One year ago, WGBH launched the most ambitious expansion of our radio services since our 1951 broadcast debut, live from Symphony Hall. Our acquisition of WCRB in fall 2009 allowed us to create 99.5 All Classical, our 24/7 classical service on radio and online, and to re-imagine 89.7 WGBH as Boston’s NPR station for news and culture. We’ve come a long way in one year, thanks to your support. On 99.5, we’ve more than doubled our Boston Symphony Orchestra offerings. Now you can experience this Boston treasure every single week, including this month’s final concert of the fall season: James Levine conducting world-renowned, local composer John Harbison’s Symphony No. 2 (see page 26 for details). This is just one of the ways WGBH is showcasing the classical riches of our region—in our studios and at festivals and concerts across New England—introduced by our expanded roster of knowledgeable and accessible hosts, on air and online. “The WGBH website just went through a thorough redesign,” explains host Brian McCreath, who also curates 99.5’s Web content at 995allclassical.org. “It allows us to bring you more of what we do, from on-demand availability for Live from Fraser, The Bach Hour and other programs to our new Host Notes feature, where you can learn more about some of our daily programs and share your comments.” We’ve been equally busy on the news side of 89.7 WGBH. Many of you have taken the time to share your enthusiasm for The Emily Rooney Show and The Callie Crossley Show and the perspective they provide on issues and stories that affect our region, including up-to-the-minute coverage of this campaign season. Thanks, too, for your strong support for our new enterprise-reporting unit, which has shined a much-needed spotlight on everything from human trafficking to the impact of federal fishing policies on New England’s fishing industry. From our new morning hosts to Nova Minutes, we’re doing all we can to feed your appetite for news. At the heart of our news efforts lies The World, the WGBH co-production with the BBC World Service and PRI that has changed the landscape of international reporting for American audiences. Today, The World is “appointment radio” for millions of listeners nationwide, thanks in large measure to its very talented, longtime executive producer, Bob Ferrante. After 50 years in the “news biz,” Bob is retiring this month. He’s put his mark on many fabled news productions, from our own Ten O’Clock News to the CBS News Nightwatch to NPR’s Morning Edition. “Bob has helped his reporters tell some of the most important stories of this country and the world for more than a half century,” says The World’s Lisa Mullins. “Bob, for everything you’ve imparted from your head, your gut and your heart, thanks for it all!” And that’s from all of us. Folk Rewind—My Music Presented by John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful (Do You Believe In Magic), Folk Rewind features a treasure trove of historical footage that has not been seen in more than four decades, plus new performances by artists who are still appearing in concert today. Riverdance—Live from Beijing It’s been 15 years since Riverdance ﬁrst stomped its way onto the world stage, thrilling millions of people around the globe. In December 2009, Riverdance embarked on a 12-city tour of China, which is a ﬁrst for any international show. Chinese audiences loved it: it played to full houses in all 12 cities. Nature: Christmas in Yellowstone As snow falls and Christmas lights glow in Jackson Hole, WY, a holiday season of a different sort settles in just beyond the town, in the great winter world of Yellowstone. Nonna, Tell Me A Story: Lidia’s Christmas Kitchen Celebrated chef Lidia Bastianich shares one of her fondest childhood memories: decorating her very own edible Christmas tree. A mix of storytelling, cooking instruction and imaginative animation, this Christmas special shares a message with all families that goes beyond the holiday, helping to teach the importance of not being wasteful, while encouraging an understanding and appreciation of nature. Rick Steves’ European Christmas Rick Steves and his public television crew bring home a vivid and intimate look at how seven diverse cultures celebrate Christmas. In this uplifting and entertaining documentary, he and comedian Rick Green (left) talk to researchers, specialists and doctors about both conditions. Voices from the Basement Filmmaker Michael Bavaro captures the stories of Boston’s beloved 100-year-old icon: the original Filene’s Basement. The Brahmins of Beacon Hill stood in line with the waitresses from Durgin Park with equal access to the same high-quality, discounted merchandise for which The Basement is known worldwide.

Concordia College, a small Lutheran evangelical school on the prairie, has had anything but a small vision when it comes to celebrating music. With a combined choir and orchestra of more than 450 students, a Concordia College Christmas concert attracts crowds from all faiths to celebrate the season and the promise it holds. Our spacious suite at Newbury Court meant my husband Bill and I could give up our big house without leaving the Steinway Grand piano behind. As I was a former piano teacher and Bill, the Personnel Director of the BSO, music is central to our lives. Living at Newbury Court means we have more time to pursue our most precious interests and to be with family and friends. WGBH kicks off the evening with a live concert from the Berklee College of Music featuring Lionel Loueke. Loueke’s musical pursuits have taken him from his home country of Benin to Ivory Coast, Paris, Berklee and, ultimately, the Blue Note label. Sometimes in life it seems that everything lines up. In preparing to rekindle my singing career with an appearance on the Cantata Singers chamber series, I had been listening to the great Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel on my iPod, especially his interpretation of Vaughan Williams’s richly evocative “Songs of Travel.” What a picture the composer paints—in music—of the carefree wanderer of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem striding across the moor, taking life as it comes, without a care in the world! And what an amazing communicator Terfel is, bringing this character to life! On Sunday, it would be my turn to engage with this music. On Saturday night, I attended opening night at the Boston Symphony—a night of Wagner. Much to my delight, the featured artist was none other than my iPod companion, Bryn Terfel! So I had the added pleasure of seeing the artist in person, his tall frame looming over the orchestra, dominating the scene. This time, instead of an intrepid wanderer, he became Hans Sachs, the master singer in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, the god Wotan in Die Walküre, and the mysterious sea captain in The Flying Dutchman. His powerful voice soared, but it was the directness of his approach to the music that impressed me the most, as each character came to life onstage. So you might think that as a middle-aged, light baritone I would be discouraged by the prospect of interpreting The Vagabond myself after all this exposure to a master singer. Not so! I went on stage with a light heart and a spring in my step—all I needed to do was to be that wanderer. Classical Music with Laura Carlo

Join host Ron Della Chiesa for the last of 2010’s live BSO Saturday night broadcasts. With this program, the Boston Symphony concludes one symphony cycle with Robert Schumann’s Second (performed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth) and continues another, the ﬁrst-ever cycle of the symphonies of John Harbison, with his Second. Written originally for the San Francisco Symphony, this is one of Harbison’s few works that has never been played by the BSO.
