Q
:I’ve been living at the same rental property for years and have a great relationship with my landlord — I look after the property and they leave me alone. I’m thinking of installing an above-ground pool and wonder how permanent they are and if I need to get permission first?
A
:Above-ground pools come in a range of shapes and sizes, making them a solid option for properties where more permanent in-ground options aren’t practical. However (and this is a BIG ‘however’), you should absolutely NOT install a swimming pool without first seeking approval from the property owner or their agent. New and existing swimming pools are subject to a range of stringent requirements as specified under both state legislation and the specific council rules applicable in your area. All swimming pools need approval prior to installation and must be registered with your local government authority. You may be on good terms with your landlord now, but that may change if you barrel ahead with no consultation. It’s probably best to strike up a conversation and outline your thoughts. Who knows, they may see it as a value-add and be willing to contribute to the costs... or not… but you won’t know till you try. Good luck! CREATING A RESORTSTYLE HAVEN IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD NEEDN’T BREAK THE BANK.
S
o, you've got the pool — the backyard gem that’s seen its fair share of cannonballs, lazy afternoons and impromptu poolside parties. Craving that next-level luxury? That five-star resort feel right at home? These ideas will help quickly transform your pool into the ultimate private oasis.
1. LOUNGE LIKE A VIP First things first, let’s talk lounging. Upgrade your poolside furniture to something fit for a VIP cabana. Think plush, oversized cushions, stylish sunbeds and maybe even a cosy daybed for those lazy Sundays. Opt for weather-resistant materials
WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
so you can live the high life without worrying about wear and tear. Your poolside seating should scream relaxation and make you feel like you’re on a holiday every day.
2. DECK IT RIGHT Your pool deck is like the red carpet leading to your aquatic sanctuary. A facelift will give it the attention it deserves. Invest in quality decking that not only looks fabulous but also stands up to the elements. If your budget allows, consider adding a touch of elegance with travertine, stone or even a sleek composite material. A wellmaintained and stylish deck instantly elevates the entire pool area.
3. WATER FEATURES FOR THE WIN One of the secrets to achieving resort magic is by incorporating captivating water features. There are retrofit options available, so adding a water feature is still on the cards even for established pools. Consider a soothing waterfall, an elegant fountain or even deck jets that shoot streams of water. Not only will they create a tranquil ambiance but they’ll create that touch of opulence we associate with luxury hotels.
4. A DASH OF GREENERY Bring in the tropics with some well-placed greenery. Palm trees, verdant bushes and vibrant flowers will transform your pool area into a lush paradise. Strategically place them to create natural barriers for privacy and an extra touch of exotic flair. If you're not exactly a green thumb, opt

9. FINE-TUNE YOUR POOL TECH
for low-maintenance plants that can survive both your pool parties and the occasional neglect.
5. LIGHTING THAT SETS THE MOOD Your pool area should come alive when the sun sets, bringing with it a sense of excitement and anticipation. String lights, lanterns and strategically placed LED fittings in and around the pool will help create the perfect mood — romantic, exotic or otherwise. Take it a step further with a smart lighting system that lets you control colours and intensity with a single tap on your phone, putting you in charge, letting you set the mood and run your own light show.
6. UPGRADE YOUR POOLSIDE BAR
12 | POOL&SPA
7. POOLSIDE GOURMET EXPERIENCE Elevate your poolside cuisine beyond the standard fare. Create a designated outdoor kitchen space with a built-in barbecue, a pizza oven or even a smoker. Invest in high-quality cooking utensils and stylish outdoor dinnerware. Imagine sipping a cocktail by the pool while the smell of a gourmet meal wafts through the air — that’s the five-star experience.
10. KEEP IT IMMACULATE Resort-level luxury means dealing with issues as soon
8. LUXURIOUS POOL ACCESSORIES No resort-style pool is complete without some swanky accessories. Upgrade your pool floats to something more sophisticated and comfortable than a pool noodle. Invest in oversized, plush towels, robes and slippers. Consider adding a floating cooler to keep cool drinks within arm’s reach. These little touches may

