The winners of the Quota International of Weyburn’s Women of the Year Awards gathered with their awards on Tuesday at McKenna Hall. From left are Christy Sanderson, Exceptional Entrepreneur award; Val Ness, Workplace Excellence award; Dara Currie, Young Woman of Distinction; and Maureen Clay, Community Service Award.

Quota Weyburn presents four Women of the Year awards By April Zielke The Quota International of Weyburn had their 19th annual Women of the Year Awards Luncheon on Tuesday at McKenna Hall, presenting awards in four categories. Val Ness won the Weyburn Credit Union Workplace Excellence Award. This award is given to a woman who supports the diverse needs of the workplace. Maureen Clay won the M. Isabelle Butters Quota International of Weyburn Community Service Award. This award is presented to a woman who, as a volunteer, mentors and inspires other through involvement in community programs and organizations. Christy Sanderson was presented with the Access Communications Exceptional Entrepreneur Award. This award goes to a woman who has successfully launched a business, product or service and who remains active in the business. Dara Currie was given the Hoffman, Michel & Associates IG Private Wealth Management Young Woman of Distinction Award. This award is presented to an exceptional young woman between the ages of 18 and

30 who has made a significant contribution to the life of her community. Ness is the VP of Human Resources at Weyburn Credit Union. She has worked with the Weyburn Credit Union for 44 years and has held a number of positions in the Credit Union’s operations. Recently, she had a large role in bringing in new branch renovations. The project brought a newly-defined functionality, as well as a renewed branding to Weyburn Credit Union. “It’s an incredible organization to work for and I feel fortunate to have been there and to be able to make a difference in implementing programs that will benefit our employees and our members down the road,” said Ness about the support she receives from her workplace. Clay has been an active member in numerous community groups such as the Rotary Club, the Weyburn Wood Carvers and Weyburn Horticultural Society. She has acted as personal support and a board member for the Grace United Church since 1978. She committed 20 years to the original Wheat Festival committee, eight of which she served

as chairman. For 10 years she served the Upper and Lower Watershed Advisory Committee and has also been involved in Sunrise Community Futures. In the last five years, Sanderson has taken ownership of three businesses. In 2015, she purchased Old Fashion Foods. In early 2018 she opened up Coco Bee Boutique with Kendra Sutherland, but unfortunately the two made the decision in March 2019 to close the store. In 2018, she purchased Expressions Ladies Wear from Prairie Sky Co-op in November. Asked what advice she had for up and coming entrepreneurs or those who are thinking of starting a business, Sanderson said, “My advice would always be go for it because if it works, that’s great, and if it doesn’t, you learn so much along the way that you’ll be better ready to do it next time. Definitely take the risk because it’s worth it.” Currie began working for Golden West in the Discover Weyburn newsroom in November 2013. In early 2014, she became a swing announcer which meant she alternated between being a news reporter and host. By 2015 she officially

became a DJ and ascended to the position of Morning Show host on BIG 106 FM. “I did not expect to win at all. I was up against some incredible nominees, so to be the one standing here is a big shock. I know for myself being in the day and age that we are in, there’s a lot of very feminist sentiments and myself I’m not necessarily one of the people who fall into that category, but to see all these women come together and inspire each other and just lift each other up and make each other happy, it’s incredible to see and I’m pleased to be a part of it,” Currie said about how important it was to have awards like this for women. The special guest speaker for the luncheon was CEO and President of

STARS, Andrea Robertson. Robertson fell in love with nursing after graduating from high school and worked her way up the ranks and acted in a number of roles before accepting her current position. In her speech, Robertson highlighted love and courage as playing a large role in making up a leader. “Fundamentally and simply, love is very important. When I think about how did my career begin, well, it was love. My parents were great people and I think that if you can do anything for little ones around you, it’s to love them well because I think that if you believe that you can do anything then indeed you can. In my view, the important ingredients of great leaders are courage, to act with integrity

and to try and always do the right thing. It sounds so simple, but it’s not always so simple.” She was also very impressed with the community of Weyburn in bringing together this event. “What my job teaches me every single day is that it is an absolute privilege to live and to be happy and to be involved in your community. This is it folks, this is the only life we’ve got, so we need to embrace it, whether as a female leader, a male leader, as a person that belongs to this incredible community. Look at what you’ve done here, it’s impressive. What you are doing here in this community is unbelievable. It takes a community to come together, to lead together to achieve an outcome, which you have done today. “

