B.L.E.S.S.E.D Summer Ever! For many, summer is the best season in Minnesota. It’s when we are outside the most enjoying, not only the area’s abundant natural resources, but also special times with family and friends. The summer sermon series, “B.L.E.S.S.ed Summer Ever!” gives us an opportunity to do all those things as we develop relationships with others that bless both them and us. Blessing others has always been God’s way of reaching and restoring the world. Genesis 12:2-3 says, “…I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
B- BEGIN with prayer. Ask: “God how do you want me to bless the people in the places you’ve sent me to?”
This Summer we continue to learn how to B.L.E.S.S. others by doing the kinds of things we already do, just with elevated intentionality. The result is friends coming to a greater understanding and experience of the love of Christ.
S- STORY. When the time is right, now talk and share the story of how Jesus changed your life.
L- LISTEN. Listen to people, their struggles, their pains, in the places God has sent you. E- EAT. Have a meal with people-summer barbeques are great! Or enjoy a cup of coffee together--it builds relationships. S- SERVE. If you listen with people and you eat with people they will tell you how to love them and you’ll know how to serve them.
Make this your B.L.E.S.S.ed summer ever!

Students Fall Launch Wednesdays PM Register online beginning August 7. Boost (grades 6–8) 6:45–8:00pm Begins September 10 Woodside Middle school students gather to have fun, explore faith, and engage in small group conversation about the message each week.
Welcome to Student Ministries! We host Wednesday night programming for all students in grades 6–12 during the school year. Additionally there is Sunday morning programming for students grade 6–8 which meets all year long. New students and friends join us every week, so invite a friend today. Weekly, we seek to give students a place to connect with one another, a caring adult and with God. Large group messages encourage students to take the next step of faith, no matter where they are today. Beyond Coffee: Café Caffeinates Connecting! The smiling face interacting with customers and volunteers at our new Café Twelve:Two is Laurie Pearson, who is no stranger to food service establishments. Her father was a “restaurant man” and Laurie fondly remembers working (and eating!) at Lord Fletchers on Lake Minnetonka where he was the manager. She understands that sharing food together helps create a warm dynamic that encourages deepening relationships. “I want the Café to be like Caribou with love and heart!” said Laurie. “I want to create an atmosphere that encourages people, when they run into a friend at church, to say ‘Let’s grab coffee after the service,’ or to make visiting over coffee before the service part of their invitation to a friend to come to church.” Laurie’s husband Craig is a regular volunteer, a role reversal since, for many years, Laurie has partnered with Craig in his food service employment ventures such as when he led the food service ministry at Grace Church in Eden Prairie and, more recently, when he managed food service at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. In 2013, the Pearsons moved back “home” to Minnesota when Craig became Director of Operations at Oak Ridge Hotel & Conference Center and Laurie found employment as the Arboretum Catering Captain. Looking for a church home, they began attending Westwood. This spring, Craig saw the Café manager position posted in the Program and turned to Laurie saying, “How about you?” After praying about it, Laurie interviewed for the position and began to get excited about what the new Café can bring to Westwood. She enthusiastically accepted the position in June 2014. Working with Westwood’s Operations Director Kate Peabody, Craig and Laurie met with the current volunteers, assessed the Café set-up envisioned by the Building Team and developed a business plan. “We are working hard to bring a top quality product to the Café,” said Laurie. “We want all those who visit the Café, including regular attenders and especially guests and visitors, to have a great experience here, just like they’ll have in the worship service, children’s ministry and everywhere else.” The revenues for the Café help offset the costs of necessary equipment and salaries for Laurie and part-time staff. Recently added to the Café’s offerings are fruit smoothies and grab and go snack items. “There is so much more coming to the Café,” said Laurie, “like espressos, lattes and brewed ice tea, plus some wonderful bakery items.” The expanded offerings at the Café require the installation of additional equipment. To facilitate this, Café Twelve:Two will be closed during the month of August but express carts with coffee and water will be available at three locations in the building. The Café seating area will remain open for people to use. The grand opening of the Café will be on September 7, the same Sunday that the Woodside Room reopens.
