Whatever your holiday tradition—and there are many in this nation of immigrants—chances are you’ll be spending time gathered ’round a table sharing a special meal with family and friends. that is the simple and deliciously interesting premise of a new special co-produced by WGBH (see page 14) featuring PBs culinary expert Lidia Bastianich, who explores the American immigrant experience through the revelry of the holidays. “At the heart of this special is my own immigrant experience,” says Lidia, who came to the Us at the age of 12 after spending two years in a political refugee camp. As she crisscrosses the country to experience different holiday traditions firsthand—from a mexican-style Christmas celebration in san Antonio to a Chinese new Year’s dinner in san Francisco to a Passover seder in new York City—Lidia listens as multiple generations of Americans explain the importance of food in preserving culture. We’re also exploring cultural traditions through another lens: music. throughout the month (see pages 26–27), our Classical new england service brings you powerful performances in celebration of the holidays. Highlights include the Boston Camerata’s A Medieval Christmas; Chanukah in Story and Song; Feliz Navidad from Concierto; Christmas Around New England; Boston Baroque’s Gala First Day Concert; and new Year’s day from vienna 2012, to name a few. “We’re doing all we can to make sure you have access to the best of seasonal classical music that Boston, new england and the world have to offer,” says Classical new england managing director Ben Roe. And it’s as close as your radio, your computer, or your smartphone. visit ClassicalNewEngland.org to hear our 24/7 Holiday music Channel, where you’ll find hours of uninterrupted listening to your favorite classical music. this issue of Explore! is filled with programs to keep you and your family inspired and entertained throughout this festive time of year—made possible by your generous annual support. With gratitude and best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season,

But few know about the existence of the national Aids memorial, a seven-acre grove in san Francisco’s Golden Gate Park that has been transformed from a neglected eyesore into a sacred tribute. this documentary chronicles the garden’s evolution, showing how a community in crisis found healing and remembrance and exploring how Americans mark a time of unimaginable loss. Lidia Celebrates America
Four Holidays, Four Traditions
Join celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich, author of the new Lidia’s Italy in America cookbook, as she travels across America in a celebration of culture through food in this new WGBH co-produced special that explores the American immigrant experience through holiday traditions. The adventure begins in New York City, where Lidia prepares a traditional Italian Christmas Eve La Vigilia— feast of the seven fishes—with actor Stanley Tucci. Next stop is San Antonio, to honor the holiday Mexican-style with four generations of the Cortez family, where Christmas is about making traditional Mexican American tamales and decadent desserts. In San Francisco, Lidia makes Chinese dumplings with the Fong-Torres family to observe Chinese New Year. Back in the Big Apple, she commemorates a Passover Seder with the owners of Russ & Daughters and food author Ruth Reichl. On the menu: smoked salmon, charoset, beef brisket and horseradish, and of course, chicken soup with matzo balls. Tortured Artist
in a family of ambitious artists, Francesca Woodman burned the brightest, and burnt out the fastest. the daughter of artists George and Betty Woodman, Francesca grew up psychically and physically immersed in art, eating from plates that Betty made and surrounded by George’s paintings. she went on to become a trailblazer in fashion photography. more than 30 years after her death, Francesca’s haunting photographs (shown: “Untitled,” 1980) are seen as among the most important and distinctive of her time. the celebrated artist committed suicide at age 22, leaving her family with a complicated mix of pride in her legacy, guilt about her death and anger over the shortness of her life. Radio Spotlight Hosts’ Holiday Picks for 2011 Need a gift idea for friends and family, or an idea for a holiday event to attend? We’ve asked a cross-section of WGBH Radio personalities to suggest a few ideas. Lisa Mullins, The World It Happened on the Way to War: A Marine’s Path to Peace, Rye Barcott Book, Bloomsbury, 2011 “Rye Barcott’s fast-moving odyssey is about fighting in Iraq and simultaneously creating peace and opportunity in the Kibera slums of Kenya. The memoir is a great gift for young and old interested in seeing the true ingredients of change: heartbreak and sheer joy.” A Christmas Celtic Sojourn Boston, Worcester, New Bedford, Rockport and Portsmouth, NH Concert, December 9–18 “WGBH’s own Brian O’Donovan (host of A Celtic Sojourn), brings storytelling, dance, glorious music and much-needed sanity to the season in this annual show. It is my traditional holiday oasis.” Kara Miller, Innovation Hub Miracle on 34th Street, Film, 1947 “I always look forward to watching Miracle on 34th Street. I particularly love the part when postmen start dumping letters to Santa Claus on the judge’s desk.”

