Researching and producing a brand-new prime-time series for millions of viewers always is an exciting enterprise for WGBH. As the single largest producer of programming for PBS, on television and online, we think long and hard about what value a new series will bring to American audiences hungry for high-quality, informationrich entertainment. Enter Market Warriors, premiering this month (see page 12), from the same WGBH team behind Antiques Roadshow, PBS’s highest-rated series. Market Warriors is about competition and commerce in the world of antiques and collectibles. “The premise of the show is simple,” says WGBH’s Marsha Bemko, executive producer for Antiques Roadshow as well as the new PBS series. “Four ‘pickers’— or more politely, dealers—travel across the country to buy at flea markets and then sell at auction houses, where the hammer price dictates the fair market value. like Roadshow, Market Warriors allows you to learn from the pros. But here, the lessons emerge from the hand-to-hand combat of doing business in the real world. You’ll get a fascinating and honest picture of a complicated marketplace.” Actor and comedian Fred Willard (Best in Show, Modern Family) is the voice of Market Warriors, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. “As our off-screen host,” says Marsha, “Fred brings to the series both his strong improvisational skills and the eye and know-how of a collector—his particular passion is sports memorabilia. He’ll provide essential insights into a world few of us have experienced up close.” The conversation, and the learning, continues online at pbs.org/ marketwarriors, where you’ll find streamed episodes, Web-exclusive videos, and profiles of the series’ expert pickers. We’re also introducing a new Market Warriors blog, filled with the latest behind-the-scenes news from the series, articles about featured objects, and tips from the world of antiques and flea markets. Market Warriors airs immediately following Antiques Roadshow and has all the makings of another great Monday-night tradition, made possible by your generous annual support. i hope you’ll tune in and then let Marsha and me know (wgbh.org/contact) what you think of our latest pick.

First-Ever Boston Summer Arts Weekend To celebrate all that the arts have to offer, WGBH and The Boston Globe have teamed up to create the first-ever Summer Arts Weekend in Boston. Presented by Citizens Bank, this weekend event will celebrate the arts with a free festival on Copley Square in the Back Bay from July 27 to 29 with special offers around the city, and a series of ticketed, once-in-alifetime performances. Historic Copley Square will provide the backdrop for the three-day festival that will showcase Boston’s thriving arts community by bringing local and national artists to the city for a variety of free performances. Musical acts from across the spectrum of jazz, classical,
bluegrass, folk and Celtic music will perform free concerts throughout the festival including performances from Suzanne Vega, Sierra Hull and & Highway 111, the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas, Poncho Sanchez, and the Soul Rebels Brass Band. In addition, classical piano duo Anderson & Roe will perform, along with classically trained musicians Igudesman & Joo, who will combine classical music and comedy for what will be an unforgettable performance. Additional performers still are being added. (See page 25 to learn more about classical performers featured at the weekend.) Info: bostonsummerarts.com

Second Thoughts
nashi is an increasingly popular political youth organization in Russia with direct ties to the Kremlin. Officially, its goal is to support the current political system by creating a future elite among the brightest and most loyal Russian teenagers. But the organization also works to prevent the political opposition from spreading their views among young people. Teen Masha Drokova (left) moves to the very top of the organization, but begins to question her devotion when a popular anti-Putin reporter she has befriended is brutally beaten by “unknown perpetrators.” Putin’s Kiss Sun, 7/1 at 10pm on WGBH World
A Queenly Tribute
All eyes are on Queen Elizabeth ii, Britain’s second longest-reigning monarch, as England marks Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Join veteran newsman Sir Trevor McDonald (pictured, right) as he looks at the traditions and institutions surrounding the monarchy, from changing the guard at Buckingham Palace to the Queen’s royal visits, to some of the greatest historic royal palaces. Although the influence of the Crown may have lessened, these episodes show that throughout her 60-year reign Elizabeth has remained, in Conan Doyle’s phrase, “the one fixed point in a changing age.” Queen & Country on WGBH 2 London: Royal City Sun, 7/1 at 8pm Royal Visit Sun, 7/8 at 8pm The Queen’s Possessions Sun, 7/15 at 8pm Traveller Sun, 7/22 at 8pm

