Child Dedication Orientation Class Sunday, October 26, 9:45am Prairie Room Babies bring so much joy to the life of a family and, whether through a birth or adoption, the arrival of a little one is certainly cause to celebrate! Here at Westwood, we love to take the opportunity in Worship Services to welcome, pray for and offer thanks to God for the life of a child through Child Dedication. Parents who are dedicating children for the first time at Westwood are strongly encouraged to attend this one-time informational class held monthly that helps explain what Child Dedication is in our setting. Dave is Director of Instructional Technology & Media Services at Minnetonka Public Schools, and a dad of four. Dave will address cyber-bullying, harassment, computer hacking and other possible dangers within technology, and will offer up sound strategies for helping us to manage our personal information while on line, with special awareness of the permanency of our digital record when using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat and more. Students Sundays Xchange (grades 6–8) Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm Room A112 We worship together, participate in discussion groups with caring adult leaders, play games and mixers to get moving, and hear a message related to middle school students.

Welcome to Student Ministry! We host Wednesday night programming for all students in grades 6–12 during the school year. Additionally, there is Sunday morning programming for students in grades 6–8 which meets all year long. New students and friends join us every week, so invite a friend today. Weekly, we seek to give students a place to connect with one another, a caring adult and God. Large group messages encourage students to take the next step of faith, no matter where they are today. Then, through engaging small group conversation, they learn to blend faith and life together, growing in their faith and convictions in Christ. We, along with families, seek “sticky faith” for our students beyond high school.

Each week we’ll discuss a question to help students consider their faith now and for the future. Students, bring your Bibles!

Seeking to know God as a 9th Grade student

Abby is one of 114 students involved in Upper Room last year. Upper Room meets every Wednesday night to dig into what we believe and why.

“I HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS CLOSE TO GOD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.” reflected many 9th grade students at the end of Upper Room last spring. This sentiment reflects the heartbeat and vision of the Upper Room ministry–that students would grow to know God more intimately, have greater clarity and ownership of what they believe and why, be connected in life-changing community, and serve God genuinely. As the Upper Room Associate, I get a front row seat to see student grow spiritually. Abby participated in Upper Room this past school year and experienced significant growth in her walk with the Lord. She regularly attended Boost as a middle school student and when entering high school, she eagerly came to Upper Room. The excitement in her eyes and enthusiasm in her desire to grow in her faith encouraged both the students and leaders around her. She had a contagious joy and excitement for God, life and Upper Room. Throughout the year she learned the foundational core of what she believes and why. She grew through engaging in small group, taking notes during messages, attending service opportunities, worship nights, and events like “Movie, Pizza, and God Talk,” where students viewed movies with Christian themes and engaged in discussion about how God is represented through Hollywood movies and how they can personally grow to represent Jesus clearly through their lives. She made her faith her own and began to engage more deeply in her personal relationship with Jesus. As the school year ended, she decided to make the high school ministry Colorado camp trip part of her summer. God became even more real to her as she worshiped Him through music, saw His beauty revealed in creation, grew in Christian community, was challenged by the messages, engaged in small groups, and encountered God in very personal ways. The Colorado

trip became another benchmark in her spiritual journey, as it was a powerful catalyst for spiritual growth and maturity. As the summer continued, she felt God leading her to be baptized. She proclaimed in her testimony, “I am growing to trust God and His plan for my life, and I want to be obedient to Him by following Him into the waters of baptism.” Her family, dear friends, and other Upper Room students gathered in September to hear her story and support her in this momentous experience in her spiritual walk. It was a privilege to baptize Abby after a year of witnessing great spiritual growth in her and seeing God do a mighty work in her life. Summer Vacation for a Dynamic Duo Westwood Children’s Ministries has something we call a “WIN Statement” that helps to guide and fuel our mission of partnering with parents in the spiritual nurture of their kids: We WIN when Westwood kids and families love and connect with Jesus Christ, one another and the world around them. Everything we do flows out of that critical precept. To accomplish that, we need gifted and dedicated lay leaders–lots of them–who get the gist of what that means and are willing to commit their God-given time, talents and treasure toward that end. AS THE DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES, I was recently approached by two dynamic young women, on fire for serving God, who feel their purpose in life is to reach kids with the transformative love of Jesus Christ. They asked if I would be willing to review a Vacation Bible School curriculum they had recently co-written, which included original praise & worship songs, age-appropriate Bible Studies, games, crafts, offering focus, and so much more. Finding it to be comprehensive and compelling, with everything they would need to be successful in their pursuit of helping kids to grow in their faith, I gave them my enthusiastic endorsement. They are eleven years old. Yep, I said it; eleven! Meet Emma and Elise, two of the most “on-fire for Jesus” people I have ever met! about their summer vacation. Emma happens to be one of my neighbors, and Elise is her good friend, and together they co-wrote “Faith Foundations,” a backyard Bible camp experience for kids ages 6–9. Inspired by previous impactful camp experiences, including Westwood VBS, Emma and Elise hit on a fun and faith-filled formula that was a huge winner with the 22 kids who attended their camp! “Helping with VBS at Westwood and going to it when we were younger really made us want to do this, explained Emma. “We feel like our friendship with Jesus and each other has gotten so much deeper.” Elise described multiple Facetime planning sessions that it took to write the camp’s content. “It was a lot of work! God really helped us because, without Him, we wouldn’t have gotten it all done.” They enlisted the help of friends, Lucy, Ben and Alex to help lead and execute the camp, which happened in August at Emma’s house. “All of our leaders go to Westwood, and we couldn’t have done it without them!” They circulated flyers, charged a small fee to cover costs of snacks and activities, and ran the camp both inside and outside at Emma’s home. Kids from the neighborhood and beyond attended and, as the girls pointed out, there were 17 boys out of the total registration. The boys kept the leadership team hopping! “There were lots of different personalities, and we had to stay really organized and structured, mostly for the boys, and we had to work to keep them on task,” said Emma.

