Your wedding dilemmas solved

Your time to shine

WEST WEDDINGS WINTER 2015 Winter weddings are becoming more and more popular and it’s not hard to see why. The season provides great opportunities for some beautiful touches for a wedding, from creating a romantic atmosphere with flickering candles to warming up guests with welcome drinks of mulled wine. It’s also the perfect time of year to add some sparkle to a celebration, which is why I loved our glamorous 1930s-inspired photoshoot at Bristol Grammar School that was full of sequins and shine! We worked with some amazing local businesses to create 12 pages of stunning photographs to inspire you, starting on page 49. Whatever time of year you’re planning your wedding for, this issue is full of great ideas to make your day memorable. Shopping for The One? Turn to our gown galleries on page 29 for some seriously stylish dresses from designers including La Sposa, Justin Alexander and, fitting in rather appropriately with our shoot, Eliza Jane Howell’s vintage-style frocks. Looking for some beauty haul to get you w-day ready? We’ve got the best new products on page 68. Want inspiration from real life weddings? There are five gorgeous celebrations to pore over starting on page 18. And, once you’ve got everything sorted, head over to page 64 where we’ve come up with some unusual ways to record and remember all the magic of the day that you’ve planned! Happy reading!

ince starting LightHaus Events a year ago, Siobhan Dunsford’s company has gone from strength to strength. The company originally started out with a collection of giant light-up letters, recognising that there was a gap in the market in the South West for props such as this. LightHaus’ LOVE and MR&MRS swiftly became popular additions to venue décor in the region, with the company being nominated for an award in the ‘Special Touches’ category of The Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards. Siobhan’s love of unique props has grown and she’s been adding statement pieces to LightHaus’ collection. The company is now collaborating with another local business, The Pink Peony Florist, to create a new addition to the items available to hire, a beautiful set of floral LOVE letters. These pretty initials are five feet high and look absolutely stunning in a wedding venue. LightHaus is also working with Bristol Vintage and has created a fun, interactive photo wall, which can be seen in our shoot at Bristol Grammar School over on page 49. Other new props include light-up table numbers, Aunt Sally boards, two feet light up letters and shapes and a vintage drinks station. If more than one of these catches your eye, then LightHaus is always happy to offer package discounts. LIGHTHAUS EVENTS T: 01275 858151 W: WWW.LIGHTHAUSEVENTS.CO.UK

t may be cold outside, but Love Actually is declaring this season its most romantic! David and Emma from the wedding fair company will be hosting events across the South West region throughout the winter months to help you plan your special day. The season starts with the Christmas special fair at Bristol Zoo on 6th December, complete with mulled wine, minced pies and Santa to help you get both into the planning mood and Christmas spirit! In the New Year, David and Emma will be hosting events in Bristol and Somerset, starting off on 3rd January at the re-named and re-branded Grand Hotel, a landmark hotel in the Bristol city centre. Love Actually will then be at the Castle Hotel in Taunton (10th January), Farrington Park (17th January), the Dunster Tithe Barn (24th January) and Charlton House (January 31st). Love Actually will then focus on the romantic month of February, first at Cheltenham Park on the 7th and then, for the very first time, an exclusive Valentine’s Day special fair event at Sudeley Castle – it couldn’t be a better match for the most romantic day of the year! The Four Pillars Group Hotel fairs then follow at The Cotswold Water Park Hotel (21st February) and, of course, Tortworth Court (28th February), a brand of hotels that David and Emma have been associated with since 2008. Warming up in March (literally!), Love Actually will then host The Bishop’s Palace fair in Wells (13th March) and M Shed in Bristol (20th March). Admission is always free with Love Actually so it’s a great opportunity to visit a number of stunning wedding venues across our region and start planning your special day. Emma and David commented: “It’s a fantastic season for us. Choosing a photographer, setting a budget for flowers, visiting wedding fairs?

Fabulous fairs

Question: I’m struggling to choose a wedding photographer for our big day. What should I be looking for when I’m booking our photographer and what questions should I ask?

Question: I’m on a tight budget but really want to use flowers to make an impact at our reception venue. What’s your advice for achieving the most with what I can afford?

Question: What advantages are there in going to wedding fairs? I’m not sure at the moment that it’s worth planning any into my diary, especially since I often work evenings and weekends.

Davinder Singh Chana from Shutter and Flash says:

Tina Bignall from Tiger Lily Flowers says:

Darren from WOW Wedding Shows says:

Answer: The best way to know which photographer is right for you is to see their work and compare it with the work of other photographers you’ve found. Consider things such as have they caught all the details of the wedding? Are the images framed well? Look at their photos and mark out what you like and dislike about them. It’s also important to take a good look at their pricing structure and make sure you understand what is being offered. Too often I’ve heard stories of brides upset over the cost of additional images or additional hours. After the event this isn’t something that can be fixed, so it’s vital that you know what you’re paying for in advance of the big day. Last but not least, meet your potential wedding photographer to see their work and albums in person, and to check that you get on well with them – after all, they’re going to be an important part of the day!

Answer: With the growth in websites such as Pinterest, we’ve seen more brides coming to us with a more definite style preference, which in itself is great. You need to be careful with setting your heart on something that you’ve seen as things are not always achievable in real life, but if you choose a florist with a proven track record then they will make most ideas work to your budget. For example, if you really want a particular table centrepiece but your budget won’t stretch, have one on the top table and scaled down versions on guests’ tables, still setting the style theme. Ask your florist for a breakdown of all the things that you would like, then choose one or two areas that will give you the wow factor. Concentrate on where you’re going to spend your time, and consider things such as if it’s really necessary to decorate the outside archway if your ceremony is inside. A good florist who knows the venue will be able to create almost any style within a set budget. So listen and trust in our expertise... it’s what we do!

Answer: My answer to that would be a most resounding yes! Wedding fairs give you the opportunity to meet a large number of quality local wedding suppliers all in the one place, saving you time and money travelling to multiple locations. They also give you the chance to view a selection of venues when they’re set up for a wedding. Weddings are a very personal affair, so working with the right suppliers for you is vital to ensuring your wedding is the most amazing day it can be. Meeting suppliers face to face helps you to establish a rapport with them, as they are going to be a part of your special day, while helping them to understand you and your needs better. Here at WOW Wedding Shows we organise a number of wedding shows in the region that are definitely worth planning into your diary for 2016, including Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and West Gloucestershire.

