As WGBH gets ready to close its fiscal year on August 31, I want to thank you for your support, and share with you some of the stories of people touched by our public media work—work you make possible on television, radio, the Web and in our community. John Wise is a biology professor at Southern Methodist University who recently told us about the impact of Nova’s evolution-themed programs and website. “Here in the heart of Texas, battles over evolution are fought every day,” says John, who welcomed Nova to SMU’s Dallas campus for an evolutionrelated screening and discussion on the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. “I’m glad to have it in my classroom, and in my corner.” Twelve-year-old Minnesotan Connor Gordon is a longtime fan of our Arthur TV series and website, and an aspiring artist. This past season, we invited viewers to create a new Arthur character with a disability that might make life different, but no less fun. Connor’s brainchild, 10-year-old wheelchair basketball player Lydia Fox, was one of 8,500 submissions. “She doesn’t want anybody to notice her wheelchair,” Connor explains. “She just wants to be herself.” Winning the contest, Connor says, “has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.” His next dream? To become a professional cartoonist. Amy Kingery of Powhatan, Virginia was spurred to write after watching Frontline’s Obama’s War last fall. With her son Thomas deployed in Afghanistan’s Helmand province with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, the Frontline report about the company’s efforts at armed diplomacy struck close to home. “By showing the reality of this war,” Amy says, “Frontline is helping all of us look past the headlines and make informed decisions about where we go from here.” Lexington, Massachusetts psychologist and poet Marian Kaplun Shapiro has a passion for classical music, and 99.5 All Classical. “I’m an old music major,” says Marian, whose father and grandfather both were musicians. “I’ve learned a lot listening to 99.5. I heard a fugue by Mendelssohn—who knew!—and an early Stravinsky I hadn’t known about. I particularly enjoy the programs I can’t get anywhere else, like In Performance [99.5’s daily 1pm spotlight on live recordings]. I always make a point of listening to that when I’m in the car.” Every day, WGBH is able to create and deliver media that matters and revealing programs to millions of people, thanks to your generosity. Have a story to share? We’d love to hear from you (wgbh.org/yourstory)!

Tune in throughout August for a wide range of programs, including some very special member favorites! Below are just a few of the highlights. Check wgbh.org/schedules to see when your favorites are airing. Aretha Franklin Presents: Soul Rewind Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, returns to public television in an all-new festival of original artist Soul Hits of the 1960s, plus some special ’70s love ballads. A treasure trove of long-lost archival material has been recovered from England, Germany and France, along with liveperformance footage from local television stations throughout the US. Easy Yoga for Arthritis with Peggy Cappy No teacher is better at showing you how to use yoga to help relieve pain than Peggy Cappy. Arthritis—which commonly affects hips, knees and fingers—is the leading cause of disability in the US. Cappy demonstrates how yoga can relieve stiffness, reduce pain and fatigue, and improve health. Clay Aiken—Tried and True: Live! Chart-topping American Idol vocalist Clay Aiken brings his clarion voice and personal interpretations to new arrangements of iconic songs, including “Mack the Knife,” “It’s Impossible,” “Moon River” and a duet with Broadway star Linda Eder of Roy Orbison’s classic lament “Crying.” Fellow American Idol star Ruben Studdard guest stars in this special, taped live before a sold-out audience on March 11, 2010 in Raleigh, NC, Aiken’s hometown. David Garrett Rock Symphonies Known in Britain as “the David Beckham of the violin,” David Garrett has touched hearts and astounded audiences around the world. From Vivaldi to Queen to Michael Jackson, the young German violinist weaves classical standards with rock and pop favorites to deliver a thrilling performance taped at Berlin’s open-air Wuhlheide Theater that will appeal to all ages. Marvin Hamlisch Presents: The Way We Were—The ’70s Marvin Hamlisch hosts a television special featuring performers re-creating their biggest hits from the 1970s: BJ Thomas, Three Dog Night, Debby Boone, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr., Ray Stevens, Freda Payne, Peaches and Herb, Jonathan Edwards, Gloria Gaynor and Hamlisch himself. The concert was recorded March 17, 2010 at The Bezemes Family Theater at Lindenwood University’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts in St. Charles, Missouri.