If you’re looking to truly live the five-star life, why not bring the bar to you? Consider adding a poolside bar, stocked with your favourite beverages and quality glassware. It may not come with poolside
service, but if space and budget allow, a small fridge will help keep things cool. Bonus points for some stylish bar stools and a bartender kit for those aspiring mixologists.
In the age of smart homes, why not have a smart pool? Invest in a pool automation system that lets you control everything from water temperature to lighting with a touch of a button. A state-of-the-art pool cleaning system will keep your oasis sparkling without you having to lifting a finger. Technology is your secret weapon in maintaining that pristine, five-star pool experience.
as they happen. Regular maintenance, proper cleaning and prompt repairs are the hallmarks of a luxury hotel pool. Stay on top of any issues and your pool will always be ready for its close-up. Creating an atmosphere worthy of a five-star resort is in reach if you focus on the finer details. Incorporating just a few of these ideas can help elevate your pool experience and deliver that luxurious, holiday-worthy lifestyle at home. So, go ahead, spruce up your oasis, invite your friends over and prepare to luxuriate at home — because who doesn’t deserve a five-star splash every day? Effortless pool maintenance
N
ew technology is making our everyday life easier. We enjoy the benefits of automation — from factory production lines to coffee machines and driverless cars — and your pool should be no exception. Robotic cleaners give you freedom to spend your time doing something more fun than cleaning your pool. Operating independently of other pool equipment, they reduce pressure on your pump and filter, while also saving water as they don’t require any backwashing. An energy-efficient option, robotic cleaners require little electricity to run and help prevent wear and tear on other pool pad equipment. WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
Maintaining a robotic pool cleaner is a breeze, with many models incorporating removable and cleanable filter cartridges, ensuring they always operate at peak performance. A little regular maintenance ensures they remain effective over time and enhances their overall durability. They’ve also gone through refinement and improvement over the years, with the newest additions now featuring a cordless design, with a rechargeable battery. This removes a major pain point for users, where tangled cleaner cords once created issues and made storage a chore. The battery capacity in your chosen cleaner
will determine how long it can run during a cleaning cycle — the bigger the cell, the longer the cleaner can run and the more ground it can cover. Cordless robotic pool cleaners also come equipped with a range of advanced feature options that elevate performance. Intelligent navigation to ensure efficient coverage, internet connectivity and easy collection option once the cleaning cycle has finished are just some
of the options for added convenience. Investing in a cordless robotic swimming pool cleaner is a step towards effortless pool maintenance, delivering energy and water efficiency, time savings, ease of maintenance, convenience and a host of advanced features. Say goodbye to the hassle of manual cleaning and dive into the future of pool maintenance with a cordless robotic pool cleaner.

S
lip, slop, slap… we all know the mantra. In terms of raising public awareness, the SunSmart ad series is the stuff of legends. Originally launched in the early 80s and imploring us to “slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat”, the campaign was updated in the mid-2000s to include two new Ss. We’re now advised to also “seek” shade where possible and “slide” on a pair of sunglasses in addition to the first three steps — especially when the UV index is at three or above. While it may have lost the catchy three-word slogan in the process, the newer messaging is more complete and gives us a clearly defined starting point for action. So, what is the UV index, what do the numbers mean and how can you get a current reading?
UNDERSTANDING THE UV INDEX The UV index (UVI) is an international standard used to measure UV radiation intensity in a specific place and at a specific time. It basically tells us when we need to use sun protection like sunscreen, hats, clothing and sunglasses. The index is linear and spans from 0 to 11+. It’s arranged a bit like the old fire danger rating scale before it was revised in 2022 — from low to extreme. A reading of three or above indicates a moderate intensity that requires sun protection. As a guide, most Australian capital cities see an average daily maximum 16 | POOL&SPA

of three or higher for all but a couple of months each year. In Darwin and Brisbane, that average is three or above year-round, while Hobart and most of New Zealand slip to an average of one or two between May and August. The bottom line is that being outdoors across most of ANZ — for most of the year at least — means wearing sun protection during nominated hours.
Summer 2024
But how do you know what the nominated hours are? Weather reports now include generalised sun protection advice when the UVI exceeds three, as do many of the weather apps. For a more accurate picture — including a three-day forecast, live UVI readings for your location and time-specific sun protection details — check out the Sun Smart app. Developed by the Cancer Council and available in the usual places, the free app gives you precise info to a suburb (in Aus) or city (NZ) level, making it easy to plan for a safe day in the sun.
SUNSCREENS AND SPF Back in the day, sunscreens were called suntan lotions and oils. As the name implies, users were focused on extending their time in the sun to achieve a dark tan, rather than actual protection. When sun protection factor (SPF) numbers were first introduced, they were much lower — SPF2 offered minimal defence, SPF4 was moderate and SPF8 was generally reserved only for those with the palest of skins. We’ve come a long way. While SPF15 sunscreens are still available, you’d be hard pressed to find endorsement of anything WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

