I recently had the privilege of introducing one of the world-music scene’s great talents, Angelique Kidjo, to an intimate gathering of some 150 WGBH members and friends. They had come together in our Calderwood Studio for a live performance and taping of the first in what we hope will be a series of WGBH-produced concerts for PBS, Live from Guest Street. This month, we’re thrilled to premiere Angelique Kidjo and Friends: Spirit Rising (see page 10) in HD on WGBH 2. “I think of Angelique as a hidden gem,” says WGBH executive producer Laurie Donnelly, the driving force behind the program. “She’s a Grammy Award-winning artist, but she’s not yet a household name. Angelique has collaborated with some of the most talented performers out there today—people with whom she’s formed real relationships, like Josh Groban, Branford Marsalis, Ezra Koenig and Dianne Reeves, all of whom appear in this concert. These are people she really likes to make music with, and that makes for truly powerful television.” The concert also gave Angelique the opportunity to meet, and work with, some of the powerful talent here in Boston and beyond, including The Borromeo String Quartet (New England Conservatory’s Quartet-in-Residence), the horn faculty from Berklee College of Music, The Kuumba Singers of Harvard College and Broadway’s Fela! dancers. “There’s that old saying, ‘Hey, kids, let’s put on a show’,” says Laurie, “and we did. We utilized every nook and cranny of our studios. Artists were practicing in our Yawkey Theater and Fraser Performance Studio…using the mix room in WGBH Radio. We filled every available rehearsal space, and then some for several days leading up to the concert.” This is exactly what we hoped for when we first envisioned our new studios as a living space for great live performances produced in and for Boston, and shared with the nation and world. “A lot of time, WGBH producers are on the road, shooting in other locales,” Laurie says. “This gave us an opportunity to bring the grandness of what we do outside of WGBH, home to WGBH—and to the members who make all our work possible.” I hope you enjoy the concert. We made it for you.

Classics for Kids

Each week host Naomi Lewin takes children (and adults) on a fun exploration of composers, famous works and various periods in classical music history. Classics for Kids focuses on a different composer each month, with each week’s program highlighting a different aspect of his life and work. Lewin uses music accessible to children to relate the composer’s story, illustrate a musical concept and pique a child’s interest (See page 27). American Masters/Maestro James Levine: 40 Years at the Met Wed, 6/1 at 8pm on WGBH 2

A Mythological Moment

The Metropolitan Opera’s premiere production of John Adams’ Nixon in China, conducted by the composer and staged by internationally acclaimed director Peter Sellars, was originally seen live in movie theaters on February 12, 2011 as part of the groundbreaking series The Met: Live in HD, which transmits live performances to more than 1,500 movie theaters and performing arts centers in 46 countries around the world. Nixon in China stars James Maddalena as Richard Nixon, a role he created at the opera’s world premiere in 1987. With a libretto by American poet Alice Goodman, the opera is based on significant moments during President Nixon’s visit to China in February of 1972, with the key political figures as the lead characters: Nixon, First Lady Pat Nixon (Janis Kelly) and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Richard Paul Fink) for the Americans; Chairman Mao Tse-tung (Robert Brubaker), his wife Chiang Ch’ing (Kathleen Kim), and Premier Chou En-lai (Russell Braun) for the Chinese. This production features the work of the world-premiere production’s design team, including set designer Adrianne Lobel, costume designer Dunya Ramicova, lighting designer James F. In celebration of conductor James Levine’s 40th anniversary at the Metropolitan Opera, this film provides a revealing portrait of one of classical music’s giants, exploring how he transformed the Met’s orchestra into one of the great ensembles, elicited legendary performances from leading singers, and nurtured new generations of artists. Capturing the essence of Levine’s unparalleled musicianship and his singular teaching and performance style, this documentary also looks back at creative milestones since his Met debut in 1971 at the age of 28. The film includes intimate scenes between the maestro and longtime collaborator Placido Domingo as they rehearse Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra; intense rehearsals with the Met Orchestra as they prepare for their first performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony at Carnegie Hall; and Levine’s poignant coaching sessions with aspiring young singers preparing to launch their careers.

