This month, 16 years after his groundbreaking PBS series Baseball, filmmaker Ken Burns and co-producer Lynn Novick revisit America’s favorite pastime. Ken concluded his original series with a prediction that the Red Sox would never take home the ultimate prize. Lynn challenged him, and he responded, “Look, if they ever win, I’ll make a new series and call it The Tenth Inning.” Happily for all of us, including Ken—who is a longtime Red Sox fan and WGBH friend—there’s lots of new baseball history to cover since 1994 (see The Tenth Inning, page 18). “Like the original series,” Ken says, “this film pays tribute to one of our nation’s greatest institutions. We celebrate tremendous athletic achievements and examine the humanity and diversity of the players, the dynamic relationship with the fans, and all the layers and nuances that make a seemingly simple exercise of hitting a ball with a stick infinitely fascinating.” Creating a home for the best documentary films in America, and a vibrant space where audiences can experience and participate in nonfiction media, is one of WGBH’s core missions. That’s why we’ve teamed up with New York-based WNET.org and American Public Television to launch a re-imagined, expanded World service, on-air (see pgs. 4–7 for tune-in info) and online (worldcompass.org). Now, in addition to offering Nova, Frontline and American Experience films along with other public broadcasting news and public affairs favorites, World is showcasing content from up-and-coming independent filmmakers and video bloggers. We’re also organizing our presentations around mindexpanding themes, like this month’s “Do It Yourself,” which looks at everything from the surge of DIY endeavors among Generation X-ers to amusing tales of things that you should not try on your own (case in point: hypnosis). And soon, we’ll be spotlighting submissions from World viewers and Web users… from you. Our hope is that World will be an incubator for new ideas and new voices, and the go-to place for learning more about our world. A new series from Ken Burns and a new World—all that and more thanks to your generous membership support!

The Cat’s Meow
Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s Cat from The Cat in the Hat series guides friends Sally and Nick—with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2—on fun-filled expeditions where they make natural-science discoveries such as learning how bees make honey or why owls sleep during the day. Filled with both adventure and silliness, the program is based on the acclaimed The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library book series, and appeals to preschoolers’ natural curiosity. The Curse Reversed!
Thousands of bats, three home run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series Baseball. Now, Burns and co-director Lynn Novick update the series with The Tenth Inning. Beginning with a crippling strike that alienated millions of fans and brought the game to the brink, this new film moves the tumultuous story of our national pastime up to the present. It celebrates baseball’s new Golden Age—an era of unprecedented home run totals, popularity and prosperity—and sheds light on one of the game’s darkest chapters, the steroid era. The two-part, four-hour film examines the compelling stories of the 2004 Red Sox, Joe Torre, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Barry Bonds and features commentary from an eclectic lineup of writers, broadcasters, fans and all-stars. Play ball! Ken Burns’s The Tenth Inning Tue, 9/28 at 8pm and 10pm on WGBH 2 Wed, 9/29 at 8pm and 10:30pm on WGBH 2

Radio Spotlight In Tune with Laurence Lesser Master cellist Laurence Lesser will perform with world-renowned pianist HaeSun Paik in WGBH’s studios in late September (see page 27). Lesser has had an impressive career as a concert cellist, teacher and administrator. He won top prize in the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and has been a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the New Japan Philharmonic, among many others. President of New England Conservatory (NEC) from 1983 to 1996, Lesser currently teaches at NEC and counts among his students hundreds of cellists at elite symphonies, orchestras and string quartets in New England and around the country. WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel recently chatted with the cellist about being a musician and a teacher.
Q A
What drew you to the cello?
When I was four or five, my parents took me to symphony concerts, and though I don’t remember this, I wanted to play the double bass. My parents said that was too big for a little boy, but on my sixth birthday they got me a cello. And I didn’t complain.
Q A
Tell me about your cello.
I have a 1622 cello made by Antonio and Hieronymous Amati in Cremona, Italy. Their family started making instruments in the 1500s—
the beginning of the “golden age” of instrument making— and it was Heironymous’s son, Nicolo, who is believed to have taught Antonio Stradivari. I bought the cello in London in 1972 and it has always felt to me like the right instrument. It has a very rich golden sound and the bottom is extremely robust. I’ve had it for 38 years, and I know at some point it will be somebody else’s. We can’t really say we own these instruments, but rather it feels like we’re the caretakers of them for a time.
Q A
How did you decide to become a professional musician? My father always told me to do what you love in life because you’ll have a better life. At Harvard, I studied mathematics, and I quickly found that there were a lot of students who were more gifted than I. But in music, I felt more uniquely qualified. I came to the conclusion that I would just have to take my chances. It hasn’t turned out too badly.
Q A
How did you start teaching?
I started teaching as a teenager. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I enjoyed it, and I guess I did a good job since a friend I taught—now a
psychiatrist—still plays in an amateur string quartet! Teaching is part of my nature.
Q A
What’s your philosophy of teaching? I’m famous for telling students on the first day that my ambition is to get rid of them. They sometimes are confused by that, because they think I don’t want them, but that’s not what I mean. I want them to get to the point where they don’t need me as a teacher, that they can be their own teachers. That’s really what the goal is. I’m not a by-the-book kind of teacher. I’m always trying to figure out what my students need to help them grow. I am constantly re-inventing what I do and how I do it. Each student is different, and I change what I do depending on what their characters are, what their needs are. I don’t think that every teacher is right for every student. So I’m humble about that. But when it works well, it feels really good.
Q A
What do you listen to in your free time? I love to listen to silence. I need the white page on which to put the black dot. I also do listen to 99.5 All Classical, and really appreciate WGBH as a classical music leader in our area.

