in the opening scene of Nova’s new four-part miniseries The Fabric of the Cosmos, premiering this month (see page 8), renowned physicist and host Brian Greene lets us in on a secret: we’ve all been deceived, fooled and bamboozled. For centuries, our perceptions of time and space have led us astray, says Greene, whose best-selling books inspired both this series and Nova’s earlier, highly acclaimed The Elegant Universe. “the series is a journey that challenges audiences on things they take for granted and an exciting opportunity to change that mindset in startling ways,” says Greene, who will take us from Albert einstein’s theories of relativity, through the quantum revolution, and up to the present to see how physicists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time and the universe. this isn’t eat-your-spinach tv, promises WGBH’s Paula Apsell, Nova senior executive producer. “Look for the most visually compelling and entertaining presentation of modern physics ever seen on television,” she says. Greene and the Nova team interweave provocative theories, experiments and stories with crystal-clear explanations, imaginative metaphors and mind-bending, state-of-the-art computer graphics that are Nova’s hallmarks. Why tackle such a difficult subject? “there’s a great hunger out there for the big ideas of science,” Paula says. “sharing those ideas in an accessible and entertaining way has been part of Nova’s mission since day one. With The Fabric of the Cosmos, our viewers will discover that just beneath the surface lies a world we’d hardly recognize—one that is far stranger and more wondrous than anyone expected.” We know that more and more people are accessing our rich content across a variety of devices, which is why WGBH and PBs are offering episode one, What Is Space?, nine days in advance of the broadcast date on iPads, iPhones and iPod touches (see below for details) to reach out to a new generation of science enthusiasts. the entire series also will be available for Web and mobile viewing the day following each episode premiere. the best science on television—and beyond—just keeps getting better, thanks to your generous annual support!

Bend Your Mind
Like the hologram on your credit card, space may just be a projection of a deeper twodimensional reality, taking place on a distant surface that surrounds us. the deep sense we have of time passing from present to past may be nothing more than an illusion. And to top it all off, there may be multiple universes, some almost indistinguishable from our own, others that may contain variations of all of us, and still others where reality may be so radically different it is unrecognizable. Acclaimed physicist and host Brian Greene tackles these mind-bending scientific ideas in a new, four-hour, WGBH-produced Nova special series, The Fabric of the Cosmos. tune in to discover how scientists are piecing together the grand puzzle of the universe. Find out more at pbs.org/nova/fabric The Fabric of the Cosmos Wed, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16 & 11/23 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Hunting War Criminals
during the nuremberg War Crime trials, approximately 1,000 nazi officials were convicted of crimes against humanity. But tens of thousands evaded prosecution and thousands of nazi criminals are presumed to be still alive. Featuring portraits of the men and women who conducted investigations and led manhunts over six decades, Nazi Hunt: Elusive Justice explores how governments and institutions failed to uphold their own laws—forcing individuals to act independently—and relates the extraordinary efforts to locate, prosecute and punish fugitive nazis worldwide. Upstairs? Downstairs?
When wildlife artist and naturalist Joe Hutto wants to “talk turkey,” he means something quite different than what you might think, because he actually does talk turkey. Hutto spent more than a year as the full-time parent of a clutch of young turkeys he raised from hatchlings to adults. during that time, his turkey children were his only companions as he walked them through Florida’s Flatwoods. What started as an informal science experiment became a very personal, emotional journey that changed his life in ways he could never have imagined. Based on Hutto’s book, Illumination in the Flatwoods. Nature/My Life as a Turkey Wed, 11/16 at 8pm on WGBH 2 14 Full schedules: wgbh.org; Get magazine online: wgbh.org/gopaperless

in celebration of native American Heritage month, WGBH presents We Still Live Here: Âs Nutayuneân. in 1994, Jessie Little Doe, an intrepid Wampanoag social worker, began having recurring dreams: familiar-looking people from another time addressing her in an incomprehensible language. eventually she realized they were speaking Wampanoag, a language no one had used for more than a century. these events sent her and members of the southeastern massachusetts Aquinnah and mashpee Wampanoag communities on an odyssey that would uncover hundreds of documents written in their language, spur Jessie to earn a masters in Linguistics from mit, and accomplish something that had never been done before: bring a language back to life in an American indian community after many generations without native speakers. Woody Allen Up Close
For the first time ever, filmmaker Robert Weide documents Woody Allen’s life and creative process in a film biography that chronicles the trajectory and longevity of Allen’s career, from his work in the 1950s– ’60s as a TV scribe for Sid Caesar, standup comedian and frequent TV talk show guest, to a writer-director averaging one film per year for more than 40 years. See Allen in venues ranging from the London set of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger to his New York home, to his childhood haunts in Brooklyn’s Midwood section. Features interviews with actors Julie Kavner, Diane Keaton, Martin Landau and Dianne Wiest; writing collaborators Marshall Brickman, Mickey Rose and Doug McGrath; and pals Dick Cavett and Martin Scorsese, who provide insight and the backstory to this American icon. it has been called the most spectacular terror attack since 9/11. On the night of november 26, 2008, 10 men armed with guns and grenades launched an assault on mumbai with a military precision that left 166 dead. india quickly learned the attackers belonged to Lashkar-e-taiba, a Pakistani militant group associated with Pakistan’s secretive intelligence agency, the isi. But what wasn’t known then was that a Lashkar/isi operative had been casing the city for two years, developing a blueprint for terror. His name was david Coleman Headley, and he’d been chosen for the job because he had the perfect cover: he was an American citizen. Frontline and ProPublica reporter sebastian rotella team up to investigate the mysterious circumstances behind Headley’s rise from heroin dealer and Us government informant to master plotter of the 2008 attack on mumbai. Radio Spotlight Garrison Keillor Tells His Story One of the great storytellers of our time, Garrison Keillor has been hosting A Prairie Home Companion every week for 38 years. Keillor’s tales from the fictional Minnesota town of Lake Wobegon, along with comedy sketches, music and mysteries, are heard by 4 million fans on 590 public radio stations nationwide (including 89.7 WGBH and WCAI), as well as abroad on America One and Armed Services Networks. A prolific writer, Keillor has penned more than a dozen books, a screenplay, a weekly newspaper column and an advice column. And he’s partnered with WGBH on Poetry Everywhere, a radio, television and Web initiative (pbs.org/wgbh/poetryeverywhere) that gives audiences access to a rich diversity of poetic voices. Keillor recently chatted with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about how he got started in radio and what role radio plays in today’s world.
