Ways to Give
A Message from Ann Pollina, Head of School Westover opened with a wonderful student body of 205 students from 16 states and 17 countries. This year both students and faculty will focus their typical hard work, inspiration, and passionate dedication both in and out of the classroom around a school-wide theme for the year – human rights. We want to continue to graduate Westover women who are not only superbly trained intellectually but also capable of applying what they learned in our classrooms, fields, studios, and dorms to help make the world a better place. In times of economic uncertainty, the generous gifts on the pages that follow only solidify the theme of our “Inspiring Women: Campaign for Westover”. Westover continues to thrive because of the constancy of our alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends and their loyalty to Westover. As the graph below illustrates, this Campaign for Westover has allowed us not only to withstand a difficult economy, but to continue to grow. We would not be in this position of strength without your generous support . Westover works with vigor to empower the next generation of young women to know they can, and must, lead in ways both large and small to make this world better than they found it—and through your philanthropy to Westover you work in partnership with us to make all of this possible. On behalf of everyone here at Westover, I thank you!

In 2011, Alisa participated in a summer program in architecture at New York’s Parsons The New School for Design. 3
• Proceeds from the annual Junior Class Dorcas Fair resulted in $10,000 in grants being allocated by the Class of 2013 to 25 non-profit organizations, ranging from community organizations based in the Greater Waterbury area to international relief programs. • Westover’s Swim Team placed 1st in Division III competition at the Western New England Prep School Swimming Association Championships. The team placed 2nd in the Connecticut Independent School Athletic Conference meet for the third year in a row. • Riley Boeth ’13 was one of three finalists in the sixth annual High School Poetry Prize competition, sponsored by the Poetry Center at Smith College for sophomore and junior girls in New England. • Frances Delfin ’13 and Cailee Tallon ’14 participated in the prestigious Spring Future Artist Program offered by New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, a 12-week Saturday program for gifted high school students. The event was organized as a senior class project by Katie Hedberg ’12 and Hayley Wolcott ’12. 4
• Thirty-two Westover students earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards from the College Board in 2011. The AP Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated exceptional college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. • The Cross Country team won the Connecticut Independent School Athletic Conference championship for the second year in a row and finished second in the New England Division III championship – also for the second year in a row. Four members of the varsity team earned All New England. • Fourteen Westover students won awards in the 2012 Connecticut Scholastic Art Competition in Hartford, including six who received gold portfolio awards and two who received gold keys that were later entered at the national level of the competition. • The School’s Varsity Squash players completed another impressive run at the US Squash High School Nationals in 2012 with a second place. The team topped off its season with a second place at the 2012 New England Squash Division B Championships. • Of the 1.5 million students who take the SAT annually, only 16,000 (or 1%) qualify as National Merit Scholars. Virtually every year, including 2012, Westover has a qualifying student- this is twice the national average. 5
Inspiring Women: Campaign for Westover will strengthen our foundation and allow us to move boldly forward. Our campaign pillars are edowment and annual funds supporting community, programs, and daily life. With your support, we are securing and enhancing our intentional community of students and faculty and our unique, forward-thinking, leading-edge programs — the very heart of our school.
“Westover has historically led the field in alumnae participation in fund raising endeavors. This remains true for our current Campaign. Because of your generosity, it has been an extraordinary privilege for us to volunteer on behalf of ‘Inspiring Women: Campaign for Westover’. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” Martha Bacon Martin '65 and David Martin, Co-Chairs of the Inspiring Women Campaign
Community
Daily Life
At Westover, community is both real and essential: things happen because we see each other. Our community is dependent upon Westover’s size and the diverse interests, backgrounds, and talents of our students and faculty. We must have the ability to remain selective, attracting the right students and faculty to our school. Westover’s historic campus and state-of-the-art facilities are vital to this community, and to the success of our academic and co-curricular programs.
The Annual Fund, our “living endowment,” touches every aspect of the Westover experience. Strength in both dollars and participation is essential to delivering a world-changing education to each and every student.
endowment for faculty support, student support & campus stewardship & sustainability: $25 million Faculty Support: $12 million • Westover was able to sustain raises for faculty during difficult economic times when other schools were not only holding pay raises, but cutting back on faculty.
The Campaign is raising funds in the following areas:
• Because of the Campaign, Westover was able to both retain and hire teachers with advanced degrees: daily life
$10 million
community $25 million
programs
2008 – 2009 = 44%
2009-2010 = 50%
2010 – 2011 = 57%
2011 – 2012 = 61%
2012 – 2013 = 63%
Student Support: $8 million
$10 million
• Westover was able to continue to serve the increased needs of our current students and reached out to middle class families who were hardest hit by the recession. • With the completion of the Campaign, we will once again be able to provide greater access to a Westover education to our neediest applicants. Campus Stewardship & Sustainability: $5 million
Campaign Progress
$37M
$45M
• Westover has maintained our beautiful, 100 year old buildings with regular maintenance of slate roofs, brick pathways, and stucco walls. • Since the completion of the solar panels on the south side of Westover’s main, historic building and on the south facing roofs of the Fuller Athletic Center and the Louise Buckley Dillingham Performing Arts Center, Westover has generated 23% of its own electricity.
annual fund: $10 million Operations • Because of the generous support of the Annual Fund, Westover has updated and renovated several classrooms throughout our historic campus, including providing the technology necessary for our “flipped classrooms”. Support from Alumnae • Despite the difficult economic climate, the amount of each individual gift to the Annual Fund increased for the fiscal year 2011-2012.
Programs Through our programs, Westover provides girls with the qualities, skills, and fearlessness needed for the 21st century. Our students are artists and athletes, musicians and mathematicians, poets and physicists—sometimes all at the same time.
endowment for program support & unrestricted purposes: $10 million Signature Programs: $5 million • Because of the support of the campaign, Westover was able to not only get in on “the ground floor” as a founding member of the Online School for Girls but was also able to fund and develop courses through our partnership with the OSG. • This year, due to the development of continued commitment to our WISE program, 22 of the 44 new 9th graders are enrolled in WISE. Since its inception, over 100 young women have graduated from our WISE program. Unrestricted Purposes: $5 million • Because of the generosity of unrestricted gifts, Westover was able to be nimble enough to develop an additional film course; a new Foundations course for all new girls, which includes public speaking, computer literacy for 2012 and library research; and enhance and expand our global exchanges.

