if, like me, you’re a fan of High School Quiz Show, you know we’re about to enter the final rounds of WGBH’s own version of march madness in celebration of academic achievement. A record-breaking 95 public high school teams from across the state showed up at our studios this past november to take our 100-question qualifying quiz. the top-scoring 16 teams advanced to compete in season 4 of our battle of the brains, hosted by Billy Costa. now we’re down to the final four. this month, they will face off in a blistering round of semifinals, with the winners going head to head for this year’s state championship and the chance to compete in the Governor’s Cup against new Hampshire Public television’s Granite State Challenge high school champions—our first interstate quiz show playoff. “the competition is fierce and fun,” says WGBH executive producer Hillary Wells, who has worked closely with the massachusetts department of elementary and secondary education (which has endorsed the series) and the Princeton review, to add more difficult and nuanced questions, many of them derived from the state’s Advanced Placement curriculum. But you don’t need to know AP calculus to join in the fun. WGBH is thrilled to expand our collaboration with the Princeton review to introduce our first play-along, real-time game that allows viewers to watch the show on television while playing along on their computer or mobile device. You’ll see the entire question and get to select from one of four possible answers. two-screen, real-time gaming has been a huge hit in the UK, and we’re excited to be one of the first public broadcasters to use it stateside to enhance the thrill of learning. shining a spotlight on our Commonwealth’s academic stars and celebrating their coaches, teachers, families and communities is what High School Quiz Show is all about. “i’ve been a teacher for 10 years,” says north Quincy High school coach mera Kriz, “and the experience we’ve had with High School Quiz Show has been hands-down the best in my career.” Let the final games begin…thanks to your annual support. And get ready for next year!

The Color of Identity
How linked is identity to physical appearance? Is the body somehow imprinted, like a passport getting stamped, by the place where one lives? Indelible Lalita explores the story of a woman whose resilient spirit survives her body’s transformation by cancer, heart failure and a dramatic loss of skin pigment. The film follows Lalita as she migrates from Bombay to Paris to Montréal, and becomes completely white along the way. Lalita learns to let go of her body as the sign of her ethnicity and femininity, and ultimately realizes her physical form is just a temporary vessel for her spirit. 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Go Under the Radar with Callie Crossley News consumers face a barrage of headlines throughout the day. Yet amid the noise about the latest high-profile scandal or heated political debate, many small but consequential stories are ignored. But now, WGBH’s awardwinning journalist Callie Crossley is exploring those overlooked pieces of important news on her new show Under the Radar, airing Sundays at 6:30pm on 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio. “It’s an opportunity for listeners to hear the stories they haven’t heard,” Callie says of the 30-minute program. “There are countless stories right here in Greater Boston that are significant, yet remain untold. I bring them to a wider audience and give a platform to the perspectives that often are left out of the biggest stories.” Callie searches alternative presses and community news outlets for a variety of topics that engage underserved communities throughout Boston, and she leads a roundtable conversation with contributors from the Boston area and across New England.

The premiere episode in March took a closer look at Boston’s neighborhood councils, little-known associations created by Mayor Ray Flynn in the 1980s to advise on zoning and licensing issues. John Ruch, editor of the Jamaica Plain and Mission Hill Gazettes, talked about litigation that could give the councils recognition as official government bodies. And Sue O’Connell, co-publisher of the South End News and Bay Windows, discussed a debate over the proposed widening of Melnea Cass Boulevard. Callie’s skills as a broadcaster are familiar to fans of 89.7 and WGBH TV, where she regularly appears on Beat the Press and Basic Black. She also has a national profile as a contributor to CNN’s Reliable Sources, PBS NewsHour and NPR’s The Takeaway. She has won a National Emmy, a Peabody, an Edward R. Murrow Award and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award for her work in broadcast journalism. “Callie brings a unique perspective to every story,” says Phil Redo, managing director of 89.7 WGBH. “And her Under the Radar program further advances 89.7 WGBH’s unwavering commitment to the local and diverse stories that shape Boston and the surrounding communities.”