troughs that form our skin at a microscopic level and to bind properly. You probably also know that you need to reapply every two hours and after swimming or exercise — regardless of what the label tells you. In news that may have escaped you though, it seems we’ve all been falling short of the suggested standards by not applying enough product. The advice is one teaspoon per limb, one for the front, another for the back and a final teaspoon to cover face, neck and ears. That’s seven teaspoons (or 35 mL) per person, every time you apply — that’s
probably a lot more than you think it is. Sunscreen product sizes are remarkably inconsistent, with smaller personal tubes starting at about 35 mL and topping out at 90–100 mL. That’s just one full application for one person at the low end, while the larger sizes aren’t quite delivering three. You’ll get about seven goes out of a 250 mL container, while a 500 mL pump bottle is good for around 14 applications — that’s just shy of three each for family of five. If your usage isn’t stacking up with these numbers, you’ve probably been under-applying according to the experts.

less than 30. Contrary to popular belief, higher SPF numbers don’t mean you can stay in the sun for longer. SPF15 filters out about 93% of UVB radiation — the rays that cause sunburn and add to skin cancer risk — versus 97% for SPF30, while SPF50+ achieves about 98%, making it the preferred option in virtually every case. We’ve always been told that sunscreen should be applied 15–20 minutes before exposure, which isn’t just some arbitrary number. According to the Cancer Council, that time frame allows the product to flow through the series of peaks and Summer 2024

ULTRAVIOLET PROTECTION FACTOR
like poolside umbrellas, beach shades, tents and other shelters.
In 1996, Australia and New Zealand developed a standard for sun protective clothing. It’s been through a couple of iterations since, but the original intent remains — to classify clothing by the level of sun protection it offers. Sun protective clothing, including hats, shirts and swimwear like rashies and paddle suits and kids’ swimsuits, should incorporate a tag that shows an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number, as determined by the standard. This number indicates the level of protection offered under a three-level classification system. The UPF classification is also applied to other items
HATS, HEADWEAR AND SUNGLASSES
18 | POOL&SPA
Hats should protect your face, head, neck and ears, so baseball caps and sun visors won’t cut it. Look for close-weave fabrics that block light and hats that feature a dark inner lining, so UV radiation isn’t reflected onto your face and eyes. Broad-brimmed or bucket hats with a deep crown that sit low on the head are the best choices. Kids’ legionnaire-style swim hats are a great way to keep necks covered both in and out of the water. Sunglasses should offer protection from UV radiation — but not all do. In Australia and New Zealand, lenses are
Summer 2024
categorised from 0–4. Look for options that have a lens category of 2, 3 or 4, which will absorb 95% of UV radiation, while 0–1 are fashion items only and offer no protection. Some sunglasses feature an eye protection factor (EPF) from 1–10. The higher the number, the more protective they are. An EPF of 9 or 10 exceeds the Australian standard and blocks almost all UV radiation.
A WORD ON LITTLE ONES
Little bubs have sensitive skin, so sunscreen use is not recommended for those aged under six months. Cancer Council also suggests keeping babies under 12 months out of direct sunlight when the UVI is three or above
and avoiding the hottest times of the day. If you are out and around the pool, remember to keep little ones in the shade and use protective clothing and a hat. Check out the Sun Protection and Babies fact sheet on the Cancer Council website (www.cancercouncil. com.au/ and search “sun protection for babies”) for detailed information.