Max Raabe & The Palast Orchester: Tonight or Never In their first PBS special, Max Raabe & Palast Orchester present highlights from their show “Heute Nacht oder nie,” recorded live at Berlin’s historic Admiralspalast, Europe’s largest and most famous Revue Theatre in the ’20s. Founded in 1986 by charismatic baritone Max Raabe, the singer and the orchestra embody the high style and musical glory of the ’20s and ’30s with their repertoire of German and American standards. Michel Legrand & Friends: 50 Years of Music & Movies Over the course of his 50-year career, Michel Legrand composed more than 200 film and television scores as well as several musicals. Jon Voight and Jennifer O’Neil host a concert to honor Legrand and his legendary work. Filmed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, the concert pays musical tribute to some of Legrand’s Academy Award-winning MGM movies, including Yentl, The Thomas Crown Affair and Summer of ’42. Performers include Quincy Jones, Dionne Warwick, Sting, George Benson, Patti Page, Steve Lawrence and Melissa Manchester. The Pretenders: Live in London With millions of albums sold and their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame secure, the Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde, Martin Chambers, James Walbourne, Nick Wilkinson and Eric Heywood) are a special band with a special place in history. Pretenders: Live in London captures one of their many electrifying performances from their 2009 world tour, filmed at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Seeing, Searching, Being William Segal (1904–2000) was a philosopher, publisher, writer and painter who searched relentlessly and compassionately for meaning in the chaotic and distracted time we call the 20th century. In the last decade of his life, Segal befriended the documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, and the two collaborated on an interior trilogy to ask the question: What is it that defines our true meaning in the world? Filmed in Segal’s art studio and garden, the first part of the trilogy focuses on Segal as he paints and discusses the creative process and the intimate personal and spiritual relationship between the artist and the work of art. Winged Migration The cameras of Jacques Perrin fly with migratory birds: geese, storks and cranes. The film begins with spring in France and the migration to the Arctic; the flight is a community event for each species. Once in the Arctic, it’s family time: courtship, nests, eggs, fledglings and first flight. Chicks must soon fly south through Europe and North America. Bad weather, hunters and pollution take their toll. With spare narration and few titles, the film offers a visually stunning bird’s-eye view of life on the wing.

Every so often a giant emerges on the stage of science, someone who transcends the narrow boundaries of a particular line of research and alters our perspective on the world. E.O. Wilson is such a man. While studying ants, Wilson struggled to comprehend the evolutionary forces that led workers to forage and soldiers to fight; in doing so, he became the architect of a controversial new discipline: sociobiology. His appreciation of the natural world has been a driving force for his worldwide conservation efforts. Wilson is an icon of our times: a lord of the ants who sought to explain nature on earth… and who now fights for its survival. 44 Antiques Roadshow Las Vegas, NV (Pt. 3) 9pm 2 Pedigree Dogs Exposed This provocative BBC film of the world of purebred dogs reveals the shocking tactics used by breeders to ensure perfection. Vaccines have changed the world, largely eradicating a series of terrible diseases, from smallpox to polio to diphtheria, and likely adding decades to most of our life spans. But despite the gains, and numerous scientific studies indicating vaccine safety, a growing movement of parents is fearful of vaccines. And in some American communities, significant numbers of parents have been rejecting vaccines altogether, raising new concerns about the return of vaccine-preventable diseases like measles and whooping cough. The score includes such classic songs as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Younger Than Springtime,” “Bali Ha’i,” “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” “A Wonderful Guy,” and “This Nearly Was Mine.” Lincoln Center Theater’s revival, directed by Bartlett Sher, won seven Tony Awards. Mexican American journalist María Elena Salinas is the most recognized Latina journalist in the United States. Salinas, the respected anchor of Univision’s nightly newscast since 1981, talks with Hinojosa about her professional and personal life, including her interviews with virtually every major world leader in the past 20 years, the struggle to raise her two daughters, and the discovery of a closely-held family secret. 44 Keeping Up Appearances 8pm 2 Nova Lizard Kings. Though they may look like dragons and inspire stories of man-eating, fire-spitting monsters with long claws, razor-sharp teeth and muscular, whip-like tails, these creatures are actually monitor lizards, the largest lizards to walk the planet. With their acute intelligence—including the ability to plan—these lizards are a very different kind of reptile, blurring the line between reptiles and mammals. And even though these bizarre reptiles haven’t changed all that much since the dinosaurs, they are a successful species, versatile at adapting to all kinds of settings.