fter meeting at an ‘all you can drink’ night at a club, it’s not surprising that when Sam and Gary went on their first date, the bride ended up repeating a lot of the things she’d already said! “Due to the fact that Sam had taken full advantage of the offer, she asked me a lot of questions that she had previously asked at the club, including what my job was. I initially thought that she was either quite simple or had a bizarre sense of humour!” says Gary. Luckily he soon realised that neither was the case, and Sam was, in fact, the girl for him. After doing a lot of ring research into the 4Cs of diamonds, he presented Sam with a round cut brilliant diamond and platinum ring on a surprise picnic in the countryside. The date for the wedding was 20th December and the couple said their vows in St James the Great church in Winscombe, the village where Sam grew up. “We were blessed with a remarkably sunny day for December, and the main thing was that it didn’t rain!” says Gary. The wedding then moved to Coombe Lodge in Blagdon for the reception. “We’ve been to a lot of weddings in the local area and the minute we stepped into Coombe Lodge for a friend’s reception, we knew that we wanted our reception to be there too,” says Sam. “It’s simply stunning, inside and outside, and also fitted a winter wedding there perfectly.” The groom took equal responsibility with the bride for organising the day. “I know that I’m very lucky to have a husband who was also extremely into planning the wedding,” says Sam. “I couldn’t have done it without him. am an accountant after all!” Sounds like a great division of labour to us! When it came to her dress, Sam didn’t just find The One – she had two! These reflected her desire for a classic English wedding with more of a party in the evening. The first was a beautiful lace gown with a boat neck, sweeping train and bow detail on the waist, which she wore for the ceremony and wedding breakfast. For the evening festivities, in Kate Middleton style, Sam swapped into a cowl necked, open back dress with a sleek silhouette and delicate beaded detail. “Both were from Rookery Bridal – the customer service is first class. I made a very last-minute decision to get the second dress and they sorted this out for me just a few weeks before the wedding. The shop is beautiful and the choice of dresses is incredible.” Gary was equally dapper in a bespoke three-piece suit from Territo Tailoring in Bristol. Eden Flowers in Winscombe were in charge of the flowers, which were so beautiful that they made the bride well up! “We knew the look we wanted as well as the colours, but didn’t know much about flowers, so left this in Gail’s capable hands. The flowers were absolutely beautiful; we were both so pleased with them. I remember nearly crying on the morning of the wedding when Gail brought the bouquets and button holes into my parent’s house. It started to feel so real at that point,” explains Sam. Since Eleanor from Interlace Photography has known Sam since they were little, there was no doubt who would be recording the day. “Our wedding photos speak for themselves – they’re absolutely stunning, and a great combination of traditional wedding photos and more modern arty photos, too,” enthuses Sam. “We couldn’t believe how many photos Eleanor took and loved how she got loads of natural photos of our guests,

too. She also surprised us on Christmas Day by giving our wedding photo CDs to my parents to open in the evening.” In fact, Sam and Gary’s wedding photos were so lovely, they were voted as the Interlace Photography Couple of the Year. The day went without a hitch, and both Sam and Gary would love to relive it. “We both got a little bit drunk towards the end,” laughs Gary, “but we were having a great time with family and friends, and we did meet at an ‘all you can drink’ night, so I suppose that was to be expected!”

on popped the question to Claire on the Greek island of Paros, during sunset on his favourite beach. “Though he claimed the island choice was so that I couldn’t run away, it was a stunning setting,” says Claire. “We had the place to ourselves, which made it incredibly personal, and exactly what I would consider romantic.” After this beach-based proposal abroad, the wedding itself was a very traditional English affair, as the couple said their vows in Brent Knoll church in Somerset. “Brent Knoll is where Jon grew up, and his mother reminisces of Jon attending his Christmas services at the church as a child. Having travelled so much when I was growing up, I don’t have such strong ties to a single place. Finding the village quaint and villagers to be so very welcoming and warm, I found it hard to think of a more hospitable, friendly place,” enthuses Claire. The reception also took place in the village, where a friend of the family offered up her garden for the event. “The owner was unbelievably generous in allowing us to erect a yurt and hold a 150-strong party in her garden, not to mention a generator and the luxury toilet trailer beside her vegetable garden booming out patriotic British classics through integrated speakers!” In an opportune turn of fate, a relative of the owner was previously a wedding planner and her expertise proved invaluable on the day. “The church ceremony was about us and the reception was about our guests,” explains Jon. “We spent a lot of time planning out the reception, thinking about whether it was the kind of event that our guests would enjoy.”

Weddings WEST

Winter 2015_Real Weddings.indd 21

Despite a lot of planning, the wedding was nearly derailed at the last minute – by the British weather and then some sheep! Jon explains: “By the Friday afternoon, everything was coming together nicely – the yurt was up and dressed, and all that was left was the arrival of the catering team. Unfortunately, we hadn’t considered the distance the catering tent was from the main yurt, and the problems this would cause for moving food across the lawn if it was raining. While panic set in that we were going to have to move the catering tent – at least three hours’ work, with one hour until the church rehearsal – a local from the village popped by to inform me that some sheep were on the loose and so he’d herded them into the field we were using for our car park. The farmer then arrived and asked for a couple of us to help him take the sheep back to his farm. Needless to say, with just an hour before the church rehearsal, I didn’t expect to be running around a field, herding sheep!” One tip that Claire would pass onto other couples is the value of a wedding planner. “Throughout the day our planner ensured everything ran smoothly, from the setting up and decamping of the suppliers, including extracting a gazebo from thin air the day of the wedding, to keeping the bride and groom in the right places at the right time, well-medicated against the bride’s unplanned cold, and ensuring that the event ran in a timely manner.” The couple also used a venue dresser to give the wedding the look that they’d dreamed of, and were equally pleased with this decision, as it really helped them to achieve the vision that they both wanted for their special day. “We used

Verdigris venue dressing, who really helped us to fine tune our ideas and colour palettes,” explains Claire. “They also liaised with all of our suppliers and designed everything in fine detail, from our lighting used in the marquee to our table coverings. It took around 48 hours for all the décor to be installed, tables dressed, flowers put in vases and the lighting set up. We would never have been able to do it all ourselves, and if we had tried to, then I suspect we would never have finished and would have been completely exhausted for our special day!”

heir relationship started at a wedding in Cambridge, where well-meaning friends thought they would hit it off and were proved right when the evening ended with a romantic walk along the River Cam. The proposal took them back to the same bench by the river where they’d had their first proper conversation, with Andrew asking Clementine to marry him under a moonlit sky. “I was a bridesmaid at the wedding and we were placed next to each other at the breakfast, but it was so embarrassingly obvious we had been set up that we hardly talked!” elaborates Clementine. “A few hours and whiskies later, and a beautiful walk down to a bench by the river, and we were talking a lot more. When it came to the proposal, I had my suspicions Andrew was going to propose during a holiday to Italy, but sadly the holiday never happened as he fell critically ill days before we were due to leave. He spent months in hospital, and one day told me that he had planned to propose in Lucca at the top of the Guinigi Tower. A few months after Andrew was discharged from hospital we returned to the spot where we first talked and got to know each other, and he proposed there. It was incredible, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!” When it came to planning the wedding, Clementine and Andrew were equally involved. “One of the things I wanted was to make Andrew proud. He continuously makes me proud and I didn’t want to let him down on our wedding day,” explains Clementine. Andrew wanted a unique wedding – “for every element to be considered and personal to us, so this wasn’t just another ‘stock’ wedding.” The ceremony was also very important to both of them, as they wanted a special, intimate atmosphere with close family and friends to celebrate the moment they became husband and wife. They achieved this with two equally atmospheric venues – holding the ceremony at St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells and the reception at the Bishop’s Palace, also in Wells. “St Cuthbert’s is the largest parish church building in Somerset so I got to maximise the amazing moment of walking down the aisle!” laughs Clementine.