New on WCAI: Climatide
At the end of August, nPr’s Argo Project, a new national journalism project to develop in-depth, local coverage on topics critical to communities and the nation, goes live online. We’re proud to announce that WCAi, WGBH’s Cape and islands nPr station, was selected as one of 12 pilot nPr stations that will curate and distribute online content about high-interest, specialized subjects. in the case of WCAi, the topic of interest is oceans and global climate change, and the reporter chosen to lead the effort after a nationwide search is WCAi’s own science reporter/editor Heather Goldstone, who has a Phd in marine biology from mit and Woods Hole Oceanographic institution. Why was the Cape chosen as the local news epicenter for global climate change? Cape Cod feels the effects of global climate change perhaps more than any other geographic area in the continental Us. rising ocean temperatures threaten lucrative commercial fish stocks, while rising sea level and storm activity have led to unprecendented coastal erosion. the Cape also is the center of much of the world’s groundbreaking scientific research into how global climate change is affecting the marine environment. Goldstone’s task for Argo is to write and curate a daily blog on the WCAi website that will provide original reporting on all matters involving the ocean and climate change—from the very latest on the mammoth BP oil spill to what’s going on miles below the ocean surface. Goldstone also is tasked with creating a one-stop online resource on global climate change. Check the blog at capeandislands.org.

Off the Mic
By Laura Carlo, 99.5 All Classical Host I’ve always loved the electricity around September and the back-toschool season. If I close my eyes, I can remember the rush of getting new shoes, new erasers, new loose-leaf binder paper. When I walk down memory lane, I also indulge in a few moments of silent gratitude for having had the most wonderful teachers, from dear Mrs. Floyd in kindergarten through college and beyond. To be sure, I did have some tough, even humorless teachers, but regardless of their style, I learned something from every one of them. I remember the free-spirited (ok, hippie) instructor who spent a two-hour class on just one sentence in Dubliners, to discuss why James Joyce used the word “but” instead of “and.” Two hours. I had a piano teacher who I swear was super-glued to her metronome (“Once one gets the timing right the rest falls into place”). Isn’t that the truth? I had a World Religions professor, one of the world’s leading authorities, who wore disco chains and dangerously-high platform shoes. He was a Jesuit. He had us mesmerized. What powerful gifts they and others gave me—to demand I be the best I could be; to fully appreciate the contributions of others; and to celebrate “different.” The most important gift of all, though, was nurturing my innate love for learning. To be given permission to fly was so freeing. I still take that love of learning into my every day. As a tribute to those who, as Christa McAuliffe said, “…touch the future,” we’re launching “Teachers and Mentors Month” in September. Each day, I’ll be playing a work by a composer-teacher/ mentor, and then one of his student’s works. Haydn to Mozart, Brahms to Dvořak to Suk, the list is endless. I also invite you to check out our on-air live performances: All month we’ll feature amazing musicians including cellist Laurence Lesser (see page 23) and flutist Fenwick Smith, who also are amazing teachers. Finally, we’re so looking forward to hearing about the teacher who meant the most to you. As a long-time collector of quotes, I’ve always thought Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis said it best: “Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross…and then encourage them to create bridges of their own.” Please join us as we honor those who taught and those who teach. If you’re a teacher, keep on shining your light. You’re appreciated. Share your teacher/mentor stories at 995allclassical.org. Tune in to hear Laura Carlo weekday mornings, from 5am–9am on 99.5 All Classical. 26 Schedules, program info, playlists: 995allclassical.org
