Current Message Series: Soulidify What is God’s will for my life? We all want to know the answer to that question, right? What does He want us to do with this life He’s given? We tend to raise the question about God’s will for our lives when we have to make a big decision like, “Should I take this job?” or “Is this the person I should marry? etc. But such a view makes it feel like God is playing a game with us to discover His will while He sits back in heaven saying “you’re getting warmer, warmer, you’re hot,

hotter, you’re burning up! Aww, now you’er cold, ice cold…” What if searching for God’s will like this actually misses the entire point of what it means to be a Christ-follower? What does God want us to do with this life he’s given? Soulidify is a teaching series that reveals God’s certain and unmistakable will in five areas of life so that you and I would know Him more deeply as we trust Him more completely day by day and moment by moment.

Story behind the photo As I was driving out of the Westwood parking lot on an unusually foggy winter day, I noticed that the fog had condensed on the apple trees, decorating each tiny apple with a droplet of water. I am fascinated with the challenge of using my camera to capture the secret upside down images that are reflected in droplets of water, so I parked my car and took pictures. After downloading them, I was delighted to see that the droplet at the bottom of each apple held an upside down view of the branches around it. I marvel at the wonders of God’s creation–great and small!– Ruth

Say “HELLO!” to Stanton Petersen, our newest Children’s Associate joining the Elementary Team. Simply put, Stanton “gets” kids and families. He is all about helping kids to discover who they are in Christ and is passionate about families becoming stronger in their faith. Parents themselves to two little ones, Kingston and Myla, Stanton and his wife Rebecca know the vulnerabilities that come along with parenthood and he wants moms and dads to feel empowered to be their special kid’s spiritual hero. Stanton and Rebecca are missionaries, and together, they birthed KinderRoots, the children’s branch of the international SHINE IN THE WORLD MINISTRIES, led by Dr. Sammy Wanyonyi. The mission of KinderRoots is to “root” kids in Christ, along with their vision that every child would hear the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Stanton is well known in Westwood circles as a ministry partner, as well as being a longtime member of the teaching teams for both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Stanton has a rich and extensive hands-on background working in children’s ministry in his native Cape Town, South Africa, and has trained thousands of children’s ministry workers across Africa and even locally in the Twin Cities through KinderRoots. Stanton completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Ministry from Crown College. We are thrilled that Stanton brings his deep passion for seeing kids and families love and connect with Christ, one another, and the world around them, which is our collective Children’s Team BIG WIN statement–he fits right in!

Child Dedication Orientation Class Sunday, November 23, 9:45am Prairie Room Babies bring so much joy to the life of a family and, whether through birth or adoption, the arrival of a little one is certainly cause to celebrate! Here at Westwood, we love to take the opportunity in Worship Services to welcome, pray for and offer thanks to God for the life of a child through Child Dedication. Parents who are dedicating children for the first time at Westwood are strongly encouraged to attend this one-time informational class held monthly that helps explain what Child Dedication is in our setting. Dave is Director of Instructional Technology & Media Services at Minnetonka Public Schools, and a dad of four. Dave will address cyber-bullying, harassment, computer hacking and other possible dangers within technology. He will offer up sound strategies for helping us to manage our personal information while online , with special awareness of the permanency of our digital record when using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat and more. Students Sundays Xchange (grades 6–8) Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm Room A112 Welcome to Student Ministry! We host Wednesday night programming for all students in grades 6–12 during the school year. Additionally, there is Sunday morning programming for students in grades 6–8 which meets all year long. New students and friends join us every week so invite a friend today. Weekly, we seek to give students a place to connect with one another, a caring adult and God. Large group messages encourage students to take the next step of faith, no matter where they are today. Then, through engaging small group conversation, they learn to blend faith and life together, growing in their faith and convictions in Christ. Catalyst Westwood’s Catalyst Ministry is a place for adults in their 20s and 30s in all stages of life–married, single, with kids–to connect with one another, grow in their relationship with God, and to assimilate into the greater church. Teleios exists to help people become well, wise, and whole in the second half of life. I believe the best way to become well, wise, and whole is through discovering life over-flowing that is promised in these words from Jesus Christ. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly,” or over flowing (John 10:10). If it is possible to live life abundantly or live a life that is over flowing, then I want to experience living that kind of life. The second half of life positions us well to live life abundantly because we are living longer, we are looking for a life of meaning, significance and purpose, and we have the time, treasure and talent to invest in things that are eternal. Let’s make the choice to thrive, not just survive, in the second half of our lives.

