When WGBH’s Masterpiece introduced a 21st-century sherlock Holmes in 2010, audiences and critics couldn’t get enough. The Washington Post called Sherlock “absorbedly witty and brisk.” The Wall Street Journal described it as “wonderfully weird.” this month, the game is on again with Sherlock, series 2 (page 11), three new episodes from creators steven moffat and mark Gatiss, superbly acted by Benedict Cumberbatch and martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson. “One of the things people loved about series 1 was the relationship between sherlock and Watson,” says WGBH’s Susanne Simpson, Masterpiece senior producer. “in series 2, that relationship gets even funnier and more interesting. it also gets seriously complicated by the brilliant, crafty irene Adler, played by Lara Pulver.” the stories are very loosely based on Conan doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, susanne explains. “the first is A Scandal in Belgravia, which is a distant relation of doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia. the film’s writers liken themselves to ‘magpies,’ taking shiny bits from all the sherlock Holmes stories, and putting them into the series.” Creating an edgy, contemporary Sherlock set in today’s London made perfect sense, explains moffat: “Conan doyle’s stories were never about frock coats and gas light. they’re about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes. Other detectives have cases. sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that’s what matters.” And now we’re giving you more ways than ever to experience your favorite mysteries. Join the more than 130,000 Facebook fans who are following Masterpiece (facebook.com/masterpiecepbs) to keep up with sherlock’s adventures. And you can watch Masterpiece’s Sherlock online after each broadcast premiere on wgbh.org. Sherlock marks the start of another great season of Masterpiece mysteries. “Look for Endeavour, the much-anticipated prequel to our popular Inspector Morse series,” says susanne, “along with new episodes of both Inspector Lewis and Wallander.” How does susanne account for Masterpiece’s impressive string of literature-based, award-winning mysteries, year after year? “it’s elementary,” she responds slyly. “We couldn’t do it without the generous annual support of WGBH members!”

When people think of Yo-Yo Ma, they think classical music. But the world-renowned, Boston-based cellist isn’t constrained by genres. Last year, ma brought together mandolinist Chris Thile, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and bassist Edgar Meyer—each a prominent figure in his own musical sphere—to create an imaginative blend of musical styles they call The Goat Rodeo Sessions, an album that earned a Grammy nomination.

Fasten Your Seatbelt: Goat Rodeo Live Takes Off

this past January the quartet, joined by folk singer Aoife O’Donovan (daughter of 89.7 WGBH A Celtic Sojourn host Brian O’donovan), performed at Boston’s House of Blues, and WGBH was there to capture every note. this month WGBH is proud to premiere that sold-out concert: Goat Rodeo Live. so what exactly is a goat rodeo and what is goat rodeo music? WGBH’s Laurie donnelly, executive producer for the prime-time PBs special, describes it this way: “Goat rodeo is a term used in aviation circles for a scenario that requires about a 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away alive. in terms of music, it’s this wonderful mix of orchestration and improvisation. People label it as a fusion of classical and bluegrass, but Yo-Yo calls it is ‘genre-less,’ and it really is. it’s four string virtuosos and four very different worlds of music coming together. Add the exquisite voice of Aoife O’donovan, and there was magic in the room the night of the concert.” WGBH also had to manage its own goat rodeo. We not only recorded the concert for PBs and a sony dvd, but also worked on a live feed to more than 400 movie theaters nationwide. “this was an unprecedented collaboration with a great group of partners: Celebrity series of Boston, sony Classical, sound Postings, nCm Fathom, and the House of Blues Boston,” Laurie says. “now we’re thrilled to present it to viewers across the country and here at home.” Goat Rodeo Live More on Yo Yo Ma Fri, 5/25 at 9pm on WGBH 2 on page 24. Jesse Owens
WGBH’s American Experience tells the story of Jesse Owens, the son of a sharecropper who toppled Adolf Hitler’s plans to showcase the Aryan ideal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The film examines the pressures on the 22-year-old athlete to attend the event, reveals the unlikely relationship he struck up at the games with his German rival, Carl “Luz” Long, and shows how Owens struggled to find a place for himself back home in a nation still wrestling with its own deeply entrenched racism. “a savvy, sassy, and eminently likable, breakthrough musical.” – New York Times
The Queen of England has three official residences: the best known, Buckingham Palace; the oldest, Windsor Castle; and the most romantic, the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Each has its own distinctive story—long histories that reflect good and bad times, triumph and tragedy and, of course, the lives of some of the world’s most memorable kings and queens. Presented by Fiona Bruce, The Queen’s Palaces showcases the art and architecture, interior decoration and treasures stored inside these fabulous buildings, and reveals the surprising and fascinating stories behind them. Leave it to WGBH.
Jean and Larry did.
“ As a kid growing up in Boston, I always loved
watching WGBH programs with my family, especially Masterpiece. Now that I have a family of my own, Larry and I have Masterpiece memories with each of our children. By putting Masterpiece in our will, we have shown the children that you must give something back to the world, because it belongs to them, too. And now they get an extra thrill when Sunday night rolls around. WGBH makes me proud to say I’m from Boston.