“I love seeing people using the Café area, even when it isn’t open,” said Laurie. A group of men regularly hold a Bible study there, women linger after Bible study, and staff members meet there with members of the congregation. Individuals open up their laptops at the Café high tops. “A woman recently asked me if she could read her Bible there, as it was so quiet and peaceful. I love that!” said Laurie.
Meet Laurie Pearson, Cafe Manager
In addition to being open before and after the services, Laurie is looking into opening the café on busy weeknights, depending on the availability of volunteers. “We already have a great team of volunteers and I’m so grateful for the team that has served in this ministry for many years. We do have openings for more—I’d love to see a multi-generational volunteer team develop with high school students getting volunteer hours needed for school, working alongside both parents and grandparents!” Those interested can contact Laurie at 952-224-7446 or by placing their information in the volunteer box located in the Café. Laurie and Craig have three grown sons, one daughter-in-law (another wedding in August!) and they live in Victoria. Stop by the Café and greet them!

Imagine you are a young adult from Ukraine or Portugal and you sign up to work in the United States for a summer. When you receive your assignment you find out that you are going to a place called “Chanhassen, Minnesota.” Chances are you’d know no one and you’d be looking for friends when you got here. Westwood’s International Student Outreach (ISO) is just such a friend to international and American students that come to work for the summer at the Arboretum/Horticultural Research Center or Camp Tanadoona. Each summer the ISO team lives out the B.L.E.S.S. lifestyle to dozens of students. “The purpose of the ISO ministry is to meet the practical needs of local international students and build genuine and loving relationships,” said Beth Johnson. “Through these relationships, we demonstrate the way of Jesus.” That’s exactly what we’ve been learning about in the “BLESSed Summer Ever” message series. Camp Tanadoona Volunteers from the ministry team hold a welcome party at Westwood for the counseling staff of Camp Tanadoona in early June, prior to the start of the camping season. Over ice cream sundaes they met the staff, learned some of the fun camp games and songs, and presented them small gift bags as part of the connection process. A much-appreciated service during the summer is providing weekly shuttle rides to area stores. ISO team members drive the bus and serve as host. “It’s a fun time to converse and get to know the students,” said Beth. Occasional service projects such as food packing at Feed My Starving Children add both meaning and connection. Many students admit they have never volunteered to help anyone before. “Serving someone without expecting anything in return was a new concept for them,” said Beth. “One young man told me he was going to help people when he got back to his home country, his experience with serving at Feed My Starving Children really got him thinking.”
Some of the students walk over and take advantage of the basketball hoop in the Westwood parking lot. Home stay weekends with various Westwood families are offered, as well as dinner parties and dinner dates at area restaurants. Some take the families up on the invitation to attend a Westwood service. “ Minnesota Landscape Arboretum/ Horticultural Research Center Arboretum students arrive in April. The ISO team brings over pizza and gift bags as they introduce themselves, assess needs, and offer their services. “If they have a computer problem, we try to find someone to help. If they need a ride to the bank or grocery store, we find someone to drive them,” said Beth. “If they want to buy a smart phone, we take them to the mall.” One member of the ISO team is an English as a Second Language teacher who helps those desiring to improve their English. “The students are always amazed that someone would give up personal time just to help someone else,” said Beth “and the hours spent in the car driving to grocery stores and thrift shops have provided a way to build relationships just by talking. We listen as they talk about their home countries, their families, their fears, their hopes, their joys and sorrows.” Students have been appreciative of the friendship and services offered and some have been responsive to the invitation to attend services at Westwood. Beth recounted several recent examples: “One of the young men from Brazil working at the Arboretum/HRC asked me if he could come to church with me. I believe he did that because we have built a relationship and he trusts me.” A young woman from Belarus, largely unchurched, became a regular attender at Westwood during her time here. When she moved on, Westwood pastoral staff helped connect her to a church in Vancouver where she now attends regularly. Over the course of a summer
one young woman from Ukraine went from being totally suspicious of the team wanting to help her, to her offering to help serve at Beth’s daughter’s graduation party, to sending Beth a card with John 3:16 written out, to holding Beth’s hand and praying before a shared meal! Beth is blessed seeing God use the relationships that she has developed with the students. “I love seeing other people being transformed through the love of Christ in me. Thanks to Biblegateway. com I have been able to share several Bible verses in Russian, Ukrainian, Portuguese and Spanish with the students based on the conversations we were having, questions they asked or comments they have made. I have lived overseas and love to travel internationally, so I am very happy to be able to have international connections in the U.S., where the mission field has come to us.” The ISO Team would love additional people to join them. “We are a fun bunch of 50-somethings and will gladly take more, but it would also be nice to have some young adults join us since the Tanadoona students range in age from late teens to early 20s and the Arboretum/HRC ages range from mid-20s to mid-30s,” said Beth.

