there is so much news to share about the sounds of summer coming your way —in our studios, out at tanglewood and at festivals across the region, and in Boston as the city prepares to launch our first-ever summer Arts Weekend. And WGBH is in the middle of it all: as a catalyst and producer, as a culturedriven public broadcasting and online service, and as a vibrant local stage. “this month, we’re poised to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the tanglewood music Festival—the remarkable marriage of music and nature that has become as synonymous with a new england summer as the bleachers in Fenway Park or the beaches of Cape Cod,” says Ben Roe, managing director for Classical new england. “We’re asking everyone who’s ever been there—onstage, backstage, in the audience or behind the scenes—to send us their favorite ‘tanglewood tales.’” Check out what people are sharing (stories, photos, audio, video) and then submit your own memories to classicalnewengland.org/ tanglewood. Our “tanglewood tales” collection will set the stage for Classical new england’s coverage of the entire tanglewood season. Look for live broadcasts every Friday, saturday and sunday—starting with tanglewood’s season opener on Friday evening, July 6, a re-creation of the first-ever tanglewood concert from 1937. that performance—along with the gala 75th-Anniversary Concert on saturday, July 14, featuring some of tanglewood’s greatest names (John Williams, Yo-Yo ma, Keith Lockhart among them)—will be heard not only here in new england, but around the world. Closer to home, Classical new england is celebrating another classical music milestone: the 150th anniversary of the birth of French composer Claude debussy. i hope you can you can join us at our studios here in Brighton on saturday, June 23, for an all-debussy program of live performances (page 24) featuring pianist marc-André Hamelin, clarinetist richard stoltzman and saxophonist Ken radnofsky. And it’s not too early to mark your calendar for Boston’s summer Arts Weekend, co-presented by The Boston Globe and WGBH, with lead sponsorship by Citizens Bank. Globe publisher Chris mayer and i first talked about launching a Boston arts celebration some time ago, and we’re thrilled to see it take shape. the fun begins Friday, July 27, and runs through sunday, July 29, in Copley square, with multiple stages and venues showcasing outstanding local music, dance and theater performances, and visual arts, plus headliners you won’t want to miss. Radio Spotlight Fred Child Talks Tanglewood Fred Child has a full plate. He’s host of American Public Media’s Performance Today, the country’s most popular classical music radio program, with more than 1.3 million weekly listeners on more than 260 stations, including Classical New England, where it airs weeknights at 7pm. Child also is a commentator and announcer for PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center, and a sought-after host for classical music events around the country. This summer, Fred will be sharing Classical New England’s celebration of Tanglewood Music Festival’s 75th anniversary with the nation. Child recently talked Tanglewood —and his multi-faceted career—with WGBH’s Matt Roy.

Why is Tanglewood so special?

For the Boston Symphony Orchestra to have a summer retreat—a summer musical playground—is just extraordinary. The fact that Tanglewood attracts the top artists in the world to perform and relax in an amazing setting would be enough by itself. But then you factor in the program for remarkable young musicians and you have a complete musical experience. There’s this wonderful, welcoming informality. Everybody is in a great mood. If it’s a hot day, you can come dressed as you are—T-shirt, shorts, and sandals— and lie back, look up at the stars, and hear one of the best orchestras in the world. There’s nothing else quite like it.

What are your fondest Tanglewood memories? One of my favorite live broadcasts was from the summer of 2008. After more than 50 years, the Beaux Arts Trio, one of the great chamber music ensembles in the world, played their last-ever American concert at Tanglewood— the very same spot where they had played their first concert. The three members came up to the broadcast booth during intermission for an on-air conversation. They went on to play three encores and slowed down at the end of the last one— dragging it out as if they didn’t want it to end. Nobody wanted it to end. I met the legendary cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich at Tanglewood. He was a force of

nature—one of those people who, when he walked into a room, the temperature changed and gravity seemed to shift everything toward him. He was so charismatic: such an amazing musician, but an extraordinary human being as well. It was a special treat to interview him and hear him play the Dvořák cello concerto for the last time at Tanglewood.

Can listening on radio do Tanglewood justice? Live radio creates this sense of excitement and expectation that’s different than listening to a CD. Ron Della Chiesa does such a great job of setting the Tanglewood scene. He captures the festival’s venerable past and the electricity of its present in his delivery. Then there’s the ambiance and anticipation of the crowd. You hear the orchestra tuning up and 10,000 people applauding as Yo-Yo Ma walks out on stage.

Which performances are you looking forward to? Opening Night, July 6, is going to be really special with Christopher von Dohnányi conducting an all-Beethoven program. The following night, violinist Joshua Bell will be there with the BSO and Edgar Meyer playing the world premiere of a piece written by Meyer—the greatest double bass player in the world. I’m a huge fan of Edgar. The 75th Anniversary Gala on July 14 features a range of music with lots of stars on the same stage: John Williams, Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor.