Check wgbh.org/schedules to see when your favorites are airing. OUT in America OUT in America is an uplifting collection of inspiring personal narratives told through the lens of some of the country’s most prominent Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) figures and pioneers, as well as many ordinary, yet extraordinary, citizens from LGBT communities. The program weaves together diverse stories from urban and rural America, from the heartland to New England, from San Francisco to Harlem. Moving and often humorous, the film offers viewers a glimpse of awakenings, first crushes, unlikely soul mates, intimacy and liberation. While separated by circumstance and upbringing, the film’s subjects are all united in their shared experiences of self-discovery, coming out, pride and love, as well as a triumph over adversity and a true sense of belonging. Wed, 6/8 at 8pm on WGBH 2 Angelique Kidjo and Friends: Spirit Rising Live from Guest Street Time magazine has called her “Africa’s premier diva.” She’s also a woman who embodies the spirit of Africa and is trying to make a difference for her country, Benin. In this hour-long special, taped here at WGBH, Angelique Kidjo pays tribute to her homeland and the richness and beauty of African culture as she knew it growing up. With the help of an intimate group of guest artists including longtime friends Josh Groban, Dianne Reeves, Branford Marsalis and Ezra Koenig—along with local talents such as one of her favorite gospel choirs—Kidjo communicates loud and clear how African music, then and now, has retained a universal spirit and appeal. “It’s music that can talk to people over time and space,” says Kidjo, and this concert special includes the sound and spirit of African percussion, guitar and bass in many of the song selections. Wed, 6/15 at 9pm on WGBH 2 A Place to Live: The Story of Triangle Square What does it mean to be a gay senior citizen trying to survive on limited resources in America? Body and Mind

Boxing is complicated and full of contradictions. It can be bloody, hurtful and cruel. Yet, boxing requires dedication, discipline, focus, grueling work ethic, sacrifice, conditioning and ferocious demands on the body and mind. Verité documentarian Frederick Wiseman’s studies of the many aspects of American life and the human experience have been portrayed in more than 35 films with his trademark fly-on-the-wall style. Wiseman’s Boxing Gym uses the boxing gym as an example of the American “melting pot,” where people of many races and ethnic backgrounds meet, talk and train—and in some cases dream together of success, riches and prominence. A Circle of Friends and Artists

This portrait of the self-taught California artist Emile Norman explores the history of an artist who, at 89, still is working with a passion for life, art, nature and freedom. It was these traits that sustained and inspired him through seven decades of a changing art scene and turbulent times for a gay man in America. The film chronicles Norman’s independent spirit: from his early days on a ranch in the San Gabriel Valley to his success in New York City in the 1940s and ’50s, and why he left the New York art community to find freedom in Big Sur. Norman and Brooks Clement, his partner of 30 years, built a house on the California Coast and created a haven for a circle of friends and artists—a circle that still is growing today. The Last Soviet Generation

My Perestroika is an intimate look at the last generation of Soviet children. Five classmates experienced the hopes of Gorbachev’s reforms and the confusion of the USSR’s dissolution and are now searching for their places in today’s Moscow. With candor and humor, the punk rocker, single mother, entrepreneur and married teachers paint a picture of the challenges, dreams and disappointments of those raised behind the Iron Curtain. Through first-person testimony, verité footage and vintage home movies, this beautifully crafted documentary reveals a Russia rarely seen on film. Radio Spotlight 99.5 All Classical Director Ben Roe: Finely Tuned

Q A

He’s only been on the job for a few months, but 99.5 All Classical’s new managing director Ben Roe has hit the ground running, introducing a number of new programming initiatives. An accomplished Grammy- and Peabody Award-winning producer and NPR’s former Director of Music, Roe has put his classical radio savvy to work by rejuvenating 99.5 All Classical’s weekend lineup, adding more than 16 hours of new local programs. He recently took time out of his busy schedule to talk with WGBH’s Lori Gwyr about his love of radio, his plans for 99.5 All Classical and his initial impressions of WGBH.

Q A

Just how far back does your public radio experience go? I actually grew up listening to WGBH. I’m a “public radio native”—one of the first generation who grew up listening to public radio. It’s absolutely true that the first pledge I ever made to public broadcasting was to WGBH and I was about six years old.

Q A

What are your goals for 99.5 All Classical? I want to provide a classical music service that is fun, appealing and very much reflective of New England—one you’ll want to come back to over and over again. Combining the best of the proud traditions of WGBH and WCRB is a priority. 99.5 All Classical is an important resource for the casual listener and for the professional community. We have to be a prominent voice, both a spotlight and a mirror for our region’s classical music riches. I want to be able to say, “Check out this incredible thing that A Far Cry Orchestra is doing,” and at the same time, be able to reflect on what’s happening in Rockport. At our best, 99.5 is a crossroads of music, ideas and culture.

