Welcome to West Weddings Summer 2013

The traditional ‘wedding season’ is now upon us, where feathered hats are dusted off and diaries fill up with the dates of (hopefully) sunshine-soaked weddings up and down the country. Summer is a lovely time to say your I dos, and this edition of West Weddings is packed full of tips to help you get the most from the season. We got to pretend we were in a Jane Austen novel for the day with our cover photoshoot at Eastington Park. This gorgeous venue in Gloucestershire was the perfect setting for our two couples to re-enact scenes from Austen’s most famous book, Pride and Prejudice, honouring the 200th anniversary of its publication. We had a great team of local suppliers to help bring the book to life, including Anne Harding, Pretty Amazing Cakes and Bridezillas, with the day being recorded by the talented Eleanor Saunders of Interlace Photography. Elsewhere, Samantha Merritt celebrates summer by imagining the perfect seasonal wedding on p.8-9, Megan McGinn shares the wonderful world of wedding blogging on p.64, and Mike Gartside talks to photographer Mark Simmons on p.69-70 about getting the best from your wedding photography. There are also our regular features including beauty bible, in and out, gown gallery and a host of lovely real weddings to inspire you. We love to hear from you, so please do let us know your thoughts on the magazine: email us on westweddings@venue.co.uk, tweet us on @ westweddings or find us on Facebook.

MOVE OVER

Jennifer Lopez! Spring 2013 saw the launch of Host Event Management, a professional, friendly wedding and event planning company run by Olivia Mills. Olivia was instrumental in setting up Old Down Manor in Gloucestershire, an exclusive, renovated Victorian manor, which has gone on to become one of the area’s most prestigious wedding and fine events venues. Olivia still organises weddings and events for Old Down, but has had a long term ambition to be able to extend her expertise to clients looking for some assistance creating their dream occasion. “Each client is special to me,” says Olivia. “I have developed this business because I absolutely love what I do. Making people happy by delivering a wonderful, memorable occasion based on the customer’s original vision – there is nothing quite like it!” Hiring a planner can save you money, reduce stress levels and ensure your day goes without a hitch. Host Event Management creates bespoke packages based on clients’ individual requirements and budgets. Olivia will ensure that you are guided at every step of the way, turning your ideas into reality. Services include on the day co-ordination, full and partial planning, venue finding, supplier sourcing, venue management and the final stretch, with prices starting from just £25 per hour. GOOD CAUSE In our spring edition we reported on a very special wedding fair that was taking place in March, organised by the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation. This is an organisation which helps to plan weddings for those with terminal illnesses, and which was set up by Naomi Thomas, who herself has secondary stage breast cancer. The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation’s first ever fair was organised by Jo Robbins from wedding and event planners Jo & Co, who wanted to help the Foundation after hearing Naomi’s story and her determination to help people in the same situation. The fair was an immense success with £11,150 raised for the foundation and 124 wedding dresses donated for use at future weddings. “I am overwhelmed by its success,” says Jo. “The money we raised and the number of dresses donated is beyond anything I thought would be generated.” It’s not too late to help the foundation – you can donate dresses or suits to be passed on to other couples. Jo has also been asked to be the Area Fundraising Co-ordinator, so if you have any ideas for fundraising or would like to hold an event to support the foundation, please get in touch with her.

SUMMER Be brave with your choices for that special summer wedding, says Samantha Merritt.

S

ummer is a time for enjoyment and warmth. Hopefully the unpredictable sun will be shining for at least a few weeks this season, enough time for you to squeeze in a beautiful sunshine-filled wedding. This is the time of year to think outside the traditional wedding box and make some daring decisions to create a truly special day.

BACK GARDEN BEAUTIFUL

A simple way to cut half the stress and cost of the planning stage is taking out the venue and reception hire altogether. No, we haven’t gone crazy! If you’re lucky enough to have a relative with a few spare acres why not take the wedding to them? It keeps the intimacy of the whole day, and celebrating your marriage in the garden you once played in as a child holds some nostalgia that a hotel can’t compete with. The Willows and Wetlands centre near Taunton have talented willow workers who can craft you a wedding archway. W: WWW.ENGLISHWILLOWBASKETS.CO.UK

BBQ SEASON

Known for our great British BBQs, it’s a great way to cure your guests’ hunger. Get the charcoal lit and start grilling those sausages and burgers, as there’s no better summer smell then the smoky scent a BBQ leaves in the air. Not all your guests will want something as filling as a burger on a hot summer’s day, though, so skewer some fresh fruit and vegetables for a light and healthy substitute.

STAY AT HOME

A cheaper alternative to going abroad for your honeymoon is staying right where you are. Summer is the perfect season for you to indulge in the delights of Cornish ice cream

or hop over to explore the beautiful castles in Wales. After all that planning and stress you’ll be happy relaxing anywhere, so have a look at what the UK has to offer - you might be pleasantly surprised.

SUIT SURPRISE

Brides can wear shorter dresses so why do men have to wear the conventional dark suit? We’re not saying go for a multi coloured suit; instead, get rid of the suit altogether! Grooms need to feel comfortable, and sweat patches are not a good look on one of the most important days of your life. A shirt and trousers can still look formal with a tie, or if you are sold on the traditional suit, then keep it light with thinner, softer fabrics such as cotton and linen.

DON’T FORGET THE SUN SCREEN!

If you’re going to be having pictures outside – and if the sun is out why wouldn’t you? – you need to make sure your skin is protected. You won’t have time to be reapplying every hour and consequently smudging your pristine make up. Make sure to use foundation with SPF already in it, as no bride wants lobster photos. Bobbi Brown provides a foundation with great coverage and SPF included. W: WWW.BOBBIBROWN.CO.UK

MIX THINGS UP

Try something new when it comes to booking the bar for the reception. Chilled cocktails such as gin fizz will be a refreshing aperitif for your guests, or to celebrate the best of the season try a strawberry daiquiri. For non-alcoholic drinks, iced elderflower cordial is a great alternative to Champagne, and smoothies are always a hit and will offer your guests a memorable surprise.

WINNER!

Vintage GOODIES The third Bristol Vintage wedding fair took place on Sunday 10th March at the Clifton Pavilion in Bristol Zoo. Over 750 visitors came through the doors to be greeted with an array of suppliers offering vintage and vintage-inspired products. Featured suppliers included Pretty Amazing Cakes, the Little Wedding Helper, Chocolate Delores and Your Unique Scrapbook. Ali Cook, the co-founder of Bristol Vintage, said: “We had our third successful year for the Bristol Vintage Wedding Fair.

Lots of brides-to-be celebrated Mother’s Day by coming along with their mums and our fabulous exhibitors made sure everyone had a wonderful day with something to suit every bride!” For further information about the day and to see more photos, check out the fair’s website, which also contains a directory of all exhibitors from the last three years. Jayne Harnaman had a Monday to remember when she found out she was the winner of the West Weddings/Special Days and Appletons ‘win a wedding dress’ competition! Jayne, who lives in Brislington, Bristol, was over the moon to find out that she had won a £1,000 wedding dress from Special Day and Appletons, the Keynshambased boutique. “You enter competitions like this but you never expect to win,” Jayne said. “I can’t wait to tell everyone!” Jayne and her fiancé Tony are getting married in July 2014. They are having an intimate ceremony for close family and friends at the Berkeley Square Hotel in Bristol, followed by a larger reception at the South Bristol Sport Ground. From her research so far, Jayne likes dresses with mermaid silhouettes, but says that she is definitely open to suggestions from the knowlegeable staff at Special Day and Appletons. We are running the competition again so if you’re feeling lucky like Jayne, turn to p.19 for your chance to win!

LOVE + MARRIAGE = HORSE + CARRIAGE! If you’ve always dreamed of making your way to your wedding in a horsedrawn carriage, just like Cinderella and the other fairy princesses, then Rushmere Farm Carriages can help bring that dream to life. Based in Coleford in the Forest of Dean, owners Adrian and Margaret Lander have a number of carriages available for hire, including a Landau (used in this edition’s cover shoot), a Victoria and a Clarence. Not only are the horses and carriage exquisitely turned out, but so too are the coachmen and grooms – in

outfits to match your carriage, complete with top hats! You can also choose from black or white horses, all of which are highly trained and picked for their calm temperament. Perfect for a vintage wedding or just to add that touch of luxury to your wedding day, a trip in a Rushmere carriage will allow you to enjoy travel at the pace of a bygone era. Choosing your flowers, organising your transport, hats for your mum...

YOU NEED TO ASK THE EXPERTS... These useful tips from our industry experts will leave you stress free.

Flower power I’m having a church ceremony and the reception in a marquee. How can I ensure my flowers work for both?

Jayne from England’s Finest Wedding Cars says:

Chris Morison Designer Florist says:

Joanne Hutchinson from Jack & Mack says:

When choosing a wedding supplier it’s vital to ensure that whoever you book is a reliable, professional and quality service provider. Check out testimonials from couples that have used them over the past few months, as this is always a good measure of the service and standard of work they provide. If the company states that it is a preferred supplier at a wedding venue, contact the venue to establish its specific criteria for recommending companies and if it can provide any first-hand knowledge. Ask questions about the chauffeur that will be with you on the day, such as their experience, whether male or female, and if they wear a uniform. Establish how long the company has been trading as this provides an idea of the expertise it may have within the wedding industry. Also worth remembering is that some companies belong to accredited organisations such as The Guild of Professional Wedding Services, which approves all its members.

Two of the most important things to establish initially are the colour scheme of the wedding and budget. Whatever the budget, with some creativity, flowers should tell a story from the church ceremony to the marquee wedding reception. It’s a good idea to welcome guests with a bouquet in the porch of the church to establish a theme which can then be carried throughout the ceremony and onto the reception. A similar display in the marquee entrance helps to tie the theme to the two venues. It’s important to remember that flowers really enhance a wedding but they shouldn’t be overpowering. I would suggest using seasonal summer flowers (peonies and roses work well), intermingled with country foliage and herbs. Corsages, hair adornments for the bridal party, cake flowers and table wedding flowers are also all really nice touches and will help to keep your theme running throughout the day.