Perhaps you’ve noticed some of the recent billboards and on-air spots for Classical new england that highlight “the Colors of Classical music.” it’s our way of showcasing the infinite variety, depth and, yes, color of the world of classical music, and how it appeals as much to the heart as to the head. Perhaps no other composer is as closely associated with color—and light—as Claude debussy, the French “painter of sounds” born 150 years ago this summer. debussy once said, “I am more and more convinced that music is not, in essence, a thing which can be cast into a more traditional and fixed form. It is made up of colors and rhythms.” We’re celebrating debussy with a special evening event, “the Colors of Claude debussy,” on saturday, June 23, here in our WGBH studios. Pianist marc-André Hamelin, clarinetist richard stoltzman, saxophonist Ken radnofsky and other musical guests will be in our Fraser Performance studio to play some of debussy’s most colorful works, including his final Rapsodie, commissioned by Boston arts patron mrs. elise Hall. Our special debussy evening also includes an exploration of the composer’s influence on the impressionist school of French film with noted ragtime and silent film pianist ethan Uslan, and a talk by new england Conservatory president tony Woodcock, titled “Après l’Après-

Midi,” investigating how the world of music was permanently changed after the premiere of debussy’s sensuous Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Tanglewood Tales: Hawthorne’s, Ours and Yours By Benjamin K. roe managing director, Classical services

A few summer weeks among mountains, a lifetime among green meadows and placid slopes, with outlines forever new, because continually fading out of the memory—such would be my sober choice. —nathaniel Hawthorne, Tanglewood Tales novelist nathaniel Hawthorne’s vision of an ideal life lived, as penned in Tanglewood Tales, was time split between summers spent in the splendor of the Berkshires and his home situated among the “gentle eminences” of Concord. this summer we’ll set up camp in Hawthorne’s former stomping grounds as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the tanglewood music Festival. the name “tanglewood”—and the Berkshire idyll it suggests—can be traced all the way back to the spring of 1850, when Hawthorne, fresh off the success of The Scarlet Letter, rented a small farmhouse in the area. While there he wrote both The House of Seven Gables and, significantly, Tanglewood Tales, a children’s book consisting of Hawthorne’s skillful reworking of ancient Greek myths. Hawthorne had rented the cottage from William Aspinwall tappan, who paid tribute to the famous American man of letters by renaming both the cottage—and, later, his family’s summer estate—“tanglewood.” Fast forward to 1936, when his daughter mary Aspinwall tappan donated the estate to the Boston symphony Orchestra, and in the process spawned a new, musical, era of tanglewood tales. tanglewood: the remarkable marriage of music and nature that has become as synonymous with a new england summer as the bleachers in

Producer Val Wang joined the WGBH newsroom earlier this spring and began work on a rather unusual but quite intriguing project: She is exploring the role Chinese takeout restaurants play as vital crossroads between cultures in neighborhoods in Boston and beyond. Val’s Planet Takeout aims to break down barriers between the Chinese immigrants running these hyper-local establishments and the diverse customers they serve. It’s certainly a unique approach to how we live our lives in a city that is rapidly changing, and it’s most surely creative sociology. We expect you’ll be hearing reports from Planet Takeout on the radio, experiencing them on the Web and possibly viewing them on WGBH TV as well. Val is a seasoned journalist and producer who will be with us through November as part of a Corporation for Public Broadcasting–funded grant that highlights local coverage and encourages innovative approaches to reporting that a daily, working newsroom is simply unable to take on. Her Planet Takeout is part of a larger effort called “Localore,” an initiative of The Association of Independents in Radio. As the name implies, the mission is to produce content at the local level. Many public radio and television stations competed for the opportunity to have a producer choose to work in their facilities—and we were very excited that Val opted to partner with WGBH. It has been fascinating to work with Val as she builds her project, discovering and tackling the unanticipated challenges of pursuing what may be

Vocalist Tierney Sutton lived in Boston in the early 1990s while attending Berklee College of Music. She and her band (seen here from left with Sutton: drummer Ray Brinker, bassist Trey Henry, bassist Kevin Axt and pianist Christian Jacob) have since traveled the world, earned a Grammy nomination and made a dozen recordings. WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station À la Carte Radio

By Mindy Todd WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial/Host Every Sunday night on WCAI, Arts & Ideas offers four hours of diverse programming that you are not likely to hear anywhere else. In any given week, listeners might get interviews from Bill Moyers, a documentary on nuclear power, a portrait of Jimi Hendrix and an hour of short pieces on subjects ranging from sea squirts to bullying. The concept behind Arts & Ideas is somewhat radical because the assumption in radio is that regular, predictable programming builds audience. In the beginning, host Jay Allison went to his bookshelf to program the show. “We chose from a lifetime’s accumulation of cassettes that my producer friends from around the world had sent me,” he says. “The show was a real smorgasbord, and still is.” Allison, the founder of WCAI, co-produces Arts & Ideas with Viki Merrick. Eventually, they had to look beyond Allison’s bookshelf. His non-proﬁt organization Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole (WCAI’s production partner) was experimenting with the Internet as an open

door to public broadcasting with its do-it-yourself site, Transom.org. “I had the idea of creating an Internet distribution system, which would allow independent producers to post their work in a library and encourage stations around the country to carry it. It eventually became the Public Radio Exchange, PRX.org,” Allison says. PRX.org is now a significant public radio distributor in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and winner of a MacArthur “genius organization” award. Today, Arts & Ideas has a huge à la carte menu of programming on PRX from which to choose, and it’s never a problem to find material to fill the four hours. Merrick combs PRX and other sources to find great stuff. “I try to think about everyone who’s listening: the listeners who call in or email or stop me on the street,” she says. While Sunday evening is thought by a lot of programmers to be a “radio graveyard,” Allison disagrees. “We feel our audience is one that really cares and tunes in on purpose. Dinner is over, the weekend is done, the day is fading, and it’s a fine time to really LISTEN.”
