PLANET
VERTILUX
Recycled Fabrics
PLANET is a full colored, motif free, semi translucent fabric, ideal to match every decoration style. Why is this fabric different? PLANET is made of 100% recycled PET. PET is the principal ingredient used to produce bottles for water and other beverages, packaging for detergents and pharmaceutical products. After its use, commonly the PET bottles and containers are thrown away and become rubbish, clogging our cities. We believe that the environment deserves better, and we have found a way to use the discarded bottles and containers... We are committed to do our part in contributing towards a healthier environment, and are using recycled PET materials in the development of longer life cycle products, which also includes fabrics.
One square meter (1.196 sq yards) of PLANET is made of 6 (1.5 liters each) thrown away water bottles!!!
That is why we named this fabric PLANET. PLANET is antibacterial, has a Sanitized® finished, and holds the valuable European Oeko-Tex 100 International certification for “use of non harmful substances”, making it ideal for the most demanding requirements. Rolls are available in 106" width, in six popular colors: Off White, Ivory, Beige, Chocolate, Light Gray and Black.

contribution...
Renaissance makes sustainability an integral part of interior design and offers consumers a unique way of covering windows with a unique and appealing, regenerated product made of 100% recycled cotton. Why recycled cotton? Cotton is the world’s most resource-demanding fiber. Cotton, also, is a demanding cultivation and relies heavily on fertilizers and agro -chemicals. 25% of the world’s insecticides, for example, go to cotton farming. Where does the cotton for our Renaissance fabric come from? The yarn we use in Renaissance, comes totally from the clothing industry where 20 to 40% of fabrics used in the confection end as scraps on the cutting room floor. Those scraps, after being recycled, washed and spun, become the yarn used to weave Renaissance.

It’s Showtime! Learn, share and let’s grow together
t’s Showtime in Chicago! I hope you will be joining us at VISION12 in one of my favorite cities: Chicago! I had the pleasure of growing up on the South Side (yes, you know the reputation!), going to Mother McCauley High School and returning after I finished college to work at the Chicago Tribune, where I began my career in media. Chicago has changed quite a bit since those years, in a wonderful way. I visit friends quite often and marvel at the great architecture, fabulous restaurants, boutiques and museums. Needless to say, I’m excited to spend a week in Chicago during VISION12. Just before I sat down to write this editorial, I had the pleasure of informing the winners of our Envision Design and Ingenuity Workroom Competition of their awards—it’s probably the most enjoyable thing I do all year. Of course, they are all thrilled and looking forward to our Awards Ceremony,

SHOW REVIEW
R+T 2012 registers record numbers
What the May Bring every three years the international exterior and interior window treatment industry meets up in Stuttgart, Germany for R+T, a show dedicated to new product introductions for awnings, motorization, lift systems, exterior shutters and gates and yes, interior shades and blinds. Given that the last R+T show took place in 2009, as the world was still trying to assess the impact of the international financial crisis, it’s no surprise that the mood on the show floor was uniformily positive. Attendee traffic was up five percent over 2009, and more of the visitors came from overseas than in previous years. There was also more for them to see, with the number of exhibitors up almost eight percent over the previous session. Green materials and energysaving products and systems were two key themes found in many of the new product introductions. “R+T 2012 was our best show ever,” said Kenneth Clayborne, president of TOP Window Covering. “The show was upbeat, everyone was looking for new, fresh and quality products. I was most impressed with the turn out of U.S. and South America companies.” Travis Storch, general manager/director of sales and marketing for Storch International Inc., had a similar response. Storch, which represents the Wintec Korea line in the U.S., Canada and Latin America, noted that one of 12
| VISION
TOP Window Coverings, based in Holland, MI, launched the Edisse fabric collection at the show, a line that includes two alternating panels of sheer and opaque fabrics on a single roller shade. It is a new addition to the company’s Top Twinlight line.
the most popular new introductions was its Viewmax system, which allows fabricators to make six different shade types using a variety of fabrics, therefore reducing the need for inventory. “We continue to see aggressive growth in Latin markets like Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina,” said Storch, “other growth areas are Korea, Japan and India. The United States and Canada
continue to recover and we could see signs of this from our meetings with many large U.S. and Canadian-based companies. They feel a renewed sense of confidence in the market, and seem to be more willing to start taking risks and differentiating themselves. This is different than 2009-2011 when these same companies seemed to be huddled up (like all of us) waiting to see who makes the next move.“

