One of the exciting things for me about the recent expansion of WGBH’s radio services is that we now have the opportunity to bring listeners stories that provide real context for the issues facing Boston and New England. The centerpiece of our new lineup on 89.7 WGBH, Boston’s NPR Station for News and Culture, is two midday hours featuring award-winning journalists Emily Rooney and Callie Crossley, back to back from 12noon to 2pm (see page 26). Both bring extraordinary skills, experience and perspective to their new gigs. And both are living proof of the wisdom that if you want something done, give it to a busy person. You know Emily as the host and executive editor of WGBH’s Greater Boston, widely considered the public affairs program of record for our region. Emily has done it all: she worked for WCVB-TV here in Boston for 15 years before going on to be the executive producer of ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, and later, head of the Fox Network’s national political coverage. We lured her back to Boston in 1997 to create and launch Greater Boston and its popular weekly media watch, Beat the Press. Callie brings a wealth of experience to the radio studio. Emily’s longtime Beat the Press colleague is a regular panelist on our TV series Basic Black and program manager for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. She’s also a former producer for ABC’s 20/20, and a documentary filmmaker whose work on the landmark Blackside, Inc. civil rights series Eyes on the Prize earned an Academy Award nomination. As we roll out our new radio lineup on 89.7 WGBH and 99.5 All Classical, some of you have asked why WGBH is expanding our news service when Boston listeners are fortunate to have WBUR. As 89.7 evolves, I hope you’ll find that having a choice of vibrant public radio resources enriches the life of our community—just as we’re richer for being a “two-newspaper town.” I also hope we bring the same choice and convenience to your listening that our menu of WGBH TV channels (listed to the right) delivers. And speaking of “more,” that’s also what we’re delivering to our region’s classical music fans—starting with an enhanced schedule of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s many offerings, including Saturday evening concerts and specials 52 weeks of the year, all 25 Tanglewood concerts throughout the summer, and the entire Boston Pops spring season. More news. More classical. More of the distinctive content that you expect and deserve from WGBH…thanks to your generous support!

Lost City of the Incas Perched atop a mountain crest, mysteriously abandoned more than four centuries ago, Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological ruin in the western hemisphere and an iconic symbol of the power and engineering prowess of the Incas. In the years since Machu Picchu was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, there have been countless theories about this “Lost City of the Incas,” yet it remains an enigma. Nova joins a new generation of archeologists as they probe areas of Machu Picchu that haven’t been touched since the time of the Incas. Nova/Ghosts of Machu Picchu Tue, 2/2 at 8pm on WGBH 2/HD

Across the Divide On September 1, 1939—the first day of World War II in Europe— President Franklin D. Roosevelt appealed to the warring nations to “under no circumstances undertake the bombardment from the air of civilian populations.” Just six years later, British and American Allied forces carried out a bombing campaign of unprecedented might over Germany’s cities, claiming the lives of nearly half a million civilians. This film examines the defining moments of the offensive that led the US across a moral divide, weaving interviews with WWII pilots and historians with stunning archival footage of the bombing and its aftermath. After the Car Is it time to fundamentally change the way Detroiters—and by extension all Americans—get around? Detroit is the crucible in which the nation’s ability to move toward a modern transportation infrastructure is put to the test. Before it was dubbed the Motor City, Detroit was home to the nation’s most extensive streetcar system. In fact, it was the vast network of streetcars that carried workers to the area’s many car factories. And it was the cars made in those factories that would soon displace the streetcars in Detroit—and in every major American city. Blueprint America/ Beyond the Motor City Mon, 2/8 at 10pm on WGBH 2/HD