Ray Brown, Classical Music with Ray Brown Home for Christmas, Anne Sofie von Otter CD, Deutsche Grammophon, 1999 “I come back to this CD every year. I love the selection of songs: a few Englishlanguage standards, with others sung in German and French, and a handful of delightful Swedish tunes. This is wonderfully warm and accessible music.” Jared Bowen, The Emily Rooney Show/Center Stage ASM 35: The Complete Musician, Anne-Sophie Mutter CD box set, Deutsche Grammophon, 2011 “Since I’ve been discouraged from recommending two of my favorite holiday movies (the explosive Christmas Eve romp Die Hard, and the suicide hotline Christmas comedy Mixed Nuts), I have a gift suggestion: I interviewed German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter at Symphony Hall this fall. She’s brilliant, radiant and loves a post-concert burger—all reasons to give as a gift her new, limited-edition box-set, ASM 35: The Complete Musician, which spans her extraordinary 35-year career.” 22 Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/897
Laura Carlo, Classical New England host What to Listen for in Music, Aaron Copland Book, Signet, 1999 “If you’ve ever taken piano lessons or wondered what you should be listening for at a Symphony Hall concert, then this is a great book to get to know as you continue your musical explorations. Aaron Copland argues that while most of us who can hear music do enjoy it, few of us really listen to get the full meaning of what the composer intended. There are other ‘music appreciation’ books out there, but this one is by an actual composer with a message that classical music has much to give us if we will just…listen.” Messiah Sing Concert, various Boston venues The Nutcracker, through December 31 Ballet, Boston Opera House Holiday Pops, starting December 7 Concert, Boston Symphony Hall “A tradition started by my parents at Christmastime that I have passed along to my child: getting to see and hear as many Christmas musical events as possible. The activities start right after Thanksgiving and go through New Year’s. We try to take in a Messiah Sing, The Nutcracker ballet and, in more recent years, a family matinee of the Holiday Pops. What better gift can you give your children or grandchildren, or even an adult friend, than exposure to classical music? They don’t need another toy. But giving them an experience and a family memory…that’s Christmas magic to last a lifetime!” Cristina Quinn, 89.7 WGBH Radio Anchor/Reporter Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Television, 1964 It’s a Wonderful Life Film, 1946 Elf Film, 2003 “These are three movies that never fail to get me into the holiday spirit: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: Burl Ives’s voice is almost synonymous with Christmas; It’s a Wonderful Life: it doesn’t feel like the holidays without George Bailey’s existential crisis—not many movies can pull off that kind of weight during Christmas; and Elf: if it weren’t for this movie, I would never have found out how delicious maple syrup is with spaghetti. As for gift ideas: heated socks, please. Brookstone has a nice pair. All they require are three AA batteries per foot. Sexy!” Emily Rooney, The Emily Rooney Show Commonwealth Avenue Mall Lighting, December 1 The Nutcracker, through December 31 Ballet, Boston Opera House “My favorite holiday tradition has to be the lighting of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. This daunting undertaking, strictly supported by a few large donors and people in the neighborhood, gives all of downtown a special glow throughout the Christmas season and well into the gloomy months of winter. I’m also a sucker for The Nutcracker, which I take in every other year.”