Weddings WEST

Winter 2015_Real Weddings.indd 23

“And when we visited the Bishop’s Palace, it all fell into place. This is where I fed the ducks as a little girl and my father married here in 2011, so it’s an immensely special place for both Andrew and me.” As Clementine is a professional cellist and Andrew a professional singer, music was always going to play an important part in their December wedding. “We wanted there to be fantastic music from the moment the first guests arrived to the end of the night,” says Clementine. “We are hugely lucky to have talented, musical friends who made our wedding day unforgettable.” Andrew agrees. “I wanted to ‘marry’ our different musical backgrounds – the choral and string worlds – which we did in a sumptuous anthem during our ceremony, O Jesu Christ Meins Lebens Licht by Bach.” During the planning, Clementine used to joke to Andrew that she’d picked out a fluorescent green knee-length dress, but on the day she wore a stunning strapless gown with a soft tulle skirt, which came from Swoon Bridalwear. “The shop specialises in secondhand dresses and I liked the idea of giving a pre-loved dress another chance to shine, but as it turned out, I unknowingly picked one of the very few dresses in the shop that was brand new. The shop was extremely helpful and let me return to try on the dress multiple times!” The necklace she wore was her ‘something borrowed’, as it was originally Andrew’s great-grandmother’s and was lent to her by Andrew’s parents. “They then gave it to me for Christmas, so my something borrowed became my 'something mine', which sums up how wonderfully kind they are.” The couple chose Belinda McCarthy as their photographer, who they describe as “the fairy godmother" of photographers! “I emailed around 30 photographers when we started the search and she was the one that stood out by miles,” notes Clementine. “Her photography is stunning, her professional yet down-to-earth manner was so appreciated, and her good humour and understanding of our needs was totally innate.” The couple were also very pleased with the rest of their suppliers. “The Bishop’s Palace catering

team could not have been more helpful. We were quite specific about what we wanted and nothing was too much trouble. The head chef even found his mother’s recipe for gingerbread biscuits at our request!” says Clementine. “Grace at Bramble and Wild florist was equally helpful. Being a wedding supplier myself, I knew exactly what I wanted and Grace never failed to smile and always said ‘yes’. A very beautiful little independent florist that was a gem of a find!” And with Andrew and his mother baking a sumptuous four-tier cake, the couple’s wedding day unfolded exactly as planned. Clementine describes the day as “a whirlwind of happiness, joy, love and smiles. I couldn’t have wished for more and I have never felt so surrounded by love. Looking back on it still brings tears of joy to my eyes.” Andrew agrees. “It was truly magical and unforgettable – the most wonderful day of my life.”

ictoria and James met during their PGCE year in Bristol, where they were both training to be maths teachers, meaning it was as easy as '123' when it came to getting together. “We share many interests that always provided us with something to talk about,” explains Victoria. “Although, as we’re both maths teachers, our departments think that all we do every evening is solve mathematics problems – which is sometimes the case, but we don’t tell them that!” Despite being the centre of attention in the classroom, neither Victoria nor James like to have too much focus on them the rest of the time, so James’ low-key proposal at home in their flat was perfect for Victoria. “James works at a private school so he has shorter terms than me. While I was at work, he spent the whole day covering the flat with vases of roses and scattering them around the living room. He cooked us a lasagne which is his staple dish as his grandparents are Italian and we go to Italy most summers. After dinner, he got down on one knee and popped the question.” The same school, Wycliffe College, was the setting for the couple’s August ceremony. “It was important to me that we had a church wedding, as I think that the atmosphere in a church can’t be matched in a period house,” says Victoria. “We’re lucky as we live on campus in one of the boarding houses and our flat looks out on to the college’s chapel. It also meant that Claire, who is the houemaster of our boarding

house's wife, could conduct the ceremony.” This was also the highlight of the wedding for Victoria. “I feel it’s the most important part of the day as it’s the time when you are committing to each other which is really what marriage is all about. The best part was when we said our wedding vows to one another.” Afterwards the party moved to Thornbury Golf Centre, and while the weather wasn’t what a wedding in August should be, Victoria and James didn’t let it dampen their spirits. They travelled to the venue in a gorgeous vintage car from Satin and Lace Weddings’ collection. “The car was beautiful with a very chatty and approachable driver – it was just a shame that we couldn’t have the top down due to the weather.” The inclement weather that summer also made sourcing the flowers that the couple had planned a bit tricky, but Blooming Brides in Thornbury still managed to pull it off. “We wanted 100 sprigs of lavender, and while the summer had brought in a very low yield, Pat from Blooming Brides got them for us.” Victoria and James’ wedding party was memorable, with eight bridesmaids, three best men and one page boy! Guests were left a little bemused by the groom and best men’s speeches, however. “Due to a bet they had made the previous evening, they had all put various odd words into a hat and had to pick out three each and incorporate them into their speeches,” explains Victoria. “Some of the words included dungarees, flux capacitor, sexual and pork – a very odd combination!”

The couple both agree that they wouldn’t change a thing. “I loved it from beginning to end, and was glad that we had such a lovely day with all of our family and friends. The day goes by so fast with so many memories being created,” says Victoria. “The highlight of my day was when I got to call Victoria my wife for the first time,” enthuses James. “I had been waiting ages to be able to do it, and it still feels great today!”

A beautifully nostalgic church wedding sealed the commitment of Louise and Mike Hill

he love story between Louise and Mike started with a pinch of boldness and an ounce of romance. The couple met in Portsmouth while on a Christian youth camp back in 2008. After being nagged by a friend to find out who this mysterious ‘cute’ guy was, Louise cheekily threw a pebble at Mike to get his attention. It worked – the pair got talking and the rest is history! Mike’s proposal to Louise was the perfect example of ‘when the moment is right’. Having completely planned out the whole process, on the beach while on holiday in Ilfracombe, the weather had made it slightly difficult and Mike decided that a proposal in the wind and rain probably wouldn’t have been as romantic as he would have liked. Instead, Louise was surprised with the question while they were comfortably snuggled up watching MasterChef. “I felt that this was actually a better moment to ask as we were happy and just being ourselves,” she says. Mike agrees. “In the end the way I proposed was exactly right and felt like perfect timing.” Louise and Mike decided to have a September wedding at the St Barnabas Church in Warmley. This church has particular meaning for Louise, who has visited it every Christmas since she was very young and was able to see the spire from her parents’ house when she was growing up. For the reception venue, they instantly fell for the Somerdale Pavilion (the former Fry Club) in Keynsham, due to the warm staff who went above and beyond to meet their needs, combined with the huge variety of catering options, practical layout and beautiful views. With Mike’s suit being chosen within his own home from Original Mobile Menswear's extremely efficient service, Louise’s gorgeous dress (matched with classic jewellery from her mum) came from Radstock bridal shop Solitaire Brides. “Lucy and her team are so friendly and make you feel right at home, they know exactly what will suit you and can find you something even if you are really fussy like me!” Bringing her

wonderful creativity, Lindsey of Perfect Petals supplied the day with a beautiful arrangement of flowers. “Lindsey is so lovely and runs her business from home. She will do anything you like, and you can chose from pictures or have something unique, and she also has a massive book of different flowers for you to choose from. She even brought a biscuit for my dog!” says Louise. The Old Bake House was enlisted to help design and make the cake, even incorporating a gluten-free layer, and making sure no special moment or memories were lost, talented photographer John Holbrook worked with Louise and Mike to ensure he captured exactly what they wanted. Friends and family also helped, and with six bridesmaids, two flower girls, a best man and five groomsmen, they definitely weren’t short of helping hands. The vast mixture of weather on the day could have quite easily caused a few frowns, but it was far from off-putting for the couple. “In fact, it added to the day!” explains Louise. “When we were doing our photos we had a few showers but everyone just rallied round with their umbrellas and laughed it off.” It would seem that the guests’ spirits were anything but dampened, either. “Reports back the next day told us that after we left everyone got rather tipsy, the DJ put on a 90s rock set that everyone rowdily moshed to, including parents, relatives and friends, and by midnight they were all rather worse for wear!” Reflecting back on the day, Louise enjoyed spending time together away from the whirlwind of the rest of the day. “The best part was when we left the church. We had a nice ride in our posh car to Keynsham Park, with a glass of Champagne, which is where we had our photos taken. I really liked this part of the day because we got to spend some quality time together within the rush of everything, just chatting and having a laugh.” Mike admits his favourite part of the day was their first dance. “It was a song that meant so much to us and when the chorus came in,

balloons fell from the ceiling and our parents and wedding party got up and danced too. Seeing all the people that meant the most to us dancing alongside us on our special day was amazing.” And although having their favourite individual moments, their day as a whole was quite clearly a beautiful success too. “Our day was better than we could have wished for. We got to marry the person of our dreams, surrounded by the people we love. It was everything we wanted and more.”