The clear difference
F
or most pool owners, once you have installed your pool or are simply looking for a replacement, the pool filter may one of the least thought about components necessary for the effective function of your swimming pool. Overshadowed by other, more exciting pool equipment items like the cleaner and pump, the pool filter is incredibly
critical to ensuring you get the cleanest swimming water. Working in partnership with the swimming pool pump, there are many types of filters that offer certain advantages including optimum filtration, efficiency, installation, ease of use and maintenance. Desirable water clarity should be one of the most important aspects a filter should provide but
122| POOL&SPA | POOL&SPA Summer Summer 2022 2024
so too is the level of its maintenance and effects on the environment. These are all important factors to consider. POSI-CLEAR CARTRIDGE FILTER Introducing the PosiClear RP Cartridge Filter from Pentair — the clear solution to everything you could ask for in a filter. This new design is nearly 50% more efficient than
many other single cartridge filters on the market and filters down as low as 20 microns. In addition to its excellent filtration properties, the Posi-Clear is designed to be easy to use and maintain, giving you more quality time in the pool than cleaning it. EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE What really sets the Posi-Clear apart from its competitors is the raised

offset port for the water to enter the filter. This design creates a cyclonic effect inside the filter which disperses large matter and debris to the side to get caught in the internal trapping ribs. This debris then falls to the drainage area where it can be easily disposed of. Through this ingenious and effective design, larger debris won’t get caught in the cartridge WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
element thereby reducing its filtration effectiveness. What this means is less cleaning and more effective filtration. WELL-THOUGHT-OUT DESIGN When designing the PosiClear, ease of use and maintenance was key to its creation. Like most other filters that require multiple bends to connect to the pump, the Posi-Clear only
needs one. This means better water movement efficiency and ultimately less strain on your pool pump. Other well-thoughtout designs include easy access to cleaning the filter elements through a quick release locking ring, a wider diameter cartridge to keep filter element pleats further apart for better filtration coverage and a larger drain to allow for larger debris to drain away.
IDEAL FOR ALL POOLS The Posi-Clear Cartridge Filter from Pentair has been designed for use on all pools, especially for pool pads with limited access or small spaces. Available in three different sizes, the Posi-Clear can cover pool sizes ranging from a small pool of 20,000 litres up to 120,000 litre pools. With all it has to offer, the PosiClear will undoubtedly be your hero of your pool.

TIPS Streak-free glass fencing
G
lass fencing is a popular choice for swimming pool enclosures. A less obstructive option than some other materials, glass can make your poolside area look bigger and help create a seamless link between the pool and the rest of the backyard and other entertainment areas. Clean glass is one thing, but streaky or dirty glass can detract from the whole view, pulling your eye in to focus on the wrong element entirely. Keeping glass squeaky clean needn’t be a full-time job, so here’s some tips to get streaky-free fencing with a minimum of fuss. • If you opted to apply a protective coating to your glass fencing, it has probably already made life a little easier. Protective finishes can substantially reduce the amount of cleaning you’ll have to do — up to 90% according to some manufacturers. They are also designed to repel water, which means you don’t have to wipe or squeegee them down once you’ve cleaned. A bit more expensive at the outset, protective coatings reduce damage and staining from chemicals and minerals in the pool water, so they should pay for themselves in the long run. Some manufacturers guarantee their product for a specific number of years, while others offer a lifetime warranty. 38 | POOL&SPA

• Don’t get too caught up thinking you need to invest in expensive specialist glass cleaning products. Some of the best results can be achieved using simple detergent or a mix of vinegar and water, depending on how long it’s been between cleans and what type of dirt and stains you’re dealing with. • To start, give both sides of the fence a thorough hose to remove dry dirt, dust and cobwebs. Add some detergent — dishwashing liquid is fine — to warm water and use a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge to wipe down both sides of the glass, keeping an eye out for problem areas, like sap stains from trees. Once done, hose down both sides again. • If your glass is coated with a protective finish, you can probably just leave to air-dry. If not, use a squeegee or a clean, dry, lint-free cloth (microfibre works well) to dry both sides of the glass. • For a truly streak-free finish, go old school and get your hands on some newspaper — which may be a big ask in today’s digital world. An age-old remedy, the black-and-white pages (not colour) of the paper make an amazing glass cleaner.
You might want to wear gloves to avoid the print transferring to your hands. • Some pool water chemicals or minerals can leave longer-lasting marks or stubborn stains that need a different approach. If detergent doesn’t do the trick, try a half/half mix of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Use newspaper as described above to really attack the stains. • Regular upkeep is the best way to avoid stubborn stains forming in the first place, so try to clean as you go. That means hosing down the glass after a day of splashing, to help reduce the effects of chemical and mineral contact. Remove plant gum, sap and bird or other animal droppings as soon as possible to avoid permanent marking or staining. • Don’t use abrasive cleaners or scourers — even those that claim to be designed for glass — as they can do more damage than good and may void your warranty on protective glass finishes or coatings. If you do have a coating applied, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for best results. Summer 2024