“One of the things I love best about teaching is that it is always changing. Every day is a chance to try something completely new, even when it is material I have taught before, a new opportunity to try to find a better, more exciting way to show students how incredible science is. Here at Westover, I am encouraged to constantly hone my craft, look for new methodolgies, broaden my teaching horizons, and venture into completely new territory.
Heather Mannella Nuzzo ’91 – Science Department Chair & ‘Teacher of the Future’
• Joined Westover’s Science Faculty in 1996 • Named Department Chair in 2011 • Board Member of the Online School for Girls (OSG) & Westover’s OSG Coordinator • University of Connecticut, B.S. in Biological Sciences • Quinnipiac University, M.A.T. in Secondary Science Education Neither her fellow teachers nor her students at Westover were surprised when the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) selected Heather as one of 20 teachers nationwide to be part of this year’s “Teachers of the Future” program. Heather’s breadth of knowledge in the field of science, her unflagging encouragement of her students as she challenges them to do their best, and her willingness to explore new technologies to enhance time-tested teaching techniques – all are on display in every class she teaches. Those qualities have helped inspire a number of her students to pursue careers in science, just as Heather herself was inspired more than two decades ago as a member of the Class of 1991. Since Westover co-founded the Online School for Girls in 2009, Heather has been instrumental in helping to guide the first-ever consortium of all-girls schools to offer online educational opportunities for girls across the United States. Now, as an NAIS Teacher of the Future, Heather will lead an online discussion forum designed to share innovative ideas and teaching techniques, helping to transform her peers – and, in turn, inspire future generations of students – far beyond the walls of Westover.