GROOMS

Serious style! Suzie Kidger looks at the grooms who have gone above and beyond to match their bride’s glorious gown

W

hether you’re planning a fairytale wedding or creating a whole new theme of your own, the outfit for your big day can often be the most agonising decision you’ll have to make. We’re all well aware how stressful yet exciting wedding dress shopping can be, but what about the groom? The bride may normally be the fashion centre of attention, but with some serious style available for men, let’s recognise the grooms that took their outfit to a whole new level. The groom’s outfit is frequently overlooked, but it’s easy to inject a touch of flair into your w-day look. it’s often the smallest of details that will complete a basic suit and get heads turning in your direction, and whether you add a modern edge to a traditional or vintage suit, or use accessories to make a statement, you have plenty of scope to let your personality shine through. Richard Huntley wanted to choose a colour that contrasted strongly against his bride’s beautifully crisp white gown. “My wife’s dress had nothing on my suit! I shopped around, and was wary of buying online, but eventually I bit the bullet and bought my entire outfit on Asos,” he says. “I wanted my suit to be the main attraction, and I think the rich burgundy type colour really stood out.” For Richard, the cut was what drew him to his choice of outfit, and the options to accessorise were endless. He chose not to add a cravat or bow tie, instead opting to let his skinny fit outfit along with double breasted waistcoat do the talking. Richard has a piece of advice if you’re suit shopping. “I would definitely recommend is going into a few shops so you know roughly what your measurements are and to give you some indication on length and cut. I think that was what I was most worried about when ordering online, but luckily I had tried on a few in store to know.” When Jason Paine was organising his outfit, he knew he didn’t want something boring. “My wife had a beautifully simple, slim-fitting dress with lots of lace, but I wanted something 42

Winter 2015_Grooms.indd 42

a bit more extravagant. Our whole wedding had a light cream colour theme, so I thought a splash of colour would work perfectly. I knew that I didn’t want a brightly-coloured suit as such, but just wanted to just add a trim or added piece of colour.” A colourful bow tie or even braces can add that extra charm to a groom’s outfit in seconds, which is exactly what Jason took into his stride when it came to shopping for the perfect burst of colour. “I wanted to go outside of the typical conventions of a tailored black or grey suit, and instead I went for a navy check jacket and trousers, matched with an electric orange tie and white shirt. Of course, I also

had to get shoes with some orange on too. My wife didn’t think the whole outfit would work, but it was constantly a topic of conversation – in a good way!” he adds. Both Richard and Jason were well aware of traditional wedding conventions for grooms, yet both managed to put together an outfit that allowed their personality to shine through while still working with their brides’ stunning dress choices. “I know everyone is usually looking at the bride, but I think it is only fair that I had style in my outfit too, and at least I

can wear mine again!” says Richard. While his burgundy suit definitely caught everyone’s eye, you don’t have to veer too far from tradition to add your own twist to your outfit – it can be as simple as a pin badge on your collar or a funky hat to add that extra sprinkle of charisma.

Your time to shine

’Tis the season to be sparkly, so we headed over to Bristol Grammar School to create a truly glamorous winter wedding Photography: Emma Eirene Styling: Kirsten Butler Words: Helen Dorritt

ake a venue with grandeur, a handful of local wedding businesses and two smiling models. Add a talented photographer and top with a sprinkling of sequins, and what have you got? A shoot that oozes glamour and style for our winter issue. We took inspiration from the 1930s to create a Hollywood look for our bride and groom Rachel and Tamer in the grand setting of Bristol Grammar School.

THE VENUE

If a magnificent wedding reception venue is what you’re after, then Bristol Grammar School should definitely be on your list. An oak panelled hall with organ loft and grand piano, buildings dating back to the 1800s and before, and a host of interesting architectural details make this one stylish school. The Great Hall is the setting for wedding receptions; a room that’s straight out of the pages of Harry Potter. It’s spacious enough to hold up to 380 seated guests, with light flooding in through the stunning stained glass windows at either end. It’s a room that takes styling well, and was the perfect complement to our props of oversized light up letters and a long table covered with a sequinned tablecloth. Our photographer Emma also enjoyed finding hidden spots around the school for Rachel and Tamer to pose in, such as the arched wooden door up from a flight of stone steps, tucked around the side of the main entrance.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

When we asked Emma Eirene what she loves about photographing weddings, her reply was “everything!” Sounds like our kind of photographer! Her favourite part, however, is capturing scenes at weddings that wouldn’t otherwise be seen. “I love close-up shots, and recording intimate moments from the day,” 50

Winter 2015_Shoot.indd 50

she explains. This natural, reportage style of photography shines through in her images from our shoot, where she expertly captured the details on the dresses and accessories as well as the sweeping grandeur of this wonderfully expansive venue. Emma also offers lifestyle photography from her studio in Frampton Cotterell, from beautiful bumps and newborns to children’s parties and adult portraits. Her motto is “photos to cherish forever”, and with Emma at the lens of your wedding photography, this will certainly be the case.

THE DRESSES AND ACCESSORIES

We had dresses from The White Collection and accessories from Bridezillas to make Rachel look and feel like a Hollywood starlet, and we think you’ll agree that we succeeded! The White Collection is based in the pretty seaside town of Clevedon, and prides itself on offering a range of stunning dresses from top designers including Annasul Y, Charlotte Balbier and Ivory and Co. Bridezillas is a treasure trove of beautiful bridal bits and bobs, including jewellery, veils, shoes and hairpieces, and the friendly staff are experts in helping you to find the perfect accessories for your dress. Rachel’s first dress was from Annasul Y (AY2676B) and featured a mesh overlay of sequinned lace, a high front and a v neck back with a playful ruffle. Amanda Davis-Harrison from Bridezillas teamed this with the ‘Cora’ headpiece by Abigail Grace, which is part of the range’s new Downton Abbey-inspired collection. Rachel also modelled ‘Adora’ earrings by Crystal Valley and a ‘Liberty’ bracelet by Athena Couture. For the second look, Rachel wore ‘Everly’ by Charlotte Balbier, a satin dress with a lace,

pearl and sequin bodice. The sheer back and flowing train were our favourite features, enhanced by a row of crystal buttons. This was paired with the Abigail Grace ‘Lady Sybil’ headpiece, Ivory and Co’s ‘Bacall’ earrings and a diamante bracelet by Blossom. Rachel’s favourite dress of the day was number three, ‘Alexandra’ by Karen Willis Holmes. This heavily-sequinned gown just oozed Hollywood glamour, and the translucent back with asymmetric floral embroidery went perfectly with the elegant simplicity of Abigail Grace’s crystal and satin ribbon ‘Downton’ headpiece. Amanda also added a ‘Baltimore’ bracelet by Ivory and Co and crystal earrings by Blossom. For the final look, Rachel wore another gorgeous Annasul Y dress (AY2419B), a strapless fishtail with frothy net skirts to give shape, and finished off with sequin and bead detailing. With it she wore an ‘Anastasia’ headpiece plus ‘Fifth Avenue’ necklace and earrings, all by Ivory and Co. We were also lucky enough to have two pairs of Freya Rose shoes from this fab UK couture designer. ‘Astoria’ are a beautiful pair of ivory silk satin peep toes with hand embroidered heel detail. And what could be more appropriate than a pair of slingbacks called ‘Hollywood’? Opulently embellished with crystals and pearls, these shoes were a real showstopper!

