T

he Village of Kenosee Lake is tucked away in the Moose Mountains next to the Moose Mountain Provincial Park. A destination hotspot for many visiting the southeast area, located 24 km north of Carlyle along Hwy 9, is host to the Kenosee Super Slides, various hiking and cycling trails, kayak and canoe rentals at Little Kenosee, miniature golf, tennis courts, beach volleyball, play parks, beach access, and a lot of history. Originally known as Fish Lake, it later became known as Kenosee, which is Cree for ish. In the 1890s cabins began to be built at the current village site and Charles and Harriet Christopher provided cabin, tent, and boat rentals until 1913. Christopher Trail is named in their honour at the lake. In 1906 the area was named a forest reserve and in 1931 would become one of the irst provincial parks. It was in the 1930s, during relief employment, that the pier, golf course, clubhouse, and stone chalet (now the park’s visitor centre and ofices) were developed. Be sure to stop by the chalet to chat with the summer interpreters at the park and learn all about the Moose Mountains. While the pristine 18-hole golf course draws in many each year to enjoy the beauty of the area along with a fun yet challenging game. Another fun stop at the lake includes popping in at the Moosehead Inn, which as rumour has it is haunted. The APTN television program “The Other Side” even stopped in a couple of years ago to check on the popular bar’s haunted history.

Town of

Redvers

R

edvers, located along the Red Coat Trail, at the intersections of Hwy 13 and Hwy 8 is a tight knit community, which enjoys a history of French and British settlers who were later joined by Danish people arriving from Denmark and from the United States. Simply look for the giant RCMP officer atop his mount on the west side of town and you know you’ve arrived. Gaining its name from General Sir Redvers Buller who commanded the British forces during the Boer War, the community has mostly revolved around agriculture although the petroleum industry has also been a large part of its identity in more recent years as well. Redvers is home to a variety of businesses and service groups, which are very community minded. Although other communities have drama groups and enjoy the arts, Redvers has made itself into a hub of entertainment. The community continues to host musical artists, the Redvers and District Music Festival for students from the southeast to compete in, and much more. Additionally the community boasts a wide range of recre-

ational facilities including ball diamonds, a swimming pool, and golf course during the summer. In the winter curling and skating are a big part of the community.

Town of

KIPLING K

ipling was named for the great English author, Rudyard Kipling. Rudyard Kipling passed through Saskatchewan and Regina on October 4, 1907. The story is that he passed through his namesake while on the train to Regina. Kipling was settled during the great Migration of settlers coming from Britain, Hungary, Germany and Scandinavian countries with the offer of free land. Its geographical location made Kipling a CNR divisional point in the early 1900’s. This included a roundhouse and CNR station for both passengers and trains alike. In turn, this evolved the town into a trading center for early pioneers to build homes, churches, schools and businesses of which our community still beneits from today. Kipling’s lapel pin was the product of a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Committee in 1989. The scroll and feather pen, both common writing tools of the 1900’s signify the connection to Rudyard Kipling. The paperclip was added in 2006 to commemorate the Red Paperclip story. Kipling is home of the famous Red Paper Clip house traded to Kyle MacDonald of www.oneredpaperclip.com. Bienfait

Locomotive 3522 is located in Bienfait. It used to play an integral role in the coal industry in southeast Saskatchewan.

B

ienfait is a community that has a rich history and a bright future. The town is located about a dozen kilometres east of Estevan on Highway 18. The community was incorporated as a village on April 16, 1912, and became a town on March 1, 1957. The Estevan Riot of Sept. 29, 1931, might be the moment the town is best-known for. Striking coal miners marched from Bienfait to Estevan to draw attention to their cause. The RCMP confronted them in Estevan and attempted to break up the process. Violence broke out and police opened fire on the miners, killing three of them. The strike and the riot have been covered in a number of books and other historical materials. Modern-day Bienfait is home to 762 people, according to last year’s federal census. Many of them work in Estevan, but the community also has a number of businesses that provide employment for the town’s people and services for residents. Strong links continue to exist with coal mining. Many people are employed in the mining industry, while others have found employment in the oil patch. The town also has a modern school for kindergarten to Grade 8 students that was renovated about 15 years ago. The arena and curling rink are busy during the winter months with games that attract people of all ages. The Bienfait Coalers senior hockey team won an unprecedented five straight Big Six Hockey League titles from 2011 to 2015. A new swimming pool opened in July 2015, and has proven to be a popular attraction for residents. Each year Bienfait hosts Canada Day celebrations that attract people from throughout the area. A parade makes its way through the streets of the town. Activities take place throughout the day, and the festivities are capped with an impressive fireworks display. The Bienfait Coalfields Historical Society Museum is open in the spring and summer each year, and attracts visitors with displays of coal mining equipment from 1895 to the present. Bienfait also keeps a link to its past with Locomotive 3522, a retired steam engine that used to roll through the town and was used in coal mining. The locomotive is on display in the town’s west edge. A documentary, Locomotives of Bienfait, premiered in Estevan last November. It depicts the history of Locomotive 3522 and two others engines that used to play an important role in mining. A Go Fund Me page has been set up for the restoration of Locomotive 3522.

