Muscle movement sensor technology ViSafe is wireless sensor technology which measures movements and muscle activity of the low back, shoulder and upper and lower limbs for people performing work tasks. The sensors are small and low profile, so workers can wear them, unimpeded, over a whole day, while they perform their usual work tasks. ViSafe assessments provide an objective picture of how people move at work so organisations can then develop strategies to eliminate, reduce or better manage physical effort and injury risks. Strategies may include different task methods, equipment, workplace layout and designs and staff training and can be assessed with the product prior to implementation to ensure their suitability. dorsaVi Pty Ltd Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/N173

Rehydration ice blocks and drinks Hydralyte at Work is a clinical rehydration product manufactured to pharmaceutical standards and listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Effective hydration is best achieved by a solution that is low in sugar (2-3%) and high in electrolytes. Competitor rehydration products in this market are registered as food goods and often very high in sugar (some up to 30 teaspoons/L) and low in the essential electrolytes, claims the company. Hydralyte at Work contains on average a quarter of the sugar found in these ‘sports rehydration drinks’ and has been formulated to rapidly replace fluid to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance. Hydralyte at Work rehydration ice blocks and drinks relieve and help prevent muscle cramping and fatigue, maintain healthy physical and mental function, and reduce the risk of hyponatremia and heat exhaustion in prolonged activity. DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING
Alcohol testing The Draeger Alcotest 6510 can be used for precise and quick breath alcohol analysis. Its range of possible configurations means the handheld instrument can be easily adapted to meet different international regulations and guidelines. Automatic sampling and calibration processes make the instrument easy to use. All measurement functions are controlled via a single key, while menu navigation is by two menu keys. The mouthpiece design means they can be fitted quickly and securely even in poor light conditions and its electronics technology is said to ensure the instrument is quickly ready for use. The 1/4″ DraegerSensor with its optimised gas dynamics measures specifically alcohol. Even at high alcohol concentrations, direct gas paths, fast pneumatic components and short reaction times of the sensor ensure the measurement result will be displayed quickly. The instrument can fit into a shirt pocket and its ergonomic design makes it easy to use for right- and left-handed people. The separation of the grip area and the mouthpiece ensures a certain distance between the hand of the operator and the mouth of the person to be tested. Safety relay Electrical connectivity supplier Weidmuller has released its SIL 3 Safety Relay. Created specifically for use in the emergency shutdown of plants and plant components in the process industry, the device increases plant availability and safety. It ensures safe electrical isolation of the safety PLC to the field and initiates protective measures in the face of danger or immediately cuts the energy supply. The device’s safety and monitoring circuits each have a yellow LED to indicate the functioning of the relay and ensure faultless operation. In the output of the safety circuit, there is a redundant connection of three relays to guarantee reliable isolation within the output circuit. The safety relay is fitted with gold-plated contacts and an additional switching current range of 6 mA up to 5 A of the monitoring circuit permanently guarantees reliable reaction of the emergency shutdown system. In addition, the time span between Relay ON and Response is only 4.5 ms (230 VAC) and 5.7 ms (120 VAC) respectively. For added flexibility and user convenience, the product offers a widespread rated operational voltage of 120/230 VAC at the input of the monitoring circuit. A wide temperature range of -25 up to +50°C makes it suitable for use in numerous environments including harsh surrounds. Highly compact, the product is only 92.4 x 22.5 x 112.4 mm. It requires little space in a control cabinet and can be easily mounted on a TS35 DIN rail. The device meets the requirements of EN61508 as well as the safety demands of Safety Integrity Level 3. Electrical chain safety modules When there is motion, it can generate friction between machine parts and consequently static electricity may build up. At contact with an earthed body this can be discharged; potential differences of up to 10,000 V can occur. The current is usually relatively low, but sensitive electronic component parts can be irreparably damaged. To avoid such damage, all components of a machine need to be discharging so the entire system needs to be earthed throughout. Permanent and reliable discharging of energy chains is especially important to avoid electrostatic build-up - even after years in use. Electrostatic