One year ago, WGBH launched the most ambitious expansion of our radio services since our 1951 broadcast debut, live from Symphony Hall. Our acquisition of WCRB in fall 2009 allowed us to create 99.5 All Classical, our 24/7 classical service on radio and online, and to re-imagine 89.7 WGBH as Boston’s NPR station for news and culture. We’ve come a long way in one year, thanks to your support. On 99.5, we’ve more than doubled our Boston Symphony Orchestra offerings. Now you can experience this Boston treasure every single week, including this month’s final concert of the fall season: James Levine conducting world-renowned, local composer John Harbison’s Symphony No. 2 (see page 26 for details). This is just one of the ways WGBH is showcasing the classical riches of our region—in our studios and at festivals and concerts across New England—introduced by our expanded roster of knowledgeable and accessible hosts, on air and online. “The WGBH website just went through a thorough redesign,” explains host Brian McCreath, who also curates 99.5’s Web content at 995allclassical.org. “It allows us to bring you more of what we do, from on-demand availability for Live from Fraser, The Bach Hour and other programs to our new Host Notes feature, where you can learn more about some of our daily programs and share your comments.” We’ve been equally busy on the news side of 89.7 WGBH. Many of you have taken the time to share your enthusiasm for The Emily Rooney Show and The Callie Crossley Show and the perspective they provide on issues and stories that affect our region, including up-to-the-minute coverage of this campaign season. Thanks, too, for your strong support for our new enterprise-reporting unit, which has shined a much-needed spotlight on everything from human trafficking to the impact of federal fishing policies on New England’s fishing industry. From our new morning hosts to Nova Minutes, we’re doing all we can to feed your appetite for news. At the heart of our news efforts lies The World, the WGBH co-production with the BBC World Service and PRI that has changed the landscape of international reporting for American audiences. Today, The World is “appointment radio” for millions of listeners nationwide, thanks in large measure to its very talented, longtime executive producer, Bob Ferrante. After 50 years in the “news biz,” Bob is retiring this month. He’s put his mark on many fabled news productions, from our own Ten O’Clock News to the CBS News Nightwatch to NPR’s Morning Edition. “Bob has helped his reporters tell some of the most important stories of this country and the world for more than a half century,” says The World’s Lisa Mullins. “Bob, for everything you’ve imparted from your head, your gut and your heart, thanks for it all!” And that’s from all of us. Our radio services are exciting works in progress. I invite you to listen. And then go to wgbh.org/contact and please let us know what you think!

Anne falls into a series of scrapes (and off a roof), makes a bosom friend, searches (and finds) several kindred spirits…and Matthew and Marilla discover that their lives have become a great deal richer now that Anne is at Green Gables. ADD & Loving It?! Actor Patrick McKenna (right) is after the truth. “Everything you think you know about ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is wrong,” says McKenna. In this uplifting and entertaining documentary, he and comedian Rick Green (left) talk to researchers, specialists and doctors about both conditions. Our spacious suite at Newbury Court meant my husband Bill and I could give up our big house without leaving the Steinway Grand piano behind. As I was a former piano teacher and Bill, the Personnel Director of the BSO, music is central to our lives. Living at Newbury Court means we have more time to pursue our most precious interests and to be with family and friends. Whether it’s a workout in the gym or an evening at Symphony Hall, it’s a joy to come home to Newbury Court.
I have Newbury Court. Do you?

Radio Spotlight Hosts’ Holiday Picks for 2010 Need a gift idea for your friends and family? We’ve asked a cross-section of WGBH Radio personalities to suggest a few ideas. Jared Bowen The Emily Rooney Show/Center Stage A Christmas Carol (1938) Hugh Harmon, Director DVD, Warner Home Video, 2005
Celeste Headlee, The Takeaway Weekend Wodehouse, Introduction by Hilaire Belloc Book, Hutchinson, 1986 “Wodehouse is the perfect antidote to toxic politics, a poisonous economy, you name it. He was an incredibly prolific writer, but Hilaire Belloc called him the best prose writer of his age. Perhaps also the funniest.” John Hockenberry, The Takeaway Caravaggio: The Complete Paintings Sebastian Schutze Book, Taschen America, 2009
“I find my cinematic tidings of comfort and joy in any version of A Christmas Carol from George C. Scott to The Muppets. My favorite is my first encounter: the 1938 version starring Reginald Owen as Scrooge. It’s evocative, moving and joyous.” Laura Carlo, Classical Music with Laura Carlo My Nine Lives, Leon Fleisher and Anne Midgette Memoir, Doubleday, 2010 “Here the world-renowned pianist talks about his career as a performer, and then as a conductor. Fleisher discusses his decades of dealing with a hand ailment, and then his return to two-hand piano after successful Botox injections. He writes in the language of the layman, with self-deprecating humor and surprising behind-the-scenes stories.” Brian O’Donovan, A Celtic Sojourn Wintersong, Sarah McLachlan CD, Arista, 2006 “One of my favorite holiday CDs of the increasingly bottomless choices available is Wintersong by Sarah McLachlan. Wintersong mixes well-known and original songs, and has a couple of brilliantly produced covers perfect for this time of year: John Lennon’s ‘War Is Over,’ and an exquisite version of Joni Mitchell’s classic ‘River’.” Steve Schwartz, Jazz on WGBH with Steve Schwartz Jazz, Herman Leonard Book, Bloomsbury USA, 2010 “Jazz is a new book by the photographer Herman Leonard, who died this past August. The book includes his iconic pictures of Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Dexter Gordon and others but also includes scores of images never seen before that Leonard himself chose. A beautiful tribute to the late photographic genius.” The Jazz Loft Project, Sam Stephenson Book, Knopf, 2009 “This book chronicles the Jazz Loft building, located on 6th Avenue in New York City. The Jazz Loft was started by photographer W. Eugene Smith and was a second home to hundreds of jazz musicians who came to jam with each other, after hours. Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, Jim Hall and Chick Corea were all a part of this scene from 1957 to 1965. Includes hundreds of photographs and interviews with those who were there.”