Q A
What drew you to radio initially?
Amazing good luck. I wish that I could lay it out for you as some sort of rational step, a boy with a dream. But when I look back, all I see are extremely fortuitous circumstances. When I went off to college, I was a tall, awkward, lonely 18-year-old. I walked into the student radio station on a hunch. I just wanted to be part of something and to have a place to go to eat my lunch. Within a month or so, I was doing a daily radio show.
Q A
What has kept you in radio for almost four decades? I am a writer. I sat down this morning and worked on a novel that I’m close to finishing all by myself in a little room, which is what I do every day. Musicians are social people, and radio became my social group. I first made friends with musicians in college. They would come to my house because I was a good host. I had cases of beer and big pots of jambalaya, and they would stay and play for hours. It was with those musicians that I started A Prairie Home Companion. Then, of course, when you’ve done something for 30-some years, it becomes a part of you.
Q A
What are the best and worst parts of doing a live radio show? The best part is that you never have to sit and listen to it yourself. If I sat in a control room, I wouldn’t like the way it sounded. I
Q
You recently collaborated with WGBH on our Poetry Everywhere project. What kinds of connections do you see between poetry and radio? Radio is a great medium for the individual voice and it’s the perfect medium for poetry. People often do not realize they love poetry because they have only encountered it in stuffy circumstances—high art and hushed audiences and famous poets orating. But to me, poetry at heart is simple, straightforward speech without irony. Poetry allows a person to unabashedly admire the beauty and delicacy of the world, and to praise a hardboiled egg or a graceful backhand. We should do more with this.
A
would end up fussing with it and would take two and a half days to do a two-hour show. Live shows are economical, in terms of time. The bad part is that there are silly mistakes, lapses and things that get botched. But there’s an electric connection to the listeners that wouldn’t be there if it was heavily edited and produced.
Q A
Have you ever drawn a blank doing your weekly monologue, “The News from Lake Wobegon”? Sure. I think most people who speak impromptu do. You learn to talk in a circular way, circling around like a dog in the woods looking for a scent. It’s not as perilous as it may seem. You throw yourself in the hands of the audience, and they uphold you.
Q A
Do you have a favorite radio sound effect? Fred Newman, who goes on tour with us, does a very simple sound effect that breaks me up every time. It’s a man holding his hand in front of his mouth and exhaling to see if his breath is bad. It’s a hard effect to do. He also does a terrific three-speed bike, all kinds of cell phones, dolphins, dogs, jackals, tropical birds. If I ask him to do an elderly Irish dolphin smoking a cigar, he can do that. I wouldn’t even need to tell him in advance, I could just throw that at him.
Q
In addition to doing A Prairie Home Companion, you’ve also written novels, essays, a screenplay, even an advice column. Is there anything you haven’t done but would like to do? I really want to write a play. Right now, I’m finishing a Lake Wobegon screenplay and a Guy Noir mystery. But I’d really like to do a play.
A
Q A
What role does public radio play into today’s media landscape? When I started out in public radio, it was the alternative to mainstream commercial radio, which was the big friendly station with jolly male voices where you got weather, news and school closings. Every city had one. Now, public radio has become the mainstream, and commercial radio caters to small niches. This puts a burden on us to serve a much broader audience than we ever imagined. People now depend on public radio for news because commercial radio and television have abandoned journalism.
