In 1961, more than 400 blacks and whites joined together in courageous acts of civil disobedience, riding buses into the Deep South in dangerous defiance of Jim Crow laws. This month, on the 50th anniversary of those rides, Freedom Riders (a film by WGBH’s American Experience, see page 16) revisits this pivotal moment in our civil rights history and the ordinary, extraordinary people who pioneered change. “I thought it was a great story about the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement that hadn’t been fully explored, and where the main characters were unknown,” says filmmaker Stanley Nelson, whose previous American Experience credits include the award-winning Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple and The Murder of Emmett Till. “It was dangerous and they were alone. There was no protection and no press coverage.” Finding images from those early rides proved challenging. Stanley tracked down never-before-seen home movies and photographs that reveal the terror experienced by the Freedom Riders as mobs bashed in bus windows, shouted racial epithets and brutally attacked them. The film offers a sobering and inspiring look at the powerful impact courageous citizens can have when they band together peacefully to demand basic freedoms. WGBH also is taking the lessons from the Freedom Rides into communities across the country with a Freedom Riders traveling exhibit; with a new curriculum and training for 650 middle and high school teachers, developed in partnership with Facing History and Ourselves; and with a 2011 Student Freedom Ride that pairs some of the original Freedom Riders with 40 college students chosen from across the country. On May 6, they will embark on a 10-day bus ride from Washington, DC to New Orleans to retrace the historic routes. “We’re looking to the Student Ride to promote a dialogue across generations, drawing out not only some of the lessons from the original Freedom Rides, but also how they apply to civic engagement today,” says WGBH’s Mark Samels, executive producer for American Experience. Follow the students’ daily dispatches at pbs.org/freedomriders and facebook.com/ride. Also on the bus: 89.7 WGBH senior reporter Phillip Martin, who’ll be filing reports for us, NPR and The Takeaway (see page 24). And look for a special edition of Basic Black featuring Stanley Nelson later this month (see page 16). “Scrupulously researched, compelling stories that explore the unresolved nature of the American experiment are what American Experience is all about,” says Mark. “We look to the past to shed light on the present.” It’s your support that makes all this possible.

Portrait of a Community

The lives and loves of a 1930s Yorkshire town are explored in this three-part passionate tale of politics in small places, written by Andrew Davies (Little Dorrit, et al.). Ambitious teacher Sarah Burton (Anna Maxwell Martin), having lost her fiancé in World War I, returns to her Yorkshire origins to apply for the job of headmistress at the local girls’ school. Landowner Robert Carne (David Morrissey) mistrusts all she stands for. Penelope Wilton also stars. Masterpiece Classic/South Riding Sun, 5/1, 5/8 & 5/15 at 9pm and 10pm on WGBH 2

Rocket Science

Blending stunningly restored footage with revealing and engaging interviews with the people who were there—the astronauts, family members and journalists—this is an epic story of the heroes, the triumphs and the tragedies of space exploration. Starting with NASA’s beginnings in the Cold War, the series follows the iconic moments of space exploration, from the race to get the first man in space to the first steps on the moon. And with triumph and achievement comes risk and disaster, as the series follows the white-knuckle suspense of Apollo 13 and the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. Laugh Out Loud

Two new British comedies join the Monday night lineup in May: Outnumbered Follow the battle of wills between two parents and their three young children, who are locked into a never-ending contest to see just whose patience will run out first. Testing theories such as not buying broccoli to save money on the weekly shop, and whether or not Jesus should have used his superpowers to combat Herod, the kids ponder the imponderables in the part-improvised comedy that shows how living with kids can provide, at turns, the funniest and the most cringe-worthy experiences. Premieres Mon, 4/9 at 8pm on WGBH 44 Worst Week of My Life Only one week to go before the marriage of Howard and Mel, and it quickly escalates into the week from hell. The series follows the bumbling Howard as he lurches from one appallingly embarrassing disaster to the next in the week leading up to his wedding. Radio Spotlight Jackson Celebrates 30 Years Hosting Jazz on 89.7 WGBH Eric Jackson celebrates 30 years of hosting his own jazz show on WGBH Radio this month. Long considered Boston’s “dean of jazz radio,” Jackson has more recently gained a national and international following with the addition 89.7 WGBH’s live radio streaming—with emails and calls from Seattle, London and even Asia! In 2007, Jackson was honored with JazzWeek’s Radio Programmer of the Year Award. He recently chatted with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about his 30th anniversary on 89.7 WGBH, how he keeps himself and his show fresh, and WGBH’s vital role in Boston’s jazz scene.

Q A

How did you get your start in radio?