Q A

What do you like about radio?

I love the sense of imagination and discovery that radio brings. It’s that wonderful feeling people get when they’re listening to our station and they hear a Beethoven symphony for the first time. Radio is far more intimate than television: we can connect with people in a way that is very hard to achieve through any other medium. It is ubiquitous. It’s portable. Certainly, radio is morphing and branching and I embrace the technology that is enhancing it, but I know that the habit of tuning in to the radio is not going to go away any time soon.

Q A

What’s in store for weekends?

We’re adding 16-plus hours of local program ming to our schedule. [See page 27 for new lineup.] Host Ray Brown is returning, and our producer Alan McLellan has a new show. You’ll also hear more of some familiar voices: Cathy Fuller and Laura Carlo. Bringing more of our weekday hosts to the weekend lineup is really important. Weekends are a great opportunity for people to discover, sample and enjoy classical music.

Q A

What makes a great radio host?

I think the most important thing is their “companionship.” They are trusted voices and guides who can introduce you to a lot of music and ideas. People love our hosts for their incredible, encyclopedic knowledge of music, and how they share it. Our hosts connect with our listeners through both their expertise and their easygoing manner. And they’re not afraid to poke fun at themselves. We’re in the business of playing great music all the time, and we also want it to be a welcoming experience. I think our hosts capture that well.

Q A

Tell us about the New England Summer Festivals program. We’ll be showcasing some of our past great recordings and interviews from places like Rockport, Newport, Monadnock Music in New Hampshire and the Boston Early Music Festival, and also sending our hosts out on the road. It’ll be kind of our own Antiques Roadshow around New England: unearthing musical treasures that truly are priceless and sharing them with our listeners.

How is the audience for classical music changing and growing? We had an open house at WDAV in Charlotte, NC, where I was general manager, and I met all these young mothers of toddlers and schoolaged children who put on classical music at night to calm their kids down. We did a program called The Night Music, and they would put their kids to bed with the radio set to our station. I thought, “Now that’s an interesting new demographic.” There’s also a growing audience of Latinos. 99.5 All Classical is adding a bilingual Spanish/English program called Concierto on Friday nights. This is the age of Gustavo Dudamel (the popular Venezuelan-born conductor). We’re seeing an explosion of interest in classical music in the Latino community.

Q A

How is technology changing the way radio connects with listeners? It used to be that WGBH would do a live show from Symphony Hall, broadcast it once and then it was over. But now, with the Web, it’s fantastic that we can have programs available on demand or on mobile DTV or smartphone apps. People sometimes come to wgbh.org just to listen to our Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts from Symphony Hall and Tanglewood— they’re making it a destination, and we actually can see a bump in our Web traffic because of those. Things like podcasts and blogs are really helping to enhance our classical music service. I’m really excited about all the different things that we can do now.

Q A

You’ve been here since March. What’s it like to be part of the WGBH family? There are very few times when I don’t wake up in the morning just fired up with enthusiasm. WGBH has phenomenal classical music resources, including extensive archives and the Fraser Performance Studio, one of the best radio performance and recording spaces I’ve seen. For me, there’s nothing more exciting than introducing our listeners to new works and great performers. That’s one of WGBH’s real strengths. I am thrilled to be here as we build 99.5 into the very best public classical-music service available on-air and online, 24/7.

