before the permanent teeth have erupted. • Approach the animal from the side rather than the front. • Start with just a few teeth to begin with. • Concentrate on the outer surfaces of the teeth to begin with as those are the ones that accumulate most plaque. • Sit small dogs/cats on your lap so they get a cuddle at the same time. • If your pets mouth is sore, this is not the time to start brushing the teeth as your pet will be unlikely to cooperate. It is best to have veterinary treatment first then start home dental care once the mouth is comfortable. www.westonandworleadvertiser.com

6150 Sergeant Allan (Allen) Ernest Horne was born in Hatherden, Andover, Hampshire, in 1890 to Nathaniel Horne, an agricultural worker and Fanny Louisa Horne (nee Baker). After leaving school he followed in his father’s footsteps, being employed by his uncle John Baker, of Laurel Farm, Worle, as a farm labourer, with whom he also lived. It is probably that Allan was unable to find suitable work in Hatherden, or in the immediate neighbourhood, so was forced to find work further afield. He enlisted, in Weston-super-Mare, in the 8th Battalion, Prince Albert’s (Somerset Light Infantry). He died aged 27, from wounds received in France, on the 28th December 1917 and is buried in plot 2D, grave number 62, the Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France. He was awarded the 15 Star (indicating that he was in France in early 1914 with the British Expeditionary Force), as well as the British and Victory Medals. His mother, Fanny, was to suffer a double tragedy. Her husband, Nathaniel, also died in December 1917. Allan’s mother, having outlived both her husband and son, died in 1938. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a photograph of Allan. Frank Gosden Worle History Society