Thirty years after the discovery of the AiDS virus among gay white men, nearly half of the 1 million people in the US infected with Hiv are black men, women and children. “if black America was a country unto itself, it would have the 16th worst epidemic in the world,” says Phill Wilson, head of the Black AiDS institute. WGBH’s Frontline premieres a groundbreaking two-hour exploration of one of the country’s most urgent, preventable health crises. The film traces the history of the epidemic through the experiences of extraordinary individuals who tell their stories: people like Nel, a 63-year-old grandmother who married a deacon in her church and later found an Hiv diagnosis tucked into his Bible; and Jovanté, a high school football player who didn’t realize what Hiv meant until it was too late. The show also spotlights local Boston teens and rappers Tom (shown left) and Keith, who call themselves “Bornies,” survivors who were born with the virus in the early 1990s when many women were swept up in the twin epidemic of Hiv and crack. Their music reflects the experiences in their young lives— acceptance by others, finding love and the loss of their mothers. From Magic Johnson to civil rights pioneer Julian Bond, from pastors to health workers, people on the front lines tell moving stories of the battle to contain the spread of the virus, and the opportunity to finally turn the tide of the epidemic. Written, produced and directed by Renata Simone, the producer of the 2006 Frontline series The Age of AIDS. Frontline/Endgame: AIDS in Black America Tue, 7/10 at 9pm on WGBH 2