THE SUITS

When it comes to Hollywood style, it just has to be a black dinner jacket, and Anne Harding in Bristol came up trumps with a suit that 54

Winter 2015_Shoot.indd 54

fitted groom Tamer perfectly. This bridal and menswear shop in Stoke Bishop has a fabulous range of suits for men, both for hire and for sale. To go with the black tux and crisp white shirt, the head of the menswear department at Anne Harding, Lee Frost, accessorised them with a black waistcoat, cummerbund and, of course, a bow tie. James Bond, eat your heart out.

THE MAKE-UP

A recent bride herself, Sally Bracey perfectly interpreted our glam theme for our bride’s make-up. With over ten years’ experience of bridal make-up as well as film and television work on her CV, she loves to make her customers feel confident and special. Sally started off by making made Rachel’s already beautiful skin even more flawless, which also helped to emphasise the strong eyes and lips. She then created sculpted eyes with mascara, flicked eyeliner, strong brows and a set of wow-’em false eyelashes. The finishing touch was a bright red lip for a look that was classic Hollywood.

THE HAIR

Tracy Pallari created two looks for Rachel, based on classic 1930s Marcel waves. For the first two dresses, she left Rachel’s hair down in soft curls. For dresses three and four, the curls were pinned up into an asymmetric chignon to create a faux soft bob, which emphasised the detailing on the back of the Karen Willis Holmes dress as well as beautifully setting off the range of Bridezillas’ headpieces. Tracy has over 25 years’ experience with hair and also make-up, and creating the perfect look

for you on your wedding day is something that makes her very happy! She’s also a recent bride, who got married by the sea in Devon in April this year – keep an eye out for her real wedding report in a future issue.

THE FLOWERS

Adèle Brown from Tin Can Florals specialises in vintage-inspired arrangements, so she was the ideal florist to have along on our 1930s-themed shoot. She crafted two bouquets for Rachel – a handtied arrangement and a shower bouquet, a style that’s coming back into fashion – as well two buttonholes for the groom and arrangements for the table. The flowers used included cosmos ‘Black Beauty’, David Austin ‘Tess’ and ‘Freedom’ roses and hellebores, all in rich, deep shades of velvety red and purple-black. Adèle also added some glam to succulents, wax flowers, scabiosa seedheads and the foliage by adding a tinge of gold spray for a metallic pop. The reds of the flowers picked up on the shade of the bride’s lipstick and created a wonderful flash of colour against the ivory dresses.

THE CAKE

From her studio in Pill, Emma Buston creates wedding cakes with flair and imagination. Her creation for our shoot was a simply stunning three tier cake in white and gold. A metallic bottom tier made from edible gold leaf added glamour, and an Art Deco touch was added with piping work to the top and middle tiers. Three sugar flowers made from pure white petals crowned the creation. Emma started out with a degree in catering

and hospitality management and then worked as a commis chef. A passion for sculpting sugar flowers led her to set up Bake My Cake, and she now runs the business from a special studio kitchen next to her house. As well as looking beautiful, Emma’s cakes also come in a range of delicious flavours, including white or dark chocolate mud cake, tiramisu-inspired and frangipane sponge. Yum!

THE STATIONERY

Our Art Deco-inspired stationery set was created by Shutter and Flash, a business new to the South West wedding world. Multi-talented Shutter and Flash offers a range of wedding services from its Bristol studio, so whether you’re after a photographer, videographer or stationery designer, the company can help! Run

by Davinder and Bhupinder Singh Chana, the city centre studio enables Shutter and Flash to offer portrait and family shoots, as well as hosting photography-themed hen parties, children’s parties and other celebrations. And, if this wasn’t enough, the company also offers a range of printing options, including 3D! Its work for our shoot included name cards, invitations, pop out thank you cards and table numbers, all beautifully designed in a monochrome palette with gold touches.

THE CAR

A super stylish six seater Rolls Royce Landaulette was our choice of vintage car for the day from Triggols’ Vintage Cars’ excellent collection. This 1930s motor is the most recent addition to the company’s fleet, and its black

colour is the perfect foil for a bride’s white or ivory dress. The year it was made was, of course, also very in keeping with our theme! All of Triggols’ cars are driven by its friendly and knowledgeable chauffeurs, who include the father and son team behind the company. Whether it’s the six seater navy blue Austin (perfect to fit everyone into!) or the 1921 Model T Ford, the cars are beautifully presented and beautifully driven, allowing you to arrive at your wedding in true vintage style! Keep your eye out in this final series of Downton Abbey for some of the fleet, too.

THE PROPS

Event’s LOVE letters, which certainly lit up this magnificent space! And what better than lightbulb letters, reminiscent of a star’s dressing table, for a Hollywood glam wedding? This Bristol-based company also offers a range of other props, including mini table numbers, a vintage drink station and giant MR & MRS letters. We also used the latest addition to LightHaus’ props, a photo wall that comes with a chaise longue. Hire this and you’re guaranteed to give your guests hours of fun with hats, wigs and other accessories, as well as the opportunity to create some interesting portraits of you as a couple!

THE TABLE

Our wedding breakfast table was made even prettier with tableware and gold banquet chairs from Prestige Event Hire, a company offering a range of items to hire for weddings and other events. We used beautiful gold beaded charger plates and liquorice table napkins paired with 60

crisp white crockery to create a table that was a feast for the eyes! Best of all? Prestige offers a free washing up service with every offer! The table was given a touch of extra pizzazz with a beautiful gold sequin tablecloth from Pudding Bridge’s Sequin Collection. This shimmering linen is also available in silver, champagne and antique gold, all of which are perfect for making your celebration just that little bit more sparkly!

THE MODELS

You may recognise Rachel Harvey from some of our previous shoots, as this natural in front of the camera has been both an autumn and a winter bride for West Weddings. When she’s not modelling wedding dresses, Rachel works in medical records at the RUH in Bath. Groom Tamer Latif also has a medical connection, being a pharmacist at a hospital in Staffordshire in addition to his work as a professional model.

ou’re getting married. You’ve thought through every last detail; planned, prepared, budgeted for, designed and dreamed all parts of the day so it goes without saying that you want to remember every moment of it Beautiful photos and a video of the key moments are pretty much standard, but what else can you do to keep your memories cherished and precious? We’ve got some other, more unusual, suggestions for remembering your wedding. This ensures you can enjoy retelling the story of your wedding, not just to yourselves but to future generations!

DON’T JUDGE A BOOK...

Many people send a beautifully bound book around their tables or leave one on a table in the corner for the wedding guests to write messages to the happy couple. It’s a lovely way of capturing a moment and message from all the people who have helped to make your day so special. Guest books, however, can be as inventive and unique as the rest of your wedding and can also be so spectacular they’ll form a piece of artwork for your walls for years to come. 64

Winter 2015_Beinspired.indd 64

The drop top guest book is the brainchild of Bristol artist Zoe Gibbons. This is a large frame with an open top into which guests can drop their own messages written onto a wooden heart, or a silk leaf or a little butterfly (or whatever shape you wish). The individual messages all fall individually around a fixed point, which can also have the wedding date and the names of the bride and groom on it. “I started to develop the idea of a guest book that the happy couple would be able to display as artwork afterwards so that the messages were visible to them, rather than being hidden away in a book,” explains Zoe. “I also liked the idea of it being fun for guests to do and something that developed and filled during the wedding day – an interactive and dynamic guest book/ artwork. I use a lot of trees and leaves in my artwork as I find them beautiful and inspiring, connecting us with the earth and our our ancestors. They also symbolise the tree of life, which is perfect for a new marriage and the start of a new family.” Trees are also a popular motif in another special type of guest book, the thumb

print design, which is a great way of commemorating who was at your wedding. At the start of your wedding a bare tree adorns a canvas, then throughout the day your guests add their thumbprints to the branches, making the tree bloom into life. They can then sign their name to let you know whose print belongs to who. You can choose to stick to one colour, to match the theme of your wedding, or go for all the colours of the rainbow. Don’t forget to leave wet wipes next to the ink pads so your guests can wipe their thumb afterwards! After your wedding you can frame your ‘guest tree’ and have a beautiful picture with which to remember your wedding. We love the designs by New Forest Print.

