How sheep are bringing the “farm” to solar farms in Ogden

Sheep and solar energy. Until recently, I never would have imagined how these two very different things could be linked. That is, until Town Clerk Noelle Burley, Assistant Building Inspector Sue Duggan and I took an impromptu workday field trip to a local solar site on Whittier Road to meet with a farmer who is revolutionizing the way we utilize land for both agriculture and industrial purposes in the town.

When we arrived at the solar field, we were greeted by Olesya Haze, owner of TIM Farms, and her flock of sheep. Within the confines of the perimeter fences, the flock happily devoured grass and other vegetation growing amid the solar panels, not the least bit concerned by the onlooking spectators.

It’s called solar grazing, also known as agrivoltaics, the practice of simultaneous use of land for solar panels and agriculture. TIM Farms launched in 2018, when the owners moved to Ogden and pur-

chased their first sheep. Since then, their flock has grown exponentially, and they have begun selling their stock and whole lamb to the local community and beyond.

With an eye for pasture, they noticed all the unutilized vegetation within solar fields as prime landscape for sheep grazing. They contacted the owners of these solar sites and proposed a collaborative approach that would bring the “farm” to the solar farm. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and their flock now provides vegetation management services at the neighboring solar site on Whittier Road.

Overgrown vegetation can shade and damage solar panels, so these sites must be regularly maintained. The standard mowing approach is both costly and tedious, and the land beneath the panels serves no real purpose.

That’s where the sheep come in. They consume the grass, weeds, tree seedlings and other veg-

etation, keeping the panels in peak operation. In turn, the panels provide shade on hot summer days, and shelter from the rain. The sheep also play a vital role in improving the soil, echoing the success of strip mine reclamation programs that restore degraded lands.

TIM Farms solar sheep project is among the first in our region and I’m sure it won’t be the last. It truly demonstrates the potential of combining energy with agriculture and maximizing land use for everyone’s benefit. It’s a win for the sheep, the farmers, and the owners of the solar fields.

Thank you to Olesya for allowing us to come by for a visit and for teaching us about this fascinating method. It’s a good day when you learn something new and get to feed alfalfa to a flock of sheep. We look forward to visiting again soon.

Spencerport CSD teacher arrested

Ian Milam, a math teacher at Spencerport’s Cosgrove Middle School, has been arrested and is being charged with crimes involving the production, receipt, possession of child pornography, and transfer of obscene material to a minor.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan K. McGuire, who is handling the case, stated that on May 3, 2023, the Greece Police Department received a report that a sexually explicit video was discovered on a 12-year-old girl’s phone. The girl allegedly received the video from her friend, an 11-yearold girl. Subsequent investigation determined that Snapchat accounts with usernames “matteckler” and “mikeywikey37” had been contacting the two minor girls.

Search warrants traced the materials to defendant Milam, who allegedly posed as a high school student in the Spencerport School District and sent sexually explicit photos and videos to the 11-year-old. Milam is also accused of manipulating her into sending a photo via Snapchat of herself in a tank top. Investigators also uncovered numerous sexually explicit conversations between “matteckler” or “mikeywikey37” and other Snapchat users who appeared to be minors. Milam is also accused of coercing a 12-year-old girl to send sexually explicit photos to him.

Milam made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark W. Pedersen on August 9 and is being held pending a detention hearing on August 14.

on administrative leave and had his access revoked to all district electronic resources and buildings. Further, he has been directed not to have any contact with SCSD students, staff, or families.

In a letter to the district, Spencerport Superintedent Ty Zinkiewich said, “The district was never given any reason to suspect illegal or inappropriate behavior by Milam in any way. A background check and employment screening are required prior to hiring. His screening included a search of the New York State Sex Offender Registry. That screening came through with the approval from the State Education Department.”

The district is working with investigators to determine whether any Spencerport students may be involved, and is encouraging families with students who may have had him as a teacher or advisor to ask about their online activity.

Zinkiewich said the district has launched an internal review, and that any official release of information will come from law enforcement. “Our priority will be to our students and maintaining the integrity of the FBI investigation,” he said.

The Department of Justice also reminds the community that the fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Fundraiser planned to benefit equine therapy program

A Food Truck Rodeo, Cornhole Tournament and Vendor Fair will be held Sunday, August 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hamlin VFW, 1739 Lake Road, Hamlin. The event benefits Before the Last Call, an equine therapy program for first responders and veterans that is based in Kendall.

