Last October nearly 80 public high school teams from across Massachusetts showed up at WGBH’s Brighton studios to take High School Quiz Show’s 100-question entrance exam. The top-scoring 16 teams advanced to compete in Season 3 of our popular academic battle of the brains, hosted by Billy Costa. Now we’re down to the final eight teams, which this month will face off in a blistering round of quarterfinals you won’t want to miss (page 8). “This is our most competitive year yet,” says WGBH’s Hillary Wells, executive producer. “Schools throughout the Commonwealth have established teams that are preparing specifically for High School Quiz Show.” WGBH has responded in kind—working in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which has endorsed the series, and The Princeton Review to add more difficult and nuanced questions, many of them derived from the state’s Advanced Placement curriculum. But this is more than just an academic competition: it’s a celebration of what’s happening in education in our state. “There are so many bright, dedicated and committed students who are doing really well,” Hillary says. “These are stories the media rarely covers. WGBH created High School Quiz Show to showcase these students, to celebrate what they’re doing and to rally schools and communities around them…and that’s what’s happening. It’s very exciting.” By extension, we’re also shining a spotlight on the talented teachers who devote countless extra hours to coaching their teams to compete on the show, among them Natick High School teacher Richard Geckle. “These are great kids, great students,” he says. “I’ve taught them all. Helping them prepare for High School Quiz Show has actually been one of the highlights of my teaching career.” Get in on the action and fun, root for your favorite teams and then mark your calendar for next month’s finals culminating in the state championship, Sunday, May 20, at 6:30pm on WGBH 2. Celebrating Dickens

WGBH’s Masterpiece Classic celebrates one of the victorian era’s greatest writers with two new installments. Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, the battered orphan boy who rises from blacksmith’s apprentice to gentleman under the patronage of a mysterious benefactor, who assures him of “great expectations.” Gillian Anderson, David Suchet and Ray Winstone star. The Mystery of Edwin Drood, an adaptation and completion of Charles Dickens’ last novel—left unﬁnished at the halfway mark at his death—is a psychological thriller about a provincial choirmaster’s obsession with 17-year-old Rosa Bud and the lengths to which he will go to attain her. Grand Coulee was more than a dam. It was a proclamation. In the wake of the Great Depression, America turned from private enterprise to public works—not simply to provide jobs, but to restore faith. Grand Coulee played a central role in transforming the Northwest; it was the largest hydroelectric power-producing facility in the world when completed in March 1941. But the dam wasn’t all good news: it prevented access to one of the greatest salmon rivers in the world and contributed to the cultural decline of native people along the Columbia River for whom salmon was a key resource. WGBH’s American Experience explores how the tension between technological achievement and environmental impact hangs over the project’s legacy. WGBH presents two films in remembrance of the Holocaust. A Film Unfinished offers an examination of a newly discovered reel from an infamous Nazi propaganda film that exposes how the Reich manufactured scenes of life inside the Warsaw Ghetto. Inheritance tells the moving story of Monika Hertwig, the daughter of mass murderer Amon Goeth, who has spent her life trying to come to terms with her “inheritance.” Hertwig seeks out Helen Jonas, who is one of the few living eyewitnesses to Goeth’s unspeakable brutality. The women’s raw, emotional meeting unearths terrible truths and lingering questions about how the actions of our parents can continue to ripple through generations. Radio Spotlight Radio Journalist and Storyteller Phillip Martin Award-winning journalist Phillip Martin believes in the power of radio to convey the “magic of storytelling.” “You’re not just hearing a story, your imagination is activated and you’re seeing it,” Martin says. As senior reporter for 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio, Martin exposes listeners to stories that otherwise would remain untold—from human trafﬁcking to homelessness. Last fall his stories helped earn him WGBH’s Margret and Hans Rey/Curious George Producership for 2011–12. WGBH’s Matt Roy recently spoke with Martin about his background, his work and his approach to reporting.

Q A

Why journalism as a career?

I knew a long time ago that I wanted to tell stories. It goes back to the struggling neighborhood in Detroit where I grew up and the characters and people I saw who, if they were part of a regular news story, would have been made out to be one gigantic stereotype. When in reality, they were these extraordinary personalities—a lot of them humorous, many of them tragic. So I wanted to tell the stories of my neighborhood and others like it. It was either going to be through journalism or the theater. With journalism, you reach a much larger audience.

Q A

How do you avoid stereotypes in your reporting? The key to my journalism, and something I learned many years ago, is that you have to embrace complexity. Very few things are as simple as they look, and understanding that helps you sidestep your own prejudices. The beauty of WGBH is that we have an editorial team that takes the time to tell stories. That’s not to say we don’t have one-minute stories on the air, but even in those instances we ﬁnd nuance and make the reporting about more than just “he said, she said.”