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

As well as recording your guests’ thoughts and wishes from the day, there will be so many little bits and pieces from your wedding that you may wish to keep that a beautiful, bespoke box is a fantastic option. Having a box made specially for you, engraved with your name, or maybe printed with a photo of the big day, will

ensure that your memories stay safe for many years to come. Bristol company Made By Ellis designs bespoke boxes, and suggests including more unusual items such as a pressed flower from your bouquet, a table decoration, a jar with sand or soil from your wedding venue, a little bottle of the perfume you wore, a cork from the Champagne and a handful of confetti, as well as the more obvious things such as an invitation, menu card, order of service from the ceremony and your place cards from the wedding breakfast. Chances are you bought a beautiful dress to wear for your special day, and while it’s unlikely that you’ll want to frame the entire dress (although some people do), it can be nice to preserve it in some way. Memories Everlasting provide a service where you can send off some material from your dress, or other bits of material from your special day, and have a completely unique and very sweet patchwork bear made. You could even have a matching one made with patches of the groom’s outfit. And if a bear isn’t quite your thing, how about a quilt, a cushion or, of course, a christening outfit?

READY FOR YOUR CLOSE UP

Photos will usually play a large part in recording your day, but there are lots of ways to use them afterwards in addition to displaying them in traditional albums or prints. How about a photobook, jigsaw, a set of mugs, a set of coasters for drinks, a phone case or a cushion? Companies such as Photobox, Albelli and Snapfish have some great ideas on their sites. Albelli has

also just launched a new product where you can have a photo printed onto wood. This gives an image a lovely old-fashioned, dreamy feel and is something that can be displayed inside or outside. If you’re a fan of vintage style, then check out A Loquacious Mind’s oneoff pieces of artwork that can be made from your wedding photos. Using the nineteenth century printing technique of gum bichromate, your photo is used alongside original illustration to create a romantic and beautiful image, creating a unique reminder of one of the most special days of your life.

Helen Dorritt soaks her stresses away with a trip to the Thermae Bath Spa

A

s I lay back in the deliciously warm water, I could feel myself completely relaxing. Copy deadlines, selling our house, where to spend Christmas… all of the worries that had been plaguing my mind that day simply floated away like the steam from the water’s surface. And this is why a trip to the Thermae Bath Spa is something I would highly recommend for any couple in the throes of wedding planning! My husband Steven and I were at the spa to try its Twilight for Two package, a special offer for Sunday-Friday evenings that gives you three hours in the spa, a meal in the restaurant and complimentary use of a towel, robe and slippers. It was the night before our fifth wedding anniversary when we hopped on the train from Bristol to Bath, and we were thrilled to be starting our weekend of celebrations with a trip to this magical place. Opened in 2006 and building on the bathing tradition for which Bath is renowned (and which of course is reflected in its name!), the Thermae Bath Spa is an oasis of calm in a bustling city. Step off the Georgian streets into this stunning building and you’ll be able to enjoy the naturally warm waters (at a perfect 32°C) that flow from Bath’s hot springs into both

the indoor Minerva pool and the outdoor not-to-be-missed rooftop pool with its glorious views over the city skyline. There’s also a steam room with four different aromatherapy areas and an extensive range of treatments available as optional extras, including couple’s massages, facials and hot stones treatment. I was very tempted by the intriguingly-named watsu, the spa’s signature treatment that takes place in the historic Hot Bath, a third private pool, and which combines shiatsu massage and acupressure – I’ve now earmarked it for a future birthday present! In addition to the main complex, there’s also the smaller stand-alone Cross Bath, an intimate openair thermal pool across the street. This can be hired for exclusive use for groups of up to 12 people, so would make a great treat for the night before the wedding for the bridal party or as a thank you and relaxation after the big day. After spending some time soaking in the rooftop pool and watching a beautiful peach-hued sunset, we headed to the Springs Café for dinner. We shared a leek and feta cheese tart to begin with, then both chose the chorizo and black pudding Wellington for our main course, a rich mixture surrounded with deliciously crispy

pastry and accompanied by salad and tasty relish. Because we were celebrating our anniversary we also indulged in some pommes pont neuf (chunky fried potatoes to you and me), and to up the relaxation factor enjoyed a glass of red wine that was included as part of the package. Steven also couldn’t resist a piece of millionaire’s shortbread to finish it all off! Once the shortbread had settled we tried out the indoor Minerva pool, and spent a very happy hour floating in a foam noodle around the gentle whirlpool and enjoying the bubbles in the jacuzzi area, plus a further fifteen minutes in the deliciously-smelling eucalyptus pod in the steam rooms. Both of us left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and with super soft skin, and very eager to make a date here again for next year’s anniversary!

A nail varnish that protects as it colours? Yes please! Micro Cell’s Colour Repair range is infused with silicon, calcium and green algae to help improve the quality of your nails, and has a lovely glossy finish. Our tester was very impressed with the staying power of the polish, which survived several days without a chip. There are eight gorgeous colours ― our favourite is Charming Rose, a very wearable soft pink which is perfect for a bridal look. MICRO CELL W: WWW.MICRO-CELL.UK.COM

2

Not a new product to the market but one of our favourite recent discoveries, L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil is a fab addition to your winter shower routine. This oil cleverly turns into a foam on contact with water, and leaves your skin super soft as it cleans it, meaning you don’t need to worry about applying extra moisturiser after your shower. The scent is absolutely delicious too, just like marzipan! L’OCCITANE W: WWW.UK.LOCCITANE.COM

We’re a bit of a fan of facial oils here at West Weddings, so we were excited when this new daytime version from Kiehl’s landed on our desk. Daily Reviving Concentrate is a lightweight moisturising oil for day wear, featuring 100% natural oils including sunflower and tamanu. The product is paraben and mineral oil-free as well as being non-comogenic and non-acnegenic, so is great for all skin types. A great way to keep your skin hydrated in the cooler months and get it photograph-ready! KIEHL’S W: WWW.KIEHLS.CO.UK

4 A brand new launch for this season, Bagsy is a range of handbag sized makeup essentials. We love the packaging, with its pretty patterning and fun quotes, and the products themselves are great. Our favourites are the creamy Pretty Cheeks Velvet Blush and the clever Wonder Wand, which is a concealer and illuminator all in one handy pencil. Perfect for popping in your w-day handbag to touch up your make-up during the celebrations! BAGSY W: WWW.BAGSYBEAUTY.COM

When wedding planning all gets too much, head off for a soak in the bath accompanied by this gorgeous-smelling candle from Rathbornes. From its Beyond the Pale collection, it’s scented with bitter orange, tar and balsam, creating a sweet and smoky aroma that’s perfect for winter days. Since the wax is hand poured it burns very evenly, giving you a lot of burn ― and relaxation ― time. RATHBORNES W: WWW.RATHBORNES1488.COM

If, like us, you find your eyeshadow lasts for only a couple of hours before melting away, then this new primer from Urban Decay is definitely worth a try. The silky smooth (and paraben free) formula glides over lids and preps the surface, creating a base that ensures eyeshadow stays put. Our tester found it helped to keep her make-up in place all day, making it an ideal bridal product.