orth Portal is an important community for the trade relationship that exists between Canada and the U.S. The village has a population of 115 residents, according to the most recent federal census data. But its location on the Canada-U.S. border makes it a key community. After all, the port of entry at North Portal is the busiest in Saskatchewan, and one of the most important in the country, thanks to the volume and the value of the goods that travel across the border crossing on a daily basis. As such, North Portal is home to a Duty Free store, where people can pick up a variety of goods before entering the U.S. North Portal embodies the co-operation that exists between Canada and the U.S. Portal, North Dakota, is located on the U.S. side of the border, and residents of North Portal and Portal frequently cross back and forth to make use of the services in the other community. The clubhouse is in the U.S., the first eight holes are in Canada, and the tee box for the par-3 ninth hole is also north of the border. LANDMARK BUILDINGS IN WEYBURN There a number of important heritage and historical properties in and around Weyburn for people to check out. The Weyburn Court House is an important landmark building at the end of Third Street on Prairie Avenue. Constructed in 1928, it was designed by provincial architect Maurice Sharon, who designed the Court House to be an architectural landmark befitting the centre of a prosperous, wheat-growing district.

The Weyburn Security Bank, housed in the building above at the corner of Third Street and Souris Avenue, was the only Saskatchewan chartered bank to operate in this Province. The bank functioned from 1910 until 1931, and had 32 branch offices at one time. As the head office, the design of this building reflects traditional bank institutional features to give the building a sense of security and prominence. The bank was purchased by the The Imperial Bank of Canada in 1931. The Imperial Bank of Canada merged with the The Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1961 becoming the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), as it remains to this day.

The W.O. Mitchell House, located on Sixth Street, was the residence of the famous Canadian author. Bill was born in Weyburn in March of 1914, second eldest son of O.S. Mitchell, druggist, who arrived in Weyburn in 1903. “Who Has Seen the Wind”, Bill’s first novel (1947) was based on his childhood memories of the prairie where he grew up. Bill has become one of Canada’s best known writers. This residence was owned by the Mitchell’s until 1971.

Weyburn’s Therapeutic Animal Park has been operating for nearly 35 years, bringing together the beauty and variety of nature with the joy and curiosity of childhood. Visiting the park can be nostalgic for some and it can be a new adventure for others. The park is open to the public yearround, with the animal displays changing depending on weather conditions. There

is no charge to visit the animals or for families to romp on the play structures. Since 2005, the park has been located just west of the Tatagwa View nursing home and prior to that, it was located within the former Souris Valley Regional Care Centre grounds. Cugnet Centre -- attached to the Weyburn Comprehensive School, located at 629 King Street. The Cugnet Centre is a multi-purpose indoor facility. First opened in May of 2014, it serves as a concert, theatre, and convention hall, usable for community events and by the school. The facility features a stage and retractable seating.

Plans to construct a new performing arts facility were drafted as early as 1998 by a steering committee known as the Weyburn and District Performing Arts Society. The project was revived in late-2008 as part of a further series of renovations at the school. The Performing Arts Society was renamed itself the Weyburn Triple C Centre Corp. With a $1 million donation, the Cugnet family acquired naming rights to the theatre, which became known as the Kenney & JoAnne Cugnet Centre. The newly renovated facility (which included the Cugnet Centre and the Colleen Weimer Hall) was opened to the public for the first time until May 2014. The new wing also incorporates a new cafeteria kitchen, a new band room, and a new entryway for the school.

