Whatever your holiday tradition this time of year, WGBH is here to help you celebrate. We live in a region rich in arts and culture, and we’re thrilled to provide a wider stage for great performances by both established and emerging talent, including the Boston Children’s Chorus (see cover and page 26), whose All Choir Holiday Concert always is at the top of my list. their performance, broadcast on WGBH’s Classical new england (on air and online), is just one of many treats we’ve included in our holiday basket. “this year we’ll be sharing more of the Hub’s holiday happenings than ever before,” says Classical new england managing director Benjamin Roe, “with live broadcasts to the nation of Handel’s Messiah (presented by the Handel and Haydn society at symphony Hall) as well as Boston Baroque’s Gala First Day Concert from Harvard University’s sanders theatre. And any time you’re in a holiday mood, our 24/7 Holiday music Channel is just a click away at classicalnewengland.org.” WGBH also is celebrating another Hub holiday tradition, one that’s near and dear: the 10th anniversary of 89.7 host Brian O’Donovan’s popular A Christmas Celtic Sojourn concerts. tune in 89.7, Boston Public radio, on december 16 (page 25) for a live broadcast of this much-loved celebration of music and dance, which we’ll be sharing for the first time with public radio listeners across the country. those are only some of the delights you can experience this month—or experience again, in the case of Masterpiece’s hugely successful Downton Abbey. in advance of the January 2013 premiere of season 3, we’re bringing back the first two seasons of America’s favorite drama. And for those who just can’t get enough, we’ve got a final gift for you to unwrap: a new television special, Downton Abbey Revisited (see page 10), brimming with behind-the-scenes cast interviews, highlights from the first two seasons and a sneak peek at what the new year has in store for the Crawley family and its staff. this issue of Explore! (in print and also on your iPad or browser; see below) is filled with programs to keep you and your family inspired and entertained throughout this festive time of year—holiday delights made possible by your generous annual support. With gratitude and best wishes for a safe and joyful season,

What’s the motivation behind these unconventional friendships? this film looks at these remarkable relationships firsthand, and through caregivers, biologists and animal behaviorists, explores what they suggest about the nature of animal emotions.

A Tip of the Hat
We’re tipping our hats to Thomas Phillip “Tip” O’Neill Jr. with an original WGBH production that we’ve released from our archives to celebrate what would have been the venerable politician’s 100th birthday this month. First broadcast on O’neill’s impending retirement in 1987, Goodbye, Mr. Speaker profiles O’neill’s life and times through a mixture of interviews and scenes from his daily political routine. O’neill championed the causes of Commonwealth for more than 50 years, including 10 years as speaker of the Us House of representatives. introduced by WGBH’s emily rooney, the film includes an interview with O’neill in which he reflects on his long career as it comes to a close. Goodbye, Mr. Speaker Thu, 12/6 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Artist Winfred Rembert is known for indelible images of toiling in the cotton fields, singing in church, dancing in juke joints or working on a chain gang. His autobiographical paintings depicting the day-today existence of African Americans in the segregated South are especially powerful because of his own experiences with racial injustice as recently as the 1960s and ’70s. In this documentary, Rembert relives his turbulent life and, in a series of intimate reminiscences, shows us how even the most painful memories can be transformed into something meaningful and beautiful. Radio Spotlight Hosts’ Holiday Picks for 2012 Looking for a good book? A festive holiday event? Ever wonder what a “Poinsettia” tastes like? We’ve asked a cross-section of WGBH radio personalities to make some holiday recommendations. Brian O’Donovan, A Celtic Sojourn Lullabies for Love, CD, Compass Records, 2011 This has become one of our favorite gifts for any time of the year, but it’s absolutely perfect for the holidays. It’s a superb collection of lullabies from around the Celtic world. Though I produced it myself, the concept was born out of my wife Lindsay’s time at Many Hopes in Kenya in 2010. It’s a home for abandoned and orphaned girls, dedicated to changing Kenya through the education of women. The inspiration came from a tune Lindsay wrote on her return. We recorded that, and then she came up with the idea of asking our musician friends to donate a lullaby each. They did so with immediate generosity and this compilation was born. Proceeds go directly to the home. Kara Miller, Innovation Hub Don’t Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship, and the End of Violence in Inner-City America, by David Kennedy Book, Bloomsbury USA, 2011

The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human, by Jonathan Gottschall Book, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012 I’m recommending two books whose authors I interviewed this year. Don’t Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship, and the End of Violence in Inner-City America by David Kennedy is captivating, terrifying and enlightening. You’ll never look at crime the same way again. The other book is The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human by Jonathan Gottschall. It examines the biological imperative to tell and consume stories—and Gottschall proves a captivating storyteller himself. Eric Jackson, Eric in the Evening The Jazz Standards: A Guide to the Jazz Repertoire, by Ted Gioia Book, Oxford University Press USA, 2012 Prolific author Ted Gioia looks at 250 different songs, examining the individual songs both historically and musically, and commenting on multiple versions. Easy reading—even a jazz newbie should be able to understand and enjoy it.