The Hunt Is On!
How do professional treasure hunters find all those hidden gems? Decide what they’re worth? Score the best deal? The new WGBHproduced Market Warriors pulls back the curtain to reveal the little-known world of antiques dealing. This new series from the producers of Antiques Roadshow follows four antiques pickers—Bob, John, Kevin and Miller— on a nationwide treasure hunt, scouring flea markets for vintage valuables and selling their finds at auction with an eye toward maximizing profit. And keep an ear out for Fred Willard (Best in Show, Modern Family). As Market Warriors’ off-screen host—and an antiques collector in his own right—he’ll offer his signature wry commentary to the mix. Market Warriors Mon, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Here’s a rundown of the show’s pros. Needham: Little Town, Big Stories
Before there was a United States, there was needham. The people who first settled this Massachusetts town arrived in America in 1630, just 10 years after the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth. They first made their way to Dedham, and by 1711 they had officially established their own town: needham. Over three centuries, the town transformed from a sleepy farming community to a thriving mill center and an industrial showcase, to a highly desirable suburb of Boston. Created as the finale to needham’s 300th-anniversary celebration in 2011, this film tells this little town’s really big stories. narrated by former needham resident and broadcaster natalie Jacobson. Spotlight on Immigration This two-part series probes one of the nation’s most polarizing issues and a key topic in the 2012 election: immigration. The first episode, Jobs, looks at the spectrum of immigrant jobs and the complex maze of rules, regulations, caps and quotas challenging the country at many levels. Enforcement cuts through the heated rhetoric to explore how communities and the nation are struggling to enforce inconsistent immigration policies. narrated by Ray Suarez, senior PBS NewsHour correspondent. History’s Gumshoes Are Back!
America’s top gumshoes are back! no stone is left unturned as History Detectives experts (pictured from left) Tukufu Zuberi, Gwendolyn Wright, Eduardo Pagan, Elyse Luray and Wes Cowan travel the country to explore the stories behind local folklore, prominent figures and family legends. The premiere digs into whether authentic discoveries have been made for rock music’s Holy Grail, the long-lost electric Fender Stratocaster Bob Dylan plugged in at the ’65 newport Folk Festival; autographs allegedly signed for two brothers in Miami Beach during the Beatles’ legendary 1964 US “British invasion” tour; and a $5 thrift store find that may have unearthed a little-known artistic side of musical iconoclast Frank Zappa. Radio Spotlight WCAI’s Colella Lands Dream Job Stephen Colella isn’t a native of Cape Cod, but it’s hard to imagine anyone more at home there. A job in commercial radio brought him to the Cape nearly 30 years ago, and since then Colella has used his diverse talents to make his mark on the region, appearing in more than 20 local theater productions and launching his own personal chef business. Last fall, the former director of sales at Cape Cod Broadcasting took over as managing director of development for WCAI—a service of WGBH—where his primary focus is generating support from members and corporate underwriters. WGBH’s Matt Roy recently spoke with him about the station and life on the Cape.
Q A
How did you get your start in radio?
Radio has been part of my daily life since I was a boy. And to this day, I assimilate most news and entertainment through my ears. My homes have always had more radios than rooms. As a freshman in college, I couldn’t wait to get my first glimpse of the [Williams College] radio station. It wasn’t long before I had a weekly morning show and was producing comedy segments as well as music specials on artists such as Linda Ronstadt and Elvis Costello. I love music and it’s what led to my immersion in radio. It’s my love for radio that has directed the passion in my career.
Q A
What attracted you to the job at WCAI?
Though I’ve spent most of my career in commercial radio, I’ve always been a clandestine listener to public radio. Before arriving at WCAI, I worked as a personal chef for two years trying to master and share the recipes my mother brought from Bologna, Italy, when she moved to the States as a young woman. During that time, WCAI became my constant companion as I simmered sauces and rolled fresh pasta. I fell in love with WCAI, and when I had the opportunity to join the team, I felt a dream being realized.
Q A
What can vacationers expect to hear this summer on WCAI? They’ll hear the familiar national voices of NPR and other outlets, but also a lot of local content. Mindy Todd hosts The Point, a local call-in show, every weekday at 9:30am. Thanks to a partnership with the Cape Cod Times, their reporters appear every day on our air, and we offer weekly reports from other local papers. We feature a local food report, Vern Laux’s Bird News, nature writer Bob Finch’s A Cape Cod Notebook and Shelley Christiansen’s essays from the Vineyard. In the summer, we add a fishing report. We have some tremendous reporters, Sean Corcoran, in particular. His series Facing Alzheimer’s: The Caregivers’ Challenge recently received an Edward R. Murrow News Award.
Q A
How is the renovation of WCAI’s head- quarters—the historic 1842 Davis House in Woods Hole—coming along? It’s entering its final phase. We’re putting a historically accurate deck on the street side of the building. When finished, our facility will be fully accessible, and we can’t wait to welcome listeners and volunteers. It’ll be a big improvement, aesthetically. Those who know the village well have felt that there are three gems at the gateway to Woods Hole: the Woods Hole Historical Museum, the Woods Hole Public Library and our building, which had always been an eyesore— something that wasn’t emblematic of what people wanted to see as they came into Woods Hole. We’re the third jewel in the crown, and we’re now regaining some of the luster that didn’t exist for many, many years.
Q A
How long have you been on the Cape and what do you love about it? I’ve lived on Cape Cod since 1983. I’m extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to live here as a young adult. Many of my college cohorts began their careers in New York City and still live there. I’ve always had a notion of someday retiring to NYC, whereas they dream of retiring to the Cape. I’ve often envisioned us waving to each other as we pass on the highway on the way to our respective destinies. My favorite aspect of the Cape is the unique and diverse character of each town and village. Whether by bike, kayak or on foot, there are a
“I want to explore every inch of this 72-mile sandbar in my lifetime.” seemingly infinite number of adventures to pursue. I want to explore every inch of this 72-mile sandbar in my lifetime.
Q A
Do you have a favorite summer dish that you prepare? Although I may not look it, I’m a shellfisher man. I love to go down to Cotuit and dig up clams. It’s very therapeutic. You’re about waistdeep in water and the sun is on your back and you’re methodically raking. I’m not real good at it, but I enjoy it. It probably takes me about two hours to get a bucket full of clams. My favorite dish to prepare is linguine alla vongole, which is linguine with a white clam sauce.
Q A
Are you going to be in any productions this summer? Nothing that I can guarantee, but I do have my eyes set on auditions. Over the years, I’ve been in productions from Woods Hole to Brewster and I hope to remain active. The Cape has opportunities in almost every town, and we’re fortunate because this market attracts some true artists in every sense: there are some tremendous performers, directors and designers. The caliber of theater we get to see down here is amazing. Just one more reason to visit! WCAI can be heard on 90.1, 91.1 and 94.3, or online at wgbh.org/wcai Schedules, program info, playlists: capeandislands.org 23
Classical New England Tanglewood at 75
Around the Globe, on the Radio and in Your Pocket! By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services
When conductor Christoph von Dohnányi gives the downbeat to open the 75th-anniversary season of Tanglewood on July 6, the sounds of the Boston Symphony Orchestra will reverberate far beyond the Koussevitzky Music Shed to more places—and in more ways—than ever before. Thanks to our longstanding partnerships with the BSO and the European Broadcasting Union, the July 6 Opening Night at Tanglewood concert and the July 14 Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Gala Concert will be heard not only on our expanded network of stations around New England and upstate New York, but also on public radio stations around the nation and the world, including Serge Koussevitzky’s native Russia. Opening night will feature a re-creation of the very first concert on the Tanglewood grounds in 1937; the 75th-anniversary concert will showcase conductors Keith Lockhart, John Williams and Andris Nelsons with guests artists that include cellist Yo-Yo Ma, singer James Taylor and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. And while we’re delighted to be bringing the splendor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in its summer home to the international airwaves for the first time, you no longer even need a radio to listen! The new-andimproved WGBH iPhone App (also available for the iPad) has a special section devoted both to Boston Symphony Orchestra concert broadcasts as well as to BSO features, interviews and commentary. What’s more, if you miss any of our live broadcasts (Friday and Saturday nights starting at 7pm; Sunday afternoons starting at 1pm), you can always catch them at your convenience online: both the BSO’s Symphony Hall and Tanglewood performances are now available free for up to one year on-demand—both on our iPhone app and on our BSO Radio pages at classicalnewengland.org.
In addition to our expanded online presence, we’re also adding a couple of new elements to our Tanglewood programming over the air as well. On Thursday night, July 5, we’re proud to present for the first time on the Boston airwaves a remarkable piece of Tanglewood history: the July 1994 Gala Opening Concert of Seiji Ozawa Hall featuring the former BSO music director in peak form, leading a poignant concert that includes the world premiere of John Williams’ Cello Concerto, with soloist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Peter Serkin performing Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. It’s the first of many special 75thanniversary features and specials we’ll be bringing you throughout the summer on Classical New England. And starting on July 6, BSO broadcast host Ron Della Chiesa will join Classical New England host Cathy Fuller for Tanglewood Turnpike. While Drive Time Live takes the summer off, Ron and Cathy will get together every Friday afternoon at 3pm to preview the weekend ahead and reprise some of the great moments of the weekend just passed. And, for the first time ever, you’ll be able to hear those great Music Shed concerts a second time: Ron and Cathy will select one of the previous weekend’s highlight performances to play back every Friday afternoon.