discharge is not only dangerous for electronic component parts - they can contribute to the combustion of burnable gases, dusts or vapours in areas with a danger of explosion. Wherever such conditions exist, for example in the chemical industry, material bulk handling or in coating lines, ESD energy chains contribute to avoid electrostatic discharges. igumid ESD has been designed for applications where there are any electrostatic discharges that are potentially damaging; for instance, manufacturing or handling of sensitive electronic products and component parts. Made in conformity with ATEX guidelines for 94/9 EG for devices and systems in potentially explosive areas, these energy chains are certificated according to the EX II 2 GD classification, meaning ESD/ ATEX energy chains from igus can be used in areas where gas or dust can cause the risk of explosion. Power for hazardous zones Quint DC/DC converter power supplies equipped with selective fuse breaking can be used in hazardous zones and in shipbuilding. The converters trip circuit breakers reliably. Faulty circuits are selectively shut down so that the fault is localised and important system components remain operational. With rated output currents of 5 to 20 A, the devices supply peak currents of 30 to 120 A for 12 ms to magnetically trip circuit breakers. The converters operate with DC input voltages of between 18 and 32 VDC and the range is expanded to between 14 and 32 VDC during operation. Depending on the device type, potentiometers at the front of the device can be used to adjust the output voltage for the ranges 5 to 18, 18 to 29.5, and 30 to 56. By boosting the voltage on long supply lines, the modules change the voltage level or compensate for loss-related voltage drops. As a result of the electrical isolation, they separate circuits to decouple and protect sensitive loads. Phoenix Contact Pty Ltd Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/Q262

The product is claimed to provide lower installed cost and better fire protection when compared to standard coverage sprinkler systems. Benefits of the system include: few branch lines and sprinklers as a result of the extended coverage area; low operating pressures; low hydraulic system demand; fewer opened sprinklers and consumed pallets than standard coverage sprinklers as shown in full-scale fire tests. The product is said to provide the minimal water requirement for ceiling heights of 10.5 m or less. Wormald (Tyco/Fire & Security) Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/Q043
Flame detector The MSA FlameGard 5 MSIR Flame Detector’s neural network technology NNT 4-IR sensor combination is said to make the detector highly immune to false alarms. The multispectrum IR (MSIR) sensor array provides increased range and wide field of view. Its continuous optical path monitoring (COPM) checks optical path integrity and the detector’s electronic circuitry. The company claims that no other flame detector can match the NNT weighted systems, with others using only a pass/ fail algorithm. The company claims that in a flame detector test (150′ distance between detectors and 1 x 1′ gasoline fire with all units set to high sensitivity; all confirmed to be in working order) the FlameGard 5 MSIR Flame Detector detected the fire 4 s before other detectors and the MSA detector saw the fire for 16 s longer than the other detectors. Fog maker Idrotech’s Elefante fog maker can be used to combat dust problems at mine sites. The fog maker works by shooting a strong, continuous plume of fine mist or fog up to 60 m long. Because the fog particles are similar in dimension to the dust particles, they combine easily with one another and, aided by gravity, fall to the ground. It is suitable in open cut mining environments and building and road construction sites where dust is a significant problem. The fine mist spray is propelled by a fan, upon which three concentric nozzle rings are mounted. A wide range of nozzles of different capacities can be fitted to the rings, providing the right water volume to suit the situation or environmental condition. The mist droplets generated are fine and they evaporate quickly, which avoids problems associated with water pooling or runoff. The device can be mounted on a wheeled trolley or fitted to a concrete base or trailer. Tecpro Australia Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/S121