Occupy Boston was the focus of intense media scrutiny last fall. How did you approach that story? I wanted to look at how the Occupy move ment’s credibility was being eroded by the public perception that its ranks were ﬁlled with drug users, etc. My question was, “How might they

What are the types of stories that you like reporting? I’m passionate about social justice, whether it’s related to human trafﬁcking, or the war on drugs or the use of DNA as a way of verifying a person’s guilt or innocence. Those are the types of issues that I’m attracted to.

“The key to my journalism, and something I learned many years ago, is that you have to embrace complexity.” improve their public relations?” I give our editorial director Ted Canova credit for reframing it as “What would Don Draper (from the TV show Mad Men) do?” Through this lens, I collected feedback from local ad executives. I spoke to people at the encampment. It was about trying to understand the humanity of individuals within the movement’s ranks. I felt it was important to point out that Occupy Boston, at least as it was originally constituted, included teachers and ironworkers, students and professors. It wasn’t just a bunch of “crazy hippies.”

Your series about a homeless man named Bruce is another example focus ing on an individual to better under stand a group. Precisely. It takes a real, live human being and his or her multidimensional self in order for us to see that they’re not a caricature. Bruce is someone who I’d seen on the streets of Cambridge off and on for a long time, and I struck up a conversation with him. I discovered a remarkable individual whose story was not being told. He’s a Vietnam veteran who has lived on a bench outside a café for 10 years. It is his artwork that is particularly intriguing, but also his wealth of knowledge. That I was able to pursue this story is a tribute to 89.7.

You did an in-depth series on human trafficking. What surprised you and is your work ongoing? The most surprising thing was how extraor dinarily difficult it is for law enforcement, and certainly for journalists, to find victims in a trade that probably involves about 25 million people worldwide. And that says something about both the efficacy of the traffickers and about the fear that exists among those who are trafficked. In the coming year, there will be fairly extensive followup on some of the issues we raised in the original reporting.

Q A

How is investigative reporting different from day-to-day news coverage? First of all, it takes a lot more time. There are several aspects to investigative journalism. There’s the sexy aspect: what you see, what you hear, the ﬁnal result. And then there’s the grind, the research. There are a lot of levels of research: actual reporting, of course, developing a huge reservoir of contacts, statistical and demographic research, and looking at records.

What’s your view of 89.7 WGBH’s role in the news and media landscape? We have great potential to make a huge impact on journalism in Boston and New England, and we’re well on our way to doing that. We have a very talented staff and the ability to combine the resources of radio and television. We also have a vast archive that we’re beginning to integrate into our coverage on a more consistent basis. Without history, we often miss context. Our archives allow us to give listeners a fuller picture and a deeper understanding of issues. Honesty and integrity: key values people claim to seek in political leaders. In fact, research indicates that “integrity” is the single most important quality candidates can possess—even more important than their position on a speciﬁc issue. But the evidence is clear: leaders and candidates, both state and national, often fall well short of such expectations. WGBH Radio recently joined forces with Public Radio International (PRI) and a select group of pubic radio stations from around the country to participate in “The State Integrity Investigation,” a $1.5 million public collaboration designed to expose practices that undermine trust in state capitals—and to spotlight states that are doing things right. (Funding for this wide-ranging project comes from three philanthropic groups: The Omidyar Network, The Rita Allen Foundation and The Rockefeller Family Fund.) Earlier this year, Ted Canova, WGBH Radio’s executive editor for news, traveled to cold, snowy Minneapolis to meet with PRI and our other editorial partners. Over two days he heard brieﬁngs from researchers who had gathered background material and hard data involving the undermining of trust in state capitals. Over the next several months you will hear reports informed by this data. How does Massachusetts measure up? How different is the Commonwealth compared to the other 49 states? “People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” —Rogers “The Rajah” Hornsby, Sr. This year, we celebrate a number of centennial anniversaries, and we’re marking many of these milestones in music with our special “Trail of ’12” programs. Fenway Park opened in 1912, with the inaugural pitch tossed out on April 20. The Sox went on to win the World Series that year, and then won several more until the 1919 trade of Babe Ruth in the off-season brought on the infamous “Curse of the Bambino” years. A hundred years of history can go a long way to establish romantic mythology and deep traditions at a place like Fenway. Win or lose, the Sox and their beloved ballpark have become deﬁning elements in the life of Boston just as surely as the Charles River or the Freedom Trail. It just wouldn’t be summer here without an afternoon (or several!) spent at the park, watching the Olde Towne Team rack up the runs on the Green Monster’s handturned scoreboard. It’s also a special year in Washington, DC, though for reasons only loosely related to politics. Each year shortly after the vernal equinox, thousands of cherry trees spontaneously burst into pink profusion, delicately blanketing Save the Date!