Finding Your Voice, Learning Through Others. Riley & Tom
“I was always one of those painfully shy people who was afraid of criticism. When I took ‘The Craft of Poetry’ with Tom last fall, it was the first time I ever showed anyone my poetry, except for my mom. Tom really helped me feel comfortable sharing my work and being ready to hear what other people thought of it.” Riley Boeth ’13 Finalist in the sixth annual High School Poetry Prize competition, sponsored by the Poetry Center at Smith College. Editor for the 2013 Lantern
Real learning occurs at Westover because the classroom environment encourages the open exchange of ideas, not just between teachers and students, but between students and their peers. Because classes are all girls, Tom said, students feel less constrained in what they have to say. “They are responding for themselves and for their peers,” he said. “There’s also a real acceptance of one another. Students who are shy soon feel comfortable to open up in a safe environment.” When Riley came to Westover as a new sophomore, she immediately noticed a difference in the classroom environment compared to that of her previous school. “There’s more give-and-take in classroom discussions. It’s okay when we get off topic and explore new ideas.”
Riley added, “Students here are more respectful of their teachers and of their fellow students. We are also less competitive.” Tom agreed. “There is a real generosity with our students,” he said. “They sincerely want their peers to do well.” At the same time, he added, the supportive atmosphere in classes such as the Craft of Poetry also allows students to develop the ability to critique one another’s work and to offer suggestions for improvement. “Students learn to see their writing as a kind of craft, which allows them to learn skills to write critically beyond just the ‘I like it, I don’t like it’ formula.” And, Riley noted, those skills carry over beyond the classroom. “The ability to listen and to respect what others have to say can be applied anywhere in our lives.”
“The reason I am a teacher is that I am a perpetual student. I love learning and I am always learning something new from my students. Very often in class discussions a student will say something that helps me see a poem in a new way, even if I have read it dozens of times before.

“I always feel proud of the continuing accomplishments of Westover’s students. The breadth of their opportunities seems endless.” Mary McCreath Godley ’38
$1 Million Gift for Faculty Support Both Mary McCreath Godley ’38 and her husband, Fred, have been loyal friends of their alma maters, Westover and Hotchkiss, throughout their lives. Their generosity has reached new heights with a recent decision to give both schools $1,000,000 each, in recognition of their belief in the importance of independent school education. Mary’s gift will provide support to the Annual Fund and will establish an endowed fund for faculty support to create long-term opportunities for professional development. This gift is the latest example of Mary’s lifelong support of Westover. Her generosity has helped to enrich the lives of students for decades. Mary’s most recent gift will continue her support of students in a wonderful way – by rewarding the faculty who teach them. • Mary’s generosity to Westover includes the landscaping of the Senior Garden, which was planted and maintained as a gift from Mary to the School three decades ago in memory of her sister Margaretta McCreath ’36. • Mary’s connections to Westover stretch back to the founding of the School; her mother, Margaretta Fleming McCreath, was a member of the Class of 1909 – the first students from St. Margaret’s School to attend classes at Westover during the spring it opened. In addition to her mother and sister, Mary’s other alumnae relatives include her two daughters – the late Margaretta Godley ’62 and Betsy Godley Spence ’67 – and another sister, the late Susanna McCreath Carter ’35, as well as an aunt and four cousins. • An Over, Mary was the Second Head of Glee while at Westover, a member of the Dramatic Club, the French Club, and played field hockey. • As a Westover volunteer, she has served as a class agent, class secretary, and reunion gift chair.

