I’m a big theatergoer. I love the drama, the music and lyrics, the passion, the bright lights and the chance to experience inspired performances up-close. But I’ve often wondered how the talented performers who put on the greasepaint every night get their start. One answer is the National High School Musical Theater Awards competition, popularly known as “The Jimmy Awards” (named in honor of renowned Broadway theater owner and producer James M. Nederlander). Each year, hundreds of talented high schoolers from across the country vie for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to step onto a Broadway stage. This month, in a television first, we’re thrilled to bring you the competition in a new, three-part WGBH-produced miniseries for PBS called Broadway or Bust (page 10). You’ll follow America’s top high school musical theater performers, from their hometown tryouts through a make-it-or-break-it week of rehearsals, coaching and auditions capped by an awards event in front of a live audience and a panel of high-profile judges. The final hour takes place during a star-studded evening at Broadway’s famed Minskoff Theatre, where the top female and male Jimmy Award winners are chosen. This is a rare opportunity to see what it takes to make it to the Great White Way. As a parent, I’m particularly pleased that this series gives us a chance to turn the spotlight on the discipline and resiliency needed to follow your passion, and also on the critical role of supportive coaches. “You’ll witness the enormous talent of these young performers, and the emotional process they endure as they compete for a shot at Broadway,” says WGBH executive producer Laurie Donnelly. “We believe they’ll touch your hearts, as they have ours.” The series is airing as part of the PBS Arts fall lineup and is produced in collaboration with Lance K. Shultz in association with the National High School Musical Theater Awards, which gave WGBH unprecedented access. I hope you’ll join me in watching Broadway or Bust, and give these talented young performers, and yourselves, a standing ovation. This fascinating and inspiring documentary series could not have happened without your generous annual support!

New PBS Kids Show!

Meet Daniel Tiger

There’s a new tiger in the neighborhood, and he’s no ordinary feline. It’s fouryear-old Daniel Tiger, son of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’s beloved Daniel Striped Tiger. Young Daniel has got his own show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. He is joined by his friends O the Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday and Miss Elaina. Through imagination, creativity and music, kids learn key social skills necessary for school and for life. Each episode presents two engaging stories that center on a common early learning topic, such as dealing with disappointment. Catchy lyrics reinforce each theme, and every story includes imaginative moments sure to entertain and educate. Broadway Bound

WGBH is bound for Broadway with a documentary series that tracks the real-life stories of America’s top high school musical performers, vying in the ultimate competition to find the nation’s best young theater stars. Part competition, part performance and part non-fiction drama, Broadway or Bust begins in regional competitions, where judges select the best performers in the country. The 60 finalists then descend on Broadway, where they plunge into the eye of the theatrical storm for one intense week of rehearsals, coaching, mentoring and competition. The weeks culminates in The National High School Musical Theater Awards (a.k.a. The Jimmy Awards), a one night, star-studded event held at the Minskoff Theatre in New York. That night, the judges select and anoint the nation’s leading male and female high school musical theater performers. Who will it be? Follow the build-up and the heartbreak, the drama and disappointment, in our three-part series that takes you behind the curtain. Broadway or Bust Sun, 9/9, 9/16 & 9/23 at 8pm on WGBH 2

New from Ric Burns

Death and the Civil War

Three women (circa 1900) looking at graves at the Confederate Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina

In Death and the Civil War, producer Ric Burns explores an essential but largely overlooked aspect of the most pivotal event in American history: how the staggering casualties of the Civil War ushered in death as Americans had never experienced before—permanently altering the character of the Republic and the psyche of the American people. The work of contending with death on an unprecedented scale posed challenges that called forth heroic efforts as Americans worked to improvise new solutions, new institutions and new ways of coping with death. Presented by WGBH’s American Experience, the film tracks the increasingly lethal arc of the war, from its all but bloodless opening, through the chaos of Shiloh, Antietam, and Gettysburg— down through the struggle, in the war’s aftermath, to cope with an American landscape littered with the bodies of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, many unburied, most unidentified. Based on Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust’s groundbreaking book, This Republic of Suffering.