Pool safety in Australia hinges on this
I
n the ever-evolving landscape of home design and safety, Australians recognise the importance of reliable and robust features that aim to protect their families, particularly when it comes to pool safety. Polaris Hinge has fast become the preferred choice for homeowners across the country — and for good reason. With our warm climate and a culture that embraces outdoor living, it’s no surprise
that Australia has more backyard pools and spas per capita than almost any other country. Pools are not only a source of recreation but also pose potential risks, especially for households with children or pets. Australia’s pool fencing regulations are among the world’s most stringent, so the type of fencing, gates and gate hardware you select are critical decisions when building a pool. Owners are required to install compliant barriers

that prevent unauthorised access, with specific guidance around practical concerns like height, design and maintenance. Fences and barriers are also subject to inspections and certification to ensure they meet all necessary requirements. As a nation, we are making strides in reducing the number of pool-related accidents and drownings, ensuring that pools remain a source of enjoyment and that community care is a priority. This is
largely due to a sustained effort promoting water safety — spearheaded by Royal Lifesaving Society Australia — and investment by homeowners into technologically advanced pool safety equipment including motion sensors and pool covers. After years of research and development, and the ultimate safety in mind, Glass Hardware Australia developed the Polaris Hinge in 2010. There were many challenges in creating the safest, longest-lasting WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
soft-closing hinge available — a hinge that could serve Australian families and offer true peace of mind. Polaris Hinges are renowned for durability and strength, making them an ideal choice for a multitude of applications. When it comes to pool safety, they play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe, soft and secure closure point to pool access, helping to prevent potential accidents. They include a safety cap with ‘no foot hold’ gaskets so that kids can’t use the WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
hinge to mitigate the fence height and make it easier to scale. The soft close also prevents injuries to little fingers. Polaris Hinges were incorporated into all six homes on Australia’s much-loved reality TV program, The Block, in 2022. The show is renowned for setting trends in home design and construction and recognised not only the importance of aesthetic appeal but also the fundamental need for
reliable safety features. Contestants and builders communicated a clear message: safety is nonnegotiable and Polaris is the trusted solution. Beyond functional attributes, Polaris Hinges offer a sleek and modern design that complements contemporary architectural styles. Homeowners can now seamlessly integrate safety measures without compromising on the overall aesthetic of their outdoor spaces. Versatility extends beyond pool gates to entry points around the property.
For use on almost any type of gates and access points, these hinges provide a consistent level of safety and high performance. That adaptability contributes to the product’s popularity among architects, builders, and homeowners, making them a preferred choice for a wide range of applications. For safety, durability and reliability, there is only one choice for your family, Polaris Hinges. For detailed product information and specifications visit polarishinge.com.au or scan the QR-Code.

Coping
Y
ou probably haven’t thought much about your pool coping. It’s the cap or edge that forms the inner perimeter of your swimming pool — it’s the place where you sit and dangle your feet or the WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
lip that your toes hang over when you’re about to dive. Coping has a few jobs, including decoration, damage prevention and swimmer safety, which makes it an essential part of your pool’s construction in terms of both form and function.

IN OUR NEW ‘ANATOMY OF A SWIMMING POOL’ ARTICLE SERIES WE’LL BE CHECKING OUT THE VARIOUS PARTS AND SYSTEMS THAT MAKE UP YOUR SWIMMING POOL. IN THIS ISSUE, WE’RE COVERING COPING — WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT DOES AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT. DECORATION
There’s a pretty much infinite range of available coping material types — concrete, brick, pavers, travertine, marble, granite, sandstone, limestone, flagstone, bluestone… the list goes on. Each material has its own properties
and, while some are limited in colour or finish, others are available in an endless range of options. You can easily find a coping choice that will blend with pool fundamentals like the interior or decking, as well as other external

“Coping has other jobs besides being a pretty face. ”
Coping has other jobs besides being a pretty face. In concrete pools, it sits above the tile line and protects the pool edging, known as the bond beam — a course of concrete and steel rebar. Without coping, the pool edge would be exposed 46 | POOL&SPA
SWIMMER SAFETY There’s a lot of action on the pool perimeter. If you’ve got kids, you know they’re more likely to haul themselves out wherever they are than head for a ladder, steps or ledge. Coping makes entry and exit safer and easier for everyone by eliminating sharp edges and minimising scrapes. Bear in mind that some coping surfaces are more abrasive than others and may grab on the delicate fabrics used in some swimming costumes.