Q
A Prairie Home Companion is heard exclusively on 89.7 WGBH in the Boston area and is one of our most popular shows. You’ve chosen Boston as one of the stops on your individual tour this year. What is your connection to Boston? We haven’t done a broadcast from Boston in a while because we’ve been doing it at Tanglewood, which we adore. There’s just no place like it. We usually close the season at Tanglewood, and then go back to the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, sit on the porch, and gradually feel the weight of the season slip away. Boston is a part of the country that I don’t claim to know very well, but I always love coming back here.
A
Garrison Keillor will be performing a one-man show at Symphony Hall on Sunday, November 13. Tune in A Prairie Home Companion on 89.7 WGBH at 6pm on Saturdays and 12noon on Sundays, or listen online at wgbh.org/897. Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/897 23
WGBH, Boston Public Radio Jeb Sharp Takes on New Challenges at The World In July, award-winning journalist Jeb Sharp took on a new role: show producer for The World, co-produced by WGBH in partnership with PRI and the BBC. In her years as a reporter for The World, Sharp covered everything from ethnic conflict in Kosovo to traffic safety in Tanzania. But this is a new challenge for the former Harvard Nieman fellow. Sharp talks about her vision for The World.
Q A
What is the role of show producer and what are your plans for the future? The show producer sets the agenda for the daily broadcast. That involves everything from leading the morning meeting to assigning producers, to coordinating with editors, with the Web team, with the engineering staff. I sit at the vortex of all the action, so communication is my most important role. For the future, I plan to push the boundaries of what we’ve already achieved: to make The World indispensable listening, more global, more diverse, more compelling and more interesting than any other international news show around.
Q
You’ve stepped into your new role at The World at a very interesting time for news, particularly with what’s happening in the Middle East and North Africa. What has the daily deadline of putting together a broadcast by 3pm every day been like? Honestly, putting together a daily broadcast is always intense. When there’s exciting news happening, we work even harder than usual, but somehow it feels easier because there’s so much adrenaline and camaraderie. The pace and cohesion can be exhilarating.
A
Q A
What can listeners look forward to from The World?
The show is growing and evolving all the time. I think listeners will notice even more depth and variety, and some experiments with form as we integrate radio and Web.
Q A
You still are planning on doing some reporting, but what has the transition from daily reporter to show producer been like? The two jobs are so utterly different it’s more like a transformation than a transition. There’s a rhythm to reporting that’s quite varied, depending on whether you’re just starting out on a project or immersed in it or driving through to completion. When I’m reporting, even if I’m talking to lots of people or busy running around out in the field, I’m in my own head somehow. Producing the show is much more external. There’s so much interaction with colleagues—I have to be continually alert, flexible, open and communicating.

Classical New England Classical Music for Boston, New England and the World By Ben Roe WGBH Managing Director of Classical Services
In recent weeks you’ve probably noticed a new name and a new sound for WGBH’s classical service. Why? Well, as WGBH marks its 60th broadcast anniversary, “Classical New England” represents both our stepped-up commitment to produce programming that reflects our region (including our New England Summer Festivals series), as well as the expansion of our over-the-air reach that now extends to five states, thanks to bringing full-time classical music back to Rhode Island via our 88.7 signal at Bryant University. With our new name comes a new weekday schedule that brings you more hours of local voices and music, and expanded Boston Symphony Orchestra coverage for your weekends. We’ve launched a new weekday schedule that expands WGBH’s classical service to 18 hours of locally produced programming per day. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity, check out the new lineup, which features listener favorites Laura Carlo, Cathy Fuller and James David Jacobs in their new on-air schedules, as well as the addition of Alan McLellan in the middays, Performance Today to weeknights, and on Friday nights, Concierto hosted by Frank Dominguez. In addition, Classical New England has added a number of new weekday features, including Café Europa’s lunchtime concert performances from the great European musical capitals, Drive Time Live’s “commuter concerts” every Friday afternoon with Cathy Fuller, and regular arts and culture reports from around the region from online producer and Bach Hour host Brian McCreath. To assist in shaping the music programming and sound for Classical New England, WGBH welcomes Cheryl Willoughby to our team as music director. Cheryl comes to WGBH from Vermont Public Radio,
where she served as music director and director of programming for VPR Classical. Our new weekend schedule includes more opportunities to hear the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops and Tanglewood concerts both online and throughout New England. Classical New England now airs BSO concerts live on Saturday nights, and repeats them on Sunday afternoons. Each broadcast also is available for on-demand listening via our new website: classicalnewengland.org. Moreover, broadcast concerts from both Symphony Hall and Tanglewood will be available for the first time ever to stations throughout the six New England states, as well as the Capitol region of upstate New York. Tune in, log on or find us on the WGBH Mobile App (available for free from the iTunes Store)…and let us know how Classical New England works for you!
Song of America
Sundays at 10pm Song of America explores the history of American culture through the eyes of our poets and the ears of our composers. Developed and hosted by baritone Thomas Hampson, the series treats American classic song—poetry set to music by American composers—as a vibrant diary of the American experience. Each program focuses on a particular topic that sheds light on a larger theme in American history, and includes songs drawn from archival and modern recordings, plus stories and insights from Hampson about the people and events that inspired those songs.
