When European settlers first arrived in Australia, they saw it as a young country, but nothing could have been further from the truth. Australia is the oldest, flattest, driest continent on Earth. This month, the WGBH-produced Nova—the most popular and acclaimed science series on television—takes you on a groundbreaking journey in a new four-part series that will forever change your understanding not only of the Land Down Under, but of our planet (page 12). “Australia’s First 4 Billion Years serves as both a travel log and scientific expedition,” says WGBH’s Paula Apsell, Nova senior executive producer. The series is hosted by Richard Smith, an Australian scientist and filmmaker. “Richard spent two years crisscrossing the continent for this project. He’s high energy, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he sees and what he’s learning. He’s also scrupulous about scientific accuracy, which makes him a perfect fit for Nova.” But this is more than a journey across the continent: it’s a look back in time. “Of all the continents on Earth,” says Richard, “none preserves the great saga of our planet and the evolution of life quite like this one.” Stunning animation shows how the continent looked billions and millions of years ago—bringing dinosaurs and sea monsters to life—while helping us connect the dots between the distant past and the present. The story continues online on Nova’s website and on WGBH’s global news magazine The World, co-produced with PRI and the BBC World Service, which airs weekdays on 89.7 WGBH at 3pm and 8pm. Look for science journalist Ari Daniel Shapiro’s special reports on everything from Australian saltwater crocodiles to the controversy surrounding 95 million-year-old dinosaur fossils on The World, Wednesdays (4/10, 4/17, 4/24, 5/1) before each Nova episode premiere on WGBH 2. More science stories from the most trusted science series on television, now also online and on the radio—produced by WGBH thanks to your generous annual support.

Spring Fever!

It’s springtime and a little monkey has a big case of spring fever! But serious lobby dogs like Hundley have no time for frolicking, especially when there’s a spring cleaning prize to be won. Hundley’s dreams are dashed when a burst pipe forces him to evacuate the building and join George in the country. Seeing such a down dog, George gets the idea to give his friend spring fever, but instead Hundley gets lost. Will George be able to rescue Hundley and lift his spirits? In a two-part special, acclaimed filmmaker David Sutherland (The Farmer’s Wife, Country Boys) creates an unforgettable portrait of Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation. Sutherland follows Robin over three years as she struggles to raise her two children, further her education and heal herself from the wounds of sexual abuse she suffered as a child. Robin’s battles in tribal court with her ex-husband for custody of the children, even after he is convicted of abusive sexual contact with his daughter, illuminate how serious this problem is on the reservation. Her quest to heal her family, find a man worthy of her love, build a career and fulfill her goal of returning to her reservation to help prevent the abuse of women and children, takes her on an intimate and inspiring journey full of heartbreak, discovery and redemption. Never Forget