A campaign to put the heads of fire and police agencies in jail by raising $2,000 each is continuing on until all of the funds are raised. This is a fundraiser for STARS, and was started at the “Evening with STARS” held on Tuesday evening at McKenna Hall. The goal is to raise $2,000 each to put Weyburn Police Chief Marlo Pritchard, Fire Chief Simon Almond, and Sgt. Brian Neilmeyer, commanding officer of Weyburn’s RCMP detachment, in jail for a day. At the fundraiser event, $2,210 was raised, with another $200 donated by the Weyburn Police Association

Information session set for foster families An information meeting will be held in Weyburn on Thursday, April 18, for foster families in the southeast area, to pass on the details about a new payment structure for the families as announced in the budget. In Wednesday’s provincial budget, the government made changes to the payment structure for foster families to streamline payment levels. Currently, foster families receive basic maintenance payments which vary from

$689.99 to $1,051 and a skill development fee of $125 (per child, per month) after completing required training and one year of service. Payment structure changes will take effect in the Fall of 2019. Information sessions will be held in communities across the province and foster families are encouraged to attend. In Weyburn, the meeting set for April 18 will be held at the Travelodge Hotel starting at 1:30 p.m.

on Wednesday morning to bring the total to $2,410. Once the funds are raised, they will be donated to STARS, along with the other funds raised on Tuesday night, which is also going towards building a helicopter pad for Weyburn’s new acute-care hospital. Donations can be made to either the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation office or at the Weyburn Police station, and the foundation will issue tax receipts. The totals aren’t in yet for the “Evening with STARS”, but the silent and live auctions raised about $17,000, with the other totals to come in later.

SCANDALS FORESHADOW THE FEDERAL ELECTION Greg Nikkel editor@weyburnreview.com

T

he ongoing drama in Ottawa that seems to unfold a new chapter every day is just a precursor of the federal election that is on the way, set to be held in October. The biggest upheaval currently centres around the SNC-Lavalin scandal, which does not want to disappear in spite of the Liberals’ best efforts to quiet down the rhetoric, the arguing and the in-fighting in the Liberal caucus. In many ways, this is a mess of their own making, and it wasn’t helped in any way when Justin Trudeau tossed out two former cabinet ministers, both women and both formerly very popular: Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould. Philpott then turned around and claimed in Parliament that Trudeau broke the law by summarily tossing the two women from the Liberal caucus. While all of this was going on, Trudeau sent a letter to Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, accusing him of making libellous comments about the PM in regard to the SNC-Lavalin affair. This is a rich claim for Trudeau to be making, considering the scandal he and some high-ranking officials are embroiled in. For the Liberals, this is a major mess that isn’t going away, and in an election year, that could translate into major losses come October.

For the foes of Trudeau, the timing couldn’t be better as pressure is being brought to bear on Trudeau and the Liberals on an almost daily basis, not to mention the constant pressure being applied from western Canada in protest of the new carbon tax. Of course, Trudeau will ignore the protest rallies and comments being made in the West about the tax and about Bill C-69 and Bill C-48, both of which will greatly hurt the West and the oil and gas industry in particular. This is nothing new, as he has not responded in any positive way to the cries for help from the oil and gas industry or from western Canada in general, and he shows no inclination to change that. As the election campaigns get prepared to be rolled out after summer, the leaders of all of the parties ought to refocus their priorities and take a look at why they’re even in politics at all. As federally-elected officials, they represent the citizens of Canada, and as such they ought to have the best interests of the populace in mind. They should also be mindful of the needs of every region, and not just those of Quebec and Ontario. There are serious issues facing the Canadian economy, with challenges facing nearly every sector, and there needs to be viable plans put forward as to how they are going to deal with these issues if they are elected to Parliament. All candidates need to get serious about addressing these problems.

Wait until then By Linda Wegner Until. Such a little word, yet so packed with meaning and insinuations. We use it all the time; so much, in fact, that I decided to look it up. Here’s what I found: First, “until” is a preposition meaning “up to the point in time or the event mentioned”, a word that basically introduces information to the reader. Next, “then”, another little word that we use constantly, the other part of my musings. This four-letter adverb carries meanings such as “at the time in question or afterwards”. For all you English majors, this is nothing new, but while reading Psalm 73 the other day, both that preposition and the adverb struck a chord of encouragement in my heart. Here’s what triggered these thoughts (just in case you think I merely was desperate for something to write about): Life hands all of us ups and downs all the time. Some are resolved immediately, some others quite

quickly, while others, a long way down the road. Still others seem so far in the future that it’s a challenge to believe that they (or it) will actually come to fruition. Between what’s going on in world conflicts and the political tensions being felt across both Canada and the United States, I’ve almost stopped listening to the news. Then, while there’s been an understandable backlash against atrocities committed against some religious minorities, there’s been nary a whisper regarding others, making discouragement easy to come by. But back to Psalm 73. As I found myself bathed in despair, Until and Then jumped out at me and lifted my spirits. Hope these words affect you the same way! “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me UNTIL I went into the sanctuary of God, THEN I understood their end.” (Psalm 73:16) That’s Easter – He’s still Lord!