R+T 2012 served as a formal announcement of the new relationship between Almedahls and Rollease. The two companies shared a stand and in the U.S., Rollease will now act as the distributor and agent for select Almedahls fabrics. Almedahls was one of several companies to introduce a range of green and eco-materials, including several new fabrics made with Poly Lactid Acid (PLA), an extruded polymer fiber made from corn. Coming from a natural renewable resource, it reduces fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions and is naturally biodegradable. Compared to other polymerisation processes, the PLA production uses about 60% less fossil fuel energy. Both Almedahls and Vertilux introduced several new fabrics using PET. The Planet line of fabrics from Vertilux uses about six water bottles (1.5 liters) for every square meter of finish fabric. The end result is a plain, semi translucent fabric, available in six neutral colors suitable for an interior style. Planet is one of two Vertilux fabrics that have earned the OekoTex Standard 100 label. The other is Renaissance, made of 100% recycled cotton. Renaissance´s cotton comes from the clothing industry where 20% to 40% of the fabric ends up as scraps on the cutting room floor. Renaissance is made out of these waste materials. The remnants are sorted according to type and color; then cut into strips of equal lengths. These strips are then reduced back down to fiber and the recovered fiber is then spun into new yarn for Renaissance. At R+T, Coulisse introduced a range of new fabrics divided into four different collections: nature prints, micro-fashion, graphics. and Trevira CS with a natural look. All fabrics are suitable for roller blinds with most also working for panel and vertical blinds. Other new introductions included an updated collection of matte-finish wood blinds in seven natural colors. For additional impact there are four Duo options, where the edges of the slats are finished with a second color, an elegant and sophisticated detail. And, on the cord-issue front, Coulisse showed its version of a break-away chain, a two-part mechanism connecting the operating chain to a second chain. When the six kilogram weight limit is hit inside the chain loop, the two parts break loose immediately, ensuring the lower chain to fall down to the floor. The device can be reused by simply clicking the parts back together and reattaching it to the chain. Systems like this are necessary for those companies looking to expand their business in the U.S., like Coulisse, which recently opened its Miami showroom. TOP: Almedahls showcased its new roller blind fabrics in four moods—Living Room, Studio, Factory and Farm—all dealing with the fundamental thinking of respect for the environment. Each mood highlighted a different way of approaching the theme: taking care of old things, re-using materials, etc. The burn-out design Martha is a contemporary interpretation of old jacquard punchcards and was shown as part of the Factory theme. BELOW: Planet is a recycled polyster, derived from PET bottles that was introduced by Vertilux at the show.

SHOW REVIEW
Maison&Objet Winter 2012
Looking for the Signs of or every session of the show, the Maison&Objet Observatory, a group of trend research professionals, chooses a theme and creates three large-scale trend vignettes around this theme. For the winter 2012 session the theme was ‘Crazy’, the main message being to let go of the restraint and discipline that has been the de facto attitude since the financial crisis of 2008—to let imagination flourish again, to have fun. The sobriety that swept through the design industry needs to be leavened with whimsy and humor, inso-
lence and irony, It’s not a full-fledged return to the bling-bling extravagance of the pre-crash world, just a push toward a more relaxed, playful approach to design. The sense of fun and fantasy never completely disappeared from the design industry post-crash, it just went underground. But vibrant colors, imaginative patterns and the flounces and flourishes of a more exuberant design style are more evident.
ket. For now the most predominate mood is still that of stylish decorum, a tasteful elegance that needs no explanation and therefore, is easy to sell to a still uneasy consumer. But even within the narrowed guidelines of what is today’s good taste, some peeks of this direction are coming through. A mix of rough and luxe, a renewed need for shimmer and sparkle, and the pure, old-fashioned romance of beautiful florals all point the way to a looser, more relaxed approach to design. V
However, fun and flamboyant design still remains a small piece of the mar-
The ‘Crazy’ theme was divided into three distinctly different trend presentations, each of which deals with certain aspects of the theme. Art'keting focuses on the hyper-personalization of décor, with the home becoming a work of art, and each individual its creator. The overall look of this presentation was an elegant jumble that was both ironic and luxurious. Dream Box addressed the disconcerted, disconcerting age we live in by exploring the strangeness of imaginary worlds. The presentation featured optical illusions, outsized objects, and other such distortions to both disturb and bewitch. Sweet Freaks was about shaking up a world caught between being too orderly and unhinged. Eccentricity, wild flights of fancy and offbeat whimsy lead to design that experiments with curious overlaps of the unusual and the refined.

