VERSE FOR THE YEAR 2015 Historically, Micah 6:8 has served as one of the most celebrated verses in scripture. Micah 6:8 has become the core text deployed by the church as a rallying cry for justice and advocacy. However, the context requires deep introspection. It calls us into a place of self-reflection and repentance in terms of how we live for God and how we serve the best interests of others. We are aligned with the people of Israel who, because of her sin, are separated from God and are therefore unable to see and recognize God’s true character and desire for our lives. God did not want blood sacrifices. He did not and does not need our material sacrifices. There is only one sacrifice that the Lord truly desires from us. God requires a change of heart, a change of lifestyle and disposition toward both God and neighbor. God, our Father, offers us a simple proposition: Follow me beyond where you can control; beyond what your own strength and competencies can take you, and beyond what is affirmed or risked by the crowd – and you will experience me and my power and my wisdom and my love. Join us for THE JUST CHURCH message series beginning January 11, 2015.

Kids Birth/Adoption Announcements We love celebrating the birth and adoption of kids at Westwood. To share your joyous news in Volume One, please contact Jane. Contact: Jane Pears, 952.224.7425, jane.pears@westwoodcc.org

2015–a new year–a fresh start so filled with promise and the potential of things to come or that could be! Sounds a bit like the life of a child, doesn’t it–where there is nothing set in stone yet, a script yet to be written. I think that’s why I love what I do so very much. Working with kids and families, and those who serve them, feels like there is so much ahead to be explored and experienced, and I just want to drink it all in! A new year is also like getting a 365-day do-over! We get the chance to try to correct old habits, and to forge new and healthier ones. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds of that new big bucket of mercy that God has provided for each of us: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” I would like to think that God wouldn’t mind if we inserted the word, “year” in place of “morning.” His mercies can extend to a new year of drawing closer to Him than ever before; learning that “to know better is to do better,” and then applying that to every area of our lives, including in our relationships with our kids. One great way to do that in the coming year is to grab a copy of “HomeFront” each month to enjoy together–it’s jam-packed with inspiration and support as we seek to spiritually raise our kids! It is our gift to you each and every month of the year. My prayer for 2015 is for all of us to seek the Lord’s greatest purpose for our lives, to grow in our love for Him, and then to serve out of that awesome reality. Peace,

Danise McMillen Director of Children’s Ministry 952-224-7342 danise.mcmillen@westwoodcc.org

Students Sundays Xchange (grades 6–8) Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm Room A112 Small group leaders are a vital part of our student ministry. With their commitment to students weekly, our students thrive in small group conversation. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, are all ages, have different life stories but they all have in common a desire for students to know God. They pray for students during the week and pray with students on Wednesday nights. Our leaders connect beyond Wednesday nights encouraging students in their faith by sending verses, asking for prayer requests and checking in. Small group leaders are faith examples to our students and want them to grow in their understanding and love for Jesus. Just last night, a leader shared her faith story. In small group, a student shared that her story encouraged her to keep trusting in God. Another student leader shared with me that his leader always knows when he’s not there and sends a text. A high school student leader attended a sibling’s school concert and saw several students from her small group there, too. In the trenches, serving God by loving students, our leaders shepherd, love and model faith to our students. We are so thankful for how they have heard the call of God on their heart to serve Him this way! God is at work in student ministry and our leaders have a front row seat to the life-change in our students.

We worship together, participate in discussion groups with caring adult leaders, play games and mixers to get moving, and hear a message related to middle school students. Each week we’ll discuss a question to help students consider their faith now and for the future. Students, bring your Bibles! Contact: Pam Schwarz, 952.224.7362, pam.schwarz@westwoodcc.org

Welcome to student ministry! I am in charge of programming for the high school students in grades 10-12. Throughout the year we meet regularly on Wednesday nights for a time of large group gathering and then break off into small groups for deeper conversations about God and life. En Route is a place where I want students to come and belong. I want students to feel like this time together is where they can take down their guard and bring the good and the bad of life into a safe place. We have adult volunteers who know the value of community with God and with others and want to invest all that they have received from God into these students. You have probably heard Pastor Joel say a few times, with open hands we receive all that God has for us knowing he has a lot to give and with open hands we give away, knowing we can never out give God. This is my desire for leaders and students. I want students to understand and experience God’s love in new and exciting ways through worship, message, and community because I know the love of God is greater than anything else they could ever experience.