Words from a Soldier

Death and the Civil War gives voice to some of the soldiers who died during the epic conflict. Here is an excerpt from a letter mentioned in the film from 26-year-old James Robert Montgomery, a private in the Confederate Signal Corps in Virginia, to his father back home in Camden, Mississippi: Dear Father. This is my last letter to you…I have been struck by a piece of shell and my right shoulder is horribly mangled & I know death is inevitable. I am very weak but I write to you because I know you would be delighted to read a word from your dying son. I know death is near, that I will die far from home and friends of my early youth but I have friends here too who are kind to me. My friend Fairfax will write you at my request and give you the particulars of my death. My grave will be marked so that you may visit it if you desire to do so. … Again, a long farewell to you. May we meet in heaven. Your dying son, J. R. Education Matters

Each year, more than 1 million students drop out of high school. One in four public high school students fail to graduate. In Dropout Nation, WGBH’s Frontline’s follows a group of students in Houston, Texas, to explore the challenges faced by students as they struggle to stay in school and administrators who are working against the odds to keep them there. Frontline’s Dropout Nation is part of the American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen campaign, a public media initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help students stay on the path to graduation. The centerpiece of the campaign is American Graduate Day USA, a seven-hour broadcast and outreach event. Each half-hour of the broadcast tells the story of a community organization and how it provides support, advice and intervention services to at-risk students, families and schools. With every organization profile, viewers will be invited to take an active role in the group’s work by calling a free telephone number or going online to learn how to get involved. “What stands out about our experience with It’s Your Move was walking into the new abode with everything in place and liking it just as it was.

it felt like home.

We had no desire to return to our former home. You thought of everything. Even called the phone company to let them know our phone was out of order. The only thing I needed was a pair of roller skates to keep up with you.” - ND, Framingham, MA

Radio Spotlight 89.7’s Edgar Herwick talks Boston Public Radio Earlier this summer, the two-hour Boston Public Radio premiered on 89.7 WGBH. Airing weekdays at 12noon, the new program highlights and synthesizes the talents of a variety of WGBH contributors, including producer/arts reporter Edgar B. Herwick III. WGBH’s Matt Roy recently spoke with Herwick about a show he says is “reimagining what public radio sounds like.”

Q A

Describe the idea behind Boston Public Radio. We wanted to offer our listeners a different kind of public radio program. Something live—and lively—that puts the greater Boston region squarely in the spotlight. We wanted to create a format that’s flexible and allows us to showcase the strengths of WGBH’s Callie Crossley and Emily Rooney, but also feature a range of other voices like Kara Miller, who is terrific at covering innovation in the city.

Q A

What do listeners hear?

The traditional public radio program, whether it’s local or national, usually features one or two hosts, and it’s an hour long. We offer a different flavor. Callie is the show’s moderator—its connective tissue—but on a given day Emily might start the show with a 20-minute conversation with a city councilor and then hand it to Callie, who could hand it to Kara or myself. Every day is different: Monday doesn’t sound like Tuesday. You hear commentary on the news of the day, but also segments about a film festival in Lowell or a new social media start-up in Kendall Square. You hear Boston in a way you won’t hear it anywhere else, in all its complexity and with the unique array of things it has to offer.

Q A

What are some of the strengths of the show’s contributors? Callie is bright, has a broad range of knowledge and is naturally curious, which makes her a great interviewer. She has a genuine warmth and is inviting on air. You hear Callie having a conversation with somebody and it’s delightful. Emily is a total pro. Nobody knows the local beat better

than she does—she instinctively understands what the core of every story is. And if something doesn’t ring true, she’s not satisfied until she gets an answer that does. Kara is so smart and such a bulldog when it comes to research. She cuts through the jargon and is expert at getting at why listeners should care. Greater Boston’s Adam Reilly will occasionally contribute. He’s sharp, funny and knows local politics. He can ask a tough question without it feeling like a tough question.