This session it was easier to spot saturated colors and more imaginative patterns. Clockwise from top left: After All from Elitis is part of the Kandy collection and was inspired by indian street art. The Catalina Estrada collection from Cordonne includes bold borders, interesting all-overs and several strking murals, all in lively saturated colors. Tango is a ruffled curtain panel from the Ulf Mortiz line, offered in scalet, purple, black or ivory. Swarm is a custom printed velvet from Corita Rose, a British designer known for her interesting take on patterns.

SHINE: Metallics never truly go out of style, but in tough financial times, they tend to go more soft and subtle. This is still the case although there are some signs of sparkle on the horizon. Clockwise from top left: Albery from Cole & Son is a faux antiqued mirror wallpaper with a subtle etched pattern available in six shades. Tracy Kendall’s large sequin wallpaper brings a mood of soft, shimmering festivity to any room. Kanchi is the first Indian company ever to be invited to the prestigious Scenes d’interieur hall at Maison & Objet. One of the many beautiful lines on display was this collection of pillows lavishly embellished with pearls. The pearls can be dyed to match almost any color and custom designs for the patterning are welcome. MM Designs introduced a line of fabric woven with copper, giving the look of liquid metal, available in eight colors in plains, florals and geometrics.

ROUGH LUXE: Many companies are still hesitant of ‘luxury’—not sure what it now means or how to sell it. A comman way of getting around this is to undercut the ‘luxury’ with something more rough and tumble, more basic. Clockwise from top left: Etro showcases its luxurious silk pillows and fur throw on an uncushioned bench, set on a concrete flooring. La Fibule contrasts plain waxed wood with fur cushions. Induflux tames a bouquet of laser-cut flowers by using matte-finish stainless. Working with drfitwood, Bleu Nature transforms ornate chandeliers and frames into something almost humble.

FLORABUNDA: Seemingly overnight beautiful bouquets of lush watercolor blossoms have sprung to life. Clockwise from top left: Voyage is a Scottish firm with a lovely collection of florals along with woven coordinates. BlueBellGrey was one of the first companies spotted working in this trend, over a year ago, and its collection of digitally printed watercolor fabrics are still among the best. Kimono Blossoms was one of several watercolor florals to be introduced at Designers Guild. At the Nobilis showroom, a cart full of watercolor florals pointed the way to further treasures inside.

Tobi Fairley on Instagram
I’m Officially Obsessed With Isn’t technology great? Whether you’re in line at the airport or sitting on your living room sofa, you can turn to your laptop, tablet or even your phone and find out what’s happening with both the people and brands you love. That’s one of the reasons why I am obsessed with the Instagram app. ¶ If you aren’t familiar with Instagram, it’s like Pinterest (highly visual) meets Facebook (you follow your friends or brands you love) meets Twitter (you can share brief captions and use hash tags). One of my favorite things is that it allows you to share a ‘snapshot’ of your day in just a few seconds. So, you take a picture of what’s happening in your world, write a brief caption, post it and it is instantly shared with all of your followers via the app’s newsfeed. ¶ Additionally, you can link the app to your Facebook or Twitter account to share images there, too. If someone isn’t following you on Instagram, there are several outlets you can use to share these images. Isn’t that brilliant? ¶ Not only do I love the sharing feature, but I also love using the different filters to give each photo a personalized look. You can choose everything from a black and white or sepia version which gives a vintage feel, to a more modern, saturated look. The options are endless and I must admit, it can be a bit addictive.V

Designs for Modern Living Creative contemporary for the window Interview by Deb Barrett
ometimes it can seem as if window treatment designs are trapped in amber… swags and jabots originally styled for chateaux, now forced into the confines of ranch homes. So many changes in how we live, but so few of them reflected in design for the window, which is why it is a pleasure and privilege to have Erik Bruce as a keynote speaker at Vision 12 in Chicago.
the studio open and I became creative director and principal designer. I managed her studio for five years and was the principal designer of the firm for eight years after her death. Our business model was similar to when at a fashion house, a principal designer continues the founder’s vision—a recent example being Sarah Burton taking over the design at Alexander McQueen.
Deb Barrett: How did you get started in interior design?
DB: And now?
Erik Bruce: I was working with designers and costume shops sewing and sourcing for theatrical productions on Broadway in New York. A friend of mine introduced me to Mary Bright in 1998, who was truly the first innovator of her kind in the field of curtain design. At the time I was doing the millinery for The Lion King on Broadway. She hired me to sew leather wind block panels for the entry of the Mercer Hotel in New York City. We coined the term ‘Curtaineer’ and I still remember we used a herd of cattle in each panel! (Sorry vegetarians) Our relationship grew very organically from that first project. She was moving her studio from the East Village and I stayed on to help; we started collaborating more and eventually I became her assistant and we were designing and creating together on most projects. When we found out about her illness, we decided to keep 28