Ira Glass, This American Life The Big Short, Michael Lewis Book, W.W. Norton & Company, 2010 “This book was a bestseller so I’m not exactly cluing you onto some hidden treasure here, but I love this book so much. We’ve done a huge amount of reporting on the financial crisis on our show, but Michael Lewis invented such an ingenious way to tell the story of the crash it’s hard not to admire the ingenuity of it. He tells the story through several people who saw it coming. It’s a surprisingly suspenseful story, even though we all know how it’ll end. For one thing, most of these investors worried that maybe they had it wrong. Maybe the big investment houses were smarter than them. All evidence pointed to the contrary but how could the whole world be wrong, you know? The whole thing climaxes in this amazing set of scenes at a conference in Las Vegas when our main characters separately realize, ‘oh no, they were right, the whole economy is going to hell.’ What’s so amazing about this book is what an entertaining and hilarious romp it is. The main characters have everything going against them as main characters in a story: they’re rich, they’re arrogant, they’re rude beyond rude, and yet somehow Lewis is able to make you see it from their point of view and sort of love them. No mean trick. Also, if you’ve never understood what exactly happened to bring down the economy, this book explains it clearly and enjoyably, in the middle of this compelling yarn. Lewis is the greatest non-fiction writer working. He’s out for fun, and finds vivid stories that illustrate new ways to see the world.” Sean Corcoran, WGBH/WCAI Reporter Tripping Lily, Acoustic Folk Pop Quartet CD “Last year we enjoyed a wonderful Christmas album by the Cape Cod-based pop group Tripping Lily. There are rumors of another album this year, but even if it doesn’t happen, all ages can enjoy the music of this talented quartet of musicians (which can be purchased on iTunes or at CDbaby.com). Their harmonies are second to none.” The Night Before Christmas, Clement C. Moore (writer), Tom Browning (illustrator) Book, Sterling Innovation, 2009 “Growing up on Boston’s North Shore, the one thing we did every year as a family was watch It’s a Wonderful Life together on TV. Now that I have a family of my own, we still watch the film, but we also are sure to sit together by the fire and read The Night Before Christmas.”
Callie Crossley, The Callie Crossley Show The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, Diana B. Henriques Book, Times Books, 2011 Silver Sparrow, Tayari Jones Novel, Algonquin Books, 2011 Steve Jobs, Walter Isaacson Book, Simon & Schuster, 2011 Nantucket Christmas Stroll, Nantucket, MA Event, December 2–4 “From my bookshelf: The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust by Diana B. Henriques, Tayari Jones’ fabulous new novel, Silver Sparrow and Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. Also on my list is attending the Nantucket Christmas Stroll. Never gone but hope to this year. Other ways I enjoy the season are fun classes at Boston Wine School, for the aficionado and the novice, under the witty tutelage of my wine contributor, Jonathan Alsop. And some champagne for staring into the fire: Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label, LaurentPerrier, Gosset Grande Réserve. I’m eyeing a new kitchen gadget in the latest Chefs Catalogue: one of those special gel-filled mats for your kitchen floor that keep your legs from tiring out when you are standing and cooking for a long time. Finally, I can’t say enough about L.L. Bean’s red flannel pj’s, so perfect for my new holiday tradition: extreme relaxation. I loll about in front of the fireplace, eggnog or champagne in hand, while alternating between reading and napping. Now that’s Christmas cheer!” Brian O’Donovan, A Celtic Sojourn A Long, Long Way, Sebastian Barry Novel, Penguin, 2005 On Canaan’s Side, Sebastian Barry Novel, Viking Adult, 2011 “Sebastian Barry is an Irish writer whose work has received a lot of attention of late. Two of his novels are among my favorites of recent years. The backdrop is Ireland of the WWI/Nationalist Revolutionary 1916–18, and subsequently here in the US, with an intriguing and seldom-writtenabout aspect of 20th-century Irish immigration. The two books can be read independently, but are connected.” The Christmas Revels, December 16–29 Performance, Sanders Theatre, Harvard University “What is Christmas in New England without a trip to the Revels? Our favorite family holiday tradition is always at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge. The late Jack Langstaff was a personal inspiration for me in leading a life dedicated to music and the rituals of seasonal singing.” Mindy Todd, The Point Saving Santa’s Seals, T.M. Murphy Book, Leapfrog Press, 2009 “My nieces and nephews love this book, which is about an eight-year-old’s Christmas adventure. It’s especially great for anyone who has visited Woods Hole and the aquarium where Bumper and Lucille live. It’s great fun.” Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/897 23

Brian McCreath, The Bach Hour with Brian McCreath Gustav Mahler, Jens Malte Fischer Book, Yale University Press, 2011 “Mahler’s symphonies hold a special resonance for our time, with a combination of an all-encompassing, large-canvas scope and the most personal and intimate of expressions. The composer’s life itself was fascinating, and Jens Malte Fischer has illuminated that story in this clear-eyed but compelling new biography.”