Boston’s Summer Arts Weekend: A Classical Gas Mark your calendar for July 29—the day that some of the most dynamic, charismatic, and yes, funny classical artists take the stage at the first-ever Summer Arts Weekend. From a Baroque in Boston brunch with WGBH’s laura Carlo at the Fairmont Copley Plaza to the blazing trumpet of Alison Balsom in the sunset, the day will be a pure classical gas, featuring artists willing to explore new frontiers of classical music, including the exhilarating two-piano duo of Anderson & Roe, as well as the Klezmer Conservatory Band directed by frequent itzhak Perlman collaborator and new England Conservatory teacher Hankus netsky. And some performers will even crack a few jokes. Fresh from their Carnegie Hall debut, the acclaimed duo igudesmann and Joo are now
out to conquer Copley Square with “A little nightmare Music,” proving once and for all that classical music really can be funny! Sunday’s events are part of a three-day free festival in Copley Square, presented by Citizens Bank and brought to you by WGBH and The Boston Globe. Check out the entire schedule at bostonsummerarts. com and plan on being there in the Square! (learn more about other event offerings on pages 2, 11 and the inside front cover.)
Beyond Tanglewood: New England’s Summer Festivals By Cheryl Willoughby Classical new England Music Director
Sure as fireworks blossoming over the Esplanade every July 4, there is one thing we know to be a fact of new England life in the summertime: live music, in out-of-the-way places, in venues as diverse as the landscape itself. The remarkable range and diversity of summer music festivals is part of the distinctive character of our region. From intimate barns and churches to specially designed bandshells and stages, there is truly something to appeal to every taste and travel budget. At Classical new England, we’ve marked a few milestones on the summer festival season. The Central vermont Chamber Music Festival’s 20th season kicks off on August 18 with a program that showcases Benjamin Britten’s showpiece for oboe, the Phantasy Quartet. Further south, the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield celebrates its 30th anniversary with a trip to Scotland…and then comes back to the Berkshires with performances
of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Also along Route 7 is Great Barrington’s Aston Magna Music Festival, rounding the corner on a 40th-anniversary season with a full slate of works by Bach, Mozart and delights from the italian Baroque era. Are you spinning yet? We’re just getting started! not only are we tracking all of these festival activities, we’re also preserving some of these great summer moments to share with you via our new program, New England Summer Festivals. Every Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at noon you’ll hear some of the great music being made at these festivals, as well the story behind each gathering’s unique profile. like some of the best music, summer in new England is short, intense, and sweet. Why not create some musical memories of your own this season…perhaps in person, and every week on the air.