EB: Last fall, I decided to start my own studio. It was time; I needed to try something for myself. I have four full time and four part time employees. Most of my work is specified by architects, but I also do work for interior designers. Most of my time is spent working with our clients. I am big on the interactive aspects of the process. Coming from a theatrical background I am very collaborative by nature, although I still do some sewing. I am especially involved in the sampling.
happens between the lighting and the material being lit. For example, in a more recent project for the Mercer we did draperies that have a series of vertical and horizontal seams using several different sheers. The seams and materials created lines and shadows and set the mood in the room. Something that we would normally hide became the design element. DB: How do you identify yourself? (i.e. designer, architect, collaborator, strategist/problem solver) EB: I was trained as a designer of scenery and costumes. That field also taught me to solve problems quickly and efficiently. My emphasis has always been fine arts. I earned my MFA at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. I also studied art history, which gave me a strong sense of context both in the art world as well as in fashion. I consider myself a designer, but inspired by the process of making things.
DB: Please describe your sense of style. What words or phrases sum up your design aesthetic? EB: Functional, textural and modern. I am most interested in how both natural and artificial light affects textiles and materials. One of my favorite phrases is ‘Don’t hide it—feature it.’ The aspects of stage design—draping, costuming and lighting—are the same as in designing windows. The magic
To divide the multipurpose media room at The New Museum in New York City, Erik, while still at Mary Bright Studio, designed a system to serpentine ceiling-mounted tracks that support layered curtains of colored netting. This creates divisions without resulting in tight, closed-in areas. Though each panel appears to be a single color—blue, yellow or red—each is composed of layers of several different colors, the subtle variations helping to brighten the space. Photograhy: Christopher Lovi.