Knowing what to wear to your daughter’s wedding is never easy. It’s important to remember this is a mum’s one opportunity to wear something truly amazing. Be confident and make your daughter as proud of you as you are of her. We advise the ‘Mother of the Bride’ to try lots of styles and be open minded. You are unlikely to ever have ever worn such a special hat before. There are no rules - it’s just important to feel comfortable, but remember it’s not an occasion to feel conservative. It can help to take a photo of yourself, so you can see now you will look in the wedding photographs. At the moment, headpieces sitting on headbands are particularly popular, which are flattering and easy to wear. As well as carrying a huge stock of hats and fascinators, we also offer a bespoke service on many styles, which means we can colour match your headpiece to your outfit.

tycoons Table top

Gianina Baba and Helen Dorritt talk to three kitchen table entrepreneurs who run their own wedding businesses.

I

t’s official. Female entrepreneurs rock. The rise of the ‘kitchen table entrepreneur’ – people, particularly women, running their own businesses from the home – rose 10% in 2012 to 482,000 new businesses. In a time of economic doom and gloom these are impressive statistics. The wedding industry is a hotbed of kitchen table businesses run by women. Sometimes inspired by their own wedding planning, sometimes by helping others, many women are starting a new career within this sector. Whether stylists, planners, florists, make-up artists or photographers, the one thing they all have in common is a passion for all things nuptial. At West Weddings we have the pleasure of meeting and working with lots of talented people who successfully run their own business from home. We asked three of them about their inspiration, how they started and what their tips are for other women interested in launching their own business.

THE STYLIST

Kirsten Butler is a Bristol-based wedding stylist, aka The Little Wedding Helper. In 2007 my best friend asked me to help with her wedding as she was becoming overwhelmed with all the colours, themes and amount of details that come with it. It quickly became apparent that there was going to be a lot to do on the morning of the wedding and we needed an extra pair of hands to bring all the visual and creative elements of the day together. Where do these extra pair of hands exist though? It turned out to be me who decorated the tables, staircase and windowsills with all the lovely personal details that we had talked about. It got me thinking that this was a service that maybe other couples would be interested in. I tested my skills and ideas out on friends, and The Little Wedding Helper was born! I was a new mum plus a part time primary school teacher when I started so it was a juggling act, but one that I really loved. It was fantastic to receive lovely feedback from couples after

an initial consultation, saying they had never thought of doing that or they felt calmer that everything was going to look just as they wanted it to, with attention to detail, personal touches and with no stress to them. I really was their extra pair of hands and wedding helper! The business took off, and I now work all over the UK styling in venues that range from village halls to castles. I also style magazine launches, photo shoots and exhibitions, and write for Perfect Wedding magazine and several blogs. 2013 has certainly been a lucky year so far. I took the business full time, I won the ‘special touches’ category at the Wedding Industry Awards and have just become the creative director for West Weddings. My advice for other women thinking of starting their own business is to test it out on friends first – get honest feedback. Also, get as much knowledge as you can; you soon find out that running a business requires many skills, some of which you’ll love and others you’ll loathe (I hate invoices!), so delegate if you can or educate yourself through courses. Network lots: I run ‘tweet ups’ for the wedding industry and it’s a great way to meet people, share worries and ideas, and make friends. Most importantly, don’t try and copy someone else – be yourself. Let your personality come across in your branding and website. It can be daunting but believe in yourself and listen to that gut feeling. It was a huge leap of faith for me but I couldn’t imagine not doing my work now. W: WWW.LITTLEWEDDINGHELPER.CO.UK

THE WEDDING STATIONER

THE ONLINE RETAILER

Leanne Hewish runs Through the Looking Glass, an online shop selling unique wedding favours, gifts and accessories. There were two reasons why I started my own business. I’ve always preferred working for myself and wanted an online store, but wasn’t sure what I could sell. I was also searching for my own wedding favours and I realised there wasn’t anything out there that really stood out. Therefore the perfect business was born! When I first launched my shop, it was called A Piece of Cake as the idea was to make the process easy for brides - handmade products that you didn’t have to make yourself. But as we’ve grown, we have been confused more and more with cake companies, which is perfectly understandable. Therefore I decided before we got any bigger that I should rebrand, and so took a step back to re-evaluate where I wanted the company to go. I have always loved Alice in Wonderland, and little things that are unique and special, so Through The Looking Glass seemed to fit this perfectly. We really try to make sure that our products are special - it’s very easy to buy hundreds of favour boxes from a wholesaler but anybody can do that. We want to be different and stand out from the norm. The highs of this job are the fantastic brides I get to work with. Being part of such a special day and seeing them happy is just amazing. I love being able to walk to my studio each morning and work on ideas and inspiration, following the ideas through and then seeing them for sale (and selling!) is why I do this. Another aspect I love is setting up styled

shoots! They can be such good fun and you get to create something really beautiful that, if you’re lucky, will end up on someone’s coffee table. If you want to set up your own business, my advice would be to love what you do and have a real passion for your business. It’s a massive market, and never has a unique selling point been more important. I also can’t stress the importance enough of protecting your ideas and designs. Everything is open to interpretation but blatant copying is a real problem for all creative businesses. Those that say it’s a form of flattery are sadly wrong! I would also highly recommend using social media to promote yourself – it can be an incredibly good way of advertising if it’s done right. Get to know people within the industry by attending networking nights and ‘tweet ups’ - a lot of your business will come from recommendations, so it’s really important to build relationships with like-minded people if you’re going to succeed. W: WWW.THROUGHTHELOOKING-GLASS.COM

Nicky Wait is the owner of Lavinia Jane, offering bespoke wedding and special occasion stationery. I’ve always enjoyed making cards for friends and family, and I even did my own wedding invitations. The idea for Lavinia Jane came from when I was working at Bristol Blue Glass and there were lots of glass beads in the office. They were driving me crazy just lying there - I thought that there had to be a good way to use them up, and so started turning them into cards, with motifs such as butterflies. I then went to a wedding fair on behalf of the company and took the cards with me. People really liked them and said that I should do more, which led me to the idea of creating Lavinia Jane. Running my own business is fantastic for a work/life balance as it allows me to be completely flexible with my family. I have four children – and a number of cats! – and being my own boss means that I can fit in work around their needs. Lavinia Jane also lets me be creative, which is so important to me. I love being able to interpret clients’ wishes and work around their briefs to make something beautiful. If you’re thinking about starting up your own business, my advice would be to just do it! Start out doing it on the side, in order to build up your client base, and be patient while it gets off the ground – word of mouth is so important within the wedding industry and it will take a while for people to know about you. Networking is very important to support this too. I also find Facebook to be a great way of keeping in touch with people and promoting my work to a wider audience – I aim to do one or two posts a week and always get a really positive response. I absolutely love what I do and I’m so pleased I made the leap! I now run Lavinia Jane as a full time business and couldn’t be happier. K

aren’s and Ben’s romanced developed gradually during their university days, from a wonderful friendship. “We didn’t have many formal dates because we were in university halls together, so we just hung out a lot. Our first proper date was to see Monsters Inc at the cinema,” says Karen. Over their 10 year relationship, the couple shared many memorable moments that have brought them closer over time. “It’s the small things that mean so much rather than big gestures - like Ben hiding a note under my pillow saying ‘I love you’, or bringing me a cup of tea in bed on a weekend morning.” The romantic proposal came on a cold March evening, as Ben took Karen for a walk in their local park. “Once we got there, I noticed that there were fairy lights hanging from the trees. Ben guided me towards them, got down on one knee and proposed with a party ring biscuit,” explains Karen. The sweet treat was later replaced by a beautiful diamond ring, which they picked together. Choosing their venue was without a doubt quite an easy decision as the couple already had their eyes on a familiar setting within 10 minutes’ walk from their house. Karen and Ben promised their hearts to each other at the Pittville Pump Rooms, in Cheltenham, on a warm summer’s day in June 2012. “We wanted to have all of our favourite people in the same place. As we are both close to our families and my family in particular is massive, a small guest list was never an option!” says Karen. The blushing bride wore a beautiful lace and organza wedding dress called Magdaleina, a design by Forget Me Not and bought from Chanticleer bridal boutique in Cheltenham. “When I began hunting for my wedding dress, I loved the idea of having a really classy, sophisticated dress and I was adamant I didn’t want a strapless dress,” says Karen. “The assistant in the bridal boutique suggested I try this dress and I absolutely loved the way it felt and looked. It had all the features I wanted: luxurious

lace, with scalloped edge and the right shape skirt – however it was strapless which was a real stumbling block for me.” Despite trying on several other dresses, Karen could not forget the Magdaleina, so she returned to Chanticleer, who were able to add detachable cap sleeves, which turned out to be the perfect solution. The groom’s outfit was a stylish 3 piece grey slim fit suit from Next. Ben added a quirky twist, by wearing it with a purple tie and mis-matched blue and pink socks. The best man, the ushers and the bride’s dad wore similar suits, with navy ties, fitting in with Karen’s navy blue court shoes. A personal touch came from Ben’s aunt, who sewed floral squares into the waistcoat pockets. When it came to choosing the best man, Ben broke with tradition and had two ‘best people’- his best friend and his sister. “Sally wore a tailored grey dress with a dramatic bow detail on the back and navy blue shoes, which tied in well with both the bridesmaids and groom’s party,” explains Karen. The couple took on board the challenge of planning their wedding in a personal and relaxed way. After designing their wedding stationery themselves, they passed on the responsibility for the sponge and fruit wedding cake to their talented family friends. Its icing design was Karen’s idea and it incorporated a dairy-free fruit tier. Thanks to the groom’s aunt and uncle, two chauffeur driven cars - a maroon 1963 Jaguar and a blue 1989 Daimler Sovereign - enabled the couple and their parents to arrive in style. All these details and more were captured by photographer Marcus Ward of Bigeye Photography. “I am so delighted we booked him as not only did he do a fabulous job on the day, we also ended up firm friends by the end of the process! We also felt that he was genuinely excited about our big day, rather than just treating it as another job,” says Karen. The wedding day was a momentous celebration of the couple’s love and music played a special part

in creating a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Songs by the Foo Fighters, Beatles and Elton John played during the ceremony, followed by Take That’s ‘Rule the World’ as the newlyweds walked out holding hands. “We spent hours choosing the music, the stationery, the cake and the flowers because we wanted our guests to say ‘that’s so THEM!’ We didn’t want to do anything just because it was traditional or normal, we wanted every decision to feel typical of us,” explains Karen. Looking back, Karen thinks that “the ceremony was my favourite because the vows are really what the whole day was about.” Ben’s highlight of the day was “the game of cricket held on the lawn between the reception and the evening do! But also having our family and friends in the same room was an amazing feeling, and I just kept looking around the room with a grin on my face.”