Westover’s Endowment: Diverse Investing Strategies for a Secure Future Three years ago, the Westover Finance Committee decided that it would be wise to hire an independent investment consultant to help guide our endowment investment decisions. Westover’s endowment had been invested with two investment houses, Westwood and CommonFund. Both are excellent managers, well-known in the endowment world. However, with the markets in turmoil after the economic downturn in 2007-2008, the Committee decided that it would be prudent to engage an independent consultant who would look at the universe of investment options and help us become more broadly diversified. The Committee met with eight independent advisors and was unanimous in their decision to select Clearbrook Investment Consulting from Stamford, Connecticut. We liked Clearbrook’s investment philosophy, as well as the clarity and transparency of their approach. We felt we could work well with Clearbrook’s consultants because they understood our needs and investment goals and demonstrated a genuine interest in Westover and our mission. As an example of the transparency of their approach, Clearbrook helped us understand and anticipate shifts in our investments, by creating a road map that defined recommended changes in our investments over a 12-18 month horizon. They also explained the market conditions that would support or change their recommendations. Since we started working with Clearbrook, the endowment has become more diversified. Balancing risk and return, we have reduced our overall equity exposure and invested in funds that are less sensitive to market volatility such as credit, income-oriented, and absolute return funds. Despite a tumultuous period in the markets, we have been very pleased with the endowment’s performance and the guidance that Clearbrook has provided. Among a universe of educational endowments and foundations, Westover’s endowment has performed better than other institutions across all endowment sizes. The Committee is confident that our endowment is well-positioned for long-term growth during a sustained period of economic uncertainty. Although no one can predict the future performance of markets, we believe that we have a well-constructed portfolio of investments that, in conjunction with a strong campaign and periodic adjustments, will support Westover’s financial requirements for the foreseeable future. Edith Glassmeyer Heilman '65 Member of the Board of Trustees Chair, Investment Committee

“The Annual Fund is a vital source of revenue that supports everything from new athletic uniforms to renovations of the Virginia House art studio to financial aid that makes it possible for another young girl to become a Westover student. The Annual Fund is more than that; it is a testament to the loyalty and generosity of Westover’s unparalleled alumnae. Each gift made, each phone call placed or thank you note written from a Class Agent or member of the Board of Governors is a reaffirmation of the value of Westover today more than ever.” Maura Tansley ’00 Alumnae Association Board ofGovernors Annual Fund Chair

“After a great weekend at the Board of Governors’ meeting on campus, I am even more enthused about how important giving to our Annual Fund is for the School and the students. We can all remember wonderful stories about friends and teachers during our time at Westover, and today those stories and more are being experienced by a wonderful group of girls. Our gifts are what make so many of those stories and experiences happen just as someone else’s gifts did for us! Please know that every gift counts and is immensely important.” Hilary Carpenter Lynch ’85 Alumnae Association Governor Campaign Executive Committee Member Annual Fund Co-Chair

“Giving to the Annual Fund gives me great pleasure and reminds me of my precious and pivotal time at Westover. Westover showed me the path to creativity, leadership and authenticity. My Westover years allowed me to see who I really was and encouraged me to become my best. To give back to the Westover community means I can perhaps help our future generations have the same blessings that I have.” Brooke Brown Barzun ’90

“Westover gave me a great education, confidence in myself, and the desire to continue to learn all life long. More than 50 years later, it gave my granddaughter, Emily Jackson ’12, those very same qualities. As I sit here on a rainy day, keeping warm in my Class of 2012 Westover sweater, I cannot imagine not supporting Westover through my gifts to the Annual Fund.” Penny Jackson Trask ’58

