Summer music festivals are a New England tradition. In fact, the per capita number of classical music fests is greater here than anywhere else in the country. So when 99.5 All Classical’s managing director Ben Roe arrived at WGBH a few months ago, he knew he wanted 99.5 to provide more stages for this great summer tradition—on air, online and in our communities. “What’s great about summer music festivals is that you get this kinetic combination of artists who don’t normally play together,” says Ben, a Grammy and Peabody Award-winning producer who previously led NPR’s music division and has an extensive background in classical music. “The results are often magical.” 99.5 All Classical, Boston’s only 24/7 classical music service, is kicking off July with musical fireworks, with the broadcast of the Fourth of July concert from the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade, co-hosted by Laura Carlo and Ron Della Chiesa. Then 99.5 will hit the road, with broadcasts from Boston, as well as visits to the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, the Yellow Barn Festival in Putney, Vermont, the Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine, and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut (see page 27). “We’ll also be going to the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, one of the true ‘granddaddies’ of summer festivals, as it marks its 60th season,” says Ben. Even as we widen the tent, we’re bringing you more of what you love closer to home, from the Rockport Chamber Music Festival at Rockport’s fabulous Shalin Liu Performance Center, to all three Tanglewood concerts every weekend throughout the summer (see page 27), but with a difference. “We’re adding more content to our Tanglewood broadcasts,” Ben says. “Look for an hour-and-a-half more every weekend of ‘pre-game’ features, with the interviews and stories behind the music you won’t find anywhere else.” We’re also bringing the experience of live classical music directly into our community, as the media sponsor of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra’s citywide concerts (Landmarks’ Festivals at the Hatch Shell, neighborhood concerts and concerts for children)—introduced each week by 99.5’s talented hosts. This is a summertime gift that 99.5 and the Landmarks Orchestra are proud to make to our community. And to make sure you have access to great summer festival music when and where you choose, we’ve introduced the Boston Early Music and BSO-Tanglewood online streams, two of four new streaming services on 995allclassical.org. All this, plus our new, year-round New England Summer Festivals program every Saturday night, as part of 99.5’s revamped weekend lineup. “We want to be both a mirror and a spotlight for our region’s New in July: classical music riches,” Ben says. WGBH 44 in HD “And that means bringing you more On July 1, over-the-air viewers summer festivals than ever before.” and Comcast subscribers with Happy listening! HD TVs and HD cable boxes will be able to receive WGBH 44 in HD! See Where to Tune In at right. Jon Abbott

In 1974, famed primatologist Dian Fossey introduced a young researcher named Kelly Stewart to a gorilla family. Stewart, daughter of actor James Stewart, was the first to see a tiny new baby gorilla. She named him Titus, and her journal entry began the up-close observation of his life that researchers have continued to this day. Nature retraces the life of Titus, silverback leader, from birth to present reign, spanning a tumultuous period in the history of a species and a nation. Nature/The Gorilla King Wed, 7/6 at 8pm on WGBH 2 The great apes—chimps, orangutans, gorillas and bonobos—seem to have rich emotional lives similar to our own. But just how smart are these animals? A new generation of investigators is revealing the secret mental lives of great apes. But just as clever experiments are exposing the extraordinary abilities of great apes, new research is redefining the mental talents of our own species. Scientists are beginning to understand what separates us from our closest living relatives. Kings of England
At first it was lust, then love on the king’s part, “his so great folly” recorded in the 17 letters he wrote to her in 1527 and 1528. But when Anne Boleyn refused to become his mistress, Henry conceived the idea of marrying her. That required a Papal annulment of his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. This ought not to have posed a problem for a king, but Henry faced a futile six-year struggle to get what he wanted from Pope Clement VII. During this time, Henry began to re-think the nature of the English monarchy: he came to believe that the king, not the Pope, should rule the Church in England. Henry: Mind of a Tyrant Thu, 7/7 at 9pm on WGBH 2 Born the second child and first son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1841, Prince Albert Edward of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha always was destined to be king. It was just a very long time coming. By the time he succeeded his mother to the British throne in 1901, King Edward VII was almost 60. This film reveals the contradictory personality and extraordinary private life of the man known as “Bertie” to his family, showing how he combined the endless pursuit of pleasure with an instinctive grasp of the monarchy’s role in the 20th century. Mind Games
Psychological profiles of criminals and foreign adversaries are a regular part of modern law enforcement and intelligence-gathering. At the height of World War II, however, creating a profile of the enemy— detailing as much as possible about his childhood, current state of mind and potential actions—was a groundbreaking idea. This program recounts the work of Harvard psychoanalyst Dr. Walter Langer, who compiled the first-ever analysis of Adolf Hitler’s mental and emotional state, using a Freudian model of investigation. Library on Hooves
Biblioburro is the story of a librarian—and a library— like no other. A decade ago, Colombian teacher Luis Soriano was inspired to spend his weekends bringing a modest collection of precious books on the backs of two hard-working donkeys to the children of a poor and violence-ridden province. As Soriano braves armed bands, drug traffickers, snakes and heat, his library on hooves carries an inspirational message about education and a better future for Colombia. His efforts have attracted worldwide attention—and imitators— but his story has never been better told than in this film.

