How does Kids’ Ministries get to be the church “Here, Near and Far?” HERE: We look for compelling ways to make home the center for spiritual growth; for parents to be their own kids’ spiritual heroes; and to point our kids toward Jesus and His example of extravagant love, forgiveness, grace, mercy and generosity. Over 200 Children’s Leaders faithfully teach kids about Jesus each and every week at Westwood. We hold exceptional parenting classes, like “Cyber Safety,” “Discipline That Connects,” and “GIST.” “HomeFront Weekly & Monthly” are terrific takehome pieces available to all families that really connect church to home. NEAR: Westwood kids are inspired and challenged to be a blessing to those in need here in the Twin Cities through their weekly offering, and do they ever bring it!!! Our current focus supports CRU INNER CITY—for every $38 our kids bring, it provides one Care Kit for folks who are homeless. Kits consist of much-needed personal hygiene and care items wrapped in a warm blanket. We are blessed to be a blessing! FAR: Each year at Westwood’s Vacation Bible School, over 1300 kids, teens and adults band together to make a HUGE Kingdom impact around the world! VBS 2014 was our biggest year ever with a generosity explosion of almost $9500 that went to purchase beds for “The Bunk Bed Project” in an impoverished region of Guatemala. We are already praying about how God will use us this year! Getting to BE the church includes everybody— including kids and families! Blessings!

Child Dedications At Westwood, Child Dedications happen during regular worship services, generally on the third weekend of each month. This is a formal, special way to give thanks to God for the precious gift of a child He has bestowed upon us. All 4th & 5th graders are invited to come join us for this year’s Spring Spectacular: ‘X Marks The Spot!’ This will be an exciting evening where you will be part of a team of Treasure Hunters on an adventure to find lost treasure! This building is used each week to serve and love students. This House of God is invaded Wednesday nights, so that God can invade the hearts of 6-12th grade students. Our mission of reaching people with the love of Christ is lived out here, and students come to know God, grow in Him, and practice a faith that sticks. Wherever a student is on their faith journey, they are welcome here. Sixty-one small groups meet weekly filled with students who experience the love of Jesus. This building is also used as a launching zone to serving those around us. Students participate in Feed My Starving Children, serve in other ministry areas here at Westwood, bring meals to families needing encouragement, and serve on mission trips in the summer. We often gather here, then leave together to serve the community. This building is a place to raise up students, launch them and then upon their return hear stories of how they have served, loved and grown in the places God has sent them. Many of our college students serve in their college communities in music, small group leadership and at the local church. Some of our grads have gone on to seminary and pursued full time ministry. Some of our grads have built on the faith foundation they found at Westwood and grown to serve in other ministries where God has landed them in our country and our world.

Feed My Starving Children Wednesday, April 1, 18732 Lake Drive East (Chanhassen) - Boost, 5:45–7:30pm* - Upper Room and En Route, 7:45–9:30pm* All Student Ministry will be heading off campus to Feed My Starving Children. Boost students will be packing meals from 5:45–7:30pm, while Upper Room and En Route students will be packing meals from 7:45–9:30pm. Students are to be dropped off and picked up at FMSC in Chanhassen. This is a FREE event. Bring a friend and register online to ensure we have a spot for you! There will be no programming at Westwood on this night.

Last month, Kari Nelson (Upper Room Leader) and I had the opportunity to take nineteen, 6th-9th grade students to Ignite Discipleship Conference. Ignite is a 24 hour, overnight conference, where our students had the chance to dig deeper into their faith. The speaker, Greg Speck, focused on three main points of Connecting with God, Living for God, and Staying with God. These three messages not only spurred our students on in their own faith journey but also enabled them to grow together as a community of students. One exciting opportunity Kari and I had during the conference was to pray over our students. With their peers around them, each group of students was prayed for specifically. As leaders, Kari and I were able to speak truth about our students, calling out traits that we had seen in them. It was such an impactful memory for us, and we are praying that it was for our students as well. I am so pumped about what God is doing through Westwood Student Ministry. It has been a blessing to me to see God take hold of our students’ hearts. I am excited to see how God continues to grow and develop our students in the future.

