For those of you reading the magazine for the first time, congratulations on your engagement! As usual, this issue is a celebration of the best that the West can offer you for your wedding, and I hope you find lots of inspiration in the pages. We’re so lucky to have such a thriving wedding industry in the region, something which is illustrated in our report on page 15 on the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards, which are a great celebration of all the talent in this part of the world as well as being a fundraiser for fantastic local charity The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation. Clevedon Hall was where I attended my first ever photoshoot for West Weddings, so it was lovely to be back there this year. Taking inspiration from French chateau weddings, our talented team created some stunning photos that are full of grace and elegance — turn to page 47 to see them. As it’s summer, our thoughts turn to outdoor weddings so we’ve picked five gorgeous garden venues over on page 78 which are ideal for open air vows. You want to look your absolute best for your wedding, so head to page 62 for our pick of the latest beauty products, page 68 for the perfect summer bridal make-up looks and page 74 for luxurious spas and treatments, all to help you get W-Day ready from head to foot! Plus there’s all our usual features including some beautiful new gowns on page 26, ideas for grooms on page 39 and four fab real life weddings on page 18. Enjoy!

orth Somerset based photographer Lee Hatherall is expanding his trophy cabinet this year after winning awards from two national associations. He took home three national merits from the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, one in the classical weddings category and two in the avant garde category. Then in February Lee scooped two regional awards with the British Institute of Professional Photography, with a bronze in portrait and a merit in wedding classical. Entry to these competitions is fierce, so Lee was extremely happy to have his work recognised from such a wide pool of photographers. ’s Three time the charm Sometimes it’s good to take a break from planning your own wedding and enjoy reading about someone else’s, which is why we loved the new novel by Lindsey Kelk, Always the Bridesmaid. Maddie has stood up for lots of her friends, but this time round she has to deal with a best friend becoming a bridezilla as her other best friend heads for marriage meltdown, at the same time as juggling a chance of promotion and her own men problems. Reminiscent of Bridget Jones, this is a fun, frothy read that’s sure to raise a smile from anyone who’s ever been a part of a wedding! Happy birthday to The White Collection! C
ongratulations to bridal shop The White Collection, which is celebrating its first year in its Clevedon home. Owner Lea Watson’s aim was to create a beautiful boutique with an amazing choice of dresses and accessories but also, most importantly, deliver a friendly and relaxed environment where the bride and guests are made to feel very special, unpressured and confident in the service that’s provided. “A large part of my business is through referrals so this appears to be working!” says Lea. “The first year has been amazing; we have been made to feel extremely welcome by all the local people and businesses, and we seem to have arrived on Hill Road at an exciting time of transformation with lots of redevelopment and new businesses to add to the already existing fabulous businesses that are already there.” The White Collection has an exquisite range of designers, including being one of the largest stockists in the South West for the ever-popular Charlotte Balbier, and showcasing the vintage-inspired dresses of Annasul Y. The shop has recently expanded its range to include Sydney-based designer Karen Willis Holmes, whose dresses have more of a bohemian feel. And as well as dresses, Lea also offers a selection of handmade bespoke accessories. “Accessories are my thing and how I got into owning my own bridal shop in the beginning,” she explains. “It’s nice to be able to work closer with my brides and create unique accessories for them to complete their whole bridal look, often incorporating old family heirloom jewellery into something new and special for the bride to wear.” THE WHITE COLLECTION 30 HILL ROAD, CLEVEDON, NORTH SOMERSET BS21 7PH T: 01275 876056/ 07800 718580 W: WWW.THEWHITECOLLECTIONBRIDAL.CO.UK
Double celebration It’s been a good start to the year for Sean Horton and Toni Harper. After a three year engagement, the couple got married this March at Cadbury House as a result of winning Bristol newspaper The Post’s ‘Win a Wedding’ competition, which meant that the £12,000 cost of their wedding was donated by local suppliers including The Bridal Room, Tin Can Floral and The Icing Centre. And this was a double celebration, as the couple were not only toasting their nuptials but also the imminent birth of their first baby. Sean and Toni, from Knowle in Bristol, have been friends since childhood when Sean was a girl called Sian. When Sean decided he wanted to transition to being a man, Toni was the first person he told. They both went their separate ways for a while, but grew close again when they both finished other relationships. Sean has undergone five years of hormone therapy and surgery to reassign his gender, and their happiness was complete when Toni became pregnant with their son. When the couple first got engaged they fell in love with the idea of a wedding at Cadbury House, but several setbacks, including Sean’s father becoming seriously ill, meant that the wedding had to be postponed and the venue shelved. When Sean spotted the competition, it felt like fate, and after being declared the winners, the couple tied the knot at this gorgeous hotel on 28th March. “It means everything to us to get married. We’ve been waiting ages to do this!” says Toni. 8

ristol-based wedding fair organiser The Word on Weddings has a busy summer coming up, with a number of events across the region in gorgeous venues. Following on from the resounding success of its first ever wedding fair at Walton Castle in March, the venue is holding an open evening there again on 18th June from 5.30-9pm. This stunning venue is nestled in the hills of Clevedon and is a well-kept secret, but for all those brides wanting a fairytale wedding this is definitely a venue to consider. Hopefully a beautiful summer evening will show the castle at its very best and you’ll be able to have a tour around and see the fabulous refurbishment of this stunning venue. On 12th July from 1-4pm, The Word on Weddings will be at Bailbrook House Hotel, a country house hotel located just a few minutes from the centre of historic Bath. This is one of the only Grade II* listed hotels in Bath, set within 20 acres of private grounds with commanding views towards the centre of the city and the adjoining countryside. Visitors can enjoy a free goody bag and a welcome drink for the first 50 through the door. Then it’s off to one of the region’s newest venues, the Keynsham Community Space above the library, on Sunday 19th July from 11am-2pm for the venue’s inaugural wedding fair. This new build space has a fresh feel and has beautiful full length glass windows affording views along the high street. Entry is always free to The Word on Weddings’ fairs, and there are lots of special offers on the day from exhibitors. More details can be found on its Facebook page, and if you’re a business interested in exhibiting, give Brigette Linton-Butt a call or email on the details below.

his season, Love Actually Weddings is once again hosting a number of summer wedding fairs across the region to help you plan your special day. There’s something for everyone, whether you are just searching for suppliers or have yet to find your dream wedding venue. The first event will see organisers David and Emma back at The Bristol Zoo, Clifton Pavilion on Sunday 7th June. The Clifton Pavilion provides the perfect setting for your wedding ceremony, reception and evening party. Built in the 1920s, the building’s graceful architecture offers elegant rooms with beautiful views overlooking the west lawn. With its high vaulted ceiling and chandeliers, the Clifton Suite offers a stunning backdrop for both the wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast for up to 120 guests. The Garden Room is light and airy with a patio leading out in to the gardens, and is a great space for your reception drinks and evening party for up to 150 guests. The second summer special takes place at Farrington Park in Farrington Gurney on 28th June, a brand new venue for Love Actually. This venue can hold civil ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions in either of the two function suites. The larger Montgomerie Suite has a beautiful balcony overlooking the picturesque countryside and seats up to 90 guests for the breakfast and up to 170 people for the evening celebrations. The following month, David and Emma are back in the city and host the At-Bristol Wedding Show on 12th July. As one of the city’s landmark attractions in the urban heart of Bristol’s Harbourside, this venue can offer a simple ceremony in the sunlit Annexe, a reception in the impressive Rosalind Franklin Room or a ceremony under a thousand glittering stars in the stunning Planetarium. The private outdoor sun terrace overlooking the impressive Millennium Square and beautiful harbour is the perfect setting, day and night! Love Actually’s final summer event will be held at the wonderful Castle Hotel in Taunton on 19th July. If you have ever dreamt of getting married in a grand Somerset castle, then look no further. It has a number of rooms licensed for your ceremony, including the exclusive Penthouse, located at the top of the hotel. The largest ceremony room is the grand Music Suite, with high ceilings and space for up to 80 guests. Admission is always free with Love Actually, so any of the events mentioned above are worth visiting to help you plan your own wedding. Organisers Emma and David commented: “Our summer events are always special and have a unique buzz, with the sun shining and the brides-to-be in ‘wedding mode’, probably because they’ve attended someone else’s the week before!”