Digging Dinosaurs
Meet the monitor lizard. Armed with sharp teeth, tearing claws and a whip-like tail, this fearsome creature is not only powerful, but smart. Top predators with intelligence, monitor lizards learn as they hunt, and use their brain to track down prey, no matter what. With their acute intelligence, monitors—including the largest of all, the Komodo dragon—are a very different kind of reptile. Nova/Lizard Kings Wed, 7/27 at 8pm on WGBH 2 How is it that dinosaurs managed to survive and even thrive in the gloom of the dark and frigid polar regions? This is one of today’s most intriguing enigmas in paleontology. A unique field expedition ventures to Alaska’s North Slope to defrost a jackpot of new fossil clues. The team of researchers combines extreme engineering and perilous fossil hunting, including digging a tunnel into the permafrost to collect the dinosaur bones. With Alaska’s spectacular wilderness as a backdrop, step into a prehistoric lost world. Nova/Arctic Dinosaurs Wed, 7/27 at 9pm on WGBH 2 In the summer of 1868, paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh boarded a train for a sightseeing excursion and realized he was traveling through the greatest dinosaur burial ground of all time. Ruthless, jealous and insanely competitive, Marsh would wrestle over the discovery with the other leading paleontologist of his generation, Edward Drinker Cope. Their professional rivalry eventually spiraled out of control, and ultimately left both men alone and almost penniless. American Experience/Dinosaur Wars Wed, 7/27 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Radio Spotlight WCAI’s Sean Corcoran: Sharing Stories Since 2005, WCAI investigative reporter Sean Corcoran has tackled everything from the issue of hidden poverty on Cape Cod to the prominent and divisive matter of wind turbines. His numerous honors include a recent 2010 AP Award, multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards and a prestigious duPont-Columbia Award. But he says the most memorable part of his job is sitting in someone’s kitchen, listening to them tell their story and being trusted by them to share it with the public. He takes pride in bringing to light stories that would otherwise remain untold. Corcoran recently spoke with WGBH’s Lori Gwyr about what his job is like and why he thinks WCAI is such a valuable public-media resource for communities on the Cape, Islands and South Coast, and for online listeners everywhere.
Q A
Why did you decide to go into radio journalism? I was a newspaper reporter for about 10 years, throughout New England. One day, I was covering The Station nightclub fire [the devastating 2003 blaze that killed 100 people in West Warwick, RI] and I’d gone out to interview a survivor, using my little handheld recorder. When I got back to the paper to write up the story, I was listening to the tape and it was just emotionally very affecting. I wanted to play the tape directly for my audience, and I couldn’t do that. I think, in that moment, I made the decision: I’m going to jump over to NPR-style radio somehow.
Q
You recently did a series on what it’s like to live near the Falmouth wind turbines. What sort of reactions did that series get? I think what’s been going on in Falmouth was really a surprise to people. People had the idea that wind turbines are completely silent and there are no issues surrounding them. But dozens of people living near the turbines in Falmouth say they are experiencing health problems. Some people didn’t want to hear that side of the issue, because it’s ugly, and it doesn’t fit with what we want from renewable energy. But it’s important to hear those voices, and consider what those people have to say—the regular folks who don’t appear to have any agenda other than to sleep at night.