“Westover planted within me the seeds of wisdom, strength, and compassion and, watered by every e-mail, text message, and phone call from my Westover friends, those seeds continue to grow and help me live my happiest life. At Westover, I was in the Dance Ensemble, played handbells, and was the head of Model UN. As with most things at Westover, participating in these activities was a chance for me and my friends to try new skills, to fail, to succeed, and, because we were all in it together, not to be afraid. As the years pass and I realize that I really did not have it all figured out at eighteen, the skills and lessons that I learned at Westover, and the support of my Westover friends, grow increasingly important to me. Every academic and professional opportunity in my life is a direct result of Westover’s academic program, but without the inner strength instilled at Westover and the encouragement of the friends whom I met there, I would not have the courage or support to take advantage of those opportunities. I give to the Westover Annual Fund not only for the benefit of the girls who are lucky enough to attend but also for the benefit of all those thousands of people whose lives have been touched by a Westover woman. The lessons that Westover teaches girls about change, friendship, community, and generosity are shared with everyone in our lives. By giving to the Annual Fund, I hope to promote a feeling of confidence, friendship, and generosity of spirit not only within the Westover community, but outside of it as well. As a young alumna, supporting Westover is one of the easiest and most tangible ways to practice generosity and to demonstrate our gratitude for everything that we’ve gained from Westover. As young alumnae, it becomes all too easy to look at giving to Westover as something that we will do when we are older and more financially stable and secure. But by even giving a small amount to Westover, we not only help the girls who follow us, we also say thank you to our parents and families who made sacrifices that allowed us to attend Westover; to our teachers and coaches, who taught us and instilled confidence in us; and to our friends, who were there for us when we were fourteen and who are still there for us. Giving to Westover is also a way to say thank you to ourselves for being open to learning and for having the strength and confidence just to be ourselves. By giving to the Annual Fund, I hope to ensure that the Westover experience is available for future generations of girls and that the Westover community remains strong. Being a part of a timeless community of shared experiences creates an almost mystical sense of support, but that community is also a very real network of women who mentor and guide one another in countless ways. I give to Westover to make sure that the network continues to grow larger and stronger every year. Katie Aldrich ’00 47

There are Many Ways to Give to Westover! If you think making a substantial gift to Westover is beyond your reach, please take the time to read about some creative ways to give to Westover. You may be surprised!
Gifts of Cash
Please make your checks payable to Westover School and send them directly to the Development Office. You may also make credit card gifts on our secure on-line giving site at westoverschool.org/giving, or by phone or mail.
Matching Gifts
Many employers and companies will match gifts made by an employee or a spouse. Inquire with your employer today!
Securities
Securities are stocks and bonds. Direct gifts of appreciated securities offer one huge advantage to you as a donor – you get an income tax deduction for the full market value of the security when you give it to Westover, regardless of your cost basis. You do not have to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciated value of the security, as you would were you to sell the security and then give the proceeds to Westover, or use them for any other purpose.
Bequests
A bequest to Westover is a statement in your will that you wish to leave something to Westover, usually described as an amount, a specific asset or percentage of your estate. A bequest is something everyone who wishes to support Westover can do, with no current cost and at a level of their own choosing. Though simple, bequests are powerful giving tools.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you and Westover. In exchange for a gift of $10,000 or more, Westover agrees to pay you, and/or other beneficiaries you choose, a fixed amount every quarter for life. Payments are guaranteed and amounts are fixed. There can be no more than two beneficiaries, usually the donor and her spouse.
Life Insurance
Many people have life insurance policies – either fully paid for or not – that are less important to them than they once were. To make a gift of an existing policy, you must change the owner and beneficiary of the policy to Westover. When you do, you immediately qualify for an income tax deduction for the policy’s cost basis or cash surrender value, whichever is less.
For more information on any of these gift opportunities, please call Paul Sutherland, Director of Planned Giving at 203.577.4590 or email, psutherland@westoverschool.org Some BEQUEST INTENTIONS by living alumnae COUNT towards Inspiring Women: Campaign for Westover! In order to expand opportunities for more Westover alumnae participation in our current Campaign, in October 2011 the Board of Trustees amended the existing Inspiring Women: Campaign for Westover counting policy to include some bequest intentions by living alumnae. Accordingly, if you are 80 years old or more, OR you will reach your 80th birthday on or before December 31, 2014, the full face value of any bequest you make to Westover (that is verified in writing) will count towards your gift to Westover’s Campaign! Also, if you have your 50th or 55th reunion between now and 2014 the full face value of any verified bequest you make during your reunion year will count towards your gift to Westover’s Campaign.