As the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays of 2014 fade into happy memories, I find myself ready to embrace the gift of another new year. For me it’s a time for life review and an opportunity to ask some big picture questions. How am I doing? Where am I going? What am I dreaming? Who am I becoming? Over the past year I have found myself saying this statement at many of our Teleios gatherings, “we are ever in the process of becoming that which we give ourselves to in the present moment”. I am learning that life is lived only in the moment, I am not entitled to a future, and I can’t change what’s past, so I need to make each moment of my life all that it has the potential of being. Christ said that He came that “we might have life, and have it in an overflowing way”. If this is true, and I believe it is, then this New Year I want to experience “life overflowing” in every moment, and I want to help as many people as possible come to experience it as well. Where am I going?...where ever I can experience “life overflowing”. What am I dreaming?...to be well, wise and whole so that I am fit to serve God. Who am I becoming?...the person God created me to be. Let’s give ourselves to those things that will accomplish these ends in our lives in 2015.

Be courageous!

Begin the New Year by expressing your love for Jesus Christ in baptism.

JESUS SET FOR US THE EXAMPLE OF OFFERING OUR LIVES to God through baptism. And the early church flourished, as the followers of Christ did the same, testifying to power of the Risen Christ to transform their lives. As we’ll discover through the February teaching series entitled, Connecting the Dots, whenever and wherever people have expressed their love for Jesus Christ through the humble act of baptism, lives have been changed by the grace of God and the church has grown! In the same way, we are invited to be bold in our love for Christ. To be blessed, humbly identifying ourselves as followers of Christ. To be baptized so that others may see and hear the joy of living for Jesus! We’re making it easy for you to connect the dots… Baptisms will be part of each of the worship services beginning Sunday, February 1–March 1. (Indoors, of course! Not at the lake like Westwood’s summer and fall baptisms. Rather, we’ll set up a warm baptism pool for your comfort.) So, make bold the connection between the love of Christ and living your life for him. Respond to God’s prompting. Be baptized in February! To do so, please contact Kim Hanson. Westwood Preschool

10

CELEBRATING A DECADE OF LEARNING by Jennifer Ryan

Westwood Preschool is a faith-based preschool for children ages 3-5 that is part of Westwood Community Church’s efforts to serve both the congregation and the community. This outreach has been effective. About half of the preschool’s annual 150 students come from outside Westwood families. The preschool just received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC is the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. The accreditation recognizes a commitment to reaching the highest professional standards in the field. The growth the preschool has experienced has been nothing short of amazing. When Westwood Preschool opened its doors on January 4, 2005 they offered three classes. Currently there are six classrooms with program options of 2, 3, or 4 times per week. A full-day pre-K class was piloted in 2012. Their purpose is to provide opportunities for children to grow physically, relationally, Jesus said, “Let the little children cognitively, and spiritually through their caring staff and well-designed programs. They also seek to nurture children’s experience of God’s love and grace by teaching and modeling come to me, and do not hinder Christian values.

them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” -Matthew 19:14. This is exactly what Westwood Preschool has done for the last ten years. In fact, over 1,460 children have come to learn about Jesus here! 12

Preschool Director Kristi Swier says their ultimate goal is to help children‚ “get the love thing right, by teaching them to first love God.” She gives all the glory to the success of the preschool to God. “We are so blessed to have this space, resources, and the collaborative efforts of every ministry in the church. The quality of our program is elevated through all of this support, and we are grateful for God’s grace and provision each day,”she says. “We put faith and joy in all we do. And we have a lot of fun!”

10 years of providing opportunities for children to grow physically, relationally, cognitively, and spiritually!

Lori Juelich, a Lead Teacher who has been on staff since 2006 agrees. “My favorite part of going to work is getting on the floor and playing. We know how much fun learning through play is.” The staff believes that learning should be play-based, and they also teach children to think independently. Recently the kids were asked to guess what happens to a candy cane when it is put in warm water. Teacher Lisa Thomas recalls one student’s prediction was that it would turn into an octopus. One of the teachers on staff, Debi Forsyth, has worked at the preschool since it opened its doors ten year ago. Consistent and quality teachers help make the program as strong as it is. Students benefit from using the fruits of the spirit as a foundation for their weekly chapel gatherings. Children grow in faith through Bible stories, music and movement, puppet skits, prayer, and teachable moments. Seeing the young children put their faith in action has been inspiring. Families who had no church home have started attending Westwood after hearing of their child’s experiences in preschool. Children will often suggest praying for friends who are out sick that day. Families have begun praying before meals at home because their preschooler started leading it. An added perk of the preschool, especially in the cold of winter, is curbside drop off. It is estimated the staff has done carline over 5,000 times, in all kinds of weather, and always with smiles on their faces.