Question: We’re hiring a marquee for our wedding and I’m not sure how to decorate it, as it’s so large. Do you have any suggestions?
Question: I really want my wedding at a country mansionstyle venue but I’m struggling with my budget. Are there any ways I can make my dream a reality?
Question: My friend wants to bring her new partner to our wedding, but I’ve not meet him and don’t want to have people there I don’t know. Am I being selfish?
Martha Fisher, Bristol
Sylvia Barker, Bristol
Jenny Macmillan, Keynsham
Jane Eveleigh of Beez Neez Bunting says:
Mary Lonican, Venue Sales Manager at Eastwood Park says:
Helen Dorritt, editor of West Weddings says:
Answer: Styling a marquee can be a bit overwhelming! In a large tented ceiling, brightly-coloured flags which are closer together have more impact than wider spaced flags. Large marquees can also take bolder colour combinations to a greater effect. A bunting company will be able to advise on suitable bunting layouts and estimate the amount required from the size and type of marquee, allowing for draping. My top tip is that some marquees have cotton liners, which means the bunting must be installed as the tent is erected, so it’s very important to have ordered the bunting to be ready at the same time as the tent. Here at Beez Neez we have a range of ready made bunting which can be sent out to you straightaway, and with notice we can create bespoke bunting completely to your specifications.
Answer: One way is being flexible on dates! Often venues have times of the year or day when they are prepared to offer exceptional offers. Short notice deals are certainly something to consider too. Here at Eastwood Park we’ve just launched four new offers, which are budget friendly yet have everything you need — even the venue exclusively to yourself! We have our late availability wedding offer 2015, available on selected dates throughout the year. Alternatively, celebrate towards the end of the day, with our late ceremony and reception offer, allowing you to get straight on with the party after the marriage. Also on offer is a 2016 wedding package and a winter weddings deal, so there really is something to suit everyone’s tastes. These packages are outstanding value and give you the country house wedding of your dreams in a very affordable way!
Answer: The issue of plus ones can always be a little tricky, especially when people start to assume that they can invite their partner. If it’s just that you don’t know your friend’s new boyfriend, then you should go on a night out with the two of them and your fiancé before the wedding. The new boyfriend will appreciate this too, so the first time he meets you it isn’t over a glass of Champagne and with you in a wedding dress! If you’re struggling with fitting in numbers with your budget, however, be honest with your friend and say that you have family and friends you need to prioritise, but that if there’s space you may be able to invite him. To be honest, if he doesn’t know you, your partner or anyone else at the wedding except for his girlfriend, then I doubt he’ll mind too much about not being invited anyway!

Pie-fection! J
udges at the British Pie Awards fell head over in heels in love with Bristol-based Pieminister’s wedding drum pie, which won a prestigious Gold Medal in this year’s innovation class. This competition is seen as an opportunity for Britain’s best piemakers to pull out all the stops and let their creative culinary skills run wild, which Pieminister’s Tristan Hogg seized the chance to do. Inspired by one of his favourite films, Stanley Tucci’s Big Night, Tristan based his recipe on a traditional timpano (drum) pie, as featured in the film’s infamous scene, and created a pie filled with Ziti pasta, tender meatballs, chunks of Genoa salami, cheese and quail’s eggs in a rich ragu sauce made with beef shin, pork
ribs, fresh oregano, garlic and plenty of Chianti. In fact, Tristan was so proud of the final result when it came out of the oven, his colleagues had to literally prise the pie out of his hands to be sent to Melton Mowbray for judging! “This is the ultimate feast for special occasions and a real labour of love, so it’s the perfect ‘big night’ pie for a lucky bride,” says Tristan. If this sounds like your kind of wedding food, you’ll be pleased to hear that Pieminister offers its delicious pies for weddings. The company even has a nuptial inspiration board over on Pinterest! Country charm If your perfect wedding venue oozes romance and luxury, then you need to head over to Tortworth Court. This Grade II listed Victorian venue offers a pretty Cotswolds setting for your ceremony and reception, with a honey-coloured stone house that sits in beautiful gardens, overlooking a lake and surrounded by open countryside. Whetted your appetite? Then add this date to your diary: on Tuesday 30th June Tortworth is holding an open evening from 6.30-8.30pm where you can enjoy a glass of Champagne and some canapés while chatting to the events team and the venue’s preferred suppliers. And if you book a wedding at the venue for a date in 2015, you can enter its fab competition to win a £10,000 nest egg to start your married life together. A night to remember G lamour and glitz were the order for the evening on 27th February, when the second annual Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards were held at The Bristol Hotel. These awards are a fantastic way for local talent in the wedding industry to be recognised and applauded. “Until 2013’s launch, there was no other award ceremony to cover this region,” explains Jo Robbins from Jo and Co, who was one of the event’s organisers and sponsors. “We considered this a travesty, and sought to reward the most dedicated and talented wedding suppliers in the region — no mean feat when you consider the absolute wealth of suppliers in and around Bristol and Somerset, many of whom are small, independent businesses.” Held in support of The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, a charity that helps to organise weddings for terminally ill people, the awards were the subject of much secrecy during the lead up. A Cirque du Soleil theme was kept a carefully guarded secret until the night itself, where guests got to enjoy a host of circus-themed entertainment. There was also facial art provided by Grace Kingsley, a DJ, a fun photo booth and photography by Eve Dunlop and Samantha Jane Photography. Photographs of the evening were available for purchase after the awards, with all payments being donated to The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation. The awards were presented by The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation’s Naomi Thomas and the charity’s ambassador Lee Bishop, of Strawberry Field Events and Catering. Awarding in categories including transport, wedding blog, venue, entertainment, bridal wear and catering, no stone was left unturned when it came to celebrating Bristol, Somerset and the surrounding areas’ incredible wedding talent. Among the winners were familiar faces from West Weddings’ photoshoots, including Bridezillas, A Class Brides, Pretty Amazing Cakes, Tracy Pallari Makeup, Stacey Jade Hair Design, Interlace Photography and England’s Finest Wedding Cars, as well as our creative director Kirsten Butler, aka The Little Wedding Helper, triumphing in the venue styling category! A full list of winners is on the awards’ website. Amongst all the fun and frivolity was a truly emotional epicentre, and those in attendance on the night did Naomi and her fantastic team proud, raising over £3,500. This total is an incredible leap from last year’s handsome amount of £1,200, and was only achievable via attendees’ generous

emma and Adam met five years ago when they found themselves camping next to each other in Newquay, and it didn’t take long for romance to blossom. Her big, pretty eyes were what attracted Adam straight away, he confesses, while his dark features immediately caught her attention. Two years on, Adam popped the question while on holiday in Cyprus as the couple took an evening stroll along the beach. “Adam chose the ring but he knew I wanted a classic engagement ring. He even got the correct size by matching it to his little finger!” Gemma says. Gemma admits that she wanted Adam’s proposal to be a private moment between the two of them, with Cyprus being the perfect location, but for their wedding ceremony, they opted for a family affair at St Mary’s Church in Langford. “I grew up in Langford and wanted a traditional wedding so our local village church was the perfect choice!” Gemma explains. It was also important to them both that the location of their reception ticked all the boxes of “accommodation, beautiful grounds for all our photos and a great terrace area for the drinks reception,” which they found at the Aztec Hotel in Bristol. “Lauren, the hotel’s wedding planner, was very helpful the whole way through. Everyone loved the food and we were able to go to a taster evening to help pick our menu,” Gemma adds. Planning the rest of the day went very smoothly. “We are very similar so agreeing things was easy!” Gemma happily admits, which also included a desire to design and make all their own stationery and favours. The theme

for the day was a vintage garden party, which was enhanced with a classic, car from Triggol’s Vintage cars. Gemma’s sister, Katie was maid of honour, her best friend Charlotte was a bridesmaid, her cousins Ruby and Hannah were flower girls and Adam’s nephew, Danté was a page boy. To choose their dresses and accessories, Gemma visited Future Brides in Bristol and was made to feel like royalty by their friendly staff. “I would highly recommend Future Brides. The staff are lovely and my bridal party and I loved the whole experience of picking our dresses.” With some unexpected sunshine just in time for the ceremony after predictions of all day rain, Gemma and Adam’s wedding was off to a spectacular start and the day was expertly captured by Martin Dabek Photography. Although everything went to plan, there were a few unexpected moments that the happy couple took in their stride and were pleased to have documented by their photographer. “Whilst having photos by the Suspension Bridge, my garter had fallen down to my ankle and it was sometime before either of us noticed,” Gemma recalls. “In the evening, the band — and a few drinks! — helped everyone show off their moves on the dancefloor,” she adds. “Both of these moments were captured by Martin which made it even better!” “The whole day went perfectly, but walking down the aisle as husband and wife was my favourite moment - followed closely by putting my slippers on for the evening reception!” admits Gemma.
With a honeymoon in Cyprus to look forward to, Gemma and Adam couldn’t wait to return to where it all began. “It only felt right to go back to Cyprus where we got engaged — plus, it’s the island of love!”