A

mini break in Norfolk was the perfect opportunity for Tom St John to take the plunge and propose to his university girlfriend, Rachel. He had convinced her to take a walk to the beach on a cold and dreary day and, to her surprise, produced a ring made from garden wire. “I thought it was a joke, since Tom messes about all the time,” says Rachel. But after being reassured that he was genuine, she happily accepted. The couple met while they were sharing a flat in halls of residence at Bristol University back in 2007. Starting out as friends, they found their friendship grew into something more, “Rachel has these beautiful brown eyes and a fun nature about her. She’s intelligent, honest and knows exactly what she wants,” says Tom. Rachel can’t help but compliment Tom either. “He is spontaneous and has this dry sense of humour. His caring and affectionate personality shines through and he’s been supportive through some difficult times.” Their wedding took place at the breath-taking Clevedon Hall in North Somerset on 27th July 2012, the hottest day that month. Chosen for the location and its gorgeous interior design, it had everything they wanted and more for their dream day. Hiring the whole venue meant they had numerous rooms to use, giving them flexibility on where to have the ceremony and reception. “We felt strongly about getting married in Bristol, since it was where we met and had lived for five years,” Rachel explains. “We also wanted to make it easier on visiting family and friends by having the whole wedding day take place at one venue.” “Our flowers came from Kimberley’s the florist at Cadbury garden centre,” says Rachel. “They arranged the most beautiful bouquets which complemented mine and the bridesmaid’s dresses. The centrepieces also matched our theme perfectly.”

The food was also a highlight for the couple. Catered by Parsnip Mash, the chef even got praise from Tom’s aunt, a chef herself. “They were absolutely phenomenal!” Rachel recalls. “Simon the caterer helped us design our perfect wedding breakfast, making our ideas come to life.” The cake was equally delicious, with every layer being different - fruitcake, chocolate and vanilla sponge meant no matter what their guests fancied, they had it covered. One of the most important and difficult tasks in any bride’s wedding plans was found in a less than traditional way, after Rachel found her exquisite one shoulder Maggie Sottero gown online and instantly knew it was the one. She then hunted a local stockist who could order it for her, which turned out to be Allison Jayne. “The shop was so helpful. They got the dress for me and did all the proper fittings to get it just right,” explains Rachel. During the ceremony and reception you would find it hard to catch the couple’s photographer. “Eleanor was a fantastic photographer,” says Rachel. “She blended in seamlessly to take intimate photos that we weren’t even aware of, and organised the big group shots in minimal time, leaving us to enjoy the day.” The wedding didn’t run quite as smoothly as the couple had hoped. The first hiccup came the morning before the big day after a close encounter with an iron. “My best man Alex and I were both taking our time in getting ready and had finally got around to ironing our white shirts when disaster struck,” explains Tom. The guys realised they had been taking far too long with their ironing and that there was now a dark stain on the collar of Tom’s shirt. A lot of soap detergent and one handy mother later, the stain was finally removed and Tom was ready for his bride. But it wasn’t just Tom who had a heart stopping moment. The couple had their own ‘Ross and Rachel’ moment of the wrong

name being said at the altar, keeping the couple on their toes. Luckily it wasn’t the bride or groom who got it wrong. “When we were saying our vows the registrar accidently called me Rebecca, who’s my twin sister,” laughs Rachel. “It could have been a complete disaster but thankfully the room filled with laughter and it’s actually a personal highlight for me as Rebecca and I are so close.” After a few surprises on the day Tom recalls his personal highlights. “I enjoyed every part of it, from the speeches to the bad dancing in the evening. Seeing Rachel come down the stairs looking absolutely stunning was the best feeling ever.” Tom and Rachel’s nuptials were an intimate and light hearted affair. The couple say that “it was amazing to spend such a special day with all our family and friends. It was unforgettable; something we will talk about for the rest of our lives.”

rought together on the island of Sicily, Veronica and David’s relationship quickly blossomed during a singles’ holiday in 2001. Not wanting to disturb the balance of the group, they were discreet in their advances towards one another in spite of growing affections. Three months later during a reunion with the same group from the holiday, Dave fondly remembers that “their faces were a picture when they progressively began to realise that we were an item!” With a mutual attraction born from similar tastes and good conversation, Vee recognised that they “shared the same values and humour… Dave was great to talk to, understanding, caring and also a good listener.” The proposal itself came while having dinner at a restaurant in Bath, although Dave jokes that there was “none of the knees business!” It was third time lucky as Vee had been ill on two previous attempts; happily, she soon felt better and the proposal came as a lovely surprise to an unsuspecting Vee who “didn’t really have any expectations; I just hoped he would pop the question eventually!” Dave opted for an eye-catching platinum engagement ring - designed by Nicholas Wylde of Bath – with a diamond square stone cutting that really stood out from the crowd. The wedding took place in August at the stunning 14th century manor house in Castle Combe. “Not only is it a beautiful setting,” says Vee, “but the manor house itself oozes history and charm without feeling too big and cold.” Wanting to create a relaxed day where the ceremony blended seamlessly into the evening, they made the decision to hold the reception at the manor as well. For Vee and Dave it was important that “everyone could come for the whole day and night and feel relaxed and comfortable without having

to worry about getting from A to B.” Dave adds, “As it is such a lovely venue, we wanted to maximise our time there.” There were several thoughts that they both shared in regards to the wedding such as it being a non-religious ceremony, although Dave jokes that for the most part, “I did as I was told!” Having a close group of friends and family was another key factor in the planning stages. “We wanted a big party and celebration with all those we wanted there.” Getting married later in life (this was Vee’s first marriage and Dave’s second), the couple felt that there was no pressure in the decision making process, which meant that they “were able to decide on everything without any interference from anyone.” As always, an English wedding is at the mercy of the great British weather, although the grey clouds cleared the previous evening much to their relief. “On the day of the wedding it was excellent, the sun shone and it had a Mediterranean feel that we love,” says Vee. Vee’s couture dress was bespoke in its design and was made by Catherine Miller, a silk specialist in Bath. “The whole process with Catherine was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone,” says Vee. “Dress-fittings were always a pleasure, fun and exciting to look forward to.” Wanting to reverse traditional trends, Vee asked the bridesmaids to follow an ivory theme as Dave wanted to wear a white suit. “This meant my choice of a coral orange duchess satin silk for my dress was more of a statement and added something unexpected to the event!” Although this did mean that Dave had to travel all the way to Aix-en-Provence, as it proved immensely tricky to find a suit that was made from white linen with an Italian cut! The photographer was Lee Niel from Bath who impressed the couple with his unobtrusive, informal style and, most importantly, captured those special

moments that immortalised the day. An interesting addition was the inclusion of husband and wife videographer team, Ernie and Ann McKenna from Westbury, who “captured moments that we missed, so one is able to see the whole wedding from a guest’s perspective; rather like having an invisible guest there recording it all. We now have a habit of watching the DVD on every anniversary.” For Vee and Dave, the event was a magical experience that could not be compared with any other in their lives. Vee sums her feelings of their terrific day. “It was the best day of my life and I would happily repeat it all again and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’d still pick the same team for their unique qualities and special skills. It is something so special to share such a magical day with all those people you love and want to be with. I’d also still pick the same man to share it with!”

hese two teachers met when they were set up by two friends and their first date was to a local pub then to the cinema. “The night Jo and I met we just talked and talked, it was like we had been friends for years,” says Matt. “I knew she was someone that was going to be very special to me from that first night we met.” Ever the romantic, a year later Matt proposed on Boxing Day, whisking Jo off for a surprise meal at Cheltenham’s Hotel du Vin, before popping the question with a stunning diamond ring, hand-crafted by specialist Cheltenham jewellery-maker Ryan Spicer. “I had no idea he was going to propose, but it was so romantic and the ring was beautiful. It was so personal the fact that Matt chose and designed it himself,” says Jo. With so many friends they simply had to invite to their wedding, Jo and Matt knew exactly the sort of venue they wanted. A country house, room for everyone to stay the night and, most importantly, somewhere they could call their own for the day. The search was on for somewhere that would sleep up to 100 guests but not cost a small fortune. And the minute they saw Eastwood Park, they knew they’d found the perfect place to tie the knot. The country house, with its 69 en suite bedrooms and stunning gardens, was exactly what they’d imagined, and it was able to host their ceremony, reception, evening disco and a relaxed breakfast the next day before everyone left. Wedding manager Claire Shea took them through a detailed itinerary for the day. “Everything was organised for us so we could just relax and enjoy the day,” explains Jo. “Claire worked out a timetable so we knew exactly what was happening and when. We had complete confidence in her and it meant we didn’t

have to worry about anything - we could just enjoy having a great time with our friends and family.” The couple decided on an elegant colour scheme of cream and champagne. Jo chose a stunning dress called Stardust by designer Ian Stuart, in an unusual cream fabric with tiny little gold threads, from Wedding Days of Cheltenham. Cotswolds-based make-up artist Kate Kelvin created a glowing, natural make-up look and styled Jo’s long hair so that it cascaded over one shoulder in dreamy waves. “I wanted to wear my hair down but still wanted it to look special,” says Jo. “Kate knew exactly what to do and came up with just the right style.” The four bridesmaids wore pretty strapless champagne-coloured dresses from Coast, which Jo adapted with cream ribbon. Matt and the rest of the groom’s party were kitted out by Moss Bros - which proved a practical decision with members of the wedding party dotted about all over the country. All they had to do was pop into their nearest branch to get fitted. Matt and Jo kept costs down by scouring the internet and asking friends to help with those extra touches. Friend and photographer Alec Waters took some stunning shots mixing creative and informal with the traditional. “He did a fantastic job and listened to what we wanted,” says Matt. Bouquets and table decorations were created by a friend of the family who used to be a wedding florist. Jo found simple galvanised buckets which were filled with cream and peach roses, greenery and berries, matching her teardrop bouquet and hand-tied bunches for the bridesmaids. The same friend made and decorated the cake, which crowned a stunning display of cupcakes, made by one of the bridesmaids. Another great idea

was jars of old-fashioned sweets dotted about the reception and evening do – all bought online. “I thought maybe I’d gone a bit too far but everyone loved the sweets. ”They nearly all went,” laughs Jo. Quirky table names also made everyone laugh, named after Matt’s favourite hip-hop artists. “The day went like a dream from start to finish. It was lovely and warm, and with such a fabulous setting, everyone was out in the gardens with their Bucks Fizz,” says Jo. “The meal was fantastic, the speeches were brilliant and in the evening we had a fabulous party into the early hours. The best part was having the whole place to ourselves - it was just what we wanted, a great house party.”

