SPRING/SUMMER 2014 SAILING COLLECTIONS Welcome to the new sailing collections for SS14. Highlights for this season include; DYNAMIC Modern sailboat racing has evolved into a high adrenaline, highly active performance sport. Technology at the top level does not end at yacht design; it has driven the need for complimentary equipment to help the boat go faster. Equipment such as sails, ropes, deck hardware and now clothing has emerged which is technologically advanced, ultra-lightweight and innovative. Musto has recognised this need and developed a DYNAMIC Collection to meet the demands of the fast-paced professional sailing circuit. Discover more on page 10.

EVOLUTION This season, the Evolution collection has gone through a thorough revamp. These garments have evolved beyond sailing and are now regularly used outside this sport - being highly versatile and suitable for many active outdoor pursuits. So, whilst building upon the pillars that have given the collection strength to date; technical innovation, outdoor essential & multi-sport functionality, MUSTO design & product development has taken a selection of garments and given them an extra dimension by incorporating elements from the new DYNAMIC direction. These garments will cross-merchandise into either the Evolution or Technical collections and in doing so, open up a new commercial product offering of highly technical everyday garments for the sports-lifestyle market. The Evolution collection is also showcasing a collection of exciting new technically advanced luggage, from the beautifully engineered solar-enabled bags, constructed without a single piece of thread to the striking yet highly practical waterproof Evolution luggage. PHOTOLUMINESCENCE Musto incorporated photoluminescent reflectors on the some foul weather gear for testing in the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race. Resounding feedback was positive with a strong recommendation from the crew that they should be included on more offshore garments. Authentic feedback from rigorous testing is invaluable to Musto in order to develop products which are not only innovative but truly fit for purpose. So for 2014, in addition to already being on the HPX pro SMOCK, photoluminescent technology reflectors will also feature on HPX OCEAN AND MPX OFFSHORE and the HPX Drysuit as a result and will certainly be a reason for consumers to upgrade.

SURF & COLOUR BURST You will notice a burst of colour into BR1 Inshore and a new ‘surf’ colour-way into many favourite Musto technical styles. For the BR1 Inshore, a popular cross-purpose jacket which is not solely used in the marine environment, this offers consumers more choice across traditional and modern colour palettes. The new ‘surf’ colour-way has been selected from colour trends and suits both genders. This is the much requested injection of colour that our staple styles need to attract existing and new customers to buy Musto Jackets.

COLLABORATION WITH CLARKS Musto has partnered the longstanding (188 years) British premium footwear manufacturer Clarks, to create a new collection of sailing shoes. The brief was to combine innovation, engineering excellence & authenticity to create footwear that is fit for active lifestyles that Musto consumers lead, both on and off the boat. How does it work?

What is GORE-TEX Fabric? ®

GORE-TEX fabrics are created by laminating a 100% waterproof GORE-TEX membrane between high performance textiles which provide high levels of breathable and waterproof protection. The GORE-TEX® membrane is the heart of all GORE-TEX® products. It is completely windproof and waterproof, but permeable for water vapour. The result: Water from the outside will never penetrate, cold winds cannot pass through and perspiration can escape easily. This is why your body always stays dry and comfortable with GORE-TEX products.

Other fabrics can weaken with wear or washing. GORE-TEX® fabrics are designed to be durably waterproof, windproof and breathable to maintain performance for the useful life of the product.

Engineered using 3-layer GORE-TEX® pro product technology for maximum ruggedness to withstand extended use in extreme conditions. The Ocean Technology® membrane is 3x thicker than the standard GORE-TEX® membrane and all components have strict performance specifications to ensure optimum strength. GORE™ Micro Grid Backer technology improves garment comfort and performance using an innovative internal backer fabric. This technology improves internal abrasion and snag resistance, enhances garment breathability and decreases garment weight. It also allows the garment to slide easily over mid-layers. GORE-TEX® Pro garments must pass Gore’s toughest test conditions and most aggressive rainstorm test.

Constructed using 3-layer GORE-TEX® pro product technology for superior breathability, durability and waterproofness. The GORE-TEX® membrane is 2x thicker than the standard GORE-TEX® membrane and garments are designed to be the best protection for prolonged periods facing foul weather conditions. MPX Race Garments feature Stretch GORE-TEX® fabric panels to offer greater freedom of movement for high activity racing. GORE-TEX® Pro garments must pass Gore’s toughest test conditions and most aggressive rainstorm test.