SPORTS AND RECREATION Recreation services and cultural experiences are the foundation of care and make the most of the lives of the people in their community. Weyburn offers many recreation activities throughout the year

Crescent Point Place -- located at 327 Mergens Street NW. Weyburn Colosseum was built in 1960 and has had several renovation and expansion projects done to enhance the facility. With the renovation process, naming rights of the facility were purchased by Crescent Point Energy Trust in 2008, and the arena is now known as Crescent Point Place. Crescent Point Place is an excellent facility for all types of activities. This facility has a regulation size ice surface (85 feet by 200 feet), seating capacity of 1,475, standing area, private

boxes, and viewing from the lobby. Within Crescent Point Place is a multipurpose room which over looks the ice surface with a capacity of 63 people and has a dimension of 16 feet by 40 feet, a great place to hold meetings. Crescent Point Place is home to the Weyburn Red Wings (SJHL) and the Southern Range Gold Wings (SFMAAHL). Tom Zandee Sports Arena -- attached to Crescent Point Place. The Tom Zandee Sports Arena was built in 1982 as a second ice facility, with an ice surface area of 85 feet by 190 feet. Both facilities are utilized year round for a variety of activities and events. During the biennial Oil and Gas Show, Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena are used for indoor displays. Weyburn Curling Rink -- located in the Weyburn Exhibition Grounds The Weyburn Curling Club was established in 1903, although most of the curling in those days was done on the river. The original building was first located on Bison Avenue where the Weyburn Public Library is now situated. In 1962 the curling club moved to its existing location on the Weyburn fair-

grounds. The building was constructed by the Weyburn Agricultural Society and is still owned by them today. The curling club rents the facility from the Agricultural Society from October 1 until April 15 each year. In the 1970’s this thriving curling club had over 700 members. As times have changed, membership has slowly declined and today the membership is approximately half the 700 members from the 1970’s. Since the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the curling club has hosted every Saskatchewan Curling Association sanctioned southern or provincial playdown. The proceeds from these playdowns has helped pay for extensive renovations to the curling club lobby, kitchen, lounge and ice surface area.

WELCOME TO WILLOW BUNCH

stablished in 1870, Willow Bunch is one of Saskatchewan’s oldest settlements. The town is located on highway 36 south of the Trans Canada highway, forty minutes from the Canada-U.S. boundary near the Big Muddy Badlands in Southern Saskatchewan. Castle Butte and the Big Muddy Badlands are located a short drive to the south east of Willow Bunch. The popular Castle Butte is a 70-metre high (200 ft) sandstone and clay formation located in the heart of the Big Muddy Badlands. Its prominent position on the lat valley loor made it a landmark that was used for navigation by Indians, early surveyors, North-West Mounted Police patrols, outlaws and settlers. McGillis House is a typical Metis house built in 1890 by the Alexandre ‘Catchoo’ McGillis’ family. Located at St Victor (18 km from Willow Bunch), it is typical of the Metis homes of that era. It is built from poplar poles, willow stakes, clay plaster, and prairie grass. In those days, the windows were scraped antelope skins and the doors made of shaved hides of the buffalo. The museum vividly recalls the past. Hanging on rusty pegs on the exterior are saddles and bridles of an earlier era, kerosene lanterns, traps, and a badger skin on a stretcher board. Above the door is a feathered buffalo skull, with horns intact. Inside are many pioneer relics, hand-made furniture, an ancient spinning wheel, and old photos of pioneer times. Outside you will see a wooden-tub bed, hand-operated washing machine, a grindstone, and a buckboard. The Willow Bunch golf course is located in the scenic Jean Louis Legare Regional Park, just a short distance to the southwest of Willow Bunch. The park is set in dense trees, and boasts a large picnic and play area making it a great place for family reunions or other gatherings. You can also hike the great coulees, part of the Big Muddy Valley - also a great place for camera buffs and bird watchers. Pets are permitted in the Park when on a leash.

Édouard J. Beaupré, The Willow Bunch Giant Joseph Edouard Beaupré, born January 9, 1881, in Willow Bunch was the eldest son of Gaspard Beaupré and Florestine Piché, and is one of the most famous local residents. His father measured 5’ 8” and his mother 5’ 4”. At birth he weighed in at nine pounds, and seemed normal in every respect. His godparents were the illustrious Jean Louis Légaré, and Florestine Piché. When he was three, he suddenly started growing in an alarming way. So much so that at age nine, his height measured 6’, at 12 years 6’ 6”, and at 17 years he had reached 7’ 1”. At 17 years old, he could lift an 800-pound horse. In 1901, when he measured 7’ 9”, he apparently lifted a 900-pound weight and fractured a leg. After that he was very prudent to never lifted more than that. Around 21 years old when he chose the life of the circus, he measured 7’ 11” and weighed 365 pounds. His neck measured 21 inches in circumference, and his hands 12 and one half inch from the wrist to inger tips. Edouard Beaupré died July 3, 1904, with his body immediately transported to the St. Louis morgue where an autopsy revealed a tumor on his pituitary gland.