atie and Dan both have different ideas of when their first kiss was. “There is a small discrepancy over when we had it,” says Katie. “We both think it’s in a different place - not a great start!” The couple first met at senior school, where Katie was attracted to Dan straight away despite his inability in a certain sport. “He used to come to the bar I was working at and play in the pool tournaments,” explains Katie. “He was rubbish but we just clicked.” Perhaps he did it on purpose to gain Katie’s attention? It certainly worked. Dan made up for his disappointing pool talents with his original and unforgettable proposal to his school sweetheart. Katie recalls just why it was so special for her. “We were at the Thermae Bath spa for the day, relaxing in the rooftop terrace pool. Dan went under water and the only thing left was this stunning ring bobbing above the surface.” An unexpected surprise for Katie, he even got the ring right. On 27th October 2012 the couple were married at the stunning St Mary’s Church in Wotton under Edge. “We’d recently moved to the area and absolutely fell in love with it,” explains Katie. “We really couldn’t have found a better choice than our local church in a place where we were starting our life together.” Not wanting to arrive in the traditional wedding car, Katie decided she would ride her trusty horse to the church. “Rocky has been with me for 19 years and is a huge part of my life. I wanted to be unusual with my entrance and it seemed only fitting he be there with me.” After a moving ceremony, the wedding party headed to The Grange Hotel in nearby Winterbourne. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it was the perfect place for the couple to celebrate long into the night with friends and family. “It is just a beautiful manor house,” says Katie. “It was local for our friends and family so was the perfect choice.” After the equine entrance, the transport to the reception was also a little unusual - a surprise from Katie’s

sister and bridesmaid Carla saw the couple make their journey in a VW campervan. “I have always wanted one of my own,” explains Dan. “I love surfing and the two seem to go hand in hand, it really made my day!” The bride’s beautiful wedding dress was designed by Demetrios and bought from Truly You bridal in Thornbury. Katie says the bridal store was amazing in helping her with her plans. “They were friendly and fun, always keeping themselves available, even making time out of hours to allow us the time to get there.” Her gorgeous gown was worn with her less than traditional white Weddington boots, which were perfect for the slightly muddy ground! Everything was planned by Katie and her two bridesmaids - her sister Carla and Dan’s sister Becky - and the whole day went without a hitch. Despite the wedding being held in October, the weather even played nice for the couple. Raining for weeks before the big day, Dan and Katie had their fingers and toes crossed, but “we woke up to bright blue skies,” says Katie. The wedding was special for the couple in many ways, but there was a tragedy that encouraged them to enjoy it even more. “We had some bad weeks on the run up to the day, as my mum sadly passed away just three weeks before,” explains Katie. The couple lit a candle and included a special prayer for Katie’s mum in the ceremony, making it an emotional celebration. It was actually her mum’s request that Katie should ride Rocky to the church - “she wanted to make sure I rode him, that we all had a ‘proper good knees up’ and just enjoyed ourselves.” And with their special day filled with loving friends and family, Katie and Dan did just that.

WORD

PERFECT Don’t slip up on the timeless tradition of giving your first speech as a husband. Follow Samantha Merritt’s advice and it’ll be hard to put a foot wrong.

Y

ou’ve done it. You successfully made it to the church on time, recited your vows word perfect and married the woman of your dreams. The worst is surely over? Well, maybe not. You remember there is still another important part to your wedding day that you have been trying to perfect these past few weeks, the reception speech. This is a nerve-wracking task for any groom, and working out how to put in to words what you’re feeling at that very moment to a room full of people hanging on to your every word isn’t easy. But there are some easy ways for you to cut out the stress of speaking to a large group of people and make it a memorable part of the day for all the right reasons. First things first, normally the father of the bride will have just made his speech so it’s only right you start by thanking him for his kind words and offer a toast. Then move on to

thanking everyone who came and made it such a special day for you both – but avoiding common clichés, such as “without you, none of this would have been possible.” Yes it would, your bride and her faithful best friends and mum probably did most of the preparation and planning, so no need to thank your guests for it. There are some exceptions in the wedding party who you do need to thank, though. Mum and Dad and the family who have travelled a long way to be with you are the ones to single out. Don’t forget to mention your new in-laws, getting you instantly into their good books. If your parents’ marriage has stood the test of time, then call them on it, describing how their time together has become a template for you on which to base your own marriage. If they are separated, surely there’s a joke somewhere in there of what not to do? This is also a good time for you to describe what marriage means to you. While this is not

for every groom – most will opt out of showing their emotional side – it does make the whole speech more personal and gives your guests an insight into the love you have for your bride. This leads us nicely to an important part of the speech, praising your new wife. Get it right and it will make the day – and night – go smoother for you. Tell her why you love her and how she has created such a special day for you both. A compliment will always go down well (remember that as a general rule as well guys), let her know you’re one of the luckiest guys alive for her to say yes to marrying you, a sure winner. Avoid any puns or jokes such as “she will never make this much of an effort now we’re married” - she will not favour you for that. But witty anecdotes of how you two met or holidays you have taken together are a great way to give the guests some insight into your relationship, and will of course bring back some happy memories for you both. After the thanks, toasts and praising words the speeches will then normally lead to the always-worrying best man’s speech. This is the time to unleash all the jokes you have kept bottled up. It is his job to tell the embarrassing stories though, not you. Lend some kind words about how supportive he has been through the whole wedding planning process and what he’s done to keep you going. Now is probably not the right time to mention the stag do antics. Still a hint of nerves there? If you need a few more tips and tricks then there are loads of publications out there to help grooms get it just right. Make sure you plan and prepare ahead of time; leaving it until the last minute will end in disaster and make you look a little silly in front of a lot of people. Also, have faith in what you’re saying. If you get through it with cheers, applause, a beaming bride and perhaps a few laughs thrown in then you know you’ve done a good job. WEST WEDDINGS 45

W

hen it comes to stag parties, you want your man to have a good time with his mates and enjoy a break from the ever-growing wedding to do list. But what do you do if his best man is not able to - or can’t be trusted not to - plan something other than a weekend of shameful events that everyone will try to forget or struggle to remember afterwards? Do the Hangover films ring a bell? But there is a solution - talk to your man about putting you, the bride, in charge of making all the arrangements. That way, you can guarantee your groom a stag do that’s within budget, to his taste and that won’t involve any dodgy tattoos or tigers. And as stag parties abroad are not to everyone’s taste or budget, we’ve come up with some local options that we’re sure your man will love.

THE THUNDER OF THE HOOVES

What better way for your man to celebrate the last days of freedom than a day at the races? Gentlemen with a taste for betting will love a day at the track, which provides an opportunity for men to put on their smart clothing and enjoy plenty of food and drinks while cheering for their favourite nag. Bath Racecourse offers packages for groups, which include exclusive use of a hospitality box, meals and a private bar.

CONFIDENCE IN THE KITCHEN

We all know that men don’t usually spend enough time cooking. It may be something

they have never had a chance to learn or they’ve become so used to relying on a woman’s cooking or frozen meals that they forget to try. As you prepare for married life, however, wouldn’t it be nice to know that your partner can surprise you with a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day or a delicious meal on a busy weekday? You may also find that most of his friends have never tried their hand in the kitchen either, so they’ll all find the experience an eye-opener. Your groom may not become the new Jamie Oliver, but he will most certainly become more confident and discover the joy of cooking. Evening classes in Italian cooking are available at City of Bath College, while Ashburton Cookery School offers a selection of weekend courses for beginners called Gentleman’s Relish – no previous experience required. For any avid wine enthusiasts, consider trying a vineyard tour and wine tasting experience, such as the ones available from Red Letter Days.

RELAXING RETREAT

Is your man feeling stressed with all the last minute preparation for the big day? If so, he needs to take his stags for a spa break. The Vale Resort in Cardiff offers a “surf and spa break” which is the perfect mix of activity and relaxation. The package includes two hours of surfing in Porthcawl, a night’s accommodation and full use of the relaxation and spa facilities at the hotel. Your husband-to-be and his stags will thank you for the experience and feel much more chilled and ready for what lies ahead.

FAST AND FURIOUS

For driving enthusiasts who would relish the chance to get behind the wheels of rally cars and learn how to do hand brake turns, skid control and flicks, Chilli Sauce offers driving activities across many locations, including Bristol and Bath. This is an opportunity for everyone in the group to compete against their friends for the top position. Stags can also choose to drive blindfolded, while their friends direct them around the obstacle course. With Richard Hammond making it look easy on the BBC’s Top Gear, this activity is a brilliant way to get everyone working as a team and trusting each other. 013 is the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and what better way to celebrate this novel of love and romance than using it as a theme for a summer wedding shoot? We had four models on hand to be the two central couples from the novel; real life couple Sabrina Cowley and Nic Matthews as Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, and Kayleigh Archer and Tian Bobsin as Jane and Mr Bingley. A host of period touches including vintageinspired outfits and jewellery brought the book to life in the exquisite house and grounds of Eastington Park.

