Where to Tune In

Creating a place where independent voices can be heard—and important, complex issues discussed—lies at the heart of WGBH’s public media mission. This month, nearly five years after Hurricane Katrina leveled much of New Orleans, Tavis Smiley brings us his unique perspective on the city’s recovery, and some of the ordinary, extraordinary men and women who still are riding out the storm. (See page 16.) “We see two sides of the city,” Tavis tells us. “The tourist areas that have been redeveloped with federal funds, and the devastated neighborhoods, where everyday people have taken it upon themselves to get their homes rebuilt, their schools reopened, and their lives back.” Closer to home, 89.7 WGBH investigative journalist Phillip Martin delivers a multi-part report entitled “30 Years of Daysat-Sea: The Untold Story of How the Government Nearly Destroyed the Fishing Industry in Order to Save It.” (See page 22.) A former Neiman Fellow at Harvard and longtime correspondent for WGBH’s international radio news series The World, Martin looks at the unintended consequences of a federal regulatory system that has decimated New England’s commercial fishing industry and the fish stocks its policies were designed to protect. “I love the idea of working on local issues,” Phillip says. “Before you can know the world, you really have to know what’s right in front of you.” Tavis and Phillip don’t simply ask the important questions…they ask the important follow-up questions, a trait that distinguishes public media’s finest journalists, including the inimitable Bill Moyers, who at 76 recently wrapped up Bill Moyers’ Journal and left weekly television. “The most important thing to journalists,” Bill told his millions of viewers, “is the independence that enables us to do our job without fear or favor.” From our expanded 89.7 WGBH news service to an expanded yearround schedule of Frontline investigative reports coming your way this fall, WGBH is working harder than ever to bring you the high-quality, independent journalism—across both traditional and new media platforms—that you and the American public expect and deserve. Treasure Chest of Memories In this delightful memoir, award-winning French filmmaker Agnès Varda employs all the magic of cinema to juxtapose the real and the imagined, the past and the present, pain and joy. Peanuts and Crackerjack The sixth “inning” of Ken Burns’s landmark 1994 film Baseball leads off with the baseball season of 1941, one of the most exciting of all time. Then the War intervenes and baseball’s best players become soldiers. On their return, the game—and the entire country—are changed forever: MLB executive Branch Rickey integrates baseball on April 15, 1947, when Jackie Robinson takes the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. This Land Is My Land Though apartheid ended in South Africa in 1994, economic injustices between blacks and whites remain unresolved. Big Apple Baseball In the seventh “inning” of Ken Burns’s landmark 1994 film Baseball, rare newsreel film and interviews celebrate the glorious heyday of New York City baseball with some of its most memorable moments: Casey Stengel rebuilds the Yankee dynasty with switch-hitting slugger Mickey Mantle and the imperturbable talents of Yogi Berra; the “shot heard round the world,” Bobby Thomson’s home run off Ralph Branca in 1951; and Don Larsen’s perfect game. Dreams of Her Father

Past and present collide as awardwinning ﬁlmmaker Natalia Almada brings to life audio recordings she inherited from her grandmother, daughter of Plutarco Elias Calles, a revolutionary general who became Mexico’s president in 1924. In his time, Calles was called El Jefe Maximo (Foremost Chief). Today, he is remembered as El Quema-Curas (Priest Burner) and a dictator who ruled through puppet presidents until his exile in 1936. Airing during the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, El General moves between a daughter’s memories as she grappled with history’s portrayal of her father and the weight of his legacy on Mexico today. Imagine being picked up off the street, told you have committed a murder you know nothing about and then ﬁnding yourself sentenced to 20 years in jail. In December 2005, this happened to Antonio Zúñiga in Mexico City and, like thousands of other innocent people, he was wrongfully imprisoned. Presumed Guilty is the award-winning story of two young lawyers and their struggle to free Zúñiga. 30 Years of Days-at-Sea: The Untold Story of How the Government Nearly Destroyed the Fishing Industry in Order to Save It

In the 1970s, the federal government, faced with unprecedented low stocks of common food fish, began to restrict commercial fishing off the nation’s coasts in an attempt to save and replenish these fish stocks. One of the regulatory schemes became known as the “days-at-sea” program. Fishermen were restricted in how many days in a calendar year they were allowed to fish. Thirty years later, the “days-at-sea” program must be called what it was: an unmitigated disaster. Through a series of 10 stories, WGBH’s senior investigative reporter Phillip Martin presents a sound-rich radio narrative of the effects of this misguided regulatory scheme on both fish and fishermen and takes a hard-eyed, in-depth look at the reasons why the policy was put in place and why it failed. The Magic of Tanglewood By Brian Bell, WGBH radio producer It really is a magical place. I can’t easily describe what makes Tanglewood unique, but it is. For many people, Tanglewood is a place to relax, to be out of the city, and to enjoy world-class music in a beautiful setting. For some of us, however, Tanglewood is eight weeks of intense work—although “work” really isn’t the right word. Nevertheless, once the summer is over, everyone involved is really exhausted. From a musician’s perspective, the difference is dramatic. During the winter, the Boston Symphony Orchestra plays one concert program several times a week for a Symphony Hall audience of 2,600 people. At Tanglewood, the Koussevitzky Shed alone seats 6,000, with many more on the lawn. And lots of people come for the whole weekend and attend several concerts, so playing the same program as the previous night is out of the question—which means the players have three times as much music to prepare and rehearse! No wonder they’re busy! Add to this the Tanglewood Music Center and Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, with young musicians from all over the world learning, listening and playing. With all this activity, it’s not surprising that some of the world’s greatest musicians come to Tanglewood to take part in concerts and master classes, and to work with the many brilliant students. Everyone seems to be in some sort of musical high gear. And that energy seems to feed the multitudes that come to experience the fruits of all the musical activity. Where else would 15,000 people show up on any given Sunday afternoon for a concert of nothing but Mozart? Or Beethoven? Or Stravinsky? The size of the crowds tells me that great music will be here long after I’ve departed. And that’s just the music. Every summer, Berkshire County attracts an amazing array of talented artists, dancers, actors and other performers. But for me, Tanglewood remains the focal point. Not without reason did conductor Serge Koussevitzky, who led the Boston Symphony Orchestra to Tanglewood in 1936, request that he be interred in the southeast corner of a Lenox church burial ground—not to be away from the other gravestones, but to be as close as possible to Tanglewood.