Carbon tax will be onerous burden on trucking industry

The carbon tax was applied as of April 1, and the Saskatchewan Trucking Association still opposes its implementation. Because Saskatchewan is a listed province (a backstop jurisdiction the federal government forced the tax on), Saskatchewan companies are required to track the location of purchase of diesel fuel and the where this fuel is consumed. This requirement and the carbon tax overall are placing an administrative burden on companies in Saskatchewan. This burden creates an uneven playing field that may make small local companies less competitive as they try to keep up with extra costs. The carbon tax requirements are a big change for companies. The STA asserts that companies were not properly notified of the requirement to register with CRA in regards to the federal carbon charge. Due to this lack of communication, there are companies that have failed to register. Those who fail to register will be charged $2,000, which the STA sees as an unreasonable fine that was avoidable. Additionally, there has been a lack of clarity from the federal government on how companies are to report their fuel purchasing and consumption, when trucking companies will be charged

for the tax, and when they will be refunded. “The Saskatchewan Trucking Association has opposed this taxation since it was announced. Even if the end cost is ultimately passed on, the burden this places on trucking companies is excessive. Companies who cannot comply in time will be fined – that is yet another burden this tax brings. This has left many companies scrambling, and we are only at the registration phase,” said STA Executive Director Susan Ewart. The trucking industry is supportive of emission reduction, but the federal carbon tax is not the best solution. Many members of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association spend significant time and money investing in greener fleets. The carbon tax system will take time and money away from fleets that could and should invest in new equipment and technology to help Saskatchewan, and by extension Canada, meet emission reduction requirements. A convoy and the Regina Rally Against the Carbon Tax was held on April 4, with over 700 vehicles gathering at the Queensbury Downs in Regina. The convoy was comprised of farm and oil vehicles from all over the province.

The Emily Haupstein rink of Weyburn took part in the U18 Nationals in Sherwood Park on April 2-7, finishing second in their pool, but losing two close games in the playoffs. The rink was comprised of skip Emily Haupstein, third Shayla Moore, second Emma Wiens and lead Abbey Johnson. A special part of the week was having third Shayla Moore named to receive the Fair Play award, an honour that was voted on by the officials of Curl Canada. The Team Saskatchewan rink played eight games, with five of the eight games played on the

arena ice and three in the attached Sherwood Park Curling Club. With the 14 teams split in two pools of seven, Sask finished with a record of 4-2 taking second spot in Pool A and earned the opportunity to play the thirdplace team New Brunswick from Pool B in a double knock-out playoff round. The Saturday morning game saw Team Haupstein not as sharp, curling 65 per cent as a team versus team New Brunswick’s 64 per cent, and finding the ice difficult to read back in the curling rink after playing the previous two games in the arena.

Returning to the arena on the feature sheet C, the Haupstein rink fell just shy of extending their playoff run any further as B.C. made their last shot in eight to count two on a measurement. The event was spread over a seven days and scheduled many fun activities for the team, beginning with opening ceremonies on April 1 and ending April 7 with a victory party with all teams participating on Sunday. It was a fantastic experience for the curling teams, families, friends, and the communities and provinces that were represented at the event.

Grant-writing workshop in Pangman

Photo — Joni Hagen

A group of community volunteers gathered for a grant-writing workshop at the Pangman library on April 3, put on by the South East District Sport, Culture and Recreation district. The district offers the mini-workshops to any community group or organization that requests it, for local sport, culture or recreation volunteer teams or boards.

Southeast Rec. district offers mini-workshops

South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District, one of seven district organizations in Saskatchewan based out of Weyburn, held a mini-workshop on grant writing in Pangman on April 3. The district helps build capacity in southeast communities by providing various training opportunities. Their mini-workshops are

one to two hours in length, offer condensed, resultsbased learning opportunities for local sport, culture or recreation volunteer teams or boards. Communities can complete mini-workshops on a variety of interesting topics (inclusion, effective meetings, policies and procedures) that will help volunteers gain valuable skills

and that will leave them with tools and templates to put new ideas into action. These are offered for free in community and can be held in conjunction with a community board meeting. The South East District delivered an “Introduction to Grant Writing” miniworkshop at the Pangman Library on April 3. Nine volunteers from the com-

munity and surrounding areas participated. The majority of volunteer groups depend on grants and outside funding to run programs, renovate facilities or develop special projects. Volunteers are often tasked with having to complete complex grant applications and need to research funding opportunities.