9pm 2 Nova Arctic Dinosaurs. Most people imagine dinosaurs lurking in warm locales with swamps and jungles, dining on vegetation and each other. But Arctic Dinosaurs reveals that many species also thrived in the harsh environments of the north and south polar regions. Nova follows two high-stakes expeditions and the paleontologists who push the limits of science to unearth 70 million-year-old fossils buried in the vast Alaskan tundra. 44 Waking the Dead Thin Air (Pts. 1 and 2) 10pm 2 Nova The Four-Winged Dinosaur. Imagine a moment from the age of dinosaurs frozen in time: primitive birds, bees, insects, early mammals, the first known flowering plants and of course, dinosaurs, all exquisitely preserved in fine-grained fossils from China’s Liaoning Province. Volcanic eruptions killed and buried victims quickly in this dinosaur Pompeii, capturing soft, fragile features not normally preserved in fossils—notably the feathers on animals that had never been known to have them before. Now, with state-of-the-art animation to bring this lost world to life, Nova investigates the mysterious feathered dinosaurs that are challenging old ideas about the origin of bird flight. 11pm 2 Charlie Rose 44 PBS NewsHour

From the pristine wilderness of Alaska to the Upper Mississippi River Valley, American Eagle goes behind the scenes and into the nest to provide the ultimate bird’s eye view into the private life of an American icon. In the 1960s, the bald eagle was on the brink of extinction caused by the pesticide DDT and other human pressures. Following their protection as an endangered species, bald eagles have come roaring back. But even in the best of times, life in the wild for these birds is a surprisingly tough struggle. 44 Frontline Flying Cheap. Frontline investigates the crash of Continental 3407 in Buffalo, NY, and discovers a dramatically changed airline industry. The rise of the regionals and arrival of low-cost carriers have been a huge boon to consumers, and the industry insists that the skies remain safe. But many insiders are worried that now the aviation system is being stretched beyond its capacity to deliver service that is both cheap and safe. 9pm 2 Nature Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air. Hummingbirds take extraordinary to a whole new level. They are the smallest warmblooded creatures on the planet, but they are also among the fastest. With wings that beat up to 200 times every second, they are among nature’s most accomplished athletes—the only birds able to hover, fly backwards, and even upside down. 44 P.O.V. 2 Nature Silence of the Bees. In the winter of 2006, a strange phenomenon fell upon honeybee hives across the country. Without a trace, millions of bees vanished from their hives. A precious pollinator of fruits and vegetables, the disappearing bees left billions of dollars of crops at risk and threatened our food supply. The epidemic set researchers scrambling to discover why honeybees were dying in record numbers—and to stop the epidemic in its tracks before it spread further. 44 The New Recruits (See 8/16 at 10pm) 11pm 2 Charlie Rose 44 PBS NewsHour 10pm

Deadly Force Behind the enduring images of heroic rescues undertaken by the New Orleans Police Department in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there is another story of law enforcement in crisis, even out of control. Law & Disorder—a yearlong, ongoing collaboration among Frontline, ProPublica and the New Orleans TimesPicayune—investigates charges that NOPD officers inappropriately used lethal force against New Orleans citizens and then tried to cover up their actions. Airing days before the fifth anniversary of one of the deadliest hurricanes in US history and drawing from reports published in a real-time online investigation, Frontline takes a fresh look at how the NOPD performed when the rules of civilized society collapsed. Inspector Lewis Returns Kevin Whately returns as Inspector Lewis in a third season of the popular detective series. In five new episodes, Lewis and his young partner, DS Hathaway (Laurence Fox, A Room With a View), continue solving cases in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. In the first episode, Lewis is shocked to encounter a rock star believed to have died years before. Could her sudden reappearance and attempt at a comeback album have any connection to the murder of a young orphan nearby? Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous) guest stars as the rocker Lewis once idolized. Masterpiece Mystery! Ken Burns’s Baseball: The Tenth Inning
Thousands of bats, three home-run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series Baseball. Now, Burns and co-director Lynn Novick update the series with The Tenth Inning. Beginning with a crippling strike that alienated millions of fans, this new film brings the tumultuous story of our national pastime—including the Red Sox 2004 World Series victory—up to the present. It celebrates baseball’s new Golden Age—an era of unprecedented home-run totals, popularity and prosperity—and sheds light on one of the game’s darkest chapters—the steroid era. The two-part, four-hour film examines the compelling stories of Joe Torre, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, Cal Ripken Jr. and Barry Bonds and features insightful commentary from an eclectic lineup of writers, broadcasters, fans and all-stars. God in America
How has religious belief shaped American history? What role have religious ideas and spiritual experience played in shaping the social, political and cultural life of what has become the world’s most religiously diverse nation? God in America, a presentation of American Experience and Frontline, explores the historical role of religion in the public life of the United States. The six-hour series interweaves documentary footage, historical dramatization and interviews with religious historians. November
Dogs Decoded
Dogs have been domesticated for longer than any other animal on the planet, and humans have developed a unique relationship with these furry friends. We treat our pets like a part of the family, and feel that they can understand us in a way other animals can’t. Now, Nova takes a look at new research revealing what dog lovers have suspected all along: Dogs have an uncanny ability to read and respond to human emotions. Humans, in turn, respond to dogs with the same hormone responsible for bonding mothers to their babies. How did this incredible relationship between humans and dogs come to be? Nova investigates new discoveries in genetics that are illuminating the origin of dogs—with big implications for the evolution of human culture as well.