Fabricated from a lightweight 3-layer GORE-TEX® for high activity sailing in warmer conditions. LPX garments are strippedout and lightweight, just like high performance sailing boats. This unique 3-layer GORETEX® fabric is exclusive to Musto in the marine market and offers extreme breathability, wind and waterproof protection. These lightweight garments are the ideal solution for day sailing, travel, hiking, golf or other activities where space and weight are critical. A protective layer on the inside of the GORE-TEX® membrane makes a separate lining unnecessary. The result: high performance, minimum weight and pack volume.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The Musto BR2 fabric is an innovative 2-layer microporous and hydrophilic (waterloving) coated fabric. The fabric breathes by allowing moisture from the warm, high humidity zone to escape through microscopic holes which are too small for water to penetrate. BR2 fabric is waterproof to a minimum of 15,000mm hydrostatic head and has a breathability of at least 4,000 MVP (moisture vapour transfer) even after five test washes in the Musto lab. Musto technical garments are also treated with a DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent) which encourages water to bead and run off the external surface and preventing the fabric ‘wetting-out’.

Musto BR1 fabrics have a durable 2-layer hydrophilic (water-loving) coating which ‘breathes’ by absorbing moisture from the warm, high humidity zone and driving it outwards by ‘molecular wicking’ away from the body. BR1 fabrics are waterproof to a minimum of 5,000mm hydrostatic head and have a breathability of at least 3,000 MVP (moisture vapour transfer) even after five test washes in the. Musto lab. Musto technical garments are also treated with a DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent) which encourages water to bead and run off the external surface and preventing the fabric ‘wetting-out’.

Arctec high loft fleece is a breakthrough in durable, personal insulation - trusted by our test team to preserve core body temperature and maintain optimum working muscle temperature, even in bitter Southern Ocean conditions. Arctec fleece is soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Tiny air pockets in the super high loft fabric structure retain body heat whilst the lightweight breathable properties ensure rapid moisture transfer - keeping you dry, comfortable and warm with minimum bulk. It is hyrophobic, holding less than 1% of it’s weight in water, it remains much of its insulating powers - even when wet - and highly breathable, allowing perspiration to readily pass through the fabric. These qualities make it ideal for making clothing intended to be used during extreme physical activity.

D3O® containing intelligent molecules is flexible and moves with the wearer yet locks together on impact- absorbing energy & providing superior protection. D3O® outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times.

PHOTOLUMINESCENT TECHNOLOGY A process which absorbs light energy to create a luminous glow in the dark. The safety benefit of this technology was evident during the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race when sailors testing the reflectors felt more conspicuous to fellow crewmembers and as such enhanced their safety on board.

An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standard manufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabrics cannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such that the waterproof and breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point.

CORDURA® fabric provides rugged durable performance for a variety of end uses, including luggage, footwear and performance apparel. products made with CORDURA® fabrics feature enhanced tear and abrasion resistance, and long -lasting durability which means a longer garment lifetime. CORDURA® fabric is constructed with qualifying yarns which are woven, dyed and finished in accordance with INVISTA’s approved fabric standards for the CORDURA® brand.

The WINDSTOPPER® membrane is an ultra thin protective layer which is laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) which is expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspiration to pass through unhindered. This means that the WINDSTOPPER® membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivably restricting its initial breathability or weight.

Smooth, comfortable, high performance antibacterial yarn which provides increased, freshness through effective antibacterial action using silver ion technology.

COOLMAX® fabric is the performance fabric that includes an effective fiber-based moisture management system. The system can move perspiration away from the body, and through the fabric, where it can evaporate quickly, allowing the wearer the feel cooler and more comfortable.

Hollow-core fibre technology provides the most warmth at the lightest weight. The larger the surface area allows for faster evaporation by speeding moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric where it can evaporate more quickly.

A novel weave structure and denier produces sun protective properties. Fabrics have also been treated with chemicals effective at absorbing UV light during the manufacturing process. Care should be taken when washing this garment, to ensure detergents used boost UPF rating and increase garment life.