Fear of Flying One year after the deadliest domestic airline accident in seven years, Frontline investigates the crash of Continental 3407 and discovers a dramatically changed airline industry, where small regional carriers now account for half of the nation’s daily departures. The rise of the regionals and arrival of low-cost carriers like Southwest have been a huge boon to consumers and the industry insists that the skies remain safe. But many insiders are worried that now, 30 years after deregulation, the aviation system is being stretched beyond its capacity to deliver service that is both cheap and safe. As the world warms, the threat from rising sea levels poses an alarming potential for disaster. Some models now project a onemeter sea level rise over the next century, which could displace millions of people, from Florida to Bangladesh, and require trillions of dollars’ investment in coastal infrastructure. But these models don’t reflect recent findings that glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at an ever faster rate. Snakes on a Plain Florida’s Everglades National Park is one of the last great wildlife refuges in the United States, home to numerous unique and endangered mammals, trees, plants, birds and turtles, as well as half a million alligators. The Everglades also is the dumping ground for many animal invaders—more than 15 species of parrot, 75 kinds of fish and 30 different reptiles—from places as far away as Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Add to the mix tens of thousands of pythons that can grow to 20 feet and weigh nearly 300 pounds, some released into the wild by irresponsible pet owners, some escapees from almost 200 wildlife facilities destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The predatory pythons slithered into this protected wilderness and thrived, and the refuge has consequently become less a haven than a killing ground every day since then. Lioness of Literature Writer, cultural anthropologist, chronicler of folk roots and ethnic traditions, daughter of a former slave, Zora Neale Hurston (portrayed by Kim Brockington) was one of the most celebrated— and most controversial—figures of the Harlem Renaissance. She attained success in all areas, but her words and her conclusions often were mired in contention: she was called everything from flamboyant to outrageous, unpredictable to bodacious. She collaborated with Langston Hughes, was criticized by Richard Wright and ultimately died a pauper’s death in total obscurity. Now considered a lioness of African American literature, she was resurrected by Alice Walker; such works as Dust Tracks on a Road and Their Eyes Were Watching God are essential reading today. S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order) narrates the program. American Masters/Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun Mon, 2/22 at 10pm on WGBH 2/HD 44 The Civil War Simply Murder/The Universe of Battle. The nightmarish Union disaster at Fredericksburg comes to two climaxes that spring: at Chancellorsville in May, where Lee wins his most brilliant victory but loses Stonewall Jackson; and at Vicksburg, where Grant’s attempts to take the city by siege are stopped. There was fierce Northern opposition to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the miseries of regimental life and the increas-
ing desperation of the Confederate homefront. Lee decides to invade the North again to draw Grant’s forces away from Vicksburg. Radio Spotlight Rooney and Crossley, Back to Back Award-winning journalists Emily Rooney and Callie Crossley began hosting two new, hourlong weekday programs on 89.7 WGBH last month, focusing on local and regional issues. With their considerable skills, experience and perspective, Rooney and Crossley are expanding the range of news and information options available to the New England radio audience at a time when highquality independent journalism is becoming more and more of a rarity. And they’re having a great time doing it. With a few weeks of radio hosting under their belts, Rooney and Crossley talked with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about their hopes for the new programs, the transition from television, and how their shows fit into the ever-changing media landscape.
Q
Tell me about your new radio shows.
Emily Rooney: The Emily Rooney Show focuses on what’s happening today that affects the greater New England area—everything from politics to crime to technology to the weather. I have a large cadre of contributors I discuss the issues of the day with, and we step into areas that are both national and international. But we always turn it back to a local focus. Callie Crossley: The Callie Crossley Show follows Emily’s, and while Emily’s show looks at the news of the day, my show has a broader “these days” focus. The day’s news may be a kernel of the larger story, or it may not. We sometimes talk about wines or libraries or what the latest water cooler buzz is. This is a great opportunity to use the tremendous resources we have here in Boston, and to provide another way for people to expand their knowledge in an interesting way.
Q
What do you like about hosting radio, as opposed to TV? ER: Before this show, I had done some guest hosting for other people, but I had never done it every day and I never had my own show. Radio is a much warmer medium. I feel freer to speak my mind and freer to ask other people to speak their minds. Without a camera in the room, it’s a more casual atmosphere. Also, this program has more of my voice in it than anything I have done.
26 Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbh.org/listen
CC: I’ve done guest radio spots on any number of programs, and I have always enjoyed radio because you’re working very currently. And, unlike short segments on television, the hour-long format really allows for exploring issues and for thoughtful listening. I do call-in segments, and I find that radio allows people to not just react right out of the box, but have the opportunity to consider their feelings on a topic. And their feelings may change by the end of the hour.
Q
What are your hopes for your shows?
ER: I’m hoping that people like it! Before 99.5 All Classical joined the WGBH family, WGBH Radio tried to please a lot of people with different formats. This is a 100,000-watt station, a powerful signal! There is so much potential here. In our listening area, there already is some talk at noon, of course—but this is a different kind of talk. I hope people drift to it, and I hope they like it. That’s a small hope for the beginning. CC: For many people, I’m a new voice, and I personally am always in favor of new voices—even if in this case, it’s mine! I hope that by being a new voice myself, I will be able to bring other voices that are not often heard on the air into the space, and I hope that we will be able to provide topics that are both interesting and illuminating. My goal is really to explore topics with a variety of voices
and viewpoints, and leave people with a lot to think about.
Q
How do your shows fit into the existing talk radio shows already on the air? ER: I’m a huge news and information consumer, and I never can have enough sources to get my news. WBUR, WBZ and WTKK are all well-oiled and tough news operations, and we don’t intend to try to do what they already do very well. What we are doing is complementary to what they offer— we are not a news operation. We are reactive. That’s what we specialize in on Greater Boston and Beat the Press, and that’s what we are continuing to do with these programs. CC: With these programs, WGBH isn’t looking for a slice of the existing pie. We want to make the pie bigger. People always are looking for interesting discussions. They flip through stations ’til they find something that catches their ear. When they land on 89.7 WGBH, we want to them to be captivated, and to come back for more. And with our local focus, we’re providing something unique for this audience. Tune in The Emily Rooney Show at 12noon and The Callie Crossley Show at 1pm on 89.7 WGBH, Boston’s NPR Station for News and Culture. Listen online at wgbh.org/listen.

Their performances have been described as “luminous,”“searing,” (The New York Times) “soulful,” “biting,” and possessing a “potent collective force” (Strings magazine). Host Cathy Fuller welcomes the Chiara to our own beautiful “chamber,” the Fraser Performance Studio, where they’ll play music by Beethoven and others. Reserve your spot at wgbh.org/circleevents.