octors John and Lucy met through friends on a camping trip to Devon during a boiling hot bank holiday weekend. “Our mutual respect for Cheryl Cole ‘as an artist’, Lucy’s love of tepid tea and a cheeky kiss was enough to secure a first date back in Bath,” says John. The path of true love nearly didn’t run smoothly, however; within a month of meeting, John thought Lucy was having second thoughts about the relationship as she decided to move to Edinburgh for work. “She was packed and had sorted accommodation, but in the final hour decided to stay put in the South West. She still claims it was a career related decision, but I think it was because she couldn’t stand living that far away from me! Either way, it was the best decision she ever made — well, that, and deciding to go camping a few weeks previously!” After a proposal by the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the couple got married in March 2014, with a ceremony at St Luke’s and St Andrew’s Church, Priston, followed by a reception at the Tithe Barn at Priston Mill. “The church has a unique layout, beautiful stained glass windows and a warm and welcoming vicar,” explains Lucy. “We both fell in love with the church immediately, although I was concerned that my dress wouldn’t allow me to fit down the narrow aisle, and I couldn’t share this concern with John without disclosing details of what I would be wearing! Luckily my gown had plenty of space on the day.” And the couple describe Priston Mill as “stunning – as soon as we walked down the winding pathway, we both knew we wouldn’t be looking anywhere else. It just felt like the place where we wanted to spend our wedding day.” The couple planned the celebrations

themselves, with help in the run up from family and friends. “Planning the wedding was loads of fun, and it also taught us the skill of compromise!” says John. “Our immediate family were amazing, too, following Lucy’s army style instructions and spreadsheets to the T, with very little complaining!” The theme for the day was ‘over the rainbow’, which was accentuated with a sumptuous five tier, multi-coloured cake by made friend Julia Ryley and striking flowers by Coates Florist. “The only hiccup came when the flowers were delivered late, with a buttonhole missing, resulting in the father of the groom having to improvise with some of the table centrepiece flowers. Oh, and a call to the oblivious bride midmorning to explain why they were running late — slight panic alert! Oh well, every wedding needs its hiccup,” says John philosophically. Photography was very important to both John and Lucy, who wanted reportage style without too many line-ups, so Marcus Ward of Bigeye Photography filled this brief beautifully. “Marcus was fabulous from start to finish, unobtrusively capturing the girls getting ready, the guests arriving and throughout the day. He was excellent at photographing our guests at their most natural. We love the photos, and he is one to recommend,” enthuses Lucy. Despite a foggy start, the sun made an appearance and guests were able to enjoy canapés and Champagne on the lawn of the Mill, which was “quite a surprise for March in the West Country!” Some guests may have had too much fizz, however: “there was many a highly entertaining dance off, and some precarious dirty dancing lifts on the dance floor!” Another highlight was the best man’s speech. “John was dressed up in his old
chemistry lab specs, and made to down different concoctions from test tubes, each revealing a different embarrassing story about him with a suitably fitting piece of advice for me. It turned out that I didn’t know everything there was to know about John!” Lucy explains. “It was incredible to see all our ideas and hard work come together to become such a spectacle,” says John. “I loved every minute — it’s so rare that you get to have everyone important to you in one room.” Lucy agrees. “Our wedding was absolutely perfect! Being surrounded by everyone we love was amazing. All of our planning came together so well; the combinations of colour, cake area, table designs — even the sun came out to play. But above all, I got to marry my best friend.”

rom the very first day at college Bobby couldn’t take his eyes off Katie. “Her beauty glowed in the sunshine,” he recalls, so he primed a friend to approach her during lunch and let her know she had an admirer! “I glanced over to see a tall, dark and handsome guy sporting a big ‘fro. As a mature student of a mere 21, I was slightly embarrassed in front of my peers and also seeing someone, so quickly declared I wasn’t interested,” says Katie. Throughout the school year, they would see each other here and there but never end up speaking to one another until the final day of college. Katie was heading up the stairs to the library and who came bouncing down at the exact same time? “We smiled, stopped and said ‘how are you?’” They eventually became a couple, and the rest is history. On Katie’s 30th birthday, Bobby plucked up the courage to propose while camping for the weekend with family and friends in the Gower. “Bobby took me for a walk on the beach during sunset and popped the question with one knee in the sand. The sun was glistening on the water and the fire pits in the sand dunes extended the starry skyline. It was perfect!” Katie says. It was important for the wedding to celebrate the couple’s cultural heritage of English, Jamaican and Nigerian, coming together on the day in a fusion of fashion, cuisine and music. The bride wanted to ensure that all sides of the family were represented well and authentically. “It was challenging, but we got there in the end,” she says. Guests enjoyed a range of cuisine including English, Jamaican and Nigerian and danced to a live Nigerian band. After wearing a white wedding dress for the ceremony, designed as a gift for her by her friend Jemilah, Katie changed into a buba (top) and iro (wrap) from Nigeria for the wedding breakfast and then into a dress for the evening reception that blended Nigerian lace and European style. Bobby also wore a Nigerian outfit of an agbada (robe) for the meal, then a babasora for the evening part of the wedding. There was also a special

Nigerian fabric that featured as part of the day. “My sisterhood, which included my three bridesmaids and four more friends, all had an outfit made in ankara, a Nigerian fabric which we especially selected. We also invited all guests to have a garment made in it if they wanted to take part,” says Katie. The couple chose the historic Kings Weston House for the wedding, as they wanted to have the ceremony and reception in one place. “As a little girl the grounds of Kings Weston House were my secret gardens, as a teenager I hung out with friends at the Roman ruins on the grounds, so as an adult I thought why not get married there?” explains Katie. On the day Martin of Martin Dabek Photography captured every happy moment. “Martin was great! We chose him especially for his diverse and creative approach to photography. He invited us for a complimentary engagement shoot to get to know us. He also provides a lifetime membership and has offered to photograph our first-born and each big life event thereafter,” says Katie. There was one minor nerve-racking moment for Katie before the ceremony, when she saw Bobby running across the grounds of Kings Weston House shouting — “I thought he was bailing on me!” But luckily he was only shouting at his delayed sister. In fact, Bobby couldn’t wait to marry the woman he describes as his “queen” at a ceremony where his whole family would be together for the first time since settling in the UK, and with his father passing on only three weeks after the wedding, this was a cherished part of the day. With a honeymoon trip to Mauritius to look forward to after their perfect wedding, Katie and Bobby couldn’t have been happier. For the bride the highlight of the day was easy to decide. “The ceremony was fuelled with emotion and for me was the most significant part. The exchanging of vows and support from our family and friends in saying I do was beautiful.” Bobby adds: “The blessing was my favourite
part. Pastor Tim who conducted it really added a personal touch and talked to our personalities as well as the expectation on us to love each other unconditionally.” They both agree that they put a lot of energy into the wedding to make it as great as they could, which paid off on the day and created an event that the couple was proud of. “It was a celebration to mark the most significant day of our lives to date — we were overjoyed!” The couple also agrees that they wouldn’t have been able to do it without their incredibly generous, creative and helpful family and friends.

hen asked how they met, Karen and James often use a line from a Rihanna track. “We say that we found love in a hopeless place,” explains Karen, “although the actual place was Vodka Revolution in Reading!” Karen’s friend (and future matron of honour) Rachael holds a successful reputation of playing matchmaker, and she thought that her best friend would be the perfect girl for James. His tall, dark and handsome aura drew Karen in straightaway, she admits, while for James, the dimples when she smiled were enough to reel him in. Five and a half years later, James went to great lengths to keep his proposal under wraps, and Karen was blissfully unaware that he’d asked her father’s permission until one Sunday morning he took her by surprise with a proposal. “Of course, I didn’t make it easy; bustling about the house as soon as we got up, putting a wash on before going out, causing James to demand ‘Karen, please will you just stand still!’” James wanted a wedding day that would be shared with friends and family, “to build memories that would last a lifetime.” Karen wanted to look and feel like a princess while surrounded by as many friends and family as possible, leading to “the absolute best wedding ever!” And the couple were granted their wishes, with a ceremony and reception at St Audries Park that was everything they wanted and more.