I saw an ad in BU’s campus paper for radio announcers, no experience necessary. I thought it would be fun to do while I was in school. So I started doing radio, and at the same time my love of jazz increased. I reached a point where I knew this was it. I worked in commercial radio for several years, and did a series for WGBH

Jazz Week ’11 For Eric, A Two-Night Tribute on Screen and Stage The centerpiece of Jazz Week ’11 will be a two-night tribute to Eric Jackson, May 2 and 6, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his show on 89.7 WGBH: For Eric, Part I Mon, 5/2 at 7:30pm, Scullers Jazz Club, Boston, MA This all-star jazz jam produced by Fred Taylor and hosted by the Scullers Jazz Club includes tributes by Walter Beasley, Grace Kelly, Terri Lynn Carrington, Cecil McBee, Rebecca Parris, George Garzone and Laszlo Gardony. called Essays in Black Music in 1975–76. Then, in 1977, WGBH asked me to fill in for one of the overnight jazz announcers who was going on the road for two weeks. Three weeks went by, then four, then five, and we didn’t hear from him. Finally, he came back after six weeks and said he didn’t want to do radio anymore. WGBH officially hired me, and I started doing my own jazz show in May 1981.

Q A

How does it feel to be celebrating your 30th anniversary? I love doing what I do. One thing about jazz is that the music keeps changing—there’s always new artists, new people in the music business and new fans. I’m the kind of person who would not find it fun to go on vacation by myself, because if I see or hear something beautiful—a lake, a painting, a piece of music—I need someone to share it with. Radio is the perfect place for a “gee whiz kid” like me, because I always have someone to share in the wonderful things I find. To me, that’s exciting. I find things that make me say, “Boy, I can’t wait to play this tonight.”

Q A

How do you prepare for your shows?

I prepare for my show the same way a jazz musician does. Jazz is improvisational music, but the best jazz musicians practice and work on their craft all day long. And that’s basically what I do. I spend most of the day listening to the new releases, or if I’m working on something like my Sunday night Artist Spotlight, I’m digging up pieces. Then, while I’m doing the show, I’m putting pieces together by moods, feelings or even aural connections. It’s a creative process, and WGBH has certainly allowed me to be very creative.

Q A

How do you maintain your enthusiasm and keep your show fresh? I love the music so much, it makes it easy to get up and listen. And, work at the station has opened up so many other opportunities. For example, I’m on the faculty at Northeastern. That’s an outgrowth of doing the show. I wrote a chapter in a book on John Coltrane that came out in September. I teach and lecture, I host concerts,

and I get to meet and interview interesting people. Those are things to me that are the spice in the gumbo.

Q A

How many interviews have you done over the years, and are there any that are particularly memorable? A few years, ago we estimated that I’ve done more than 2,000. I’ve really enjoyed interviewing Wynton Marsalis. He used to be extremely controversial because he was very outspoken about his dislike of fusion and “free” jazz, and I remember the first couple of interviews I did with him, it seemed like every phone in the studio would light up. They would be split about 50–50 between “throw the bum out on his head right now!” and “this is absolutely great!”

Q A

What role does WGBH play in Boston’s jazz community? WGBH is major in Boston’s jazz community. This is where a lot of people get information about new releases, about re-issues, and about who’s coming to town. My show is completely booked up for interviews two months out, so I think the jazz community definitely sees us as a valuable place to be. Musicians and authors know that the WGBH audience not only will listen to the music, but also is interested in finding out more about it. We connect the artists with their audience in an important way. Eric Jackson hosts Jazz on WGBH with Eric Jackson, Monday–Thursday, at 8pm and Eric’s Artist Spotlight on Sundays at 10pm on WGBH 89.7. WGBH, Boston’s nPr® station for news and Culture Revisiting the March on Washington by Gary Mott, WGBH radio Producer many of us who work in public media do so because we love good storytelling. Giving stories the time to unfold gradually is something we take pride in. A good example is the 15-hour radio broadcast on 89.7 WGBH—yes, 15 continuous hours— from Washington dC on a very hot August 28, 1963. the event was the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the greatest civil rights demonstration ever, and the stories that came out of that day changed the course of American history. eight years before national Public radio hit the airwaves, WGBH was one of a network of radio stations dubbed the “educational radio network” (ern) that was there to broadcast from the march. As the broadcast happened, quarter-inch tape was rolling in Boston, recording speeches delivered by martin Luther King, Jr. and 23-year-old John Lewis of the student non-violent Coordinating Committee (recent recipient of the Presidential medal of Honor, given to him by President Obama),

music performed by a very young Bob dylan and Joan Baez, a candid interview with marlon Brando…and much more. Fast-forward to 2003: A colleague of mine in radio was looking around WGBH’s media Library and Archives vault, a large, temperaturecontrolled space built specifically for the preservation of media, and he stumbled upon the reel-to-reel tapes of the ern broadcast. As he discovered shortly thereafter, these were the only tapes of the broadcast in existence! Jump to 2011: thanks to funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Archives Project and save America’s treasures, a partnership between the national endowment for the Arts and the national Park service, and to countless hours of legwork by numerous departments at WGBH, there’s an easy way to access this oneof-a-kind audio and its fully searchable transcriptions. it’s all available at WGBH media Library and Archives’ website, Open vault. Open vault is now home to the entire ern broadcast of the march on Washington, as well as hundreds of hours of archival content from 60 years of public media history. i invite everyone to visit and stumble upon something that will amaze you!