Radio Spotlight Concierto Sounds an Inclusive Note Before Classical New England’s managing director Ben Roe arrived at WGBH in early 2011, he served as general manager of WDAV Classical Public Radio in Davidson, North Carolina. There, he collaborated with program director Frank Dominguez on Concierto, America’s first nationally distributed bilingual (Spanish-English) classical music program. With Dominguez as host, Concierto launched in the fall of 2010 and now is carried on 16 stations around the country, including Classical New England (Fridays, 9pm). WGBH’s Matt Roy recently spoke with Dominguez about the show and its impact.
Q A
What were your reasons for creating Concierto? I give Ben Roe the credit. He had been track ing developments in classical music and observed that the only part of the audience that was growing, whether measured by concert-going or purchasing music, was the Latino demographic. He saw it as a chance to grow not only classical music listenership, but also public radio listenership in a community that historically hasn’t listened a lot to public radio. That was the opportunity and mandate he gave me.
Q A
What do listeners hear on Concierto? Concierto celebrates the rich Hispanic tradi tion in classical music, which dates back to the 18th century and continues today with Gustavo Dudamel from Venezuela, Alondra de la Parra from Mexico and many other artists. Probably half of the music on any program is by Hispanic composers, and the other half is music from European composers interpreted by Latino artists. You might hear a Verdi aria sung by Plácido Domingo or José Carreras…or Beethoven’s Fifth played by the Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra. I also share some traditional forms of music that have influenced Spanish-speaking composers. I might play a bit of Flamenco music because it had such a strong affect on the 19th-century nationalist Spanish composers.
Q A
What has the response been? It’s been very gratifying to receive feedback from both English and Spanish speakers. English speakers appreciate the inclusiveness of the program, and the new repertory and artists it exposes them to. When I hear from Spanish speakers, it’s invariably emotional. They feel grateful to be included in the classical music programming of a public radio station. They talk about how nice it is to hear their language on the radio, and express their delight at hearing composers they grew up listening to in their home countries.
Q A
In which markets is Concierto perform ing well? We get a lot of feedback from your neck of the woods. Easily half the email we get is from Boston-area listeners who are tuning in on Classical New England. We know that the audience in Houston is significant. It also has caught on in some other fairly large markets—Cleveland, Las Vegas—with significant Hispanic populations.
Q
How important is Gustavo Dudamel— probably the most recognizable young star in classical music—to the Latino community? He’s of immeasurable importance. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was absolutely onto that when they made him music director. His qualifications and brilliance speak for themselves, but he also is a perfect fit for a community as cosmopolitan and diverse as Los Angeles. A lot of Hispanics like myself were overjoyed to see him named to that post. Because it’s recognition that we’re an audience out there, too—that classical music is available for anybody who wants to listen and appreciate.
A
Q A
How did your appreciation of classical music develop? I grew up in the Bronx in New York, and my dad was a building superintendent. When people moved, he had to make sure their apartments were cleaned out. He once discovered some abandoned records—Reader’s Digest 100 Great Classics—and gave them to me. I was probably about five or six. The legend goes in my family that, even at this young age, I was attracted to music. I would sit in this little rocking chair by this old-fashioned German stereo that looked like a dresser and listen and sing along. Those records were my introduction to classical music.
“When I hear from Spanish speakers, it’s invariably emotional. They feel grateful to be included in the classical music programming of a public radio station.”