“This is quite simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen or touched. It brings to life a mysterious genius.” Bomb Power, Garry Wills Book, Penguin Press, 2010 “This is the book I’ve been recommending to everyone. It’s Garry Wills’s brilliant analysis of how the nuclear age has essentially consumed the US Constitution in a facade of National Security.” Brian McCreath, Classical Music with Brian McCreath Puer Natus Est, Stile Antico CD, Harmonia Mundi, 2010 “When this young British ensemble performed their American debut in the 2009 Boston Early Music Festival, their stellar reputation was confirmed by their gorgeous performance of pieces inspired by The Song of Songs. Their new recording focuses on Advent and Christmas, anchored by Thomas Tallis’s Missa Puer Natus Est, but ingeniously programmed on the CD to intersperse works by other Elizabethan composers, including William Byrd, John Sheppard and John Taverner. It’s simultaneously beautiful, calming and exhilarating.” Cathy Fuller, Classical Music with Cathy Fuller Bach: Complete Keyboard Concertos Schiff, Serkin, Chamber Orchestra of Europe CD Box Set, Decca, 2010 “Bach’s keyboard concertos offer his soulful flights of ecstasy and his long phrases of heartbreaking beauty. Decca has just released the complete keyboard concertos with pianists Andras Schiff and Peter Serkin. A beautiful four-CD boxed set full of the elemental beauty that no one should ever live without!” iLuv iHD171 HD Radio Receiver with iPod Dock shop.npr.org “HD radios are ever-evolving. They’ve become very sleek and, for many of our listeners, a real solution. Have a look at the NPR Shop’s collection of HD possibilities for someone in your life who will be thrilled to have 99.5 All Classical resonating with crystal-clear sound throughout the house all year long!”
Bob Seay, Morning Edition The Christmas Revels, December 17–29, 2010 Sanders Theatre, Harvard University “It’s one of the most original and beautiful holiday pageants I have ever been to, and I especially enjoy the audience sing-along of holiday music.” Jordan Weinstein, All Things Considered The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, David Mitchell Novel, Random House, 2010 “A spellbinding historical novel of life in 18th-century Dejima, the walled island outpost of the Dutch East Indies Company in Nagasaki Harbor.” Cutting for Stone, Abraham Verghese Novel, Vintage Reprint Edition, 2010 “As if Salman Rushdie wrote John Irving’s Cider House Rules…a sensitive, epic journey of a life-trajectory from east India to Addis Ababa to New York with the practice of medicine a constant thread.”
Drood, Dan Simmons Novel, Back Bay Books, Reprint Edition 2010 “A supernatural tale of the imagined relationship of Charles Dickens and his collaborator, Wilkie Collins. Inspired by Dickens’s last, uncompleted novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” Marco Werman, The World Seu Jorge and Almaz, Seu Jorge and Almaz CD, Now Again, July 2010 “The Brazilian singer has become a master at reworking retro pop classics. Sometimes he does it with an expected Brazilian lilt. Other times, Jorge is unpredictable. Check out the fuzzed-out lo-fi magic he performs on ‘Saudosa Bahia’ or the trippiness he brings to Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’.” Ponte Duro The Fania All Stars Story Fania All Stars CD Box Set, Fania Records, 2010 “For fans—and wannabee fans—of Latin music, this is four CDs of the original Latin jam band, the house band for Fania records. Descargas, guajiras, tracks from the historic concert at Yankee Stadium, and a previously unreleased 17-minute live jam with Stevie Wonder. It’s insanely cheveré.”

The Vagabond By Alan McLellan, Producer 99.5 All Classical
Sometimes in life it seems that everything lines up. In preparing to rekindle my singing career with an appearance on the Cantata Singers chamber series, I had been listening to the great Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel on my iPod, especially his interpretation of Vaughan Williams’s richly evocative “Songs of Travel.” What a picture the composer paints—in music—of the carefree wanderer of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem striding across the moor, taking life as it comes, without a care in the world! And what an amazing communicator Terfel is, bringing this character to life! On Sunday, it would be my turn to engage with this music. On Saturday night, I attended opening night at the Boston Symphony—a night of Wagner. Much to my delight, the featured artist was none other than my iPod companion, Bryn Terfel! So I had the added pleasure of seeing the artist in person, his tall frame looming over the orchestra, dominating the scene. This time, instead of an intrepid wanderer, he became Hans Sachs, the master singer in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, the god Wotan in Die Walküre, and the mysterious sea captain in The Flying Dutchman. His powerful voice soared, but it was the directness of his approach to the music that impressed me the most, as each character came to life onstage. So you might think that as a middle-aged, light baritone I would be discouraged by the prospect of interpreting The Vagabond myself after all this exposure to a master singer. Not so! I went on stage with a light heart and a spring in my step—all I needed to do was to be that wanderer. Classical Music with Laura Carlo
