“Love him or not, Bill Clinton is a remarkable political figure,” says WGBH’s Mark Samels, executive producer for American Experience and the guiding force behind The Presidents, our award-winning collection of presidential biographies. this month, we’re proud to premiere the latest addition to this collection: Clinton (see page 15). “enough dust has settled on the Clinton presidency for us to look back and ask, ‘How did it come about? How did he get there? And what happened while he was there?’ ” mark explains. the film goes deeper than what you think you know or remember about our 42nd president, taking you behind the scenes to offer fresh insights about both the man and his presidency. “As with all our presidential biographies, the story of Clinton is told by those around him, who knew him best,” says mark. “We had extraordinary access to everyone—from the folks who grew up with him in Arkansas and were part of his political life as governor, to the people in his cabinet and inner circle in the White House.” the result is a stunning, 360-degree portrait of one of the most talented, flawed and fascinating politicians in American history. the film also provides context for where we are as a nation today. “so much of our political landscape right now—everything from the debate over health care to the role of the military, to surpluses, to debt and jobs, to the rivalries between the two political parties—was part of Bill Clinton’s presidency as well,” mark says. “We hope our film offers viewers perspective on how some of the issues that feel so intractable today actually are part of what America is…part of what America has been from the very beginning.” Looking to the past to shed light on the present always has been key to WGBH’s mission. thanks to your generous support, WGBH is making history every day.

Celebrating Black History this year, WGBH celebrates Black History month with a slate of programs profiling the rich history, culture and contributions of African Americans. explore!

Underground Railroad: The William Still Story extraordinary people risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape via the clandestine Underground railroad. One of them was William Still of Philadelphia, a free black man who accepted delivery of transported crates containing “human cargo.” this documentary reveals some of the dramatic, lesser-known stories behind this humanitarian enterprise, and explores key Canadian connections, including the surprising fate of former slaves who crossed the border to “Freedom’s Land.” Mon, 2/6 at 10pm on WGBH 2

American Experience/Freedom Riders From may until november 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans joined together in courageous acts of civil disobedience, riding buses into the deep south in dangerous defiance of Jim Crow laws. Freedom Riders, an emmyAward-winning film produced by WGBH’s American Experience, revisits this pivotal moment in our civil rights history. Tue, 2/7 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Slavery by Another Name explore the little-known story of the post-emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the south that persisted well into the 20th century. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by The Wall Street Journal’s douglas A. Blackmon, the film also examines the concept of “neoslavery,” which sentenced African Americans to forced labor for violating an array of laws that criminalized their everyday behavior. Mon, 2/13 at 9pm on WGBH 2

More Online at Forum Network more than 150 audio and video lectures are available at wgbh.org/forum featuring African American perspectives on history, politics, arts, literature and more. shown: Judy Richardson, civil rights activist and filmmaker.

American Masters/ Cab Calloway Minnie the Moocher, with its popular refrain “Hi de hi de hi de ho,” was Cab Calloway’s signature song, and Harlem’s famous Cotton Club was his home stage. He charmed audiences around the world with boundless energy, bravado and elegant showmanship. this lively biography captures the life and music of an exceptional figure in the history of jazz. in an effort to outwit raccoons, are human beings actually making them smarter and unwittingly contributing to their evolutionary success? Are the ever more complex obstacles that our fast-paced urban world throws at them actually pushing the development of raccoon brains? in Raccoon Nation, scientists from around the world share their thoughts and work to explore this scientific theory. Attempting to do something that has never been done before, they closely follow a family of urban raccoons as the animals navigate the complex landscape of a big city. Love in Memphis

Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for best new musical, Memphis turns the radio dial back to the 1950s to tell the story of a white DJ, named Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball), whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. His romantic interest is Felicia Farrell (Montego Glover), a young black singer whose career is on the rise, but who can’t break out of segregated clubs on her own. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the golden era of early rock ‘n’ roll takes flight. But as things heat up, whether the world is really ready for their music— or their love—is put to a test. Great Performances/Memphis Fri, 2/24 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Dickens’ Curiosity

This classic Dickens novel is brought to life with an all-star cast that includes legendary actor Sir Derek Jacobi 1 12/5/11 NewburyCourtTestimonial.ads_Layout (I, Claudius), Toby Jones (Infamous), Zoe Wanamaker (Gormenghast) and Gina McKee (The Foryste Saga). The film tells the tale of Little Nell Trent (newcomer Sophie Vavassuer) who lives with her doting grandfather (Jacobi) in his London store known as The Old Curiosity Shop. Little Nell is unaware that her grandfather has a ruinous gambling addiction that has left them nearly penniless and on the run from a loan shark. The pair fall in with a number of colorful characters, some villainous and some affectionate, in a tragic and heartbreaking journey. The Amish