Jazz Loft
Photographer W. Eugene Smith moved into a loft at 821 Sixth Avenue, in the heart of New York’s Flower District, in 1957. The place had already become a hangout for artists, writers and especially jazz musicians, who rehearsed and jammed there. Among the visitors to the loft: Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, Steve Swallow, Mose Allison, Bob Brookmeyer and hundreds more over a period of about eight years. Smith documented the activity there in photographs and audio tapes. In this the first of four one-hour specials, Sara Fishko and WNYC, in collaboration with partners at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and the New York Public Library, showcase some of the tapes of loft life discovered in W. Eugene Smith’s vast archive. Sun, 8/29 at 9pm

All Classical
99.5 All Classical is now also broadcast on 96.3 Back Bay/Beacon Hill
Cathy Fuller, Host of Classical Music with Cathy Fuller One day, years ago, when my youngest daughter was still small and wide-eyed, we were driving through the sunlit pine trees of Dover, Massachusetts. Strapped into the back seat, she heard Debussy’s lush and atmospheric Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun on the radio. With the windows open and the summer light filtering through the cedars, she absorbed all of it with the enviable, unburdened tenderness that allows children to feel things so completely.“Mama, look…the music matches the day!” And I could feel the best part of my brain locking that moment away like some profoundly precious 10-second film. Since I’ve been in the world of broadcasting, I’ve heard many listener stories about similar magical moments when the visual and the aural intersect. A driver, stuck at a stoplight, is compelled to focus for a moment on the longing gestures that are unfolding in one of Mozart’s exquisite slow
movements. His eye catches the tempo of a perfect, oblivious cloud crossing silently above the chaos of the crowd in the crosswalk, He has a moment of altered perception. Elevated sensibility. An inexplicable tenderness pours through him, and he suddenly feels deeply human. A solitary walker pushes through the wind to a cross-campus classroom, feeling the brittleness of ice under his feet. As he plods, earbuds in place, the blue air is filled by the bright whistle of Olivier Messiaen’s birds—remarkable piano utterances that lovingly and surprisingly imitate their songs. His eyes move across the shapes of the frozen trees and his perception of them suddenly changes. He sees them as hauntingly beautiful. He has an inexplicable sense that he and the landscape belong together. These unexpected collisions of sight and sound make for powerful moments. I’ve had so many of them I’ve lost count. I think they act as strong reminders of the relevancy and necessity of art in our everyday lives. Nothing else can work such transformative magic with such a profound effect. Sometimes it only takes a radio, a window, and a sensitive soul. Tune in Classical Music with Cathy Fuller on weekdays at 9am

The Bach Hour
J.S. Bach: Cantata BWV 199 “Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut”
Host Cathy Fuller features the Austrian composer Hans Gál, who was born on August 5, 1890 in Brunn and died in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1987. Gál was a leading composer among those whose music was banned by the Nazis in the 1930s. He had reached a breakthrough in popularity in 1923 with his second opera, Die Heilige Ente, premiered in Düsseldorf under Georg Szell and performed in some 20 opera houses. After Hitler’s accession to power in 1933, his works were instantly banned. He emigrated to Edinburgh, where he helped establish the Edinburgh International Festival and was appointed Lecturer at Edinburgh University. Thu, 8/5 at 10am
What’s on 99.5 All Classical
Summer Music Festivals
One of the most powerful musical collaborations in Boston’s memory was that of Craig Smith, founder and director of Emmanuel Music, and mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who died in 2006. And when sparked by the innovative staging by Peter Sellars, that collaboration reached new heights in Bach’s Cantata No. 199, an emotionally intense journey of pain and resolution in the face of death. Hosted by Brian McCreath. Sun, 8/15 at 8pm