DB: You are known for developing new inventive solutions for windows. Can you give me one or two examples of your approach to these types of design? EB: I think modern glass buildings are the perfect example. When you walk into a space with all glass elevations, the light and exposure can be overwhelming. I try to create a program or strategy for revealing the views and light. When faced with an entire wall of glass, Roman shades, swags, and valances are pretty much irrelevant. I once designed a window treatment for someone that claimed to hate window treatments. The treatment folded and dropped below the window when they weren’t using it. DB: How do you market expensive custom window design to a client like that, or the many other potential clients who love good design but, as you say, “hate window treatments”? EB: Well, this a bit of an awkward question for me to answer in your magazine, but I am desired for the fact that, what they see in the marketplace for window coverings they don’t want, so they come to me for something else. But in general, building a successful relationship with clients and having lots of back and forth to what will work better is key. It can be a double-edged sword: you sometimes have the desire to contribute when it isn’t wanted, and on the other hand, sometimes you are asked to do more than your ‘role’ to make sure all bases are covered. DB: How does your approach to window treatments differ from most interior designers? EB: There is so much emphasis in our industry on surface design and not the overall concept, so by the time the designer gets to the window they continue that thinking—matching 30
| VISION
the sofa, coordinating patterns—they consider the window just another piece and don’t consider the window interactively in the whole room. I think I am more conscious of what happens to the textile with light behind it as well as in front of it. Designers are focused on the surface details and finishes. I am more concerned with controlling light and how it is filtered into the room. The industry model is that designers specify materials and different headers and maybe the hardware to hang it on. There isn’t as much interaction. How those things are executed can be hugely different and greatly affect the results. You have to be good at the craft. That is the most valuable commodity, plus it’s not easy to shop. I have built relationships with architects and designers. I act as the mediator between them and the client when we put forth new ideas. A big part of my relationship and job is educating the client; when you do they will pay more and you can charge more. DB: What are some of the common mistakes you see designers make in the selection and creation of window fashion designs as it pertains to the entire room design? EB: The most common mistake I think is selecting a textile or treatment before deciding what purpose it serves. I think it’s important to solve the functional aspects first and then get into aesthetics and coordinating with other elements in the room. I also prefer to have some specific requirements to work within rather than a wide open canvas. I find unlimited options overwhelming.
For a contemporary Catskills home Erik created custom hardware that worked with the struts and beams already featured in the room, using all the linear gridwork as inspiration—not something to be hidden or obscured.
WF-VISION.COM | MAR/APR 12 | 31
DB: What do you find most challenging when it comes to designing and creating window fashions? EB: I think the most challenging aspect is the installation. That’s when everything is revealed; just like the grand proscenium curtain in a theatre. That’s when you find out if you used the correct measurements, chose the right fabric, let it hang long enough before cutting, etc. You also have a limited amount of time at that point, so the pressure is on. DB: Best window fashion advice? EB: Less is more. My interest in MidCentury Modernism spurs me to the idea to look for function, keep it simple and focus on materials. Modern architecture relies too much on the simplicity of roller solar shades than
32
| VISION
is necessary or appropriate. It’s a lot more interesting to focus on the harmony of materials through the craft. I compare it to applying hand finished Venetian plaster vs. applying a Ben Moore paint color. There is a different level of finish and execution.
DB: Having a modernist point of view, do you think window coverings ‘belong’ in modern buildings? EB: Yes. Modern architecture is begging for innovative window treatments and materials to work with. As we strive to bring more natural light into the spaces we inhabit, it also becomes necessary to control the light and create privacy when we want it. I think many architects are not interested in anything other than roller shades simply because most work-
rooms don’t use anything other than header tapes in their curtains with way too much fullness. There aren’t enough options on the market for soft treatments. DB: Speaking of materials, do you see any new materials, products or technology that customers will start to insist on? EB: I think there will continue to be a demand for smarter textiles in the window treatment industry. Fabrics with aluminum or steel backing to reflect the sun and reduce heat gain. I also see a trend toward clear acrylic poles and hardware. I love it because it works well in almost any context. It’s almost invisible. Creating custom details is a trait Erik used frequenty in his theater days, and continues to use in his own studio.
DB: Name one of your secret sources. EB: WDavis, LLC. But now it’s not a secret source anymore, is it? It’s the company that makes the metal mesh for Whiting and Davis handbags and jewelry that became very popular in the early ’80s. I once used their stainless steel chain mail for a curtain on the outside of a cast concrete house in California. The client referred to the curtain as her ‘architectural bling’. It glistened in the sunlight. It is also resistant to corrosion from the salty air next to the ocean—they use the same material for shark diving suits.
on my windows right now. I recently moved my business out of my apartment, which left it very empty. Seriously, Redi Shades are a great temporary solution for clients while they are waiting for you to finish their treatments. The white are translucent and the black are blackout. They come with a self adhesive strip at the top. One last tip… mount them directly to clean glass or the frame of the window. That way they won’t damage the wall finish or fall off after a couple of days. V
DB: Have you ever considered doing a collection for the window coverings industry—hardware or shades, for example? EB: I do have plans for that. Stay tuned! However, I am pretty consumed at the moment with my own new studio. After designing in this industry for almost 14 years, I have started my own little laboratory in midtown Manhattan. I am using some of my ideas from custom projects to develop interesting new products. DB: If you could do anything else, what would it be? EB: Art. If I could do anything without worrying about supporting myself, I would create art in whatever media inspired me. It would be even better if it took me to locations and museums all over the world to feed my addiction for travel at the same time. DB: How do you get your creative juices going? EB: Music. I am very inspired by it. All types from classical to jazz to alternative indie rock and electronica. DB: The ‘cobbler’s shoes’ scenario—what is one thing your house needs right now? EB: How did you know? Ok, I have to admit I have paper Redi Shades