The Amish’s intense faith and adherence to 500-year-old traditions have by turns captivated and repelled, awed and irritated, inspired and confused people for more than a century. With unprecedented access to this insular community, WGBH’s American Experience paints an intimate portrait of contemporary Amish faith and life. Why and how have the Amish, an insistently closed and communal culture, thrived within one of the most open, individualistic societies on earth? How have they successfully resisted the encroachments of modern society and government? And what does the future hold for a community whose existence is so rooted in the past? Tune in to find out. Radio Spotlight Innovation Station Boston is known around the world as a hub of ideas, tackling issues from renewable energy and infrastructure to health care and technology with innovative solutions. In October, radio host Kara Miller launched a new program, Innovation Hub, on 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio, which delves into the cool new ideas percolating in the metro-Boston area, examining how they are born and exploring what they mean for the future of our society. An assistant professor of English at the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth, where she teaches journalism, Miller’s articles have appeared in The Boston Globe, The National Journal, The Boston Herald, Boston Magazine and The International Herald Tribune, and she’s been a frequent panelist on WGBH’s Beat the Press. Miller recently chatted with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel about her new program and why radio is an ideal platform for talking about innovation.

Q A

How did the idea for Innovation Hub come about? I was guest-hosting Greater Boston and we were doing a segment on innovation, so I asked friends and people in my social network to point me in the direction of local innovators. I got an incredible number of responses, and I realized that we had something special here. I got referred to inventors of medical devices, fashion pioneers, groundbreaking patent lawyers—an amazing range. I brought the idea to Phil Redo, 89.7 WGBH’s managing director, and he felt it fit in well with the station’s priorities, so we decided to launch a show about what’s new and innovative in Boston.

Q A

Tell me about the program’s format.

The show is divided into two 30-minute segments, and each half focuses on a “big question”—it could be anything from urban education to green energy, to government. Some of the shows focus on actual physical inventions, but others are more about big ideas. Essentially, we start with a problem, such as “How can you improve urban education?” Then we look at the issues: Is the root of the problem that urban kids have nowhere to go and nothing to do in the afternoons? If that’s one of the roots, what kinds of afterschool programs really work for kids? Each show has two separate guest panels, and we aim to feature people with different experiences and points of view.

Q A

What drew you to doing this kind of program? My best qualification for hosting this program is that I’m really interested in ideas of all kinds: science, education, the economy, the arts. Having that diverse range of interests, and being fascinated by the work people are doing, is what inspired this program. I’m an idea person, like so many other NPR listeners, and I’m interested in hearing how things are going to change, and how the future is going to look before we’ve seen it.

Q A

What makes Boston a good place for innovation? Boston has great universities, which attract young people who are coming up with all kinds of ideas in technology, gaming, science, retail. And the depth of the research community and the great minds here create a perfect environment for the incubation of new ideas. When professors or students come up with ideas for start-ups, they often want to stay close to their schools, so they headquarter them here. Kendall Square recently put in a “Walk of Fame” for great innovators, a testament to the importance the community places on ideas.

Q A

Why is radio a good platform for a program like this? Radio gives you a good chunk of time. You can get into deep discussions, and the ideas and innovations we’re talking about are so interesting and appealing that they fit in a long-form radio program better than they would in the kinds of shorter, bite-sized segments that exist on commercial radio and TV.

Q A

What does it take to do a weekly hour long program like Innovation Hub? A lot of preparation. Of course, one of the biggest parts is booking the panel: getting the guests we want, getting people who can speak about what they are doing on the radio, and making sure we have a good balance of perspectives. I also have to do a lot of research and background reading so that I understand the need for innovation, and so that I can challenge the panel to address the real issues and stumbling blocks that have proven to be intractable in the past. I want to be able to draw the panelists out and hear what they have to say. Then people can judge for themselves whether they think these innovations will work.

Q A

What accounts for the enduring popularity of radio? I think there are two reasons. First, radio has that ability to allow long-form conversations. I love listening to Teri Gross [Fresh Air] when she has somebody on that I’m interested in hearing. I want to hear them at length. And second, you can’t watch television in your car or when you’re doing something else, like cooking. But if you’re getting dinner ready, let’s say, your body is occupied, but your brain is listening to the radio. Also, I sometimes like the fact that you don’t see people. It allows you to get beyond what people look like, and to focus on what they’re saying instead of whether their haircut is any good, what they’re wearing and other distractions.

Q A

How did you first connect to WGBH?

I grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts, so my connection to WGBH probably goes back to when I was five years old watching Sesame Street and other kids’ programs. I also liked Julia Child. I remember once, when I was eight, my mom had to take something to a party, so I wrote down a Julia Child recipe for a chocolate cake, writing as fast as I could to keep up with what she was saying. It turned out really well, and since my mom did not normally bake, we were all impressed. My favorite program on television now is Charlie Rose. He’s an idea person, too, and one of the people who inspired me to become a journalist. That’s really the best of what WGBH does: inspire people. And I hope that’s one of the things Innovation Hub will accomplish. Tune in Innovation Hub Saturdays at 7am and Sundays at 10pm on 89.7 WGBH, or listen online anytime at wgbh.org/radio.

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio WGBH Archives Bring Depth to Today’s Life Science Stories By Phil Redo Managing Director, 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio

Almost five years ago, during a speech at the BIO 2007 conference, Governor Deval Patrick announced the Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative: a $1 billion investment package (over 10 years) to enhance and strengthen the state’s already internationally recognized leadership in the field. Life sciences is one of WGBH Radio’s editorial areas of concentration, and last fall listeners to WGBH’s Morning Edition heard an intriguing story reported by host Bob Seay. A young metabolic engineer, Jake Wintermute, and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School think they may have unlocked some important secrets about LSD, the notorious and illegal drug promoted in the 1960s by doctor/guru Timothy Leary. For more than 40 years, LSD and its close chemical relative, lysergic acid, have basically been under lock and key as controlled substances, and strictly regulated by both federal and state laws. Wintermute, who recently earned a PhD from Harvard Medical School in the Department of Systems Biology, has been researching pathways to new drugs these long-blacklisted compounds might yield. His interest is in lysergic acid, which can be made both cheaply and quickly using new bioengineering methods. The actual mechanism by which the compound works is still somewhat mysterious, Wintermute admitted, but said it has something to do with it

acting as a vasodilator: “It sort of opens up the blood vessels of the brain, improves the circulation in the brain; the sort of enhanced clarity that people on these drugs can sometimes benefit from comes from that.” While the technology is obviously critical, so is curiosity and, in this case, a dose of courage. “There are a lot of exciting new drugs that are being developed thanks to these new bioengineering technologies,” Wintermute told WGBH. “And no one yet has taken up lysergic acid as a kind of promising new precursor, and I think a lot of that is because there is this kind of stigma, taboo, when you are working on something that is so illegal or so close to illegal.” The potential benefits of such a new drug? Easing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, a therapy for migraines and treatment for elder dementia. Drawing from materials in WGBH’s archives, Seay’s radio piece featured the opinions of the late Dr. Leary, who could be heard debating the benefits of LSD with Jerome Lettvin, an MIT professor, psychiatrist and cognitive scientist. Their exchange was lifted from a program that aired on WGBH television back in 1967. Far out!

The World’s Geo Quiz

Where in the World Is…

Test your grasp of geography with The World’s Geo Quiz: This tiny resort town (pictured) in southeastern Europe stands out as one of the southernmost towns in Montenegro. It sits 75 miles south of Dubrovnik and has a fabulous view of the Adriatic Sea. The waves on the beaches attract lots of Albanian, German, Italian and eastern European tourists. It’s not as well known as other spots on the Adriatic, such as Dubrovnik and Budva, but it does have a fascinating history: the seaport that was at one time a haven for pirates also has a black community that dates back centuries. Where is this melting pot on the Adriatic? Find the answer on the bottom of page 24 or online with the accompanying story on the town at https://bitly.com/TW_pirate

Host Brian O’Donovan explores a brand-new CD, Songs of the Scribe, by Pádraigín Ni Uallacháin, a Northern Ireland singer who has specialized over the years in Gaelic language and children’s songs. Sat, 2/18 at 3pm Arts & Ideas

Classical New England

Watch Your Radio! By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services

In 1981, MTV famously went on the air with a quirky (and seemingly prophetic) hit by The Buggles called “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Today, more than 30 years later, radio is as strong as ever and video is about the last thing you ever see on MTV. But adding video images to the great sounds you hear on the radio might just be the salvation for emerging classical musicians. To be sure, WGBH has forged a worldwide reputation for excellence during its six decades of television production. But in recent months, we at Classical New England have been breaking new ground in the comparatively uncharted territory of short-form classical video production, seeking to capture the artistry, immediacy and visceral energy of live performances in our Fraser Performance Studio not only in sound, but also in images. And what sights we’ve seen…and shared! Every artist and/or ensemble that appears on our signature Drive Time Live series on Friday afternoons is also getting its performance recorded in state-of-the-art HD video. You can see the results not only on our Classical New England website, but also on our new channels on the video-sharing sites Vimeo and YouTube, making it the latest WGBH venture to be “Produced in Boston, shared with the world.” And the world is answering back! Watching the brilliant Ina Zdorovetchi perform her own arrangement of a Scott Joplin piece on the harp (a Classical New England commission), one YouTube viewer wrote, “This artist performs as if she LOVES ragtime! This brings ragtime to a whole new realm!” The Muir Quartet’s in-studio performance of a Beethoven string quartet drew raves from Zurich, Switzerland. And despite the newness of the venture, the sheer variety of performers, genres and repertoires is impressive. We’ve already been able to share with the online world the artistry of tenor