In the age in which we live, the world wants to take everything that we have— our time, talents and money and squander it. But that was not Jesus’ call. His call on our lives was that we have life, and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) Part of Jesus’s call on our lives is to serve from the heart, and in doing so, we would be filled with the truest joy that only He can offer us. Years ago I didn’t understand this meaning of true joy. I was living a worldly lifestyle with a secular mindset…but it wasn’t working. Through a hardship, I found myself kneeling before the Lord and I offered him my steering wheel. During that time, Jesus showed me his love for me—and in turn, I offered Him my time and talents. I can’t begin to describe the unbelievable joy that radiates through me every time I serve Him on a Sunday morning. I receive the abundant life he outlined in John 10:10. And I feel it. When I give Jesus my time, I am filled up to the brim with joy, peace, and love, and I can’t help but have it spill out all around me. In those moments of serving, I feel as though I am in the presence of the Lord—and I experience heaven on earth.

Westwood’s Next Chapter: A Multisite Campus by Jennifer Ryan IN 2015, WESTWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH BEGINS OUR 21ST YEAR of ministry. We’ve grown from an infant church of hundreds in a dinner theater to a mature church where thousands attend services each week. God has done remarkable things through His body, His church. Many people have come to know Christ and are growing up in Him here. What is next for us? How do we reach more? What does God ask of us now? We’re still guided by Christ’s command to Go. Make Disciples. And God’s covenant promise with Abraham remains: All people on earth will be blessed through you. Just as Wooddale Church, in 1995, reached into a new community by planting Westwood Community Church, we will reach into new communities using the new strategy of establishing multisite locations.

This direction was first discerned in 2008 following a period of prayer and fasting by the Leadership Board. While we will continue to grow at the Chanhassen campus, multisite will allow us to take our ministry into new communities where we are already known and already have attenders living in the community.

Kimberly Wolf sums up the heart of the team, “God calls us in Acts 1:8 to be His witnesses here, near and far. We are taking the church to them.” Multisite churches reach more new believers than single location churches, even more than church plants.

A multisite church is one church meeting in multiple locations. It has one governing body, one DNA, with common vision, and one financial structure. Campuses remain as part of the sending campus long term. It is distinct from a church planting ministry, where the campus is intended to function independently long term. It is meant to compliment church plants, but not replace them.

Other benefits include releasing new leaders and volunteers into more ministry venues, increasing generosity, and an ownership and passion for outreach. Churches who have launched multisite campuses see an increase in serving and in outreach at both locations.

The multisite location will be located 15-20 minutes from the Chanhassen campus, somewhere in the northeast quadrant of the Hwy 5 and Hwy 41 intersection. If the Lord provides, it will open in February 2016. It will have an on-site pastor and will feature live worship, videocast message, and core ministries for adults and children.

Opening up a multisite campus also allows Westwood to grow in ways that are limited by our current facilities. Westwood has been blessed with rapid growth since the construction of our building in 2003. The growth trend indicates we will soon fill up the Woodside Room, which opened in 2014 to accommodate increased attendance.

Although a site has not yet been determined, the area was chosen for several reasons. Studies show that people want to attend church within a 15-minute drive from their home. The largest proportion of current Westwood attenders, leaders and volunteers are here. This particular area is also the least-churched in the Twin Cities.

The Woodside Room served as practice for a multisite campus by offering worship services complemented by live music and the streaming of the sermon message from the main worship center. Feedback has been very positive and many are choosing to make Woodside their preferred location for Sunday worship. This new site will be similar in size to the Woodside Room, with a seating capacity up to 450 people.