DAMAGE PREVENTION
and susceptible to damage in the longer term. In fibreglass pools, the coping sits across the top of the horizontal fibreglass shell edge. The coping edge helps separate the pool proper from the pool deck while it acts as a two-sided blockade. It stops water from penetrating behind the pool shell, which helps minimise damage that could lead to expensive issues in the future. It also keeps dirt and debris like grass clippings and leaves out of the pool. Though available edge options vary as described earlier, most coping designs tilt away from the pool itself, stopping splashed or overflow water from settling and directing it towards deck drains.

design elements including landscaping and outdoor living spaces. Of course, the alternatives don’t end there. The coping is an important consideration from both a practical and aesthetic perspective. Straight edge coping gives a sharp architectural finish, while a bullnose edge is a bit ‘softer’ visually, and more suited to natural-look or heritage pools and gardens. A drop-down (also known as drop-face or rebate) coping edge is an L-shape form that hangs closer to the waterline. It not only conceals the pool edging but is also a handy way to hide other components you don’t want to see, like the tracks used to guide automated pool covers. Repairing or renovating a pool often includes replacing the coping — it’s a great way to give a tired-looking pool a facelift and blend it in to a more contemporary setting.
Materials used for coping and decking are either naturally nonskid or have a surface coating applied to reduce slipperiness and prevent slips, spills and falls in and around the pool, ensuring a safe day of fun for everyone.
THE QUIET ACHIEVER As part of your pool’s skeleton, coping has a lot to do — despite flashier elements like the interior and decking competing for decision-making attention in new pool builds and renos. It’s a WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/ Evrymmnt
WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
vital component, helping preserve structural integrity by limiting water seepage and the damage and erosion that could cause. Coping is the finishing touch that elevates a pool from functional space to a captivating oasis. Its significance extends beyond the technical aspect of construction because it shapes the character of your swimming pool installation and contributes to the overall ambiance of your outdoor living area. Finding the right material for the job lies in its ability to withstand the challenges posed by pool environments — and yours specifically — including exposure to
water, sunlight, chemicals and salt. On top of all that, it has to look good too! Coping really is the quiet achiever. What appears at first glance to be a subtle feature turns out to be quite the linchpin of pool design — responsible for seamlessly integrating visual appeal with utility… all while safeguarding the longevity of your swimming pool installation. While it sounds like a lot to ask, it’s a clear demonstration of the importance of pool design decisions and working with an accredited SPASA professional, who can guide you through the process and deliver a project that meets your goals on every level.

Swimmers bring lots of contaminants into the water — like sweat, skin oils and lotions — so you need to keep an eye on the water and perform some other checks to keep everything running in tiptop order.Check and clean the skimmer basket and hair and lint pot basket weekly. Do this more often if the pool is used frequently or when leaves and debris blow into the pool.
3. Check the operation of salt chlorinators or automatic systems. The more people that use the pool, the more sanitiser will be required to kill algae and bacteria. 4. Check the pH every two or three days. 5. Check the total alkalinity (TA) weekly. Adjust the total alkalinity level with a buffer (sodium bicarbonate). 6. Check and adjust the timer to allow the filtration system to operate for six hours each day. Most people run their filtration system for three periods of two hours daily.
2. Check the sanitiser level, ideally daily, and add sanitiser to maintain minimum levels.
7. Take a sample of pool water to your local SPASA pool shop every two to four weeks during

8. Salt chlorinated pools may need additional salt. The production control on the salt chlorinator may have to be adjusted to increase or decrease its output. 9. Maintain the water level at least halfway up the skimmer box opening. 10. Regularly inspect plumbing for leaks. 11. To prevent algae and bacteria from growing, the walls and floor should be brushed and vacuumed at least once a week. Prevention is always better than cure, so be sure to stick to your maintenance program for hasslefree swimming all summer long.
