FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, The wait to join the Wetherby Senior School community has been a long one and I am delighted to finally be in post. I have greatly enjoyed meeting the boys and I am looking forward to meeting you in the coming weeks at the Year 11 Information Evening, the New Parents’ Reception and the coffee mornings/afternoons for current parents of pupils in Years 8-10. I am very fortunate to be joining this school at this time. Preparations are already underway for the Sixth Form, which will be led by Mrs Deedat, and, to help with our planning, she has already started talking to the boys about possible A Level options; soon she will have colours schemes and designs for their new accommodation to share with them. This is a great opportunity for the boys to play a part in the development of the Sixth Form Centre and prefigures the leadership opportunities and the increased responsibility that goes hand in hand with being a member of the Sixth Form and a role model for the younger students. With the Sixth Form on the horizon, it means this is an important
year for our oldest boys as they begin the countdown to their GCSEs in the summer. Miss Ridley, the Head of Middle School (Years 10 & 11), and her team of tutors are there to support and guide the boys throughout the year. The Year 11 Parents’ Information Evening on September 12th will give you a valuable insight into the challenges ahead, the changes to the grading system and a brief introduction to the Sixth Form. There will also be a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about this crucial time and I encourage you to attend. Planning is also underway for our new building, Hannah House. I visited the building towards the end of the summer break and, with a little imagination, it was clear that there is scope to design spaces that enhance the boys’ learning and will enable us to expand our co-curricular offering. I hope to be able to share more with you in due course. It was a successful summer for some of the Wetherby boys. I was very pleased to hear that the tour to Spain was a great success. Mr Montgomery reported to me what fantastic ambassadors for the school the tourists were and this meant
that the staff were able to enjoy the trip as much as the boys. Congratulations are also due to the five boys in Year 8 and 9 (Year 8: Max Hashem, Frejvid Gislev & Nico Sharma; Year 9: Antonio Mendez-Estevez & Leo Liotti) who sat their GCSE French, Spanish or Italian last summer and were all awarded an A*. Finally, Miss Bradley, the Head of Graphic Design, has taken on The Barometer this year; I hope that you enjoy the new look. Along with the usual news and updates, The Barometer will take a different department or area of the school as the focus each week. Best wishes

BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR
Mr Montgomery writes…. The Games and Spanish Departments ran a joint trip to Barcelona from the 7th – 12th July, which was the largest trip to have run so far at Wetherby Senior School. The boys had an exceptionally early start as they crawled out of bed for the 4am coach to Heathrow. The boys were suitably impressed with the hotel and quickly checked into their apartments before donning beach attire as we strolled down on our first afternoon at the resort before heading back to the hotel for dinner and an early night. DAY ONE The boys prepared for their first game with a solid training session ran by the RCD Española coaches at our private 4G training ground. The boys spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool or the beach before we headed into town for an ice cream and some shopping and then we headed back to the hotel for an early night to be prepared for the first game the next day.
DAY TWO Day two started with a fantastic cooked breakfast followed by our second training session. The boys were extremely excited as they knew they had their first fixture coming up so they decided to rest and relax around the pool with some boys taking part in a water polo competition. The tour couldn’t have started in a better fashion with both the B and A team winning both fixtures 6-2 and 3-1 respectively. Despite some jeers from some Spanish spectators, the matches were played in good spirits and the boys left the stadium with huge grins. DAY THREE We went to Girona a beautiful cobbled city famous for its Iberico ham and the setting for the hit series Game of Thrones. The boys went off in small groups with some euros to spend completing challenges set by Senor McFaul. The photo round proved the favourite with some highly amusing selfies produced at the end of the afternoon. Most groups also kissed the Lion’s bum, a tradition in Girona which is
said to bring you good luck. In the evening, the boys went to the bowling alley followed by a successful session at the arcades! DAY FOUR The boys explored the beach strip, some stopping at the shops in town to pick up some gifts to take home, and some heading straight for a game of beach football and a dip in the crystal clear sea. After an exciting day, the boys went back to the hotel to rest before their second fixture. The A team started off with a contentious draw with two disallowed goals, which after review were not anywhere near being offside. The B team played next but despite their best efforts were defeated by the fast passing of the opposition. DAY FIVE We went to the local aqua park which had some terribly tall water slides, which even our most extroverted boys had to think twice about going down. Senor McFaul set the tone for the day as he embarked first down the tallest and most dangerous looking slide at the park! The boys had a fantastic day and most managed to get onto every single ride at the park, including the water rapids, wave machine and death drop!
At our last fixture of the tour the B team started off and it was clear to see that these were the best opposition we had faced so far. Despite a fantastic team performance, they unable to beat the tough opposition. The A team took to the field straight after and managed to
hit the post in the first half, which ended nil – nil. The boys started the second half in a positive manner but lost the game despite a brave performance.
DAY SIX We visited La Pedrera, Gaudi’s famous modernist home. The boys took photos from the rooftop and enjoyed learning about Gaudi before they were let loose on the streets of Barcelona to complete some last minute shopping. After
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR some traditional Spanish tapas, we took the coach to the Camp Nou. The boys were in awe of the magnificent stadium and spent their time reading up on the history of the club as well as taking pictures of the trophies, pitch and changing rooms.
I have been a trip leader for many tours and ski trips at previous schools but I can honestly say that this was the most pleasurable tour I have run. All of the boys that came on tour represented the school tremendously well and we received comments from cabin
staff, tourists and the hotel about how polite and wellmannered our boys were. We hope that we will be able to run this trip in the future so keep your eyes out in the Barometer!

A NEW GRAPHIC DESIGN SUITE

The Graphic Design studio had a major refurbishment over the summer break. The room saw a sixteen bay computer suite installed, allowing for both high spec hard drives and 24” monitors to be housed on bespoke desks designed especially for the room. As well as this, a brand new high end laser cutter was fitted. We can’t wait to get the boys using the new facilities and hope that they will feel inspired and motivated in this superb classroom environment.