the many historic buildings and parkways in a soft spring rain of fresh flower petals. This highly anticipated phenomenon attracts thousands of visitors annually from around the world. For that sweetly fleeting time each spring, the sheer beauty and natural springtime wonder of the cherry blossoms softens the landscape and the monumental silhouettes that define the contours of the nation’s capital. In March of 1912, the cherry trees arrived in Washington as a gift from the city of Tokyo. There were 12 different native Japanese varieties in all, for a grand total of 3,020 trees. While that’s a large number of individual trees, like Fenway, the collective pleasure they’ve given can be multiplied tenfold through the generations upon generations of people who have appreciated their beauty over the years. Musically, too, the world is feeling a lot like springtime these days. This month even as the trees are blooming and baseball season springs back into life for another summer, Japan’s Kitanodai Gagaku Ensemble will be joining members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a collaborative concert celebrating the 1912 gift of the cherry trees. The April 9th joint concert will feature a selection of traditional Japanese songs, in a program titled From Centennial to Millennial Spring. Whether your pleasure is baseball, music or horticulture, April brings with it the history of past seasons and the promise of many more ahead. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services “Boston for the year 1912 has moved forward with a stronger industrial and commercial spirit than I have ever known before.’’ —Mayor John Fitzgerald, quoted in the Boston Sunday Post Opening Day at Fenway is invariably a milestone occasion for New Englanders. More than any date on the calendar or daffodil in bloom, it’s the surest and most reliable sign that spring has ﬁnally arrived, and with it the promise of a new season. It will be an especially momentous occasion in 2012, as the venerable ballyard in the Back Bay celebrates its 100th anniversary. Fenway Park may be the most famous, but it’s merely one of an extraordinary number of buildings, initiatives, and institutions that were launched in Boston a century ago, the result of a concerted civic effort led by Mayor John Fitzgerald, the grandfather of John F. Kennedy. In 1912, “Honey Fitz” oversaw the ﬁfth-largest city in the nation (Boston’s population was 700,000, one-third greater than today, and growing rapidly). But besides a ballpark, the city was sorely lacking for grand hotels, hospitals, public amenities, infrastructure…and even room to grow. All of that changed in the span of a remarkable year that we’ll chronicle on Classical New England. This month, we’ll launch ”The Trail of ’12”, a series that will revisit the great spaces and grand visions of a century ago that are still with us today.

To help us on the journey, we’ve enlisted the help of some of The Hub’s finest musicians, writers and historians to bring the songs and stories of the Boston of 1912 to life. And what a year it was! Here are just a few of the centennial stops we’ll make: • The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel • The Franklin Park Zoo • The Hyde Park neighborhood (annexed by the City of Boston in 1912) • Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham & Women’s Hospital) • The Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common • The Skating Club of Boston • The Cathedral Church of St. Paul • The NAACP (Boston Chapter, first in the nation, chartered in 1912) • The Harvard Club on Commonwealth Avenue And, it should be said, Fenway Park, where the Red Sox and New York Highlanders played April 20, 1912, on Opening Day (Red Sox won by one run in extra innings). And, lest we forget, the World Championship flag was raised in 1912 when the Sox beat the New York Giants—four games to three, with one tie—in a rare eight-game series. Beating the accursed Giants by a whisker—now that is something to remember… and to dream about! Vern is the resident naturalist for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation on Nantucket. His appearances on WCAI generate listener calls and emails that include across-the-spectrum questions about birds, bird behavior and events going on in the natural world. Ospreys are back on nesting poles all over the region attracting lots of attention. Where do they spend the winter? How long do they live? Do they eat anything other than fish? These are just some of the questions you can expect to be answered Vern Laux is joined by WCAI listeners Bill and on The Point. Judith Page on a fall birding outing at Peterson’s You never know what you farm in Falmouth. might hear when Vern stops by. A listener once called in to tell us about her efforts to save a small bird by breathing into its beak! You might call it bird CPR. (Seems the little guy was just tired and after a short nap under a bush, he perked up and flew away.) Call in with your bird questions and stories the first Monday of the month from 9:30am to 10am. Vern also can be heard with the weekly Bird News report on Wednesdays at 8:35am on Morning Edition, and Fridays at 4:30pm on All Things Considered.