William Hite performing fresh arrangements of Beethoven’s little-known folk songs from the British Isles (that's right: Beethoven in English!), as well as Berklee College of Music student Mike Bono performing one of his original compositions during our special 9/11 commemorative broadcast. The videos are largely the handiwork of videographer and WGBH documentary producer Greg Shea. Greg, the producer of the acclaimed A Simple Act short film, has brought his considerable film-production skills to the new arena of classical music. And it’s been an eye opener, says Greg. “What I’ve noticed most filming these world-class musicians up close is how physically demanding it is to maintain such a high level of skill and concentration. It’s like having a front-row seat to watching a professional athlete in action.” Your front-row seat is now only a click away. So when you hear one of our Classical New England hosts say “Watch your radio,” it’s no mistake! See and hear the Classical New England performances mentioned in this article at classicalnewengland.org, or the WGBH/Classical New England Channels on vimeo.com or YouTube.com.

BSO: Fresh Starts and Long-Held Celebrations By Brian McCreath Classical New England Announcer/Producer

In this time of rapidly shifting landscapes in both radio and music, one constant is the six-decade-and-counting relationship between WGBH and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The BSO, following a very public separation from conductor James Levine, now is in the much less visible phase of finding his replacement as music director. Classical New England has covered this story from the very beginning with timely updates and conversations, and we’ll continue to bring you developments as they happen. As the music director search picks up steam, the BSO carries on, recently completing a tour to the West Coast, during which Mark Swed of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “The winds…were extraordinary. The suave strings were more French than the French. The Boston brass presented a magical power of boldness in containment.” Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle felt “the orchestra left no doubt that it remains one of the premier American ensembles.” Looking forward, the orchestra has planned a stunning Pops season, highlighted by comedic actor and musician Steve Martin, and

a celebratory 75th-anniversary season at Tangle-wood. Along the way, Classical New England is proud to continue bringing you this musical treasure, not just of Boston, but of the entire music world. With Classical New England’s expansion into Rhode Island, we’re excited to bring more listeners to the BSO broadcast family: now stations in Vermont, Maine, upstate New York, and Connecticut will offer WGBH’s BSO broadcasts. That’s in addition to the ways we’ve expanded beyond our Saturday night live BSO broadcasts from Symphony Hall (themselves a rarity in the radio world) by repeating broadcasts on Sunday afternoons and offering on-demand access to each concert for two weeks at classicalnewengland.org. It’s 60 years and counting for WGBH and the BSO, and with all of the above, you might think of that old adage “the only constant is change.” We’re thrilled to bring you both constancy and change!

Ports of Call: Musical Destinations

By Cheryl Willoughby Classical New England Music Director

It’s the time of year when many folks dream of being far, far away from the winter doldrums of slushy sidewalks, dead batteries and bulky overcoats stained with road salt. For some, it may be planning that trip to Spring Training, or perhaps to Disney World. Others may be thumbing through brochures promising more exotic locales. Alas, for the rest, those dreams of faraway destinations remain just that: fantasies. But all this month, you’ll get to be an “armchair traveler” to some of the world’s most glamorous, colorful and downright mysterious locales…from the Hebrides Overture to the Steppes of Central Asia. Every weekday, hosts Laura Carlo, Alan McLellan, Cathy Fuller and James David Jacobs will be your tour guides for “Ports of Call”—our month-long survey of works by great composers who transformed their cabin fever into inspired musical creations. It all starts February 1 at 9am, when Laura plays one of the most famous of all musical travelogues: Jacques Ibert’s Escales, or “Ports of Call.” The French composer’s evocation composition, dating from 1922, retraces a cruise around the Mediterranean, with a noisy stop in Rome, an eerie visit to Tunis on the North African coast and a whirling Spanish dance scene in Valencia to wind it all up. Find the complete schedule, including Alan’s choice European destinations middays on Café Europa, at classicalnewengland.org. So sit back, relax and let Classical New England be your passport to the world! Schedules, program info, playlists: classicalnewengland.org 27