Temporary roof anchor The temporary roof anchor - for use on metal deck and corrugated sheeting roofs - is suitable for tradesmen who work on residential roofs which do not have permanent fall arrest systems installed. The portable roof anchor is rated at 15 kN and designed for single-person use. The fixing of the anchor to the roof is simple - remove four roof screws, put the anchor in place and replace the screws through the anchor into their original holes. The removal is just a reversal - remove the screws, remove the anchor plate and replace the screws into their holes, thus leaving the roof exactly the same as you found it. To use the anchor point, simply connect the snap hook of your ropeline, which is already connected to your harness via an energy absorber, to the energy absorber permanently connected to the anchor. This allows you to move out from the anchorage point to your work area in a full 360° around the anchor point. Safemaster also supplies an Anchor Strap, which is used as a temporary anchor point on tile roofs. This is also rated at 15 kN and designed for singleperson use. It is just as simple to use - simply push back a tile and wrap the strap around the rafter or top chord of the truss and connect the snap hook of your ropeline onto the D-ring on the end of the strap. Multiple light beam safety device The M4000 Advanced multiple light beam safety device detects persons accessing the hazardous area of a machine during operation and immediately switches it off. In combination with the UE403 safety switching device and application-specific muting equipment, the system can monitor the hazardous areas of end-of-line machines while allowing material to be transported through the protective field. In this way, protection can be achieved for palletising robots, foil wrappers and strapping machines, for example. With the help of additional sensor signals, the active protective equipment can be temporarily bridged in order to allow material transport into or out of a palletiser. During the muting, the timing and logical sequence of signals from muting sensors is monitored and evaluated. At the same time, based on the structure of the muting system, it is necessary to ensure that nobody is able to enter a hazardous area. When a pallet passes, switching off of the machine by the M4000 Advanced is suppressed, but if a person passes, the entire conveyor process is subjected to an emergency stop. The device is equipped with the ‘exit monitoring’ function wherein the muting sensors are located within the hazardous area. Depending on the safety requirements, the length of time that muting is maintained in the M4000 Advanced can be adjusted from 0.5 to 4 s. The set time starts automatically on release of the first muting signal and, on completion, ends the muting process. In compliance with the new EN 13855, if the 4-beam active/passive system is selected, the safety distance can be shortened or the lowest beam of the active/passive system can be located below the conveyor system, preventing the need for supplementary mechanical guards to prevent access by crawling below the system. Metal and X-ray detector test pieces Having metal and X-ray detectable products online to avoid contamination is only effective when the actual detection machines are also working to the specified detection levels. Regular testing of these machines is the only way to ensure they are compliant with quality assurance standards; the best way to do this is using metal and X-ray detector test pieces. CK Safety supplies a complete range of test pieces, manufactured by Detectamet. All test pieces are supplied with a certificate of conformity, with each test piece having a number etched onto its side which relates to this certificate supplied by the bearing manufacturer. “Detectamet” is also etched onto each test piece, and a company name can be added on request. Extra numbers can be etched onto the test pieces if required, to allow for individual identification purposes. Contamination ball bearings for metal and X-ray test pieces are available in a variety of materials such as stainless steel 316, ferrous, non-ferrous, glass, ceramic and wire. The metal detector test pieces are colour coded for simple visual verification and fitted with a calibrated and certified bearing to ISO9002 and AFBMA Calibration. The test pieces are manufactured from a variety of plastic materials, including acrylic, PVC and polyethylene. They are suitable for use with end-of-line, inline, throat, gravity, pipeline and conveyor metal detectors. The X-ray detector test pieces are transparent but with highly visible certificate numbers, ball contaminants, sizes and identification. They contain contaminants in sizes from 0.3 to 10 mm. The range includes low-, medium- and high-density materials acting as the medium, combined with test contaminants of varying densities. Electric forklift range Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has launched its 8FBN range of four-wheel, counter-balance, battery electric forklifts. The 8FBN series consists of five models, ranging from 1.5 to 3 tonne rated capacity at 500 mm load centres, with a choice of masts, hydraulic controls and attachments. Features such as pedal-stroke regenerative braking increase times between charges and Toyota claims the range also offers improved safety and environmental performance, reduced operator fatigue and increased durability. The range includes an AC power system and improved equipment layout, as well as more efficient motors and controllers. The company claims these changes give around a 5% improvement in operating times over the 7FB models. 