Team registration for the Cornhole Tournament begins at 11 a.m. Bags fly and the fair begins at noon. The event also includes a Chinese Auction, 50/50 raffles, pony rides, and more.

All proceeds raised go directly towards helping Before the Last Call provide equine therapy free of charge to our nation’s and community’s heroes.

Volunteer to transcribe books into Braille

The Spencerport Lions Braille Service will be offering Braille Transcription classes at the Gates/ Spencerport Ambulance building at 116 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport. Classes will start on Thursday, September 14, 2023 and will meet weekly, Thursday mornings, through May.

There is a nominal cost for the course, however the student will be provided with an instructor, instruction materials, Braille Writer and Braille paper. Students should plan on approximately two hours of homework per day as they work towards certification as a transcriber by the Library of Congress. Transcribers can then work at home transcribing requested reading materials for the blind.

Ongoing support and encouragement will be provided at weekly meetings, where volunteers come together to proofread each other’s work.

Genesee Country Village & Museum, in Mumford, will dig into the musical roots and folk traditions of New York State during the annual Fiddlers’ Fair & Making Music Weekend, coming up on Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will enjoy a musical experience that brings together musicians on multiple stages for a weekend of nonstop entertainment. Settle in to hear the variety of performers, enjoy food and drink, explore the 19th-century Historic Village, and spend the day immersed in live musical performances. Explore the musical roots of New York State

Explore the musical stylings brought to New York State by laborers on the Erie Canal, listen in on a discussion around cultural expression, racial stereotyping, and appropriation involved in 19th-century minstrel shows, see a luthier crafting stringed instruments on site and learn about his process, enjoy a lively demonstration of Irish bagpipes (uillean pipes) and learn about the role this instrument played in shaping Irish-American music, explore development of the American Blues in New York State, and more.

The festival will feature mainstays of New York State’s folk and historical music community. Special presentations include, but are not limited to: Tim Ball (“Upstate Crossroads,” an exploration of fiddle tunes from across New York State), Ted McGraw (learn about the relevance of accordions in our local musical history), and more. Conference offers whole-life development for women

Dr. LaShunda Leslie-Smith will be hosting the biannual EPIC Women’s Conference taking place August 18 and 19 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The two-day series of workshops is a “whole-life conference” that will bring in hundreds of women from all over the region to take time to invest in themselves. The themes of the conference are Esteem, Passion, Inspiration and Courage.

The conference will offer workshops focusing on spirituality, professional development and lifestyle. More than 20 workshops are scheduled over two days and include topics such as getting started in the real estate

business, understanding the power of Godly friendships, and more. There will be industry professionals and leaders presenting the workshops and keynote sessions, including Dr. LeslieSmith, Pastor Amanda Williams and Pastor Darla Edlin.

Close to 250 women attended the 2018 EPIC Women’s Conference and it received very positive reception. The 2020 virtual event garnered nearly 100 attendees. Late registration is open while space remains with the option to buy single-person passes, two-person passes, and a church group rate for 10 people.

“The reason I developed this confer-

ence is because I do believe it’s important for us as women, as individuals, to really invest in ourselves,” Leslie-Smith said. “Not just for our job, but really exploring opportunities to learn more about the things we’re passionate about.”

Passes include access to three main keynote sessions, six breakout sessions, networking opportunities and all-day access to the Vendor Village (exhibit hall), featuring local and women-owned businesses. Hotel accommodations for guests will be available at both the Hilton Garden Inn - Downtown and the Hyatt Regency Rochester - Downtown.

Local 4-H youth experience Japanese culture

Twenty-seven New York State families have begun the adventure of sharing their homes with a young person from Japan through the 4-H Youth Development program. The NYS 4-H Japanese Exchange program is an initiative of the New York State 4-H Office at Cornell University, in cooperation with County Cornell Cooperative Extension offices around the state. The

25 Japanese youth, ages 13 to 17, and their two adult chaperones arrived at the Syracuse International Airport on July 23 and connected with host families from all corners of New York state. The Japanese youth have been staying with host families who have a child of a similar age and will prepare to head home to Japan on August 18. The host families are located in 22 NY counties from Western NY, the Finger Lakes region, the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley.