The venue

Eastington Park is a jewel of a venue, a little honey-coloured mansion house tucked away just outside Stonehouse in Gloucestershire. This Grade II listed Georgian building is set in 8 acres of gardens, with gorgeous views to the countryside beyond - the ideal location for imagining yourself as the character in a Jane Austen novel! The house has gone through a variety of owners and uses in its 200 years of history, including being used as a care home as well as the private residence of a number of families. Its current owner, Sally Roberts, turned it into a private hotel and wedding venue just over a year ago, and it was recently nominated as ‘best newcomer’ in the Wedding Industry Awards 2013.

For weddings, Eastington Park is offered on an exclusive basis, meaning you have the entire house and grounds for you and your guests. The venue is suitable for between 60150 guests, and as well as receptions, is also licensed for civil ceremonies and partnerships. You can say “I do” inside the house, in the morning room, the ballroom or the garden room, or if the weather is kind, the wrought

“To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love.” iron pergola in the “secret garden” just below the house is a lovely spot in which to pledge your troth. The mansion also has 31 bedrooms which can accommodate up to 70 people, allowing you and your guests the chance to fully enjoy your time in this beautiful venue.

Eleanor Saunders has been running Interlace Photography for seven years, offering her skills to brides and grooms across the South West. Eleanor’s photographs have a fresh and natural style, which is clearly shown in the images from our shoot: the beauty of Eastington Park’s

setting, as well as all the little details, really shine through. When it comes to wedding photography, “the photos should be about the wedding, not the wedding about the photos,” she states. Eleanor aims to be unobtrusive, mingling with guests to get relaxed, reportage style shots, as well as the more formal group and couple portraits. As well as weddings, Eleanor also offers portrait sessions and photographs christenings and naming ceremonies, and her enthusiasm for her job is very evident. “I work with happy, beautiful people – it’s the loveliest job in the world!” Eleanor says. “I get to make people look their best on one of the happiest days of their life – what could be better?”

The outfits and accessories

Our brief to Anne Harding, the Bristol wedding boutique, was for dresses that Lizzie and Jane would approve of, and they certainly delivered. Our Regency-inspired dresses were accessorised with a selection of jewellery, headpieces and other items from Bridezillas, the accessories boutique in Keynsham run by Amanda Davis-Harrison. For the brides’ day time look, Sabrina modelled Essense D1266, an empire line gown with beautiful detachable lace overlay skirt, accompanied by two Rhapsody Designs ‘Isla’ crystal and pearl flower combs and the ‘Dana’ necklace and earrings set by Twilight

Designs. Later on this dress was accessorised with ‘Daisy Jane’ by Twilight Designs, a crystal and diamante flower necklace and matching leaf earrings, 'Waterlily' bracelet from Ivory & Co, plus a pair of lacy gloves. Kayleigh wore another Essense gown, D1315, with a gorgeous lace keyhole back, which Amanda paired with a hand tied ribbon and lace headpiece by Lobster Love, crystal and freshwater pearl drop earrings by Ivory & Co, and Twilight Designs’ ‘Melonie’ cuff bracelet. Kayleigh’s second daytime dress was by Martina Liana, and featured a square cut lace neckline over a taffeta skirt. This was accompanied by an Abigail Grace side tiara and Ivory & Co’s ‘Charleston’ earrings. The coffeecoloured ribbon belt with floral detail which comes with the dress really brought the whole outfit together. For the night time look, when our brides went to the ball, Sabrina wore Sincerity 3734, a strapless A line lace gown with empire line and demure ribbon belt. This elegant dress was paired with an ‘Olivia’ hair clip by Lily Bella, and a ‘Mia’ delicate pear drop necklace with Swarovski crystal and matching earrings. The finishing touch was long ivory satin gloves. Kayleigh wore Justin Alexander 8642 in oyster, which features stunning lace spiral ruffles and an unusual cross strap back detail. This was accessorised with an Abigail Grace hairpiece called ‘Claudia’, featuring high quality cut crystals with pearls and seed beads, all of which combine to create a romantic soft design that floats like a vine through the hair. The grooms wore two outfits each, starting with tail coats in charcoal and black, before moving onto frock coats in for the evening look. “Our frock coats aren’t as popular as our tail coats but they’re such a good look,” says Lee from Anne Harding. Waistcoats and cravats in neutral shades were spot on for the period, with the finishing touch being a dapper top hat and stiff upper lip – Darcy would be proud.

“I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.” The hair

Our brides’ beautiful styles were created by Stacey Jade, a mobile bridal stylist. Sabrina’s light brown hair was gathered into a low side bun, which was made using a bun ring to help hold the elegant look. A piece of hair was then plaited and woven around the base of the bun to create a delicate detail. Kayleigh’s hair was WEST WEDDINGS 55

curled using Corioliss straighteners and then pinned back with kirby grips into a classic updo. Stacey created volume by back brushing the hair, and then it was secured in place with Tigi Bed Head hairspray. As a finishing touch, a couple of tendrils were pulled forward to frame Kayleigh’s face and to complement her side fringe. Stacey Jade has been creating gorgeous wedding looks for over 4 and a half years, travelling around the region to help you get the perfect look for your special day. Stacey also comes with a personal recommendation from the West Weddings photoshoot team, too – she did the wedding day hair for Amanda from Bridezillas!

The make-up

Sadia Akhtar, a freelance make-up artist, was responsible for the delicate, barely-there English rose look of our two brides. She started with MAC Fluid Line liquid foundation for Kayleigh and for Sabrina, MAC Studio Moisture Tint. Sadia applied MAC Kitschmas pigment on both the brides’ cheeks, as well as using it on Sabrina’s eyes. Sabrina’s cheeks were contoured with a Bourjois Peau Matt bronzer, which contains tiny flecks of gold, and both girls were given a delicate blush with MAC Pink Swoon blusher. Kayleigh’s eyes were highlighted with MAC Vanilla pigment, and then outlined with brown eyeliner from Benefit. Eyebrow pencil from Shavata and Maybelline’s Plump Up the Volume mascara completed both girls’ eye make-up. Lips were coloured a delicate shade of pink using MAC’s Vegas Volt and Ravishing lipsticks, with Lancome Juicy Tube used in the evening look for a more glossy appearance. WEST WEDDINGS 57

Sadia started off doing make-up for music videos and festivals, which evolved into offer her services for weddings and other events. As well as being a talented make-up artist, Sadia is also a music producer working for Radio 1 Introducing and local Bristol station Ujima, which she combines with a job in media sales.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” The flowers

Tina Bignall from Tiger Lily Flowers used traditional garden flowers for the bouquets, buttonholes and table decoration, choosing flowers that would have been readily available in Jane’s own time. The bouquets mixed beautiful colours of pink and blue with delicate scents. Flowers included blue anemones, asparagus ferns, pale pink roses, white ranunculus and white ‘Charming’ roses, mixed with cut pink clematis and jasmine foliage. The table centrepiece featured white hydrangeas, green vibernum opulus, fern and more Charming roses in an elevated silver candlestick, a decorative object which would have been common in a wealthy Regency household. The floral arrangements were finished with lace ribbons and pearl beads, to add that touch of vintage charm.

The carriage and pair of horses

Our equine models for the day were Thomas and Saffier, two of Rushmere Farm Carriage’s lovely horses who pull a variety of period, authentic carriages for weddings and other events. We loved watching the horses be prepared for their photos, which included oiling their hooves for that finishing touch! Our two couples travelled in the Landau, a four seater open carriage with hoods which was first produced in England in the 19th century, and which was a type that Jane herself may have travelled in. Rushmere also offers the Victoria, a summer carriage favoured by Queen Victoria for its low step, plus a glass panelled carriage, the Clarence. Rushmere is a real family business, owned by husband and wife Adrian and Margaret Lander, and with their daughter Sarah involved too. On the day, as well as the beautiful decked out carriage and horses, the coachmen and grooms will be dressed in appropriate livery, to match the carriage, and there is also a choice of black or white horses.

The cake

Stunning is the only word to describe our cake for the shoot, designed and created by Anne Gliddon of Pretty Amazing Cakes. When asked to come up with a cake to reflect the Regency period, Anne decided on a sky blue and white scheme topped with sugar roses, incorporating cameo, swags and edible lacework, made using specialist silicone moulds and piped icing details. The beautiful icing was finished off with ribbons overlaid with real lace. The colour and detailing on the cake was the perfect match for the décor of Eastington Park, echoing the swags on the wallpaper in the ballroom, and a great accompaniment to our theme in general. “The lace design is hugely popular with 60 WEST WEDDINGS

brides this year,” reported Anne. “It can echo their dress and is so versatile on vintage or contemporary styled cakes.” Anne’s extensive talent with flour and sugar mean that whatever theme or design you want for your wedding day, she can create in it an edible version.

The models

You may recognise professional model Tian as the groom from our Great Gatsby-inspired shoot in Autumn 2012; he once again worked with us to be another character from a great piece of literature. The other three models all took time away from their usual jobs in finance, marketing and sales to help us bring the book to life. Kayleigh’s favourite dress was the oyster coloured Justin Alexander, and she has earmarked it in case she ever walks down the aisle. Both Tian and Nic were very taken with their top hats and canes - “I feel as if I want to do a dance!” said Tian.