“Karen was 110% in charge, it couldn’t have worked any other way!” James admits. “She organised everything and everyone.” Having also admitted to being just a little bit OCD with her organisation, Karen was thrilled with all the suppliers that the couple used. “My wedding dress is the most beautiful dress ever and I still want to wear it 24/7, the cake was delicious and the flowers were absolutely incredible!” she enthuses. “With just a brief conversation with Philip from Buds and Blooms and a ton of images I sent him, he really managed to achieve everything I wanted and more.” For photography, Karen and James booked Martyn Baker from West Photography. “Martyn’s knowledge of the venue and experience of wedding photography shone through.” With weather that Martyn described as a “photographer’s dream”, the couple’s big day ran perfectly. The best man’s speech had everyone in stitches – “not only did he give a little surprise message from the ‘world’s most photographed puppy’, our Labradoodle Rufus, but he also produced a full sized cardboard cut out of James dressed as Borat!” Karen laughs. “Yes, there is a strange likeness, and yes, mankini style!” 18 months of planning came together flawlessly, and with a honeymoon right around the world to look forward to shortly after, travelling across every time zone in the space of
three weeks, Karen and James started married life “grinning from ear to ear with happiness.”

Ellis Bridal’s Tamsyn has straps to give you additional support as well leading the eye to your waist, while the fitted skirt shows off your hips and exaggerates how tiny your waist is.
INVERTED TRIANGLE It’s all about finding a dress that gives your figure balance, so we would recommend a dress that is fitted over the hips with a slim A-line skirt. A dress such as Kensington by Ellis Bridal has a lovely skirt that would show off your fuller figure around your hips and bottom, but would even you out on top with its off the shoulder lace detail on the bodice.
TRIANGLE If you are a triangle shape it’s important to find a dress that balances out your upper and lower body to give you a more even figure. We would highly recommend something with a fuller skirt and delicate straps or sleeves to balance your proportions. Debra by Maggie Sottero has a full skirt with a belt to cinch you in at the waist, and the low-v neck would accentuate your chest. The beaded straps aren't too thick, so they work perfectly for a bride with wider shoulders.

RECTANGLE A bride who has this sort of shape should go for a dress that has structure in it to give the illusion of curves. We would definitely pick out something with a belt to really draw your eyes to your waist. Try Joelle by Maggie Sottero, which has a beaded waist belt and delicate straps that gives you more shape on top. This dress is fitted over the hips but carries on with a gentle flare which is perfect for creating shape.
PETITE FIGURE Keep it simple to elongate your figure and stay clear of extreme fishtails which can make you look shorter. Lark by Maggie Sottero is super light and won’t drown a petite bride.
SMALL CHESTED A high neck is great for small chested brides as it gives the illusion of a fuller bust. Having a smaller bust means you don’t need as much structure to your dress and you can pull of the stunning backless dresses that everyone loves, such as London by Augusta Jones. It has a very open back and a high sheer lace neckline, ideal for anyone who wants to draw attention elsewhere.
TALL Tall brides can pull off almost any shape, so it is more on personal preference than anything else. However, very full empire line dresses can end up looking slightly tent-like on super tall brides so we would recommend avoiding them. St Patrick’s Serenela would be a perfect choice for you.

There’s something so lovely about sheer fabric on a wedding dress, as it gives a gown a delicate feeling which is perfect for this time of year. Dress designers clearly agree too, as the S/S15 catwalks were full of translucent fabric that added pretty detailing. We’ve rounded up a selection of dresses featuring this gorgeous style to showcase the different ways it can be used, varying from a hint at the back in the Romantica of Devon design to a full on sheer skirt as demonstrated in Claire Pettibone's Topanga.

The rise of the groomzilla Suzie Kidger shares some tips to tame your inner groomzilla and remain stress free
W
e’ve all heard of the term ‘bridezilla’ haven’t we? When a bride is stressed out to the absolute max and is ready to blow at any second, making everyone run for cover? Well, it would seem we women are not the only ones to get our knickers in a twist, as there is such thing as a ‘groomzilla’ too. But don’t fret guys; here are some handy tips to keep your head as cool as a cucumber.
1
DO WHAT WOMEN DO BEST: MAKE A LIST
3
BE AWARE OF YOUR BUDGET, BUT DON’T JUMP THE GUN
You might think picking the cheapest option is the quickest and easiest, but if they’re unreliable or unorganised, it’ll cause more hassle in the long run. Taking a little extra time to choose the best suppliers will save you all that grief further down the line and you won’t be going bald by the time it reaches your big day.
4
STOP WITH THE FACEBOOK UPDATES
It’s not just females that like making a list, surely? Well, now it’s time to make use of the stationery you ’borrowed’ from work and make a list of everything you need to do. From your wedding vows to the bride’s bouquet, you don’t want to be feeling all hot and bothered when you realise you’ll be walking to your wedding because you forgot to book a car.
While Facebook is a perfect place to share links on your fiancée’s wall, you might start to notice a difference in your friends list if you go a little crazy with it. And as these might be the people coming to your wedding, it’s probably wise not to bore their socks off by sharing every update, that video collage you made of your relationship or a poem you’ve written for the big day at every opportunity.
2
5
SELECT YOUR SECOND IN COMMAND
As the groom you’ve naturally got a lot of decisions to make. You might not be going wedding dress shopping, but there are arrangements to make left, right and centre so you’re going to need some help. This is where your best man comes in; let him help take some of the weight off you both and even just tag along when its your responsibility to go book your chosen venue, photographer or caterers. 40
Summer 2015_Grooms.indd 40
STEP OUT, DON’T SHOUT
You’re not the only one stressing your socks off, so when you feel like letting off some steam simply step out of the situation, rather than going roaring in the face of whoever is closest at the time. This will most definitely end in tears before bedtime and if that person is
your soon-to-be father-in-law, you could be left with a black eye for your wedding day.
6
MAKE “I’LL CONSIDER IT” YOUR NEW MANTRA
Don’t be quick to dismiss other people’s suggestions. However crazy your mother’s ideas may be, she’s only trying to help. Unless she thinks you should arrive at the ceremony by jumping out of an airplane then maybe just nod along to keep her sweet. The last thing
Weddings WEST
15/05/2015 10:10:13
GROOMS
you want is to get anyone’s back up when their support is keeping you sane in the long run.
7
DON’T BE AFRAID TO PASS THE BUCK
If you have a wedding planner helping you, don’t be afraid to let them tell suppliers that their prices are ridiculous. After all, that’s their job. This saves you from arguing about flowers down the phone for an hour when there are plenty of other things to be doing in the build up.
8
REMEMBER, YOU MIGHT NOT BE THE ONLY ‘ZILLA Let’s face it; the mother-in-law can get
Weddings WEST
Summer 2015_Grooms.indd 41
her claws out too at the drop of a rather big wedding hat. So you’re better off getting, and keeping her, on side throughout the entire planning process or she can easily make your life a nightmare. So get your charm on and be BFFs for both of your sakes.
9
BE READY TO COMPROMISE
You’re not planning your big day all on your own, remember. And while it might seem like you’re the only one holding down the fort at times, you need to be prepared to
compromise with some decisions. Your family guest list with 55 cousins may have to be pruned.
10
TAKE SOME TIME OFF
Be aware of becoming a wedding bore. You know those people that never stop telling stories about their kids? Try avoid becoming the wedding version. Nobody wants to hear all about your flower arrangements when you’re out for the evening. Set aside a day each week where the ‘W’ word is banned and just kick back and relax before it all takes over. 41