Wedding in a winter wonderland Dreaming of saying your vows in a picturesque snowy setting? Richard Jones explores how this can become reality at the stunning Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Canada

T

he scenic drive from Calgary, Alberta to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is considered one of the most spectacular in the world. The route past Canmore and Banff in the Canadian Rockies features exhilarating vistas of lush forests, jewel-like lakes and great strapping peaks. You could easily spend weeks driving back and forth on Highway 1A soaking up the staggering views. Once you exit the Highway, however, and make the short journey up through steep subalpine forests from Lake Louise village across the river, you catch a glimpse of the Chateau, and that first view of this exquisite hotel will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and your jaw drop to the floor. This hotel has a legendary reputation as one of the most picturesque hotels in the world, and although you may have seen pictures before you arrive, nothing can prepare you for the sensation when you first set eyes on it. Surrounded by soaring mountain peaks, the majestic Victoria Glacier and the glistening emerald lake, the iconic Chateau is located in Alberta's Banff National Park. Since its opening in 1911, the property has become a 70

Winter 2015_Beinspired.indd 70

true North American icon, with world-class restaurants, including the acclaimed Alpineinspired Walliser Stube and a remarkably personalised service. Originally built to function only in summer, the hotel was ‘winterised’ in 1982 and now offers all the usual ski resort fare during the winter months. If skiing and snowboarding aren’t your thing, there are ice skating rinks marked out on the frozen lake itself, sleigh rides, ice-sculpture contests and snowshoe excursions. The area around the lake itself, which is named after Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, is also teaming with wildlife. Of course, in the winter, most of the grizzly bears are sleeping, but grazing deer and elk are still a common sight. A group of animals which certainly aren't shy, however, were the excitable and adorable Alaskan huskies at Kingmik Dogsled Tours, who run a service taking tourists on exhilarating sleigh rides through the snowblanketed forests around the Chateau. Lake Louise doesn't have the nightlife of bustling city Calgary or nearby party town Banff, and the small village is home to just a

few restaurants and shops. What the area does have is plenty of pistes, and also some very special guides to show visitors around. The Lake Louise Ski Friends were formed back in 1978, initially by the wives of those working at the ski resort in the Banff National Park who wanted something to occupy their time during the winter months. A group got together and volunteered their services to help show skiers and snowboarders of all ages or abilities around their resort. Nowadays they number over 100, and effectively act as tourists’ own personal tour guides around the mountains. Wedding parties can be led to the best runs on the front and back side of Saddleback Ridge, including the World Cup Downhill course, and a few hidden gems, without once having to consult a map. For a wedding party who really wants to splash out, Fairmont Gold, the hotel chain’s private concierge floor experience, features exclusive amenities and highly personalised service designed to exceed the expectations of the most discerning guest. But whatever suite you are booked to stay in at the Chateau, you are guaranteed a room with not just a view,

but THE view – the natural beauty of the majestic Victoria Glacier and frozen lake. Romance and the Chateau go hand in hand, and the resort was recently chosen as the setting for the US version of The Bachelor TV reality show. Any ceremony or reception here really is a winter-themed wedding with a difference, and the staff at the Chateau are committed to making your wedding celebration perfect in every way. The resort experts also provide information on obtaining an Alberta marriage licence, and can send sample menus from its talented Executive Chef over to Blighty beforehand, so you can

plan all the details in advance. If you believe that your special day deserves a winter wonderland setting to match, then the Chateau should be at the top of your list. The hotel is naturally graced with all the elements of a magical celebration. Embraced by mountains frosted with white wedding cake snow, glittering glaciers and a sparkling lake, what other inspiration do you need on the biggest day of your life?

A problem shared Rebecca Paddick tackles some common wedding day dilemmas, with a little help from some brides and experts in the know DILEMMA: Can I have someone else besides my father walk me down the aisle? SOLUTION: The bride’s father traditionally walks her down the aisle, but you can have anyone who is significant – your mum or stepdad, brother, sister or even your children can give you away. When Lisa Coyne tied the knot back in 2009, her 11-year-old son walked her down the aisle. “I asked James to do it because I felt it was a great way to make him feel included. It meant so much to me to have him involved, and I was so proud of him,” she says. DILEMMA: My parents are helping to pay for the wedding, but how can I tell them I don’t want to invite certain people? SOLUTION: It may be best to give your parents an allotted number of spaces they can fill as they wish. If there are certain people you do not want in attendance, it’s best to have a private and honest conversation when you first discuss the guest list.

Weddings WEST

Winter 2015_Beinspired.indd 73

Catherine Price’s parents covered the majority of the costs for her big day two years ago, but she managed to maintain full control of the invitations. She says: “I’ve seen how these situations can spiral out of control so I thought it was best to make clear from the start who I wanted to invite. It’s tricky because you don’t want to seem ungrateful to your parents but they may need to be reminded that this is your big day. I wanted my dearest friends at my wedding, not a distant cousin I hadn’t seen since I was a child." DILEMMA: Am I expected to invite all of my colleagues from the office? SOLUTION: “You don’t have to invite everyone you work with, but try to pick a logical dividing line, such as your division or team, so people don’t feel excluded,” says wedding coordinator Anita Sullivan. “Treat any invited colleagues as you would friends, and invite them outside of work, sending them an invitation in the post.”

DILEMMA: Some of my guests have asked to bring their children but we don’t want any kids at the wedding ceremony. What do I do? SOLUTION: Former wedding planner Abigail Giles says you should be clear on this topic when sending out your invitations. “Write something along the lines of ‛whilst we love and adore all of your little people, we would like our wedding to be a grown up day and the opportunity for parents to let their hair down and have some child free fun.’ You’ve then set the expectation from the start." DILEMMA: Is it okay to ask people to just the evening part of the reception? SOLUTION: “Before I got married I would have said no,” says Abigail. “If they’re not good enough friends to get an invite to the whole day then don't do it ― it’s a bit like rating A and B grade friends. I think the exception to the rule is work colleagues. I personally had about 60 additional guests to the evening made up of work friends and their partners.” “Just make sure you don’t divide ‘groups’ of family and friends up,” advises Anita. “For example, if you’re inviting colleagues, make sure they’re all on the same invite list. The same goes for family; you need to treat both sides the same.” 73

DILEMMA: Is it acceptable to ask for money rather than having a gift list? SOLUTION: The general consensus is that it is okay to ask for cash, so long as you tell your guests what it’s going to be spent on. Make sure your guests are clear that buying a present is entirely optional. Mandy Clifford tied the knot in 2009 and says she kept the topic of gifts very casual. “My husband and I lived together for quite a few years before we got married so we already had everything we needed for our home. We didn't officially ask our guests for money; however, if they asked us if we had a gift list I said no but that we’d like to go on a nice honeymoon. The majority of our gifts turned out to be cash – which contributed towards a fantastic holiday in Dubai.” DILEMMA: Can the bride make a speech? SOLUTION: Yes! Although traditional wedding etiquette would only see the father of the bride, the groom and the best man speaking, as with all modern weddings, tradition can and should definitely evolve. Jenn Hodges decided she was going to make a speech at her wedding back in 2012. “The groom and the best man get to speak, so why not the bride and the chief bridesmaid? Thankfully my speech was well received, and I hope that more brides feel confident enough to stand up in front of everyone and say a few words. Why should the leading lady be seen and not heard?” DILEMMA: Do I have to wear white? SOLUTION: Definitely not – it’s your day to shine, so wear what you think suits you best. 74