Q A

You’re behind the scenes but you’re also on air. Talk about your role. I’m a producer/host, which means I produce segments for Emily or Callie throughout the week and then on Thursdays and Fridays I’m on air with my own segments. I cover the arts—music and culture—but with a focus on what’s happening on the edges, what’s bubbling up from the streets. Instead of a major opening at the MFA, I’ll profile a street artist. I’ll sit down with a local musician who might not be on most people’s radar or highlight what’s going on at a small experimental theater in Davis Square.

Q A

Why are you drawn to this beat?

Part of it is my background. I’m a performer and things like music, theater and film have been in my bones from the time I was young. And part of it is Boston: it’s a vibrant community with so many people who are approaching their lives and work from really interesting angles. At their best, the arts express the essential parts of the human experience. Stories that aim to express or challenge or understand what it is to be in the world are often at the heart of people’s paintings, films and music. Those are the kinds of stories that I like to hear, and the kind I’m trying to tell.

Q A

You mentioned your performance background. Tell us more. I play guitar, I sing and I’m a pretty serious dancer. I teach the Lindy Hop (swing dancing) with a local dance studio. Before I moved to Boston, I did a lot of theater—as an actor and a director—and I was a member of a sketch comedy troupe in Philadelphia.

“You hear Boston in a way you won’t hear it anywhere else, in all its complexity and with the unique array of things it has to offer.”

Q A

Is there anything you’ve learned from performing that you apply to your radio job? Definitely. I picked up a lot of the raw skills that I use to produce radio from doing sketch comedy. We would put together a new hour-long show every month, and just like a radio show, it had segments of varying length. We had to make them fit together and figure out how to transition from one sketch to the next. On radio, we have these disparate pieces that we need to pull together, make cohesive and seamlessly guide the listener through them.

Q A

What’s your vision for Boston Public Radio? We want to be a place where people hear stories and voices they don’t hear anywhere else, from a Harvard professor to a corn farmer; where they hear from somebody in the state’s Department of Education, but also a teacher; where they hear from listeners who share their experiences and describe how some local or national issue is affecting them. We aim to be lively, more conversational. The goal is for two hours of radio to feel like a place where people want to stop by and see what’s happening. Boston Public Radio can be heard weekdays from noon to 2pm on 89.7 WGBH and wgbh.org/news. The show is rebroadcast at 9pm Monday through Thursday evenings.

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio The New WGBH Newsroom By Phil Redo Managing Director

We’re excited. By the time you read this, all of WGBH’s news programs will have been consolidated on the second floor of One Guest Street in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood. The new WGBH newsroom will pool all the individual resources involved in gathering, assembling and reporting local news and information. By combining our efforts, WGBH will have the only fully integrated public media newsroom in New England. This means the staff of WGBH TV’s Greater Boston will be sitting alongside 89.7’s radio reporters, producers, hosts, talk-show staff and our digital editorial team. It also means that the producers who work on Basic Black, Neighborhood Kitchens (our new local series exploring culture through food), and WGBH’s Forum Network (a PBS and NPR public media service that provides thousands of free online lectures) all will be in on the conversations and planning that occur throughout the daily news cycles. Many years ago, Bell Laboratories experimented with just such an environment. Cited as perhaps the most innovative business and scientific setting in the world, it contributed more than just scientific achievements, demonstrating how important it is to build a physical workplace and culture in which smart people from different disciplines work in close proximity to one another.

While WGBH’s news programs are a bit different from the original 20thcentury Bell Labs, the idea pioneered back then is no less powerful. Creative interaction among radio, television and digital platforms has enormous potential. Our new space offers an open environment conducive to the serendipity that can happen when different job functions work side-by-side. And with our new newsroom, we expect to serve you with more timely, integrated and informed local coverage for many years to come. The WGBH newsroom will soon be added to the official WGBH tour (wgbh.org/tours). We hope you’ll come by to see us in action producing the news made possible by your generous annual support.