Given the flooded media marketplace, how do public radio and a program like Concierto compete? The key is to be on multiple platforms. Any radio program has to have a presence on the Internet. We have a website, concierto.org, that right now is modest, but we’re working to make it much more robust so that it becomes an allpurpose destination for people interested in the Latino contribution to classical music. We’ll also soon be launching a Concierto app that people will be able to download on their smartphone.
Q A
What are the benefits of expanding classical music’s audience? Classical music listeners are understood to be highly educated and affluent. But that doesn’t mean they started out that way. Many of them grew up in circumstances like mine. My parents were working-class folks, but they exposed me to classical music and that turned me into a classical music listener. My interest enriched my life and inspired me to pursue more education than some of my peers. It’s natural for people to grow up listening to the popular music of their time, but if they have the chance to hear other forms of music—it might be classical, or jazz or world music—it enriches their experience, refines their instincts and deepens their appreciation of other cultures. It also sharpens the mind, because you have to listen in different ways to different kinds of music. Concierto can be heard Fridays at 9pm on Classical New England and on classicalnewengland.org.

Classical New England Musicians at Play: Yo-Yo Ma and Goat Rodeo Live By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services “Let’s do something together.”
The late violin great Isaac Stern said that to a teenaged cellist named Yo-Yo Ma at Vermont’s Marlboro Festival more than three decades ago. I’ve often wondered if Stern ever realized how prophetic his words and, for that matter, the tongue-in-cheek warning on the iconic road sign at the festival— “Musicians at Play”—were. Because the spirit of play, and of collaboration—teaming up with other extraordinary musicians to “do something together”—is at the heart of Yo-Yo Ma’s approach to music. It transformed him from being “merely” a virtuoso cellist into arguably the most famous classical musician on the planet. Ma’s drive to “do something together” has taken him far beyond the bounds of garden-variety classical music. The Goat Rodeo Live (see Fasten Your Seatbelt: Goat Rodeo Live Takes Off, page 9) represents just the latest in a string of noteworthy musical collaborations and multi-genre explorations that have characterized his career. Goat Rodeo Live, I’m happy to report, is among a series of programs that Ma and friends have contributed to public broadcasting. During my years at NPR, Ma, fiddle whiz Mark O’Connor and legendary Nashville double-bassist Edgar Meyer (also featured in Goat Rodeo Live) interrupted their Appalachia Waltz tour to spend an afternoon jamming for our microphones, trading licks as fast as their insults—with grins never far from their faces. On another occasion, Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble took over NPR’s Studio 4A on a Friday night for what one of our sound engineers
called “the longest and best soundcheck ever”—a multihour rehearsal in preparation for some live sessions with Weekend Edition host Scott Simon and Performance Today’s Fred Child the next day. Even while taking a break in the cramped NPR green room, Ma and his friends still couldn’t resist the urge to play together: I’ll never forget watching the world’s greatest cellist huddled with such amazing musicians as Chinese erhu (a Chinese bowed string fiddle) player Xu Ke, Iranian ney (a Persian bamboo flute) player Siamak Jahangiri, and the other Silk Road musicians working out an impromptu version of the theme music to Performance Today. Watching one of Ma’s “supergroups” in action is like watching the NBA All-Stars warm up. It could be Chris Thile (another member of the Goat Rodeo quartet) dissecting the differences in mandolin technique between Mahler and Bill Monroe (he knows both!). Or clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera and brothers Sergio and Odair Assad running through a handful of Brazilian choros licks deciding which one they want to play. And through it all, the smile never leaves Yo-Yo Ma’s face. May some things never change!

Marking Milestones with Keith Lockhart by Laura Carlo Classical new england Program Host
Classical new england launches another broadcast season of the Boston Pops on saturday, may 19. Keith Lockhart will be on the podium to kick off the new season on the air with a Gershwin Spectacular, part of a truly spectacular season of Pops concerts called “visions of America.” Classical new england will be bringing you a Pops concert every saturday night (with a sunday encore) from now until the start of tanglewood’s 75th anniversary season in July, with ron della Chiesa back as host. it’s also a season to celebrate another milestone: the fifth anniversary of WGBH’s Keith’s Classical Corner, my daily chat with Keith that has become a fixture of our weekday mornings. Keith and i have known each other ever since i covered his first press conference when he was introduced as the new conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra 17 seasons ago. Behind the reserved, even shy, aspect that arts reporters saw of his personality that day, you could sense he was smart, self-assured, energetic and enthusiastic about his new city. that enthusiasm on the podium has not dimmed. regardless of how many times Keith has conducted a Holiday Pops or Fourth of July Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular program, he always has something fresh to say… and do!