Winter 2015_Beinspired.indd 74

“While trying on traditional white dresses I was disappointed with what I had seen,” says Catherine. “They all looked the same, and none reflected my style or personality. But then I spotted a red and white dress hanging on the rack and I knew it was the one for me, even before trying it on. All of my friends and family know that I don’t stick to tradition, so I just went with something that was completely right for me.” DILEMMA: Is it OK to ask my bridesmaids to buy their own dresses? SOLUTION: “If finances dictate, then yes, but have this conversation face-to-face and choose bridesmaids who will understand your

financial predicament,” advises Anita. “Be clear that you are happy for them to choose an affordable design they can wear again. Expecting them to fund a bespoke bridesmaid gown is a definite no-no!” Abigail adds: “In an ideal situation you would buy your bridesmaids’ dresses, but if you’re asking bridemaids to buy their own then I think you need to give them a colour and let them find something that will suit them, as that way they may get some wear out of again. Don’t insist on all the dresses matching. Another option is to buy the dresses from the high street and ask them to buy their own shoes and accessories. This will help to keep the costs down."

Six hundred years of history Helen Dorritt steps back in time at the magnificent Bristol Grammar School

here aren’t many wedding venues in the South West that date back to 1532, especially in the heart of a city centre, which is why Bristol Grammar School is such a great find. By day it’s a school for 4-18 year olds, but by night this glorious venue is opened up for events, making it a spectacular setting for a wedding reception. Accessed by a dramatic stone staircase with brass handrail, the main event space, the Great Hall, certainly lives up to its name! Built in 1879 for teaching, it became a function room in the 1940s – a much better use for this beautiful room. A fifty foot high hammer beamed ceiling, polished wooden floor and leaded glass windows creates a truly magnificent light-flooded setting, offering 7,000 square feet and a capacity of up to 380 seated. The Great Hall has grandeur in spades, so it’s perfect if you’re after a venue with a real sense of history, while its sheer size is ideal if you’re planning a wedding reception with a lot of guests, but don’t want to sacrifice character and charm. A magnificent organ loft is perched high above the hall, the instrument in it costing over £1,000 back in 1880 – that’s around £2

million in today’s terms! You’ll find a stylish black grand piano in the hall as well, so your guests can be serenaded while they celebrate with you. Lots of gorgeous touches abound, such as the coloured shields held in the hands of stone figures on the ends of the beams, a raised wooden dais (ideal for displaying your cake!) and the portraits of former headmasters around the walls. The grounds of the school also provide a lovely backdrop for photos, with stone archways and magnificent doors to frame your images. The venue has a number of recommended caterers including Relish Events, Kate’s Kitchen and Mahirs, all of whom can offer food packages to suit the day you’re planning, whether it’s a banquet, buffet or canapés. Hire of BGS also includes the services of a dedicated wedding planner to help the day run like clockwork, plus full use of the kitchen and parking for up to 100 cars. Not that your guests may need them, as BGS is just steps from city centre transport links, making it an incredibly easy venue to access. All this adds up to an ideal mix of historical splendour and modern convenience – what better combination for your reception?

ere in the West Country with its hundreds of years of farming history, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to barn venues. From tithe barns, which were used to store produce given by farmers to the church, to agricultural structures that once housed cattle or hay and now have been restored to a shiny new function, these rural buildings make picturesque setting for your vows. Flagstone floors that once stored grain now reverberate to the sound of happy dancing feet, and exposed beams, stones and grand doorways make ideal backdrops for your photos. COTSWOLD CHARM Part of Binley Farm, which has been farmed by the Gale family for over 80 years, Kingscote Barn is a textbook example of a beautiful barn that’s been sympathetically turned into a wedding venue. With honey-coloured Cotswold stone, exposed beams and fields around as far as the eye can see, it’s no surprise that this licensed venue has won The Wedding Awards’ ‘Best Venue in the South West’ for the past three years. There’s also a range of accommodation on site so you can 78

Get married in the stone barn itself or outside in the woodland glade, and then make the most of the outdoor setting, with firepits and bonfire areas lighting up your evening reception – the venue is also well known for the tasty barbecues it can lay on. It also has a number of sister barns, including Stone Barn outside Cheltenham. CRIPPS BARN FOSSCROSS LANE, CIRENCESTER, GLOUCESTERSHIRE GL7 5BA T: 01285 740035 W: WWW.CRIPPSBARNBIBURY.COM

WINE AND DINE Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard hosts weddings in its two barns, with the ceremony held in the seventeenth century ‘Old Barn’ and the reception in the modern ‘New Barn’, which was built in 2013 and complements the

CRIPPS BARN older structure beautifully. Aldwick is also a working vineyard – the only one in Somerset – and makes white, rose and sparkling wines that can accompany your wedding breakfast. Add to this a stunning backdrop of the Mendips and you’ve got yourself a piece of rural heaven! ALDWICK COURT FARM AND VINEYARD REDHILL, BRISTOL BS40 5RF T: 01934 864404 W: WWW.ALDWICKWEDDINGS.CO.UK

and set in very pretty grounds. It’s possibly the oldest wedding barn in the country, dating back 800 years, and the hex marks carved into the wooden beams are there to ward off evil spirits and get your marriage off to the best start! It’s licensed for ceremonies of up to 100 guests, but if you would like a religious ceremony, there’s also a picturesque medieval church just steps away.

BARN-STORMING Priston Mill has a beautiful tithe barn in which to say your vows and then dance the night away. It has an impressive 15m high vaulted ceiling making it light, bright and airy, and is

surrounded by private gardens which are ideal for outdoor drinks and photos. If the weather’s a little cooler, head to the barn’s parlour to be warmed by its wood-burning stove. The venue has retained its ancient charm while also being brought up to date with some lovely contemporary touches. Top marks! For a reception with style and grandeur, head to Clifton College says Helen Dorritt

R

ight in the heart of Bristol’s most exclusive area, Clifton College is a beautiful venue for a wedding reception. If you’ve always loved the Oxbridge style of architecture – grand stone buildings surrounded by well-maintained grounds – then you definitely need to take a wander around. It’s Brideshead Revisited meets Harry Potter: historic buildings with a real sense of elegance. Whatever the season, the venue is a delight. In warmer weather you can enjoy its extensive outdoor areas and have reception drinks on the lawn, or even take the wedding breakfast outside with a barbecue. In the cooler months you can soak up the atmosphere of the sumptuous interiors with a glass or two of mulled wine or West Country cider! When it comes to those interiors, the College has a space to suit, whether you’re planning a large or more intimate reception. With its vaulted ceiling, oak panelling and

arched windows, the Grand Hall holds up to 180 guests, while for smaller celebrations the Cricket Pavilion on the lawn is just the right size. The grounds of the College are a photographer’s delight, too: expansive lawns mingle with hidden nooks and crannies to create memorable backdrops. We love the Cloisters, where you and your partner can sneak away for some photos of just the two of you, and the arched side entrance that’s also a poignant war memorial. The College has an experienced in-house team to help organise the day, including a wedding co-ordinator (who recently celebrated her own marriage at the venue!). Food is cooked on site and tailored to your taste and budget so your wedding breakfast will be a feast to remember. Best of all, you get the venue on an exclusive basis, meaning that you and your guests can celebrate this special occasion in an easily accessible yet perfectly private spot.