Classical New England Opera Bash, with a Dash of Baroque…and the BSO! By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services

Orfeo Ed Eurydice, from Boston Baroque

Once again, Classical New England is teaming up with WGBH 2 and 44 to present our annual Labor Day Opera Bash. On television, you’ll be able to revel in 35 hours of opera (see page 8). On radio, Classical New England will bring you “Opera Without Words” programming all weekend long—as well as a few special broadcasts featuring some spectacular singing. Here are just some of the exceptional productions scheduled:

The Damnation of Faust, from Tanglewood

We’ll revisit the riveting performance by mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, with baritone Willard White and bass-baritone Christopher Felgum, conducted by Charles Dutoit. The performance was originally part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s landmark 75th-anniversary season at Tanglewood. Sat, 9/1 at 7pm

Wagner Without Words, from Tanglewood

Our salute to the operatic tradition at Tanglewood continues Sunday afternoon, when conductor Asher Fisch leads the BSO in a reconstruction of the never-completed concert programmed for August 12, 1937: Wagner’s Overtures to Rienzi and Tannhäuser, “Forest Murmurs” from Siegfried and more. (The 1937 concert was rained out, providing the impetus for the construction of the Koussevitzky Music Shed.) Sun, 9/2 at 1pm

It’s been called history’s first “reform” opera: “No jealous queen, no conspirators, no invading army, no slave girl switched at birth, no gods intervening,” says the Boston Classical Review. Instead it’s a simple (?) tale of “Boy meet girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl back. Boy loses girl again. Boy gets girl back again.” British countertenor Owen Willetts stars as star-crossed Orfeo, in a Boston Baroque performance (complete with ballet music) that also features soprano Mary Wilson as Eurydice. Martin Pearlman conducts this performance, recorded at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Sun 9/2 at 3pm

Niobe, from the Boston Early Music Festival

Classical New England is proud to present the world broadcast premiere of what The Boston Globe’s Jeremy Eichler called the centerpiece of the 2011 Boston Early Music Festival: “a sprawlingly ambitious, memorably colorful, occasionally transporting work by Agostino Steffani called ‘Niobe: Regina di Tebe.’” Boston favorite Amanda Forsythe sings the title role of Niobe, Queen of Thebes, and emerging French superstar Philippe Jaroussky plays the role of the troubled king-in-exile Anfione. Stephen Stubbs and Paul O’Dette lead the BEMF orchestra in a performance recorded at the Cutler Majestic Theatre. Sun, 9/2 at 6:30pm

Build Your Library

Opening Your Ears to Opera By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services

“Opera, next to Gothic architecture, is one of the strangest inventions of Western man. It could not have been foreseen by any logical process.” —Lord Kenneth Clark Opera. Unique among art forms, it’s an improbably cohesive combination of high art and kitsch, slapstick comedy and intensely emotional human drama. At its grandest, it’s a Speilbergian overload of sweeping scores, swooning singers, seductive dancers and choristers and, to be sure, stupendous sets and costumes. But what so many people adore about opera is precisely what makes it so incomprehensible to so many others. Which is a shame, for the lure of the operatic stage has been irresistible to legions of composers, and has spawned some of the greatest moments in all of what we call classical music. So, as we celebrate Opera Bash on WGBH 2 and 44, as well as on Classical New England, we thought we’d share some suggestions for enlivening your appreciation of opera. We think Lord Clark would approve. First, start with a good book: You can’t go wrong with The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Opera by William Berger. At 240 pages, it’s an easy, entertaining and informative guide for the lay reader, from the author of the acclaimed books Wagner Without Fear and Verdi With a Vengeance.

Introducing Our New Piano Podcast By Cathy Fuller Classical New England Program Host Eighty-eight keys, each with its own hammer and string assembly, contained within a massive wooden case and attached to a giant cast iron plate. It sounds so…industrial. And indeed, the act of creating a piano is pure hard work. But the act of playing the piano results in some of the most miraculous sounds human beings are capable of. And the act of hearing the piano opens up vast expanses of emotional space and variety, which we intend to explore on Benchmarks, Classical New England’s new podcast available both on the iTunes store and on our website. Each program—which you can enjoy on-demand or download to take with you—will be dedicated to bringing you extraordinary performances that harness the power and intimacy only available through this monument to human ingenuity and artistic invention. The performances you will hear on each and every podcast will be unique and exclusive, drawn from Classical New England’s Fraser Performance Studio and concert halls around the region. I hope you’ll get the chance to join me for some of the music (and words) of some of today’s great artists of the piano.

