The Soldier—David, a former infantryman in Iraq with the US Army’s Third Platoon, Charlie Company, whose struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder and a “Less Than Honorable” discharge that denied him access to medical beneﬁts were the subject of Frontline’s 2010 Peabody Award-winning documentary The Wounded Platoon (see page 10). “You’re trained not to think about it,” says David of the horrors he experienced during and after combat. “You’re trained to simply do as you’re told.” The Artist—Jason, who grew up surrounded by drugs, gangs and violence. “There was a point where I looked out my window onto my street, where my neighbor had been shot, and I really didn’t see myself making it to 21,” says Jason. The Activist—Kim, who at the age of 11 was diagnosed with juvenile glaucoma. “As my vision loss progressed, my parents would have to describe what was happening, whispering at the movies,” Kim says. Angry theatergoers would tell them to hush. “We just stopped going to the movies altogether. That became something we just didn’t do.” The Kid—Lev, who loves the Red Sox, and playing cello. “My grandmother had a cello in her house,” he says. “I always liked to just play around with it and pluck the strings.” Eventually, he started taking lessons when he was “around three and a month.” The Mom—Elisa, whose son’s diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome set her on a search for resources to help her family meet the challenge—and to help others understand. “When I stumbled on a phrase that said ‘Arthur introduces a new character with Asperger’s syndrome,’ in When Carl Met George (see page 3), my jaw just dropped,” recalls Elisa. Barbra Streisand: One Night Only at the Village Vanguard

In the early ’60s, the Village Vanguard was one of many clubs scattered throughout Greenwich Village. Now it stands alone, the last of its kind. In September 2009, a select group of fans and friends had the rare opportunity to experience Barbra Streisand perform in this ultimate up-close-and-personal setting. Accompanied by piano, bass, guitar and drums, this is the artist at her most intimate.

Country Pop Legends

Country pop legends unite to perform their biggest and most-loved hit recordings from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s in an an all-new, emotional trip down three decades of memory lane, hosted by country music legend Roy Clark. New performances from Glenn Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Hank Locklin, Bill Anderson, BJ Thomas, the Bellamy Brothers, the Browns and more are intermixed with classic full-length vintage archival gems.

Daniel O’Donnell Live from Nashville

Daniel O’Donnell is back for his 11th public television special. The performance features a compilation of country and Irish favorites with special guests including Charley Pride singing his signature tune, “Crystal Chandeliers,” longtime musical companion Mary Duff, talented vocalist and wife Majella O’Donnell and The Daniel O’Donnell Band.

Ed Sullivan’s Comedy Legends

For 23 years, The Ed Sullivan Show showcased America’s premiere comedy legends performing their acts for millions of Americans every week. This special from the Sullivan archives features the original stars that deﬁned the history of comedy, in their prime doing their original acts. The lineup includes classic bits from Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson, Joan Rivers, Alan King, Jack Paar, Jackie Gleason, Victor Borge and many more.

Frank Sinatra: Concert for the Americas

The release of this spectacular 1982 concert proves that even at age 66, Francis Albert Sinatra was still the undisputed “Chairman of the Board.” Recorded at the Altos De Chavón Amphitheater in La Romana, Dominican Republic, this epic performance features songs such as “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and Sinatra’s legendary “Theme from New York, New York.”

Malt Shop Memories: The Concert

Join hosts Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell and Fabian as they take you back in time to record hops, cars with big ﬁns, pony tails and beehives. Twelve of the living legends from the late ’50s and early ’60s perform their greatest hits in this Atlantic City concert, including songs such as The Angels’ “My Boyfriend’s Back,” The Drifters’ “There Goes My Baby,” The Tymes’ “So Much in Love” and Brian Hyland’s “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” The special also includes archival footage from The Four Seasons, Martha and The Vandells’ and The Beach Boys.

Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Legacy

Join Grammy-nominated singer Michael Feinstein for an unforgettable night of music as he presents an evening dedicated to The Sinatra Legacy— celebrating the writers, music and performers of the era when Frank Sinatra reigned supreme. Backed by a 17-piece Big Band, Feinstein guides viewers on a musical journey that describes how Sinatra affected his contemporaries and how they, in turn, affected him. Throughout his performance in Indiana’s state-of-the-art Palladium, Feinstein conjures up the biggest musical legends of that golden era through their extraordinary music, interspersed with intimate stories about their larger-than-life personalities.