WGBH, Boston’s NPR® Station for News and Culture In America, Home and Abroad Are One and the Same by Scott Simon, NPR Weekend Edition Saturday Host Only about 30 percent of all US citizens have passports. Sixty percent of Canadians and 75 percent of Britons do. The US Office of Travel and Tourism says that US citizens made 61.5 million trips outside the country in 2009. Bruce Bommarito, chief operating officer of the US Travel Association, says that’s low for a country where so many people have the means to travel, and concludes, “Americans are comfortable in their own environment.” Now, a study like this is often the occasion for commentators to scold Americans for not getting out in the world, and demanding Holiday Inns and McDonalds when we do. I don’t want to do that. There are solid, innocent reasons why Americans may be inclined to stay home. America, after all, is a continent, as much as a country. It takes longer for someone in Des Moines to get to New York or Los Angeles than it does for someone in Paris to get to London or Berlin. And, America’s vastness contains enormous diversity: from glaciers to deserts, skyscrapers to canyons, and from Afghan people to ethnic Zulus. Americans can ski snowy peaks and salute Saguaro cacti in stark deserts without ever needing a passport. American cities like New York and Chicago have restaurants that serve food from every region of Mexico, China, Greece and India, which you don’t see in Mexico, China, Greece or India. Americans may not go overseas as much as we might like. But people from overseas make new lives here all the time. Not every American family may make it to the Eiffel Tower. But millions of Americans may have neighbors from Korea, Cambodia, Russia, Cuba, Italy, Lebanon, Poland and Ethiopia. Everyday life can be cultural exposure here. And, there’s always something else to see. I’ve been to all 50 states. But I’ve never been to the top of the Empire State Building, the Pacific Coast Highway, Mardi Gras or Disney World. But of course it would be good for more Americans to get passports and see the world. Seeing new places opens our eyes, hearts and minds. To arrive some place as a stranger both humbles and revives us, and helps us to see that the other side of the world is the other side of a place that all people share. As astronaut Mark Kelly told the National Prayer Breakfast in February, he has been able to see our planet as he goes around the world—and around and around—from space, and now sees our earth, “as God created it, in the context of God’s vast universe, with the heavens as its ceiling.” Even going around the earth just a little could give us some of that view. NPR’s Peabody Award-winning correspondent Scott Simon brings a well-traveled perspective to his role as host of Weekend Edition Saturday, from 8am to 10am on 89.7 WGBH.

Jazz on WGBH with Steve Schwartz

The Late, Late Show

Host Steve Schwartz features two late greats: vocalist Dakota Staton, whose 1957 album of the same name became her biggest hit, although she continued to record until her passing in 2007, and trumpeter Ted Curson, who made his reputation working with Charles Mingus. Fri, 6/3 at 8pm A Celtic Sojourn

Properous

The seminal group Planxty actually originated as “Prosperous.” Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Liam Óg O’Flynn and Andy Irvine had gotten together in the early 1970s in the village of Prosperous in County Kildare. Their first album, entitled Prosperous, was released in 1970 and had a big impact on the folk world. Host Brian O’Donovan explores this album today. Sat, 6/4 at 3pm Arts & Ideas: L.A. Theater Works

Awake and Sing!

In the Bronx in 1933, a Jewish family struggles to make ends meet. Their daughter is trapped in a loveless marriage of convenience. The family’s bitter war veteran lodger tries to pry the daughter away from her hapless husband, while the family patriarch rails against the evils of capitalism. Mark Ruffalo, Ben Gazzara and Jane Kaczmarek star in Clifford Odets’ masterpiece. Sun, 6/5 at 8pm Sunday Spotlight with Eric Jackson

Chick Corea

Chick Corea was born this day in Chelsea, MA in 1941. Chick goes back and forth between his electronic keyboards and the acoustic piano. Tonight, host Eric Jackson focuses on his acoustic piano work. Sun, 6/5 at 10pm Arts & Ideas: State of the RE: Union

Las Vegas: Bright Lights, Big City, Small Town

These days, two versions of Las Vegas occupy the public imagination. One is of Sin City, home to The Strip, glitter and entertainment. The other is as a dramatic victim of the recent economic recession, a city where whole neighborhoods have been foreclosed upon, where the jobless rate shot up to double digits, and where massive casino and hotel constructions were suspended, leaving hulking ghosts to remind residents of the boom times. In this episode, explore stories of people making Las Vegas home between these two sides of the city, those working to cultivate community in a place that has a reputation for being impersonal. Hosted by Al Letson. Sun, 6/12 at 9pm

A “Man on the Moon” Project for Alzheimer’s

Andrew Sussman’s View of The World

by Sean Corcoran, Senior Reporter at WCAI, WGBH’s Cape and Islands NPR Station

As the new executive producer for The World, how do you see the WGBH/BBC World Service/ PRI collaboration today? As we all know, much in our medium is changing. Even so, I don’t see the unique focus of The World changing, just the means of distribution. This newsroom’s passion for covering world news remains strong.