ithin the luxurious grounds of Clevedon Hall, West Weddings channelled French chic to create a dreamy summer wedding that combined caramel and gold macaroons, dainty blush ruffles, fresh blooms and hints of lavender, all mixed with sumptuous layers of lace and crystal.
THE VENUE
One of the region’s grandest venues, Clevedon Hall, was the setting for our photoshoot. What persuaded us to set up camp at this magnificent Victorian mansion is its versatility and endless options available to create an exclusive luxurious wedding celebration. As it resembles a French chateau in historic features and grandeur, it felt natural to give the day a Parisian twist. Following a £3 million restoration in 2014 the hall, which was previously used as a boarding school, boasts utterly picturesque grounds and an array of event options. Couples can choose to hold their ceremony in the Dame Rosa Burden room, the Great Hall with a stunning wooden staircase or the lightfilled Orangery. On sunny days there is also the option of exchanging vows on the front steps of the mansion and then make use of the amazing grounds for garden games, drinks and photographs in the wildflower meadow. From intimate affairs to lavish receptions of up to 250 guests, the wedding team at Clevedon Hall pride themselves in offering exceptional food and service. Couples who get married here also secure the dedicated wedding concierge’s exclusive assistance with planning. Working with her team, she will be on hand in the build up to and throughout the day ensuring everything runs smoothly, so couples can relax and enjoy the day. The hall also offers a host of sumptuous accommodation facilities: a superb bridal suite and 25 individually styled bedrooms, where guests can retire once the evening party is over. 48
Summer 2015_Shoot.indd 48
THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Capturing the details of the day was acclaimed photographer Lee Hatherall, whose 18 years’ experience in weddings and portrait photography has earned him a long list of prizes. Although based in Weston-super-Mare, Lee happily travels all over the UK thoroughly enjoying his role of documenting ceremonies and receptions in his open and relaxed manner. “I simply approach each event with an open mind and listen to the couple’s wishes and ideas, so that I know how best to ‘tell’ their wedding story,” shares Lee. Having photographed many celebrations at the venue before, Lee knew exactly what shots to take and how to make the most of the location’s unique features. “I like to call my style directed photography, which means that I show couples what I think looks good and then they add their own twist to it,” he explains.

the modern and plush space for a memorable shopping experience. “The boutique has recently celebrated its one year anniversary and we are delighted to have increased our range of gowns from the fabulous British designer Charlotte Balbier as well as adding a new name to our existing range, Australian designer Karen Willis Holmes,” says Lea. With a name in tone with the season, the first dress worn by our bride Lucy was Summer from Alan Hannah’s Floral Symphony collection. It features a strapless silk bodice which is hand painted with mother-of-pearl paint to create beautiful blush and champagne toned flowers, each unique. The skirt is made of silk chiffon with a coordinating blush sash and bow detail at the front, and we accessorised this gorgeous gown with a delicate crystal and pearl Ede bracelet by Blossom with matching drop earrings, plus a floral hair comb. The second dress was the epitome of classic elegance from Annasul Y’s 2015 collection, drawing inspiration from the ‘Paris of the Orient’, Shangai, in the 1930s. This vintage-inspired beaded lace gown with an illusion boat neckline and double lace layered skirt looked breathtaking from every angle. To finish off the sophisticated look, we added a beautiful floral Rowena bracelet with crystal and pearl embellishments, matching Shelly earrings and a chic hairpiece with tulle flowers and delicate crystals. When Lucy stepped into Harriet by Karen 52
Summer 2015_Shoot.indd 52
Willis Holmes, she looked absolutely stunning. The sequined, sheer tulle boat neck bias gown with richly embroidered floral detail on the bodice was styled with a lovely belt by Annasul Y, the Shelly earrings and delicate hair comb at the back for a whimsical wedding day look. The final dress, Maggie, was another of Karen Willis Holmes’ creations – a dreamy ballerina gown from the Wild Hearts collection. It has a corset back and a sheer skirt overlay featuring four layers of circle cut tulle, with the beauty of this skirt being that it can easily sit over an array of gowns from any of the designer’s collections. With such a dramatic dress shape we kept the finishing touches minimal — again, using the pretty pearl and crystal Shelly earrings and fresh lilac blossoms woven into Lucy’s hair.
THE GROOM’S OUTFITS
A leading name in menswear and groomsmen’s suits, bridal and menswear boutique Anne Harding provided all the pieces for our groom’s different looks. Whether you’re going for a traditional 3-piece style or a casual morning suit, Anne Harding can help you and the groomsmen look your absolute best for the big day. With many years’ experience and the proud winner of the 2014 Wedding Industry Awards, the shop can provide outfits and accessories whatever your theme or trend that you want to adopt. Our handsome groom Guy changed
between two lightweight suits, which are perfect for summer weddings. Look number one was a 3-piece fitted light grey lounge suit, and then in a nod to tradition, the second look was a dark grey tails suit. Both were paired with two waistcoats in grey and cream, and each look was completed with on-trend cravats in silver, blush pink and gold, which beautifully matched the bride’s outfits.
THE HAIR
Despite being busy planning her own wedding, Tracy Pallari was happy to lend her professional advice and skills. Tracy’s portfolio, built over 20 years, already includes magazine features, professional photoshoots and bridal hair. “For the first dress, which featured intricate detail on the bodice in a soft blush tone, I wanted to create a very simple but classic hairstyle to compliment the dress. I used large curling tongs, and then brushed the hair through to achieve a very soft, natural waved look. To finish, I added a delicate crystal and pearl hair vine to secure the hair on one side, away from the face,” she explains. The back detail on the Annasul Y lace dress required a pretty hair up look. “I created the hairstyle with subtle finger waves and loose curls, arranging the hair to sit neatly at the nape of the neck into a softly structured shape with a very vintage feel. The flower comb was placed quite low on one side to echo the 1920s use of hair accessories,” says Tracy.

Adding a contemporary feel to the classic French twist, Tracy created a strong, elegant hairstyle for the final two dresses. “To balance the fullness of the skirt, Lucy needed a lot of height and volume, which I achieved with volumising products and quite a lot of back combing to add texture. I then added detail at the back with a couple of carefully placed pin curls.” This romantic look was very versatile: two slightly different looks were created with a few tweaks and by changing between different accessories – a crystal and pearl flower hair comb for the Harriet dress, replaced with tiny fresh lilac buds for the Maggie gown.
THE MAKE-UP
Our bride got camera-ready with the help of Sally Bracey, who is also busy planning a
Weddings WEST
Summer 2015_Shoot.indd 57
wedding this year! After 10 years’ experience in bridal make up as well as working for film and TV shows, Sally knows a thing or two about how to turn every woman into a flawless bride. Talking about her love of bridal make up, Sally explains what inspired her to make this a career: “It started when I was a bridesmaid for a close friend. The morning of her wedding she had a disastrous makeover and left the salon in tears. I decided to take over and started from scratch – she loved it! It felt amazing to know that I can make someone feel confident and special on such an important day in their lives!” Despite the warm weather, Sally’s choice of leading products such as MAC ensured Lucy’s makeup lasted throughout the day and looked fresh and natural for hours. She emphasised
the bride’s eyes with soft contouring liner and shades of pink and pastel eye shadow. For the lips, she added a touch of gloss in sheer pink and peach tones, going for a darker colour for the last two dresses.
THE FLOWERS
Fresh flowers hold an understated power: to add a natural burst of colour to a demure bridal look and the groom’s formal outfit. The splendid shower and hand-tied bouquets and buttonholes provided by Tiger Lily Flowers, together with the ceremony arrangement and table centrepiece, helped bring together the shoot’s theme colours of cream, blush and lilac. Created by talented florist Tina, the arrangements mixed together pale lilac anemone, ranunculus, lilac, veronica and 57

roses in varying shades combined with an eclectic mix of ferns, lavenders, spiraea and pistachio foliages, to create a riot of decliate colour and floral opulence.
THE CAKES
Pretty Amazing Cake’s master baker Anne Gliddon handcrafted a colossal tower of sponge and icing sweeter than the Parisian architectural emblem. The four-tiered cake featured ornate details in blush, gold and ivory – think ruffles, edible gold leaf, lace embroidery and a cameo in a gold frame, trimmed with hand crafted sugar peonies, roses and blossom. Anne also made some individual cupcakes which carried on these motifs. This award-winning cake designer specialising in artistic and elegant cakes comes highly recommend offering couples a bespoke service, and any visit to the Pretty Amazing Cakes website should come with a warning as the images will take your breath away! Our second dessert was a nine-tier macaron tower that combined chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel and coffee flavours to echo our shoot colours, put together by Louise Goldsmith from Maison du Macaron. “As soon as I tried my first macaron, I instantly fell in love with the sweet meringue based treat,” confesses Louise. “After marrying last year and having macarons as our wedding favours and realising how much our guests enjoyed them, we decided to share our love for macarons with the West Country,” she adds.
THE CARS
What better way to make a grand entrance on your big day than in a chauffeur driven car? That’s exactly what we had in store for our happy couple when Triggols Vintage Cars supplied two of their classic motors, and it was hard to decide which of the two vehicles 58
Summer 2015_Shoot.indd 58
featured we liked the best – the 1934 Ivory Sunbeam 25 6 passenger limousine or the 1928 burgundy Austin 12 Tourer. After 40 years of restoring vintage and classic vehicles, this family business has over a dozen motors available for hire – with chauffeur included of course – and its cars have even been seen on the small screen!
THE BUNTING
Now in its second year of trading and with a brand new website, the bunting created by Beez Neez is getting more and more popular for weddings and events. “We design, make and stock a ready-made range of quality cotton hire bunting, in a variety of colours and styles available to rent for most occasions,” outlines Jane Eveleigh. The bunting used for the shoot was a bespoke design of mauve cotton and sateen, delicately trimmed with lace.
THE STATIONERY
With a name like the 'chateau' suite, we just had to showcase this stationery set from the de Winton Paper Co., which features a hand painted watercolour botanic studies in a blue, cream and grey colour scheme inspired by rural scenes. Finished with calligraphy, beautiful fonts and subtly aged paper stock, this suite is ideal for romantic weddings and was the perfect fit for our theme. Based in Bristol, the de Winton Paper Co. is a design studio set up by illustrator and designer Harriet de Winton specialising in elegant and handcrafted stationery for weddings and events.