Nikolai Baskov: Romantic Journey

Born in Moscow, 34-year-old Nikolai Baskov is known as Russia’s most beloved tenor. In Romantic Journey, he plays to an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 10,000 people at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Accompanied by a full orchestra, Baskov performs classic pieces from Tosca, La Boheme, Werther, Turandot and other favorites, including “Be My Love,” “Granada” and “Back to Sorrento.” Baskov is joined by world-renowned soprano, Montserrat Caballe, and her daughter, Montserrat Marti, for several rousing duets. Taped with 24 High Deﬁnition cameras, this is Russia’s most elaborate and expensive performance ever recorded for international television.

Visions of Germany: Along the Rhine

Journey through Germany’s southwestern region along the lyrical path of the Rhine River. Aerial footage and a local soundtrack—including native sons Ludwig von Beethoven and Richard Wagner—combine for an enchanting journey through this amazing region. The river provides the perfect itinerary from Lake Constance to Cologne, with side trips to the Grimm Brothers’ Black Forest, cosmopolitan Frankfurt, the rich wine region, historic Bonn, Heidelberg, the romantic string of castles like beads on a necklace at Koblenz and more.

Launch into space with the History Detectives and explore the excitement, promise and ingenuity that fueled America’s space exploration. First, detective Tukufu Zuberi tracks a scrap of metallic Mylar that could be one of America’s early satellites—balloons—in “Satelloon.” Then, in “Moon Museum,” Gwendolyn Wright investigates the notion that Andy Warhol’s art may be on the moon. Finally, in “Space Boot,” Elyse Luray tries on a jury-rigged ski boot with a magnetic metal brick bolted to the bottom that may be one of the ﬁrst prototypes for a NASA space boot. When War Comes Home

Since the Iraq War began, arrests of soldiers in the city of Colorado Springs have tripled. At least 36 servicemen based at the nearby Army post of Fort Carson have committed suicide. And 14 Fort Carson soldiers have been charged or convicted in at least 11 killings. Many of the most violent crimes involved men who had served in the same battalion in Iraq. Three of them came from a single platoon of infantrymen. Frontline tells the dark tale of the men of Third Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st battalion of the 506th infantry and how the war followed them home. It is a story of heroism, grief, vicious combat, depression, drugs, alcohol and brutal murder; an investigation into the Army’s mental health services; and a powerful portrait of what multiple tours and post-traumatic stress are doing to a generation of young American soldiers. The black mamba strikes with deadly precision, delivering venom packed with three different kinds of toxins. Without treatment, the mortality rate is 100 percent, the highest among all venomous snakes in the world. Until now, little has been known about the black mambas’ natural behavior in the wild. But in the tiny country of Swaziland in southern Africa, a team of herpetologists hopes its six-week study will change public perception of what team members feel is the world’s most misunderstood snake. Nature/Black Mamba Wed, 8/3 at 8pm on WGBH 2 Every 48 years, the inhabitants of the remote Indian state of Mizoram suffer a horrendous ordeal known locally as mautam. An indigenous species of bamboo, blanketing 30 percent of Mizoram’s 8,100 square miles, blooms once every half-century, spurring an explosion in the rat population that feeds off the bamboo’s fruit. Cosmic Murder

Oxford professor and amateur stargazer Andrew Crompton emerges from a church confessional, cryptically exclaiming that on Friday at 3:15, he’ll have an “excess of joy.” Later, Crompton is found dead at the foot of the stairs in the Oxford observatory. The investigation draws Detective Inspector Lewis (Kevin Whately) and Detective Sergeant Hathaway (Laurence Fox) into the ethereal writings of a 17th-century astronomer and a modern-day circle of scientists and musicians, and their unexpected connections to the deceased. The cosmos aside, there’s a dark deception at the center of the case, one that Lewis and Hathaway won’t be able to fully comprehend until Friday at 3:15. There, world-famous rockers Aterciopelados treat Edgar to an unplugged performance in the historic neighborhood of La Candelaria and bring him to a nearby indigenous peoples cultural center for a ceremony with Arhuaco shamans. The up-andcoming rock band Superlitio opens the doors of their recording studio for a private jam and later, Edgar digs through the crates at a funky shoe store/vinyl record store in downtown Bogota. Finally, he meets Fonseca, one of Colombia’s biggest pop stars, in Monserrate, a cathedral high in the mountains overlooking Bogota, for an unplugged performance of his hit song, “Paraiso.”