Sometimes the best stories start with a simple phone call. I knew that Alzheimer’s disease is a scourge, a memory-stealing, brain-clogging affliction with no long-term therapies. But then Jeffrey Morby called me last fall to talk about the disease that promises to bankrupt the country’s healthcare system. By 2050 Alzheimer’s will be a trillion dollar annual problem. That I didn’t know. Morby is a retired banker and his wife Jacqui is an accomplished venture capitalist. From his home on Martha’s Vineyard, Morby said he wanted to use his good fortune “to help humankind.” He said, and I later confirmed, that the federal government annually spends billions of dollars on research into some diseases but less than $500 million on Alzheimer’s. Patients can’t advocate for themselves, and caregivers are exhausted. The nation needs a “Man on the Moon” project to stop Alzheimer’s, he said, so the Morbys and a handchosen group of venture capitalist are getting into the business of trying to cure a disease. And they aren’t interested in making a dime. Morby’s phone call led to last November’s WCAI radio series, “Venture Philanthropy: An Investor’s Approach to Curing Alzheimer’s (online at wgbh.org/wcai/alz.cfm).” It is the story of a small group of high-achieving, motivated families who are using their valuable skills and fortunes to battle Alzheimer’s. They call their group The Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, and the families and their advisers coordinate a “dream team” of medical researchers that move quickly, reacting to and building upon scientific advancements in a focused way. During the week of June 20, I will follow up on the original story with a new five-part series on Alzheimer’s disease that will air during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Q A

What big ideas can listeners of The World expect in the future?

When the show began, we had newspapers from around the world sent to the newsroom and had reporters express-mailing cassette tapes from the field. Today we are much more connected. Perhaps what is most exciting is that The World can now connect with our listeners and have a conversation with people around the globe. Not just informing and entertaining our listeners, but also continuing a rich dialogue.

Q A

What’s the transition been like moving from Producer to Executive Producer? I’ve never worked in a better newsroom with a better group of journalists. I am lucky that that hasn’t changed. It’s both exhilarating and terrifying to go from a daily deadline to really trying to implement an overarching mission for the show and set a direction for the future.

Q A

What’s the biggest perk of having the “corner office”?

There’s plenty of room for people to sit down and talk. I am rarely alone and I’ve gotten countless suggestions on how to improve the décor.

Sundays, 12noon–2pm 99.5’s ace behind-the-scenes producer, the mastermind behind countless Live from Fraser and In Performance programs, now slips in behind the mic for a Sunday-afternoon program of symphonic favorites and other masterworks of the repertoire. Welcome to the airwaves, Alan!

Arias & Barcarolles with Cathy Fuller

Sundays at 6pm Leonard Bernstein was so taken by President Eisenhower’s remark that “I like music with a theme, not all them Arias and Barcarolles,” after a White House concert in 1960 that 30 years later, he produced a song-cycle called Arias and Barcarolles, with a theme Bernstein described as “The Politics of Love.” Similarly inspired, host Cathy Fuller lends her voice to the weekend with a program devoted to an exploration of song—and the art of the vocal recital. Perhaps with a Barcarolle or two!

Pipedreams

Sundays at 11pm Hosted by Michael Barone, Pipedreams is a two-hour program dedicated to organ music performance. Each week the show is themed around a performer, composer, organ, organ maker or venue. Listen closely, as many Boston-area organs and organists are regularly featured on the show!

NPR World of Opera

Sundays at 6pm Opera lovers rejoice! World of Opera with host Lisa Simeone brings listeners compelling performances from top American and international opera companies. Each week, listeners are treated to a full-length opera captured from some of the most storied companies around the world, including the Vienna State Opera, Washington National Opera, Glimmerglass, New York City Opera, Paris National Opera and more. 6/5: Verdi’s Aida 6/12: Rossini’s Otello 6/19: Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride 6/26: Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera

Every Saturday at 7pm, 99.5 All Classical host Ron Della Chiesa returns to his perch at Symphony Hall to bring listeners across New England (and around the world at 995allclassical.org) all of the memorable music and entertainment from the Pops under dynamic Conductor Keith Lockhart. The 2011 Pops broadcast season on 99.5 is brimming with a rich variety of American popular music and favorite light classics. 6/4: Four Americans Keith Lockhart opens the program with four American composers: George Whitefield Chadwick, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Aaron Copland. Then Boston Pops cellist Mihail Jojatu plays Friedrich Gulda’s Concerto, with the live broadcast closing out with Ray Charles protegé Ellis Hall.