“I am determined that only the deepest love will induce me into matrimony.” DETAILS VENUE EASTINGTON PARK, EASTINGTON, STONEHOUSE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE GL10 3RY T: 01453 827926 W: WWW.EASTINGTONPARK.CO.UK PHOTOGRAPHER INTERLACE PHOTOGRAPHY W: WWW.INTERLACEPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK OUTFITS ANNE HARDING, 90-92 SHIREHAMPTON ROAD, BRISTOL BS9 2DR T: 0117 968 3074 W: WWW.ANNEHARDING.COM ACCESSORIES BRIDEZILLAS, 18 HIGH STREET, KEYNSHAM, BRISTOL BS31 1DQ T: 0117 904 3039 W: WWW.BRIDEZILLAS.BIZ HAIR STACEY JADE W: WWW.STACEYJADE.CO.UK E: STACEYJADE@LIVE.CO.UK MAKE-UP SADIA AKHTAR T: 07528 767192 FA: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ GROUPS/174345512718514 E: SADIA.AKHTAR83@GMAIL.COM FLOWERS TIGERLILY FLOWERS, 3 CHELFORD GROVE, STOKE LODGE, BRISTOL BS34 6DD T: 01454 856737 W: WWW.TIGERLILYFLOWERS.CO.UK CAKE PRETTY AMAZING CAKES T: 0117 924 3036 W: WWW.PRETTYAMAZINGCAKES.CO.UK HORSE AND CARRIAGE RUSHMERE FARM CARRIAGES, CROSSWAYS, COLEFORD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE GL16 8QP T: 01594 835319 W: WWW.HORSEDRAWN-CARRIAGE.CO.UK BRIDE MODELS SABRINA COWLEY AND KAYLEIGH ARCHER GROOM MODELS NIC MATTHEWS AND TIAN BOBSIN W: WWW.TIANBOBSIN.CO.UK

o outside With the Glastonbury festival making a comeback this year and the sun shining (fingers crossed), going outside is the new in thing. Festival weddings are a great way to get all your guests in one place for both the ceremony and reception. Hiring out a local field is easy, and can be a cost effective way for you to celebrate. Think bunting and hay bales, a live band and welly boots. Lower the heel We’re not saying you should walk down the aisle in a pair of garish orthopaedic shoes, but rather than crippling your feet in sky high stilettos let them breathe in a pair of pretty short heels. It’s also great for the over six foot girl who doesn’t want to tower over her groom as they say ‘I do.’ Remember, though, there is a difference between kitten heels and low heels – I’m definitely not advocating the former. Pretty pastels A trend the catwalks just never tire of, with the summer season approaching the pastel shades are once again coming out to play. Keep the celebratory and light weight feel of the day going, from your bridesmaid’s dresses and flowers, invitations and party favours. This doesn’t extend to pastel yellow nails, however. Unique party favours If offering your wedding guests a bag of almonds to remember your special day is not your kind of thing then try and put a new spin on things. Anything from bride and groom shaped bottle openers to his and her key rings will let your guests know you’ve given it that little extra something. If you’re willing to spend that bit more, personalised engraving will add that special touch.

Cut it out When you think of your dream wedding dress you normally envision a full skirt and the long train that will rival even that of Princess Diana’s. But it’s summer and it’s hot. You don’t want to look a flustering mess in your professional photos that you paid so much for trying to organise that heap of material behind you. Instead, why not opt for a short cut dress? It’s still as demure and eye-catching as a long dress but with half the material and hassle. Get those tanned legs out and make your entrance with a difference. Pin it Hair pins are something a little different from a traditional veil but can still make an impact. They work best if you decide to have your hair up in the summer heat but look just as pretty clipped in at the side if you want to let your luscious locks flow freely.

hemed weddings Most of us will have been to one, some of us may have even thought up an excuse to get out of one, the majority of us will have heard horror stories from others about one. The themed wedding is one to be avoided if you want to look back at your wedding photos and not cringe at the memory that you actually dressed up as The Little Mermaid, marrying your Prince Eric. From the classic Disney to the shocking and uncomfortable nude wedding, all your guests will be terrified to RSVP. Keep the fairy-tale magic without the costume drama. Flashback fever It seems that everything around us isn’t new anymore, but a constant stream of recycled trends from the last eighty years. But is this nostalgia really a good look on your wedding day? Keep the shoulder pads away, do not even contemplate neon colours for your bridesmaids’ dresses and say no to a heavily made up face. Dark lips You will be forever checking the mirror to see if you’ve snagged a bit of your gorgeous dark red lippy on your front teeth. For your ceremony avoid this disaster and go au natural. Can’t bear to go without anything on your lips? Try a lip tint such as Benefit’s Posie Tint to give you a little colour boost without the unnecessary mess. False eyelashes The Only Way Is Essex is to blame for this trend even coming to our attention. They’re tricky to get right, no bride has the time to try and fix them throughout the day and they almost always leave you with bloodshot eyes. False eyelashes aren’t the only way to give your eyes some impact - liquid eyeliner and eye crèmes work wonders to give your eyes that extra sparkle. First dance cheese The first dance is a time old tradition that will never fade, and your guests look forward to you strutting your stuff for the first time as a couple. But there’s no need to ruin this special moment with a cheesy pop song. Pick a memorable and unique song that you will cherish forever, and one that you won’t be embarrassed to play again ten years later.

Polished to PERFECTION Helen Dorritt tries out a Shellac manicure at HUSH Hairdressing in Bristol.

A

confession: I’m an ex nail biter. And while I managed to kick the habit a good few years ago, having long and elegant nails is not exactly what I’m known for. Playing the piano and typing lots means I tend to keep them short, and while I love a good coat of nail varnish, it’s not a regular thing with me. Second confession: I’ve only ever had two professional manicures in my life – one for my eighteenth birthday and the other for my wedding. So it was with very little knowledge about this process that I visited HUSH Hairdressing on Baldwin Street in Bristol on a chilly January day for a Shellac manicure. As soon as I arrived, however, the warm welcome I received set me at ease. The salon not only offered me a cup of coffee, but it came with a chocolate and a side order of one of my favourite songs on the radio. I then sat down with Emma Philpott, the master nail technician who runs her business from HUSH Hairdressing, who explained how a Shellac manicure worked. Shellac is a relatively new type of manicure, which offers 14+ days of wear. On the CND website, which is the manufacturer of Shellac, it boasts of “non-chip, mirror finish with zero dry time” and I can confirm that this is definitely the case. It’s incredibly hard wearing and looks super glossy – all for an investment of about 45 minutes.

Emma started by tidying my cuticles and filing my nails into a good shape before applying the main polish. I had opted for a French manicure, a delicate shell pink with white tips, which is a look that Emma says a lot of brides opt for. There is a huge range of colours, however, so any shade you fancy, you can pretty much guarantee there will be a Shellac to match it. This first coat was then set using UV light – I slid my hands into a hightech looking white box for a few minutes, after which the polish was rock-solid. Emma painted on the white tips, set them in the UV light, and then added a final top coat to seal everything. As a finishing touch, she massaged CND’s Solar oil into my nails, a cuticle oil infused with jojoba and Vitamin E, and then rubbed in some delicioussmelling Solar handcream. My hands looked and felt amazing and I couldn’t stop staring at them. Once you’ve had a Shellac manicure, Emma advises wearing gloves to do washing up and other household tasks to minimise damage. She also recommends regular application of Solar oil to keep your cuticles in tip-top condition. “The great thing about Shellac is that it’s suitable for nail biters,” says Emma. “We can put it on the shortest of nails, and it protects your natural nails and improves their condition, as well as stopping you from biting them, which helps them to grow out. It’s also perfect for your wedding,” continues Emma. “We advise brides to come in a couple of days before the wedding

to get it done. It will then last all through the honeymoon as well.” A Shellac manicure is guaranteed to last 14 days, and if any chips do occur, Emma will touch them up for free. You can have a Shellac pedicure too, which will last even longer than a manicure – at least 6 weeks. Emma also offers a removal service, which is free if you’ve had your Shellac manicure done at HUSH. It takes only 10 minutes to remove, with no damage to the natural nail. I have never had so many compliments on my hands as in the month I wore my Shellac manicure – not even on my wedding day. From friends to complete strangers, people kept commenting on how lovely they thought my hands looked. The sheer durability of Shellac was amazing too - in this period, it survived repeated typing, the repainting of my kitchen, my weekly trapeze classes and an unfortunate incident with some sticky tape attaching itself to my fingers, which would have killed off a lesser polish. With a Shellac manicure starting at £15 with Emma’s assistant Cher or £25 with Emma, this is one wedding day investment I would highly recommend - pretty, durable and the perfect backdrop for your new wedding ring.

No-one likes looking like they’re caked in make-up, but sometimes – especially for your wedding photos – you want to ensure your skin is at its best. Step forward Revlon Nearly Naked make-up, a range of foundations and pressed powders. Nearly Naked is packed with green and black tea, jojoba oil and oatmeal, to ensure skin is soothed and moisturised, and also has a broad spectrum SPF 20 to help prevent sun damage – ideal for a summer wedding. Formulated with weightless hollow silica pigments, the breakthrough make-up balances skin and makeup so they work together — allowing the makeup to mimic skin’s tone and texture. Here at West Weddings we love the 1920s, as evidenced by our Autumn photoshoot inspired by the Great Gatsby. A new premium fragrance from Yardley coincides with the re-emergence of 1920s trends, which include the release of the Baz Lurhmann film version of the Great Gatsby. Polaire is a new floral chypre scent, using pear and freesia top notes, a heart of rose, pepper and ginger and basenotes of patchouli and amber. Chypres were first introduced in 1917 and are synonymous with the Roaring Twenties, so there’s no better way to evoke this era than by wearing a modern version of the perfume that defined it. A FORCE OF

NATURE Mike Gartside talks to wedding and documentary photographer Mark Simmons about creating your definitive visual record of the day.