8FBN series forklifts include automatic turn-speed control which combines lift-height and load-weight-sensing along with turn-speed control to automatically limit the forklift’s speed when turning. Vehicle speed, acceleration and deceleration are limited at high lift heights, according to the load carried. Further options include a height selector, joystick controls, shock sensor, corrosion protection pack and a cold storage pack for operating at -45°C. Toyota also offers the choice of roll-in-roll-out or fork pockets at the bottom of the battery case for a side-out battery that can be used for multishift application. The active-mast function controller includes rear tilt levelling and an active steering synchroniser. Water resistance to IPX4 rating and zero emissions, including a design free of hexavalent chrome, mean the range is suitable for a variety of uses and may challenge some engine truck applications. In some situations storage space can be increased by up to 50%, not only lowering storage costs, but also reducing the number of lift trucks and associated labour required. Double handling is therefore eliminated as the product can be taken directly from the truck or van to the storage location. The forklift can operate both indoors and outdoors, able to do the work of both indoor electric reach trucks and engine-powered outdoor counterbalance forklifts. It is available in both battery electric and LPG, with various lift height options up to 10.5 m. Nichiyu Australia Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/R185

Flexible intermediate bulk container The Hazibag flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) is certified under UN regulations for transport and storage of packing group II & III solid DG. It was initially built with asbestos in mind, but its uses extend to medical waste, contaminated soils, PCBs, veterinary waste, toxic woods, emergency services contaminated equipment and quarantine. It comes in four different sizes to suit all needs and products: the 1 m3 certified for packing group II & III, the asbestos-specific 1.5 m3, the larger 3 m3 and the De-con Hazibag. The 100 L De-con bag is specifically designed for the emergency services to transport their contaminated equipment. It comes with water-soluble, one-time-use liners. The contaminated equipment gets loaded into the water soluble bag, which in turn goes into the Hazibag to be sealed and transported to the decontamination centre. There the bag can be opened and the contaminated equipment/ clothes can go straight into the decontamination chamber or washing machine while still inside the plastic bag. No secondary handling or contact with the contaminating agents. The bag will dissolve in the wash when it comes in contact with the water. Electromagnetic field monitoring Narda Safety Test Solutions has a way of installing an electromagnetic field monitoring and alarm system in the form of the Narda NBM-580 Broadband Radiation Meter. The device collects the measurement results from up to eight distributed measuring stations and records them continuously, triggering alarms if limit values are exceeded. A way to monitor limit values, eg, on transmitting equipment or in an industrial environment, is to use Nardalert S3 Monitors as measuring stations. Running from a DC supply and connected to the radiation meter by fibre-optic cables, these monitors provide continuous measurement values referred to settable threshold values. This means that any limit violations can be immediately detected, reported and recorded. Narda NBM-520 Broadband Meters with measuring probes are suitable for more precise monitoring. These record electric and magnetic field strengths with a dynamic range of up to 60 dB. The radiation meter processes all the results centrally. They can be displayed directly on the screen or read out via the IEEE-488 interface or remotely accessed via ethernet. Up to eight monitors or broadband meters (or a combination of both) can be connected to it at distances from a few tens to hundreds of metres. Four optical and four USB inputs are provided for this purpose. Low- and high-current alarm relays are also built in. Wireless safety system The WiLERT ‘Wireless Alert’ Beacons are omnidirectional and designed to be installed on walls, bollards or even moving infrastructure. They’re compact and can be orientated in any direction and simply screwed in place. When activated, the bright beacons appear to rotate, making them more obvious than even larger beacons in most applications - even in broad daylight. The system can be activated either by wireless handheld or wall-mounted remote controls, or ‘wirelessly’ networked so that multiple beacons in a security-coded network can be activated by network-enabled devices such as IR photo beams, pedestrian pressure mats or other sensors for automated applications. Available with amber, red, blue or green LEDs, an installed system can be expanded at any time by adding more beacons or networked activation devices, simply by using that network’s security code. Cut-resistant gloves Constructed from a blend of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and glass fibre with a PU (polyurethane) palm coating, the DX5 gloves provide abrasion, cut and tear resistance. The palm coating enhances the gloves’ grip, sensitivity and resistance to oils and greases, without