A family affair If you’ve already started your family before walking down the aisle, the wedding isn’t just about the two of you. So get your children involved in the celebrations to create an extra special day for everyone, says Rebecca Paddick

ids can be a welcome addition to any wedding ceremony. Cherubic faces in mini suits and flowery dresses walking down the aisle are guaranteed crowd pleasers, but making your children feel part of the occasion can also be a great way of bringing the family closer together.
PLAYING THEIR PART When Lisa and Liam Coyne tied the knot back in 2009, they gave their three young sons key roles for the day. “Right from the start I knew I was going to include all my children in our wedding,” said Lisa. Lisa’s son James was 11 at the time, and he was given the extra special role of walking his

mum down the aisle. “James gave me away alongside my dad. Liam isn’t James’ dad, so I asked him to do it because I felt it was a great way to make him feel included. It meant so much to me to have him involved, and I was so proud of him.” James’ younger brothers, three-year-old Patrick and nine-month-old Tomas were pageboys for the day. All three children also helped pick out their outfits in the months before the wedding, to make them feel more involved in the planning. Lisa adds: “Family means the world to Liam and me, and having our boys play major parts in our wedding just made the occasion even more special. It brought us closer as a family — it really was the icing on the cake.”
ALL IN THE PREPARATION As well as the ceremony, you could also include your children in the planning and preparation stages to help get them excited for the big day. Abi and Matt Giles decided to include their three-year-old twins from the very start of their wedding preparations. “Our children sent our invites to the guests, which read: “Freya and Toby would like to invite you to the marriage of their parents,’” explains Abi. “On the day, our daughter was a flower girl and she had her own 'wedding dress' and our son was a ‘best boy'. “We didn’t want to make the day too complex; we both just wanted to get married, eat some lovely food, spend time with some very important people and have a good dance!” Abi says that taking her husband’s surname was another important part. “The twins were very excited about Mummy becoming a 'Gilesy' like them,” she says. “I always intended to be married before I had children but things don't always work out how you think. Our children had an amazing wedding day too and the lovely thing is that they will remember it. The memories of the day are all of ours to share.”
CHANGE OF PLAN When you include children into the wedding mix, you usually have to adjust your plans to suit. When Tracey Tucker found out she was pregnant, she and fiancé Steve decided to wait until after their daughter Isabella was born to get married, as they wanted her to be a bridesmaid at the wedding. The couple 65

married in July last year, when Isabella was a month away from her second birthday. “At the first dress fitting Bella loved twirling around with a huge smile on her face,” explains Tracey. “When the big day arrived, she did put the dress on, but only after a little bribery… the promise of a chocolate bar and crisps after the wedding! When it was time for the ceremony, I was so worried Bella would burst into tears and not want to leave me, but she quietly and happily went off with my sister Kirsty and her son Carter to walk down the aisle before us.” Seeing his daughter walk down the aisle was an emotional experience for the groom, as Tracey remembers: “Steve lost it completely when he saw her, as he didn't have a clue what her dress looked like. I knew she would steal the show but I couldn't have been more proud of her.” Outside of the venue the couple had arranged a bouncy castle, sumo suits and a bubble machine to keep the big and little children entertained. When 7pm came Bella returned to Tracey’s parents house, where a babysitter was waiting. “I could then really let my hair down for the evening do,” says Tracey. “In hindsight I wish we had waited until this year to get married or even next, then Bella would have been that little bit older and more confident in leaving my side. But I still look back and smile every time I look at my little tomboy in a beautiful dress.” So from infants to teens, there are roles for all ages at your wedding. Getting your children involved in planning and on the day itself can help make that special day even better, not just for you, but for your whole family.

Beauty looks for the summer bride Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, a farm retreat or a chic city wedding, make-up artist Verity Gough shows you how to achieve three key summer bridal beauty looks
T
Classic: This look is fresh, radiant and is ideal for more mature brides or those who want to avoid looking too made-up. Allow the your natural radiance to shine through by using clever lightreflecting products. Soft curls, fresh skin and pretty eyes are the key to this look.
FRESH AND CLASSIC
into the hair line and down the neckline to avoid a tide-mark. I used No7 Superlight Foundation, which gives a beautiful medium to light coverage and reflects light to give a more youthful appearance. Dot some Touche Éclat under the eyes to reflect light and minimise dark shadows. Using a large powder brush, dust the face with a finishing powder to set. Starting with the eyebrows, pluck any straggly hairs and fill in any gaps with a soft brown pencil. Adding a little highlighter along the lower brow will enlarge the eyes. Apply a light brown shadow all over the lid, then blend a slightly darker brown into the lid crease and along the outside edge of the top lash line. A slick of Bobbi Brown eyeliner in taupe under the bottom lashes and as close to the roots as possible on the top lashes gives a natural look. Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara is great for really coating even the tiniest lashes. Using a large blusher brush, apply a light pink blusher to the apples of the cheeks, sweeping it up towards the temples. Dot a small amount of highlighter
he dress is picked, flowers ordered and the countdown to the big day is on. For many, the make-up can be one of the last considerations for a busy brideto-be, but if you fancy doing it yourself, with a little planning, research and practise you can create key on-trend looks to add those all important finishing touches. Always select good quality products, invest in a brush set to achieve a professional finish, then have a few trials to make sure you’re confident in applying the make-up you want, with the secret being a good base and well-blended colour. Once you’ve mastered your own look, you could even show the bridesmaids how it’s done! Here’s how to create the summer styles that will be on-trend this summer.
The classical bridal beauty look is understated, fresh, youthful and radiant, something which is timeless and will never date. And with a wealth of radianceboosting beauty products on the market it’s simple to achieve. It works well with any style of dress, and loose soft curls as well as a pretty up-do will complement it. HOW TO CREATE THIS LOOK: Use a good quality primer to create a smooth, matte base. Then, using a sponge wedge or brush, apply foundation, ensuring you blend it 68

along the top of the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and on the Cupid’s bow to add a radiant glow. I used L’Oreal’s Skin Lights in Bare Light, a fantastic product that highlights as well as the more expensive brands. PRODUCTS USED: Clinique Super Primer, No 7 Superlight Foundation in Light Ivory, Yves St Laurent Touche Éclat, Bobbi Brown Cool Eye Palette, Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara in Dark Brown, Soap & Glory Arch De Triumph Shaping Highlighting Brow Crayon in Taupe/ Buff, Bobbi Brown Blusher in Pastel Pink, Revlon PhotoReady Skin Lights in Bare Light, Stila Colour Me Pretty Convertible Colour Lip & Cheek Palette, Elizabeth Arden Crystal Clear Lip Gloss.
MUTED RETRO
Vintage is still a key trend for brides but for some, head-to-toe retro with its bright red lips and nails can be a bit full-on. Instead