HYPE2014 Picture 107 middle school students (and 25 volunteer leaders) on buses headed to Grantsburg Wisconsin for summer camp. Is that an environment where you would expect to find the Holy Spirit working?! It is if the location is Wood Lake Bible Camp and the experience is Hype, five days of fun activity, worship and relationship building that Westwood 6th-8th graders experienced in June.According to Dianne Cotten‑DeKoning, Westwood’s Pastor of Student Ministry Grades 6-12, “the purpose of Hype is to create an environment where students connect to Jesus in a real way. Hype surrounds students with experiences that build their faith; cabin time conversations, worship, personal time with cabin leaders and prayer.” Cabin leaders are, more often than not, the students’ school-year small group leaders, allowing for continued relational growth. Through the many fun activities, students also get to know other students, shrinking a very large ministry group. Dianne served as Camp Director and was thrilled with this year’s Hype camp. “We had a fabulous camp with many students making commitments to follow Jesus either for the first time or more deeply.” Chapel was held twice a day, morning and evening. Students worshipped at both. The morning session included a talk by a cabin leader on topics such as prayer, trials and doing the right thing. 7th grader Lucy Browning said the morning devotions were her favorite part, “It was cool to see how the leaders live out faith in their real life,” she said. The evening session messages were shared by Dianne, Jordan Pardee and Lindy Magness and were an in-depth look at the parables of Jesus. “I learned from the parable of building your house on rock, not sand, that I needed to have
a good foundation to grow my faith in Jesus,” said Lucy. Through her TAG (Time Alone with God) time, she also began to talk to God personally, something she has found difficult to do at home.
At the closing session students shared about their experiences at Hype.
Each student, sometime during camp, had one-on-one time with their cabin leaders, allowing them to get to know one another better and providing students a chance to ask questions. “Students and leaders both said that the one-on-one time was a highlight,” noted Dianne. 8th grader Danny Ferguson said it was great talking about both “funny and serious stuff” with his leader, Nick. “The depth of relationships that are forged at Hype are equivalent to those developed over many months of Wednesday night programming,” said Dianne, noting a distinct advantage of camp ministry.
“This was life changing. God has become a priority.”
A meaningful experience for many students was the prayer that was shared at Hype. Students were invited to receive individual prayer by the leaders. Danny used that time to go around to students and ask if they would like him to pray for them; he prayed that they would remember the week, remember that God loves them, and remember that He is with them all the time.
“God will always be with you.”
“I found Jesus again and I’m not going to let Him slip away.” “I want to talk to God as much as I can.”
“I accepted Christ into my heart.”
“I felt God’s presence this week.” “Prayer really does work.” “Hype showed me Jesus.”
“My group encouraged me and I really felt something from Jesus.”