The new location will have a campus pastor shepherding the community and providing leadership. The process for hiring the new pastor will begin soon. The concept of having a multisite church is not new. In fact, multisite churches are mentioned in the New Testament. Corinth and other first century churches were considered multisite, meaning a number of smaller house churches were considered to be part of one city-wide church. Other area churches are successfully implementing multisite campuses across the country with 5,000,000 people worshipping each week at 8,000 multisite campuses. One of the experiential activities at LifeKeys gives participants a visual understanding of how we are all woven together as the body of Christ.

Jody Mayer always felt that God had a plan for her life. She felt confident of His plan because, she says, “He certainly went to a lot of trouble getting me off to a good start!” Her teenage mother gave her up for adoption, and she was welcomed into a loving Christian family who taught her about God and His love. She felt God’s tug on her life early on, received Christ and was baptized by the age of 12. As she grew up she was drawn to learn everything she could about God and was fascinated by stories of missionaries who visited her church. Jody’s childhood interest in missions grew into a desire to serve full time. After a year at Northwestern Bible College, she joined Youth with a Mission (YWAM). Through YWAM she received training in cross-cultural evangelism and discipleship and enjoyed hands on mission experience in Canada, Jamaica, Singapore, India and Indonesia. She helped with an outreach team at the 1984 Olympics in California. Those days of service were rich and full of adventure. After four years she returned home and landed a job in the corporate world. As a young adult, Jody found herself wandering outside of God’s plan. Even when she wasn’t actively pursuing God, however, He was pursuing her. She felt Him drawing her back to Himself and returned to her roots of faith. She renewed her pursuit of Christ and began growing through listening to weekly messages at church, enrolling in classes and Bible studies, and participating in small groups.

Jody also began serving in various ministry areas. While she enjoyed her different volunteer roles, they usually left her feeling drained and unfulfilled, a sign that she may not have been serving in the right places. That all began to change when Jody and her husband Bob enrolled in a LifeKeys class at Westwood more than three years ago. In LifeKeys, Jody learned that her spiritual gifts included hospitality, encouragement, helps and administration. She also learned that her “life gifts,” the talents and skills she was born with, included conversing and informing, teaching, listening and facilitating, being of service, and working with others. Ruth Laufenberger, the LifeKeys team lead at the time, took note of Jody’s gifts and skills and was impressed by her personal warmth and engaging spirit. “She had a way of drawing people out of themselves to talk more. She was very passionate about what she was learning and in sharing that with others,” said Ruth. Ruth invited Jody to be a table discussion leader for the next LifeKeys class, an opportunity Jody embraced wholeheartedly. Her spiritual gifts, especially of hospitality and encouragement, were perfect for her new role. Suddenly Jody felt energized through serving – she had found a great fit for her gifts and personality. Ruth noticed that Jody regularly contributed to discussions on how to improve the class with confidence and insight. Unbeknownst to Jody, Ruth had been praying for three years to find a successor for the LifeKeys team lead. As Ruth learned more

of Jody’s story, her experience in missions illustrated a spirit of bravery, courage and a sense of adventure, important qualities when taking on a new area of service. A deep faith and the ability to lean on God for help with the unknown are also essential when taking on a new role. Ruth invited Jody to pray about becoming the team lead. As Jody considered the opportunity, she realized it would stretch her to use more of her gift mix and would be a great fit. The idea of leading felt a bit intimidating at first, but she knew she would be working with an experienced team and together they would figure it all out. Jody has now served as the LifeKeys team lead for more than two years. She feels she has hit her “sweet spot” serving in an area that uses both her spiritual gifts and her life gifts, and that leaves her energized and fulfilled. As Jody has discovered her niche in service, she is passionate about helping others discover their unique fit too. Watching the light go on in someone else as they discover how God has wired them is exciting. Jody is definitely igniting the world around her by using her unique gifts for God’s glory and by helping others do the same.