this season’s brides-to-be who crave a vintage vibe are opting for a more pared down, muted style that uses soft golds, browns and corals to achieve a subtle vintage look, making it perfect for weddings. My tip is to spend time getting the eyes right. False eyelashes are a great addition to keep classic vintage element and liquid liner creates the iconic cat-eye of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Using a coral lip colour allows the eyes to take centre stage and any vintage accessories to really stand out. HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Clinique Super Primer really helps to smooth out the skin, evens colour pigmentation and allows the make-up to stay put throughout the service, speeches and late into the night. Here a BB cream is used to keep the look fresh and again, small dots of Touche Éclat under the eyes and along the creases of the nostrils will hide dark circles. Set the face with a dusting of light-reflecting loose powder.
Brows are a key feature of the vintage look so some shaping and defining helps to create a stronger arch. This can also be achieved by adding a highlighter pencil along the underside of the brow. I used Soap & Glory’s Arch de Triumph pencil. Pale natural gold eye shadow across the whole lid, followed by a dark smoky brown in the outer edge of the eye and along the crease, gives definition and opens up the eyes. A few dots of brown shadow or eyeliner under the eye, blended well with a small brush will keep the line soft. Tackling the top liner may take some practise, and the tip here is to follow the angle of the edge of the bottom eye line, not the top. You could map out the line in a light kohl liner first before using the liquid liner, and keep a cotton bud dipped in eye make-up remover handy in case you need to correct a wonky line! False lashes give eyes more drama, but a few coats of mascara would look just as good. A peachy pink cheek and a coral lip work well with the browns to 69

achieve the muted vintage look. Use a liner on the lips in a similar colour to the lipstick to avoid the colour bleeding and blot well with a tissue before applying a second coat. I always use a lip brush as that gives a much sharper line and tends to stay put for longer. PRODUCTS USED: Clinique Super Primer, Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream Skin Perfector in Light Medium, Yves St Laurent Touche Éclat, Naked Skin Ultra Definition Loose Finishing Powder, Sleek i-Divine Eye Shadow Palette in Vintage Romance, Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara in Black, Clarins Blush Prodige Illuminating Cheek Colour in Soft Peach, Soap & Glory Arch De Triumph Shaping Highlighting Brow Crayon in Taupe/Buff, Mac Liquid Liner in Black, Eyelure False Lashes.
BOHO CHIC
With folk and the Seventies a key trend this summer, the boho bridal look is set to be popular – think berry lips, fresh skin, braids and blooms! The trick is to keep the make-up light with, soft eyes, and a brighter pop of colour for the lip and cheeks. HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK: Using the Clinique Super Primer as before, smooth over face and neck before blending in the foundation with a sponge. Again the No7 Superlight Foundation and Touche Éclat to reduce dark circles were used. Set the base with finishing powder, as before. Brush out eyebrows and fill any gaps. The boho look is natural so avoid pencilling in too severely. A quick brush through with clear mascara will suffice if you prefer. Use eyelash curlers before applying eyeshadow and again apply a taupe colour all over the lid before adding a slightly darker
Boho Chic: Style your look with natural flowers and braids to add to the boho theme. The lips are key to this look – choose a bright berry colour or even a dark plum. Eyebrows, lashes and eye colour should be natural and pretty, use individual false lashes if you really want to add definition. brown in the crease and along the outside edge of the top lash line. Use the same eyeshadow brush to line under the eyes to keep it soft and pretty. Apply mascara on the top and bottom lashes, brushing out any clumps. Using a large blusher brush, apply a candy pink blusher to the apples of the cheeks sweeping it up towards the temples and as before, use a small amount of highlighter along the top of the cheekbones, Cupid’s bow and down the bridge of the nose. The lips should be lined in a slightly darker colour before being filled in with a bright berry red. Blot and reapply. Dab a small amount of lip gloss onto the centre of the lips to add shine. PRODUCTS USED: Clinique Super Primer, No 7 Superlight foundation in Light Ivory, Yves St Laurent Touche Éclat, Naked Skin Ultra Definition Loose Finishing Powder, Maybelline Colour Tattoo eyeshadow in Eternal Gold and Permanent Taupe, Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara in black, Mac Blusher in Candy Pink, Revlon Photo Ready Skin Lights in Bare Light, Stila Colour Me Pretty Convertible Colour Lip & Cheek Palette, Elizabeth Arden Crystal Clear Lip Gloss.

S
ometimes wedding planning can get a little overwhelming, and when this happens, visiting a spa, enjoying a holistic therapy or pampering yourself with a beauty treatment can be an excellent way of keeping bridezilla — or groomzilla! — tendencies at bay. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite local spots in which you can destress, unwind and get yourself wedding-ready.
ALL UNDER ONE ROOF At the Aztec Hotel and Spa in Bristol you can choose from an extensive treatment list including facials, aromatherapy massages, body wraps and the excellently-named warm coconut soother, using ESPA and Ytsara products. Finish your pampering off with a dip in the pool and a relax in the steam room, before enjoying a manicure and pedicure. The grooms aren’t forgotten either, with a special ‘gentlemen please’ list of treatments. The Aztec offers a special ‘girls night in’ package which is perfect for hen dos, where you can enjoy the spa facilities plus cocktails, dinner, a selection of chick flicks, an ESPA £20 voucher and an overnight stay. menu of treatments that can be delivered to you too. Provided by Lisa Mann of local salon Love Your Skin, you can enjoy massages and facials in the comfort of your own room. And if you book the hotel’s stunning Cathedral Suite, which comes with gorgeous views of the historic church and a freestanding brass bath, you can opt for the exclusive treatment on offer, the Thalgo Indoceane spa ritual, which includes a milk foot bath, exfoliation, massage and body wrap. THERMAE BATH SPA AFFORDABLE LUXURY
If you’re looking to get glowing skin for those all-important photos, then a Hydrafacial at 58 Queen Square could be just what you’re after. A five step process, your face is first cleansed and exfoliated, then a glycolic peel is given to loosen any impurities. The technological bit comes next — a vacuum tip is passed over the face to clean pores and remove blackheads, and then antioxidants and hyaluronic acid are applied to nourish the skin. Editor Helen tested it out and says: “I was initially a little nervous as my skin is very sensitive and I thought it might irritate it, but therapist Victoria was very happy to tailor the treatment for me, leaving out the glycolic peel. My face felt super soft afterwards, and was a lot brighter.”
Bristol Hairdresser of the Year Atelier has expanded its offering and opened up a boutique spa as part of its Clifton salon. The Retreat, led by experienced complementary therapist Charlotte Nock, is an oasis of subterranean calm, with white fabric swathing the ceiling and flickering candles creating a calm, welcoming space. “We offer a range of therapies from holistic massage and advanced reflexology through to aromatherapy and and a selection of our favourite REN facials, ” says Charlotte. “I also offer Gaiatri Ayurvedic massage, which uses the ancient holistic system of Ayurveda to gently bring the person’s mind, body and soul back into balance” -- just what a stressed bride-to-be needs! You can also enjoy a range of beauty treatments and Vita Liberata organic spray tanning.

BATHED IN SPLENDOUR A round up of local spas can’t be complete without a mention of the Thermae Bath Spa, located in the heart of this Georgian city and which utilises the decadently warm and mineral rich waters for which Bath became
famous. Your ticket allows you to lounge in the rooftop pool and gaze across the city’s skyline to the hills beyond, enjoy the tranquilly-lit indoor Minerva pool with its mini whirlpool, and hang out in the steam room with its four individually scented chambers. There’s also the option to have a range of treatments including watsu, where you lie in a private pool and are supported, stretched and guided by a therapist through a series of flowing movements in the water. Hall of plenty Helen Dorritt enjoys a look around the newlyrefurbished Clevedon Hall
J
ust off the seafront at Clevedon, tucked behind an unassuming gate, lies a hidden gem of a place, Clevedon Hall. This Grade II listed Victorian mansion is everything you’d want from a wedding venue: a gorgeously historic building and picturesque grounds, coupled with friendly, enthusiastic staff, and all offered on an exclusive use basis. The hall was built the 1850s for Conrad Finzel (who gives his name to one of the venue’s rooms), a sugar merchant from Germany who originally called it Frankfurt Hall. It was given its current name in 1877 and then had a succession of owners and uses, including being a girls’ school, a call centre and telecoms offices. Under its current owners the McCarthy family, the venue opened its doors to the public for the first time in 2010 for weddings and events (and West Weddings was one of the first through its doors, in a photoshoot for our winter 2010 issue!). Then, as word spread of this amazing venue, it underwent a four year, £3 million refurbishment, meaning that this already beautiful venue became even more stunning. The revamp, which was completed last year, also means that in addition to offering ceremony and reception rooms, there are also 25 luxurious bedrooms to stay in, including the
Weddings WEST

amazing bridal suite with its blue roll top bath and stained glass window. Each bedroom is individually styled and beautifully appointed, with some of the larger rooms having lounges and dressing rooms. The layout of the house and its exclusive use means that you’ll have plenty of space and options to create just the kind of day you want, including four rooms to choose from in which to say your I dos. The light-filled Orangery has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the garden and its picturesque stone fountain, or you can get married in the Grand Hall with its carved staircase. Book lovers will adore saying their vows in the wood panelled Library, or pick the Dame Rosa Burden room which is decorated in cream and white and has magnificent bow windows plus a glittering crystal chandelier. There are also plenty of smaller areas such as the Snug and the Conrad Finzel room which you can set up for your guests to use, and, of course, the stunning gardens and grounds. After the ceremony, we definitely recommend wandering down to the picture-perfect lake for a few photos, with its gorgeous views back up to the house, then snuggling up in the hanging chair under the tree to enjoy your first glass of Champagne as a married couple.

