On January 19, we’re carving out a new place for all things science on WGBH. Beginning that night, our stellar science series Nova moves to Wednesdays at 9pm to anchor “Nova Wednesdays” (see page 15), introduced by a new season of Nova ScienceNow with astrophysicist and host Neil deGrasse Tyson at 8pm. We’re celebrating Nova’s move to Wednesdays with the premiere of its much-anticipated four-part special, Making Stuff with David Pogue, technology reporter for The New York Times and science buff extraordinaire. “When the idea arose of doing a miniseries on material science, my first thought was, ‘Who would watch it?’” confides WGBH’s Paula Apsell, Nova senior executive producer. “But I quickly came to see it’s the most crucial science in terms of human progress. From the Stone Age to the Iron Age, to more recent periods dominated by plastics and silicon, materials are the basis of our civilization and are what will take us into the future. And I can’t think of a better, more tech-savvy and entertaining guide than David Pogue.” The feeling is mutual. “Working with Nova has been a big honor for me,” David says. “There’s an emphasis on quality. Through the entire process, the idea always was: What is the best science to show? And what is the best way to show it?” The series is just the beginning of an extended exploration into the world of “stuff.” Nova is partnering with organizations across the country, including Boston’s Museum of Science (see below), to give you and your family the chance to experience firsthand how scientists and engineers are making materials that are stronger, smaller, cleaner and smarter. And that exploration continues on Nova’s new website (pbs.org/nova), which we recently redesigned and expanded to be your go-to destination for the best of science on the Web. Promoting an understanding of science and inspiring the next generation of scientists is part of WGBH’s DNA. Our children’s series and websites introduce kids to math, science and engineering through entertaining, curriculum-based children’s content. And we’re giving everyone, including our nation’s teachers and students, access to the important science stories of our times through Nova and its spin-off, Nova ScienceNow—on television, on radio (89.7 WGBH’s Nova Science Minutes) and on the Web (including a special Nova Teachers section). Thanks to your membership support, WGBH can serve up the best of science every week!

Hero of the Confederacy
He is celebrated by handsome equestrian statues in countless cities and towns across the American South and by no less than five postage stamps issued by the government he fought against during the four bloodiest years in American history. Nearly a century and a half after his death, Robert E. Lee, the leading Confederate general of the American Civil War, remains a source of fascination and, for some, veneration. This film examines the life and reputation of the general, whose military successes made him the scourge of the Union and the hero of the Confederacy. American Experience/Robert E. Haiti’s Catastrophic Earthquake
A dvertisement
Nova/The Deadliest Earthquake Tue, 1/11 at 8pm on WGBH 2 In 2010, epic earthquakes all over the planet delivered one of the worst annual death tolls ever recorded. The deadliest strike was in Haiti, where a quake just southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince, killed more than 200,000, reducing homes, hospitals, schools and the presidential palace to rubble. In exclusive coverage, a Nova camera crew follows a team of US geologists as they first enter Haiti in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. It is a race against time as they hunt for crucial evidence that will help determine exactly what happened deep underground and what the risks are of a new killer quake in hotspots around the world and in the US. Frontline/Battle for Haiti Tue, 1/11 at 9pm on WGBH 2 In the chaos of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, thousands of the country’s worst criminals seized the opportunity to stage a mass escape from the National Penitentiary. One year later, the gang leaders are re-asserting control in the capital, threatening the country’s stability. With unique access to the police units trying to hunt down the gangsters—and revealing encounters with the gangsters themselves—Frontline examines the uphill fight to rebuild Haiti in the face of deep-rooted corruption and intimidation. Independent Lens/Children of Haiti Tue, 1/11 at 10pm on WGBH 2 In the midst of Haiti’s lush mountains and historical relics is an epidemic of more than 500,000 orphan children who wander the streets day and night. Known as the “soulless” and forgotten by their own people, they do what they must to survive each day. Children of Haiti follows three teenage boys—Denick, a prolific and charming 17-year-old; Nickenson, a tough but sensitive 16-year-old; and Antoine, an energetic paint-thinner abuser—who reflect on their country and their lives, while sharing a common dream of education, government assistance and social acceptance.