Radio Spotlight The Art of Storytelling When independent radio producer Jay Allison moved to Cape Cod in 1985, he realized that his new home was missing a public radio presence— so he founded one. WCAI, a service of WGBH, was born in 2000 and serves Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and the South Coast. Over the years, WCAI has developed its own sound, reﬂecting the voices of the communities it serves. In his 30+ year career as a radio producer and journalist, Allison has created hundreds of works—including documentaries, essays and series for national and international broadcast—and has won every major industry award, including six Peabody Awards, the duPont-Columbia Award and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Edward R. Murrow Award. Allison and his team at Atlantic Public Media are currently working with the New York City storytelling group The Moth to produce The Moth Radio Hour, the Peabody Award-winning public radio series airing on 89.7 WGBH this summer. Allison recently chatted with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about how he got started in public radio and how telling stories connects people and communities.

Q A

How did you ﬁnd your way to public radio? It was the 70s. I met a guy at a party who said I should check out this thing called NPR, so I literally wandered in off the street—just walked right in. I felt like I had a right to be there because I was a citizen of the United States. Public radio was just forming its own identity and so was I, which was a great time for us to meet. I insinuated myself into the place as an independent producer, even though I didn’t know what an independent producer was. I borrowed gear, audiotape, razor blades [for splicing/editing], and a machine from a guy I met at the party and off I went. It was an amazing discovery to me that I could take a tape recorder and microphone and ﬁnd out anything I wanted to in the whole world. Fast forward 30+ years, and most of my work now is about returning the favor of the loaned tape recorder to new people who care about the mission of public broadcasting.

Q A

What kinds of projects have you enjoyed the most? One of the projects I’ve been working on for the past 10 years is Transom.org, a website that helps people tell their own stories on public radio. Another one is PRX.org, the Public Radio

Exchange, which helps get those stories on the air. I’ve always been interested in having listeners create radio content, and used that concept in media projects like NPR’s Lost & Found Sound and This I Believe. Most of my work has been about bringing the citizen voice to public radio.

Q A

Why did you decide to start WCAI? I felt like this region needed its own service to reﬂect its own identity. A group of us rallied to create a station that sounded like Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and the South Coast, where we live. We asked WGBH to partner with us, and WGBH has been the champion for our local service and helped us put up the three transmitters—on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and in Brewster.

What do you see as the role of public radio in a community like yours? I think public radio pulls us all together and improves community by letting us know about each other. It introduces us to our neighbors. WCAI has an amazing team of talented staff and reporters, and they are entirely dedicated to serving their neighbors.

Q A

How does WCAI differ from other public radio stations? The ﬁrst interesting program choice we made was to introduce Sonic IDs: 30- to 60-second pieces of local people talking about their lives. They air all day long and give our station a unique sound. Voices keep popping up, talking about the history of the place, how we feel in the winter or the day our father took a cow across Vineyard Sound in a sailboat. Listening to these, you get the feeling that “Wow, we all live here together and these are our stories”—that’s the deﬁnition of local public radio. How did you get connected with The Moth? I had just ﬁnished up the This I Believe project when I met the folks at The Moth, and we felt an immediate kinship. The Moth Radio Hour runs counter to most media, which gets sliced into tinier and tinier fragments. The average bite length in news reports is shortening all the time. If you think about it, we started with telegraph messages, which had to be short, and now we

seem to be coming full circle with Twitter. But Moth stories are headed in the opposite direction. We have 17-minute-long unedited stories told by one person. Most people would have said that’s ridiculous, no one’s going to listen to that. But they would be wrong—people actually line up for hours to attend live Moth events, and most of them are young. This phenomenon gives me hope.

Q A

With all the new technology, why is public radio still so successful? You can still listen to the radio while you are doing something else. We’re all busy, but we can consume radio while we live our lives and while we drive our cars. Also, local public radio is where you are—it’s not coming in from a satellite or from some city far away, it’s connecting you to your environment. So many other systems disconnect you—they may connect you to the wider world, but they disconnect you from your place. As long as WCAI continues to provide a real reﬂection of the community, as long as it keeps introducing us to each other, and as long as it maintains a connection to its listeners that almost resembles friendship, I think our future is bright. WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture The World in Japan, Dealing with Disaster It’s been nearly ﬁve months since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Japan on March 11. It was one of the worst disasters the country has ever faced, particularly because of the resulting nuclear meltdowns and release of radioactive materials at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The World’s Marco Werman traveled to northern Japan and spent almost two weeks interviewing ofﬁcials,

industry professionals and the local people most affected by the disaster.