O

ur guests huddled around us in a clatter of shutters, as my new wife Cath and I signed the register at our wedding last summer. All the while, the lithe figure of Mark Simmons could be seen flitting around the party, present yet unobtrusive, capturing some of the most enduring memories of the day. A social documentary and wedding photographer for over 25 years, Mark has his own personable and unaffected approach to harvesting the most telling images of any happy couple’s big day. He emphasises the importance of natural photography, while also recognising the need for those big “set-piece” family shots. “Photography is one of the most important aspects of a wedding and is certainly the lasting legacy of the special day,” he says. “It’s important that you do your research to get the right photographer. So many people with

digital cameras describe themselves as ‘wedding photographers’, so check out the quality and coverage of their portfolios and be aware of the ‘feel’ of the images. Have they captured those moments that make the day special?” When you plan your photography, he says, make notes on what you like and don’t like. That way you’ll clarify to yourself and your photographer what you’re hoping to achieve with the images. “Be specific,” he says. “Think about any particular shots you’d like from the day, especially the formal group photos as well any other coverage. Your photographer should be open to what you want and offer suggestions on how to achieve this. “Some photographers are good at things like highly posed, stylised shots, but these can take a lot of time and mean you’re away from your family and friends for ages. Don’t forget, too, that some portfolios may

feature models on a photoshoot, where time is not such an issue,” says Mark. Once you’ve met one or two photographers you like the look of, says Mark, you can learn a lot about their approach by the way they talk about their work. Make sure they offer the range you are looking for and try to find out what their management style on the day might be like. For example, Cath and I were adamant we wanted to avoid one of those tyrannical photographers who spends hours barking orders at a sheepish family group. Mark, of course was the very picture of charm and tact, although not afraid to haul an errant relative into line when the need arose. “See what suggestions they have and how they will work within the schedule of the day,” he says. “Make use of their experience and knowledge of timings to develop a photography plan that is practical, realistic and fun. You’ll be spending much of your wedding with this ➻

person and at times they’ll be key to the proceedings so make sure you like and trust them.” Mark has a number of strategies to make sure the couple stay in control of the proceedings. For example, he advises that you appoint an usher or assistant to help round up relatives and keep a firm eye on the schedule – which, from my own experience, is sound advice. And a word on that thorny issue of cost… “Beware of too cheap a price,” says Mark. “There’s a lot of work involved in photographing a wedding from initial meetings and a long day’s photography with as much as a week of editing images or producing an album, so you need to be prepared to pay for this. Having said that, you can cut costs in various ways, for example getting prints and making your own album.” Mark himself is the living embodiment of the natural photography style he advocates. Relaxed yet on the ball, helpful but never overbearing, he was a real asset on our big day. During preparation, he took a note of the names of our key relatives, making sure we got all the vital family groupings without things ever becoming stuffy or stultifying. His art was to be in the right place at the right time, without pushing himself into the foreground. And, needless to say, the pictures were wonderful, ranging from ravishing to cute to laugh-out-loud funny – a true memory of one of the most special days of both our lives.

The blogging Wedding planning is consuming, tiring and non-stop, but there are perks to taking your plans online. Megan McMinn gives her five reasons why every bride should blog.

E

very bride-to-be knows the feeling; you’ve been talking your mum/ bridesmaid/cats ear off about all things wedding for months, and their eyes are starting to glaze over. They’re happy for you, but at the end of the day it’s not their wedding, and their excitement will never quite match your own. But you’ll go slowly insane without some kind of outlet, somewhere to vent wedding fluff to your heart’s content, without anyone attempting to change the subject or stifling a yawn. Somewhere where people’s eyes will light up when you tell them you’ve been on Pinterest all morning, and where cake flavours and colour schemes are given the time and careful consideration they deserve. Fear not, bubbling brides; there’s a place where the novelty never wears off, where countless people are waiting to share in your excitement, and where your plans and ideas are worth their weight in metaphorical gold. The world of blogging is still in its infancy; however, it’s reaching an exciting point where it’s starting to infiltrate mainstream culture. The iron is hot, and now is the time to strike. Here are just five key reasons why your wedding plans are crying out to be preserved, in sickness and in health, on their own little corner of the internet!

A place to vent

People read wedding blogs because they’re actively seeking out the juicy details of other people’s big days. Whether they’re planning their own wedding, battling the post-wedding blues or are simply fascinated with the sparkling world of cakes and veils, they are

on your blog because they’re as in love with the planning process as you are. There’s no shame here in spending weeks obsessing over the perfect, transfer-proof, long-lasting lipstick - oh no. Your readers will be ready and waiting with suggestions and everappropriate levels of excitement, enthusiasm and admiration.

A wide world of inspiration

The blogosphere is bubbling over with creative ideas and fun details that you - in the dizzying journey that is wedding planning would be unlikely to think of on your own. Not a crafty bone in your body? A few hours of blog browsing and you’ll be reaching for the hot glue and twine. Never considered yourself to be thrifty? Look at a few budget weddings on blogs such as Rock’n’Roll Bride and Whimsical Wonderland Weddings, and you’ll suddenly find yourself with a bit of spare cash in the honeymoon fund. It’s addictive, and it’ll help you to truly put your individual stamp on your big day.

An online record of your plans

Wedding planning is many things - fun, stressful, exciting, nauseating - but if we can all agree on one thing, it’s that time speeds up threefold the moment you set the date. In the rush it’s easy to lose track of yourself, taking the little things like meeting up with your bridesmaids for granted. Writing a blog helps you keep your plans and ideas neatly in check, and it can even act as a little scrapbook documenting all of the special events along the way.

A forum to meet other brides

If you’re lucky, your bridal party is probably everything you could ever ask for in a support network; however, I’m sure it’s all too common for a bride to feel that she’s lacking a shoulder to laugh and cry on. The wedding blogging community shares your wedding love - and wedding woes - so you can pretty much guarantee that there’s someone out there who you’ll hit it off with. Whether it’s another bride, a wedding industry veteran or simply an enthusiast, someone out there is more than willing to share in your wedding delights and pains. You might even make a friend for life!

Combat the post-wedding blues

Think ahead to the months after your wedding. Yes, you will be married to the love of your life, and truly starting your lives together as a marital unit, but the feeling will be somewhat bittersweet. The magic of dress shopping, cake tasting and pretty things will be behind you, reduced to a few mementos and a lovingly assembled photo album (and quite possibly some sugary video footage that’ll make you smile, and at the same time want to hide behind the nearest cushion). Whether you just continue reading wedding blogs to whet your appetite, or if you start featuring and writing about other people’s weddings on your own blog, it’s a surefire way to share in the sparkle - with someone else footing the bill this time!

MY BIG FAT

WEDDING

Helen Dorritt looks at ways to make your wedding eco-friendly.

T

here’s no getting away from it – weddings and civil partnerships can certainly have a massive impact on your carbon footprint. Whether it’s a small affair of your closest family and friends, or a knees up with 150 guests, it can sometimes be hard to reconcile your principles with your desire to have the day of your dreams. But there are some simple, easy steps you can take to ensure your celebration doesn’t compromise your ethics. After all, the day you make a positive commitment with your partner shouldn’t also be the day that you have a negative impact on the environment or other people.

Location, location, location Choosing where to have your ceremony and reception is one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make about the day. If you’re planning a low impact wedding or civil partnership, you’ll be pleased to hear that the South West has some fantastic eco-friendly venues which actively seek out ways to minimise the carbon footprint of the celebrations they host. Riverstation in Bristol and the Longhouse in Bruton are just two, with the former having its own beehives on a ‘green’ roof and offering bike and boat mooring for customers, and the latter using solar power and geo-thermic heating to power its events. Riverstation also hosted the first eco wedding fair in the South West, an event which is returning on Saturday 26th October 2013. For more venue information, the Natural Wedding Company’s website has a comprehensive list which covers this region as well as the rest of the UK. Even if your venue doesn’t actively

market itself as eco-friendly, there are lots of questions you can ask to ensure your day is that little bit greener. Check the food they’re planning to serve – does the chef use local, seasonal produce? Is any meat organic and free range? Do they serve tap water instead of bottled mineral water?

Blooming marvellous Insisting on peonies in February will mean your flowers will rack up more air miles than you going on your honeymoon. Keep your floral decorations sustainable, seasonal and organic and this will have a massive impact on your green credentials. Some florists even offer the option for you to have flowers grown especially for your ceremony – both eco-friendly and romantic. A number of local florists provide sustainable flowers, including Bella and Fifi and Organic Blooms in Bristol and JW Blooms in Somerset.

A paperless wedding The rise of the internet means that you can easily keep your wedding paperless these days. Eschew traditional paper and card invitations for an emailed one. Bristol designer Rachel Goodchild can create customised electronic invitations for you which can then simply be emailed to recipients. You can also have a wedding website to give guests information about the day, either making it through free software such as Wordpress or hosting it via wedding websites such as The Knot which provide easy to use templates. And think of the time you’ll save in licking and sticking envelopes!

Think vintage Using preloved, antique and vintage objects can be a great way to minimise your nuptial impact. With a little bit of thought, you can ensure things you use for your day aren’t disposable items you’ll never use again. Buying a vintage dress saves any dilemmas over present day sweat shop labour and can easily be adapted to your ideal shape and style using local dressmakers. Or opt for a second hand, preloved dress - eBay is a treasure trove of things to wear, and you can also try sites such as Preloved. Galateia Gowns in Bristol sells a great range of preworn wedding dresses and other items. Afterwards, consider donating your outfits to the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, a charity that organises weddings for terminally ill people, or to charity shops such as Oxfam or Tenovus which have a dedicated bridal section. When it comes to decorating your venue, there are so many ways to incorporate vintage items. One couple I knew hunted down stacks of old Penguin books for their table centrepieces and then gave them away as favours afterwards. Rhiannon Davies from Bristol, who is getting married this July, found a cache of embroidered linen tablecloths at her late grandmother’s house, which she is planning to use on her tables. “It’s lovely having objects at our wedding that aren’t throwaway and can be re-used afterwards,” she says. “Having my gran’s tablecloths there will also a great reminder of her and my visits to her house as a child.”

