Melbourne Metro Extension
Melbourne, Australia Delivering a world class passenger experience High quality integrated public realm Supporting urban regeneration Delivered through PPP funding and partnerships
The bid winning concept of an ‘open metro’ for Melbourne builds on experience of designing world-class stations for Crossrail in London. The design for each of the five new stations maximises fresh air and natural light in generous station spaces. The concept creates an extension of Melbourne’s famous public realm within the stations, each of which reflect the distinctive character of their local precinct. Extensive voids between levels create intuitive passenger journeys through a series of dramatic inter-linked spaces.
Paddington Elizabeth Line Station

The new Paddington Elizabeth line station successfully balances the complexities of designing adjacent to a Grade I listed structure with the delivery of a modern elegant new station. Heritage, conservation, transport integration, wayfinding, servicing and security are all carefully considered in the creation of a world-class pedestrian space.
I think the station has turned in to the jewel in the Crossrail crown; the challenge for next year is to maintain this – I would like to think you will be there to ensure this!” Julian Robinson, Head of Architecture, Crossrail
Waterloo Station
London, UK Innovative delivery model through collaborative working Seamless integration Repurposing of existing structures to create new spaces
Five new platforms have replaced the former Eurostar terminal at Waterloo station, delivered using an innovative alliancing model. Along with the platforms, the redevelopment includes new concourse interchange stairs, lifts and ramps, to improve accessibility for all across the concourse and platforms, and new staff facilities. A new elegant glass enclosure connects the Eurostar terminal’s distinctive three-pin arch roof to the main Waterloo station roof. A new pedestrian bridge joins the main station to a new generous concourse area, with extra ticket barriers and new customer information screens. A direct connection between the iconic Victory Arch entrance and the new platforms 20–24 is now provided and for the first time the former Eurostar terminal provides seamlessly integrated additional capacity for domestic services. London Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, currently serving approximately 100 million annual passenger journeys, and with usage forecast to increase significantly. The £800 million Waterloo and South West Upgrade will boost capacity at the station by 30%.

London Overground
London, UK Line wide identity Component design Catalyst for townscape regeneration
The extensions to the London overground have significantly altered the landscape of the city, opening up new areas for development, particularly to the east. From the outset, we were responsible for establishing the identity of the line, creating a distinctive feel that is complimentary to the London underground while remaining separate. The stations themselves are distinct to the local area, acting as a catalyst for development and regeneration, while delivering new landmark stations, showcasing the best in modern construction materials and design. •

South Kensington Station
London, UK Extensive stakeholder engagement Phased upgrade programme Grade II listed revetment wall
After more than a decade of rejected design applications by different architects, listed consent and prior approval has been granted for a new ticket hall and platform at Grade II listed South Kensington station, one of London’s landmark underground stations. Our design holistically addresses the operational capacity upgrade requirements while preserving, enhancing and celebrating the station’s key listed heritage assets. Phase 1 includes the ticket hall extension, a dedicated District and Circle line eastbound platform, an associated canopy and escape stairs. The ticket hall extension, with repositioned gate-line, through-lifts, a designated waiting area and new platform stairs, will significantly improve capacity, passenger distribution and wayfinding.
This is a fantastic milestone for those involved, considering that no consent has been granted for major works at this station since it was listed in 2004. It’s also a strong reflection on the quality of the work and input you have had on the design, engagement with the community and the collaborative approach you took with TfL.” Chris Phiniefs, TfL lead sponsor
Weston Williamson + Partners designs for the Phase 1 scheme make a considerable contribution to improving circulation, capacity, wayfinding and enhancing the user experience in the station. The designs are sympathetic to the heritage significance of the station, with sight lines and scale that restore a sense of the grandeur of the original station, without pastiche.” The Exhibition Road Cultural Group

Rail Baltica
Riga, Latvia Multi-modal interchange Transport masterplanning Wayfinding
Our multi-modal transport hub and Rail Baltica railway bridge reconnects disparate parts of Riga for commuters and pedestrians and transforms a congested traffic hot-spot into a harmonious public realm. The proposals include uninterrupted level and traffic-free pedestrian access between Riga Central Station and Riga’s Old Town, the creation of a new public park, step-free pedestrian access to Riga’s river front and a fully integrated multi-modal transport hub at Riga Central Station, with easy and intuitive transfers between transport modes.
Seoul Yeoui-Naru Ferry Terminal
Seoul, South Korea Multi-modal transport hub Retail space Multi-functional urban realm
Our design creates a unique landmark for Seoul and a memorable meeting point on the edge of the Han River. A truly public ferry terminal, it fosters a new and exciting bond between the people of Seoul and the waterway which has enriched their lives for centuries. Sitting half on the water and half on the land, the building provides a seamless connection between the two. A water courtyard provides a multifunctional gathering space and ecological zone and allows people to experience this huge waterway in an intimate setting.
HS4Air
South East England, UK Multi-modal transport hub Transport orientated development Joined up thinking on infrastructure Re-use of existing lines Supporting regional regeneration
HS4Air is a radical proposal for a new high-speed railway around London, developed by Expedition Engineering, us and development consultants Turley. The new railway will connect HS1 at Ashford to HS2 northwest of London via Heathrow and Gatwick airports, with a spur connection to the Great Western main line. This ‘M25 for high speed trains’ will slash journey times between the UK’s two most important airports to just 15 minutes and drastically reduce travel times from towns and cities in the South East to the Midlands, North England and South Wales. By providing a high speed rail by-pass around London, fast direct passenger and freight trains from the Midlands and North England to Europe become possible. City centre to city centre journey times from both Birmingham and Manchester to Paris will be significantly faster using HS4Air versus flying. New connectivity created by HS4Air, and the four new transport hubs along its route, will boost regional economies across the country as well as economic activity between the UK and Europe.
