The new DLR station will be required to fulfil many functions as its locality changes and grows. Acting as a catalyst for urban growth, the station plays a central role in the wider development of the public realm and is both an entrance and exit point for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its facilities. It was critical that the station and urban realm were designed together as an integrated and flexible proposal. WW+P designed-in flexibility to Pudding Mill Lane station, presenting an elegant structure that works both now and in the future. It is the first DLR station with such in-built passive provision. Precast brick panels that form the exterior of the station undercroft can be peeled back and replaced with an active street frontage and 1,000m2 of retail space. Space for additional escalators and lifts is already provided in the station, hidden from public view but

ready when demand requires without costly alterations. The design is driven by its context and presents a simple legible building and integrated public relam that is intuitive, safe and responds to the existing and changing context. A new station square provides a flexible space for circulation and management of large event crowds generated by the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London stadium. WW+P worked closely with the client and contractor team to introduce innovative construction methods including preassembled and approved material prototypes. High quality UK based prefabricated elements reduced construction time, cost, material usage, transportation waste and delivered a minimalist, crisply detailed architectural solution.

DLR Extension to London City Airport When designing new stations on existing networks, there needs to be a balance between adhering to the overall brand identity and reflecting the local context. Common prefabricated elements can provide value for money and cohesiveness but, the personality of the area and its aspirations also needs to be integrated into the design. The four new stations on the DLR extension had very distinct locations - from Pontoon Dock sitting alongside the Thames Barrier Park and part of a wider area masterplan, to London City Airport, which needed to provide a seamless link from the station to the airport. The Docklands Light Railway is a key component of London’s infrastructure and its expansion continues to support the City’s growth. The extension of the line from Canning Town to London City Airport created direct

WOODS BAGOT | Weston Williamson + Partners

links to the City and opened the airport up to new users. Building on our DLR Design Guide we were able to develop unique solutions that were sympathetic to the individual surroundings while still maintaining the coherent feel of the overall network. At London City we designed a fully enclosed station with a glazed walkway direct to the airport. Passengers have a seamless journey via escalators and lifts; the glass roof to the station and platforms allows natural light to filter in, creating a pleasant environment and a great start to a journey. Our timeless designs for all four stations incorporated many elements of the DLR Design Guide and developed them further, integrating them with the urban fabric and enabling them to develop with their surroundings in the future.

Paddington Elizabeth Line Station Brunel located Paddington station within a cutting, one level below ground and adjoining fixed boundaries of residential streets and the Grand Union Canal. Its position made the introduction of the new Elizabeth Line station complicated and challenging but also presented the opportunity to resolve historic problems around connectivity with the site. Key to delivering a successful station design was the integration of the new building into the existing Grade I listed structure. The relationship between the old and the new needed to be sensitively handled. The station entrance is positioned directly above the station box and is central to an expansive new area of public realm which has been made possible by relocating the taxi rank to a new position north of the station. The refurbished public realm extends the length of Eastbourne Terrace and sensitively incorporates station infrastructure such as

WOODS BAGOT | Weston Williamson + Partners

ventilation head houses. Mindful of the station’s heritage, we replaced the original station canopy, which was badly damaged in the war, with a new one of the same length but elevated one storey. This increases the scale of the volume below the canopy to echo the existing train sheds, extending the station and providing a recognisable civic presence. Our final station configuration provides a clear and legible environment for passengers with sky views from the platforms through the glazed canopy. The canopy incorporates a large scale cloud artwork by Spencer Finch, which changes according to the light, the sun’s position and the time of day. The large voids bring daylight deep into the station to reduce the need for artificial light and to allow natural ventilation to form part of the station environmental strategy.

Woolwich Elizabeth Line Station Woolwich station is a complex, multidisciplinary project that demanded innovative design solutions to achieve the client’s visionary ambition. In addition, the scheme involved a significant range of stakeholders. The site, steeped in military history, was the largest armaments manufacturer in WWI. Our design needed to respond sensitively, but define its own civic presence, carefully considering the surrounding oversite developments which are situated above the platform and adjacent to the over ground structures. Key to the project’s success was our ability to integrate the station seamlessly into the Royal Arsenal masterplan. Woolwich is a 256m long box railway station which includes two over ground structures connected by a sub-surface platform. To link the station with its remarkable history, two major facades depict a contemporary

WOODS BAGOT | Weston Williamson + Partners

representation of a memorial bronze plaque which was developed on the site during WWI. The station entrance incorporates over 350 cast bronze panels, each two metres wide and weighing more than 80kg. They express an exploded ‘Woolwich rifling’ motif, which was developed on site in 1865. The panels are manufactured with the same authentic techniques used at the Royal Arsenal site during the war. Fundamental to the project’s success was our decision to engage key stakeholders early in the scheme, allowing us to expose any untapped value from the masterplan. Our understanding of the surrounding development phasing, third party interface requirements and the local development plan unlocked significant cost and programme savings.

Architecture, Interior Design

The upgrade to Central Station is a key component within the $20 billion Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, Australia’s biggest public transport infrastructure project. The metro upgrade includes the main concourse, a 19-meter-wide tunnel from Central Walk to Chalmers Street, northern concourse (interface between the new metro and the existing station), the metro box platforms and build in escalators. Central Station is the backbone of Sydney’s public transport network, with more than 250,000 people passing through the station every day. That number is forecast to grow to 450,000 in the next two decades. Central Walk concourse will better connect customers to trains, buses, light rail and the new Sydney Metro. Key heritage qualities of the 112-year-old station will be emphasised along

WOODS BAGOT BAGOT | Weston Williamson + Partners WOODS

with the introduction of new architecturally inspiring elements as part of a scheme that amplifies Centra l Station as a Sydney icon. Below ground, the atmospheric qualities of volume, surface, and natural light characterise the design scheme for the Central Station upgrade. With respect to existing hierarchies of arches and materials, the proposal has a clear relationship with Walter Vernon’s architecture of the station above. While the interfaces between old and new will be quite distinct, they will be architectural segues rather than jump-cuts. Signalling a step-change in the station’s functional, urban and cultural contributions to the city, the project will trigger much higher levels of people-movement and energy, and wider civic and commercial renewal.

Located in a dense urban area and above one of the highest-capacity stations, the the design was required to not only be commercially viable but of high quality architectural and urban design to enhance the urban landscape and public realm.