50+ Ministry Takes Shape After 18 years of serving as Westwood’s Pastor of Worship Arts, you have spent the last year transitioning to the 50s-Plus ministry. Where is that ministry at now? We’ve determined a name for the 50s-plus ministry: ‘Telios’ which is the Greek concept of ‘bringing people to completion’: we want to take the person in the second half of life and do everything we can to bring them to completion in Christ so that they can reach their potential as a son or daughter of Christ. When we went into the transition year, we set up three strategic goals; to survey interest in an Adult 50+ ministry (overwhelmingly strong), set up a broad-based leadership team (we have 12 outstanding people speaking into the ministry’s development) and to begin the planning process for the rollout of the ministry. We have developed a direction for the 50s-plus ministry. While it is going to be felt-need driven, ironically we don’t see our job as necessarily to meet felt needs but to use felt needs to drive people to true needs as they are a maturing adult in Christ. We realize the only way a human can age well is to age well in the manifest love of God, made real through His Son and, through aligning our lives in obedience to Him, availing ourselves of the resources He provides. In Christ, we look forward to the inward person being renewed day by day. The world says you reach your zenith and then it’s down hill from there. The Bible says that as we continue to grow, we grow in grace, knowledge and understanding, and that gray hair is the gold crown of God’s human creation. Biblically, aging is a blest process of ever-increasing significance, meaning and purpose. While the spiritual maturity needs transcend the ages, felt needs of 50s plus adults vary significantly by life stage from the fifties through the nineties. At the younger end of the spectrum there are issues of dependent adult children, marriage stress, and caring for aging parents. At mid-life there are issues of identity, meaningful work, some health issues, as well as newfound desires for spiritual growth, meaningful relationships and preparing for a retirement with significance. At the higher age spectrum there are issues
14
of relational loss and loneliness, loss of independence as transitions begin to happen in housing, and often declining health. What do you want to say to those over the age of fifty about the 50s-Plus Ministry? What kind of an experience do you want to have with your life over the remaining time that God is going to grace and bless you with living? The choices that we make now will determine the quality of our experience in our latter years. It’s critically important for those of us that have reached the pinnacle of second-half living to answer these deep questions: “Who am I?,” “Where am I going?,” “And how do I want to use the remaining years of my life?” The sooner we ask the questions and the sooner we get on the path of making the right kinds of choices, the better our aging experience is going to be. What are the benefits of engaging in the 50s-Plus Ministry? The ministry is designed so that people can get into a process for life that we are calling missional living; aligning with Westwood’s mission of knowing God, worshipping authentically, growing spiritually, connecting relationally, and serving joyfully. We will program around those themes so that adults 50 and above can do some life assessment and determine where they need to focus most to bring their life into balance as they look at the second half of their life. We are encouraging people to look at what the Bible says about “wellness of body,” and doing everything we can to help people remain as physically able as possible, not so people can say, “don’t I look great,” but health so that we can be used of God, in missional living, so that we can do the work that God has called us to do, as ably as we can, for as long as we can. This
brings us meaning and purpose in life. There is this whole wonder of mid-life re-assessment, we used to call it mid-life crisis. People above the age of 50 are asking questions such as “Am I the person God wants me to be?” and “Am I doing what God wants me to do?” This questioning process can be used of God to bring a person to their potential in Christ. We will challenge people to think of their vocation, their calling of God for life. Who has God created them to be? We’ll encourage them to get on a path of discovery today and not stop until they die. The ministry will be designed and structured so there are multiple on ramps of involvement; such as service opportunities, connect relationally events, and growing spiritually opportunities such as “Twelve Keys to Living Agelessly” that we are offering in the fall. Watch for a newsletter that will communicate the range of “on-ramps.” Are you having fun? I am surprised at how much I am enjoying this! As I interact with the leadership team and participants in this ministry, there is a thrill and wonder in looking at all the major issues of life and discovering that we don’t necessarily have to be what we have been, or trapped by what we have done. There is an incredible zest and joy in the huge amount of potentiality for our lives now. We are in the process of ever becoming what we are giving ourselves to, in other words our “now” determines our future. There is a child-like sense of awe and wonder to this. I am surprised at how vulnerable people are willing to be, how much they are embracing the key concepts, how much they want to grow and change, and how much we laugh along the way.