Called “the most natural and least selfconscious screen actor that has ever lived” by critic Pauline Kael, Jeff Bridges has been plying his craft most of his life. With a first role as an infant in his mother Dorothy’s arms and a childhood debut in his father Lloyd’s television series Sea Hunt, he burst onto the silver screen in The Last Picture Show in 1971 and was immediately recognized with a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Bridges has created original and memorable characters in notable films ever since. He also helped found the End Hunger Network in 1983 and continues to work tirelessly to reach their goals. In the summer of 1868, paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh found the greatest dinosaur burial ground of all time. Marsh wrestled over the discovery with the other leading paleontologist of his generation, Edward Drinker Cope. The two rivals uncovered the remains of dozens of prehistoric animals, including 130 species of dinosaur, but their professional rivalry eventually spiraled out of control, leaving both men alone and almost penniless. Birds of Paradise
Living in the depths of the New Guinean rainforest are birds of unimaginable color and beauty. When Europeans first saw the plumes of these fabulous creatures in the 16th century, they believed they must be from heaven and called them “birds of paradise.” The people of New Guinea say the birds possess supernatural powers and magic. But to find these birds in New Guinea is one of the toughest assignments and to witness their extraordinary mating displays is even tougher. David Attenborough introduces a young team of New Guinean scientists on a grueling expedition to find and film these birds, the Holy Grail of wildlife filmmakers. Shipwrecks and Starvation
In 1881, 25 men led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely sailed from the harbor of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Their destination was Lady Franklin Bay in the high Arctic, where they planned to collect a wealth of scientific data. Three years later, only six survivors returned, with a daunting story of shipwreck, starvation, mutiny and cannibalism. Drawing on an archival record that includes scientific accounts, diaries, photographs and letters, the film reveals the nearly unbearable pressures experienced by the members of the expedition. Radio Spotlight WCAI Blogs about Climate Change In August 2010, NPR launched 12 new blogs with member stations to strengthen the role public media plays in local journalism. Each site covers a focused niche topic, chosen because it is vitally important locally and resonates on a national stage. MindShift (KQED) is a blog on the intersection between technology and education, Home Post (KPBS) covers military life, and Climatide (WCAI, WGBH’s sister station on Cape Cod) tackles the issue of climate change. WCAI Science Editor Heather Goldstone, who holds a PhD in marine biology from MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, took on the role of blogging about climate change. Because Cape Cod draws its lifeblood both culturally and economically from its waters and coastlines, this area is already feeling the effects of increasing temperatures. WGBH’s Jen Goebel caught up with Goldstone to talk about blogging, climate change and what’s changing on the Cape.
Q A
How did you get involved with WCAI?
I was finishing up my PhD dissertation and realized I was not really interested in pursuing a career in research. The things I liked most about being a scientist involved communicating science to other people—speaking publicly and writing about my work. For me, public radio was an obvious choice because my father was a general manager for a public radio station, and I grew up on NPR. My lab was literally a block away from WCAI, so one day I walked in and asked if they would like a science reporter. And they said yes.
Q A
What is it like going from science to radio to blogging? There was a big learning curve! A PhD disser tation and radio reporting are probably as far apart as they can be on the spectrum of writing. Writing a thesis is extremely technical, because you are including every detail of every experiment you did, justifying all the work you’ve done over the years. In radio, you have three to five minutes for a feature, or less than a minute if you’re doing a news piece. My time as a radio reporter has been invaluable in transitioning to a blogging style of writing, which is much more conversational than other print media, but still is very succinct and to the point.
Q A
Why did you choose climate change as the topic for your blog? As a journalist with a broad perspective on science, it became increasingly clear to me that it’s impossible to separate any issue from climate change. It’s such an over-arching issue. As part of the Fresh Water/Salt Water series we did, I had worked on two stories on the impacts of climate change on fisheries and life on the Cape, and those were in our minds when we submitted our proposal for the blog. NPR liked the idea, and the rest is history.
Q A
What do you think of blogging as a medium for news and information? Keeping up with the fire hose of information is probably the biggest challenge for me— and for everyone. There’s so much information on the Internet. The blog is meant to be a trusted resource for people to find the most important content on climate change. Blogs can be very responsive in ways that other news media are not. People comment, pose questions and drive the coverage to meet their needs. Our audience is small but growing, and we’re starting to see people really engage in conversations.
Q A
Many Americans don’t believe that climate change is real. Why do you think that is? In large part, this is a failing of scientists and the media to adequately explain the science. The scientific community thinks about uncertainty differently, and debating results and acknowledging that uncertainty is an integral part of science. That has caused confusion because people outside the scientific community see a lot of uncertainty and a lot of disagreement, but the fact is that the vast majority of the scientific community agrees that climate change is happening and that human activities play a large role in that. This failure of communication is something that the scientific community is working on, and part of that is happening online and through blogs like ours.
Q A
How has global warming affected Cape Cod? Sea level has risen almost 11 inches in the past century, and that has changed the coastlines. The insurance industry is very concerned about sea-level rise and about predictions of more severe storms due to warmer oceans, and home-
owners can see those changes on their bills for flood and homeowner’s insurance. Harder to see, but still important, are the increases in water temperatures around Cape Cod and throughout the Gulf of Maine. Water temperatures have risen between 2 and 4 degrees in the past 60 years, and as a result, we’re seeing commercial fish and shellfish moving north to try to stay in the cold waters where they are most comfortable. In 2010, for the first time, we saw a recommendation from the National Marine Fisheries Service to close an area to lobster fishing south of Cape Cod based exclusively on climate change. The area wasn’t closed due to pushback from the industry, but it’s likely most of these lobsters will move to colder waters in the near future. Another concern we have is that the iconic cod, after which our Cape is named, also are moving north. Predictions are that Georges Bank may soon be too warm for cod to survive.
Q A
What do you hope Climatide can do?
Changes like those facing lobster and cod are hard to see because we’re not looking at the fish every day, but these changes are being felt economically, and I think that one of the goals of Climatide is to make these impacts that are already happening more visible. Visit the Climatide blog at climatide.wgbh.org or follow it on Facebook and Twitter.