Radio Spotlight Points of View Each weekday morning and afternoon on 89.7 WGBH, you can hear short commentaries from some of the area’s sharpest minds. From the political to the personal, 89.7’s commentators deliver their unique perspectives on both the news of the day and the big picture. While their viewpoints and backgrounds vary, says WGBH radio producer Steve Young, they’re all “strong thinkers and writers.” Some are well known figures, like Kerry Healey. “Healey has a remarkable way of approaching partisan issues in a civil and slightly ironic way that is entirely unpredictable,” Young says of the former Massachusetts Lt. Governor, who is currently working with the US State Department providing legal training and educational opportunities to Afghan lawyers and judges. Others are less famous, but are well known in the community, like Kelly Bates, an activist, attorney and regular guest on Basic Black, who impressed Young with her forthrightness and clear thinking on difficult issues, particularly issues of race and gender. Bates is currently the Executive Director of Access Strategies Fund, a foundation that supports organizations fighting for social justice and expanding the democratic process within underserved communities. Healey and Bates recently took a few moments out of their busy schedules to share their perspectives on doing radio commentaries for 89.7 WGBH with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel.
Q
How do you see your role as a 89.7 WGBH commentator? KB I really try to focus on relevant and timely local issues that have national implications. For example, I have covered the deeply moving stories of Boston mothers who have lost their children to gun violence, either as victims or perpetrators of violence. In this economy, we are seeing acts of violence and desperation all over the country and Boston is no exception. It is an honor to give voice to stories that are often untold. Additionally, I have 20 years of political experience as an attorney, legislative lobbyist and community activist. I think my fascination with the world of politics comes through in my pieces. Like our listeners, I have a love/hate relationship with politics. I am always trying to expose the beauty and disorder in the political system. I also attempt to engage our listeners in political issues that are hiding under the radar. 26 Schedules, program info, playlists: 995allclassical.org
I like to think that my background as a woman coming from a biracial background gives fresh voice to issues related to race and gender. To be African American and Irish in Boston with its history of race and immigrant relations gives me a unique perspective. KH I hope I bring an informed, right-of-center take on local issues and challenges, but also a deep interest in the world beyond Massachusetts, especially our nation’s involvement in Afghanistan and Central Asia.
Q
What do you like most about this new gig? KB I enjoy that radio is very personal. I imagine that people are listening to me in very private places, such as their cars or living rooms. I try to bring a very personal tone to my commentaries. I often link stories about my own life to the issues I am discussing in my commentaries. I try to make a personal connection with our listeners by striving for honesty, intimacy and humility. KH I love being free to discuss openly and honestly what’s really been on my mind, whether it’s the morality of gambling, the vagaries of Massachusetts education policy, Turkmenistan, my frustration with federal bureaucracy or Republican infighting. I write about many of the things I cared about when I was in office, but now I am able to step outside the “political correctness” that afflicts most discussions with current elected officials and speak only for myself, not an office or a Party.
Q
What’s the biggest challenge?
KB It’s not easy to share opinions that you know others may disagree with, particularly on issues that are very controversial such as race, immigration and taxes. But I try not to play it safe because public radio is all about confronting tough public
questions and issues. I am a better leader in my current position as Executive Director of Access Strategies Fund, a philanthropic foundation that builds movement and resources for underserved communities, because I am more fearless than ever about sharing my views in public spaces. KH The 400-word limit!
Q
What do you like about the new, news-centric 89.7 WGBH? KB I appreciate the local focus of the news station—the emphasis on local issues that affect real people’s lives. And it is done without glitz and gossip, which in this day and age is refreshing. KH People in Boston spend a lot of time stuck in traffic. Being in a car with the radio on often gives people that rarest gift: space and time to think. WGBH’s listening area is genuinely one of the intellectually richest places on the planet. WGBH radio draws on the diversity and depth of interests in the greater Boston community to create programming that does not pander or talk down to its listeners. In the end, what’s special about 89.7 is its listeners; their curiosity and intelligence are the inspiration for the station’s phenomenal programming. Listen to the commentaries weekdays at 7:30am and 5:45pm on 89.7 WGBH, or anytime at wgbh.org/localvoices. 89.7 WGBH’s stable of commentators will grow and change in the coming months, but will always reflect a diversity of thoughtful views.