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio Radio on Your Phone—Smart! By Phil Redo, Managing Director 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio
Smartphones are dominating the mobile media market. And mobile media is impacting radio—mostly, for the good! Back in January, Jacobs Media, a research company based in Detroit, conducted its eighth annual survey about how media technology is being used and accepted, specifically among radio listeners. More than 57,000 listeners from all over the US (including Boston) and Canada participated. The survey addressed every radio format on both commercial and public stations. The impressive news for radio is that the medium continues to reach more than 90 percent of all Americans the highly reliable, old-fashioned way—from a transmitter to a traditional radio. But more and more people also are tuning in on phones, tablets and PCs. Arguably, the most significant personal technology change in recent years has been the evolution of the cell phone. Of the listeners surveyed, 96 percent reported using a cell phone, with more than half being a “smart” model with a more advanced mobile computing platform than a standard cell phone. i’m sure you’ve seen how iPhones and Androids allow access to the internet. From everywhere and anywhere, people are checking email and news, playing games, watching and shooting videos and listening to all types of audio, including lots of radio.

These more sophisticated smartphones are making radio portable in ways never before possible. listeners are able to have radio in their pocket at all times, on a single device they increasingly consider indispensable. And while the smartphone is in some ways a new competitor for radio— since nearly every audio choice is accessible—the most recent Jacobs study reports radio has become a popular choice for smartphone owners. Almost everyone who owns a smartphone downloads a mobile software application, or app. Some are for news, some for games or even to count calories. But among radio listeners, 70 percent download at least one app specifically to make it easier to listen to a radio station. WGBH has evidence to support these findings. Since 2010, 89.7 WGBH has seen its streaming listenership increase by more than 30 percent each year. And at the same time, listenership in general also has increased. More listeners overall with many listening on their phone—smart!

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Connecting the Cape to Science By Mindy Todd WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial/Host
WCAI launched a new program last month that highlights Cape Cod’s unique scientific community. Each Monday, Living Lab on The Point offers a window into the science being done in our backyard and discusses its far-reaching impacts and implications. Host Heather Goldstone holds a PhD in ocean science and worked in Woods Hole laboratories for nearly 10 years before switching tracks to become WCAI’s science editor. For the past year and a half, she hosted WCAI’s Climatide blog, which explored the tangible ways in which warmer temperatures are altering the ocean, and thus life on Cape Cod. “That experience made me realize that there’s a deep misunderstanding of science that goes beyond the facts of climate change or evolution,”

Goldstone says. “A survey done a couple of years ago found that four out of five Americans can’t name a living scientist. It’s probably not that bad around here, but there are still plenty of Cape residents for whom science is mysterious, and even intimidating.” Research institutions are prominent members of close-knit and highly creative communities around the Cape and Islands, from Provincetown to Nantucket and, of course, Woods Hole, where WCAI is located. Interactions between scientists and neighbors can result in unorthodox collaborations between scientists, artists, fishermen and others. Living Lab on The Point looks at these connections and focuses on the personal and human stories behind scientific studies. A companion website—LivingLabRadio.org—provides a venue for scientists and non-scientists to engage in conversation about how science affects our lives and how the practice of science is changing. “The Cape is a hotbed of what’s becoming a growing trend in science everywhere—scientists looking outside the scientific community for inspiration, information and assistance,” Goldstone says.