in this episode, radiolab steers its way through a series of stories about getting lost, and asks how our brains, and our hearts, help us find our way back home. Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich host. Sun, 5/1 at 8pm

All Classical

99.5 All Classical is now also broadcast on 96.3 Back Bay/Beacon Hill

Music You Love by Michelle Sweet, Senior Radio Producer Perhaps the next best thing to indulging yourself fully in a piece of classical music that opens up your mind, heart and soul is sharing it with someone else. That’s what we at 99.5 All Classical are most passionate about. It’s why, if you strolled through our cubicles on any given day, you’d find classical music hosts combing archives of more than 10,000 pieces of music recorded by WGBH. Or scouring reviews and sampling the latest CDs, not to mention booking local and touring musicians to perform in our Fraser Performance Studio…all part of our daily effort to bring you the best of Boston’s vibrant classical music scene. This past Valentine’s Day, we thought it would be fun to invite our listeners to tell us about music that they love most. We were thrilled to hear from more than 400 people who told us all about their favorites. Some of the works that we figured would garner lots of votes did not disappoint, including Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No. 9 and Dvořák’s New World Symphony. But there were some surprises in the mix

too: One of the most requested pieces was Ralph Vaughn Williams’s The Lark Ascending. Listeners loved it for its “…beautiful musical replication of peace on earth and in the heavens,” as Elaine from Stoughton put it. Beethoven was the most-frequently requested composer, followed by Bach and Mozart. Big Romantic piano concertos also received a lot of love. One listener said of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2: “One of the first classical pieces I heard, and so was instrumental in forming my solid liking of classical music.” That was a common theme: Many of the very earliest classical works we hear become the pieces that remain dear to us throughout our lives. We also were pleased to include favorite pieces from some young classical music fans. Students from the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Brighton were inspired by Yo-Yo Ma’s performance of Bach’s Suite No. 1 for solo cello, and fifth-graders from Hathaway Elementary School in New Bedford were partial to the formal party atmosphere of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Hearing music you love isn’t something just for Valentine’s Day— every weekday at 4pm, we play music you choose. Just send your request to request@995allclassical.org. And if you’d like to see the entire list of music listeners told us they love, it’s online at 995allclassical.org.

A Sense of Place

Maybe it’s Venice or Paris, daaaahling, with all the beautiful people! Maybe it’s the garden or simply…home. Join host Laura Carlo all this month for great works that describe a place—bustling cities, bucolic countrysides, exotic foreign lands and beyond! All the great composers paid homage to places; think of Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony, Beethoven’s Ruins of Athens, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, or Joaquin Rodrigo’s beloved Concierto de Aranjuez. And please share with us your “sense of place”—where are you most you? Visit 995allclassical.org to submit words or photos. Carlo will read submissions and play music weekday mornings through May. All month, midday host Cathy Fuller explores the delicate and soulful piano masterpieces of French composer Gabriel Fauré. Every weekday, you’ll hear a Fauré Nocturne, Barcarolle, or other piano gem from a set of acclaimed—if little-known— recordings by Germaine Thyssens-Valentin (1902–1987). In Fuller’s words: “These are atmospheric performances that offer direct transportation to the colorful universe of Fauré, with its evocative harmonies and touching streams of melancholy. In the world of pianists, this playing is considered the ultimate Fauré.” Weekdays at 9am

Today, Tokyo boasts more professional orchestras than any other city in the world. As Japan faces daunting challenges in the wake of its recent disasters, it is important to remember that Boston has a special relationship with that country. Boston Pops

It was in 1875 that a young man named Shuji Isawa was sent by the Meiji Japanese government to Massachusetts to get an American education. While in Boston, he befriended a music teacher named Luther Whiting Mason. Mason and Isawa worked together to develop the foundation of the Japanese music education system, and in 1880 Isawa brought Mason to Tokyo to help implement it. They imported pianos and orchestral instruments, developed a teacher training program and helped found Tokyo Ongaku Gakudan, Japan’s first music conservatory. The

This month, we celebrate the 60th consecutive season of complete concerts on the radio of the Boston Pops—a tradition launched by Arthur Fiedler in 1952 on WGBH.
