BAROMETER THE
WETHERBY SENIOR SCHOOL WEEKLY JUNE 17th 2019 | WEEK 8
FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, The public examinations finished this week with the final exam, GCSE Further Maths, and the boys in Year 10 have today finished their programme of examinations. There have been lots of strong results and many of the boys should be justly proud of the way they have finished the year. There will be lessons too, particularly for those in Years 10 and 12, and staff will give feedback before the end of term. The School values feedback from you too and I hope that you all received my letter about this year’s parent survey. If you missed it, the online survey can be found here: https:// www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ E5H18/ The survey will close on Thursday 27th June 2019. When the results are in, three of the governors, Mark Hanley Browne
(CEO), Tim Haynes (Director of Senior Schools) and Rossella Proscia (Director of Marketing) will be available to meet any parents who would like to come and discuss the outcomes on Monday 1st July at 5.00pm. One piece of feedback we have received from current and prospective parents was that the website was not particularly user friendly and, to quote one parent, “a bit clunky”. Our new website came online at the end of this week. I hope you will find it easier to use and enjoy the many new photos of the boys that have been uploaded. Last night there was an excellent exhibition of the Year 11 Art and Graphic Design GCSE work in the Drama Studio. It showcased the creativity of the boys and, following the visit by the external moderator yesterday, I hope their efforts are
rewarded. There is much to look forward to in the final weeks of term with trips to the theatre, Go Ape, the British Museum as well as the Lower School Play, Sports Day and Prize Giving. Details about these events have either been sent to you or will be coming out shortly. I hope you enjoy the weekend,

YEAR 9 WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Mrs Skinner writes... On Monday evening, the annual Year Nine Wildlife Photography Exhibition took place at the Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square. Every year, the exhibition is held in memory or Marcos Burnett, who was one of our pioneer students who tragically lost his life in the Italian Earthquake in 2016. Marcos was very fond of wildlife photography and spent many happy holidays taking photographs with his family, so the exhibition is held to celebrate his life and one of his passions.
There was an impressive number of beautiful photographs on display, with a wide range of wildlife subjects. The majority of photographs were taken during our field day at Kew Gardens, but it was lovely to see many of the boys submitting their own photographs from different places. The quality was very high, as many of the boys took inspiration from our visit to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the Natural History Museum. This made judging the competition
very difficult, but in the end, the following boys were awarded prizes from our judges, Ann-Louise, Simon and Adriana Burnett: Winner: Theodore Chertischev Highly Commended: Ali Jiwa, Rafael Hajar , Samuel Singer, Jack Kastiner Commended: Jude Brazier, Jeremy Burt, Lorenzo Scopece, Faisal Abaalkhail, Matteo Hurrell, Charlie Burke Thank you to all of you who attended the exhibition.
BIOLOGY CHALLENGE 2019! Mrs Skinner writes... A few months ago, the Biology Department selected 30 Year 10 boys take part in the Royal Society of Biology’s Biology Challenge 2019. This is an international biology competition, which assesses the students on their understanding of the biology curriculum, as well as their awareness of biology in the media. This year, a total of 47,183 students from 527 schools worldwide participated in the competition. I am pleased to announce that many of our students received an award for the competition and four of them were even awarded a Gold, which only 5% of participants were awarded in the competition. A huge congratulations to the following boys:

HISTORY CLUB VISIT THE WALLACE COLLECTION Mr Warner writes… This year in History Club we have dedicated a lot of time to the Wallace Collection. Over the last few months History Club have spent numerous Friday lunch times at the collection and more recently I have asked the boys to research one object in particular from the collection hat was of interest to them. Inspired by the History of the World in 100 objects, we did our own History of the Wallace Collection in 10 objects. The last time we visited the collection, instead of the boys all heading off to look at the collection themselves, we went round as a group and the boys presented on their chosen objects. Our self-guided tour included Canaletto’s Venice: the Bacino di San Marco from the Canale della Giudecca, Les hasards heureux de l’escarpolette (The Swing) by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, The Dog of the Regiment Wounded by Horace Vernet, Rubens’s The Rainbow Landscape and Ottheinrich’s equestrian armour. I was impressed by the way in which the boys approached this task and the range of objects they chose to cover. Their presentations suggested that they had all tried to find out about their chosen subject in terms of both its provenance and wider significance as an artefact.
From top: boys admire Ottheinrich’s equestrian armour, Himat S-V presents to the group in front of Les hasards heureux de l’escarpolette (The Swing) by JeanHonoré Fragonard, Rani G speaks to the group about The Dog of the Regiment Wounded by Horace Vernet.