compromising the dexterity and touch of the glove. The elastic memory of the glove ensures it does not absorb water and therefore retains its properties after washing or if exposed to water, making the gloves washable and re-usable. The gloves are rated against EN388 as 4542 (Abrasion Level 4, Cut Level 5, Tear Level 4, Puncture Level 2). Personal PID safety monitor The Cub personal photoionisation detection (PID) monitor can be used for fast yet accurate detection of volatile organic and total aromatic compounds, keeping workers safe within their work environment. It is suitable for use in industries and applications including: oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical plants, health and safety, industrial hygiene, pharmaceutical, first response and hazardous materials. With its parts-per-billion (ppb) sensitivity, the product gives an early warning of exposure to hazardous gases, including benzene, and it is claimed to be the smallest, lightest and most sensitive PID monitor available. The PID monitor is capable of detecting over 480 selectable gases and has a dynamic range of 1 to 5000 ppm, said to be the widest range available. Small, compact and lightweight, the monitor is robust yet comfortable and unobtrusive to wear. When worker exposure exceeds preset limits the instrument’s audible, vibrating and flashing LED alarms alert the worker to the gases present. Readings are displayed in ppb and mg/m3 on its bright, backlit LCD with selectable data logging time. The product is available in three variants: a ppb or ppm instrument with 10.6 ev lamp for accurately detecting a wide range of VOCs dependent on sensitivity requirements, and CubTAC with 10.0 ev lamp for the accurate detection of total aromatic compounds (TACs) down to ppb levels. CubDoc docking stations are available for USB communication, charging and calibrating the instrument, dependent on requirements. The instrument’s PID sensor technology has been independently verified as best performing for speed, accuracy and humidity-resistant operation. Its Fence Electrode technology and anticontamination mean the unit is unaffected by humid and challenging environments, providing accurate, reliable results and extended run time in the field. The product has been developed as part of a family of PID detectors to be used alongside the PhoCheck Tiger VOC detector and Tiger Select for total aromatic compounds (TACs) and benzene detection. lightweight, compact, well balanced, easy to use and easy to maintain. All headtops in the range provide a direct stream of flowing air to the head and face. The moving airflow can make hot environments more tolerable while greatly reducing visor fogging. The TR-300 Powered Air Respirator is a lightweight, slim, easy-to-use air delivery unit for environments with particulate hazards. Versaflo headtops are crosscompatible with Jupiter Powered Air Respirators and Versaflo V-Series Supplied Air Regulators. With this product range, pressure on the face, breathing resistance and heat build-up are reduced when compared to non-powered tight-fitting facepieces. Flowing air supplied to the wearer reduces the additional breathing effort required, in comparison to half- and full-face respirators. This increases user comfort at all times and is especially important during periods of strenuous labour. 3M Safety Products Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/N149

lists or sign-off sheets. The auditing process is streamlined by a simple interface with clear, concise questions to be answered on-screen. Audits are a vital component of safety management that identify potential safety issues and risks. But paper-based audits make it hard to accurately describe safety risks identified during an audit. iAuditor uses the iPad’s high-quality camera to deliver crisp, clear images of workplace issues, attaching these images to the final report. Users can draw details on images or create a drawing from a blank page. The app has a form-builder tool which allows users to make their own forms, quickly and accurately converting their paper audits to digital forms for repeated use. Alternatively, using the SafetyCulture Secure Online Cloud, users can download a variety of ready-to-use audit templates that are free of charge. Users then have the option to share their auditing templates with the cloud for other users to download and use. The intuitive interface makes for a streamlined approach to safety audits. Audits can be quickly organised by name, worksite or GPS location to effectively manage a large database of audits. The app’s flexible and scalable nature means users can customise it to use in any industry. Once the audit is complete, the app will accept digital signatures direct to the iPad screen, meaning a record of compliance is permanently stored. A PDF including any photographs can then be instantly emailed to an email address and opened on any computer, tablet or smartphone. The web integration of the app makes for prompt and efficient movement of safety information within businesses. Safety Culture Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/M643