In Monroe County, the Rimkus family is hosting one of the Japanese delegates, Shunka Inagaki. Daughter Hannah shared, “It’s so much fun to show her around Rochester! From going to the beach to bike rides we have been having a great time! We are excited to take her to Seabreeze and on other day trips around the area.” Shunka bonded with the family right away. Shunka’s host mother, Amy Rimkus, also expressed that it has been fun to hear about Shunka’s life in Japan as well. “It’s been a way to learn about her culture and way of life and share a little about ours. I would recommend this program to anyone who is open to a new adventure!”

The New York State program is supported by a National nonprofit

organization affiliated with 4-H called States’ 4-H International, based in Seattle, Washington. States’ 4-H International works with 4-H programs in nearly 20 states to coordinate inbound and outbound cultural exchanges ranging from one month to 10 months between 4-H youth and youth from Japan, South Korea, Norway, Costa Rica and many more countries. The 30-day summer Japanese program will provide an opportunity for nearly 550 Japanese youth to experience life in the United States this summer. She was predeceased by her parents, Gerald and Florence Whelehan; her husband, Roy Kanous (2015); and her grandson, Mason Kanous (2021). Tom and his son, Marc, raised Appaloosa horses and showed them. Tom was a member of the Barre Town Board, Board member of Orleans County Cooperative Extension and was involved with the horse program.

In New York, Larry landed a job as a broker on Wall Street that ultimately led him to Rochester where he spent his career as an owner at Brighton Securities on Monroe Avenue. He loved to play golf and spent most summers on the course at Ridgemont Country Club. He also loved to travel.

In his leisure, he enjoyed planting flowers and vegetable gardening, enjoyed cutting wood, riding his 4-wheeler, riding his John Deere gator around his property, treasure hunting and anything Halloween.

Marilyn downplayed her sports prowess, but the family always said that if she had been born at a later time, Marilyn would surely have been in some professional sports league. She hit a hole-in-one at the Churchville West course, had frequent newspaper mentions with her bowling and softball scores, was playing golf with her buddies well into her cancer journey, and in her upper years, was still flying down the ski slopes. One of Marilyn’s most treasured activities was volunteering at St. John’s Nursing Home where, for many years, she was a mealtime and activities companion. She took the seniors on fun outings to Highland Park and other local venues. Marilyn had a ready laugh, a warm heart, and found joy in gathering her many friends and family near.

Merton Williams Middle School makes clean drinking water possible for Ugandan school

The rainwater collection system that Merton Williams Middle School students and staff sponsored this spring has been completed and is transforming the lives of people in Uganda. Because of Merton Williams’ support, clean water is now available for Lutembe Umea Primary School’s 12 staff and 473 students.

Previously, students and staff fetched water from an off-site borehole well. By bringing a rainwater collection system to facility grounds, Ugandan Water Project estimates that up to 1.50 miles of walking and 15.17 hours of collection time per day was eliminated for these students and staff.

Spencerport mentalist Anthony Presciutti will be appearing at this year’s Rochester Fringe Festival. He is performing one show only on Thursday, September 14, from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. at CenterStage Theatre at the JCC Hart Theater in Brighton.

Anthony has been performing on stage and traveling across the United States and Canada since he was 17 years old and a student at Spencerport High School. Now, at 23, Anthony has an all-new show with some never-before-seen routines, including his humorous “mind-reading machine” that will broadcast the thoughts of a lucky guest up on the big screen for everyone to see. Anthony has transitioned over the years from a magician to more of a mentalist,

where he messes with the mind and makes crazy on-the-spot predictions and revelations that seem impossible to the average person. His show at the Fringe Festival will consist of adult humor, suspense, and amazement.

Longtime Brockport firefighter receives award

Brockport Fire District Firefighter Alan C. Way was recently named Firefighter of the Year with over 50 years of service by the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association (WNYVFA).

Way joined the Brockport Fire Department in 1963 shortly before serving his country in the United States Navy. Upon his return from active duty on the USS Randolph CVS, he continued his service to the community in the fire department and in a variety of ways – volunteering at his church, at Lakeside Hospital and teaching first aid and driver safety when called upon.

He has become a well-known fire department volunteer at the local schools with his many years of dedicated service coordinating fire prevention activities. He has also been very active in the Brockport Exempts Club, the Brockport Fire Police, and

a variety of fire service organizations across the county and state.