For more information on the preschool, please visit the website: www.westwoodpreschool.org or call Kristi Swier, Director of Preschool Ministry at 952.224.7426. or Becky Steffensen, Assitant Director at 952.224.7452.

Rock the Boat

IT WAS THE SINGLE HARDEST ASSIGNMENT that the Senior Investigator from International Justice Mission (IJM) had experienced in his 30-year career. For many years, he had led IJM teams into dark and dangerous places to rescue children and adults suffering violence. When he went with IJM to investigate child slavery in the West African nation of Ghana last year, he was wholly unprepared for what he saw: children suffering everywhere, with no one to protect them. They were on Lake Volta, the world’s largest man-made lake, where an estimated 50,000 children (some as young as four) work on fishing boats during peak season. Experts in Ghana agreed that many of these children are slaves, but no one knows quite how many. This IJM team went to confirm the scale of the problem and to determine what IJM could do to help. The boat masters told the IJM investigators how they operate: they go to remote villages and buy young boys, because the youngest are easiest to control. One man personally showed them six boys available for sale at $150 each. The slave owners convince families that their boys will be educated and receive work. But these children are not paid, educated or cared for. They are trapped and forced to work as slaves.

as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the IJM team on the ground in Ghana to fight against slavery. How will we rock the boat? The work of justice begins with prayer, so our first priority is to stay on top of what is going on there through regular emails and conference calls with our key IJM liaisons. We are able to pray specifically for the changing needs of the new team. Right now, we are praying for them as they fill their job openings with the best qualified candidates, obtain the proper work and residency permits, and learn to work as an effective team. Second, we are supporting this IJM team’s efforts financially. We will give $10,000 in 2015 and will consider future financial support as we evaluate results. IJM’s goals for this year, for instance, are to rescue 40 boys (victims), arrest 10 suspects, and charge 9 of these suspects. Rescue is always IJM’s first priority, but lasting change comes about when perpetrators are held accountable for their actions and brought to justice. Finally, Westwood’s Justice Ministry Team seeks to deepen and embrace our own understanding of God’s call to us as Christians to act. God hates injustice, He hates suffering, and the Church is His plan to protect innocent children and others suffering at the hands of evil humans. We are His Plan A—and there is no Plan B!

These young slaves wore dirty and ragged clothing, or no clothing at all. Most of these boys had distended stomachs, skin diseases, and open sores and wounds. Some were openly crying as the IJM team approached. Others looked completely exhausted and their eyes were vacant of emotion.

Next steps: • Pastor Joel is speaking on Justice throughout the month of January.

The slave owners worked them tirelessly, giving them very little food, clothing or rest. Even the smallest children were forced to dive into the depths of the lake to untangle nets, many drowning as a result.

• Consider attending a ½ day workshop on Biblical Justice Advocacy on January 31 here at Westwood. World Vision will conduct this world-class workshop so we can learn how to effectively act and advocate for justice, both locally and internationally.

Because of this investigation, IJM recently opened a new field office in Ghana to rescue children from slavery in the fishing industry. They are working with local law enforcement on plans for complex rescues of the boys and safe aftercare to help these children heal. They are also working on prosecuting the oppressive boat masters who think they can continue to act with impunity. Westwood Church has the incredible privilege of working with IJM in this new venture. Westwood’s recently formed Justice Ministry Team has selected IJM’s Ghana office as one of our key partnerships for 2015 and beyond. We are calling this partnership project “Rock the Boat!”,

Thai Mission Trip

Happy New Year from all of the great ministry teams and staff in Outreach.

January 22–31, 2015

January will be an impactful month for Westwood in the area of Outreach. Programs and Sunday messages will be focused on our learning what God’s heart is in the area of righting injustices in the world. And then to move, both personally and as a church, beyond understanding God’s heart to finding ways Westwood can actually “do” justice in the world.

The Westwood ministry trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand is close to leaving. Numerous missionaries will be gathered in that northern Thai town for a Pioneers Regional Retreat. The purpose of this ministry trip is to serve the missionaries by caring for their children as they attend the conference. Some additional highlights of the trip are to learn about the culture of Thailand by visiting important sites around Chiang Mai. Each participant has been busy raising support from a combination of both personal funds and fundraising efforts. For more information about the trip or to know how to give on-line to help support this trip, please contact Mindy Conradi. Contact: Mindy Conradi, 612.309.1994, mindydc10@aol.com

Internship Program in Malawi Westwood has partnered with World Relief for years in Malawi. Westwood teams have made numerous trips to the northern province of Chitipa–bringing spiritual encouragement to both pastors and lay people. As a further deepening of the partnership, Westwood and World Relief are announcing an internship program in Chitipa, Malawi to begin in June 2015. A three to six-month assignment, this is a wonderful opportunity for university students or active retired folks.

