Whatever your holiday tradition—and there are many in this nation of immigrants—chances are you’ll be spending time gathered ’round a table sharing a special meal with family and friends. that is the simple and deliciously interesting premise of a new special co-produced by WGBH (see page 14) featuring PBs culinary expert Lidia Bastianich, who explores the American immigrant experience through the revelry of the holidays. “At the heart of this special is my own immigrant experience,” says Lidia, who came to the Us at the age of 12 after spending two years in a political refugee camp. As she crisscrosses the country to experience different holiday traditions firsthand—from a mexican-style Christmas celebration in san Antonio to a Chinese new Year’s dinner in san Francisco to a Passover seder in new York City—Lidia listens as multiple generations of Americans explain the importance of food in preserving culture. We’re also exploring cultural traditions through another lens: music. throughout the month (see pages 26–27), our Classical new england service brings you powerful performances in celebration of the holidays. Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 In 2010, Les Misérables celebrated its 25th birthday. To mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London. Paul Simon: Live at Webster Hall, New York

In June 2011, Paul Simon and his eight-piece band filled the stage at New York City’s historic Webster Hall for the culmination of a sold-out, two-month US tour. This resulting concert special features a career retrospective showcasing a set list that includes such classics as “Kodachrome,” “Mother and Child Reunion,” “Gone at Last” and “The Obvious Child” as well as songs from Simon’s recently released new album So Beautiful or So What, including “Dazzling Blue,” “The Afterlife” and the album’s propulsive title track.

Victor Borge: Comedy in Music!

Hailed as a child prodigy, Victor Borge began his performing career with a piano debut in 1926 at the age of 17. For eight decades, he never was out of the spotlight. this new Borge special features both recently rediscovered material and his most memorable skits, including rare archival footage from The Andy Williams Show and The Perry Como Show not seen in more than 40 years, a classic performance from the Ford theater of “Phonetic Punctuation” (with President and mrs. reagan) in the audience and touching, heartfelt reminiscences from his five children of their favorite Borge routines.

Lidia Celebrates America

Four Holidays, Four Traditions

Join celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich, author of the new Lidia’s Italy in America cookbook, as she travels across America in a celebration of culture through food in this new WGBH co-produced special that explores the American immigrant experience through holiday traditions. The adventure begins in New York City, where Lidia prepares a traditional Italian Christmas Eve La Vigilia— feast of the seven fishes—with actor Stanley Tucci. Next stop is San Antonio, to honor the holiday Mexican-style with four generations of the Cortez family, where Christmas is about making traditional Mexican American tamales and decadent desserts. In San Francisco, Lidia makes Chinese dumplings with the Fong-Torres family to observe Chinese New Year. Back in the Big Apple, she commemorates a Passover Seder with the owners of Russ & Daughters and food author Ruth Reichl. On the menu: smoked salmon, charoset, beef brisket and horseradish, and of course, chicken soup with matzo balls. Norton & Company, 2010 “This book was a bestseller so I’m not exactly cluing you onto some hidden treasure here, but I love this book so much. We’ve done a huge amount of reporting on the financial crisis on our show, but Michael Lewis invented such an ingenious way to tell the story of the crash it’s hard not to admire the ingenuity of it. He tells the story through several people who saw it coming. It’s a surprisingly suspenseful story, even though we all know how it’ll end. For one thing, most of these investors worried that maybe they had it wrong. Maybe the big investment houses were smarter than them. All evidence pointed to the contrary but how could the whole world be wrong, you know? The whole thing climaxes in this amazing set of scenes at a conference in Las Vegas when our main characters separately realize, ‘oh no, they were right, the whole economy is going to hell.’ What’s so amazing about this book is what an entertaining and hilarious romp it is. The main characters have everything going against them as main characters in a story: they’re rich, they’re arrogant, they’re rude beyond rude, and yet somehow Lewis is able to make you see it from their point of view and sort of love them. No mean trick. Also, if you’ve never understood what exactly happened to bring down the economy, this book explains it clearly and enjoyably, in the middle of this compelling yarn. Lewis is the greatest non-fiction writer working. A Celtic Sojourn

Berklee alum and jazz guitarist Julian Lage has been performing since he was ﬁve, and has played with such artists as Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny and David Grisman. His 2009 debut release, Sounding Point, was nominated for a Grammy. His most recent release, Gladwell, reﬂects Lage’s wide-ranging musical interests and talents, from chamber music, American folk and bluegrass to Latin, world, string-band tradition and modern jazz. Jazz in Performance

Now entering its ninth season of sold-out concerts around New England, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn is returning to a stage near you. This year’s performances will feature a wide variety of singers, musicians and dancers steeped in the Irish tradition and other inﬂuences. Cast members include Ruth Moody of The Wailin’ Jennys; Hanneke Cassel, Laura Cortese, Lissa Schneckenburger, Flynn Cohen of Halali; Seamus Egan of Solas and more! This year will feature the introduction of a new instrument—the hammer dulcimer—played by Simon Chrisman of The Bee Eaters, as well as the return of the uilleann pipes played by Kieran O’Hare.