Talking Tanglewood with Ron Della Chiesa This year, radio host Ron Della Chiesa celebrates 19 years as the voice of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at WGBH. Della Chiesa hosts live performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcast from Symphony Hall and Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home, as well as live Boston Pops concerts. For the ﬁrst time, WGBH’s 99.5 All Classical service will be bringing you all three weekend live performances from Tanglewood’s Koussevitsky Music Shed—Friday evenings, Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons throughout the entire Tanglewood summer season. Della Chiesa spoke about broadcasting from Tanglewood with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel.

How did you get started in radio?

I grew up in the golden age of radio. I used to listen to classical music on the radio: Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony, The Voice of Firestone that featured a lot of opera singers, The Bell Telephone Hour. My father took me to my ﬁrst concert in Symphony Hall, where I heard the BSO conducted by Charles Munch. I always loved classical music. I think when I turned to radio, I was expressing my love for the music in a way that I couldn’t as a musician—I played trumpet, but I didn’t play well at all.

How did you become the voice of the BSO? William Pierce was the very ﬁrst WGBH radio host for the live broadcasts from Symphony Hall. He started in the early ’50s, and was with WGBH for many years. Then, when he stepped down, I took over. I had joined WGBH in 1966 as a television news announcer, and moved to radio in 1969. Some of the highlights of my career have been interviewing the greats—Aaron Copland, Howard Hanson, André Previn, Pavarotti. So many great artists visit WGBH. stage entrance from my window, since the artists come in from the right side of the stage. I have a television monitor with three different views: the overall view of the orchestra, a view of the conductor, and a view of the stage door. I can switch views to see what’s happening at any point.

How do you do a live show?

We start half an hour before the performance with a “pre-game” show featuring the artists and analysis of the pieces. For the last 19 years, Brian Bell has been WGBH’s producer, Jim Donahue has been our radio engineer, and I have been the announcer. We are a very wellpracticed team. When we’re doing the show, I describe what’s happening onstage; I introduce the artists, the soloists, the conductor, and describe some of the color. I’m like the baseball announcers who do the play-by-play of a baseball game. There are always some surprises. Sometimes, if the conductor is delayed in coming out or if there’s a traffic jam at Tanglewood on a Sunday afternoon, I’ve had to fill an extra 10–15 minutes. I might talk about what’s coming up later in the season, or the history of Tanglewood, or talk about some of the now-famous classical musicians who came to Tanglewood when they were younger. Being prepared to fill in is part of any live event.

Q A

Where are you actually sitting when you’re broadcasting from Tanglewood? If you’re facing the Tanglewood stage from the audience, there’s a triangular window down to the left of the stage. I can see out, but it’s one-way glass, so no one can see in. That’s the broadcast booth. Brian and Jim are in the other room behind me, sealed off by a soundproof door, so my contact with Brian is through the headset. He tells me when to cut, when to get ready to go and who’s coming out on stage. I also can see the

Where are the microphones?

Jim Donahue places microphones all over the stage and there are even some hanging from the rafters. During the rehearsal, he does the mic check—they follow the score in the control room, so Jim knows exactly where different instruments are going to come in and where instruments are going to take a solo. One of the problems they’ve had in the Shed is that the birds can get very noisy. Once I actually said, “We had an additional chorus of birds joining in, they sound very happy today.” But everyone took it in stride because it’s Tanglewood.

Are you looking forward to doing even more broadcasts from Tanglewood this summer? I am. This year we are doing more concerts than we’ve ever done in our 19 years. We’re doing Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. I don’t really consider it work. I almost feel like part of the orchestra. We really try to reﬂect the spirit of Tanglewood in the broadcast. Part of what we do is bring the excitement of the live performance to people’s homes—when there are ovations for a soloist like Yo-Yo Ma, sometimes two or three or even four, we ﬁnd ways of bringing that excitement to our listeners.

How do you like being on the new 99.5 All Classical station? I think it’s great. I’m hearing that people really like what we’re doing, particularly since we’ve increased the live broadcasts from Tanglewood, the BSO and the Pops. We’re a single format, we’re easy to ﬁnd, and the variety of music we’re playing has really broadened. There’s so little live symphonic music on air, it’s wonderful to be able to do so much of it.