By Brian McCreath Host of Classical Music with Brian McCreath, weekdays 1pm–4pm Connection. It’s the job of any media, whether it’s a book, a film, a painting, or, yes, a radio station, to connect an audience to an idea, a perspective, a state of mind. And for us at 99.5 All Classical, the task of creating that connection seems at once simple and daunting: Simple because classical music is a beautiful art, often irresistible in sheer sonic terms. Daunting because that beauty is just a thin, seductive surface layer, hiding what’s beneath—the gift-wrap, if you will. The gift itself is a combination of the context that surrounded the music’s creation and the music itself as a response to that context. To put it another way, it’s the world of the composer and the composer’s answer to that world, which we then apply to our own world. Now that the busy-ness of the holiday season has wound down and we’re all staring into 2011, perhaps a bit bleary-eyed, I’d like to offer two ways to deepen your connection with music. The first is a recent publication by The New Yorker’s music critic Alex Ross called Listen to This. In this collection of essays, Ross approaches music as a living art: “The mistake that apostles of the classical have always made is to have joined their love of the past to a dislike of the present. The music has other ideas: it hates the past and wants to escape.” The other resource I recommend is one of our own: the new and improved 995allclassical.org. Our website offers you more than ever before, with programs and features available on demand and for download, as well as our popular live stream. Take a look at our new Host Notes, where my colleagues and I share personal insights, connections and tidbits about the music. Visit when you can, and let us know what you think at wgbh.org/995.

Art and Music
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has opened its spectacular new Art of the Americas Wing, and throughout the month host Cathy Fuller pairs American paintings with American music of the same year. For example: Mary Stevenson Cassat’s In the Loge, painted in 1878, with George Whitefield Chadwick’s String Quartet No. 1, also composed in 1878, and Edward Hopper’s Room in Brooklyn, painted in 1932, with Amy Beach’s Chamber Opera Cabildo Op. 149, also composed in 1932. Continuing with the “art and music” theme, Fuller also features WGBH-recorded performances at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Weekdays, 9am–1pm Classical Music with Cathy Fuller
Charles Martin Loeffler
Host Cathy Fuller marks the 150th anniversary of the birth (1/30/1861) of Charles Martin Loeffler, a violinist and composer with deep ties to Boston. Born in Schöneberg, Germany, he decided at the age of 13 to become a professional violinist. In 1881, he came to the US, and joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as assistant concertmaster in 1882, a post he held for 21 years. Loeffler was a favorite soloist of the Boston concert-going public and performed premieres of works by Max Bruch, Camille Saint-Saëns and Edouard Lalo. The BSO premiered his first orchestral work, Les veillées de l’Ukraine, in 1891. After retiring to focus on composition, Loeffler settled in Medfield, MA where he divided his time among music, Listen online at 995allclassical.org, on 96.3 Back Bay/Beacon Hill, on your Internet radio, on your HD radio at 89.7 HD2 or on 89.5 WNCK Nantucket

The Continuum of Symphonic Tradition
When an orchestra performs a major American symphonic work, the rest of the program frequently falls into one of two categories: either it’s part of an “all-American” program, or it’s sandwiched between sure-fire popular classical works that will salvage the concert’s marketability. A notable exception is being made this season at the BSO, where James Levine is programming all of John Harbison’s symphonies and pairing them with masterpieces by composers such as Mahler and Schumann, making it possible to appreciate Harbison’s work as part of the continuum of symphonic tradition. It is in that spirit that host James David Jacobs pairs an American symphony with a corresponding work from one of the great old masters. Sundays at 10am 1/2: 1/9: 1/16: 1/23: 1/30:
