THE BRASS BAND TOUR TO PARIS, THE GCSE EXHIBITION AND MORE...

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, As we come to the end of another busy term, there is a great deal to pack in. Interviews have been taking place this week for our first set of School Prefects, with the Head Boy and any Deputies being chosen by me. The oldest boys in the School have, for some time, been the de facto role models for the younger boys but it is exciting that they will now take on more formal positions and they will work to shape these roles for the future. Like so many areas of the School, they will start the job of setting the culture that future years will build on and develop and I am looking forward to announcing who they will be to the wider school community on July 5th.

Earlier this week, I was delighted, with Mr Lawrence and Mr Kyles Brown, to be judging the presentations of the Year 7 Plastics Project. The boys were challenged to come up with a product that was made from recycled plastic that could be sold and pitch it to us in front of their friends and parents. We were all struck by the confidence of the boys, the research that had gone in to the problem of nonrecyclable plastics, and the enthusiasm with which they presented their products. These ranged from jewellery to a gardening kit, from a sweet dispenser to a holder for your wet umbrella. A Puggy Bank, a money box constructed from a variety of plastics and made to look like a pug, was the eventual winner in an evening that

showcased a variety of skills. I am grateful to Miss Hoskins and the Chemistry department for setting the challenge. Next week sees two major events – Sports Day and Prize Giving. Details about both have been sent out and prize winners will be notified as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing you all there to celebrate what has been another successful year at the School. Have a good weekend

THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Mr Martin writes... This year the boys in Brass Band have been working so hard preparing for a number of high profile concerts. Since then the boys have been busy rehearsing and performing in concerts throughout the year. The boys rehearse every Tuesday after school in the Music Department. This year we welcomed some new boys. Coby L, Vangelis F and Leopold P-B on Trumpet. We look forward to Mark M, Faiz A and Aiden B joining next year on Trombone and Tuba. The recent tour to Paris was a great success. The band performed brilliantly at Disneyland, performing in front of 300 people on the Videopolis stage. We also performed in the bandstand on the Champs-Elysees.

This year the department has put on thirteen concerts; half-termly recital evenings, Rock School concerts, LiveLounge’s, BrassBash, Classical Concerts, Christmas concert and our performance at the Coutts music festival. All year 7 boys learn a brass instrument in their lessons which is a fantastic opportunity that the boys approach with great enthusiasm. The Department runs many rehearsals and ensembles each week: Orchestra Funk Band Guitar Ensemble Cello Ensemble Brass Band Training Band Percussion Ensemble String Ensemble Wind Ensemble Rock School Theory Club

Finally a big thank you to all the parents and staff who have supported our concerts this year. A special thank you to Mr Lewis and Mr Vaitkevicus for their fantastic commitment to making the brass band and the brass tour a great success.

Mr V writes... It has been a pleasure to work with all the boys in the brass band over the last few years. The dedication and hard work they put into every rehearsal is really starting to pay dividends, evident with an amazing year full of performances including concerts & collaborations with Queens College. The Brass Band tour to Paris was a great outing for the boys, first on the Videopolis mainstage at Disney, followed by a ‘thrilling’ performance on the Champs-Elysees bandstand. With one more performance coming up at Prize-Giving I know that all the boys involved, Mr Lewis, Mr Martin and myself are super excited to showcase to the entire school and parents just how much fun we have ‘playing in the band’. I wish the band every success and look forward to hearing about their progress and upcoming performances.

BRASS BAND TOUR TO PARIS Mr Sam Lewis, brass teacher and Brass Band tutor writes... I was extremely proud of the Wetherby Brass Band boys on the recent tour to Paris, as they gave two excellent performances which proved just how far they have come since the band started 18 months ago. Following a lot of hard work and several warm-up performances at home, the boys performed a mix of music from traditional marches through to some energetic pop songs including

the thriller that is Michael Jackson’s Thriller! Both performances were extremely well received by appreciative audiences in Disneyland Paris and the Champs-Élysées, and are surely a signal of intent for more exciting things to come from the band. I was particularly impressed with the maturity shown at Disneyland, performing in the 800-seat Videopolis Theatre, as the boys’ energy and enthusiasm filled the hall and attracted positive comments from tourists and

locals alike. Special thanks must also go to our excellent student translators, Max H and Raphael Le B, who introduced the concert so eloquently in French and English at the Champs-Élysées bandstand. Away from the concert platform all of the boys continued to impress, helping to create a fantastic atmosphere which made the whole trip a hugely enjoyable experience for staff and students alike. I’m certainly looking forward to the next brass tour!