And God is very clear regarding injustices. There are hundreds of scriptures on this subject in the Bible, we will study many of them during January, but none is more clear that Isaiah 61:8: “I, the Lord, love justice! But I hate robbery and injustice.” If God loves justice and hates injustice, what does that mean for us as a church…and us as a disciple of Christ? And if James encourages us to be doers of the Word and not only hearers–then what should we be about doing in this area? These and many other questions will be addressed during our January sermon series. But there are a few other opportunities for learning about this subject that I want to call your attention to and strongly encourage you to: •

Recently, I heard a former Navy Seal describe his experience of freezing up amidst a particularly dangerous training mission. He was 300 feet in the air, tethered to the face of a sheer cliff by a thin rope, and instantly paralyzed by fear. He could not bring himself to release his grip and reach for the next hold. Eventually, an instructor descended alongside him and gave him this simple encouragement. “Don’t look down. Focus on what’s within 3 feet of you. And find the next hold.” With renewed focus on what was within his 3-foot-world, the Navy Seal was able to move forward and complete the exercise. It’s a helpful reminder of how to respond to changes, challenges, and tight places in life. Remain present to God and others within my 3-foot-world. Release my grip on whatever it is I may be clinging to. Reach out and trust that God and others are present to listen, support, and to guide. It’s never easy. It takes courage, support, and the grace of God. This January I’d invite you to reach out and take a next step to be part of one of Westwood’s support group settings. You’ll find in this edition of Volume One descriptions of various groups that address personal and relational growth. It’s my prayer that, together, we will experience the sufficiency of God’s grace and the support of others to find that next foothold.

Classes Alpha Tuesdays, January 13–March 31, 6:00–9:00pm* Room A111

Classes “It must be really meaningful for you at the end of the day to know that you did something meaningful in this world.” I did not have a response for my friend who said this in reference to her job in a large corporate setting–but I knew that something was wrong. Her work mattered too! It mattered to God and it made a difference in this world. Fact is, every one of us has a calling–God gives it to us and we get to respond to it. The primary place that we exercise that calling is in our everyday work. Whatever your answer is to the question, “What do you do for work?”, God’s desire is the same for each of us: That we would work to the best of our ability, partnered with Him, to help this world to flourish. Our ability to embrace and apply God’s call for our lives in our everyday work is of utmost importance. For six weeks, we are doing a class that will help you in this endeavor. It’s called “Faith and Work: Exploring God’s Call for Our Lives.” You can find more details on this page. Your work matters to God and it makes a difference in this world. Carve our time this winter to grow in your own personal conviction of this dynamic truth. It will improve your work-life and it will help position you for greater impact in this world!

Do you sometimes wish you could stop the pastor and ask a question? Do you want to learn the best way to read your Bible? Do you know if God hears your prayers? Do you wonder why God allows suffering? Alpha is an opportunity to explore these and many other subjects in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course is 12 weeks, meeting once per week on Tuesdays and one amazing Saturday. In each session people enjoy great food, laughter, and learning. No question about life or God is seen as too simple...questions like “Why am I here?...Am I going to heaven? So if you are going through some tough times and are questioning your faith, if you’ve been in the church for years but still feel like a babe in Christ, if your faith has hit a plateau, or if you are simply struggling with the idea of Christianity, then come to Alpha. Cost: $17 for materials. A donation of $5 per dinner is appreciated. Contact: Kim Martinek, 612.532.7937, kimmartinek@yahoo.com

Essentials: A Deep Dive Into the Core Beliefs of the Christian Faith Tuesdays, January 20–March 10, 7:00–9:00pm* Room B100 Essentials discusses the central beliefs and doctrines of Christian faith in depth. If you would like to increase your knowledge of what we believe as Christians and learn how to dialogue with people who may not believe the same thing, this is a course for you. Essentials is also a great next step if you have taken the Alpha or LifeKeys classes. We will cover topics like the inspiration of Scripture, the Trinity, salvation, the Church and more. As we discuss these topics around tables, we will learn together by teachings from Westwood’s pastors, Joel Johnson, Brian Suter, Laura Gilbertson and Dave Trautmann. Faith and Work: Exploring God’s Call for our Lives Tuesdays, January 13–February 17, 7:00–8:30pm* Room A112 The Bible is clear. God designed each of us for His purposes and planned work for us. The Bible is also clear that this work is done within the context of our everyday lives, doing everyday things. This six week course has three components, as it: 1) Explores biblical principles regarding our work 2) Provides tools for self-exploration of personality, strengths, interests and motivations and spiritual gifts 3) Helps us integrate exploration and understanding into a spiritual growth action plan so that we can be better stewards of our vocational uniqueness. Successful Results Through Sabbath Rest Sunday, January 25 and February 1, 9:45–10:45am* Room A206 How can we influence and lead best through Sabbath? Results and rest may seem contradictory rather than complimentary. At the same time, we need to seek God’s desire for Sabbath and how it actually enhances our influence and leadership ability. This course is a great next step to practically apply our January sermon series on what it means to walk humbly, love mercy and act justly. Join others in this two session course experience provided by Westwood’s Wellspring Ministry to leaders as Jeanine Parolini guides discussion on the importance of Sabbath rest in ministry, at home and at work. Groups/Studies Bible Study: Lamplighters Lamplighters Bible study groups offer several opportunities to study Scripture, make new friends, grow spiritually, and learn how to be a disciple for Christ.