Internship Program in Malawi Westwood has partnered with World Relief for years in Malawi. Here, near and far. Acts 1:8 has been the Westwood Outreach goal from day one. And sometimes the here, near and the far combine in a wonderful way. Take the Westwood Annual Food Pack for instance. This event was a wonderful way for Westwood families to pack and then pray for the food as it went out to bless the most vulnerable of the world. Here are a few more examples of what Westwood is doing here, near and far: Here. Westwood is converting the Hope House (the family residence on our campus) into a place for homeless teens to find temporary housing. The projected opening date is November 2015. Near. Westwood partners with a shelter for battered women. In fact, we are working on a feasibility study that might enable a branch of this ministry in the Southwest Metro. And through our Justice Team, Westwood is reaching out to organizations in the area who are seeking to end trafficking. Far. Westwood has excelled at reaching far places for years. Our church is in a unique position to go to the far reaches of the world and assist ministries and local churches as they minister to the most vulnerable. Whether it is in Malawi, Thailand, Nicaragua, Kyrgyzstan, Rwanda, China, or Jordan, Westwood is partnering with local churches to have significant impact in the spiritual, physical and economic development of people in these countries.

During my 19 years at Westwood, I’ve experienced God working in amazing ways to make known his presence to people in everyday life. I’ve been with those who’ve relied upon God’s forgiving grace to mend broken relationships and renew their love for one another. I’ve witnessed individuals discover freedom from addictions and the darkness of depression, as they’ve surrendered to Christ and engaged in support. I’ve celebrated with young parents the dedication of their children, as they’ve offered themselves and their little ones to our heavenly Father. I’ve grieved with spouses and parents who’ve wrestled intensely with the death of loved ones; and in their grief have experienced the comfort and hope of Him who raises the dead. I’ve been inspired by the people of Westwood, as they’ve reached out in simple and profound ways to listen, offer comfort, provide meals, pray with, and respond with practical help to the concerns of others - serving and caring for one another with the love of Jesus. As I engage in the everyday lives of the people of Westwood and witness them relying upon Christ for whatever grace is needed, my own trust in Christ and love for the church called Westwood deepens. May God’s presence among the people of Westwood increase and be a source of immeasurable blessing to countless others...here, near and far!

Classes Acts 1:8 has always been a meaningful reminder of many things concerning life with God. We receive power. The Holy Spirit is within us. We are Jesus’ witnesses. Here. There. Everywhere. Worship Arts Lent Services Wednesdays, through March 25, 6:00–6:30pm, Worship Center The Art of Forgiving 3/4–Why we forgive? 3/11–Whom we forgive? 3/18–How we forgive? (Part 1) 3/25–How we forgive? (Part 2) Lent commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent out in the wilderness before his ministry began and invites us to contemplate our own Christian journey and the vitality of our faith. We will gather each Wednesday in Lent for worship and a devotional message that allows us to reflect on and revitalize our love for Jesus Christ.

Maundy Thursday Service Thursday, April 2, 6:00 and 7:30pm, Worship Center We will remember the last supper experience by observing communion together, as well as focus on the suffering and death of Jesus. The services in the Worship Center will be relayed by video to the Woodside room. Full children’s programming for birth–grade 5 will be available. Please arrive early to this service; those arriving after the service begins will be seated by the ushers.

Sing with Sara Renner on April 26 Wednesdays, April 8, 15 & 22, 6:30–8:20pm* Worship Center Local Christian recording artist Sara Renner will be leading worship with our Choir and Orchestra during the morning services on Sunday, April 26. If you enjoy singing or playing an instrument, join us for this one Sunday commitment. Choir and Orchestra are both open to those 16 and older by audition. We will meet three Wednesday nights from 6:30–8:20pm in April to prepare for Sunday, April 26. We request you attend all three rehearsals.