Big Ideas to Discover New marketing methods to grow with Contributions by Nicole M. Shields and Bruce Bernstein t one point or another, nearly every business owner dreams of the magic marketing solution—a process, tool or new medium that will drive sales effectively and consistently. Two participants at Vision12 Chicago share their take on new ideas and directions for marketing. Nicole M. Shields: It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the new marketing tools available these days. But especially for professionals in the interior design field, the big thing to remember is really very basic—people do business with people they know, like and trust. You are working in people’s private spaces and their happiness is derived not only from a beautiful end result, but an enjoyable, often collaborative working relationship. Bruce Bernstein: As a small business owner, I think our biggest challenge in business is making sure we stay fresh with marketing, social media and new technologies that can grow our business. One of the questions that I am constantly asking myself and my employees as well as friends and advisors is ‘Where will technology take us in our business?’ NS: My obsession is using what I call sensible marketing strategies to build and grow businesses. What do I mean by Sensible Marketing? Well, it means implementing the right mix of marketing strategies that result in the best return on investment with the least amount of expense. For example, trust and relationships used to be built at networking events, cocktail parties, via print ads, sales calls, referrals, etc. These methods are still being used, but now there are many additional channels available to expand and expedite those relationships. The really good news is that channels such as social media, blogs, email, interactive websites and others actually help reduce the sales cycle time and allow you to begin relationships with more people, simultaneously, than would ever be possible using only traditional methods. BB: The Internet and the new marketing opportunities it has fostered benefits businesses in many ways, but at the same time it has presented a whole new set of issues. Consumers use the internet to challenge you on your pricing, throwing pricing from both big box stores and independents back at you, not understanding that it’s ‘apples to oranges’ pricing. 38

Our response to this has been a mix of tech and non-tech solutions. We’ve increased our prices on drapery labor, thus making our products more expensive when customers shop us. At the same time we’ve created some value opportunities with ‘loss leaders’ such as a free-labor drapery panel program—the customer can choose from select fabrics and pays only for the fabric. We then use social media to showcase these new options and get customer feedback and response. NS: I don’t think anyone should be intimidated by these new social media tools because, at their core, they use the same marketing principles as the traditional methods. Once you master these you’ll find that prospects are nearly sold before you even make contact, shortening your sales cycle. V

BIG IDEAS
Transform Your Business Creative thinking opens up new possibilties by Susan Schultz t’s difficult to turn away from success. When you have a thriving business, grown and nutured by yourself and that you love, it’s tough to imagine a future without that passion and committment in your life. But two women, in two different businesses, both made the hard decision to transform their current successes into something more creative, more risky and utlimately more fulfilling. From Artist to Executive and Back Again Susan Dumas started the Pullits line of decorative tassels for blind and shade cords in 2003, when she noticed the uninspired pulls on her newly purchased blinds. Having already had success in other areas of home fashion product design, she set about creating her own, more decorative pulls, crafted in resin and ceramic. The response was terrific and the line soon grew to dozens of designs with options for trade clients, retail, consumers and manufacturers. However, Dumas eventually knew she wanted to spend more time creating and less time managing. She sold Pullits in 2010 and, although she maintains a close relationship with the company, she is engrossed in her fiber arts business, where she creates unique textile designs and installations for private and retail clients, galleries and museums. As part of that business she also designs and creates custom hand-made tassels. Ribbons, beads and unique findings are the hallmarks of her latest design adventure.
This chic rooster tassel would work just about anywhere— adding a touch of whimsy to an amoire, draped over a chair- or bed-post or on display purely for its own good looks. Custom designs and colorations are available to complement any drapery fabrics.