This article is part of Classical New England’s occasional “Build Your Library” series. Look for more recommendations in future Explore! guides. Want some listening to go along with your reading? Then you’re ready for The A–Z of Opera from Naxos. There’s a reason this item is so popular: 39 tracks on two CDs of operatic selections, ranging from Monteverdi to the mid-20th century, accompanied with a 762-page “booklet” (more like an “encyclopedia-let”). It’s a fabulous starter set for anyone discovering the world of opera. Ready to dive in a little deeper, and enjoy an opera from start to finish? There’s no better place to start than with the opera that has been in almost continuous performance since it premiered in February of 1816—to a chorus of boos, believe it or not!— Giacchino Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Author and Juilliard School faculty member David Dubal explains the opera’s immediate (and lasting) charm: “Rossini’s music is crystal clear: his constructions are tight; the harmony is clever and diatonic; above all, the melodies are easy to remember. Rossini was the first tunesmith; one might even say that he was the inventor of the pop song. He caught the ear of a growing middle-class public with music that appealed as never before to a mass audience.” Try Sir Neville’s Marriner’s recording, featuring Thomas Allen and Agnes Baltsa in the main roles. Curiosity raised? We’re just beginning! Visit us online at (see below) for more recommendations from the Classical New England staff that will accompany your journey to the place the acclaimed director Franco Zeffirelli calls “a planet where the muses work together, join hands and celebrate all the arts.”

Last Night of the Proms 2012 Between the end of Tanglewood and the start of the BSO’s Symphony Hall season, there’s The Last Night of the Proms! Join us for the world’s biggest classical music party. For one night only, it’s “Rule, Britannia” from the Royal Albert Hall. This year features conductor Jiří Bělohlávek, violinist Nicola Benedetti and tenor Joseph Calleja joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Chorus, as the Brits bring out the noisemakers for this serious and silly don’t-miss-it concert. Sat, 9/8 at 7pm

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Eating Local

By Mindy Todd WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and Host An avid locavore, Elspeth Hay is constantly exploring the Cape, Islands and South Coast to find out what’s growing, what’s good and what to do with it. Her Local Food Report began airing weekly on WCAI in August 2008. Elspeth wasn’t sure how long it would last. “How many times would we be able to talk about local blueberries or zucchini?” she wondered. Many, as it turns out. “The local food movement on the Cape is gaining steam steadily,” Elspeth says, “and there’s always something new going on, whether it’s a new farmer growing a new variety, or someone advocating a traditional way of fishing.” There are a lot of people who share Elspeth’s passion for local food, and she hopes she can spark the interest of those who might not yet see the benefits. “I like to think that, in its own small way, The Local Food Report is helping to encourage people who are thinking about jumping into the movement,” she says. “There’s plenty of room for growth, and we all have

a lot to learn when it comes to feeding our community. I learn something every time I go out and do an interview—it is very rewarding work.” Whether foraging for mushrooms, exploring a traditional method of fermenting pickles, or checking out a Brazilian sweet called the brigadeiro, Elspeth is on the hunt for what we are growing, raising and savoring. She gets some of her ideas from listeners and is always open to suggestions. An added benefit of the report has been the discovery of all sorts of people and their passions. “Like the quail-raising dentist, or the woman who raises 150 varieties of tomatoes!” Elspeth says. “There are surprising stories, like the new landowner who discovers and nurtures a failing orchard that was an unfulfilled dream of its prior owner, who’d died suddenly. The Local Food Report isn’t just about food: it’s about life.”

Sustainability It is a term that relates to the sensible use of natural resources and to the industries that bring an enduring sense of well being to people, and to the communities in which they live and work. A particularly good example of this can be found among the wool gatherers, weavers, and dyers who provide handmade rugs for Dover Rug & Home. We support the fair trade organizations that enable these artisans to maintain and improve their livelihoods. Genuine craft, sustainable value... Fair trade for the people who make our rugs, fair pricing, and a lifetime guarantee of quality – we think it’s a model that works.