A
Q A
What gap do you see WCAI filling on the Cape, Islands and South Coast? Before WCAI, people would sometimes have to drive their car around to different areas to get a good public radio signal from Boston. So there was a real struggle for NPR fans here, with the lack of a public station. Some people view the Cape and Islands as just “vacationland,” but they are real communities with real problems. I’m committed to doing stories that affect people, whether that’s poverty, groundwater pollution, education, access to health care. I think that speaks to our mission at WGBH and at WCAI, to uncover those stories in this region that otherwise don’t get much attention.
Q A
How has the Web allowed you to further connect with listeners? My Cape Wind blog allows me to get more in-depth for people who have more than just a casual interest. I keep track of the media around the project, and offshore wind in general, so people have someplace to go where they’re not going to get a one-sided story. Also, it’s easy for folks to contact me via the Web, and my stories live there forever, which is fantastic. (Listen to Sean’s stories and read his Cape Wind blog at capeandislands.org.)
Q A
What’s the most fun story you’ve covered for WCAI? We have these things called Sonics—little 30- to 60-second vignettes that air throughout the day on WCAI. For one of those, I interviewed Jerry Nelson, who was one of Jim Henson’s first hires on The Muppets. He is The Count on Sesame Street. At the end of our interview he said to me, ‘So, I hear you play music. I’ve got a guitar—let’s go play some music in my kitchen.’ So, I sat in The Count’s kitchen and played folk songs. That was a real thrill for me.
Q A
How about the most unusual story?
What are some of your favorite on-the-job moments? Some of the most memorable moments are when you’re sitting in someone’s kitchen and they’re telling you their story and trusting you to do right by them. With every person I interview, I think about that: This person is really putting a lot of trust in me to convey this accurately and with the right touch.
Like most people here on the Cape, I have a septic system, and a lot of people don’t know anything about how they work. My editor asked me to get my septic system pumped and do a first-person piece about it. So, I taped all the noises of a septic system pump-out and tried to give some information about why septic systems are what they are and the problems they create. I think my neighbors were pretty surprised when they saw me holding my microphone up over the big hole in my yard!
Q A
Q A
Q A
Can you think of any stories that were particularly satisfying? I did a story about a radio service for blind listeners on the Cape and Islands that was going to shut down. Hundreds of blind people in this region were no longer going to have someone reading them newspapers or books, because the service’s budget was short $20,000. So, I did this story and I got a call two days after it aired that someone had heard the story and donated $20,000. That was so rewarding to me, because I had gone and talked to these people and I knew how important this service was to them, keeping them connected.
Why do you choose to work in public radio? I want my audience to be able to hear the voices and the emotions of the people I’m talking to. I think that is an incredibly powerful form of journalism. It means a lot to me to be associated with WGBH. I grew up on the North Shore of Boston, watching WGBH. My father participated in the televised fundraisers when I was a kid, so it is a real thrill for me to be associated with WGBH. Hosts’ Summer Picks Festivals, Books and More
Summer is a great time to travel, enjoy the outdoors or just kick back with a good book. We’ve asked a cross-section of WGBH Radio personalities for their suggestions of what to do and read this summer.
Jared Bowen Arts & Culture contributor on 89.7 WGBH; reporter, Greater Boston Porgy and Bess Loeb Drama Center, American Repertory Theater, Cambridge, MA Wed, 8/17–Mon, 10/3 “Diane Paulus and the A.R.T. have scored a major coup in landing the rights from the Gershwin estate to stage the iconic piece Porgy and Bess. It’s a little known fact that Porgy and Bess premiered here in Boston at the Colonial Theatre. With the ever-inventive Paulus directing and Broadway icon Audra McDonald starring, Porgy and Bess should be the summer’s sublime show.” Learn more at americanrepertorytheater.org. Life by Keith Richards Little, Brown and Co., May 2011 “I’ve been dying to sink my teeth into the drug-addled, rollicking and surreal world of Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards, courtesy of his recently released memoir. I’ll never strut the stadium stage so Richards can help me fantasize. Without the heroin.” Laura Carlo Host, Classical Music with Laura Carlo, 99.5 All Classical Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular Mon, 7/4 Boston Esplanade “A Boston native, I remember heading out to the Esplanade with my friends when Arthur Fiedler conducted that amazing concert in 1976, the bicentennial year. We were just kids but we knew that an amazing Boston tradition was being launched and we were thrilled that we got to be part of it. I love broadcasting from the scene even though my voice has to compete with flyovers, Howitzers and fireworks!” All the details at bostonpops.org. Newport Music Festival, Thu, 7/7–Sun, 7/24 Newport, RI “Less than a tank of gas away is the Newport Music Festival. Make a full day of it by flying kites at Adams State Park, having lunch overlooking the ocean, and then heading over to hear amazing performers from around the world at one of those exquisite ‘summer cottages’ built by the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers. This year, be sure to catch the 13-concert miniseries in honor of Liszt in his 200th anniversary year.” Find out more at newportmusic.org.