that spirit is what prompted me to approach Keith five years ago with a bold (okay, nervy!) idea: find time in all of his conducting duties around the world to appear on a daily radio show in Boston, selecting a piece of music each day and then introducing it through his unique conductor’s perspective. to my delight Keith readily agreed…so long as his rehearsing, performing and touring schedule would allow. Knowing that his schedule is crazier than the Pope’s, i kept fingers crossed that the show would go a full year. And now we’re celebrating five years on the air together. Happy anniversary, my friend! The Boston Pops Saturdays, 7–10pm Sundays, 1–3pm Premiering May 19 Keith’s Classical Corner Weekdays, 8:30am on Classical Music with Laura Carlo

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Focusing In on Local Issues
In its new WGBH Focus reports, 89.7 WGBH news is going beyond the daily stories to provide in-depth reports on such topics as health care and the MBTA.
By Phil Redo, Managing Director 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio
One of the editorial goals we set for WGBH news, beyond our regular newscasts and talk programming, is to periodically devote additional airtime to explore in greater depth issues affecting the Commonwealth. These reports, which we are calling WGBH Focus, usually will air over a full week. You may have heard two of them already: in late March we explored health care, and in late April, the MBTA. Health care—and, more specifically, federal health care—has been center stage for years and is once again a central campaign issue in 2012. When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law two years ago, debates began immediately over whether the federal mandate was constitutional and what states’ rights were. Making things even more interesting for Bay State residents was how the Massachusetts health-care plan became the proxy for much of the conversation. Health care remains Massachusetts’ largest employment sector. When the US Supreme Court announced that it would hear the health-care case this past November, and granted an unprecedented amount of time for oral arguments, WGBH Radio dedicated its first WGBH Focus coverage to the topic. Similarly, the MBTA called for our attention. A critical public infrastructure like the MBTA demands deeper exploration than simply fitting the latest news developments into everything else we do. We undertook that challenge.

With WGBH Focus, you will hear local reporters’ enterprise reports, two-way interviews with our Morning Edition and All Things Considered hosts, longer conversations within our local talk block and, as always, supplemental information online. When relevant, the WGBH archives will provide us a means to place issues in better historical context. We won’t pretend we can take on every angle of such challenging, complex subjects. But we will strive to illuminate these issues. Our intention is to offer rich stories that provide a bit more clarity and a bit more focus— insight that we hope will lead to more informed consideration by all of us.

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Radio Reflections By Mindy Todd WCAI Managing Director for Editorial/Host
Observation is a necessary ingredient for a nature writer, and Robert “Bob” Finch is indeed a keen observer of the world around us. He shares his observations for WCAI in A Cape Cod Notebook, which airs on Morning Edition and All Things Considered. One of his essays from the series—Mailbox Spiders—won the 2006 New England Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Radio Writing. Bob has been writing about Cape Cod for more than 40 years. His essays remind us to stop and appreciate nature and to be more thoughtful of our surroundings. His words paint a vivid picture that listeners can see and relate

Bob Finch is the author of six collections of essays and co-editor of The Norton Book of Nature Writing. His first book, Common Ground: A Naturalist’s Cape Cod, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1982. Bob’s essays can be heard on WCAI every Tuesday at 8:30am and 5:45pm.

to, and his subjects often harken back to various aspects of the Cape’s past. Inspiration is never far away, as he frequently writes about his Wellfleet neighbors and their insights, bringing a real sense of community to his work. He unearths meaning below the surface of things. To Bob, a stone wall reflects the character of its builder. On a recent A Cape Cod Notebook, Bob talked about a wall a friend and former neighbor built to enclose a garden. “In my friend’s case [the wall] seemed an emblem of his resolve to shield his life and that of his family from the chaos and vagaries of disorder that he knew as a young boy.” Bob makes you ponder your own observations. When was the last time you really looked at those black ducks forming a raft on a pond? Or stopped to consider the work a small spider has mastered as it weaves a web in a mailbox? His essays have, no doubt, resulted in many lingering, driveway moments.

HOW A LOCAL BURRITO CHAIN CREATED
A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS.
In 1997, when Boloco opened its first restaurant in Boston and began serving globally inspired burritos and fresh shakes and smoothies, customers quickly understood there was something refreshingly different about the place. Bank of America has worked with Boloco for more than a decade, providing the financing to help open its first location and expand to 18 locations across New England. Boloco is another example of how we’re working to help small businesses grow and hire in Boston — and across the country. In 2011, we provided $199.6 million in new credit to small businesses in Massachusetts — an increase of 26% from 2010.