ow summer time is here, with its promise of sundappled afternoons, balmy evenings and blue skies, thoughts turn to wedding ceremonies held outside in beautiful flowerfilled gardens. While it’s not always possible to rely on the good ol’ British weather, if you’re planning your nuptials for this time of year then a garden ceremony can be a delightful way of making the most of the season. Whether it’s a formal landscaped rose arbour or a more lush and untamed wilderness, the South West has plenty of options for al fresco I dos. And while UK marriage laws inhibit a totally open air ceremony, the creative use of archways, gazebos and pagodas mean that you can still say your vows with the breeze in your hair.
THE SECRET GARDEN Created in 1750 and built on love, passion and dedication, Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset is a combination of three beautiful gardens spanning three periods of garden design, with input from Edwyn Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll. There are several licensed spots, including the ultimate in woodland hideaways, the 18th century Temple Arbour which is perched high above the house. Best of all is that the cost includes the whole venue, so you can mix and match the spaces on offer to create the perfect day for you.
WOODLAND WONDER Built as an Arcadian garden cemetery in 1839 and modelled after the cemeteries of Pere-Lachaise in Paris and Kensal Green in London, the beautifullyrestored Arnos Vale in Bristol provides the only opportunity to have a woodland outdoor wedding while still being in the city centre. The wooden-beamed Underwood Centre provides the opportunity to say your vows surrounded by trees, and you can also opt for a twilight ceremony which takes place between 4 and 9pm when the light is at its most magical.

TRANQUILLITY IN THE CITY Right in the heart of Clifton, the Mansion House is one of Bristol’s best kept wedding secrets, as you’d never suspect such an oasis of calm in an urban part of the city. The ‘official’ residence of the Lord Mayor, you can hire out the Victorian house and its large gardens for your ceremony and reception, with the gazebo in the rose garden providing you with an al fresco option. This venue holds a special place in editor Helen’s heart, too, as she had an outside wedding here in 2010.
VICTORIAN EXTRAVAGANCE The Larmer Tree was the first privately owned pleasure garden to be opened up to the public, after being created by General Pitt Rivers in 1880. Its 11 acres of gardens and two halls are offered on an exclusive use basis, and the venue offers what it calls ‘secret garden weddings’, midweek packages for intimate weddings of up to 30 people, with refreshments served outdoors. Oh, and the macaws and freeroaming peacocks will create some amazing photo opportunities!
ECO-FRIENDLY With 28 acres of gardens and parkland to explore, guests will love a wedding at the Matara Centre. Your civil ceremony can take place in the cloistered courtyard with its central pond, and the pagoda, labyrinth and spiral maze make for some fab photos. The Matara Centre can also organise a marriage celebrant, or help you to create your own ceremony which can take place in any part of this beautiful venue. The venue is run on green and ethical principles, so it’s also ideal for those of you who want a low impact ceremony.

King of the castle Helen Dorritt takes a step back in time at the beautiful Thornbury Castle
W
ant a unique venue for your wedding? How does a 500 year old Tudor castle sound? As soon as you enter the arched doorway, you and your guests will leave the 21st century behind and enter a world steeped in history. Four poster beds, open fires, mullioned windows, tapestries and suits of armour... it’s a romance lover’s dream! Thornbury Castle is fully licensed for civil ceremonies, and also has a dedicated wedding co-ordinator to help plan the day. The charismatic Tudor Hall is the largest room for weddings, boasting exposed stone walls and intricate tapestries, together with a huge original fireplace. Two further interlinking reception rooms, the Boyling House and the Great Oven, make this a superbly versatile venue for your wedding celebrations. With a maximum capacity of 66 guests for a sit-down wedding breakfast and a civil wedding licence for 70, the Tudor Hall can be used for both 80

wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast. With the addition of marquees in the 15 acres of grounds, you can have up to 250 guests. As well as historical ambience, the venue is renowned for its cuisine, with award-winning chef Mark Veale, who trained with Gordon Ramsay, conjuring up mouth-watering dishes using the best quality — mostly locally sourced – ingredients. There are also 26 unique bedchambers for you and your guests to become immersed in the spirit of the place. The suites are ideal for preparing for (and recovering from!) the big day. Our favourite is the Tower Suite – you may have to climb 77 circular stone steps, but the views across the River Severn into Wales once you get there are definitely worth it, as is the four-poster bed. For 2015, the venue is offering a special £4,000 midweek package for selected dates, and you can also enjoy a Champagne afternoon tea for two people if you quote “West Weddings 2015” when you book your wedding.

Afternoon delight Helen Dorritt enjoys a sumptuous tea for two at the Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath
A
s I walked under a cloudless blue sky along Bath’s famous Royal Crescent, the thought went through my mind that this has to be one of the best streets in the world. Where else do you get perfectly proportioned Georgian houses in a beautiful semi circle, looking out towards the landscaped grass of a park and onto the countryside beyond? So it stands to reason that a hotel that’s positioned right in the middle of said crescent is going to be a pretty special place. My mum and I had been invited by the Royal Crescent Hotel to try out its new afternoon tea, and by happy coincidence we picked a beautifully sunny spring day, which meant that we could take our tea in the garden. This is a lot larger than you would think from the facade, and we subsequently learned from the manager that the hotel had bought several gardens from its neighbours over the years. There was a choice of three different afternoon tea selections: the Duke of York, the Royal Crescent or the Elizabeth Montagu. We opted for the last, and enjoyed a huge range of treats including smoked salmon, chive and lemon cream cheese sandwiches, hot crispy kedgeree with spiced mango yoghurt, and pistachio cake with marzipan and pistachio buttercream, alongside the traditional scones, clotted cream and jam. And no Bath afternoon tea would be complete without a Bath bun, that delicious local delicacy of a warm, sweet roll baked with a cube of sugar inside. All of the food is made at the hotel, and I can honestly
Weddings WEST
Summer 2015_Venues.indd 83
say that I’ve never had a better scone (sorry Mum!). There were also 12 different teas to choose from, and to make the experience even more special, we opted for a glass of Taittinger Brut Champagne. The hotel describes its afternoon tea as “epitomising its ethos of combining old world heritage with new world luxury”, and we certainly agreed with that! The staff of the hotel also deserve a mention, as their welcome and attention to detail was fantastic. I had said on booking that it was my mum’s birthday, and so on arrival all the staff wished her many happy returns, and the cake plate arrived iced with a chocolate happy birthday message. If you’re looking have some girly time with your bridesmaids after a day of shopping for their dresses, want to treat the mother of the bride or groom, or fancy a quintessentially English hen do, then I can’t think of a better South West location to do it in. After tea we were able to wander around the garden, and discovered that exciting plans are afoot to turn a section of it into an exclusive ‘wedding garden’, complete with licensed pergola. This will be the perfect location for a small, intimate wedding, and enquiries are now being taken for 2016 weddings. The hotel also has a licence for three of its rooms, the Library, the Drawing Room and the Sir Percy Blakeney Suite, and also makes a luxurious reception venue. After all, what better backdrop to your wedding photos can there be than one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the world?

“I love this photo as it’s a visual reminder of what a large part of our wedding was about, being so happy to have all the people we love in one room. This is one of the most amazing privileges you have on your wedding day: every time you turn around, you see someone else that you want to go and hug. I didn’t even know this photo was happening — my husband’s cousin was quietly taking pictures from the floor above, which resulted in some gorgeous shots of spontaneous moments.” Weddings WEST