BRASS BAND TOUR TO PARIS Isaac E, Year 8 writes... The journey started smoothly outside Hannah House. The coach arrived on time and we left slightly later than we should have because I forgot my passport but who cares about that! We travelled on an amazing coach and we had great fun, I mean what do you expect a group of thirteen year olds to do on a 4 hour coach journey.. The ferry was nice except food was very expensive and once we arrived in Calais we travelled to out hotel. It was crazy and amazing; it had an indoor water park with amazing slides. We went to our rooms and went to the pool. There was one amazing water slide, which we all went down. We spent a lot of time enjoying ourselves in the water. The next day was the day we went to Disneyland for our first concert. It was fun because when we got there the stage we played on was massive. The performance went really well, we were all really pleased. We played all the pieces in front of an audience of 300 people ! Then we went on the rides, DISNEYLAND TIME had arrived! I had an amazing time performing and enjoying the rides at Disneyland, it certainly was the experience of a life time!!!

We then returned to our hotel and had another evening relaxing at the pool. The next day was sadly the last day. We travelled to Paris to perform our last concert. It was fun and we went on a boat tour down the River Seine. There was one strange thing that happened on the boat, and that was that there were a lot of people on the boat and they all wanted to take selfies with us ! They had the whole of Paris to look at but no, they wanted to take selfies with us!. It was crazy, they were shouting at each other trying to get others to take photos of them with us ! Once that was over we drove to the band stand on the side of the Chanteuse Lees. We were supposed to play at a band stand next to Notre Dame but sadly it burnt down. The performance at the band stand went really well. It was really nice to see so many friends and family that had travelled to see us play! Sadly we then had to return but it was an amazing trip and I want to say thank you to Mr Martin, Mr V and Mr Lewis for playing and organising the whole trip. I can’t wait for the next trip!!

GCSE EXHIBITION Miss Bradley writes... After a whole week of preparation, curation and assembly, the Year 11 Art and Graphic Design boys proudly exhibited their GCSE work in the Drama Studio. The exhibition showcased the broad range of media the boys have explored, from sculpture and ceramics, to photography, packaging design, illustration, website design and animation and the result was a rich and diverse show that demonstrated the unique talents of our artists. After two years of hard work, it was great to see the boys enjoying having their work on show, and hearing them talk about it with passion and confidence. Parents and visitors were impressed by both the individuality and the quality of the work!

VOTE FOR AIDAN! Mr Murphy writes... Curated by Bob and Roberta Smith RA and taking its inspiration from the Summer Exhibition, the first Young Artists’ Summer Show exhibition will showcase work by young artists from across the UK and beyond. This year, the very first Young Artists’ Summer Show asked for entries from schools and colleges across the UK. There were more than 6200 artwork submissions from young artists aged 7 to 19. 139 artworks by 135 artists were chosen showing a range of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and video works to be displayed in the Clore Learning Centre this summer. MFL TRANSLATION BEE Miss Page writes... On Thursday 13th June, 6 boys in Year 8 and Year 9 took part in the Regional Final for the MFL Translation Bee at Dulwich College, battling it out against 90 other students from across the south of England. They all performed brilliantly in what was a nerve-wracking experience where they had to translate sentences into French, German or Spanish in three tenses. They only had one minute to translate as many as possible, and translating 18 in total, we are very proud to announce that Matteo H in Year 9 achieved 4th place in French! This means that he will go through to the National Final at Cambridge University on the 3rd July. We want to say well done to all those that took part – Lorenzo R, Francesco R, Ramzi Ki, Alec F and Devan S, and a huge good luck to Matteo in the final stage of the competition.

YEAR 7 AND 8 DEBATING CLUB Miss Kirk writes... Our first few sessions established the basic structure and etiquette of formalised debate through a series of 'Balloon Debates'; needless to say Donald Trump fared worse than Charles Darwin... After I felt the boys had honed their speaking and listening skills and felt confident in using a range of persuasive techniques, the boys were challenged to evaluate the range of social and political systems explored in George Orwell's Animal Farm. This led to many a heated debate on the strengths and weaknesses of communism and capitalism, a whirlwind of Brexit opinions and a palpable eagerness to change the world! Consequently, I tasked the boys to design their own 'perfect society', implementing workable and practical laws and social systems, and to carefully consider how the running of their 'utopia' would be maintained and consistently effective for the majority. This week, the boys worked tirelessly researching and preparing a presentation to a panel of judges for next week's ultimate show down debate: 'Which Society Would You Most Want To Live In? As you can see, the competition is going to be fierce...