Galicia and Asturias, provinces in northwest Spain, are increasingly being regarded as Celtic hotbeds because of commonalities of music and culture with Ireland, Brittany, Wales and Scotland. Carlos Núñez, a long-time member of The Chieftains, specializes in the gaita, the unique bagpipe of the region. Host Brian O’Donovan explores this rich musical tradition in advance of Núñez’s appearance at the upcoming The Boston Globe/WGBH Summer Arts Weekend (July 26–28) presented by Citizens Bank. Classical New England The Rites of Spring By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director for Classical Services
With March snows and April showers behind us, it’s time to celebrate some of May’s rites of spring: The return of the Swan Boats in the waters of the Boston Public Garden. The Ducklings Day parade on Boston Common. Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum. And our Classical New England favorite: the return of the Boston Pops!
Music from the Movies…and More
Keith Lockhart will be back on the Pops podium for his 18th season, offering a season-long tribute to the world of movie music, along with programs featuring a wide variety of American musical styles, including jazz, bluegrass, country, gospel, pop, classic standards from the ’50s and ’60s and show-stopping songs of Broadway and the American Songbook. And in the broadcast booth, Classical New England’s Ron Della Chiesa and Laura Carlo will be teaming up to bring you a Boston Pops concert every Saturday night, beginning with a Pops tribute to the cinematic sizzle of Walt Disney’s Fantasia—the 1940 Technicolor masterpiece that introduced symphonic music to music lovers of all ages—as well as latter-day Fantasia 2000 (May 11). Other Pops broadcasts in May include the Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch (May 18), and the perennially popular Gospel Night (May 25), once again led by conductor, pianist and composer Charles Floyd and his all-volunteer Boston Pops Gospel Choir.
The Londoners’ Lockhart
Besides the Pops, you’ll get a rare opportunity to hear Keith Lockhart as Londoners know him: as the principal conductor of the acclaimed BBC Concert Orchestra. Thanks to a special arrangement with the BBC, we’ll bring you two concerts featuring Lockhart leading his London orchestra during a recent American tour, performing some quintessentially English symphonic music, including Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from his opera Peter Grimes, Edward Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations and George Butterworth’s “On the Banks of Green Willow.” One of the concerts will feature Lockhart and the BBC Concert Orchestra in performance at the brand-new Valley Performing Arts Center in southern California, a concert that drew critical raves.

Early Spring
At the end of the month, we’ll mark the 100th anniversary of the premiere of the most famous spring rite of them all: in may of 1913, sergei diaghilev’s Ballets russes, composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer vaslav nijinsky unleashed what’s been described as an “artistic tsunami.” As the Musical Times of London famously wrote in 1913, “the music of Le Sacre du Printemps baffles verbal description. to say that much of it is hideous as sound is a mild description. Practically it has no relation to music at all as most of us know it.” today the Rite of Spring is viewed as one of the great game-changing masterpieces of the 20th century. We’ll tell the story of stravinsky’s most infamous piece via a special documentary: The Rite of Spring—The 100 Year Shock-Wave, which traces the effect of this piece from its initial explosion at the théậtre des ChampsÉlysées in Paris on may 29, 1913, right up to the present time. this show features brief interviews and firsthand recollections of the famous first night from dame marie rambert, who was one of the dancers, and stravinsky, who was in the audience. they lead us through memories of the Berlin premiere in 1923 and the 50th-anniversary performance in London conducted by former BsO music director Pierre monteux, (who was the original conductor in 1913), up to comments on the work’s enduring power from major artists of today, including dancer dame monica mason and conductors sir Colin davis and valery Gergiev. After the documentary, we’ll bring you the music, courtesy of the neC Philharmonia and conductor Hugh Wolff, via a concert broadcast direct from Jordan Hall. Wolff and the school’s top-flight orchestra will recall the notorious Paris premiere of the Rite with an electric performance both of stravinsky’s ballet music and one of the pieces it was paired with on that first program: the Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin.

WCAi, Cape and islands nPr station Gone Fishin’
By mindy todd, WCAi’s managing director for editorial and Host With the return of spring to the Cape and islands, we see daffodils, ospreys and…striped bass. And at WCAi, the start of fishing season brings the return of our popular feature The Fishing News. each week steve Junker, WCAi host of All Things Considered, checks in on the local fishing action. He speaks with editors at On the Water magazine, local anglers and fishing captains to find out who’s catching what around the Cape and islands, and how they’re doing it. “Beginning with the spring arrival of squid, and the migrating striped bass who want to eat them, saltwater fishing is a story that unfolds week after week through the summer and into the fall,” steve says. “Whether it’s anticipating the arrival of bonito, suffering through the July doldrums or using surgical tubing to catch bass, there’s always something interesting to cover.” Listeners who aren’t anglers also say they enjoy the reports because they learn a bit about the many species of fish that swim in our waters. “For so many people, fishing is a family activity,” steve says. “Fishing for snapper blues (juvenile bluefish) from a dock can be a great way to introduce children to fishing. Or you can just grab a bucket, a net and flashlight to hunt for blue crabs.”

For some, the dream fishing trip involves heading 100 miles offshore to the edge of the continental shelf in search of swordfish and yellowfin tuna. Living Well Most of living is about the basics. Paying the bills. Making ends meet. Keeping the plates spinning. And then there’s a part of life… it’s living life well. It’s steak instead of baloney. Art instead of artificial. Something special… like a hand-knotted, hand-made rug from Dover Rug & Home — where you’ll find the largest selection of rugs in New England — from every corner of the world, in every price range with a life-time guarantee. Dover Rug & Home. Dedicated to helping you “live life well.”