You visited the northern Japanese village of Iitate, a city that did not suffer major earthquake damage but did show signs of unsafe radiation levels. While you were there, townspeople were told they had to evacuate. What was it like speaking to people there? It was inspiring to see what home and community mean to people. When you’re settled, and there’s no threat of having to ﬂee, you take home for granted. And it was humbling to be so concerned about ﬁve hours of mild radiation exposure when these people had had to face it every day for almost three months.

You also visited the one of the most devastated areas of Japan, Ishinomaki. What was that like? Surreal and sorrowful. I kept staring at the wreckage and devastation, and felt unable to take it all in. The closest thing I’d ever seen were pictures of Hiroshima. Ishinomaki’s port was ﬂattened. People who had escaped on March 11 stood on the hill when the tsunami hit and watched as friends and homes were sucked instantly out to sea. I woke up the next morning after I visited the city, and the taste of the place was still in my mouth. It stayed there for several days.

What is your impression of how the local population is dealing with the disaster? Some are still in shock. Some have clear symptoms of PTSD. But they all have extraordinary dignity as they live out this temporary existence in the shelters. We must remember that these are communities with much the same standard of living as we have. They have strived like Americans to acquire some afﬂuence. And then it all gets wiped out in a single afternoon. They had a lot to lose. But the Japanese I met in the north, where the damage was the worst, are not feeling sorry for themselves. They’re trying to start again. And they’re getting a lot of help from volunteers from around Japan. That was very uplifting.

Q A

What is your big takeaway after visit- ing Japan? Two things occur to me. One, some Japanese are starting a national process of soul-searching, and beginning a discussion that I think is overdue here in the US. Several people I spoke with said that maybe Japan has drifted too far from its Buddhist moorings, that maybe the country doesn’t need to be so focused on mass production, mass consumption and mass waste. They told me that’s the reason they ended up with so many nuclear power plants, to provide the juice for their economy. And they’re ready to change. The second thing is that The World tried something innovative in terms of reporting: we sent a host into the ﬁeld to cover an unfolding story, and provided content not just for radio but also video and stills for online and broadcast. It changed the work ﬂow of a reporting assignment. I was joined by videographer Emily Taguchi who fed The World video on a daily basis. That provided strong content for our online users, and a compelling reason for listeners to “see” the radio story after they heard it. All Classical Tanglewood Tales

Tanglewood. The very name evokes a kaleidoscope of images. Picnics on the lawn. Majestic pines. Hayfields— sometimes overflowing with cars. The picturesque village of Lenox. Sudden downpours. And, at the heart of it all, incredible, indelible music-making. “There is no festival in the world that equals Tanglewood’s special combination of great musical art made in such a beautiful natural setting,” says Ben Roe, WGBH’s managing director for classical services. “Take a stroll through the grounds and you’ll hear echoes of music history with every footfall.” And that’s no exaggeration. This is the place, after all, where 14-year-old Midori famously made front-page headlines in her Tanglewood debut by calmly swapping her brokenstring violin with the concertmaster’s—not once, but twice—during a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade. Where Bernstein himself made his famous final conducting appearance in August of 1990, with a poignant performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. For Kurt Masur’s last concert as music director of the New York Philharmonic (yes, it happened at Tanglewood!) it was Beethoven’s Third. Or, just three years ago, the Beaux Arts Trio chose the beautiful confines of Seiji Ozawa Hall to cap the ensemble’s brilliant 53-year career with a farewell concert broadcast and webcast across the nation. But Tanglewood isn’t just about farewells. It’s also been the site of some notable beginnings. Aaron Copland’s Third Symphony (sometimes called “The Great American Symphony”) was written at the festival in 1946. Roe remembers his own beginnings at the renowned venue. “The first time I came to Tanglewood as a broadcaster was for the opening of Seiji Ozawa Hall in the summer of 1994.” Adds Roe, “The BSO staff set my NPR crew up in the maintenance shed—and then told me that our temporary office was the same place where a young conducting student named Seiji Ozawa slept on the floor when he arrived at Tanglewood in 1960.” What are your favorite Tanglewood moments?