Mindy Todd, The Point Festival of Trees Event, The Whaling Museum, Nantucket Always a lot of fun to see how creative everyone is with their tree. Our theme for our tree this year is “Do you hear what I hear?” From the Nantucket Historical Association’s website: “The Whaling Museum is transformed into a festive winter wonderland. This island tradition features around 80 brilliantly decorated trees designed by community members, local merchants, nonprofit organizations, artists, artisans and schoolchildren.” Highfield Hall Holiday Ball Event, Highfield Hall, Falmouth Fun to get dressed up and enjoy some yummy food, dancing, holiday caroling and a silent auction in the renovated mansion built by the family of James Madison Beebe in 1878. But my favorite activity happens after Christmas: a second Christmas of sorts on New Year’s Eve. My brother’s family comes to visit from Connecticut and we invite other family and friends over and have a grand dinner followed by a Yankee swap (this year’s theme: “as seen on TV”) and charades. Laura Carlo, Classical Music with Laura Carlo Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Classical Music But Were Too Afraid to Ask, by Gareth Malone Book, Elliott & Thompson Ltd., 2012 Gareth Malone has written an interesting book to share with someone just beginning to explore classical music. He speaks to the everyman. There also were some great local CDs released this year: Boston Baroque’s The Creation by Haydn (on Linn Records); Harry Christophers and The Sixteen’s Palestrina, Vol. 1 issued by Coro (which technically came out last year but was just delivered to the station); Keith Lockhart and the BBC Concert Orchestra’s George W. Chadwick on the Dutton label; and finally, the Musicians of the Old Post Road have just issued a new CD, Roman Handel, on the Centaur label. We do Christmas “big” in our family. My husband and I take our son and a friend of his choosing to the following every year: The Holiday Lights exhibit/amusement park down at Edaville Railroad in Carver, MA; a (Boston) Holiday Pops Kids Matinee; the Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker; and we alternate year-to-year between Christmas Revels and Messiah. We also try to take part in something fun like a gingerbread house decorating event. And finally, we always participate as a family in a charitable fundraiser.
My tools: Quincy Jones’s Handel’s Messiah: Soulful Celebration (Warner/Reprise, 1992), and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing Christmas songs. Also, eggs, sugar, coconut rum: basic ingredients (there’s more but I’m not telling) for a batch of Coquito, a traditional Puerto Rican rum punch similar to eggnog. Because it packs a punch, I’ll be taking dainty sips at home. Of course I’ll be in my traditional holiday dress—flannel pj’s—from L.L. Bean or the just-discovered Nick and Nora line. And for me, nothing says Christmas like my fluffy slippers stitched with pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Black Santa Claus. Dressed appropriately, I’ll be curling up for several days of watching Downton Abbey. I’m woefully behind and have not allowed anybody to tell me the Season 2 details. I’m doing Christmas Day dinner for friends and loved ones. On the table will be one important staple for this Southern woman—my mom’s cornbread dressing (that’s stuffing to you people above the Mason-Dixon line). It’s so good it’s made grown men cry with delight. My special guests will enjoy my décor—a house decorated with my vast (and I do mean vast) collection of black angels, black Santas, and yes, black nutcrackers. It’s completely over the top and I love it! And since it’s the season for adult beverages, I’m happy to share the recipe (see below) for one of my favorite holiday drinks, the Poinsettia (yes, named after the plant). Drinks that feature champagne and sparkling wine are especially festive. I like a tasty drink that looks like the holiday, and the Poinsettia is perfect. So a tip of the glass to all Boston Public Radio listeners—happy holidays!
Poinsettia Recipe
3 ounces cranberry juice 1/2 ounce Cointreau 4 ounces Brut champagne or sparkling wine 1 ounce orange juice* Lime twist or fresh cranberries as a garnish Mix ingredients and enjoy! *I’ve also seen versions of this drink made with pomegranate juice.
Ben Roe, Classical Services Managing Director Letters from Father Christmas, by J.R.R. Tolkien Book, Mariner Books, 2004 (revised edition) I may be a music guy, but my go-to gift for the holidays is a slender little book by J.R.R. Tolkien. Yes, that Tolkien—the Lord of the Rings author who was a master of creating full-blown exotic worlds, replete with dragons, elves, goddesses and enough evil characters to fill a thousand nightmares. But this utterly delightful collection displays Tolkien’s storytelling craft in a far more personal and intimate light: a collection of dispatches Tolkien wrote in the guise of Father Christmas fretting about doings at the North Pole. He actually mailed the stories to the young members of his family. They tell charming, vivid tales of life at the North Pole, including the adventures of the somewhat clumsy North Polar bear (he falls through the roof and straight into the dining room of Father Christmas’s house), reindeer on the loose, and this being Tolkien, the inevitable goblins making trouble for everyone. It’s a gift that anyone young or old will treasure. Here’s a hint: read it aloud to a young one while your dial is tuned to the holiday sounds of 99.5 Classical New England! Brian McCreath, The Bach Hour with Brian McCreath Bach: Cantatas for Christmas, CD, Soli Deo Gloria Records, 2012 Each year, as Handel’s Messiah rings out through concert halls, explore some of the lesser-known seasonal music by Handel’s contemporary, J.S. Bach. John Eliot Gardiner’s traversal of Bach’s cantatas is a landmark for incredible music, and this six-CD collection will bring you unparalleled brightness and joy. Lisa Mullins, The World Ancient Grains for Modern Meals: Mediterranean Whole Grain Recipes for Barley, Farro, Kamut, Polenta, Wheat Berries & More, by Maria Speck Book, Ten Speed Press, 2011 Mongrel, CD, ONC-Producoes Culturais, 2010 In the past few months, I’ve traveled to Morocco and Portugal, two countries with ancient food traditions perfect for the modern palate—including mine! Taste for yourself with Ancient Grains for Modern Meals. Warm oat berries with walnuts and gorgonzola is a mighty fine start. When I was in Lisbon this summer, I discovered the music of jazz pianist/composer Mário Laginha. In his trio’s latest CD, Mongrel, Mário brings Chopin a bit closer to his own musical universe. 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Year in Review
By Phil Redo, Managing Director 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio
It’s hard to believe another year is drawing to a close— a busy and exciting one. In reviewing everything that has happened at WGBH Radio over the past 12 months, perhaps most important is the increased support we have received from you. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for helping us grow our re-energized local efforts and for sharing your thoughts, suggestions and criticisms. It all contributes to WGBH becoming stronger, healthier and better able to meet your high standards and expectations for coverage of events and stories that are happening here in New England and throughout the world. In 2012, Boston Public Radio introduced several new initiatives including our week-long WGBH Focus series. The first involved coverage of the landmark Supreme Court hearings on health care. Others offered an in-depth examination of the MBTA, the State Integrity Investigation project and, of course, our recent election coverage that included our 30 Issues in 30 Days series and the airing of every major local and national debate. Over this past year we expanded our news-gathering resources and our partnerships with the national programs heard on 89.7: The World (produced here in our Brighton studios), Marketplace and The Takeaway, (for which WGBH now contributes 30 hours of Boston-based producer support). The Takeaway now regularly integrates contributions from WGBH reporters and hosts including Phillip Martin, Callie Crossley and Kara Miller.