This month, WGBH offers a number of films in remembrance of the Holocaust. In Never Forget to Lie, presented by WGBH’s Frontline, filmmaker Marian Marzynski returns to Poland and the Jewish ghettos of his childhood. But this time, he is not alone. Marzynski attends an annual Warsaw gathering of Holocaust survivors, and accompanies some of them to the Warsaw ghetto from which he and others escaped through the aid of sympathetic Christian friends. The film rescues haunting pieces of the past while exploring conflicting feelings about national, cultural and religious identity that mark many survivors. In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of brutally raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park. They spent between six and 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed that he alone had committed the crime, leading to their convictions being overturned. Set against a backdrop of a decaying city beset by violence and racial tension, The Central Park Five tells the story of that horrific crime, the rush to judgment by police, a media clamoring for sensational stories, an outraged public and the five lives upended by this miscarriage of justice. The Bletchley Circle follows four ordinary women with the extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover operations at Bletchley Park, site of the United Kingdom’s main decryption unit. Now in 1952, Millie (Rachael Stirling), Susan (Anna Maxwell Martin), Lucy (Sophie Rundle) and Jean (Julie Graham) have returned to civilian life, keeping their intelligence work secret from all, including family and friends. A series of ghastly murders targeting women, however, reunites the team as they set out to decode the pattern behind the crimes in this three-part series. The ﬁnal episode airs in May. WGBH brings you another British inspector to fall in love with: George Gently, an old-school detective trying to come to terms with a time when the lines between the police and criminals have become blurred, when the proliferation of drugs is about to change the face of policing forever and when Britain’s youth stand on the brink of a social and sexual revolution. The ﬁrst episode of Season 1 brings us into Chief Inspector Gently’s life just after the murder of his wife. Gently decides to take on one last case before retiring. But it turns out that the case—which also has attracted the attention of Joe Webster, the man who killed his wife—is not as simple as may appear. Gently is played by actor Martin Shaw (right in photo), who portrayed Adam Dalgliesh in several P.D. James dramas, including Death in the Holy Orders. 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Boston Public Radio Welcomes Jim and Margery WGBH welcomes popular local commentators Jim Braude and Margery Eagan as the new co-hosts of 89.7 WGBH’s Boston Public Radio, heard weekdays at noon. Braude and Eagan lead two hours of local conversation that combine newsmaker interviews, conversations with experts and listener call-ins. With the addition of the pair, Boston Public Radio has launched a new daily segment. Open Mic, which airs at 1pm, includes weekly appearances by a variety of guests who discuss current events and debates that are shaping the news in Greater Boston and across the nation. In addition, Braude and Eagan host a monthly Ask the Governor program on WGBH, a series they led in their former role at WTKK 96.9FM. For 13 years, Braude and Eagan co-hosted the Jim & Margery Show on WTKK. Braude, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, started his career as a legal services lawyer in the South Bronx. He hosts Broadside: The News with Jim Braude weeknights on New England Cable News. Eagan, a columnist for the Boston Herald, grew up in Fall River. Throughout her career, Eagan has written for a number of publications, including Boston Magazine. She has appeared on national and local news programs and is a regular guest on Greater Boston and Beat the Press on WGBH TV. Throughout the month of April, public radio stations across the nation are celebrating the strong and unique partnership that exists between public radio and music. While our own listeners know firsthand the critical role that WGBH and Classical New England have played in our local music culture and industry—a six-decade tradition of broadcasting live Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts is just one example—that relationship often has been overlooked in the larger community. Most often, when people think of the phrase public radio, their first association is with our signature news and information programs. But in fact, more than 40 percent of nationwide listening to public radio is for music programming, such as the kind that Classical New England provides on a round-the-clock basis on-air and online. And increasingly, public radio has become the only home for more and more genres of music. Here in Boston, with a music scene that rivals any in the nation, the connection between public radio stations and the club, concert hall and conservatory is absolutely vital. It was out of that need that Public Radio Music Month was born, and Classical New England is proud to be part of a nationwide initiative that connects local public radio stations, artists and audiences in communities across the US. Spring is a season for singing and Classical New England is embracing the moment with a brand-new program: Together in Song. “There’s a reason choral music has been called ‘The First Art,’” notes managing director Benjamin Roe. “The simple act of joining voices together— be it in devotion, in sorrow or in celebration—is one of the oldest impulses of the human community, and has given rise to some of the greatest works of Western art. But at the same time, programs like Glee on television and the phenomenal rise of a cappella groups on college campuses reflects the continuing popularity and vitality of choral music.” As the name implies, Together in Song will be a celebration of both the music, and of the myriad ensembles and personalities who present it, expertly woven together by new host Anthony Trecek-King, artistic director of the Boston Children’s Chorus. The versatility of Trecek-King’s repertoire made him the right choice to bring choral music to a broad audience, Roe says. “I was very impressed by how Anthony reaches out to different constituencies through his programming with the BCC. And I can’t think of a better time to introduce this program than during Public Radio Music Month (see story, opposite page), when we spotlight the vital partnership between public radio stations and the musical communities they serve.” Together in Song premieres at noon on Easter Sunday, March 31, with a program called The Lily Blooms, a celebration of Easter that will range from the plain-spoken and affecting hymnody of Colonial composer William Billings, to the modern sounds of a children’s chorus.