That’s Not Fair! by Chaz Nichols, Director of Missions & Adult Ministries

“THAT’S NOT FAIR!” IS AN ALL TOO FAMILIAR declaration heard by most parents of young children. From their earliest stages of development, children have an innate sense of right and wrong, of what is fair…and unfair. As children get older, our advice to them in the area of injustice is often to exhort them to understand that the world is not fair, and to get used to it, it’s just a way of life. But, as we relive uncalled for adversity in our own lives–being laid off, the untimely passing of a loved one, or a debilitating illness–silently we too cry, “That’s not fair!” If we can understand how unfair and unjust life can be at times in our world of relative ease, imagine what life must be like for millions of people living all over the world whose lives are defined by ongoing, crushing injustice they are powerless to change. They long to have someone join them in proclaiming: “That’s not fair!” and to seek justice on their behalf. Why Seeking Justice Matters Injustice, or exploitation, is taking from another the things God has intended for them to have dominion over: • An estimated 29.8 million people are held in slavery today– more than at the height of the slave traffic in the 18th Century Child slavery in the fishing industry in Ghana is • 26% of all forced labor victims are children especially brutal and ingrained into society. • Nearly two million children are held captive in the commercial sex trade • Land and home grabbing from orphans and widows is rampant in many parts of the world–leaving them vulnerable, without representation and without means Justice, on the other hand, is “the act of righting the wrongs that sin creates.” At the heart of justice is the Lord Himself…seeking justice for others is His desire for our lives. Consider Isaiah 1:17: “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.” Another view into God’s heart in the area of justice is Jeremiah 9:24: “I am the LORD who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and I delight in these things…” Seeking Justice at Westwood This November, Westwood is launching a long-term initiative to understand and confront the injustices of the world around us. From the heart of Africa to our own backyards in the Southwest Metro, people are unjustly treated every day. We can become aware of the injustices around us and ask God what part is ours to play in defending what is right and just. Pastor Joel will begin 2015 with a message series on biblical justice to increase our understanding. When faced with the overwhelming scope of the issues it is easy to wonder what one, or just a few people, can do. In Philippians 4:13, Paul reminds us that “we can do all things through Christ.” We just need to start–He will do the rest. An old African saying speaks to anyone who feels too insignificant to make a lasting change in the world: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you’ve never spent the night with a mosquito.”

Come experience the hope of Christ to comfort and strengthen you this Christmas season. The gathering includes worship, stories, God’s promise, prayer, and lighting candles of hope. Together, we will encourage one another in response to various losses including; the death of a loved one or friend, loss of a job, ending of a marriage or other significant changes experienced in a relationship. If your heart is heavy, come. A light supper to follow.

GIST The Essence of Raising Life-Ready Kids

THE WORD “GIST” IS DEFINED AS THE ESSENTIAL POINT or meaning of something. Co-authors Timothy Johanson and Michael Anderson, chose the title “GIST – The Essence of Raising Life-Ready Kids” for their recently-released parenting book, citing that “…it means the bottom line, the truth, or the inner workings of something...when we want someone to know the way something really works.” Their purpose with this insightful work is to help parents prepare their Westwood will be hosting a children to be life-ready kids so that they, in turn, can six-week series, “GIST–The become life-ready adults.

Essence of Raising LifeReady Kids,” beginning Thursdays, January 8– February 12, 7:00–8:30pm. Taught by the authors, this series will provide practical, understandable tools for parents to help prepare kids for real life challenges.