It is for these reasons and many more that Alan Way was nominated for this distinction. He was selected and received the award on July 29, 2023 from WNYVFA.

Concerned about variance granted in Hamlin

There were two public hearings on a variance to grant Chickens and Quail for Nathan Pacelli at 61 Hillcrest Drive, Hamlin. The neighbors are totally opposed to this. There are still remaining code violations on this property and Nathan is the son of the current building inspector, Cheryl Pacelli. He was granted a variance for Quail and Chickens.

In Hamlin’s code it clearly states that code enforcement officers cannot have anything to do with this. Cheryl Pacelli did not excuse herself from the first hearing, but did so for the second hearing. What’s up with this? Based on the facts, how could the Zoning Board grant this variance?

Steve Baase, the Town Supervisor, is well aware of the situation and has not yet rectified this. Incidentally,

Steve Baase is the nephew of Norm Baase, the Zoning Board Chairman. Hopefully there will be a fair resolution soon to this injustice.

The Kendall Community gathered for a community worship at the town gazebo on Sunday, August 6. Bozza Pasta moves to new Greece location

Bozza Pasta, a manufacturer of authentic homemade pastas and Italian specialties, outgrew their 4,000 square feet Hilton location, and recently relocated to the Elm Ridge Center in Greece. Their new facility is quadruple the size of the former location, with 8,000 square feet dedicated solely to the production of gluten free products, as well as a freezer that is seven times the size of their previous location.

Bozza Pasta is owned by Michael and Marisa Bozza of Hilton. In 2019 they added a partner, Jake Fabry, who is responsible for the commercial sales division.

In 2013, the Bozzas began making pasta for farm markets and smaller restaurants. Michael is originally from Gragnano, Italy, and is the third generation of pasta makers in his family. In 2016, they moved their operation to Hilton to keep up with the demand of the wholesale accounts that they serve. “In 2018, people began knocking at our door asking to buy our pasta products for their homes,” Marisa said. This led Bozza Pasta to create a retail line of pastas to offer to the public. As both wholesale and retail demand surpassed their capabilities in Hilton, they knew it was time to grow. They closed the doors to their Hilton location at the end of July 2023, and will be opening their brand-new facility to the public on August 26, 2023.

The new facility is quadruple the size of Bozza’s previous location in Hilton. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The retail pasta shop will carry 70 varieties of Italian specialty foods, 15 varieties of ravioli, a large line of gluten free pastas, sauces, desserts, olive oils, glazes, and breads. During the Grand Opening, the first 100 visitors will receive a free pound of pasta. There will be live music, giveaways, and tours of the new production facility.

plans to open their newest division at the Elm Ridge location, called “Fast Casual.” Customers can stop in and pick their pasta, protein, sauce, and toppings for either dine-in or “to-go” bowls.

Brockport CSD appoints Cybersecurity Coordinator

Brockport Central School District has appointed Garrett Hotchkiss as Cybersecurity Coordinator. The appointment was approved by the Board of Education during the Board Meeting on July 14 and became effective on July 17.

Hotchkiss has worked in the Brockport IT department

since December 2015. During that time, he has worked in a variety of capacities including microcomputer technician, network technician and, most recently, senior network technician. He has a bachelor’s degree in Information Security and Forensics, as well as certifications in Microsoft and Comp Tia Security+.

Hotchkiss brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks.

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Brockport Fire District on August 7, 2023

Resolution to expend from the Brockport Fire District Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund for the replacement of the Boiler System at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport NY 14420.

WHEREAS, pursuant to General Municipal Law §6-g, the Brockport Fire District (Fire District), Towns of Sweden and Clarkson, County of Monroe, State of New York, did establish the “Brockport Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund” a capital reserve fund to finance all or part of the cost of acquisition or the construction, reconstruction, remodeling, refurbishment, acquisition or upgrading of existing Fire District buildings or facilities; to pay or provide for structural improvements or to pay or provide for upgrades to the replacement of the HVAC systems, security, smoke and fire protection services for those buildings or facilities. Fire District facilities include the Fire District training grounds.

WHEREAS there is a need to replace the original Boiler System at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport, NY 14420. The current boiler system is the original system when the building was constructed in the early 1970’s and is no longer energy efficient and it has become difficult to find replacement parts for repairs.