This also was the year to say thanks to WGBH’s architects and to our WGBH Physical Plant colleagues. After much planning, WGBH’s local radio, television and digital news came together in a brand-new merged newsroom that now houses all of our local content-gathering resources. Each of our media platforms has been working with one another for quite some time, but until this past September, we were located in separate physical spaces. Today, we sit side-by-side on the second floor of One Guest Street, radio reporters beside TV producers and our digital editorial team next to our radio and TV hosts. Our combined efforts are now better focused and our goals more clear about helping to connect and share our work with the many thousands who access WGBH through the variety of options now available to them: over the airwaves, or via websites, tablets and smartphones—including through apps and social media. The new WGBH Newsroom is located directly above the international newsroom that is home to The World—we joke that WGBH News is finally on top of the world! The coming year promises to be another exciting one, unpredictable and challenging. We will do our very best to keep track of it all and to share it all with you. Happy New Year!

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Life, One Minute at a Time
I actually find sailing stressful. Like, a perfectly nice, normal person asks you to go sailing with them? And then they just slowly turn into Mussolini. —Susie, Truro
Jay Allison WCAI Founder and Executive Producer
At our public radio station here on the Cape and Islands, we carry mostly hour-long blocks of programming. But in the cracks between those shows we broadcast the voices of our neighbors. These are little, one-minute stories, overheard conversations, memories, jokes, poems…fragments of life as we live it here. All right, here we go…now you’re going to see the correct way to put the wash on the line. —Eileen, Nantucket These vignettes (we call them Sonic IDs) come from people living here or passing through. They come from old-timers, teenagers, tourists, lifers, washashores… I just moved here this year from New York. And I can’t swim. How can you be surrounded by water and can’t swim?! —Ian, Martha’s Vineyard Our eventual goal (impossible, but we’re sticking with it) is to put everyone on the air and create a living chronicle of this place—an ever-growing oral history, like an epic poem or a community autobiography, written in short stanzas by all of us. Because these moments arrive unheralded in between the news of the day, they have an uncanny effect: they give as much importance to a little boy imitating a chain saw as to the ticks of the stock market.
What’s on WCAI
Do you know your neighbors, the people on your street? Do you know all their names, their stories? I don’t. But I feel I should. Our radio project is a somewhat feeble attempt to create a broad sense of neighborliness, to create an “excuse” to ask questions, to meet people—because they are full of surprises. My husband is a retired dairy farmer. A dairy farmer works seven days a week. He had never seen the ocean. So when we were married, we came to the Cape so he could see the ocean. His eyes filled with tears and he said, “I have to live here.” And here we are, and here we intend to stay. —Barbara, Harwichport We share a place. Let’s make the best of it. Let’s talk to each other. And listen.

We are reminded that we are connected, not just by the wires and waves of media, but by our place, and our humanness. And, of course, that’s what life is like for most of us. The distant news of the world affects our lives, but we spend our lives right here, where we live.