All that glitters... They may be advertised as a girl’s best friend, but diamonds can have a hidden price of blood,

sweat and tears. Luckily, awareness is rising in jewellers’ circles regarding the provenance of these stones. If you decide to have diamonds in your engagement ring or wedding band, have a chat with your jeweller to check that they are certified conflict-free through the Kimberley Process, or that they are ethically sourced from countries such as Canada. Gold can also have a dirty provenance, so make sure anything you buy is certified as Fairmined. One alternative is to have an antique ring (see the section on think vintage), as not only are you recycling, but you’re also getting a ring already soaked with history. If there’s not a family heirloom you can use, then visiting antique shops and markets usually yields an excellent selection. Another idea is remodelling an existing piece of your jewellery into something brand new, a service that several local jewellers, such as Clifton Rocks, offer clients. So if your great aunt left you a brooch that you know you’ll never wear, you can turn it into a unique ring that encapsulates some of your family history as well as keeping it greener.

Considerate gifts Ah, the gift list, that contentious beast. Some couples love them, some think they’re the devil in disguise. If you are leaning towards a gift list, however, it doesn’t just have to be just presents from John Lewis or Debenhams. For something that little bit different, try E-Wedding List, a flexible online wedding gift list which allows you to put down presents you’d like from any website or source. This means that if you’d rather have a 1970s Kenwood mixer than a brand new one, you can link to a site that sells them, or post a picture

so your guests can try and hunt one down in a charity shop or car boot sale. Another more quirky choice for an online gift list is Not On The High Street, which offers a massive range of items made right here in the UK. You’ll keep your air miles down and support local businesses as well as getting good quality presents – a win-win situation. Or for the ultimate in ethical wedding gift lists, ask your guests to donate to charity, either using an online gift page or through good old fashioned cheques.

A GRAND

AFFAIR Ellie Pipe finds Eastington Park to be an affordable luxury for your big day.

I

f your dream wedding involves you being swept off your feet in the grandeur of a stately home, then you need look no further than the beautiful and infinitely grand Eastington Park. A regal, tree-lined drive will lead you to this quintessential 18th century manor house, set amidst eight acres of fine English country gardens with a stunning backdrop of rural Gloucestershire. The venue boasts an elegant, pillared entrance and sweeping grounds to set the scene for your wedding day. It is fully licensed and available on an exclusive 24 hour hire basis, affording you the luxury of immersing yourself in the fairy tale, even if just for a day. Of course every fairy tale can benefit from a few modern twists and this venue comes fully equipped with a top class management team, superb facilities, award winning caterers and a 24 hour alcohol and entertainment licence, so that your perfect day can continue well into the night. Eastington Park boasts not one, but four licensed wedding spots. Choose the opulent and picturesque ballroom overlooking the

beautiful gardens for an elegant ambiance and seating for 120 guests. The drawing room, with a magnificent focal fireplace is an intimate setting for 90 people. Or, keep things fresh and friendly with a ceremony in the garden room and take full advantage of the floor to ceiling windows which provide you and 50 guests with a perfect view of the stunning grounds. Or if the weather is playing ball, you can make use of the beautiful wrought iron pergola in the ‘secret garden’ area. You can be forgiven for wanting to make a grand entrance on this one day of your life and what better prop could you ask for than the beautifully dramatic spiral staircase that acts as a centrepiece to the house? After your vows have been said, the cake sampled and your first dance as a married couple has been followed by several more, you can then glide up the spiral staircase to the four poster bed in the luxury bridal suite. Eastington Park can accommodate 70 guests with bed and breakfast and offers easy access to Bath, Bristol and Cheltenham. The perfect wedding package is in fact just a stone’s throw away, so you can get swept up in the moment knowing that the details are taken care of.

A WHOLE HOST OF

DELIGHTS Ellie Pipe finds the glass is always half full at Cadbury House.

C

adbury House – the name alone conjures up images of an enchanting place full of treats and delights. Actually that’s not so far from the truth as this fabulous four star boutique hotel is one wedding venue that really does have it all. The location is just on the outskirts of Bristol and surrounded by the rolling English countryside. Since Cadbury House has been taken under the prestigious wing of the Hilton Hotel group, its reputation for excellence has grown, making this one of the most soughtafter local venues. With breath-taking views across Bristol and Wales, a contemporary, luxurious style and a revitalising on-site spa, it’s easy to see why Doubletree by Hilton Cadbury House (to give it its full title) is so in demand. All of this splendour hasn’t gone to its head though, and the hotel offers a number of surprisingly reasonable signature wedding packages available from as little as £2013. Each package is comprehensive, with enough options to suit your every need and the wonderful attention to detail that really sets Cadbury House apart. The venue has a dedicated wedding coordinator as well as an experienced, professional team, so you can be safe in the knowledge that your wedding is in capable

hands. For something a little bit extra special, the flexible team are more than happy to work with you to create the tailor-made wedding of your dreams. For the foodies amongst you, rest assured that the all-important dining element of your wedding day will be well catered for. Top quality food is a priority at Cadbury House which has a long-standing reputation for fine dining. The accomplished chefs work hard to create contemporary and classic favourites, using the finest quality ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible. The head chef is also happy to look at bespoke menus to suit your particular preferences. The hotel plays host to a number of chic rooms for your ceremony, which are licensed for civil marriage ceremonies and same gender commitment ceremonies. For a summer wedding though, who could resist the romantic statement of an al fresco ceremony under the thatched gazebo which is advantageously positioned to provide a backdrop of the most sensational views across Bristol? As if all of that isn’t enough, Cadbury House will also throw in a night in their luxury suite for the happy couple. So it’s true, Cadbury House really does provide the full romantic package. Book your wedding at this unique venue and you can look forward to a real treat.

FIT FOR A

QUEEN Ellie Pipe travels down to Devon to find a hidden gem.

L

et’s be honest, if you are going to transport yourselves and your guests further afield in the West Country for your wedding, Plymouth isn’t everyone’s first choice. Good as a gateway to Cornwall, or a night out if sailors are your kind of thing, but an idyllic wedding location - really? Well, sceptics, prepare to be surprised because a wee journey down the M5 may just prove worthwhile to find the hidden gem that is St Elizabeth’s House. This luxury boutique hotel is situated in the historic village of Plympton St Maurice in South Devon. Flanked by (appropriately!) majestic green-leafed trees, St Elizabeth’s House stands as regally as its name would suggest, steeped in history and surrounded by 5 acres of beautifully manicured lawns. First impressions certainly set the scene for a romantic wedding to remember. The interior of this traditional Georgian manor exudes an effortless air of luxury and manages to strike the perfect balance of elegance and comfort. St Elizabeth’s is available for exclusive hire from Friday to Sunday, meaning that you and your guests can relax and explore the idyllic surroundings unhindered. And they certainly are worth exploring. The elegant reception area leads through to the wood-

polished main room, where large doors open out onto the splendid sun terrace, a truly lovely spot just perfect for serving refreshing reception drinks and soaking up some summer rays. There is a choice of two beautifully fashioned rooms to host civil ceremonies, or the local church is a five minute walk up the road. St Elizabeth’s also has an experienced wedding coordinator to ensure that your every wish is accommodated. The wedding breakfast can be served in the relaxed ambience of the restaurant (for up to 62 guests) or the luxury marquee for optimum views of the sweeping lawns. Whatever the location you will certainly be in for a treat, as the menu is devised by award-winning head chef Daniel Gillard. Daniel has created many different mouthwatering options to suit your needs and, where possible, uses fresh, local ingredients. For relaxing after the ceremony, there are 15 luxury en suite rooms which maintain the same high quality and effortless style as the rest of the hotel. The pièce de resistance is the bridal suite which epitomises sheer luxury and includes a Jacuzzi tub set into the stone floor – a simply irresistible decadence, and one which will certainly start your married life on the right foot.

Should YOUR MAN help you

PLAN Samantha Merritt believes men should have an input on their wedding day, but Gianina Baba believes it should be left to the bride.

Yes

BBC3’s Don’t Tell the Bride doesn’t help my argument here, as most of the men on the hit television show are pretty clueless when it comes to knowing what their bride wants. But I believe women should let men have an input on their wedding day - after all, it’s their special day too. Planning a wedding is one of the most stressful times for any woman. You’ve dreamed up this perfect day in your head since you were a little girl, playing dress up in your mum’s veil and wobbly strutting your stuff in her ‘too big for you’ wedding shoes. So why wouldn’t you want all the help you can get? You obviously trust your husband-to-be otherwise you wouldn’t be marrying him; let him take away half the stress and help you plan. Planning a wedding is also a chance for a couple to bond. Sharing ideas over what they both think their day should entail and picking out wedding invitations together will make it all the more real. Of course, there are bound to be a few disagreements along the way but that’s a great way for you both to prepare for married life. From picking out the perfect venue to sampling the wedding cake, picking out the table flowers to choosing your wedding bands, it’s all a chance for you to come together and make the day right for the both of you. The only part of the planning process that should be kept a secret from your groom is the wedding gown. This is a great chance to have a girly day with your mum and friends. And the look on your groom’s face as you walk down the aisle to him will be one of pleasant surprise and pure happiness. You definitely don’t want to lose that.

No

Planning a wedding is without a doubt the most exciting project for a brideto-be, while grooms tend to lack enthusiasm for all things pretty and romantic. Once a suitable budget and guestlist has been agreed on by the two of you, I say use your skills and creativity to plan the details for the day and keep the groom out of it. Armed with a stack of wedding magazines and carefully bookmarked websites, we ladies are more than happy to allocate every free minute we have to carefully prepare for our special day with enthusiasm and dedication. Grooms, on the other hand, usually find the stress of such an experience too much to bear. The thought of looking through magazines horrifies them, and trawling round wedding fairs for hours? Forget about it. Wedding planning is also a great opportunity to involve other ladies, with

mums, sisters and friends all getting in on the act. It is very common to see mothers and daughters going to wedding fairs and looking round venues in search of their dream location, while men always seem to be there under sufferance. For the task of finding the perfect dress and accessories, again, women are the best advisors, as they can add the right amount of excitement and emotion to the experience. And while a groom should definitely have input into what he wears, there’s no denying that women also have a better idea of what suits their men. Let’s face it, grooms know they can trust their future wives to make the best choices for their wedding day, and they also like the surprise element that comes with it. Taking responsibility for all aspects of your big day doesn’t make you a bridezilla, but a caring and well organised bride-to-be, which your fiancé will love you for even more.