Lamplighters Men’s Groups For me it has always been easy to embrace the mantra, “Life is better connected to others,” especially when it comes to faith in Christ. Actually living it out is a different story. A couple of years ago my wife and I pulled together with eight friends at Westwood and started a small group. There are not words to describe how glad I am that we did this, and how deeply grateful I am for our group. It takes a bold step in order to live connected to others. When we do, it’s worth it. What about you? Do you have a group of people that you can celebrate the good in your life with? Carry burdens with you that are tough? Do you have a small clan of people that show up at your doorstep unannounced to do both of these things and everything in-between? If not–it’s time to take that step. In February we are doing an event called, “Group Connect.” Information about it is on this page. It will be a great environment to take this bold step in, and I’m praying that you do. We are hoping to get 250 Westwood people connected to a group of people that can become a band of friends to journey with. Join us for group connect–life is better connected!

2015 Men’s Bible Study Gospel of Luke–From the Outside In Tuesdays, January 20–April 7, 7:00–8:30pm, Room A205* A twelve week study of the Gospel of Luke including small group discussion with a short video lesson every week. Each week will include discussion questions and homework. From the start of Luke to finish, Jesus is depicted as accessible to the unknowns, the outcast, the lost, and the hopeless. Luke points out that Jesus’ desire was not just to call sinners but to call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32) and find reconciliation with God. As a result, this return to God by outsiders causes insiders to re-evaluate the biblical story and examine what the foundation of their relationship with God ought to be. Groups/Studies Women’s Bible Study–Tuesdays Tuesdays Mornings, January 13–February 24, 9:30–11:30am* Woodside (Childcare available for Tuesday Mornings) Tuesdays Evenings, January 13–February 24, 7:00–9:00pm* Woodside One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer The Egyptians in Exodus 1 were intent on enslaving the Israelites, wearing them down so that God’s chosen people would become disillusioned and not live up to their destiny. Of the original two million Israelites who received God’s invitation to enter the Promised Land, only two actually entered it! Similarly, modern day Christians often hear and understand the promises of God each Sunday morning at church, but then rarely choose to experience them in everyday life. During this sevenweek study, Bible teacher Priscilla Shirer invites us to change the pattern for good, living beyond our circumstances and expecting to see God move in miraculous ways day after day. One in a Million is an opportunity for you to experience your deliverance from strongholds, to conquer your wilderness living, and to claim your God-given inheritance. Cost: $17 / $22 after January 4. •

Group Connect

How To Find a Small Group

Mondays, February 2 and 9, 6:30–8:30pm* Woodside

GroupSearch allows people to search online for open small groups. • Go to www.westwoodcc.org/groupsearch and click on the down arrow under category. • Choose a category of interest and then click on Search. • By clicking on the group title, you’ll see the details of the group and decide if it is right for you. • Then on the right side, under the section titled, Interested in the group?, you can submit a request to the leader for more information and someone will contact you.

God designed us to be in community with each other and lives are changed when people intentionally connect in a small group. Whether you are new to this small group thing or have been a part of groups in the past, we want to help you on your way. Group Connect is a 2 hour gathering where you can meet people in your same life stage or part of town and form common ground to start a small group. Your group will meet here at Westwood for two consecutive weeks. You will share a meal with your group, get to know the other members of your group through discussing questions from Sunday’s sermon, and then be given information on how your new group will operate for the next six weeks. This would be a great event to bring a friend. In order to guarantee that you will be in the same group, they must also register themselves. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of the meal. If you are unable to attend Group Connect, but still would like to be in a group, please look at open groups at https://westwoodcc.infellowship.com/GroupSearch.