The Lord has been so faithful to this community for the last twenty years, and I’m excited to be a part of the years ahead! It is such a blessing to be a part of this story with such passionate followers of Christ. This past weekend during Elements, something powerful happened during worship; a completely unique and God-orchestrated moment. It felt like the Lord turned on the “Holy Spirit valve” and was moving in full force. Our prayer was that God would meet us and have His way during the service, and the beauty of His faithfulness is that He showed up and moved in the way that only He could. Friends, the Lord is doing something mighty here at Westwood, and we’ve only begun to see the tip of the iceberg! Our prayer is that we can begin to fully revel in all that the Lord has for this community as worshipers and that His will would continue to be done in this great place! In the coming weeks we will be introducing a few songs that are filled with the proclamation of His love and the freedom that comes with it. Be on the lookout for You Came To My Rescue, by Christy Nockels and Ever Be by Bethel Music. I’m excited to see how the Lord uses these songs here at Westwood!

Groups/Studies Bible Study: Lamplighters Lamplighters Bible study groups offer several opportunities to study Scripture, make new friends, grow spiritually, and learn how to be a disciple for Christ.

Lamplighters Men’s Groups Last month our small groups ministry team tried something brand new—you may have heard about it. It was called Group Connect. Over two consecutive Monday nights, 90 people met together to ‘kick the tires’ of being in a small group. We placed people around tables with others that would be a small group for them to meet with for the next 8 weeks. Personally, I had no idea what to expect in terms of how many groups would actually launch from the pad of Group Connect. We had 12 groups total in the room for both of these nights, and 11 of the 12 launched and are meeting together as a group as you read this page! The only group that didn’t start had half of its members leaving for the south for two months to get out of this cold state. This is awesome! I write overjoyed and grateful. God is on the move here in groups, and there is no time like right now to give one a shot. There are new groups starting all the time. Stop out at the table by the café or our in the commons in building B to see a listing of groups to get into. Or—as always—give me a call personally, I’d be glad to help you to connect with a group that fits you.

Hype is a super fun camp filled with field games, waterfront time, free time, crafts, climbing wall, zip line, and so much more. It’s a time of faith infusion and friendship building. Each morning we’ll spend time worshiping through song, hearing a testimony, participating in solo devotions, and engaging in cabin conversation. In the evening, we have Club where we’ll listen to a message that’s relevant to middle school students and then enjoy cabin time conversation. Hype is hosted at Wood Lake Bible Camp, less than 2 hours from Westwood. Meet new friends and be challenged to grow in your faith at Hype.

Situated on beautiful Green Lake in Wisconsin, Unite is a unique summer experience for our students entering 9th grade (Fall 2015). We will experience fun, deep worship, biblical teaching, phenomenal games, and free time activities for everyone. We will have lots of fun in the sun with activity options including banana boat tubing, archery, tie dye, ultimate Frisbee, beach time, crafts, kayaking, and many other fun activities. Come join us as we build strong friendships and lay the foundation for the Upper Room experience we will share in the fall!

Silver Cliff Ranch is set outside of Buena Vista at the foot of the Collegiate Peaks. On-site activities include a high ropes challenge course, hiking, swimming in a pool heated by a natural hot spring, and a game room complete with foosball, pool and ping pong tables. Rafting with Noah’s Ark is always a highlight of the week. Throughout the week, students and leaders will be challenged by inspiring talks, uplifting worship, small group discussions, and experiences that compel us to grow together in Christ. This week promises to be fun, lifechanging, and filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

This summer we will spend a week in Green Bay, Wisconsin, serving people in tangible ways. Some acts of service might include serving in a soup kitchen, playing with children, visiting the elderly or a homeless shelter, and sorting at a thrift store. All the while, we will practice being the hands and feet of Jesus. Each day we will begin with devotions and end the day in Club with music and a message that’s relevant to middle school students.

The vibrant city of Cincinnati is located amidst the rolling hills and bluffs of the Ohio River Valley. Despite its progressive economic development, Cincinnati’s diverse population faces numerous challenges such as poverty and racism that date back to Cincinnati’s major role as part of the Underground Railroad. Together we will be a blessing to a Cincinnati neighborhood in the name of Jesus.