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra Summer Concert Series Wednesdays at 7pm, 7/13–8/31 “99.5 All Classical is so pleased again to be the media partner of this free summer concert series. Pack some munchies and a blanket, and gather with your family at the Hatch Shell to hear gorgeous music under the stars. Landmarks welcomes new conductor Christopher Wilkins.” Info at landmarksorchestra.org. Callie Crossley Host/executive editor, The Callie Crossley Show, 89.7 WGBH Treachery in Death by J.D. Robb (Putnam, Feb 2011) If Sons, Then Heirs: A Novel by Lorene Cary (Atria, Apr 2011) The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson (Random House, Sep 2010) “Every year I promise I’ll head to Cape Ann or Maine, but then I find myself once again on my two-step jaunt via Peter Pan bus and Woods Hole Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. In my beach bag, I’ll have the latest In Death mystery from J.D. Robb, and a new novel from Lorene Cary, If Sons, Then Heirs, a fictionalized story about the great migration North so well told in the nonfiction The Warmth of Other Suns by Boston University professor Isabel Wilkerson. And any day I’m ‘on island,’ you can find me admiring the sunset on a pal’s porch and sipping my favorite summer adult beverage: Vinho Verde, the green Portuguese wine with a touch of fizz. Cheers!” Cathy Fuller Host, Classical Music with Cathy Fuller, 99.5 All Classical Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer by Wesley Stace (Picador, Feb 2011) “It’s not every summer that you can find a thriller with as much stylish and sophisticated musical intrigue as Wesley Stace’s Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer. A composer murders his wife, her lover and himself on the eve of his new opera’s premiere. The opera’s plot is an echo of the triple murder and never gets staged. Highly praised by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross!” Brian McCreath Host, Classical Music with Brian McCreath, 99.5 All Classical Calmus Ensemble at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Fri, 7/15 Rockport, MA “On July 15, two of my favorite places come together when the Calmus Ensemble brings the amazing choral tradition of Leipzig, Germany, to the Rockport Chamber Music Festival’s gorgeous Shalin Liu Performance Center. A spectacular seaside setting, stellar acoustics and a cappella from Brahms to Sting: A definite winner.” Find out more at rcmf.org.