Elise added, “Boys don’t usually like to sing, but our boys loved it! One boy had a hard time settling down, but I discovered that he responded well to music. It was a good outlet for him, and he really engaged. I’m the same way; music really calms me down.” Emma and Elise wanted to encourage kids to be cheerful and compassionate givers, and were purposeful in choosing an offering focus kids would get excited about. The daily offerings blessed a little boy sponsored through Safe Families, an organization that places vulnerable children in stable homes until their parents can adequately care for them. They successfully collected both diapers and money to support the effort. They even had a game show and set a goal as we do at Westwood’s VBS. Mimicking the fun we have at VBS, the leaders had buckets of water dumped over their heads. Both girls cited their parents as being strong role models and spiritual influencers. Elise mentioned that she and her mother have a shared interest in singing and writing Christian music. Emma praised her Mom and Dad for encouraging her faith and allowing the camp to be held at their house. Emma’s Mom, Christie, teaches Sunday School at Westwood, and the girls serve as her helpers. The girls love coming to Westwood, and feel they have gotten much stronger in their faith as they have attended. “When I went to Westwood and learned about how much Jesus loves me, it just clicked!” declared Elise. “Westwood has a heart for everyone to know Christ; I think it’s the best church I’ve ever been to! I love listening to the sermons on my iPhone!” Emma added, “My time at family camp and Westwood have made a big difference for me, and my parents, too!”

The super-fun week wrapped up with parents coming for the big finale that included a celebratory video re-cap of the entire week’s activities. As I wrapped up my visit with the girls, I asked them for their final thoughts about Faith Foundations. “Were you exhausted when it was over and will you do it again?” I asked. They both exclaimed, “YES & YES!” Emma added, “We’ll just start planning a little earlier.” Wise words, Emma, wise words. I’m feeling pretty encouraged about the future of faith at Westwood and in our community. With Emma and Elise, along with their leadership team of Lucy, Ben and Alex and the powerful hand of God guiding and blessing them, the sky’s the limit! Thai Mission Trip

On Saturday Morning, November 1, Westwood will begin the journey of discovering what it means for us personally and our church to be an advocate for justice–Biblical justice.

Is God calling you to join a ministry trip to Thailand? This coming January there will be a ministry trip to Chiang Mai Thailand. Numerous missionaries will be gathered in that town for a Pioneers Regional Retreat. The purpose of this ministry trip is to serve the missionaries by caring for their children as they attend the conference. The child care use a Vacation Bible Study format used at Westwood. We are looking to build a team of 12 people.

Other times, telling people we’re busy makes it sound like we matter – like we are extra important. Either way, a crazy busy life isn’t what God intended when he sent His Son to give us life to the full. This series will address our overcrowded lives and how we might make room. What happens when we come together to worship? I had the privilege of diving into this question with Pastor Joel on August 16 & 17 during our weekend worship services. It’s something I so look forward to coming together to worship each week. As we do, there are three movements to it that I think are helpful to keep in mind. The first movement is upward. We come into his courts with thanksgiving and praise. We give back the breath he’s already given to us, breathing out worship in response to the revelation of who God is that he is always opening up inside us. The second is inward. As we encounter God’s presence in worship, we can’t help but be transformed. It says in James 4, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” When this happens, that nearness makes us new. Lastly, the movement is forward. As we are changed, we are sent out to share that change. As he fills us, he calls us forward with him, wherever he leads, to pour out his never-ending flow through us, and we get to stand in awe, again and again.