Michael is a Licensed Psychologist who has spent 30 years studying the way kids grow up. He has been described as having “an inquisitive nature and unusual perspectives that have resulted in insights that are refreshing, thought-provoking and unique.” Michael shares life with wife, Carolyn and their

The authors bring much to the table by way of experience, both professionally with their patients, and as dads who have navigated the journey that is parenting, complete with all the joys and pitfalls that can come with the territory. Published in December 2013, “GIST” has garnered quick and wide attention as being, not only a stand-out among parenting books, but also as a helpful resource for anyone working with children, teens and young adults. “GIST” offers up insights into why kids behave in certain ways and provides pratical tools for developing healthy self-esteem, resilience, accurate self-assessment and other foundational concepts needed to become ready for life. Tim and Michael are regular contributors on FOX 9 News and have been busy speaking all across the country using “GIST” as their platform. Although they wrote it as a secular book, Tim and Mike have also been able to combine it with their own faith as Christ-followers as they speak to audiences in many faith-communities. One recent development the authors find particularly exciting is an upcoming partnership with Focus On the Family, the Colorado-based non-profit organization centered around building strong marriages and families. Tim enthusiastically explained, “’GIST’ is the first secular book Focus On the Family has ever endorsed!”

I thank God for family and friends who love so well. The way they love is a reflection of the love of Christ, alive within and through them. I remember my mom and dad both of whom have died and are at home with Jesus. They were faithful to one another for 50 years. And the last 10 years of life together, their love for God and each other grew immensely. Also, I remember my nephew, Garrison, a young Army Officer, a Screaming Eagle with the 101st, who sacrificed so much to protect our nation and to serve the local villagers in Iraq. Words cannot express my gratitude! The love of God, which I’ve experienced through countless people, is cause for remembrance and thanks. And I’m certain there are loved ones in your life that, when you remember them, your heart wells up with thanksgiving. So, this month…thank a military veteran. Write a few lines to a friend who is always there for you. Thank God for the blessing of family who simply and consistently love you. In the words of the apostle Paul, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” Also, I invite you to attend The Gathering of Hope, a service to remember loved ones and to give thanks for the resurrection hope of Jesus Christ.

“Look among the nations and see, wonder and be astounded, for I am doing a work in your day you would not believe if told.” Habakkuk 1:5 The fall season is in full swing and God is working all around us…and it is not hard to be in awe…or astounded, as Habakkuk says. In every activity done at Westwood the hope, our prayer, is the event would draw people closer to God…leading them to become devoted followers of Jesus. A key event coming up immediately the biblical justice seminar. This opportunity is timely and important in understanding our roles as Christians in the world today. Look for more information in Volume One…and on the Westwood website. The prison ministry also continues to flourish and see fruit from their ministry. Recently one of our Westwood prison team members was at a ministry event in Arden Hills and a woman attending the conference introduced herself – saying she had been blessed and grew in her faith, as an inmate at Shakopee, by the Westwood Prison Team’s ministry. On Monday night, November 17, the Central African team will host a dinner for our World Relief country manager from Malawi, Gibson Nkanaunena. We will reflect on what we accomplished this summer in Malawi and envision what we will be doing this summer as we return to Malawi for further ministry. “Look among the nations and see…” God is doing amazing things in and through Westwood. Thai Mission Trip January 22–31, 2015 This coming January there will be a ministry trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Numerous missionaries will be gathered in that town for a Pioneers Regional Retreat. The purpose of this ministry trip is to serve the missionaries by caring for their children as they attend the conference. Some additional highlights of the trip are to learn about the culture of Thailand by visiting important sites around Chiang Mai. The cost of the trip is $2,700. Each participant will pay that amount from a combination of both personal funds and their own fundraising efforts. I am so excited for Westwood’s Choir and Orchestra Christmas Concert this year with special guest Sara Groves. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of joining Sara on several tours, as have a few other members of our worship team as well. I can’t say enough about Sara’s talent as a songwriter and her grace as a communicator. Her music has no doubt left an indelible mark on me personally. I know I’m not alone in this, as God has used her to move many, bringing listeners to the heart of the moment through her songs, and to heart of the season when it comes to Christmas. I’m so proud and inspired as well by our own Choir and Orchestra! They’ve invested a great deal of time, energy and heart into bringing this year’s music to life. I hope you can join us this year.
