Three years ago, American Experience executive producer Mark Samels asked Robert Stone, the filmmaker behind the series’ Oswald’s Ghost and Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst, to develop an idea for a film that would focus on a far-reaching, national media event in America’s recent history. “The catch was,” recalls WGBH’s Samels, “it had to have an inspiring tone.” Stone wasted no time. He immediately suggested Earth Day 1970, the single largest demonstration in American history, which attracted 20 million people nationwide. This month, on the 40th anniversary of that seismic event, WGBH is proud to present American Experience’s Earth Days (see page 15), the history of the modern environmental movement as told through the powerful stories of the men and women who have shaped our nation’s, and the world’s, environmental conscience. A Sundance Film Festival hit, Earth Days is drawing rave reviews, including from Variety, which called the film “a moving, elegiac, deeply contemplative work that leaves the viewer not with a save-the-world checklist, but rather a spirit of hopeful reflection.” The film’s roots are not only historical, but also personal. “When I was in 7th grade,” Stone tells us, “I made my very first documentary as part of a school science project for Earth Day. It was a little Super-8 film called ‘Pollution.’ In many ways I feel that everything I’ve done professionally from that day to this has led me to the making of this film.” We’re celebrating Earth Days (and Earth Day) in a major way. On April 1, you’re invited to join us at our studios here in Brighton for a preview screening and discussion (wgbh.org/earthdaysscreening) with writer/producer/ director Stone and other panelists, moderated by Peter Thomson, environmental reporter for The World on 89.7 WGBH. Throughout April, we’re featuring environmentally themed productions on TV, radio and the Web that we’ve highlighted in this magazine , and also at wgbh.org/earth. “The environmental movement has come a long way from its start in the 1950s,” Samels says. “But we’re still facing many of the same unanswered questions. We hope that by examining the gains, and losses, of this relatively young movement, we may provide a useful roadmap of the future.” Big questions. Powerful stories. Inspiring possibilities…all thanks to your sustained support. I hope you’ll watch Earth Days, on air or online, and let us know what you think!

Saving Lives Today, surgical breakthroughs are making face transplants, limb transplants and a host of other cuttingedge operations possible. But getting to this point has been an extraordinary story of bravery and mistakes. Presented by Michael Mosley, Blood & Guts: A History of Surgery introduces audiences to the breathtaking, heroic and at times even comical story of how surgeons came to successfully save millions of lives worldwide. With reports from across the US and Europe, the film looks at the latest surgical techniques and reveals how science has progressed through both catastrophes and successes in its courageous pursuit of knowledge. Blood & Guts: A History of Surgery Premieres Thu, 4/1 at 9pm on WGBH 2
Looking Back Through contemporary interviews and historical footage, the landmark Eyes on the Prize series covers all the major events of the Civil Rights movement from 1954 to 1985—from the Montgomery bus boycott in 1954 to the Voting Rights Act in 1965, from community power in schools to “Black Power” in the streets, from early acts of individual courage to the flowering of a mass movement and its eventual split into factions. When Eyes on the Prize premiered in 1987, The Los Angeles Times called it “an exhaustive documentary that shouldn’t be missed.” The series won six Emmys and numerous other awards, including an Academy Award nomination, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the duPont-Columbia Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. Telescope Tales The telescope has fundamentally changed our understanding of our place in the universe. What began as a curiosity—two spectacle lenses held a foot apart—ultimately revolutionized human thought across science, philosophy and religion. This tale of human ingenuity involves some of the most colorful figures of the scientific world—Galileo, Kepler, Newton, William Herschel, George Hale and Edwin Hubble— leading up to today’s colossal telescopes, housed in space-age cathedrals or orbiting high above the Earth. Now, at the center of an international space race, a new generation of everlarger telescopes is poised to reveal answers to longstanding questions about our universe. The Enlightened One Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. The Vanishing Frogs have been hopping the planet for more than 350 million years. Along the way, they’ve evolved into some of the most wondrous, diverse and beloved animals on earth. But now, they’re slipping away. We’ve already lost one third of our amphibians and more are disappearing each day. Some say it’s the greatest extinction since the dinosaurs. Ecosystems are beginning to unravel, important medical cures are vanishing and we’re losing a dear old friend. It’s a global crisis: scientists around the world are mobilizing to stem the tide before the next frog crosses the thin green line. The Roots of a Movement Director Robert Stone (Oswald’s Ghost, Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst) traces the origins of the modern environmental movement through the eyes of nine Americans who propelled the movement from its beginnings in the 1950s to its moment of triumph in 1970 with the original Earth Day and to its status as a major political force in America. A hit at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, this WGBH production had its theatrical release last year, and now is making its television debut. The Prince of Denmark Shakespeare’s immortal “To be, or not to be” takes on a whole new meaning (and medium) as classical stage and screen actors Sir Patrick Stewart, in his Laurence Olivier Award-winning turn as Claudius, and David Tennant, as the titular Dane, reprise their roles in this television adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2008 stage production of Hamlet. Gregory Doran directs, recreating his stage direction in the film shot at St. Joseph’s College in Mill Hill, London.

WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture The Takeaway
Produced by 89.7 WGBH, WNYC, BBC, Public Radio International, and The New York Times and hosted by John Hockenberry and Celeste Headlee, The Takeaway breaks the mold of public radio news programs—delivering national and international news and cultural stories in a conversational live format. Each weekday morning, Hockenberry and Headlee convene critical conversations, take live reports from the field, and provide a platform for commentary and analysis from experts and listeners alike. Weekdays at 6am and 9am
The Diane Rehm Show
The Diane Rehm Show offers listeners thoughtful and lively conversations on an array of topics with some of the world’s top newsmakers, journalists and authors— President Bill Clinton, General Tommy Franks, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Julie Andrews and Toni Morrison among them. Newsweek magazine calls the series one of “the most interesting talk shows in the country,” and The National Journal says Diane is “the class act of the talk radio world.” Weekdays at 10am
Rooney and Crossley Online!
If you miss an episode of The Emily Rooney Show or The Callie Crossley Show, 89.7 WGBH’s two popular new weekday programs at 12noon and 1pm, catch them online! Each day’s program is available at 3pm at wgbh.org/897.
The Emily Rooney Show
Emily Rooney (left), the award-winning host, executive editor and creator of WGBH’s Greater Boston and Beat the Press, examines local news and public affairs in a spirited daily forum, with topics ranging from politics to the law to science and technology. Weekdays at 12noon
The Callie Crossley Show
Callie Crossley (right), the awardwinning veteran journalist and documentary filmmaker who is a regular panelist with WGBH TV’s Basic Black, and a commentator on Greater Boston’s popular Beat the Press program, hosts an hour of daily discussion of current events, local happenings, arts and culture, and water cooler buzz—from the boardroom to the bus stop. Weekdays at 1pm
The World
The World brings international stories home to America. Each weekday from WGBH’s studios, host Marco Werman guides listeners through major issues and stories, linking global events directly to the American agenda. The World’s coverage is provided by a global network of international journalists. The series also has access to the 250 BBC correspondents located around the world. Unique in public radio, this network of reporters works in concert with a multinational team of producers and editors to bring depth of understanding and freshness of perspective to global news. National Poetry Month
By Brian McCreath Host of Classical Music with Brian McCreath, Saturdays and Sundays, 7am–10am, and The Bach Hour, Sundays at 8pm Several years ago, a friend asked a question that stopped me cold in my tracks. She was a subscriber to the Milwaukee Ballet, where I played principal trumpet, and her seat was almost directly behind the conductor in the first row of the audience. So when she asked, “What difference does a conductor make?” it took me a moment to remember that a lot of what musicians do can be mysterious to those watching and listening. A great conductor makes a group of musicians sound like one unified voice while also allowing for individual expression of character and interpretation from various members of that group. The answer to my friend’s question was, in short, that the conductor makes an incalculably huge difference. A good example of the difference a conductor makes can be found in the new recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, soprano Miah Persson, and conductor Iván Fischer. Certain composers highlight the job of the conductor more than others, and Mahler’s scores include some of the most explicit instructions any composer has left for performers. Despite Mahler’s attempts to remain, from the grave, the hyper-controlling maestro legend makes him out to be, there are still an infinite number of subtle gradations in tempo, dynamic and balance that are in the court of the conductor. Looked at in its totality, the combination of technical demands, interpersonal coordination and insight into the spiritual depth of the music is mind-boggling. As listeners, we have the luxury of simply receiving the fruits of that process.
All month long, host Laura Carlo is celebrating National Poetry Month with classical pieces that were inspired by poetry, beginning with Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” based on sonnets written by the composer himself. Throughout April, Carlo explores the symphonic poems of Antonin Dvořák which were based on Czech poetry, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “The Lark Ascending” based on the George Meredith poem of the same title, Lord Byron’s “Manfred,” which became Schumann’s “Manfred”…and many, many more. Carlo also will read your original poetry on air! Submit your poems at wgbh.org/995. Weekdays at 5am The Bach Hour
J.S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio
Smaller in scale than the more well known Christmas Oratorio, Bach’s Easter Oratorio is nevertheless a splendid and moving dramatization of the aftermath of the central event in Christianity. Musically, its DNA can be traced to a secular work and so highlights the ways in which, for Bach, the boundary between the secular and the sacred worlds was practically non-existent. Philippe Herreweghe leads Collegium Vocale with soprano Barbara Schlick, alto Kai Wessel, tenor James Taylor and bass Peter Kooy. Sun, 4/4 at 8pm Classical Music with Cathy Fuller

Radio Spotlight In Performance with Cathy Fuller In its first few months, WGBH’s new 99.5 All Classical service has broadened its offerings, from live concert presentations around Boston to more in-depth analysis and exploration of the music that has been the hallmark of classical public radio. Classical music host Cathy Fuller recently introduced a new segment to her weekday program Classical Music with Cathy Fuller, called “In Performance,” which airs daily at 1pm and on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel recently caught up with Fuller to find out about this and other new programs and directions on the new 99.5 All Classical.

What is your new In Performance hour all about? Boston is a tremendously rich cultural city. It has such a vast spectrum of music—within an hour I can feature our recordings from the Boston Early Music Festival to the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. I thought it would be a good idea to spotlight local performances. I wanted to show people the expanse of what we do—
especially our newer listeners who may not know that we spend a huge amount of time inviting musicians into people’s lives in a very personal way.
Q A
What might you hear in an In Performance hour? Our library of performances that we’ve recorded goes way back—to the 1980s. We’ve got some of the first recordings of the late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson who lived here in Boston and studied at Emmanuel Music before becoming an international star. You might hear a festival we recorded from Montreal or Rockport, or very often a concert from Jordan Hall or Mechanics Hall. If WGBH recorded it, you’ll hear it on In Performance.

Tell me about the Live from Fraser programs. Live from Fraser is limited to recordings done in WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio, so it’s a much more intimate hour—at 7pm on Thursdays. We usually have at least one live performance a
Q
How is the transition to a 24-hour classical station going? Right now, we’re still at the beginning stages. It’s very much a work in progress. We’re looking forward to having new ways to reflect the vibrancy of the actual human presence of the musicians in this city—many new features are being envisioned, including a serious focus on Boston’s composers and further ways to bring more audiences into our studios. We’ve only just begun!