WHEREAS the above-mentioned work is to be financed from monies in the above-referenced “Brockport Fire District Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund”, and it is the purpose of said capital reserve fund to fund the replacement of the Boiler System at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport NY 14420.

NOW BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Brockport Fire District is hereby authorized to expend from the “Brockport Fire District Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund” an amount not to exceed $300,000 for the purpose of the replacement of the Boiler System at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport NY 14420 and,

BE IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution is subject to a permissive referendum and shall not take effect until 30 days has elapsed after its adoption, or unless approved at a special election of the qualified voters of the Brockport Fire District after a proper petition calling for such special election is filed with the Secretary of the Brockport Fire District within the time permitted by law.

RESOLUTION 2023-51

Purchase and Installation of Cameras at Brockport Fire District Station 1

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Brockport Fire District on August 7, 2023.

WHEREAS, pursuant to General Municipal Law §6g, the Brockport Fire District did establish the Brockport Communications Equipment Capital Reserve Fund, a Capital Reserve Fund to finance the cost of acquisition of new or used, upgraded, additional, and replacement communications equipment, including base station radios, vehicle radios, portable radios and pagers, for communication purposes for the Brockport Fire District and in addition to assist the Brockport Fire District with the expense and cost of integrating with the new communication system implemented by Monroe County and to assure the Brockport Fire District is in compliance with this new system.

WHEREAS, there is a need to complete Phase 2 of the installation of cameras at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport, NY 14420.

WHEREAS, the above-mentioned acquisition is to be financed from monies in the above-referenced “Brockport Fire District Communications Equipment Capital Reserve Fund”, and it is the purpose of said Capital Reserve Fund to fund the acquisition and purchase of such equipment,

NOW BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Brockport Fire District is hereby authorized to expend from the “Brockport Fire District Communications Equipment Capital Reserve Fund” an amount not to exceed $20,000 for the purpose of the purchase and installation of additional cameras at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport, NY 14420 to complete Phase 2 of the installation of cameras for security and safety of the Brockport Fire District personnel, apparatus, and equipment stored at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport, NY 14420.

BE IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution is subject to a permissive referendum and shall not take effect until 30 days has elapsed after its adoption, or unless approved at a special election of the qualified voters of the Brockport Fire District after a proper petition calling for such special election is filed with the Secretary of the Brockport Fire District within the time permitted by law.

The adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly put to a vote and upon roll call the vote was as follows:

Dan rubinstein, a writer, adventurer, and paddleboarder from Ottawa, Canada, camped overnight on the banks of the Erie Canal in Spencerport on Sunday, July 30. rubinstein is on a paddleboard journey that began in June 2023 and is expected to go through September 2023. The trip will take him from his home in Ottawa to Montreal, New York City, and Toronto, and then back to his home via the Ottawa pier, St. Lawrence river, richelieu river, Lake Champlain, Champlain Canal, Hudson river, Erie Canal, Niagara river, Lake Ontario, and rideau river.

r ubinstein calls his journey “Water Borne – A stand-up paddleboarding pilgrimage through the blue space next door.” rubinstein is writing a book about his paddleboard experience. He says, “My book, rooted in this experience, will be about the importance of immersing ourselves in ‘blue space’ and deepening our relationship with water for a wide range of reasons.”

He is meeting and interviewing people – planned and impromptu – along the way, asking questions about the waters where they are and what these places mean to their lives.

rubinstein says that, to him, paddleboarding is: “A unique way to interact with both natural and human aquatic

ecosystems that can help connect us to this vital natural resource that we often ignore or neglect.” He says standing upright on the water and moving with or against the flow allows him to see his surroundings in a new way.

Water Borne will be rubinstein’s second book. His first book, Born to Walk, details another of his passions. He said, “The humble act of putting one foot in front of the other transcends age, geography, culture, and class and is one of the most economical and environmentally responsible modes of transit. Yet with our modern fixation on speed, this healthy pedestrian activity has been largely left behind.”

rubinstein traveled throughout the U.S., U.K., and Canada to walk with people who saw the act not only as a form of transportation and recreation but also as a path to a better world. He said, “There are no magicbullet solutions to modern epidemics like obesity, anxiety, alienation, and climate change. But what if there is a simple way to take a step in the right direction?” Born to Walk explores how far this ancient habit can take us, how much repair is within range, and guarantees that you’ll never again take walking for granted.