Brian O’Donovan Host, A Celtic Sojourn, 89.7 WGBH Lowell Folk Festival, Fri, 7/29–Sun, 7/31 Boarding House Park, Lowell, MA “Now in its 25th year, this free festival celebrates all the diversity of traditional music, from Irish to Ethiopian to Louisiana Zydeco to Québécois. Not to be missed. Three bands alone are worth the trip: Dervish, a supergroup from Ireland, La Vent du Nord from Canada and Shemekia Copeland. Wow! If you can’t make it to Lowell, listen to WGBH on Saturday afternoon at 3pm for a live broadcast, which I will host.” Info at lowellfolkfestival.org. Two Irish Festivals, Fri, 7/17–Sun, 7/19 “The Boston Irish Festival, produced by the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, offers a great weekend of Irish sports, music, dancing, film, art, food, song and history. The festival will take place at its grounds in Canton, MA, Fri, 7/17–Sun, 7/19 (irishculture.org). The Blackstone River Theatre Summer Solstice Festival presents a day of great artists like Annalivia, Robbie O’Connell, and The Gnomes in Cumberland, RI, on Sat, 7/18.” Details at riverfolk.org. Cristina Quinn Host, Weekend Edition, 89.7 WGBH First Family: Abigail and John Adams by Joseph J. Ellis (Knopf, Oct 2010) “This is a great read that gives us a comprehensive look at the lives of John and Abigail Adams during monumental times in history through the intimate letters they wrote to each other. They were a fascinating couple with a bottomless well of embarrassingly adorable pet names for one another. It’s also really neat reading about local landmarks and events in firsthand detailed accounts. First Family has been my bedside table book for a couple months now, but I’m looking forward to finishing it up at the beach!” Emily Rooney Host, The Emily Rooney Show, 89.7 WGBH Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Eric Larson (Vintage Books, Feb 2004) “Last summer I got off my usual track and wound up reading the Stieg Larsson Dragon Tattoo series, but this summer I’m back with my usual nonfiction indulgence and am about to dig into Eric Larson’s The Devil in the White City.” Saratoga Performing Arts Center Saratoga Springs, NY “As for summer concerts, I like to take in an event or two at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center as I have a summer place at nearby Lake George. They have several events I’m looking forward to in July, including performances by the New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera Saratoga throughout the month.” Learn more at spac.org.
Tennis Hall of Fame Newport, RI “Tennis is my real passion, and I’ll take a day off from playing Saturday, July 9, to attend the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport for the annual inductees ceremony.” Get details at tennisfame.com. Bob Seay Host, Morning Edition, 89.7 WGBH Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals Newport, RI “For me, summer means a chance to enjoy the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, the granddaddies of all summer music festivals. Newport is legendary for good reason. Founder George Wein, now 86 and still running the show, always is able to get the very best in talent—many of whom feel it’s an honor to be invited. Hear great music in an unforgettable setting at Fort Adams State Park overlooking beautiful Newport Harbor. Well into their sixth decade, both festivals are well run and world renowned.” Find details at newportjazzfest.net. Andrea Smarden Reporter, 89.7 WGBH The Imperfectionists: A Novel by Tom Rachman (The Dial Press, Jan 2011) “This story of people who work at a fictional English-language newspaper in Rome weaves together the perspectives of characters at the paper—from its heyday of clacking typewriter keys through the Internet age. Rachman’s book is a great contemplative read for summer. It’s moving, funny, and—as a journalist—it rings uncomfortably true.” Mindy Todd Host, The Point with Mindy Todd, WCAI Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks (Viking, May 2011) “Geraldine Brooks is one of my favorite authors, so I always look forward to her books. This one is based on the true story of the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College in 1665. Little is known about him, but Brooks weaves a tale that not only honors this Wampanoag from Martha’s Vineyard, but also gives insight into what an amazing accomplishment this was.” Cape Cod Melody Tent Hyannis, MA “This intimate venue doesn’t have a bad seat in the house (tent): every seat is within 50 feet of the stage! Concerts this summer range from The Wiggles to Chris Botti to Tony Bennett.” Find out more at melodytent.org.

Global Perspectives on Health Care
New Radio Streams!
Some experts say to control medical costs, America must ration health care. Others argue that care is already rationed in the US, often in hidden ways. It’s a highly charged issue. The World’s David Baron edited the four-part series “Rationing Health: Who Lives? Who Decides?,” which recently received The Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club of America.
Q A
The series looked at medical rationing in four countries. How did you choose those countries? We wanted the stories to complement and build on each other, which meant finding countries that ration care in different ways. South Africa rations dialysis care with hospital committees that choose which patients will be given scarce treatment slots. Britain rations care based on cost-effectiveness, so even if a drug is effective the government won’t pay for it if it doesn’t prolong life or reduce suffering enough to justify the cost. Zambia’s rationing is inadvertent, due to long lines that discourage some patients from seeking care. The India story was a more hopeful tale—a story of a doctor who found a way to avoid the rationing of life-saving care during the swine flu pandemic.
Q A
How does the series’ global look at who gets medical care further the health care conversation in the US? Our series was meant provide some potentially useful case studies. Many countries say they offer universal health coverage, but they also need to keep costs under control, and that means making some hard choices about when and how to limit care. The US may need to make similar hard choices, especially as the new health care law takes effect.