Forging Relationships When Tammi LeNair realized about five years ago that she could start to tell when bad weather was coming by how stiff her hands would get, she began thinking about a future beyond her drapery workroom. For 20 years LeNair has loved (almost) every aspect of her business—working with beautiful fabrics, designing and hand-stitching unique details and, of course, seeing the pleased and grateful looks on her clients’ faces after the installations were finalized. So she knew whatever new direction she wanted to take L’Interieur LeNair in, she didn’t want to leave some of the best aspects—uniqueness, creativity and inspiration—behind. Her first step in this new direction came three years ago when she launched a line of small, custom-painted finials, scaled to work on sidelights and other narrow or undersized windows. But to launch La Finial, she realized she needed a source for small diameter rods and brackets and turned to Helser Brothers, a supplier she had a good working relationship with, for assistance. Together LeNair and the team at Helser worked through the components so that she was able to offer a full line, although tiny in scale. Her next move came through social networking—she friended Remy Lemoine, a French decorative hardware specialist, on Facebook. The artist in LeNair responded to many of Lemoine’s inventive designs. In January 2009, LeNair went to Paris for the design shows and to meet Lemoine in person and see more of his designs first-hand. A private showing of his “curtain jewelry” enthralled her. Lemoine agreed to let her take a couple Murano glass tiebacks back to the U. S. LeNair had some designers in mind, clients of hers that she knew would respond as passionately as she did to the sculpted hold
backs he presented. (As if all this was exciting enough, ask her to tell you sometime about what happened in the security line at the airport when she was asked to remove the curved glass designs. Fortunately LeNair speaks fluent French!) Positive that designs as creative and unique as Lemoine’s deserved a place in the U.S., LeNair eventually became his U.S. representative, adding more samples, creating a display in the Marketplace Design Center in Philadelphia, Penn., and working with designers to specify from the broader line. LeNair has approached her transition from drapery workroom to supplier gradually. She’s happy with these incremental changes; she’s able to use her new lines in her current designs, and is looking forward to when ‘supplier’ becomes a better definition of her business than ‘workroom’. She notes that being on the other side of the business relationship is challenging. “Being an attendee all these years at the various trade shows, I never gave it much thought as to what the vendors went through to promote their products,” said LeNair. “Now that the tables are turned, wow! There is a lot of Tammi LeNair’s current collection of unique decorative hardware includes her own La Finial line of small-scale hand-painted pieces and Remy Lemoine’s sophisticated modern holdbacks available in cost involved and everyone wants variety of unique materials. She’s developing her latest addition, hand-crafted leather and faux leather door prizes, freebies, you name it. holdbacks based on a bridle, in conjuction with a local craftsman. Mary Elliott Designs, Decorating Den Interiors, Matthews, NC
Working with colors that are already in place, or using color to transform a space is a key aspect of any interior designer’s repertoire. These projects demonstrate how much color influences every interior.

| VISION
After seven years of living with a bland peach-hued bedroom, the clients wanted a warm, restful, romantic room to use as a true retreat. Most of the furnishings would stay the same, but by incorporating a soft gold and green palette, the entire feeling of the room became more soothing and welcoming. Embroidered silk swags softened the broad expanse of stark white shutters, adding the finishing touch needed to tie new and old together.

Patrice Hawkins, Hawkins Design Systems, Matthews, NC The clients for this home married two years ago, combining furnishings and accessories in a new home. The paint on walls was builder bland, the windows were bare and the the furniture truly couldn't not work together. So the goal was to create a coordinated interior that brought life and color to their home—and they specifically asked for a mood that evoked the Mediterranean seashore. Unlike most interior design projects, this one began with picking out fabric for the window treatments‌all the other aspects of the this room and the connecting rooms were designed around this selection. Because she loved bright blues, while his favorites were greens, gold and reds, the chosen fabric incorporated all of these colors. The clients made it clear that they loved their back yard and wanted to enhance their views of the woods so the window treatment had to frame the window without blocking the view; fortunately there were no privacy or sun issues to deal with. A custom painted wallpaper with the look of a stone wall brings the feeling of the Mediterranean seashore into the room. The moldings were painted an off white and to allow them to stand out, the ceiling was painted a light tan, accentuating the molding and drawing attention to the top treatment in the room.

Would you be surprised if this unit controls the draperies too?

Julie Meyers, Decorating Den Interiors, Waverly, IA It’s a major challenge to update a bathroom without being able to change the tile, in this case a dated cerluen blue. So the plan for this bathroom was to bring new design elements into the room while minimizing the visual impact of the blue tile. The window treatment was one of the key factors; making the window a focal point draws attention away from the wall tile. The design of a curved, skirted cornice and natural woven Roman shade, both of which lend interesting shape and texture to this otherwise hard-edged space, draw attention to the window. A beaded fringe on the hem of the shade further incorporates featured colors of soft aqua, pistachio green and chocolate brown, helping to tie the new design elements in with the tile.

Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward-Woods, Decorating Den Interiors, Stone Mountain, GA The client requested window treatments that were funky and unique. A traditional box swag was given a new twist with an oversized medallion mounted onto a fabric covered cornice and placed just above the top of the window treatment. The purple crinkled fabric of the main window treatment was contrasted with a silver satin fabric and jabots complete the look.

Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward-Woods, Decorating Den Interiors, Stone Mountain, GA The client wanted to warm up their dining room. They wanted to keep the existing wall color and all of their existing furniture. But the round table in the long rectangular room appeared off balance and the untreated windows added to the starkness of the room. Simple panels were added to the wall of windows. A silk satin turquoise fabric was chosen to soften the chocolate colored walls. Hardware in a champagne finish was chosen to incorporate the mirrored credenza. A two-inch band of bronze silk was added to the top of each goblet pleat.
